Trubisky’s Presence Is Good For Glennon

| May 24th, 2017

As the Chicago Bears go through OTAs this week, much of the focus is on Mike Glennon’s feelings. But the reality of the situation is this: Glennon needs to play well for himself more than the Bears need him to play well.

Right after the Bears traded up for Mitch Trubisky, some of Chicago’s most prominent media members focused on how the team’s presumed starter not being happy could have a negative impact on the Bears 2017 season. The problem with that logic is that it ignores what kind of impact Glennon playing poorly and pouting will have on his own career. Regardless of who else is on the Bears’ roster, this is Glennon’s big audition. He needs to play well and be professional or he’ll never get another chance. He knows this. If he doesn’t, he’ll spend the season on the bench.

The base case scenario for Glennon is that Trubisky is every bit the player the Bears think he is but John Fox chooses to stick with the veteran. Glennon then puts together a productive season and the Bears move him to a contender for a high draft pick.

And I wouldn’t rule that out.

I think Glennon can have a very productive 2017 season. But, let’s be clear, good quarterbacks and productive quarterbacks should never be confused.

The Bears have a good supporting cast and an offensive coordinator who knows how to scheme even the likes of Josh Bellamy and Deonte Thompson open. Hell, Matt Barkley’s 16 game pace for the games he started and finished was nearly 4,500 yards and 26 touchdowns (of course, at that same pace, he would’ve thrown 32 interceptions).

Is Glennon better than Barkley? The Bears sure seem to think so and my guess is so does everybody in the league.

As for the relationship between Glennon and Trubisky, that does not matter at all. Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers hated each other. So did Joe Montana and Steve Young. It turned out OK.

Glennon’s best course of action is to just go to work hard and produce. If he does that both he and the Bears brass will have jobs next year.

I agree wholeheartedly! But, the media needs to create something out of nothing for the purpose of creating more news. As of late, fake news with shock value is best.

“The base case scenario for Glennon is that Trubisky is every bit the player the Bears think he is but John Fox chooses to stick with the veteran. Glennon then puts together a productive season and the Bears move him to a contender for a high draft pick.”

That sounds like your best case scenario. Not necessarily Glennon’s.

    • willbest

I was going to say, the best case scenario for Glennon is for him to look like a top 10 guy and force a restructuring of his contract.

      • BerwynBomber

Of course. Moreover, I can’t imagine any best case scenario for Glennon involves the words “Trubisky is every bit the player the Bears think he is”.

        Let’s be honest here.

So 2 examples of it working out is evidence that it doesn’t matter?

pretty sure Brees didn’t like Rivers in SD, although not sure how many people would actually like Rivers.

    • BerwynBomber

Not to mention that those cases involved highly competitive superstars/HoFers. No one knows how Glennon and Trubisky are wired.

  • Big Mike

    Andrew nailed it.

Worth kicking tires on him. Need more back up OT competition.

The real beauty is there is no way to know whether the subs are there or not.

  • CanadaBear

This stuff kills me. These guys are in a dog eat dog profession where contracts aren’t guaranteed and stars are unceremoniously released. Glennon’s a big boy and doesn’t need a weatherman to tell him which way the wind’s blowing. Sure he was pissed and disappointed. Life goes on. If his reaction would have been anything different than what it was would have been a shock. Hope he has a great year.

    • willbest

No doubt. But his agent earned his 3% ensuring that he is going to get at least 4 starts. That is all Glennon can really ask for in terms of his long term success. Having the opportunity. And if it doesn’t pan out, then he still got generational wealth out of the deal.

      • CanadaBear

No doubt. I have no issue with Pace signing him and giving him a year tryout. Hope it works out for both Glennon and the Bears.

    • BerwynBomber

Agreed. I’d also add that AD’s argument might be based up on strawman as I have heard very few, if any, media types fretting over Glennon’s feelings and how it will effect his performance. Some had fun with the news that the organization invited him to a draft party and others were interested in how his first OTA presser would go but that’s about it.

He’s had the rug pulled from beneath him a couple of times before so this is nothing new.

      • leftcoastdave

It is all quite silly. These idiots do not see that Pace likes these dudes with a chip on their shoulder? Glenny knows that the sneakers stomping behind him are real and he now has his chance to produce. Same with each and every draft choice this year, as with Howard, Hall and the others last year. Kwick stepped up out of the fourth round. Why? He was given his shot. Hall and Bush now this year? Watch and see. They know it is put up or shut up time.

I expect many, including Glenny, to step up and say they belong. That is what a team needs, not prim a-donnas like AJ or Fuller.

    Good lord, Jeff. (Rolls eyes)

    • CanadaBear

Indeed. Absolutely nobody was interested in Glennon in the off season (pretty sure Pace was bidding against himself) but now he’s going to become a hot commodity. Uh, no.

      • King of DBB

Also, we’re going to just go ahead and Carson Wentz Trub? In the hopes he can swim?

No scout thinks he is ready, and may be two seasons away from ready. The WHOLE PLAN from Pace was to buy his career time by putting Trub out there like Godot.

Now Pace is gonna go Sonny Weaver Jr. and blow that plan up? No. Don’t think so.

Or Romo, or a team might just fuck it and grab Kaep. Then again, looking at Glennon’s contract anybody acquiring him in trade would only have to pay him $10 million since we have already paid him $8 mil.

But then what are you getting for Glennon? A 3rd? maybe a conditional 2nd. Nobody is giving up anything of value for him when its more likely he is Josh McCown than Kirk Cousins. And which beastly D is losing its QB1 a week before the season starts and needs a game manager and a little luck to make the playoffs. The Donks? The Cards? Whats the Gmen D look like?

The Vikes again, but fuck Pace if he is going to help a division rival. I wouldn’t even bother watching this season if he did that.

        • BerwynBomber

Can’t see either Romo or Cutler giving up the booth for the field, especially the former who has one of the top four analyst jobs in the game.

Cutler I would’ve thought more possible but his last couple of statements only expressed half-hearted interest in playing this year. Got the impression he might be more jacked about announcing.

Btw, I think Cutler will be a better analyst than Romo. Romo seems like a good guy — smart, sincere, charming, etc. But he also seems bland/boring.

Cutler is just as smart but not as cautious. My bet is he will be more interesting.

        • leftcoastdave

Stoopid to even think he might be traded this year. More stoopid would be to think it smart to throw Trub into the mix in the first half of the season. Glenny shows up and his value is quadrupled at minimum. Until then, good luck. He needs to show his stripes. Trub out there early? Duh? Let the dude learn the damn game.

    • leftcoastdave

Yep. Come on, Jeff. Write an article for the ages telling us your brilliant opinion on how Trub should start day one. Go on record, dude.

Glennon got da memo that the fruit don’t hang too low in da chi. The dude got like a foot on Trub made trub look russel height.

        • CanadaBear

That should be a fun party. I love costume parties. I hate them until I arrive. I hate having to go through all the trouble and bother to think up something and then make it happen. As soon as you walk in the party, all that goes away and let the laughs begin. I went to one years ago where the host was dressed like a conehead viking. He said he was Conehead the Barbarian. Gotta love that. I went as the chiro in town who had just killed his wife with a chainsaw (cut her up in pieces). I had a doctor’s scrubs, half a mannequin and a chain saw (with absolutely no gas in it) for a costume. I actually won first prize. Pretty sure that amounted to nothing other than lots of laughs.

Back about 40 years ago my buddy invited me to his family’s masquerade party. What he didn’t tell me was nobody speaks for the first hour if they don’t want to be recognized. After an hour people take off their masks and the place was up for grabs. I was dressed up like Dolly Parton and was constantly getting groped. I was crazy high and all these people kept coming up to me and getting in my face but not saying anything. Surreal. One of the best parties I’ve ever been to in my life.

          • willbest

We have done a murder mystery party where you dress up, theme food and music. You are given character profiles and talking points but are otherwise free to ad lib. It was surprisingly a lot of fun.

          • CanadaBear

As long as you go into it with a good attitude those parties are always fun. Guys that are dragged to these parties always bitch and complain but if they would just go with it, they would have a good time.

  • Irish Sweetness

I just realized what the headline is : “Trubisky’s Presence Is Good For Glennon”

Glennon’s pissed. He reckons his career is now exactly a year long. How in the wide world of sports would that make him feel good?

    • King of DBB

Andy Grove school of fuck-you capitalism:

“Always fear for your job, always know there is somebody better and younger that can do it instead of you.”

      • willbest

I wish I could fail at capitalism with an $18 million parachute.

    • willbest

I presume it means he will be plenty motivated to do his best. And if his best is starting NFL, he will land a job someplace.

Though I am tempted to subscribe to the theory Andy realizes the Bears are going to continue to be a dogshit organization saddled with some combination of incompetent coaching, injuries, and drama. Therefore, it Glennon dodged a bullet in that he is only going to be here 1 year rather than forced to play out his contract.

  • Fisherman695

Glennon playing for job somewhere else next year and another 15 to 20 million.

    • willbest

It would be very difficult for him to make more than the 15 million he signed the contract for. If he played well enough to merit a contract restructure with 2 years left on his contract (ie. throws for 5k yards with a 3 to 1 TD:INT ratio), it is unlikely the Bears would trade him. Otherwise he would need to get cut, and then sign a deal someplace else. But if a team isn’t willing to give up a 3rd rounder for a guy, they aren’t likely to sign him to a 15+ million deal.

  • BerwynBomber

Pretty funny that we are already making plans for Glennon to have a good year in order to ship him out. Ah, the embarrassment of riches we have at the QB position.

    • CanadaBear

It’s kinda like that first rd pick for Cutler. Oh, wait, nevermind.

  • BerwynBomber

    New thread …

  • Aaron T. Starks

Noone should give two shits about Glennon’s feelings. The starting job is being HANDED to him. All he has to do is not play poorly and he starts. It’s his to lose. So what if Trubisky is there. He’ll never see the field if Glennon plays well.

Play well and it’s all good. Don’t play well and you’ll be benched. It isn’t complicated.
