Some Bits on the Matt Nagy Hiring You Won’t Find Anywhere Else

| January 9th, 2018

People tweeted me, texted me, asked me forty times today, “What do you think of the Nagy hire?” While it’s hard to believe, I really don’t care. I’m excited about new coach and new approach but you never know which of these coordinators is going to become a great head coach. I hope he wins a lot of games.

Since there’s so much information available on Nagy, I’ll spare you the same rehashed opinions and links. Instead here’s some information you won’t see elsewhere about the process.

  • John DeFilippo’s interview was underwhelming. And that’s being kind. The Bears found him to be green and, beyond that, doubted his ability to build a competitive staff. When Peter Schrager reported that Flip was willing to keep Fangio, some believe it was a response to Flip knowing he’d done poorly when pushed on those questions.
  • Josh McDaniels’ interview was the opposite. If Nagy was the target all along, McD gave the organization pause. He was incredibly prepared for their short session. There’s some debate over whether McD wanted to come to Chicago but there is no debate that Bears would have pursued vigorously if Nagy passed. (Side note: Nagy wasn’t passing.)
  • Adam Jahns is not just someone I respect but a friend. And an hour before his story went public, I knew he had it. Being able to experience that hour with him was flat-out thrilling. And seeing him beat Schefter and RapSheet by all of a few minutes is proof 2018 has potential.
  • When I went to sleep Sunday night, around midnight ET, Ted Phillips and George McCaskey were not certain who Ryan Pace was hiring as the next head coach. Pace was given autonomy. A source close to ownership told me Sunday early evening that it would “not be surprising if there were a second round of interviews”. It would have been quite surprising to Pace.

That’s it. That’s all I got. The press conference is Tuesday at 1 pm CT. I’ll be back with a wrap-up of that after it concludes.

So basically these are all the leftovers from Adam Jahns.

  • Ryan Pace took the first QB in the draft last year. He hired the first HC of all his candidates this year.

I don’t know if this Pace-Nagy-Trubisky trio is going to sink or swim, but at least Pace is getting the chance to do it with guys we 100% know are the ones we wanted.

    • Irish Sweetness

Wasn’t Watson supposed to be the first though?

      • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

sure, he was supposed to be the first, that is why he was the 3rd QB picked.

      • I don’t care about others. I’m saying these are both guys where Pace had his pick of everybody available and chose them.

So now whatever happens-good or bad-is 100% on Pace. And that’s just the way it should be. Give a man the chance to sink or swim with his guys.

      • willbest

Watson was the most polished and the most experienced in big game situations. But he wasn’t going first. The Chiefs saw to that. 7 QB needy teams passed on Watson. They were probably all afraid of RG Knee.

  • Tortured Bear fan

so it’s like a “wait and see” mode..

  • BerwynBomber

The Jahns stroking has gotten silly. One or two mentions is more than enough.

We get it. He got the scoop of the year. Leave it.

    • CanadaBear

I’m actually happy for Jahns and by association, Jeff. They both seem like decent guys. Pretty sure everyone on the blog knows about it by now so mission accomplished for Jeff.

    • DaBearsBlog

Or…even better…I’ll keep doing exactly what I want.

  • Surprised Flip crashed and burned in interview. Then again, Arians didn’t “impress” as much as synergy symposium Trestman.

That’s the only thing I worried about Flip – if he had the connections to build a strong staff.

I mean, how does a QB coach convince top notch DCs, etc to join?

Guess he needs to take some tips on networking from Fisher.

    – Bears culture

So, McDs impressed the Bears, but the Bears did not impress him, eh?
And if Fangio leaves, as Alshon left, what does that say about the “culture” Pace has built?

Florio suggested that the Bears moved in on Nagy, fresh off a loss, so fast because they’re a 2nd rate organization which top candidates would shun, so they didn’t want to take a chance on Flip or McDaniels later only to lose out and be stuck with leftovers.

It’s like a beta proposing to a girl who just got dumped.

    Something to ponder.

    – All that being said, meh.

Guess we’ll find out soon enough if Pace’s gambits work or not.

    • ButtonShoes

The thing that probably sold Nagy more than anything else is this stated “love” of Trubisky that he’s got. I would bet that is what put Nagy over McD for Pace.

    • BerwynBomber

I’d rather have Nagy than Flip. The whole Wentz factor of Flip’s resume came with a huge asterisk, IMO. Wentz just looks too Peyton/Rodgers-like in regard to his LoS command. I sense that is more QB than coach. Not to mention Wentz’s pure, freakish athleticism (for a dude his size).

Plus, Nagy had called plays and been an OC. Flip had done/been neither.

All that said, Nagy could bomb. But I would have taken him over Flip. At least at this time.

      • My concern isn’t so much about who’ll excel and who won’t. No one really knows that.

Flip could bomb. Naggy could succeed.

I’m more worried about the trend of the Bears not being able to attract top talent, whether that’s coaches (McD), coordinators (why isn’t Fangio all-in already?) or players (not just Alshon, but FAs like Bouye).

If Pace has built such a winning culture, why does the NFL seem to treat Chicago like, well, like the 2nd city?

        • ButtonShoes

Probably because they know who owns the team and how they run it? That would be my guess.

        • BerwynBomber

          I don’t buy that completely.

Fangio is probably a little pissed. It would be quite a coup if the Bears can retain him.

In terms of Bouye, did he turn us down?

          • ButtonShoes

He did. I think because Pace gave him a low offer. I’m not 100% sure about that though.

          • Josh Norman said Pace made a cheap ass offer on him that was insulting.

Bouye and Gilmore straight said they wanted to be on winners.

And I’m sure they weren’t the only FAs

And why did Alshon bolt? Why did he want to get out so badly? What happens if Fuller and Fangio leave too?

Why are there reports McD didn’t want to be a Bear?

These are the concerning questions at the core of the 30 yr SB drought.

          • ButtonShoes

I’d trace it to ownership. It’s the only constant factor over the past 3 decades that you can point to.

          • Yeah, there’s something going on in the underbelly.

A stench the common fan doesn’t sniff, but apparently everyone else in the NFL does.

          • ButtonShoes

It’s the same stench that hangs around the Chicago Bulls. A team that is also screwed over due to its ownership.

          • Irish Sweetness

Martha Ford. Ginny. The old girls are a hard sell.

On the flip side, Georgia Frontiere made 14 playoffs and the SB three times, winning it once. Not bad.

          • CanadaBear

Esp considering she was dumber than a stump.

    • Elect A Clown. Expect A Circus

      Florio is full of shit.

Hiring Nagy was all about Trub. Pace wanted to hire a head coach who was as much in love with Trub as he was. Nagy was favorite ever since Kaplan dropped this huge clue:

      David Kaplan@thekapman

Here is a great piece of intel: Source close to Matt Nagy tells @ESPN1000 that Nagy loved Trubisky in 2017 NFL Draft and the Chiefs loved him. Nagy has stayed close to him during this season. Nagy believes you can win big with Trubisky.

      9:55 AM – Jan 4, 2018
      —-
Pace knew of the Chiefs interest in Trubisky because he probably fielded their calls to move up. Titans had a deal with a team for #4 pick but the deal never materialized once Trub was off the board.

Head coaching candidates are very good lying about incumbent QB’s of the team they are trying to coach. But you never know of their real motives and they don’t have anything invested in incumbent QB. Pace rightly figured that his future (and by extension Trub’s future) is dependent on the new head coach fully, 100% committed to Trub. With Nagy, there was no doubt on this point. He did not even need to ask Nagy about Trub. He had confirmation of Nagy’s interest in Trub before he ever considered him for head coach. It is a cherry on top that the kind of offense Nagy runs fits Trub perfectly.

Nagy hire was all about Pace trying to protect and maximize his investment in Trub.

    • Dis Guy Trublinsky (Johnnywad)

You’re going to spin everything into a negative and flip it somehow to Bears ownership it appears.

If McDaniels supposedly didn’t “want” the Bears, why did he not only accept the interview, but come so prepared?

If Alshon was such a top shelf free agent, why did he end up on a one year deal? He ended up with barely outpacing Kendall Wright.

I’m about the only one here that openly said I thought it would be McDaniels. Most everybody thought it was a bad idea. Of the supposed “coaching class”, Nagy is among the most qualified. So why is this such an opportunity to bitch?

      • BerwynBomber

Flip love, I’m guessing. The dream dies hard.

      • Look at the evidence.

Alshon wanted out no matter what. WHy?

Josh Norman straight said Pace made a cheap offer. Whether he was worth it or not, doesn’t matter. It’s a behind the scene clue on how Pace operates in FA and why we get stuck with Coopers and Wheaton instead Alshon of Bouye

Why has Fangio not resigned already? Why is he pondering returning to SF, a team that completely dumped him, and supposedly is not that much better off than us?

Unless of course, Fangio believes more in Jimmy G, Kyle and Lynch than he does in Pace, Nagy and Trub (or worse, believes in the Puke more than us).

Why is it rumored McDaniels didn’t want to be on the Bears? Hey, I’m not the one reporting this, just look above “There’s some debate over whether McD wanted to come to Chicago”. Isn’t Chicago supposed to be a GREAT lure for the top candidates?

Would it surprise anyone if not only Fuller leaves, but Prince as well – just like Alshon?

Birdcage, not exactly a hot commodity, bolted ASAP.

There’s been a lot of smoke of both players and coaches wanting out of Chicago, and where there’s smoke, there’s usually fire.

So to me, there’s some sort of stench on the Bears that is repelling talent.

Could it simply be the stink of losing? Maybe.
        Could it be Pace? maybe
Could it be sweaty Teddy and the McCaskeys?
        Maybe.

I don’t really know, but that’s a lot of smoke.

A new HC with a young franchise SHOULD attract and reinvigorate a franchise, but even that is making Fangio treat the Bears like that fall back girl we all call when we break up with our first choice.

        • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

Fangio: 1st he was interviewing for the HC position. 2nd new coach was hired. 3rd if you are a guy that is wanted by multiple teams why not hear them out. He is in the driver seat. If I was in Fangio’s position, I would be doing the exact same thing.

McDaniels: interviewed with Giants before the Bears. Maybe he prefers them. Maybe the Giants came back and said we want you. The only person that the Giants have slotted to interview this week is Wilks, who would satisfy the Rooney rule for them, so they could have already made their decision but could not announce it until the Rooney Rule interview. Maybe the Giants were McD’s first choice, can’t fault him for that. Like wad said, if he did not want the job why prepare so much. Also I am pretty sure the reports that McD did not want to be on the Bears came out after Nagy was hired.

Birdcage: went running back to Gase, it was clear he was not going to stick around here so he found a job.

As far as Norman and other CBs: why tie up that much money on a CB that was basically a one year wonder? They don’t always pan out. Norman had 0 INTs this year, Gilmore hasn’t been good with NE based on his contract, Bouye seems to be working out.

AJ: we can debate all you want on this and we have. He did not want to be here, and it was apparent long before his final year. He never joined workouts QBs put on, he missed ‘voluntary’ workouts to work out on his own or with Marshall. But the main factor is he thought his worth was far greater than EVERY other team in the league, which is apparent by the fact he signed a 1 year deal.

        • Dis Guy Trublinsky (Johnnywad)

Or we could just embrace the obvious.

Pace has openly stated he intends to build through the draft. I say great.

Fangio would be a fool not to test the market. Let’s see what he does.

Everybody wanted Fuller gone a year ago. Now he’s suddenly the barometer of Pace’s ability to attract talent? Let’s see if he stays. I hope he does. But I’d be reluctant to give him Bouye money to find out he’s a one year wonder.

Alshon wanted out. Bears didn’t have a QB and Fox was the coach. Blame him? Now they likely have a QB and a shiny new coach.

The rumors of McDaniels not wanting to be here are stupid. His actions declare otherwise.

Deal is, there is enough information out there, some good, some bad, to spin this however you’d like it to fit your world view.

        • CanadaBear

If you’re taking Josh Norman’s word about some negotiations I think you’re being a little naive. He talks constantly and never says anything other than self-promotion.

  • AlbertInTucson

Sorry, Georgia DB, nothing “incidental” about that contact.

  • AlbertInTucson

This game has been VERY entertaining.

  • AlbertInTucson

    Calvin Ridley sighting, at last.

    • ButtonShoes

I don’t want to hear anything about drafting Ridley anymore. Chubb or bust.

      • AlbertInTucson

Chubb tonight: 16 carries for 21 yards.

        • ButtonShoes

          Bradley. Chubb.

          😐

          • AlbertInTucson

Early round RB is a luxury the Bears can not afford.

          • AlbertInTucson

Chubb didn’t do anything to give any scouts a”chub”, tonight.

          • tai

He’s talking about the Passrusher Bradley Chubb from NC State not Nick Chubb the RB from Georgia.

          • AlbertInTucson

            Ohhhh.

            THAT’S very different.

            Never mind.

            -Emily Litella

    • Think he’s falling to late first, maybe even early 2nd.

      • ButtonShoes

        Early 2nd he’s worth a flyer.

  • AlbertInTucson

    Georgia letting it slip away.

  • AlbertInTucson

    Stupid, stupid, penalty.

  • AlbertInTucson

Georgia better force a FG attempt right here…

  • ButtonShoes

Georgia may just be done for. They let this one go, they are going to feel it for a long time.

  • Do they put UGA the IV to sleep after this loss?

  • BerwynBomber

    This is no gimme …

    Hahaha he hooked it. OT.

No, that coin was just stupid.

Saban couldn’t handle the big boys which is why he squirmed out of the NFL like diarrhea from a TS thai taint.

      • I lived in Miami when Saban got hired. All my friends thought the Dolphins were gonna become Patriots 2.0 with Saban there.

Then he left a week after telling them he was coming back for the year. Many of my friends still call him Nick Satan.

Ooof Talisman is rough. Too much emphasis on player luck rather than proper decisions and if someone gets knocked down early, they just get to ‘participate’ in the game, rather than try to win.
