Three Final Thoughts for Vikings at Bears

| October 9th, 2017

(1) There’s no reason to downplay the historic nature of tonight’s game. The Bears intend for Mitch Trubisky to be their starting quarterback for the next decade plus and tonight he will take his first snaps in a Bears uniform. At home. In front of the entire country. While I will urge fans to be patient with the results, especially over these first twelve games, I don’t begrudge anyone’s giddiness tonight. Tonight is what’s fun about loving a team.

(2) My fiercest criticism of Vic Fangio through four weeks is his use of Leonard Floyd. I understand the schematic rationale for dropping him into coverage at the rate the Bears do but they’re getting very little rush off the edge. Floyd is their best edge rusher and if the Bears don’t make Sam Bradford uncomfortable tonight, he’ll have no problem stockpiling yardage to this terrific receiving corps.

(3) Markus Wheaton might be the most interesting player to watch tonight not named Trubisky. The Bears signed him for his speed, explosiveness and big play ability. When they signed him they believed they stole a player with tremendous upside. Now they’re giving him an accurate, strong-armed quarterback who can take advantage of his skills. Let’s hope this week was enough time for the two to get on the same page. (Prediction: Trubisky takes a shot to Wheaton deep…early.)

Just Kidding. I am excited to see the rook in action.

  • Sahr Gborie

I don’t see how fangio does not drop Floyd into coverage with Willie Young out for the year when looking at the vikings high powered offense.

Outside of the Floyd concern I’m excited for what this teams attitude and style of play will be tonight. Looking forward to seeing this team feed off the hope of Trubisky

I will be getting no work done at work today…lol

    • Irish Sweetness

Naturally Vic thinks the best thing to do with your best pass rusher is to drop them back into coverage.

I mean … it makes sense.

      • Sahr Gborie

I would like to think that Fangio knows what he is doing but doubt is starting to creep in. Maybe he was not the reason the 49ers defense was so good

        • Scharfinator

Considering our defensive play with the shit situations they’ve been put in this season, he’s done pretty well. Maybe his use of Floyd isn’t what we want, but who knows what kinda shit we’d be getting burned on if they were doing something else.

  • SC Dave

Well, down to about 14 hours, JW.

  • Big Mike

My calming thought for Trubisky expectations is this. For this game, this season, the bar is to better than Glennon. Pretty easy. No lose situation.

My irrational fan thought is unless he does well, I will be anxious until he does.

  • Scharfinator

Getting caught up on some weekend game highlights – there are some bad fucking teams in the league.

*IF* MT can give us some decent QB play, we should do okay the rest of this year.

  • Sahr Gborie

Even more excited to see Trubisky play after watching Watson throw bombs against the Chiefs. Watson’s bomb to Hopkins in the 4th at with 3 minutes to go was a thing of beauty. You just cant teach that. be afraid of the Texans. Be very afraid.

    • SC Dave

Wouldn’t that be something the have receivers that catch jump balls?

  • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

So do we have anything to worry about in regards to the Vikings run game now that Cook is out? None of their other backs have played much this year. Latavius Murray is coming off ankle surgery this last off season.

    • Sahr Gborie

Not at all. Our line is a great run stuffer

    • Irish Sweetness

And still Fangio won’t stack em up.

      • SC Dave

When you contend that something that is not broken somehow needs to be fixed by your proposals, it makes people shake their heads.

  • BearDown100393

Win, lose, play great, play not so great, I am in Mitch Trubisky’s corner tonight. He’s earned this role as starter. It is his to keep. It is his to lose. I am less worried about Mitch bringing the goods than I am regarding Fox and his staff doing right by him.

The clock on Ryan Pace ticks tonight.

    • Sahr Gborie

Tonight is the start of the countdown. The SB clock for Pace really begins when FA hits followed by the draft.

  • Nancy Glennon

Mikey told me that he and Mr. Sanchez have been helping Mitchell all week in the film room making sure he is ready to go tonight. It was hard for Mikey and Mark to get Mitchel to focus because every half hour Mitchell would yell ‘I love kissing TITTIES’ and would force them to put some porn videos up on the big screen for 5 minutes. Mikey said Mark finally came up with a compromise that if Mitchell was able to correctly identify 10 defensive schemes in a row they would reward him with porn. It is working really well according to Mikey.

    • Scharfinator

I can’t believe you let Mikey be a part of that smut!

      • Nancy Glennon

well since I am pretty sure his wife left him for being such a crappy QB, I decided to let it slide, especially since he is only watching it to help someone else. Seriously that tramp has not been around much the last week.

        • Phillip MyCrevice

          Pernell makes quite the temptation.

          Mike can always Cuck

  • Joecashflow

Love da Bears ! This is start of new era, win or lose. The Biscuit Era. My expectations are that we see hope. Nothing more. I have seen how he can shake, rattle and rollout. He can buy time, tonight I wanna see that pay dividends. Make his O line look good. Give the D a blow by keeping them off the field with some first downs. Even control time of possession, be it ground game or in the air. Would love a huge night for thunder and lightening ! Bear down Bears ! Big night ! We all are watching ! It’s not too big for a rookie QB who is prepared!

  • evantonio

I know it’s Trubs Day, but can we take a moment to appreciate another rookie QB throwing 10 TDs over the past 2 games?

Without looking it up, I think it’s safe to say we’ve never had a QB throw that many TDs over the span of 2 games. I’d be surprised if we had more than 2 who’ve done that over the course of 3 games.

    • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

      NO.

    • SC Dave

Why? He is not on The Only Team That Matters.

  • CanadaBear

Today is Canadian Thanksgiving Day. I’m giving thanks that MG was replaced by MT. I’ll eat a little extra turkey for you guys. I’ve got a 15 lb bird just waiting to get comfy on my Weber charcoal grill! Oh yeah!

    • Irish Sweetness

Chop those suckers in half and deep fry ’em for 15 minutes. Seals in the taste and the juiciness. Yum.

      • CanadaBear

Not really a fan of that. The guy that tattooed me traded me some of his mother’s fried turkey for some of my smoked turkey. It was a nice change but I much prefer grilling them.

      • Always wanted to try it that way!

        murcia!

        (c’nada?)

    • leftcoastdave

I once bagged a wild turkey in Thanksgiving day. Did just what you are doing with a variation. I found an apple tree for some branches and used them to smoke the bugger on my Weber.

The niece, of course, thought it cruel, but the one from the store was ok for her.

      • CanadaBear

Never eaten a wild turkey. Drank plenty though. One of my sisters has always hated hunting. When I was a kid my mom made pheasant and told her it was chicken. Guess who got the only piece of shot that I missed cleaning the birds? She got up from the table and ran to the bathroom. I’m not sure if she threw up or not but she was pissed at me for a long time. She wasn’t mad at our mother, just me. And she’s my favorite sister!

        • leftcoastdave

          Girls, what can you say?

That smoked wild turkey was as good as it gets. Growing up, we had turkey for every holiday meal. I can’t stand it any more. But get me a wild one to smoke and I’m all over it.

          • CanadaBear

I still have turkey quite often. We celebrate both American and Canadian Thanksgivings and I probably cook about 6 turkeys on the grill each year.

    • Turduckin?

  • Irish Sweetness

If Mitch’s first pass ….first play ….. is a TD pass … who will his best friend be?

Got me a dollar on Deonte.

Good luck Mitchell, we’ve been waiting for you for a long time. Have a feeling we’ll always be in it with you under center

  • BerwynBomber

Too bad about WY97. Always liked him. He was a good FA signing. And reportedly a good mentor to Floyd.

  • Phillip MyCrevice

JJ Watt loses his shit at presser and says he is heartbroken

    • Scharfinator

Post game or something today? It’s hard to see transcendent talent like that fall apart due to injury.

      • Sahr Gborie

we could have been saying the same thing about k.white if the injury bug did not dig into him before he ever had a chance

        • SC Dave

          UNlike. Very unlikely.

          JJ Watt is truly special.

      • The thing is Watt has been inj prone, and he knows it.

So, this offseason, from what I heard, he changed his whole work out program in order to be more durable.

Then, 4 games in, and he’s out again.

        I could see his frustration.

Watt desires to be the best ever. It’s an intense drive.

But he also recognizes his body can not withstand his will.

It’s an existential self-realization that may have finally set in. And he blew.

        I could see that.

I could also see him regrouping and training even harder to be the best again.

    • Cubsnlinux

What presser? He should be either at the hospital or on his bed no?

    • BearDown100393

      He is glue.

    • DaCoaches Mustache

I blame pussy. This guy was an unstoppable maniac before he started to get laid. Lifelong single dude until 2015. He gets a girlfriend, presumably starts getting his dick wet and boom he’s hurt 2 years in a row. Chalk up another one for the ole gashola.

  • Elect A Clown. Expect A Circus

Mike Pence attended a stunt at Colts game with Mother. bet teabaggers had a boner for pence after his stunt.

Are teabagger fans still going to watch Trub’s debut tonight?

Hope their panties are all bunched up because some NFL player exercised their right to take a knee during national anthem.

    • Phillip MyCrevice

Pence spent $200k in travel expenses to show up to a game where he knew he would storm out.

Because Trump told him to do it. The WaPo confirmed it was an order to do it from Orange 1.

  • Cubsnlinux

A little around 9 hours to Trubisky time now..

  • Sahr Gborie

There are 32 teams in the league. every team should expect to win the SB every 32 years. if you win more than 1 in the 32 years then you are excellent (giants/patriots) and if you win less then you are trash (browns). It is 2017. 32 years ago was 1985. its our time. bear down blog brothers! bear down!

How fucked up is that? Fucking cocaine! Somehow snorting a pile of that shit made making the video a good idea. Uh, not really. I’ve had a couple of friends totally ruin their lives with that shit. Really glad that stuff didn’t appeal to me.

    • Scharfinator

It’s not just them damned millenials who are stupid with their social media.

      • BearDown100393

Nobody does it better than #45.

    • It’s all part of the plan

GP, that’s not even the best report on it. Not only did he film himself blowing coke at work, he then sent the video to some Mocha Vegas Piece he was banging telling her he wanted to lick it off of her vadge who then posted it to social media to get revenge for the black man! You simply cannot make this up.

Judge for yourself about the motives of Pence, a native Hoosier, at the glorious celebration of one of the greatest athletes in the history of the state. He could have stayed away from Lucas Oil Stadium on Sunday. It’s a disgrace that Pence copied his so-called boss and hogged a spotlight he had no business even sharing, never mind owning. But that is who we elected, right?

The Vice President of the United States slapped Manning and Pence’s beloved Colts in the face. Whether he’s a puppet for the President or his own man (I think it’s the former not the latter), Pence trumped a day that belonged to the greatest football hero the state of Indiana has ever seen, and he did it for sickening political purposes. He stole Manning’s last great day as a Colt. Mike Pence will have to live with himself for that. I doubt Indiana will forget. – Peter King, SI

    • CanadaBear

Total PR set up. Really lame.

    • wreckinball

So someone “protests” by kneeling or raising a black panther power fist (a violent racist organization by the way) and the person who then counters that protest by walking out is at fault. Like a fist fight who started it?
I would prefer if politicians stay out of “this” but the vast majority of us just want “this” whatever it is to be over.

      • Phillip MyCrevice

How would you feel if Michelle Obama got up and stormed out of a Bears game, ruining the retirement of Ditka’s number?

        • wreckinball

I’d dislike it. I also wouldn’t be raising a white power fist during the anthem.

          • Sahr Gborie

it is called the sieg heil not the white power fist. sieg heil in German translates to “hail victory”. The Nazi meaning is “we will win” or “we salute the highest”.

          • wreckinball

Yes an inappropriate racist symbol. Same as the black power fist. Thanks for making that connection.

          • Sahr Gborie

the sieg heil was used by a racist and oppressive as a greeting and salute. the black power fist is used by black as a form of solidarity and form of protest against what they consider to be injustices. some very bad people have abused it. there is no denying it. where have black people used the black power fist as a way to oppress others?

          • BearDown100393

Fairly certain Central American aboriginal nations had wished they held up a fist when Columbus landed.

          • wreckinball

Yea sure. The blank panthers are all about solidarity.

You need a history lesson. A white power fist would not be the seig heil which was different. And it doesn’t exist and it won’t exist

            LOL. Adios

          • Sactowns#1

Stop feeding the idiot troll. We can all see his racism from here.

          • ah, shoulda read down.

          • a white power fist?

You mean, a nazi sieg heil?

When the Black Panthers kill over 20M, and genocide 6M jews, then maybe it will be as offensive.

        • BearDown100393

          Don’t be silly.
Mike Ditka would never allow Michelle Obama to attend his retirement ceremony game.

          • Phillip MyCrevice

            That’s true.

      • BerwynBomber

I would say that as VP (or Prez) part of the job is not being such a snowflake. You should be able to handle protest. Not run from it.

        • BearDown100393

He was just following his orders like a good puppet VP.

        • wreckinball

Well he obviously wanted to make a point just like the players are trying to make a point. If you support the “protest” whatever it is you can’t have it both ways.
I’m 1000% for just getting ALL of the political BS out of the anthem. Its meant to unify and represent the people, all of us who may actually disagree on politics, go figure, but are united as citizens.
And then just sit down, eat a dog and rink a beer and relax.
          Nope

          • BerwynBomber

So it’s a two wrongs thing for you?

I would agree about removing all politics from the anthem (even if I support the right of the players to protest). But I also don’t know if the anthem needs to be played every time a large group of Americans gather for a sporting event.

          • BearDown100393

If NFL players showed up at the WH to kneel, would #45 and VP leave?

          • BerwynBomber

Snowflakes. And Pence is a cuck. He’s just lucky Trump is not interested in his wife.

And yes, we can only wish.

          • BearDown100393

            He grabs what he wants.

          • Sahr Gborie

lol….that would be the funniest thing to see. i wish players would do that

          • genius.

          • wreckinball

Yes. But one action spawns a reaction. Disagree with them both but fail to see one action being worse then the other. Its not a good thing.
NFL has let this get out of hand. They don’t allow folks to literally do anything else aka free expression including breast cancer honoring and police officer honoring.
Nipping at the bud would have been easy. Sorry Kaep but you know we just stick to football on Sundays. Stand or stay in the locker room.
Easy, a few little yips and its over

          • BearDown100393

And until now, the NFL has not allowed free expression for social injustice. So maybe there is hope yet huh?

          • wreckinball

Well most folks want their football sans social justice. Its not relevant.

          • BearDown100393

I’m sure most folks you know feel that way.

          • wreckinball

First off you don’t know me from squat. 70-80% of the fans want “this” to go away. So most fans agree with me.

          • BearDown100393

            Sure.

          • wreckinball

So look into your crystal ball and tell who me “most folks I know are”?

          • BearDown100393

The kind who want others to conform to their mentality

          • wreckinball

LOL, so let me get this straight because I disagree with the venue for the protest I want everyone to agree with my mentality? Its not a mentality thing.
I want to see football not a political circus before every game. That’s my mentality. And as a paying customer I want the business owners to listen.

          • BearDown100393

            Yes that is your mentality.

          • Sahr Gborie

is the original action of kneeling to protest and bring attention to the unfair treatment of black by the police wrong? and if it is then what is the right way to bring attention reform to the unfair treatment of black by the police?

          • wreckinball

No except the place and venue. And also that their contention has zero basis in statistics. You know the whole “hands up don’t shoot” thing that didn’t happen. Maybe pick a different venues and maybe pick better heroes than MB.
But I got sucked into the stupid argument again. Go Bears. Hopefully that’s ALL thats on the agenda tonight.

          • BerwynBomber

I don’t think any Bears have protested. Not sure about MIN players. Anyway, I doubt it will be any story.

          • Bear Instincts

Bear down blog brother. bear down

          • Big Mike

The irony is that Pence protested with a protest. Also, taxpayers paid a ton of money for Pence to stage his protest.

          • Sactowns#1

his “point” cost taxpayers a quarter of a million dollars.

      • Sahr Gborie

“this” wont be over anytime soon. “this” is about the black players who make up 70% of the league using their platform to bring attention to what they see as the unfair treatment of black people in the united states by using their platform to peacefully protest. their intention was never to disrespect the flag or the veterans who have fought and died for the right they are exercising. the disrespect of the flag as seen by many is a byproduct of their protest but it is not the goal of the protest.

        • wreckinball

Well how is the that messaging working?
Did they get their messaging ideas from the Westboro Baptist church? They feel a certain way too.
Maybe pick a different time and place.

          • Sahr Gborie

you are absolutely right that the messaging is not working because blacks still feel that they are being treated unfairly by the police in comparison to whites. the focius of the protest is to bring attention to what black players see see as the unfair treatment of
black people by the police in comparison to whites in the united states by using their platform to peacefully
            protest

          • wreckinball

Well except that the anthem is making many folks ignore their message ala Westboro Baptists. I still don’t know what their message is because they chose a funeral for their protest.
They are doing it wrong and so are these guys.
No one is for police brutality and racism by the way. Its not controversial. Protesting during the anthem is.

      • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

No one at the game really knew he was there, and no one really noticed he left. I have several friends that were at the game, had no clue it happened until after the game.

    • BearDown100393

Lucas Oil Field cost taypayers $620 million.

Go ahead and kneel. You paid for it.

      • Sactowns#1

        Perfect!

        • willbest

Seems to me if the taxpayers want to tell the NFL players they have to stand, then that is that. I know which way Indiana is going to vote

      • And considering their tax brackets, they REALLY paid for it.

      • Cuck Cooper

In this country, is there ever “anything” that’s not paid for by the “taxpayers”?

    • BerwynBomber

Then again by all accounts Peyton is a conservative himself so he may not have cared.

    • leftcoastdave

Leadership is showing how to respond to overpaid petulant children. You want a job? Show respect for the paying customers. The left got their day in the sun with all the hollywood usual suspects sucking up. Now time to move on.

Excited, lets see what mitch can do. Would be great if he can elevate everyone around him. I love seeing a QB take whatever he has and make something out of nothing. This game will gives us a good indication of where we are headed.

    • It’s all part of the plan

I know, I love it when the play breaks down, Rodgers scrambles and then, what seems like a common occurrence, he’ll hit some white guy named Jordan or something for a touchdown or 70yd gain. He can really take chicken shit and turn it into chicken salad.

Mitch Trubisky is rad. Here’s hoping he sucks at football

  • willbest

    1) This must be the writer in you. Dudes just a prospect starting a game. Hopefully he pans out and we keep him a while. Its not any more epic than Grossman, McNown, Haurgbaugh, McMahon, etc. In order for it to be era defining, he actually has to turn into something. And then we can have all the retrospective rewrites where “looking back I knew he was going to be special”

    2) I tend to think that Young was the best pass rusher on the team. Its moot now because its Floyd and everybody else now thanks to injuries.

    3) I guess he had a broken finger, but I haven’t been impressed with him even when the ball is thrown at him. I did see him open a couple times while Glennon was checking down. I don’t know how regular that is because I don’t watch the all-22. I expect him to do better with Trubisky simply because he throws a better ball. But I am not inclined to think that he is anybody defenses really need to concern themselves with.

If I were minny I would stack 8 in the box and make Trubisky prove it before I showed the passing game any respect at all.

    • Jokey

      1) Agreed, but there is undeniable excitement with this start.

And yes, Minny should stack the box, but also blitz the crap out of a rookie QB. Fluster him, flush him, rattle him, all the above. Let’s see what happens.

      • Big Mike

still a rookie QB. I remember Urlacher, Briggs, Brown slobbering at the chance of fn with rookie QBs. Mostly it was very bad for the rookie.

        • Malice Halice

Not with Cohen Howard n shaheen as weapons tho

        • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

Matt Ryan and Tim Tebow would disagree.

          • Big Mike

That’s later years Urlacher and Briggs. I’m talking 2003-2007.

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

Ok, Joey Harrington and Marc Bulger would disagree.

    • Hicks and Goldman pressure the QB pretty well for 3-4 Linemen.

Young is down. Acho can pass rush, but he like Christian Jones and Timu, struggle big time in coverage.

I hope Fangio is prepared for lots of drag routes and such.

    • Malice Halice

All we do is put Cohen at the slot whenever thru blitz n we will have a freakin field day

    • BerwynBomber

I would argue it’s a little different because of:

      1) Trubisky was a much higher pick (#2 overall) than those you mentioned. McNown, I believe, was the second highest and he was something like #11 overall and the third QB taken in that draft

      2) Don’t know if any of those guys looked as good as Trubisky in the PS

      3) For better or worse, we’re coming off 8 or 9 years of Cutler

  • Big Mike

A hypothetical question. Would you rather have an easy win for the Bears, or a Rodgers like comeback led by Trubisky… talk amongst yourselves..

    • It’s all part of the plan

easy win, no excuses from media, run rock down throat, put Bradford out of game.

      • SC Dave

This. Domination by both lines. No turnovers. Maybe even a takeaway… not being greedy… just give me one.

      • Big Mike

A solid answer. I’ve asked every Bears fan I’ve come in contact with today (about 10). We are a shell shocked bunch. The answers ranged from “blow out please”, “easy win, no drama”, “let’s just get one, don’t need any heroes”, “the easier the better”. Only one guy wanted Trubisky to save the day in the 4th Quarter.

        • Cuck Cooper

You would make a great pollster Mike. Lol

Data needs to crunch some numbers as I’m sure the odds of a miraculous last second comeback are better than a blowout.

If the Bears win, it’s probably going to be a close game.

Once this team starts showing me that they have the ability to blow teams out, I’ll dare to go there.

    • CanadaBear

Blowout for me. The best SB in history was a blowout!

      • Big Mike

Wimps all of you. Trubisky fueled come back

    • Bear Instincts

blowout. bombs all day. every drive should be a touchdown in 4 plays.

    • I want the Bears to CRUSH them into purple powder which shall then be sold on the Chinese blackmarket as the #1 laxative ever created.

      • Big Mike

        There you go.

    • BerwynBomber

No one’s going to pick the high-wire, skin of the teeth thing that Rodgers pulled off. Who wants the stress?

    • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

Rodgers like comeback led by Trubs. Putting the team on his back and pull it out by the skin of his teeth would be EPIC!!!

      • BerwynBomber

        Ah, a first.

        • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

not really I just wanted to disagree with everyone. I will take W anyway we can get it.

      • Big Mike

        That’s what I’m saying. 🙂 Mitchgasm’s all across Beardom

      • SC Dave

No, EPIC would be doing it against Green Bay. In the NFC Championship. At Lambeau.

        • Bear Instincts

2010 revisited all over again but with a different ending

  • Malice Halice

I benched cam for Mitchell cuz I’m that CONFIDENT he will flourish. They’re defense is da same as ours but they secondary is more proven. So there’s not too much outside of practice that he won’t be used to already. I also have Cohen Howard n Barth playin tonight! BEAR DOWN!

  • This young cub does pretty well in describing key matchups and providing context to some PFF stats.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nh0DVQl-kpE&t=621s

    Few bits.

According to PFF, Callahan 78% percentile as a slot. I’m guessing this is excellent, and we’re gonna need it vs Theilan.

He’s always impressed in the nickle. His issue just has been staying on the field. I hope Fangio uses nickle more than usual because the Vikes boast the top WR tandem in Diggity and Theilan, and their star HB is down so they haven’t proven they could run yet.

I do NOT want to see Acho, Floyd or Timu trying to cover Thielan in the slot.

    – According to PFF, Leno hasn’t allowed a sack this season, and that’s with arguably the most immobile QB in the league

    – If our OGs get rolling, and we can Howard can kick it outside, he’s going to dominate. Howard runs best when he’s sliding outside, then picks a hole and steps on the gas and barrels over defenders.

This coincides wih Data’s break down about the run (Data, you have that link off hand to cite?)

  • Per tradition, the TLDR Silva Bear breakdown from rotoworld.

    Minnesota @ Chicago
Team Totals: Vikings 21.5, Bears 18.5

Mercifully scrapping the Mike Glennon experiment after four weeks, the Bears will turn to Mitchell Trubisky against a Vikings defense that has yielded one fantasy quarterback finish above QB16 despite an opening-month gauntlet of Drew Brees, Ben Roethlisberger, Jameis Winston, and Matthew Stafford. The Vikings have allowed just 2-of-20 enemy passers to reach 300 yards since the start of 2016, and Trubisky will debut with the NFL’s worst receiver corps. I’m still keeping the light on for Trubisky as an immediate two-quarterback-league play based in large part on his athleticism. He possesses plus speed (4.67), was a legitimate scrambling threat in college, and the Bears proactively put his mobility to use on boots and rollouts all preseason, where Trubisky rushed five times for 48 yards and was hyper efficient as a passer with a 67.9% completion rate, three touchdowns, and no turnovers. … As mobile quarterbacks can elevate their teams’ running games by causing hesitation and even freeze amongst front-seven defenders and/or by simply adding a new offensive dimension defenses must account for, Trubisky’s insertion bodes positively for Jordan Howard, who shook off a turbulent Weeks 1-2 to amass 20-plus touches in consecutive weeks, and now has an 11-day layoff to overcome any lingering issues from his early-season shoulder injury. The Vikings, of course, have been nails against the run, limiting enemy backs to a combined 83/269/3.24/1 rushing line and the NFL’s fifth-fewest receiving yards (110). Howard is a volume-driven, borderline RB1. … After tallying touch totals of 13 > 15 > 16 in Weeks 1-3, Tarik Cohen was surprisingly minimized in the Bears’ game plan in last Thursday night’s loss to Green Bay, managing 48 scoreless yards on a season-low ten touches and playing only 26% of the snaps. A primary reason was increased involvement for perennial troll Benny Cunningham, who returned from his high ankle sprain to nearly equal Cohen’s playing time (24%) and swipe 11 passing-down snaps.

Trubisky’s preseason touchdowns went to Cunningham, now-free agent Victor Cruz, and Bears practice-squad WR Tanner Gentry. At least among players presently on the 53-man roster, we have no tangible evidence of a “rapport” between Trubisky and any particular Bears pass catcher. … Zach Miller is my best bet for a productive Monday nighter against the Vikings, who yielded 5/54/1 to Coby Fleener in Week 1, 6/50/1 to Bears tight ends in Week 3, and 7/82/0 to Lions tight ends in Week 4. Albeit with Glennon quarterbacking, Miller ranks second on the Bears in targets (20) and first in targets inside the ten-yard line (2). … Slot men to face the Vikings in the first month were Golden Tate (3/29/0), Adam Humphries (6/68/0), Eli Rogers/JuJu Smith-Schuster (7/59/1), and Brandon Coleman/Tommylee Lewis (4/65/0). I’m approaching Kendall Wright as a low-floor, relatively low-ceiling WR4/flex option here.

The Vikings are a difficult team to analyze because we don’t know their starting quarterback. For the sake of a writeup, I’ll assume it’s Case Keenum. Even in two-QB leagues, I’m fading Keenum at Soldier Field after another brutal outing in Week 4. … Latavius Murray was the Vikings’ lead back following Dalvin Cook’s ACL tear, logging 19 snaps post-Cook injury to Jerick McKinnon’s six and nine touches to McKinnon’s two. This is a wait-and-see week for Minnesota’s backfield. Chicago has played lights-out run defense, limiting enemy backs to a 90/325/3.61/4 rushing line and the NFL’s fourth-fewest receiving yards (96). … Keenum’s Weeks 2-4 target distribution: Stefon Diggs 24; Adam Thielen 22; Kyle Rudolph 12; Jerick McKinnon 9; Jarius Wright 5; Murray 2. … The good news for Diggs is Chicago has been shredded by No. 1 WRs in three straight games, namely Antonio Brown (10/110/1), Mike Evans (7/93/1), and Jordy Nelson (4/75/2). The bad news is Diggs’ quarterback is Keenum, who completed two passes for 27 yards to Diggs the last time they played together in a road game. Diggs is best viewed as a volatile WR2/3. … Same goes for slot man Thielen, whose floor does look higher than Diggs’ with five catches in all three of Keenum’s starts. … Rudolph has dudded each game this season to the extent that he simply can’t be trusted until he puts something into a box score. I do think there’s a chance Cook’s injury could benefit Rudolph if the Vikings’ run games goes in the gutter and OC Pat Shurmur becomes compelled to have Rudolph block less and run short, higher-percentage routes more.

Score Prediction: Bears 21, Vikings 20

    • Sactowns#1

Who is starting tonight? Do we know?

      • Cubsnlinux

        Bradford

        • Sactowns#1

With zero practices under his belt? hmmm

        • Is it official?

Bradford’s been trending to start, but how well he does is another matter.

I think one good hit to china doll will sideline him.

          • Cubsnlinux

all signs point to Bradford starting. Zimmer seems to have alluded so himself to a radio outlet. Bradford also participated in all practices leading up

    • WP4Life

      Thanks for sharing info.

  • Butch’s breakdown.

It’s like a 2nd Man-Xmas! This must be what Hanukkah feels like!

When I began reviewing college tape in March b4 the draft, Trub jumped off the screen. For various reasons I will not rehash, but he looked by far the most NFL (not NFL ready) his arm, legs and throws were NFL material.

Well, watching that Stanford etc tape seems like an eternity ago.

And I can’t wait to see Trub goes balls deep.

As my avi shows, This whole Trubisky Biz is RISKY.

Gotta give Pace credit. He had MAJOR cajones to trade up and nab his man. Chicago fans booed him like Philly booed McNabb. Shit, even at a godamn Bull’s game.

But as the plot of the movie showed, sometimes to be great, risk is needed. Pace is no Grinder eking out a living to pay rent. He doubled down on KGB going for glory. And if Pace loses, it’s over for him.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WtYbZbdIIcI

This should be a fun ride filled with bumps and bruises, and hopefully like in Risky Biz, turns up aces with naked chicks giving repressed suburbanites a bear boner.

    Bear down!

  • DBears

Watch how this offense comes alive tonight. These guys knew Glennon was a joke and they played like it

  • Getting an entire day to bask in the glory of the redzone channel, and watching some good games, I hope Birdcage was paying attention.

I saw a lot of creative plays run by Dak, Watson, Alex Smith, Cam that we can now also use.

Some plays we can now use with Trub.

    – The jet sweep.

The trick to this is rostering a dangerous speed demon. The chiefs did this last night with 28mph Hill streaking across. This forces the Ds to not crash the box, which should open up more holes for Howard.

Hunt gained 10 yds off this play. Then, later in the drive, the LB crashed on Hunt, but guess what? They gave it to the jet sweeper and he walked in free for a TD.

The jet sweep with Cohen could likewise confuse a D (there’s also the third option of Trub keeping it and running himself

    – The read option.

I think we all know what this is, but I would reserve it for important downs. Like 3rd and redzone. That way it limits the hit Trub may take.

    – Bootleg/pa

Obviously couldn’t do this with Glennon.

The biggest benefit from the bootleg is that the defense can’t just swarm to one side.
They must now respect the backside contain with Trub’s speed, which should make all Ds less aggressive in attacking the LOS to one side.

    – QB draws.

Likely Birdcage will use a lot of shotgun to make Trub comfortable.

The QB draw can be a potent weapon, esp if the DEs are looping around.

A few QB draws and those DEs will be thinking twice.

    – QB sneaks.

Trub is not a small guy, and unlike Glennon, he’s athletic.
3rd and inches he can just ride Whitehair’s ass.

I always felt the OCs were hesistant to do the QB sneak with Cutler because he was a bit fragile and concussion/TO prone.

I think we’ll see much more sneaks with Trub, hopefully on quick counts that catch the D with their pant’s down.

    – Deep balls!

We now have a QB who is willing and able. All Trub has to do is hit maybe two a game, and those S will vacate the box

Anyways, literally the ENTIRE playbook is now available to Birdcage.

Hopefully he doesn’t just do 3 yds and a cloud of dust. He can now be creative and aggressive without limitations. No excuses.

    • CanadaBear

My only quibble is MT won’t know the entire playbook (not that Glennon did). And I’m more than a little concerned about sneaks and KO’s. Not sure if there is an issue there or not. Just seems like an accident waiting to happen. Anyway, pumped about the game tonight!

      • BearDown100393

His first play call will be hard count.

    • Phillip MyCrevice

Romo said that Birdcage was using the Falcons playbook but had to omit all the boot and PA-roll plays because Mikey was a statue.

I expect to see a lot of bootleggin and PA rollouts to shorten up the field and drag routes for Tr00b to hit on crossers.

  • Scharfinator

My biggest worry are all those high and off center snaps that MG was getting continue for MT…

    • SC Dave

      Good point.

    • Bear Instincts

the line is starting to settle down. the Sky King is here. he will bring calm and order to the o-line.

    • Big Mike

High snaps are bad. The worst ones are low and at the left leg of a right handed QB. Even worse if your quarterback is 7 feet tall and not athletic. Mitch will don his superman cape, track down any errant snap and run for 5 yards.

  • BerwynBomber

Local Jewel seemed extra-crowded at lunch. Cubs’n’Trubs night. And Columbus Day for the kids and govt. and bank employees.

  • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

So it looks like Bradford starting tonight, another note is Michael Floyd will be back after a 4 game suspension, just another WR weapon to go with Theilen and Diggs.

  • DaCoaches Mustache

Is anyone else on here genuinely nervous for tonight? Fatalistic bears fan syndrome i suppose, but I just can’t help but think he’s either going to break his leg or just straight up suck, henry burris style. I have fucking butterflies in my stomach. And a raging hard on…

    • CanadaBear

I don’t think he’s going to suck esp at the Happy Hank level. I’m worried about getting injured/KO’d. Other than that, I’m stoked to see him tonight and get a glimpse to see if the offense can move the ball with the ragtag bunch of WR’s. Probably see lots of RB’s and TE’s getting the short passes. Hope he hits one or two over the top.

    • Think of it this way.

Can it possibly be worse than Glennon, Cutler, Barkley, Hanie, Clausen?

      Nowhere to go but up.

      Bear up!

      • willbest

jfc, where is hoyer. Its like you want me to reach through the internet and strangle you.

        • Hoyer threw for 350 yds yesterday, including a late 2 min drive to score a TD to get it to over time.

Hoyer’s stats on the Bears were arguably the best in such a short time, and it’s important to remember he did so with limited reps under the first yr in the system.

          #daDestroyer.

          • willbest

Glennon has pissed away fewer games as a Bear than Hoyer #truefact

      • Big Mike

Exactly, whatever happens tonight is better than what would have happened with Glennon. No miracles just a significant improvement at the most important position on the field. Trubisky will protect the ball, make a few plays and energize the defense. Perhaps most importantly the Bears will have a real home field advantage. The crowd should be insane.

    • SC Dave

      Just run the damn ball.

    • BearDown100393

      No

    • Big Mike

Not worried about him sucking. Worried about rest of bears sucking around him.
