“This Won’t Happen Again”: Pace & Fox Address Media

| January 4th, 2017

Ryan Pace and John Fox addressed the media today. The following are my thoughts:

  • Both Pace and Fox set the perfect tone for a 3-13 press conference. They acknowledged the injuries but made clear the results of the season were unacceptable.
  • Pace sure sounded like a GM zeroing on the quarterback position this offseason. Made very clear that his decisions at that position this offseason will greatly impact the future of the organization. As Pace said, “Everything is on the table”.
  • Bears only have 19 players on the roster from previous regime. That’s kind of amazing.
  • Alshon Jeffery discussion was tepid. Pace did not sound like a GM willing to commit major resources to a player whose production – though excusable – has plummeted.
  • “Ball security is critical” -John Fox. It was obvious from the head coach’s comments that he does not want a QB who throws the ball to the other team.
  • Pace was on the money with his evaluation of the Bears secondary. They need to add playmakers with better ball skills.
  • Pace is “not giving up on Kyle Fuller”. His commentary on Fuller was some of his most passionate. Fuller will be given every opportunity to compete for this team in 2017.
  • Fox’s way of saying injuries cracked me up: “consistency of games available”.
  • Pace believes Jonathan Bullard needed this year to learn to play defense a different way. He expects a leap next year.
  • Both coordinators are staying.

I really like Ryan Pace. But this is a massive offseason for the young GM.

First to say ….. No_Balls gets canned ?

If we’re building a championship defense …. it will need teeth. Teeth and balls.
I hope they announce that Cutty is the man for 2017 too. Don’t dance around it. Let him know he’s the man.

    • Big Mike

Fangio is the best DC we’ve had since Ron Rivera.

      • MB30SD

Shhhhhh, he cray. Just back up slowly whispering, ‘fails for HOF’ over and over

        • Big Mike

Does Irish just like to blitz on every down?

          Get Outlook for iOS

          • MB30SD

Yes, that’s all that matters… Even with the garbage we trotted out as an NFL secondary.

            Get Android cause iOS blows

          • Big Mike

It’s funny I’m a PC user hardcore.  But about ten years ago I got an iPod.    Spent a bunch of time and money curating my music.  Ripped a ton of my cds, tagged them etc.  kids wanted iPhones.  The daughter was a creative and wanted a MacBook.  Before you know it I was supporting 10 Mac products.   So I caved and got an iPhone.  iOS for mobile devices is simply easier to use.

          • MB30SD

            I have an iPad… I fucking HAAAAATES it… Precious.

It’s the worst possible to use in a business environment eveah. I literally gave up. Didn’t have the patience, all if does now is stream my music to my Sonos system and keep my kids entertained 15 minutes a weekend with games.

            Fucking piece of shit.

          • Big Mike

Yeah, I hear you on the iPad thing. Mine is for watching movies, browsing etc. I have a PC desktop and laptop for business. Fucking mac’s without a right click button drives me insane.

          • MB30SD

I have the MSFT surface Pro 4. bad ass. I need fucking multitasking windows man. How in thee fuck do you have an OS without them?!?

ridiculous. great for designers, dogshit for biz efficiency/productivity.

          • Huge Bears Penis

I bought all my neice and nephews 8 in. Tablets running Win10 for christmas, works great just browsing internet. Microsoft had them on sale for 70% off and I had a 40% coupon from Microsoft so i got them for $40 a peice.

          • Irish Sweetness

Once more MB, and you having played safety (as did I) should know that blitzing/pressure aids the secondary. When your secondary is shit, you can’t rely on a 3 man rush, because the coverage is shit.. This is basics.

          • Irish Sweetness

The league average would be nice.

          • Big Mike

            Why?

      • SC Dave

        Probably better than Rivera, TBH.

        • Big Mike

More with less, but in the vicinity. Bears finished 15th in yardage allowed, with the JV defense.

          • SC Dave (I want new coords!)

Precisely, to say nothing of the fact that Chico was hopelessly out-planned and out-adjusted in Super Bowl XLI.

      • Irish Sweetness

        Pfhhfttt!!

      • Irish Sweetness

Definitely a matter of opinion Mike. Can’t see what that’s based on, at all.
Defense is about creating pressure. If Fangio doesn’t get that, what’s he getting paid millions of dollars for?

        • CanadaBear

Defense is about holding the team down to fewer point that you score.

          • Irish Sweetness

Usually by applying pressure and kicking the shit out of them.

Again, name me a great defense that wasn’t aggressive.

          • CanadaBear

Name me a great defense that didn’t have great players.

          • Huge Bears Penis

72 Dolphins had the ‘No-Name Defense’ so they must have sucked

          • Irish Sweetness

Were they aggressive? I don’t know. I doubt they were pussies who sat back and did nothing.

          • Irish Sweetness

            Answering a question with a question, C-BEar

Name me a great defense that wasn’t aggressive.

          • willbest

The 9ers defense under Harbaugh and Vic. It looked aggressive because they had great players that could regularly beat their man, but it wasn’t aggressive.

          • CanadaBear

            Lovie’s

        • Big Mike

Fangio ran one of the top 5 defenses of the last 15 years in SF. My recollection is that he didn’t blitz a lot but was very effective when he did. You do what you can, with what you have. Maybe the Bears could have blitzed more. There’s no set formula. Situational football dictates as much as scheme and personnel. “More Blitzing” wouldn’t have cured the Bears problems. In hindsight, there are situations where I’m sure Fangio probably thinks he should have blitzed, or called a different coverage. That’s the chess game of football. See Pete Carroll and losing the superbowl by passing on 3rd and short, with Lynch in the backfield.

    • CanadaBear

Man let’s go to the SB. First they shit can Fangio and they get a DC that has no other options because who else is going to take that job when Fox has one foot in the grave and another on a banana peel. Next we get behind that fabulous QB Jay Christopher Cutler because, let’s face it, he’s awesome. What could go wrong? I love ya like a brother Irish but if you actually won billions and bought the Bears I’m afraid they would be worse, if that’s possible.

      • Irish Sweetness

Nobody in America is going to take a job as DC in Chicago?

With that secondary, he should have been blitzing MORE than the league average.

        • CanadaBear

You and I see things differently.

        • willbest

You realize Rodger’s passer rating goes up against the blitz. That is why people don’t do it against him. And not just Vic.

      • MB30SD

        Jep

  • Viva

    Dave Toub for HC.

    • Irish Sweetness

      Man, where you been?!

    • MB30SD

      Ooh raaah!

  • Big Mike

BTW, Bears staff set to coach the Senior Bowl. I don’t know how that can hurt.

    • MB30SD

Is it always the two worst teams in the NFL?? Why in thee fuck would they do that?!?

      • Big Mike

Worst 2, but LA has a new coaching staff and I don’t know if they could opt out or were not eligible.
I love that the Bears get this opportunity.  Can only inform them about the draft class.

        • MB30SD

Agree, just feel sorry for the kids. They must be going… We worked our asses off to be the best and THIS is our reward?!? Hahaha

          • Big Mike

            We have good coaches.

            Get Outlook for iOS

          • MB30SD

Good coaches don’t go 3-13, I don’t care how many guys are on IR.

            That’s just a simple fact.

          • Big Mike

You’re wrong.   Been coaching 20 years.  For the first 10 years I got significantly better each year.  Then a little bit better for about 5 years and now just tying to keep up.  I’ve gone 0-10 and 10-0. One year to the next.
            Get Outlook for iOS

          • MB30SD

No offense Mike, I’m sure you’re a badass, but this ain’t HS.

These guys get paid huge money to deliver results. HUUUGE money… Some of them millions of dollars.

Fucking deliver even a competent product erra single year or gtfo of my organization. Fox has had plenty of time to just shot improvement and he’s done the opposite.

Sure, I’ll give him a mully this year, but I hope you and beat national isn’t expecting anything better than 8-8 next year.

I go 8-8 in my job or worse three years in a row and I’m shit canned… Shit I doubt I make it into my second year with that record… And I assure you I’m not being paid millions (yet)

          • BearDown100393

            16-0

          • willbest

Really? So you are saying that you should be able to bring up a minor league baseball team and still win 40 games?

Look, outside of porter our entire DB core is making league min. The Bears are not allowed to pay them less. And that is my point about min. wage a week or so ago. At some point, you are paying a person more money than the services they are capable of providing. None of those guys can provide pro-level DB play on a consistent basis. And your course of action is to blame the coaches for not being able to train up players that would have a hard time making it in the CFL to the NFL level. Unreal.

          • Big Mike

I’m a very good coach at the level I’m at. I develop players well, try to teach life lessons all the good shit that comes with playing football

The NFL coaches are amazing. Having been in clinics that they teach, they just see things 3-4x faster, they know 10x more about everything. Feet, hands, hips, head, schemes, personnel, strategy. They are passionate about football and its details. The ones I’ve had the chance to listen to, they are amazing teachers.

Fox is not a bad coach. He’s won too many games in the NFL to be called a bad coach. The question is this. Is he the right coach for the Bears. I don’t know who else has rebuilt two franchises the way he did. Maybe when the Bears are closer to getting to the mountain, he’s not the right guy. (the best analogy I have is from Basketball, Doug Collins was never going to get a ring with the Bulls. Phil Jackson got 6. But Phil Jackson was never going to take the teams Collins had and move them along the way Collins did).

Belichik couldn’t have gotten 2 more wins out of this group. If Belichik took over the team at the same time Fox did, yeah ok, different ball game. Belichik is a HOF coach. Fox isn’t. But he’s a good HC.

That’s all the Mully for the year. Next year I think we’re in the 9-10 win range and if he doesn’t get 8, yeah he’s probably toast and probably should be.

          • Huge Bears Penis

I disagree on Belichick. He would have bribed Refs, hacked the scoreboard, found compromising pictures of opposing teams QBs and blackmailed them into throwing interceptions. We would have had 10+ wins.

          • Big Mike

            🙂

          • MB30SD

I was one of fox’s biggest fans. My thing with him is that he WAS a good coach. After the heart attack, he just had to stop giving a shit as much. doc’s orders.

            He’s sleeping… besides his shitty in-game coaching.

          • Big Mike

You love the fire and brimstone don’t you. It’s mostly show is what I think. In game coaching for every coach can be questioned.

          • Irish Sweetness

Are you an NFL coach, Mike? No offense.

          • Big Mike

Man, I wish I was that good. I’ve been to more than a few coaching clinics. Occasionally, there are NFL position coaches, coordinators and even a head coach. These guys are amazing. In one session we were being taught how to break down the All 22 view. We each had a shot at dissecting a play with a set of requirements like break down the blocking scheme, or identify the pre -snap read and coverage. So all of the attendees did their thing and it took us a few minutes for each play. The NFL guys are laughing at how slow and wrong we were. We then picked out a play at random from a game they weren’t involved in, they diagnosed it, tagged it and had insight on personnel within 5 seconds.

But regarding Fox being a bad coach because he went 3-13, I call BS. To win at the NFL level like he has tosses out forever that he is a bad coach. Now there could be issues about how well he fits the situation. He checks that box, because he’s rebuilt two teams. Had the Bears had average health, not been playing their 4th string QB and a quartet of washed up, never were or not ready DBs, the Bears would have been in the 8-9 win range territory and we would be mildly content with the progress.

I just don’t get the Fox is a bad coach opinion. Fangio either. The OC, well he might not have been as ready as you’d like. But again, he’s working with his 4th string QB and receivers who couldn’t catch. Maybe he’s better next year.

          • But they played hard, MB!

Didn’t u get the memo from “Ted Phillips Biannual Synergy Conference” pamphlet?

Look at all those UFAs, how they laid their bodies on the line in the last 3 weeks, almost as if they didn’t want to work at PetCo or something

            #CondorSwoops

          • Irish Sweetness

            This.
That secondary coach … I don’t know what he does when he’s supposed to be at work. Football isn’t hard … unless Fangio is making it hard for them.

          • SC Dave

This is stupid on so many levels I don’t even know how to respond. Were NFL football easy, ANYONE could do it. And clearly, there are but two or three that can win consistently.

And you post this right after asking Mike whether he is an NFL coach? What the fuck, dude?

        • CanadaBear

          Pretty sure you mean SF.

          • Big Mike

            I did.

this one is better, complete with dramatic music

        • SC Dave

          Two things.

          1) A highlight reel that has actual good plays and many. Not just the same five plays from six angles each.

          2) For the outset, it became clear that this kid *sees* everything. He’s like Howard, only on defense. Me likey, big time.

          • Bender McLugh

jeesh, I’ll try better next time Dad.

          • SC Dave

            Bender,

My point (1) was to say that you found a highlight film with many good plays, not one in which the same five plays are shown six times each. Obviously, I could have stated that more clearly, as it was meant to be a compliment on your choice of film.

          • Bender McLugh

I thought you meant the first vid, all good homey

  • Bender McLugh

Hooker will most likely be there at 3. Pull the trigger or trade back?

    • Bender McLugh

trade back a few spots and snag Adams instead…
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yW21xmW9-oc

      • MB30SD

Hooker by all accounts so far is the second coming of Mike Brown for us… And we all know he didn’t have any impact on our D.

Baring any changes till our pick, if Allen and Garrett are gone and we don’t run up to pick this kid and get some unheard of from Fucking Wyoming north east coast central state for blind nuns, I will go Fucking ballistic

        • Bender McLugh

haha yeah I don’t see that happening this draft unless there’s a trade back. Hooker looks legit

          • MB30SD

I don’t discount anything anymore my maings. Seems Fucking simple right? Logical almost. If he blows up the senior bowl (if he’s going) and the combine… Would be crazy not to take him @ 3.

Shit if he proves to be and even further enforces that he’s the real deal all the way to our pick… I’d pass up Fucking Allen to get him. We have dline guys already… We gots literally ZERO in our dbackfield.

In fact, I might even pass up berry to get this kid and instead pick up will hill for a bag o chips to play SS opposite the rook.

How’s dem apples!? Think I just established my 2017 draft platform and bandwagon

          • Bender McLugh

completely agreed, hard to argue against

          • Irish Sweetness

            And your QB ??

          • Bender McLugh

            get one next year

          • SC Dave

            This.

          • Irish Sweetness

Say Cutty does well this year, no injuries. You won’t be drafting high enough to get Lamar Jackson or whoever.

          • CanadaBear

That will happen right after Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny bring unicorns and rainbows to Soldier Field.

          • Irish Sweetness

2015? What was wrong with him then? 92 rated. no multiple ints in 15 straight games.

2016, he was injured and played shit in two games.

What are we basing the pessimism on? What he was like BEFORE then? Doesn’t compute.

          • willbest

That he is 33 and has broken his throwing hand twice, and now his throwing Shoulder. Look, he is better than a most our other options, but you can’t trust him to stay healthy even if you get him a firm hand at OC that knows how to limit his downside.

          • Irish Sweetness

That’s a fair point actually. We don’t know what the extent of the shoulder/thumb injuries are. Pace might cash him in while he’s maybe worth something.

          • DaCoaches Mustache

How about every fucking year the guys has played ever? He’s not the answer Irish. Not for the Bear, probably not for any team in this NFL.

          • Irish Sweetness

2015 … what was wrong with his play? It was his career year to date.

2016, he fucking picked apart one of the top defenses at the time. Then he injured his shoulder .. .thumb .. but the haters gonna hate … and ignore logic ‘n stuff.

          • CanadaBear

It was his career year and it was the NFL avg. We aren’t hating. He is mediocre at best. Apparently 8 years of mediocrity is not enough for you.

          • willbest

2008 was his career year. 2011 and 2013 were pretty good too. He wasn’t horrible in 2010 and Martz was trying to get him killed that year (and eventually did). But his 2014 was bad and his 2016 he was injured to worthless. So in the last 2 of 3 “what have you done for me lately” analysis its not good.

          • CanadaBear

Correction, his career year with the Bears.

          • BerwynBomber

Would you stop with the “no multiple INTs in 15 straight games”? You do realize that is a Cutty only stat used to desperately pimp him, right? And again, 92 PR was only good for the 16th best in the league.

          • MB30SD

            Exactly

          • BearDown100393

Jay Cutler is great every season.

          • Irish Sweetness

            I like your positivity BD.

          • MB30SD

Never happened. He’s older and more hurt… There’s no such thing as a time machine in the nfl

          • MB30SD

Next year, don’t care this year. There’s no diff to be between 7-9 or 8-8

          • SC Dave

Hug that dream, compadre! I mean, it’s a damn good one.

        • SC Dave

Mike Brown had Brian Urlacher in front of him.

          • MB30SD

True, so never mind. Let’s just leave the dbackfield barren for another decade. Seems sound.

            Dave Dave Dave. : /

          • SC Dave

The point is that while Mike Brown was definitely an opportunist and our best safety since Fencik, having an Urlacher in front of him allowed many more chances to be taken than could be right now.

Two or three threads ago I said I’d be fine with a great safety. That or another pass rusher.

          • MB30SD

I get it… Freeman and Tre if he comes back gives us enough up there to warrant a safety this high for once

          • Irish Sweetness

So we draft a stud safety – I’m down with that bigtime – but who’s under Center?

Cutty. You ain’t down with Cutty, or are you a secret lover?

          • Irish Sweetness

            And Tommie.

All comes down tot he pass rush. We improve that, our DBs automatically look better.

        • Irish Sweetness

          Leaning towards this too.

Of course that means not drafting a QB, MB. That means Cutty. Mmkay?

Fuck the guy in the 4th round. That shit don’t fly.

          • MB30SD

            Read my lips Irish…

            HOYER THE DESTROYER IN 2017!!!

          • willbest

Why would anybody advocate for the Bears to give up in 2017 before the season even started?

        • Johnnywad

Nah. Pace doesn’t play that. In two drafts he’s only picked three players from “small” schools and they were all late rounders like Braverman.

          • willbest

I would gamble on a small school QB starting around 15-20. Not at #3, and that kid only has 1 year at a small school, so I probably wouldn’t even take him until late 2nd

          • MB30SD

            Exactly.

          • MB30SD

            Sigh

    • BearDown100393
    • SC Dave

A nine-play highlight reel. Nine plays in how many seasons?

Other than his obvious skill at returning INTs, so what?

      • Bender McLugh

yeah thought it was a different vid, my bad, piss & cheerios & all that

    • Irish Sweetness

We have to trade back if someone offers us those picks. No player would be worth giving up those picks …. we can draft the QB next year. Good ones coming I hear.

      • willbest

No player is worth those picks? None? Not even a future HoF 3 time all-pro, 8 pro-bowl player?

        • Irish Sweetness

So who’s putting college players in the HoF now? That’s an unverifiable valuation.

        • MB30SD

Again, when are you going to let me borrow your Chrystal Ball of yours?!

          • willbest

So lets go to 2012, and you have #1, and are about to draft Andrew Luck. You taking the skins deal where you get 3 first rounders, a 3rd, and 5th to move back 4 spots?

Or what about this year. Say Kizer and Watson go #1 & 2. You have your choice of Allen or Garrett. You trading back 4 spots to pick up a first next year and a 2nd this year?

          • MB30SD

            Probably

  • Magical announcement. Bears Consortium, lead by Teddy Ballgame Phillips, gives the future a thumbs up.

Right next to the Jar Jar binks and Ewok Museum on Lake Shore.

When asked about winning, Teddy replied,

    “Dooooooon’t carrreee”

    • MB30SD

      “winning”

  • Theodore Phillips Anus (GP)

Pace to can Birdcage at 11

    Replace with Mike McCoy

    • SC Dave

That would be a shame, IMO.

      • MB30SD

        big-time upgrade.

McCoy is way too much of a pussy to be a good HC, but he’s a VERY good OC.

        Instant big-time upgrade.

When will mediocre not be enough for you Dave. Let’s push for more shall we?

        • SC Dave

Your presumption is that a different OC will be better. The legacy of the past 45 years of Bears football does not support that point-of-view.

In fact, the typical case is that it gets worse.

          • MB30SD

Have we ever really had one of those?

Would be interesting to see what a bonnafide OC would do don’t you think? I’d be interested even more to see what he’d do without a real franchise. If he does a decent job with the likes of Hoyer and barkley… We know he’s the real deal

          • SC Dave

I guess that’s where we disagree. Hoyer and Barkley both did better than they ever have in their careers under Loggains. By a lot. And that with ostly reserves, although Meredith definitely stepped up and Barkley did have full benefit of Howard.

The biggest thing that disturbs me, however, is that it took until game 5 or 6 to realize that Howard was the go-to guy. Of course, that may well have been Fox and/or Pace, since they had to “justify” dumping the best offensive player on the team in favor of a schlub and a JAG at the RB position. Hence, they stuck too long with the wrong guy.

          • Irish Sweetness

I think that might be why they fired the RB coach …

          • willbest

He didn’t get fired, he quit.

          • Make RedZone Conv% Great Again

why do you keep saying that Barkley did better than he’s ever have? He was given his first bonified chance and the magnitude of shittiness was impressive. He has no history to base that comment off of.
They were racked with injuries this year but still couldn’t find consistent ways to get their best playmaker the ball which would have moved more chain and resulted in more TD’s and possibly some wins.
They failed to call common sense short yardage plays with their fullback and/or Unrein and it cost them at least a few wins especially against GB.
They kept putting Paulsen in situations where he’d fail over and over and instead of deviating from those sub packages they kept calling them which killed multiple drives this year and cost chain movement and scoring opportunities.
I just don’t see where the love comes from.

          • Irish Sweetness

If he does a decent job with the likes of Hoyer and Barkley …then his first name is Jesus and his last name is Christ because you’d need to be able to turn water into wine. Or in that case … piss into wine.

Sorry, that was dude in the New Testament. He was kosher, too.

          • MB30SD

            You’re right.

            also… BRING IN FAILS!!!

          • Irish Sweetness

            He gone.

My roster is Cutty and Shaw. Which funnily enough .. is the roster.

          • Irish Sweetness

Yeah, I could give a fuck who the OC is. You have a well-oiled offense and it doesn’t matter. Execution is everything.

          • CanadaBear

            REALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

          • MB30SD

            I know right… I give up

          • Irish Sweetness

            Promise?

          • MB30SD

            I’ll try

          • Irish Sweetness

Yes, it’s as obvious as a great defense requiring aggression, not passivity. Of course you need great players, but apply pressure with decent players and bad things happen to offenses. Stand back and let Aaron Rodgers pick you apart when your secondary is a joke … sorry, but you need to lose your job.

          • CanadaBear

You said you didn’t care who the OC was. To me, that’s just stupid.

          • MB30SD

            Cray… Not Stoopid

          • CanadaBear

No, that one was just stupid. Irish certainly isn’t stupid but that comment was.

          • MB30SD

I was trying to be nice.

          • MB30SD

            Sigh

    • I think only you have the more offensive avi than I.

      I salute u, sir.

      • SC Dave

        What about a Trestman avi?

        • CanadaBear

          You win!!!!!!!!!!!!!

        • BearDown100393

          Without the hat.

    • BearDown100393

      #BirdCage “going to college” also?

      • CanadaBear

Drayton is the associate HC at Texas. Pretty sure that job will pay at least as much as his job with the Beloved.

        • BearDown100393

Fox: Hey guy, I didn’t fire you. You are just going to do your job at some school instead of here. Okay?

          • CanadaBear

I hear ya but it makes no sense on the surface to fire the guy. Plus win-win for Drayton.

  • CanadaBear

    If Pace was given truth serum before the presser;

“Good morning, thanks for coming. To start off, Foxy is coming back because Ginny doesn’t want to pay two coaches for 4 years in a row. Teddy is in the office polishing McCaskey knobs as we speak. We’re hoping next year to have some luck on the injury front and Kevin White comes back 100%. Because of that we aren’t signing Alshon. Actually I just like stock piling cash. We finally decided to release Cutler because we don’t owe that schlub any more money. We are going to pick a QB early in the draft because realistically it’s the only way I can stick around for a few more years. Have a good day!”

    • Wouldn’t it be refreshing though?
This is how democracies accept dictators.

      • Sauron’s right eyeball

Hmm…tell me more. Is your definition of a democracy the authorized version?

Did you see what I did there?

    • MB30SD

Out of all the total garbage pails in the bears office… Pace would be the only one I’d keep
Everyone else including the McCaskeys…. OFF WITH THEIR HEADS!!!

      • CanadaBear

Nobody needs to die, just replaced. It’s too bad the Ricketts bought the Cubs instead of the Bears (and I’m a huge Cubs fan).

        • SC Dave

          The Bears ain’t for sale.

          • MB30SD

            Sadly

          • CanadaBear

            No doubt.

          • BearDown100393

Make her an offer she can’t refuse.

        • BearDown100393

Too bad Theo and Jed got into baseball instead of football.

        • Make RedZone Conv% Great Again

You have to remember why the Ricketts initially bought the Cubs. Tom convinced his father it was a no lose prop of an investment because the fans would keep coming no matter how bad the team was.
The light clicked on when the team sucked and people STOPPED showing up and STOPPED buying beers and other vendor items. The cash flow plummeted and they changed course because they are smart businessmen.

          • CanadaBear

Not really. They hired Theo & Co. immediately, they tanked 3 seasons for draft picks, made great choices, great signings, one of the best mgrs in baseball became available and it all came together.

    • BearDown100393

You left out the bit when he informs ticket prices are going up.

    • Irish Sweetness

Actually that would be Ted Philips not wanting to pay two coach’s salaries. It’s a relevant point. It’s always been about the bottom line with the family.

      • CanadaBear

Pretty sure Ginny has more say than Sweaty Teddy and it is her money.

      • Johnnywad

        Well. It is a business.

That said, winning a Super Bowl would surely cover an extra coaching salary or two once the dust settles.

        • BearDown100393

Take the difference out of the rings.

    • Theodore Phillips Anus (GP)

The press are pissed because Foxy is going to sit at the table next to Pace.

Pace refuses to make himself available to the press w/o the coaching staff also there – which apparently is a severe break with protocol.

makes asking the coach firing questions awkward – which is what Pace wants

I hope the press says “fuck that” and get bigtime surly with him

      • BearDown100393

Press: Is this a make or break season for John Fox as head coach?

        Pace {turns head to face Fox}

        Fox {shrugs}

        • SC Dave

          Looks about right.

        • Scharfinator

          Lol! Love it

      • willbest

Why? Pace didn’t hire Fox to begin with George did.

      • Irish Sweetness

        • MB30SD

          Hahaha, and if they don’t

        • CanadaBear

And if they don’t will you shut up about it?

      • BerwynBomber

The press is also pissed because Fox gives his Belichick-as-nice-guy impression all year and therefore they glean very little from him. Hence, his own pressers are redundant. Let alone appearing at Pace’s year-end.

in response to the coaches (Loggains included) performing to the best of their offensive capabilities:

why do you keep saying that Barkley did better than he’s ever have? He was given his first bonified chance and the magnitude of shittiness was impressive. He has no history to base that comment off of.
They were racked with injuries this year but still couldn’t find consistent ways to get their best playmaker the ball which would have moved more chain and resulted in more TD’s and possibly some wins.

They kept putting Paulsen in situations where he’d fail over and over and instead of deviating from those sub packages they kept calling them which killed multiple drives this year and cost chain movement and scoring opportunities.
They scrapped the dual running back backfield sub package which was an incredibly successful package when it was just Carey and Langford. Imagine if they just tweaked it and used Carey/Howard. Insanity that they didn’t run it at all. It’s like they didn’t want to convert short yardage and red zone opty’s.
I just don’t see where the love comes from.

    • SC Dave (I demand a new OC!)

      I want a new OC!

      • You also wanted to hold onto Forte.

Admittedly a good position 4-5 years ago. Coming into this season, however…

        • SC Dave (I demand a new OC!)

Forte would have been far better than Langford or Carey, beyond question.

Fortunately, we got lucky with Howard.

          • Howard may not have been Howard if we still had Forte.

            Addition by subtraction.

          • SC Dave (I demand a new OC!)

I’m happy to grant you that first sentence, since we probably would have had the same problem had Langford not been injured.

Edit: And yeah, we probably would have had to wait until next year for Howard to blossom.

        • Huge Bears Penis

          and Gould.

      • Make RedZone Conv% Great Again

I don’t see the blind love that’s all Dave, you can spout your tag line all you want.
They didn’t use Howard until the 4th or 5th game. Fail.
They didn’t use Alshon like a #1. Fail.
They didn’t execute tried and true short yardage packages. Fail.
They kept running ineffective and plain defective sub packages. Fail.
It cost us conversions and points and most likely wins. If you’re ok with it then that flies in the face of common sense a bit.

        • SC Dave (I demand a new OC!)

          Careful what you ask for.

        • Sauron’s right eyeball

It’s almost as if they weren’t trying to win football games this year. Hmmm……

        • CanadaBear

I’d prefer to keep Nathan Lane if they don’t go after McCoy.

    • BerwynBomber

I’d argue that Fox and Loggains are somewhat the beneficiaries of what I would call the “Cutler Rationale”, which is the overvaluing of someone somewhat because his predecessors were so bad. In Fox’s case, it’s Trestman. In Loggains case, it’s guys like Shoop and Tice. (And in Cutty’s case, it was a litany of QBs too numerous to mention.)

      • SC Dave (I demand a new OC!)

But my offense was exciting in 2013!

  • SC Dave (I demand a new OC!)

      Amos to STs.

    • Scharfinator

Sounds like Fuller is going to stay/go based on his camp.

      • SC Dave (I demand a new OC!)

        Agreed. As it should be.

      • willbest

Why wouldn’t he, he is a cheap camp body this year. I find it hard to believe that he isn’t worth a spot on the 90-man

        • BerwynBomber

Agreed. I think we would be crazy to get rid of him yet (unless a sweet deal was offered for him). That said, I think it would be perfectly justifiable for Fuller to say, “fuck this, get me out of here,” after what Fangio did.

          • SC Dave (I demand a new OC!)

            ? What did Fangio do?

          • willbest

He called him out for being soft. Something like “He has been medically cleared, he just needs the mindset” or such

          • SC Dave (I demand a new OC!)

So what? Look what happened when Buddy called The Frig a “wasted pick”.

          • willbest

Sure but if Fuller really is the toadie that Fangio says the should cut him on the move to 53, and force him to go work for league min on whatever team picks him up off waivers. Fuck giving him the option to sign where he wants.

          • BerwynBomber

Agreed on that point too. And if Fuller had the balls to say trade me he should have to live with the consequences of ending up in, say, Cleveland.

          • A few problems with that idea:

            1) Every single dollar of his salary for next year is fully guaranteed. So somebody will be paying him the same no matter what happens.
            2) If he gets cut, he goes on waivers, where somebody could claim him, but that means his rookie contract sticks and they pay him the $1.74M he is owed next season, not league minimum.

If they cut him and he goes through waivers, the Bears are still responsible for paying him his full salary, unless he has offsets in his deal, which means they pay him his full salary minus however much he gets paid by his new team.

Basically, there’s nothing they can do to screw him financially for next year. If they really wanted to screw him financially, they could keep him and try to get some weak injury that’s an excuse to stick him on IR. Then he’ll hit FA next year having not played in 2 years and have basically no earning power.

But here’s the thing: Fuller was actually good in 2015, the 2nd year of his career. That’s a typical progression for a good young CB. The Bears need all the CB help they can get, and right now he’s the best CB on the roster by a mile. Dumping him makes zero sense to me.

Poor attitude. Pace doesn’t tolerate that. See Marshall, Bennett.

          • I’m not convinced he has a poor attitude. He sounded frustrated with his knee not responding well enough to let him play in his press conference when they shut him down for the season two weeks ago.

Pace spoke highly of him today too. Sounds like Pace likes Fuller, even if Fangio might not.

Bold prediction: Fuller starts and plays well for the Bears next year. They add another CB in FA, let Callahan and LeBlanc compete at nickel, and the CB group is actually average-above average next year.

          • Theodore Phillips Anus (GP)

dump his ass cause he’s soft

          • CanadaBear

After taking the entire year off due to a knee scope, I really can’t find anything wrong with what Fangio said. No doubt Fuller didn’t appreciate it.

          • BerwynBomber

Tough to presume how an individual handles pain or illness. Hey, I always thought D-Rose milked his and was generally frightened by it, but I still think calling one of your own players soft publicly is not a good idea.

  • willbest

Bears are going to draft Watson, if the teams in front of them don’t, is now my hunch.

    • Bender McLugh

I caught him in the game against Ohio State, small sample so can’t really judge him based solely on that. Walter though, he no likey:

      Deshaun Watson, QB, Clemson

      Height: 6-2. Weight: 205.
      Projected 40 Time: 4.60.
      Projected Round (2017): 1-4.

Deshaun Watson has seen his stock plummet in 2016. Charlie Campbell has
heard that Watson has been graded out as a second- or third-round
prospect. I reached out to a high-ranking personnel man with a team that
doesn’t need a quarterback, and he told me he has Watson in the third
round. He was downgraded for first read, eyes and deep accuracy. Now,
quarterbacks do get pushed up, so perhaps Watson could sneak into the
end of the first round, but Watson would be better off going back to
      school to improve his game.

      The Verdict: Bad move

He’s not Todd Collins-slow either. He’s picked up plenty of first downs with his feet, some long ones too.

      • he’s been a multi-year starter and competed at the highest levels against quality defenses. He’s had his team in the championship game 2 years in a row, and played damn well against a loaded Bama defense last year (we’ll see if he repeats the feat next week).

What good does going back to school do him? He’s proven what he’s going to prove in college. Time to get paid for your development.

        • MB30SD

I agree, that;s the one thing he knocks out of the park… plays like a fucking champ in the biggest games in college football. Over and over and over again.

  • Lorin Cox figured out what’s up with Barkley.

He was listed as a RFA at first because he would be a RFA if he didn’t get 6 games on the active roster this year. That’s the threshold for making the season count.

Once he hit that 6 game threshold, his status changed to UFA. He will be an unrestricted free agent this year.

Though the last 3 games of the season made this not really important.

    • Captain Obvious

Yeah, he really fucked himself. If he had finished strong, he would’ve gotten a big paycheck somewhere. Now he’s going to be making vet minimum with the Bears.

I wonder if he had kept playing well, if Pace would’ve had Fox play Fales instead the last 2 games, just to keep Barkley a RFA.

      • MB30SD

Fox got rid of his Oline coach and his DB coach. I understand the later, not so much the former. Quite frankly, I was pleasantly surprised with Larsen and Kush filling in. It made me not hate the move going away from Slausen and makes me think that Pace is rather good at evaluating talent once pro-NFL tape exists on them. Though he is impressively unlucky with injuries on his FAs

    • MB30SD

slauson voted SD’s best olineman of the year. Though I’m not sure if that means much?

      • Johnnywad

Slauson while good, wouldn’t have made a damn bit of difference this year. I don’t really think poor guard play was much of an issue.

        • willbest

You have to remember that Sitton fell in our lap. We were looking at Leno-WH-Grassu-Long-Massie, with Larsen backing them up.

          • Johnnywad

I do. To Pace’s credit he snapped him up. And as well as Whitehair played C, I’m sure he’d have been fine at G. Now how good Grassu would have been in year 2 is anybody’s guess.

          • MB30SD

pace sucks. shouldn’t have gone and gotten him.

        • Huge Bears Penis

  • That Guy

Almost every season there is one team that goes from worst in their division to winning their division. This year it was the Cowboys. They went from 4 wins to 13.

I contend that the Bears are very much in play to be that team next year. Our division is very vulnerable; our team has a lot of young talent; our management is doing it right. Pace and Fox could very easily remain mediocre, but they could also build something solid here.

    • The Cowboys were really good 2 years ago too, and were expected to be really good last year, they just lost their QB and got shit play from that position all year.

This year they had quality QB play, and that made all the difference.

Different position than the Bears are in, though I agree the Bears could be poised to make a jump if they can find a good QB.

      • willbest

Their D also improved in that 2 year time as well.

And which is the “real” Carolina? The SB team, or the crap they were this year? Next year they could rebound big-time.

      • willbest

If I recall the Falcons were last year’s Vikings. As in they lost 3 starters on their oline. It also happened to the Chargers.

      • Carolina won 3 division titles in a row prior to this year. Their fall was shocking, and was a combo of injuries/guys lost in FA.

        • Huge Bears Penis

3 division titles in a pretty crappy division. one year they won the division with a 7-8-1 record.

          • In a year when they were drilled by injuries.

            12-4
            7-8-1
            15-1

            That’s a very good 3-year run.

might be too late. can they keep a tendon on ice that long?

    • This is the career-defining question for Ryan Pace. WHo’s your QB?

He has to come out of the first 2 rounds with the guy who he believes will be their starter for the next 10+ years. Miss and he’s done. Hit and he’s golden.

Who is he willing to stake his career on? That’s the multi-million dollar question.

      • MB30SD

why? Why this year in a down QB year with (what I’ve heard) is a bumper crop season next year?

You have three, count ’em 3, bridge QBs on the roster (well 4 if you count stripsack) so why not focus on the rest of the field this year and next and sell the farm to get one of the two best in NEXT year’s draft?

You get to 8-8 next year and everyone’s happy with the progress and you keep your job anyway. You swing for the fences next year when you’ve already patched most other gaps, no?

      • willbest

Pace will get his first head couch. He had a seemingly very good 2016
draft. He won’t have to stake his career on a QB. And that doesn’t
even make sense. Drafting Kevin White was far and away a bolder move than drafting say Kizer would be. Sometimes first round picks bust.

A staking his career on a QB move is when you trade 2+ first round picks to get the guy.

      • Bender McLugh

like any sensible business man he should hitch his star to a Hooker

      • BerwynBomber

Largely yes, but this organization has shown that it can occasionally win with the likes of Miller, Orton and Grossman (and some might even argue Cutler and McMahon). So if Fangio’s unit becomes stout enough, and Howard continues to be the goods, a decent journeyman/game manager might give Pace a few extra years to find a guy.

    • Any QB who Pace thinks will be a good NFL QB is absolutely “worth” the #3 pick, regardless of others’ evaluation of him.

      • Captain Obvious

I disagree. If you can get Kaaya in the 2nd, why would you pick him in the 1st?

And with Watson, I’ve read that he’s a 2-3rd round talent, but QBs always go a round higher, especially in a QB-poor draft like this one. So why would you pick a guy at #3 who you have a low grade on? Picking a QB who rates a 7/10 isn’t as good a strategy as a DL who’s a 9/10 or a safety who’s a 10/10. Especially if in the 2nd round you can get a QB who’s a 6.5/10.

        • “why would you pick a guy at #3 who you have a low grade on”

You wouldn’t. But if you have a QB who you think will be a 10 year NFL starter, that’s a very high grade.

You can’t just say “this guy’s not worth the #3 overall pick.” To most he might not be. All that matters is what he is to Pace.

And if he really likes Kaaya, there’s no guarantee he lasts until the round 2 pick.

If you are confident a QB will be a 10 year starter, draft him.

          • Captain Obvious

If you are the only GM in the league who thinks he’s a 10 year starter, there’s either something wrong with your evaluation, or with 31 other GMs’ evaluations.

And if you’re supremely confident in your own evaluation, then you’ve got to wonder if you really have a diamond in the rough and other GMs don’t see him the same way, why use a high pick? If everyone sees a guy as a 2nd round pick, and you’re picking high in the 2nd, it’s damn stupid to use your #3 pick in the draft to get that guy. Doesn’t matter if he’s the second coming of Tom Brady. If he’s going to be there when you pick in Round 2, THAT’s when you get him.

          • you don’t know for sure what the other guys will do.

After pick #3, Bears don’t pick again for 33 picks (swap to pick 4 of round 2). That’s an awfully long time to wait on a guy like Watson.

If you identify your guy, grab him. End of story.

          • Captain Obvious

So you’d blow your 1st round pick on a guy that has a 2nd round grade, just because you like him a lot?

Emery liked Chicken Dinner. That turned out well.

          • Big Mike

You realize how much gamesmanship goes on? GMs, Scouts all lying to each other all year long. Taking the Best Player Available isn’t a luxury 3 win teams that need a QB have. Kizer is raw, but is the best athlete with the highest upside.

          • MB30SD

            jes.

these things just seem…. obvious… to you and me

          • Huge Bears Penis

you better be damn sure he is going to be a 10 years starter, else you are drafting a guy like Ponder.

          • Captain Obvious

            This.

          • Waffle

            Kaaya is actually Ponder’s cousin.

          • yep, and that’s the trick. What’s his grade on your board?

If you grade Watson as, say, an 8 and have somebody else there who’s a 9, you take the 9.

But if you have a guy as a long-term NFL starter, I have a hard time seeing anybody else with a higher grade. The value from that is insane.

Can’t reach, but also have to go confidently in your evaluations.

          • MB30SD

who’s your fav right now for us Data.

    • Big Mike

      Kizer is not good? Hmm

      • Theodore Phillips Anus (GP)

we’re probably getting Kizer so that should be interesting

        • Bender McLugh

I’d be miffed if he’s picked at 3. trade back & snag him

EDIT: scratch that, he’s the #1 QB this draft, I’d be happy with him but honestly would rather have a Hooker on the line.

          • willbest

You can’t risk that. Jags #4 might be in the QB market and Jets #6 definitely are. Especially if the people in front of them grab all the top tier defensive talent.

          • Bender McLugh

then I’d wait, nab one of the great DE’s or Hooker

    • Waffle

I don’t get it man, you want total badass motherfuckers on D like Mike Brown but you’ll accept a JAG at QB that can’t finish. I just don’t understand. Regardless, we all know we need stud D guys that have attitudes and balls and skill.

      • Big Mike

Hopefully won’t be drafting 3rd again for a long time. If one of the top 2 picks is a QB, we almost have to take the highest rated QB. Then we have to not let him play this year right away. But there are 5 guys I could see taking with the 3rd pick that Id be very happy with. The issue is where do we get a QB? Are we rolling with Hoyer?

QB is the hardest position to get right. Having it settled and sticking with a guy is a key component of a succesful team. If that guys real good, even better. But sometimes average and consistent is enough.

        • Waffle

I think Hoyer is a JAG but with that being said he’s a much better option than some above average college qb that doesn’t pass the badass eye test.
I would take that cuckold Hoyer any day of the week over some fucking jag college rookie while continuing to build the actual O and D pieces that will be the driver of consistent success.

          • Big Mike

Can’t tell what to make of a college QB. Need to leave it to the professionals. Even they don’t know. Almost everyone had 8 or 9 quarterbacks rated higher than Dak Prescott. Marriotta has struggled, Winston has struggled and they were consensus top QBs. The questions fans have to ask, is this the year we roll the dice. I say it has to be. I’d love to put it off, but until you get QB settled, your Cleveland.

          • BerwynBomber

Mariota hasn’t struggled that much … unless you expect a rookie to play like Prescott/Marino/R-berger … and those guys were by far the exception to the rule.
But Mariota acquitted himself fairly well his rook season, and by most metrics he was a borderline top ten guy in this his second year before going down.
You still have to exhibit patience with a young QB … not saying you don’t know that but sometimes think the masses may not.

          • Big Mike

See my posts below responding to waffle. Marriotta has struggled at times. But i am a big fan of his. Just saying that even a top QB, in a good draft for QBs will struggle. Of his 28 starts, in almost a third of them he’s had a passer rating in the 60s or lower.

          • willbest

Mariota has had a solid season throwing to no-name recievers. Then he broke his leg which might drastically hurt him a la RG3. Then again, his brain isn’t filled with sawdust and he can work his progressions, particularly in the RZ it seems.

          • Big Mike

He has, I’d love to have him. He’s exactly what you want out of a top 5 pick QB. What I said was at times he struggled.

In 2015 his team went 3-9 when he played. His overall passer rating was good (91.5), but he was remarkably inconsistent. He had 5 games with a passer rating in the 60s, along with 3 games over 100. All three of the games he went over 100, the Titans won.

This year, passer rating went up to 95.6. His team went 8-8, but he still had 4 terrible, terrible games. Passer ratings of 46, 54, 45, and 68. Remarkably the Titans split those games.

          • Waffle

Dak Prescott was once considered one of the top QB’s in the draft until his off the field incident. At no time were 8 or 9 guys above him.

          • Big Mike

You’re right. There were 5-6 ranked higher than him consistently. Going into the draft, there were.

The fact that he was the 135th player taken shows that NFL teams didn’t see “value” or “fit” until the that pick. Like I said, can’t tell what to make of college QBs. Even for professionals, who have significant resources and access to the player, his coaches, teammates, etc. Even the Cowboys took him with their 2nd pick of the 4th round ( a compensatory pick).

          • Waffle

the eye test of college football is usually right. A lot of successful pro qb’s looked like men playing a boys game in college.
Other guys just went along for the ride.
There is no QB that passes the eye test to warrant a 1st round pick at QB this year. There are SEVERAL defensive players that are men amongst boys. This is the year to snag 2 D and 1 O badasses in my opinion.

          • Big Mike

I don’t know who your eye doctor is. I’d like to have 20/20 vision like that. But I understand what you are saying. As we get closer to the draft, I’m very curious what the top analysts who not only evaluate players in this year’s draft, but also compare draft classes, have to say about this year’s QBs. The problem is when do the Bears take a QB? Next year? With a lower draft choice? In the 2nd round or later? I don’t know. I’ve always been the guy thinking, let’s ride cutler another year and get us a football player in the first round. Not because I love Cutler that much, but because having the QB spot settled, lets you build the whole team. What if Cleveland and SF both lose their minds and take QBs. We’ve essentially got the #1 pick of the draft. Garret, Allen, Tabor, all fit needs. Or we take the third best QB in a draft class that your saying isn’t even a good QB class (that would be a disaster). But if garret and Allen go first, we’ve then got a shot at the best QB in the draft class. At that point, maybe someone below us is ready to deal multiple picks.

Too many variables. My point is when do the bears spend a #1 on a QB. Or are they thinking they’ve got a bead on this year’s Dak? Obviously that’s the golden ticket. Or.. do they go after Garropolo?

          • CanadaBear

            Better than 3-13? Really?

I get Cutler is your guy. I don’t understand how you can rationalize away all his faults and the fact that he hasn’t done shit in 8 years with the Bears. I understand all your excuses for his not winning but at some point most people admit it’s just not going to work. That’s where the majority of the regs are at. We don’t hate him but after 8 years it’s obvious it ain’t happening here.

          • BerwynBomber

I agree EXCEPT I would clarify the most vocal regs. Everytime Jeff posts a Cutty poll he gets more support than otherwise, so I think it is matter of a silent majority still behind Cutler.

That said, I don’t know if Pox are.

          • Bender McLugh

it’s a matter of no better options, although arguably Hoyer could be the better-enough option next year

          • Waffle

When people post stuff like you just did it’s kind of like when people talk about Cutlers red zone INT’s…..from 2009 and yet they talk about them in the present and then use them as comparison fodder when our JAG’s do insane and terrible things.
I don’t mind a QB with faults when I know that the positives outweigh them. I also know that you can be almost perfect but if the rest of your team, especially your D, performs a la 2013/2014 your team is going to suck.
I know that Cutler is the best option at QB right now and so do you all. I also get why it may be time to cut ties. I further know what that will entail when it comes to the way the QB position will look this coming year with CuckHoyer…..and for the last fucking time I AM OK WITH IT….as long as we draft real D talent and bring in FA talent and fill in O holes.

          • Big Mike

I agree with you. But when do we fix the QB slot?

          • Waffle

in 2018 once we’ve added at least 8 stud pieces through 2 drafts and 2 FA periods.

          • Big Mike

But we’ll be picking near the back  of the round with the other playoff teams hopefully.  So your saying that the 2nd QB ( I would definitely pass if the top 2 are off the board) is not as good as the mid to late first round QB we might get  next year.  Or at you proposing draft day shenanigans next year to move up.
I like your idea, don’t get me wrong.   But the bullet needs to be bitten.

            _____________________________

          • Waffle

I guess I’d like to start considering a young draft pick QB when we know if a new coach or coordinator is coming in. I’m not opposed to a high priced FA QB if the other pieces are there. The other pieces need to be there regardless. Let’s give the overall team some teeth again!

          • Big Mike

Yeah, that’s good thinking. My assumption is we win the NFC North next year and are Fox takes us to the Superbowl 🙂 The teeth are starting to show. You could see signs of the front 7 being bad asses. 3rd down we were terrible. We couldn’t blitz, because we needed 8 men (joking) in coverage and still couldn’t cover a tight end, or D up short of the fiist down stick. We also played 20+ plays more on defense then our opponents. If pace has 2 off-seasons like he did in 2016, we’re looking pretty strong. I think his Free Agent signings were great. But you wonder if McPhee and especially Trevathan are ever going to be right again. Kyle Fuller..WTF get on the field. Cleared to play, but not ready? I don’t understand. Bitch better show up next year. Derrick Rose got run out of town for that nonsense and he was a league MVP. The only good news with him, is he’s cheap and has to be better than Tracy Porter (who was playing on one leg..respect).. Or one of the 5 other guys we played at CB. I refuse to learn their names or tell them apart.

          • CanadaBear

Here’s a stat I haven’t seen around here. Cutler’s TD’s with Bears = 154 in 8 years that’s about 19/year. His TO’s in that time are 139 (109 INT’s and 30 fumbles lost). That works out to about 17/year. Not a lot of difference to say the least.

          • Waffle

wouldn’t it more like 7yrs and not 8? he played like 2 games this year. Also, you can’t look at these numbers in a vacuum, you and I both know you have to watch the games.
Each game was it’s own unique situation.

          • Theodore Phillips Anus (GP)

Cuck Hoyer is my next avatar.

          • MB30SD

I like this one. Well, I hate it, but it’s funny.

          • Waffle

photo shop a ball gag onto Hoyer’s picture….or replace his team photo with a gimp mask.

          • MB30SD

see, just read this… we ARE actually on the same page.

Kizer, watson… some fucking 1-year QB outta fucking wyoming (DAFUQ?!?!?!?!) worth our first #3 in decades!?!

I say HEEEELL NAW! You go with an allen or a hooker and get a franchine 10 year HOF candidate at a position of dire need and hopefully cross it off the list for the next 10 seasons.

… which brings me to… have we had ANY of those in the last 5-6 years? even one? Long might be the closest?

          • SC Dave (I want new coords!)

Those first two paragraphs are the shit, and I will subscribe to the newsletter.

I know MB has a raging boner for Hooker, but I’d be just as happy with Garrett. Regarding Allen, Barnett, and that fucking Solomon dude (Davis?), I would be happy with any of them, especially if we could move down 4 picks or so and get an extra 2nd.

      • MB30SD

Here let me enlighten the JW… the johnny waffle my maings.

        1. You know I’m a D guy regardless, so D is critical from my standpoint anyway

        2. This year isn’t the year to get our franchise and we still have other building to do. D, WR, TE, some shoring up the oline

        3. Here’s my net-net:
        – Get the rest of the team seriously bad ass this offseason and next
        – Stick with whomever wins in the Hoyer/Barkely/Shaw cage math this year (briiidge)
        – Then next year, sell the farm and do whatever it takes to get the best QB in the ’18 class that you think fits your culture/style/now bad ass personnel

        That’s it. Make more sense?

        • Waffle

          1. D is the most important right now because it still has so many holes.
          2. A QB must not be chosen this year.
          3. Barkley must never be allowed to quarterback for the Bears ever again.
Roll with that JAG Hoyer and field a D and Special Teams that can actually score once in a while and impact a game.

          • MB30SD

            SEE THIS!

we ARE totally and utterly on the same page. 100% actually. There it is!

Get your chise in ’18 no matter what it takes.

          • SC Dave (I want new coords!)

I think I’d rather roll with Shaw until there is a reason to think otherwise. But what will probably happen, because we’re the Bears, is we get 3 great, 1 so so, and 3 terrible games from Cutler, and 9 mediocre from Hoyer when Jay fractures another piece of glass.

      • Scharfinator

When did you ever think MB wasn’t all about the D?

        😀

  • Captain Obvious

The more I think of it, the more I think the defense needs guys who can take the ball away. Having a record low number of turnovers means action is needed.

So, get Hooker. If you think he’ll be available mid-round, do your damnedest to trade back. Even be willing to take below value, as long as you get something for the trade back. But get Hooker; he’s the real deal and will be a YUGE upgrade to the backfield, and that means more turnovers, too.

    • MB30SD

      JEEEEESSSS please!

    • have to add a vet CB and FS in FA, IMO.

Then let Fuller/Hall compete at CB2, LeBlanc/Callahan at nickel.
      Amos/Bush at SS.

Be willing to add quality via the draft as well, but not forced into it then. That’s a solid secondary.

      • MB30SD

adding eric berry and will hill (which we should 100% do) still wouldn’t change my current thought. all things being equal come draft day, i would STILL take hooker (if he’s as advertised) and finally cross safety off our 10 year desperate need list. We have Dlinemen who are supposed to step up, we have ZERO dbs.

  • willbest

“And if it’s a second round pick, expect – as we both have thought – Hoyer to be opening day starter.” – Jeff

I think MB hacked Jeff’s twitter feed.

  • willbest

“With Bears run game and defense in 2017, Fox will argue 0 turnovers will win most games.” – Jeff

This strategy works as long as you never find yourself down more than 7 points. But the Bears face Brees, Big Ben, Cam Newton, and Rodgers/Stafford twice. All of whom have in the past shown the ability to put points on the board. Hell even Dalton and Flacco have their moments.

    • SC Dave (I want new coords!)

Dont forget Ryan. That offense has kicked ass this season.

  • Waffle

Hoyer is such a cuck and so predisposed to not taking any risks even if the play is there for him to make that he’ll just sit there and take the easy throw no matter what. So while that does result in lower turnovers it also results in the Bears needing the 1985 Bears or 2000 Ravens D to win games.

    • Bender McLugh

      or a Howard-smash-your-face run game

      • Waffle

it’s nice to know we’ll have the Howard run game for all 16 games next year but you need a backup that can pick up the slack if Howard gets banged up. Langford didn’t seem up to it this year.

        • Bender McLugh

agreed, Carey looked the part but can’t stay healthy

          • CanadaBear

His running style isn’t conducive to good health.

        • SC Dave (I want new coords!)

Langford never seemed the part to me. But hopefully I’m fucking wrong.

      • willbest

Maybe. If we jettison Alshon, Howard is going to face a lot of 8-man boxes. Teams are going to make Hoyer throw it deep in order to beat them.

        • Bender McLugh

not sure about that but definitely lots of IFs there with Alshon gone – if White stays on the field, if Cam continues to improve, if we draft/sign a slot replacement for Royal.

        • BearDown100393

Just asking…. How were Howard’s stats with Alshon on the sideline?

          • willbest

17 for 77 against the Giants. 1 reception on 8 targets for 22 yards (Cutler QB)
18 for 84 against the Titans. 3 receptions on 5 targets 43 yards (Barkley)

32 for 117 and 3 TDs against San Fran (no catches/targets that was the blizzard game)

13 for 86 against Detroit. 2 receptions on 5 targets for 24 yards.

        • SC Dave (I want new coords!)

Which is why we keep Alshon.

    • Sauron’s right eyeball

There’s a lotta shit wrong with this organization that goes way beyond the QB yonny. If the Bears stopped selling merchandise and seats, I honestly believe we’d all be amazed at how quickly they’d be able to sit a division crown.

      • MB30SD

agree… and when your President and CEO has publicly stated that he doesn’t give a single fuck about whether the org’s team wins or not…

…you know you’re proper fucked as a football org.

        • BearDown100393

I am amazed that has not resonated louder in this particular media group.

          • MB30SD

            seriously. how can it not???

    • BearDown100393

Isn’t a backup more or less expected not to take risks? The NFL provides minimal practice time for backup QBs, let alone reps with the 1st string.

      • Waffle

        incorrect.

        • CanadaBear

And yet he had as many wins as your buddy.

          • Waffle

ummm….which goes to show you that a captain checkdown….with a run game and a so so D doesn’t get you shit.
I’m personally ok with another season of our offense not scoring as long as we have 2 drafts and 2 FA periods to build a group of studs. THEN AND ONLY THEN do you bring in a college kid at QB. And you bring in one that has balls and moxy and fucking courage and skill.

          • SC Dave (I want new coords!)

Maybe, just maybe, we’ll get lucky as the Pats and Shaw will become a miracle.

Wouldn’t that be the shit? So that we dont even have to think about another QB until I’m fucking 75 years old and we have 6 more SB titles?

And Brady never had anyone like Jordan Howard.

          • Waffle

            Corey Dillon disagrees with you!

    • That Guy

Or 2015 Broncos. You have to add them to the list as well now.

that was like when Seattle beat up Manning in the 2013 Super Bowl.

      • Waffle

yeah, I can see that , but Manning did actually perform in the playoffs and was better than a Siemian but yeah, the 2015 Broncos D and the supporting O guys were amazing.

  • Huge Bears Penis

We could use a kicker and punter, any body out of college worth our #3 pick?

    • willbest

There is a promising Kicker playing for the South Eastern North Dakota State. He only played one year there though. Before that he was at Central Amish Community College. But he doesn’t fly. Next year that won’t be a problem because New Orleans is the furthest away game and you can get there in a day. But in 2018 we have some west coast teams so he is going to have to miss Friday practice those weeks to get there, and it could be a real problem if we have to go to the West Coast for a Thursday night game. But you should see how many cows he can kick a football over. Dudes legit. I might consider using our #3 on him.

      • burntorangenavyblue

Then he gets traded or released for no apparent reason

Next year hopefully will be what this year was expected to be. Tangible improvement in all three phases AND in the W column.

Still two years away from legitimate playoff contention in my opinion, but stranger things have happened.

I don’t like Birdcage but Jeff continues to point out what he’s done with what he has to work with. So I’m OK with giving him another year. The real key is the QB coach (Ragone) if we get a young QB.

Hoyer? Meh – 0 INTs usually means a “Captain Checkdown” kind of guy. But no one is saying he’s the long term answer so fine by me.

Washington Jr. Safety, Buddha Baker declares for the draft.

He’s a fast, but smallish (5’10”, less than 200) for an NFL safety.

Great name won’t be enough to move him from day two.

    • MB30SD

      not interested.

I desperately want to get a Hooker al!

      • AlbertInTucson

Like I said, no one expects baker to go before day 2.

IF Frisco takes a QB, that means Garrett or Allen will still be there at 3.

Tough to pass either of THOSE two, even for Hooker.

        • SC Dave (I want new coords!)

I have yet to see much of Allen. That good, or a product of playing on a superior team?

          • AlbertInTucson

Yes, a lot of talent around him.

But he’d have guys like Hicks, Floyd and Freeman around him as a Bear.

        • MB30SD

agree, but like I’ve been saying… we took a DL last year AND we have other guys who are supposed to be beasts on the DLine.

We haven’t taken a non white, non shit safety in 10 years AND we have abject shit in our dbackfield…. thus… take Hooker

  • Waffle

This is the year of bringing in D studs:
Myles Garrett will be gone but look at the guys that will be on the board:
    Jonathan Allen at DL
Malik Hooker and Jamal Adams at Safety
Marlon Humphrey and Marshaun Lattimore at CB
Malik McDowell and Caleb Brantley at DL if you wanted to get a more talented Ego Ferguson.
We could pick at 3 or move back a few and still get a top talent. Time to make the Bears D fucking badass again. If Malik Hooker is there at 3 you HAVE to take him. We need our Earl Thomas. We’ve needed him since Mike Brown left.

Bring in Hooker and pair him with a veteran Free Agent Safety.

Then pick a badass Nigerian pass rusher in early round 2.

    • MB30SD

I just fell in love with you again

      • SC Dave (I want new coords!)

    • MB30SD

Oh, and THOSE (yes, plural) safeties you talked about are names Eric Berry and Will Hill

      • Waffle

so bring in HILL and Berry, draft Allen, or move back a tiny bit for McDowell or Brantley and then move up a bit to get Peppers to create the nickel LB I’ve been boning for all of these years.

        #KostnerStyle

        • MB30SD

No, I’m about going ALL in on safety so we don’t have to mention the fucking position in another off season for another 5-10 years. Get Hill, Berry, AND Hooker my maings.

There’s your 10 year badass plan at safety… and done! After 10 years of neglect, we need the atomic bomb solution.

Will Hill is youngish but would he be ok with splitting time with Hooker?

          • MB30SD

dooooon’t caaaaare. Just keep him off the weed and give him another shot at the NFL. Maybe that’s all he wants?

        • AlbertInTucson

Berry JUST turned 28 last month.

    • Theodore Phillips Anus (GP)

      Who wants to sex Mutumbo?!

      • Waffle

        lol

    • SC Dave (I want new coords!)

Did you watch that reel on Solomon Davis? Looked worthy of consideration to me. Seems to have great *vision*, which does not seem teachable, though maybe Mike could shed some light on that

      • Waffle

        I did not see that

      • MB30SD

looked pretty studly. god knows the announcers were practically fellating him on the field of play

  • AlbertInTucson

    “This won’t happen again”.

That’s what Amtrak says after every derailment, no?

    • willbest

I think he meant to say “If this were to happen again, I will be unemployed”

    • SC Dave (I want new coords!)

I hate to admit it, but I laughed at that

  • Theodore Phillips Anus (GP)

Did you guys see Inside the NFL on Showtime last night?

Brandon on his season: “Being on the Jets was like wearing a diaper for the whole year. And you are not allowed to change that diaper so you just sit there in it.”

Nice analogy for a guy whose initials are BM.

You haven’t taken your meds, have you?

    • AlbertInTucson

Translation: “Get me out of New york!”

    • MB30SD

damn, we fucked UPPPPP cutting him when we did. He’s not a locker room cancer, we’re just pussies!

    • BearDown100393

If anyone understood the inhumanity of having to wear a fecal stained diaper, that person would be Brandon Marshall.

If you had the #1 pick overall, would you take:

    Garrett
    Allen
    Trubinsky
    Hooker

Walter Football updated their mock today:
    https://walterfootball.com/draft2017.php

They joined me in calling for Allen keeping Garrett #1 overall for the Browns.

I watch that kid’s A&M film and I see a very good OLB but I don’t see the 2nd coming of LT.

    • MB30SD

oh well herrrroooo hooker (soon to jump to #3)!

    • Waffle

If Allen is there which I don’t he will be I would have no problem taking him. IF he is gone let’s get us a badass safety in Hooker.

    • AlbertInTucson

Garrett, supposedly, was an impact player this season despite a bad ankle and a lot of double-teams.

      • SC Dave (I want new coords!)

My prediction is that Barnett will be the best defensive player in the draft.

    • AlbertInTucson

Wish one of them came with a SURE THING tattoo across his forehead.

      • Johnnywad

It’s only a matter of time before that actually happens.

    • Governerd

Watson going at 44? If he’s there when Da Beloved pick at 36, you sprint to the podium and don’t look back. Wait, I see, they updated their first round but not their second (“The Bears selected a quarterback in Round 1…”).

    • Sactowns#1

Trade down, get Wormley and Lattimore. that would be NICE!

    • SC Dave (I want new coords!)

“Allen is a beast. Allen should have gotten the Butkus and the Heismann.”

That’s what they said about Clowney.

    • willbest

Only 1 tackle with a first round grade and the first WR goes at #15 after not 1 but 2 RBs? In fact, there is only 10 offensive players being taken in the first round, three of which are RBs? That seems suspect.

  • Theodore Phillips Anus (GP)

Ok, so after watching some vid of Pace today and the press on him, here is what I think WILL happen.

Walter’s Football and I would go Allen at this juncture. The blog calls for Garrett, Allen or Hooker.

But Pace will not do that. Pace is going Trubinsky. He needs to go all in on a QB to make his splash.

    • Waffle

no fucking way he goes Trubaleski. Not after the muppets they’ve been trotting out there at DB and the street DL experiences of the last 2 years.

      • MB30SD

He does and I’m out. Smmfh

        • SC Dave (I want new coords!)

          Liar

    • Irish Sweetness

I don’t hate Trubisky. But I like Jay and a DE or that safety more. I don’t believe Pace when he talks about the future. By future, he means the next two seasons.

    • Bender McLugh

      Please no

  • BerwynBomber
    • BearDown100393

      Because it is common sense.

      • SC Dave (I want new coords!)

Alshon will win MVP, and OPY

    • SC Dave (I want new coords!)

In the presser, I loved this:

Coach John Fox added: “You’ve got to think it and believe it before it happens.”

      This is SOOOO true.

  • burntorangenavyblue

There are absolutely no QBs worth 1st round picks this year. There is ABSOLUTELY several day one starter defensivebacks worth that 1st round pick.

I am absolutely SICK of watching Nelson depantsing our defense on ONE DAMN PLAY that matters most!

    • MB30SD

Keep. We take a QB @ 3 and I’ll lose my shit maings

    • AlbertInTucson

No reaching with that #3, please.

  • Irish Sweetness

Wow. This job has aged Pace.

    • MB30SD

      Heaps of silly crow please….

  • Theodore Phillips Anus (GP)

Redskins game: Barkley throws 5 picks

4/5 of the picks came on first down

    That’s a ridiculous stat.

If that doesn’t roast Birdcage then what does

    • BuddhaJoe

Loggains definitely wasn’t a world beater, but I’m pretty sure he wasn’t the one telling Barkley to throw into double or triple coverage to Bellamy and Thompson.

  • BuddhaJoe

Thinking they gotta go D with the first pick, the QBs aren’t worth a first. If Watson falls to them in the 2nd pull the trigger. I know people are down on Cutty but gotta roll with him until they know they got somebody better. OR throw a bunch of money at Cousins and cut him, I’d be down with that since they have the cap space to do it. He’d have to be overpaid but they can afford it.

  • willbest

If we score Berry, I don’t see us drafting a safety at #3. In fact, I don’t know if Pace can avoid tipping his hand this year in FA. If Cutler is still on the roster at draft time, and he has bought Berry then he is drafting Allen. If Cutler is gone and he didn’t go get Cousins, its going to be a QB.

In fact, Cleveland might be selling “sky high” on Garrett in order to get the Bears to jump the 9ers or get the 9ers to trade up so the Bears don’t jump them in order to get a QB.

    • Huge Bears Penis

no real reason to cut Cutler early. only reason Cutty is gone before draft is if someone traded for him.

  • Huge Bears Penis

    new thread

  • Sauron’s right eyeball

I’ve got some difficult news for some of you guys.

A GM without a QB is an ex GM.

Does that mean the Bears have to use the #3 pick on a QB? No, not neccessarily but I think it’s highly likely Pace does exactly that. Next season will be year 3 of Pace’s tenure and he ain’t going down without drafting a QB in my opinion. I’m thinking there’s a 70% chance he’s going QB. Come to think about it Trubinsky has kind of a Grabowski ring to it. If Pace nails the pick, he set for life. If he plays it safe and never finds his QB, game over.
