Hopeful Pace is in stealth mode, as he was for Tru, while searching for next HC.

    Dave Toub for HC.

      This is growing on me.

Maybe Pace is in NE to interview Belichick for the Bears job….Pace is sneaky

      • BerwynBomber

Pace would be redundant to Belichick.

        • ButtonShoes

Exactly. If the Bears somehow miraculously landed Belichick, Pace becomes irrelevant. He loses all his power to Belichick, and it shouldn’t be any other way.

          • Bear Instincts

Belicheck – President of Football Operations.
Pace – GM control of the 53 man roster
Philips – President of Business (never ever is he allowed near anything relating to the 53 man roster)

          • Irish Sweetness

            Fine!

    • BearDown100393

Reminds me of the Bulls demise somewhat.

“DaBearsBlog @dabearsblog Pats piece by @SethWickersham is terrific but I’m having trouble getting to the next step. How does this partnership dissolve? Kraft isn’t selling. So could Belichick or Brady be somewhere else next year? This is the best QB and coach in the sport.”

My best guess is Belichick would be the one to walk. He is the odd guy out.

Brady and Kraft are buddies. Kraft and his wife take Brady and Giselle on vacays together. Kraft was the one who interceded on Brady’s behalf.

Belichick has to be fucking livid. He’s been living and dying by his system for close to two decades there. No player was above it — Malloy, Law, Seymour, McGinnist, Vinateri, etc., etc.

Finally, he finds the heir apparent QB. Imagine how hard that is while winning championships? And Kraft says no, you can’t trade my Tommy..

If you are Belichick, why not finish out the year and then look for another franchise to hand you the keys as a VP of Football Operations.

Who knows, maybe they win it all and everything is hunky-dory. But could definitely see Hoodie being the one to walk. Odd guy out.

    • Dis Guy Trublinsky (Johnnywad)

Scary thought, but Belichick would slide right in to Green Bay, fill Thompson’s spot and jettison McCarthy forthwith. That’s one of a very few spots I could see him fitting.

      • BearDown100393

Belichick would love to dismantle Lombardi somewhat.

      • Bear Instincts

        Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

      • BerwynBomber

But the problem is their President Mark Murphy. He’s part of the Rodgers gravy train cabal. He doesn’t want exposed. And GB doesn’t have a strong owner to say, sorry boys. Time’s up. Hoodie is here.

Plus, as great/otherworldly as Rodgers has been, gotta imagine Hoodie might prefer a place with a younger QB.

Thing is, we might fit the bill but Pace is in the way. And Phillips might be too.

        • Dis Guy Trublinsky (Johnnywad)

I guess I don’t really understand how Green Bay’s power structure works.

They had Ted Thompson as a GM. And they have Mike McCarthy as HC. I’m not so sure McCarthy isn’t on the hot seat given all the recent movement. So why couldn’t Belichick move in there, assume Thompson’s GM Powers, fire McCarthy and become the HC with GM control? How is Murphy’s role in Green Bay any worse/better for Belichick in Green Bay than Krafts role is in New England?

My thought on the QB situation there is basically the same situation he’s been building in New England. Rodgers is not going to enjoy Brady longevity. But he’s not quite done yet. I’m sure Belichick could milk a few really good seasons yet from Rodgers while he seeks out his new Garoppolo.

I don’t know. It seems if he’s going to move, it has to be to a team seeking at minimum a GM and a coach they’re willing to part with.

          • BerwynBomber

            Valid points.

What I understand of Murphy’s role is that it is a little bit like what the worst Ted Phillips haters imagine Phillips role to be: he is a level between the owner and GM and occasionally interjects himself in football decisions. (If I’m not mistaken, Murphy will be the one hiring Thompson’s replacement.)

So IF that is the case, would Belichick wanna go anywhere near a place where someone can trump his football decisions? Because he would be leaving a place where an owner just did that and potentially killed the chances of a two QB career length dynasty.

Then again, Murphy is a football guy. He played in the league and was an AD at Northwestern. So maybe he and Belichick would hit it off.

          • BearDown100393

The difference is GB has a million red necks believing they own a NFL franchise. Somebody has to wear the suit and pretend to run day to day operations.

The McCaskeys have direct control and ownership of a business. None bothered to learn anything about pro football.

        • ButtonShoes

If George had an ounce of intelligence and gumption and went after Belichick, I think it would go without saying that Pace and Phillips are subordinate to him. Fuck the both of them if they think otherwise.

    • Russian Hacked Pacebot 3.0

completely agree with you. Bill has to be out of his mind right now with incredulity. Kraft has to know on some level that this was a terrible move. Brady is old as balls and it could be over at any minute. I don’t know what Jimmy G will be but a bunch of signs are pointing in the direction that they could have kept the train rolling once Brady went down.

But then you read that Jimmy G has the same agent as Brady and that they turned down a pretty lucrative contract extension which means Jimmy wasn’t willing to wait…or did the agent give bad info to Jimmy G to kowtow to Brady.

This is like a soap opera and it’s crazy that the most impressive modern day NFL dynasty could go down because of it. It may have ended because of Brady getting old anyway but this ending would be fucking craze balls.

      • Dis Guy Trublinsky (Johnnywad)

I hoped for this when I saw the trade go through. Fuck them.

      • BerwynBomber

Hah! G’s agent kowtowing to Brady would be another bizarre wrinkle.

    • SC Dave

He should go to Buffalo so he can kick the Patriots’ asses twice a year.

      • I would love to see if Bill can win with a Tyrod type QB.

Or what if Cousins bolts to go with wherever Bill lands?

    • Irish Sweetness

      Welcome to Chicago Bill.

      (shrugs)

  • BerwynBomber

Btw, credit to Colin Cowherd too. He has been positing this theory that Wickersham fleshed out in his piece ever since Belichick booted Brady’s personal trainer guy from all Pats facilities soon after the JimmyG trade.

    Fascinating stuff …

  • BearDown100393

If the New England Patriots win the Super Bowl, Bill Belichick walks away from Kraft/Brady.

    I don’t think he quits.

I think he puts himself to the ultimate test to rebuild another AFC team to go defeat New England.

    • Bear Instincts

Craft/Brady v Belichick = no winners if they go their separate ways. the magic they have is very rare and could possibly never be replicated/duplicated again

      • BearDown100393

I am perfectly okay with a battle of ego destroying the Patriots.

    • KentuckyBearsFan

It seems like the deal the Raiders apparently offered to Gruden would be way more suitable to Belichick.

Or he could go Any Given Sunday and become coach of the 49ers with Johnny G as his Willie Beamen.

      • BearDown100393

        My dark horse is Pittsburgh.

        • KentuckyBearsFan

          My darkest horse is Cleveland.

          • BearDown100393

Not impossible perhaps more in play if a bit younger.

          • KentuckyBearsFan

If he goes, wherever he goes, Belichick might want to show he can coach longer than Brady can play.

    • ButtonShoes

Belichick’s the guy I want. I know it’s unrealistic, but goddamn. That guy can fix EVERYTHING here.

The Bears need to make a run at him. It’s the one thing that could save George McCaskey’s dumb ass in this town.

      • BearDown100393

        Belichick vs Chicago Media

That might be better than the games.

        • Bear Instincts

always the sames score: Belichick (1) vs Chicago Media (0)

    • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

      J-E-T-S JETS! JETS! JETS!

Just to really stick it to NE.

  • Russian Hacked Pacebot 3.0

i think the time is coming in the NFL where it will be the norm that teams carry two high draft pick QB’s on the roster at one time.
This Patriots thing has me thinking.

    • Dis Guy Trublinsky (Johnnywad)

The Patriots nailed it. The exception being Brady being this good, this long. They spent Jimmy’s rookie deal waiting on Brady to fade. Good problem to have, but nonetheless a problem.

      • BerwynBomber

Plus, Brady obviously has TB12 franchise/marketing ambitions and those are contingent upon him not retiring anytime soon. Probably another reason why Belichick banned Brady’s personal trainer from all Pats facilities.

The TB12 shit probably pisses off the Hoodie.

        • BearDown100393

          It is definitely out there.

        • CanadaBear

NTM all 3 guys have monstrous egos and they all think they could do this well without the other two. Hope it all goes up in flames after this season. Not that I’m hoping Brady gets injured but at some point he will show that he’s human and will get smoked.

          • BerwynBomber

I can’t fault Belichick (from what I know of the situation).

The guy created a cold, pure business template that was always about moving off aging players before they became too expensive, replaceable or unproductive. His drafting obviously hasn’t been perfect — whose is? — but it seemed like one fuck of a successful strategy.

And then he finally lands and develops THE most important replacement player to the entire operation and the owner jumps in and plays ultimate fanboy and tells him no my fave will not be replaced.

Has to grind his gears to no end.

          • CanadaBear

I just hope this is their last hurrah. Probably not but I’m still hoping. Really tired of all 3 of them.

          • BerwynBomber

I’d be semi-interested to see Hoodie apply his template elsewhere even if it were in a non-coaching situation — like Parcells, Holmgren and Coughlin did.

But yeah, never rooted for the Pats except during their Colts games during the Peyton rivalry. Always gotta kick out of the Colts gagging.

Of course the irony being that we would serve as their ultimate patsy so they could get their long-awaited ring.

    • leftcoastdave

PB, you nailed what I was thinking about this draft class which is QB loaded. While I would not take a QB in the first round, preferring Trade Down, Edge or OT as better options, I do want to see a QB drafted for the team to start grooming. This year showed the extent to which the mental aspect of playing the position in the NFL is light years ahead of the college game.

    • CanadaBear

The problem is there are only about 15 QB’s in the league that are really good. Trying to turn 15 into 64 (32×2) seems problematic.

      • BerwynBomber

Yup. Closest thing that works seems the Ron Wolf strategy: which is draft a QB nearly every year even if you have a franchise guy in place, which to a degree is what GB did when they had Favre.

Actually Hoodie did that at NE too — Mallet, Cassell, Hoyer, JimmyG, Brisett, etc.

        • Irish Sweetness

The Ron Burgundy strategy is our way.

      • Bear Instincts

You don’t really need 2 good QB’s on the roster. You need the Patriots system which is to constantly draft a QB just in case something happens. If the QB is good you ship them off for draft picks unless your current QB is at the end of the line or close to it.

If the patriots have a system it is that no player is bigger than the system…not even Brady. Brady knows this so also knows that Hoodie would cut him. Brady said so himself in an interview earlier this year.

      • Russian Hacked Pacebot 3.0

i’m still working out the science behind it.

Maybe i’ll tweak the idea to each team having a stiff, nerd ass whiteboy pocket passer and then a mobile black mega athlete QB.

Get the mobile guy extra reps so should the need arise where a team doesn’t want the white QB to awkwardly trip or take a needless sack because he is white and clumsy you could put in the freak athlete mobile black QB to execute the play.

It sounds racist but whites just suck at football is all.

        • CanadaBear

Well it is racist but I’m pretty sure you’re not. Maybe the Bears can get rid of MT and ride with MG!

    • I don’t think I would be totally against drafting a QB.

Yeah, it would suck not being able to draft a badass as Edge, OT or WR, but QB is all important, and like I predicted last April, this QB class is gonna be stacked.

Jeff wants to say the Bears will attract cuz of Trub, but many teams/HCs I’m sure had diff grades on him, and maybe a few didn’t like him coming out, and might prefer their own guy.

Def gotta keep an open mind, though I do expect Rosen, Darnold and Allen to be gone by #8.

      • CanadaBear

With a bright offensive mind or two in the coaching hierarchy, I’d ride with MT and get that edge rusher or OT. Maybe it’s justifying bad QB play but a hideously beat up OL, almost nothing at WR, limited TE’s (I’m being kind) and Foxy/Loggains’ O, I’d say MT did pretty well.

        • That would be the more traditional route and what will likely unfold.

However, if Mayfield, Darnold or Rudolph fall to #8. Yikes.

Didn’t we pass on Vadgers cuz Rex Grossman was “our” QB?

          • CanadaBear

I could see them trading out of #8 if that happened. Nothing good like that ever happens to the Beloved. You watch, there will be 7 can’t miss picks!

          • Irish said if we had lost 1 more game, Bears would have the #4 pick.

That would def have gotten us either the top OT or Edge or a boatload of picks.

But I’m sure beating the Ravens in an ugly win was more important for creating a Fox winning culture.

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

DAMN YOU JORDAN HOWARD for having a great game early in the season!!!

          • Irish Sweetness

Basically, yes. Or .. thank you Mike Glennon.

          • CanadaBear

Kinda damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

          • Irish Sweetness

This is why every one of those wins was bittersweet. The last two were hard to enjoy because (for me) Barkley was just that much further away from our grasp.

  • ButtonShoes

Boy, it would be nice if we had ownership that had the wherewithal to snag Belichick if he walked from NE. It would be the football equivalent of the Cubs getting Theo.

    • BearDown100393

Lol Belichick meeting Ted and George

    https://www.windycitygridiron.com/2018/1/5/16851620/chicago-bears-the-truth-behind-coaching-experiences-selection-process-proactive-reactive-injuries
Following a complete change in the strength and conditioning staff, as well as the training staff, season-ending injuries to key players have become a frequent event for the Bears. The Loop created an excellent article detailing the dramatic rise of injuries in Chicago, and noted that mass injuries have followed John Fox with every stop as Head Coach. A likely culprit of this phenomena, is the weekly preparations for games.

    • SC Dave

I have questioned the competence of S&T and trainers for over two years on this blog. The guys are bums and all need to be fired.

      • CanadaBear

Let’s hope it’s that simple and the injury tsunami leaves with Foxy.

        • Bear Instincts

Hard to argue with the trail of carnage that follows everywhere Firefox goes. Might explain why Freeman and Jeffery turned to PED’s

          • SC Dave

It could. Hell, the damn trainer’s techniques could have been aggravating their issues.

      • Irish Sweetness

        I concur.

Lamar Jackson declares for the draft. My dream of an Ebony and Ivory QB room is a possibility.

Is it me or does Lamar Jackson have the athleticism and body control that makes Mitch look like Stork?

If only we didn’t have to fill 14 of 22 positions…..

    • CanadaBear

MT is the same height and 15 lbs heavier.

      • Russian Hacked Pacebot 3.0

but the runs were sick. point taken tho…..

    • BerwynBomber

I’ve seen him a few times. He’s wildly inaccurate. (Had four INTs last bowl game.) His agent should be telling him to work on converting to another position. His athleticism is definitely there.

      • Has a 57% comp rating.

Poor (esp when considering that most of those routes are prolly the HS read-option type)

63% is the bar for me when it comes to %comp.

  • BearDown100393

Maybe…. just maybe McDaniels is an evil genius.

Stokes a triumvirate breakup (Belichick, Brady, Kraft)
Leverages HC interviews right in front of triumvirate
    Tanks Brady and offense
    Triumvirate collapses, Belichick walks
McDaniels approached by Kraft to “save” continuity
McDaniels wants full Belichick like absolute power
    Kraft agrees
    Begins 2018 with drafting quarterback

    • Bear Instincts

      genius

    • Irish Sweetness

They had Brady’s replacement and they ditched him. That wasn’t smart.

  • evantonio

Gruden. 10 years, $100 million from the Raiders.

No word of ownership stake. Yet.

    • Bear Instincts

how quickly are they going to cut bait?

      • Dis Guy Trublinsky (Johnnywad)

        I’m about 55/45 expecting that.

    • SC Dave

10 years is ridiculous. Presumably there is an out for the Raiders loooong before then.

And if Raiders fans are hoping they have the new John Madden, I suspect they will be disappointed.

      • BearDown100393

The contract is voided once Big Sheldon invites Mark out to the desert for a friendly chat.

        • willbest

I still can’t believe that bowl cut played the mafia.

          • BearDown100393

Agreed. IMO that will neither be forgiven or forgotten. Revenge will occur.

      • willbest

I suspect the team has an out if he fails to make the playoffs 3 years in a row or something to that effect. Or maybe years 5 through 10 aren’t guaranteed. I wouldn’t even give hoodie a 10 year deal. Though I suspect Hoodie makes more than 10 million a year.

        • As far as I know, every head coaching contract in the NFL is 100% guaranteed. Those guys get paid even if they lose, and then don’t commit more than 4-5 years at a time because they don’t want to get stuck in a bad spot.

I wonder if this one is different, and if that might start a change in these contracts.

          • willbest

From a contract perspective, the sky is the limit on how creative these things can get. They are so rare (4-5 per year) that there isn’t much of an industry standard. Gruden also happens to be unique. He isn’t just a coach, he is a personality. His visibility will be so much greater than pretty much every other coach. Its possible that he will even overshadow Carr, which may be a good thing or a really bad thing.

        • Irish Sweetness

Hoodie needs to win a lot of games over the next ten years to even get within sniffing distance of Shula.

          • willbest

7.5 more years, if he keeps winning the way he has been he will beat Shula

The rums from the west indies are amazing. Guyana rums, called Demerara Rums are like a fine whiskey and have amazing flavor.
Dark Jamaican Rums (not Myers) have insane flavor.
Smith and Cross makes an overproof rum that is one of the most unique flavors I’ve ever had. I make the traditional “painkiller” with it. Makes my lower back pain subside within a minute….or so my brain thinks.

Turns out Bacardi makes a shit ton of different runs. Most of them we don’t see here. Doesn’t really matter because we just dump coke in it.

But their top shelf stuff, was really amazing. I’d do that trip again in a second. Well, if Puerto Rico still had cable TV, and running water. Maybe when that comes back, I’ll go again.

True but most NFL teams could probably sell out a 100,000 seat stadium for a PLAYOFF game in less than a day.

  • Gotta agree with Jeff. Those NE coaches may be sucking at the Bill teat.

But that concern also can be applied to some other top HC candidates (Nagy-Walrus; Flip-Pederson)

My vote is still for Flip.

Gotta find the ext Bill, not the guy next to him.

Of course, if Bill actually wants out of NE…

    • SC Dave

Hoodie may just hang them up, unless he wants revenge on the Patriots.

Best place for that is the Jets, but that article says he hates them.

      Buffalo should call him.

      • willbest

Jets should hate Hoodie. He dicked them over once already.

      • I don’t know if I see him ‘retiring’ not on his own term, but as a coup by Kraft-Brady

I don’t think that will sit well with him.

Though if he wins another SB, who knows?

  • willbest

“Bears are going to give White every opportunity to make an impact.” – Jeff

They already have. He has to earn his place on the field now. Trubisky >>>>> White. The new HC won’t give a shit about White. And nobody is going to be looking to force feed him the ball the way we did in 15 and 16 because that is bad for Trubiksy’s development.

The guy is done, unless he rises to the occasion. The only favor he is going to get is that if he looks remotely competent they won’t cut him because they have to pay him anyway.

    • CanadaBear

I’d love to see White pull a Fuller and have a great year but that seems highly unlikely.

      • Russian Hacked Pacebot 3.0

Maybe just gain 10 more lbs and become cannon fodder over the middle to move the chains until his head falls off?

          • Russian Hacked Pacebot 3.0

the only way we’ll know is if we make him do it, then send him on an underneath route right into the path of Anthony Barr.

          • Irish Sweetness

It would certainly slow him down. And if speed was your forte …

        • White’s frame was pretty maxed out coming out of college.

That was one of his pluses initially, that he was a physical specimen.

Guys that big typically don’t run 4.3.

          Now we know why.

      • Bear Instincts

same thing was said about fuller….maybe fangio can pull double duty as DC and WR coach

    • Never know about a guy being done.

I didn’t think Tre could come back so soon and make an impact, yet he did.
      We all wrote off Fuller.

If it’s between White and some Braverman UFDA, White will still get major slack.

Just depends on how aggressively the new regime attacks the WR hole.

If Pace sits back thinking Meredith, Wright and some mid-rd WR are the answer, White may make the roster.

If Pace goes out and signs a top WR in FA, and drafts one in the 2nd rd, then White might be all but done.

      • willbest

We wrote fuller off not for his talent, but for his drive. And the jury is still out on the latter. Maybe we were wrong about the drive and it really was some lingering problem that he opted for extended rehab for a better career. Maybe he will find his way back to the hot tub after he gets another $30 mil guarantees.

White from what I can tell is motivative. He is 1) Brittle and 2) not very good

        • Bear Instincts

Brittle – so far yes but that might change
Not very good – he has not played a full season of games so that is hard to determine. maybe he would have gotten better as he played more games

          • SC Dave

“… *maybe* would have gotten better…”

Not a good phrase for someone that was supposed to be a #1.

          • willbest

I am fond of this comparison, but White is worse than Bellamy, but with 10 times the opportunity, and without having to split focus with ST.

And we now have 3 years in a row brittle. So either that is an impressive run of bad luck, or it is who he is.

        • Fuller was extremely inconsistent even when “healthy” though.

So it wasn’t just his health, drive but also play in question.

In fact, Fuller is still highly inconsistent. One day he looks AP, the next he’s getting burned.

But that’s really most CBs not named Lattimore.

That’s why it’ll be interesting to see how much an above avg CB will demand (esp off one yr).

          Curios about Prince as well.

I get the feeling that Pace won’t move on either till the next HC is in place.

To me, either guys are scheme flexible, but maybe Pace wants to give the next HC some say in personnel ASAP.

          • ButtonShoes

The easy way to deal with Fuller is to tag him. See if this year wasn’t a fluke.

          • Irish Sweetness

How do you fluke great coverage and instincts … for a whole season??

          • ButtonShoes

I dunno. The same way you become a complete non-entity the previous 2 seasons? I don’t trust Fuller’s production this year.

    • BearDown100393

      Cut White. Move forward.

    • SC Dave

“The new HC won’t give a shit about White.”

      Hope this is true.

    • ButtonShoes

White’s a bust but you get him for one more year on his rookie contract. So leave him on the roster and see if he can be useful. Probably not at all but it doesn’t cost you much.

      • willbest

A roster spot. It costs us a roster spot.

        • ButtonShoes

Yup. We got 53 of them. I think one can go to White.

      • Irish Sweetness

I swear I still have hope for the kid. He turns in an 8 TD 1000 yd season and he’s only doing what he was drafted to do.

I can’t afford a 3,000 bottle of bourbon but the word on the street is that by aging the Old Weller which is made out of the same mash as the Van Winkle at the Buffalo Trace distillery that you can create a very similar product.

I got Pappy, George T Stagg and Handy Sazerac this year. I wasn’t able to find the William Larue Weller though. 🙁

          • Russian Hacked Pacebot 3.0

I’m a rum guy so I don’t know if I’d appreciate pappy as much as some but I fucking love science and love getting a great deal so the thought of taking above average bourbon and creating something excellent excites me.

          • Sactowns#1

Prices are regulated in Oregon so I got the Pappy for $69. Wasn’t a bad deal at all. Now, was driving to every shop in town and bugging them repeatedly a giant pain? Yes, yes it was.

          • CaponeBot 1.0

what the fuck? that’s a 600.00 bottle. Some of them go up to 3,000

Sac, take out a 401k loan right now, buy hundreds of bottles and sell them for 10X the cost. You’ll be wearing chinchilla fucking coats mang. Chinchilla!

          • Sactowns#1

Pappy used to be on shelves for years at around $50. Suddenly the masses found it and everyone started jacking up the prices. Retailers in other states get the bottles for around $60. What they charge the consumer is… well whatever the market will bear.

          • Irish Sweetness

My old man used to breed chinchillas. He never got past the “I used to breed Chinchillas” part.

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

FYI, Since Oregon is a control state, they actually keep an online inventory of every shop. No need to drive from shop to shop. Just need to search for it on the site listed below. (search Van Winkle)

Interesting that there is only one bottle of Pappy Van Winkle left in the state, so you might want to make a trip.

            http://www.oregonliquorsearch.com/

          • Sactowns#1

Nah that site is worthless for these things. The bottles get entered by the shop employees so anything rare is held in the back room and never entered into the OLCC computers. I’ll bet you dollars to dimes if you call that shop and ask if they have that bottle they’ll say no, it was entered in by mistake. Most of the shops try to hold things back for their buddies or their bar accounts. It’s a pretty rigged game here.

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

I did not realize that it was entered in by the shop employees. I figured it was recorded by the distributors. But that would not prevent employees and shop owners from holding it back.

      • Russian Hacked Pacebot 3.0

Sac, in true south side of Chicago fashion I called my liquor store and the guy says they just ran out of Weller. He says it’s not a big seller but he could put a special order in for me. I can become the Capone of the blog. I’ll buy the Weller at 25.00 a bottle, age it in my own rickhouse (read: basement), create Poor Man’s Pappy and sell it for 125.00 a bottle.
I don’t need to be greedy so i’ll start with a low price. I will create a “Poor Mans Pappy Tasting Club” which basically will be a online group to illegally sell my product without paying city, state and federal taxes.
        What could go wrong?

      • evantonio

Lions denied Packers request to interview Teryl Austin. Seems kind of a dick move quite frankly. I know you want to give your HC all the options, but the Ford family better not be looking to saddle the new HC with the old DC. Maybe its just because they are a division rival and if it were an AFC team they wouldn’t give a fuck.

    • willbest

update: it is just because they are the packers. Austin is interviewing to be the bengals DC today.

Just watched an excellent BBC documentary called Overpopulation, presented by Hans Gosling, Statistician.

Very positive overall. It’s got a lot of infographics, but they’re interesting, mixed in with film footage). One of my 7 year olds commented that it was a very good film from behind the iPad, and she doesn’t do that often.

If you can’t spare the 59 minutes :

After 1800 there was a baby boom. A massive one, especially in Africa and Asia.

The number of babies being produced peaked in 2000 and has stabilized at 2 billion. The idea that there are more children being produced is false, allegedly. (sources: bbc.co.uk/dontpanic – very Beeb!)

50 years ago in Africa and Asia, the average woman was having 5 babies. Today it’s 2.5. Even in Bangladesh was 8 babies (6 would die) 50 years ago, now it’s 2.5.

The world’s population has indeed doubled in 50 years, but this is not from more babies, but increased medicinal availability and scientific breakthrough in health. Old people living longer.

The population will peak at the end of the century at 11 Billion and will then taper off from the reduced child per woman trend.

That still leaves big questions as to how we energise 11 Billlion people, but it is trending to drop.

By 11 billion, 10% of the population will live in the west with the largest number of people being in Asia and Africa. Migration could be an issue here one would think.

If you earn $100 perday you are in the richest billion.

If you earn $1 you are … well, guess.

If you earn $1 perday your goal is a pair of shoes.

The next billion desire a bicycle, and live by the creed “a home is not a home without a bicycle”.

People in poorer countries are getting ‘better off’ relative to 50 years ago, and they are moving away from poverty. The one billion in extreme poverty are pretty much stuck.

It also looked at the attitudes of the British, both from the common man, and from exclusively well-educated people. 12% of British people on average (from four possible answers) thought 20% of the planet was literate. (80% of the planet can read and write). OF the ‘educated’ .. .this number was 10%. They were more wrong.

    • Cormonster

Thanks for the recommendation. That was worth the watch and enlightening. The success in alleviating extreme poverty since I was a kid is a story that is almost never told in books or the news.

Not sure if your familiar with him, but I’ve found some the books and speeches by Bjorn Lomborg to be really interesting. He’s the head of the Copenhagen Consensus, and they have some really good ideas on how to reduce poverty with the most bang for the buck – things like AIDS and malaria prevention, better sanitation and drinking water, and removing protectionist trade practices in Europe and the Americas for farm goods from the poorest countries. The harder nut to crack though is corrupt governments with poor to non-existent court systems and the lack of property rights.

Thailand seems to be doing better, with luxuries like dick whitening coming into vogue.

      • CaponeBot 1.0

Dick whitening? From the medical guru that brought us ass bleaching?

      • Irish Sweetness

I was also bemused at the rarity of anything-media on overpopulation – I checked out the people behind the doc and it does not appear to be propaganda.

        • Cormonster

Yeh, that is refreshing. He also didn’t get all stupid about the global warming hysteria and talked about how we can’t deny the poorest access to energy in the quest to “save the earth from climate change” nonsense.

    • AlbertInTucson

      Just to be clear.

Yes, I am a product of “The Baby Boom”

But, NO, not that one in 1800.

    • KentuckyBearsFan

Literacy in America used to be better or achieved at much younger ages, if you’ve read or heard any of John Taylor Gatto’s stuff. He was teacher of the year in New York City and New York before getting canned.

      http://www.naturalchild.org/guest/john_gatto.html

“Our form of compulsory schooling is an invention of the state of Massachusetts around 1850. It was resisted – sometimes with guns – by an estimated eighty per cent of the Massachusetts population, the last outpost in Barnstable on Cape Cod not surrendering its children until the 1880’s when the area was seized by militia and children marched to school under guard.

Now here is a curious idea to ponder. Senator Ted Kennedy’s office released a paper not too long ago claiming that prior to compulsory education the state literacy rate was 98% and after it the figure never again reached above 91% where it stands in 1990.”

      • SC Dave

Great article! Those with progeny that are inmates in the American education system should read this.

        • KentuckyBearsFan

Gatto has a book called “The Underground History of American Education.” A bunch of his speeches are still on youtube.

I can’t see the Giants giving up significant draft picks though.

Belichick has nothing left to prove. In New England or anywhere else. If he wants to keep coaching, it’s because he’s bored and wants a new challenge that is interesting to him. Otherwise he could just retire whenever he feels like it.
