Non-Glennon Reflections on the Second Preseason Game

| August 21st, 2017

There will be little mention of Mike Glennon and Mitch Trubisky in this post beyond this: everybody is now seeing what I’ve been telling them to see for six months. Mike Glennon isn’t any good. It doesn’t require stats. It doesn’t require nuance. It doesn’t require Bill Belichick’s football acumen. If you open your eyes and watch him play quarterback you become deftly aware of his limitations. They are many. He’s just not any good.

On the rest of the game…

  • Tarik Cohen is brilliant and it’s very clear the Bears are going to be using him in a larger role than just third-down back / kick returner. I’d still be concerned about someone his size taking too much contact over a sixteen game schedule but ten carries a game is now in play.
  • Who gets cut first: Roberto Aguayo or Daniel Braverman? Both are exceedingly useless.
  • Listen, preseason lovers. If these games are as important as you tell me then Roy Robertson-Harris is going to make the final 53. No player was more impressive in Arizona.
  • Why is everybody so concerned about Kevin White’s preseason performance? (1) He’s playing with Mike Glennon. He has no shot to be successful. (2) Bears don’t care what he does in these August games. They need him healthy in September.
  • Bears are going to be cutting a decent tight end. Both Brown and Braunecker are not bad players but how are they cracking through Sims/Miller/Shaheen?
  • Bears seem unclear about their kick returner. Cunningham was on kickoffs, Deonte Thompson scored off a missed field goal, Tarik Cohen and Eddie Jackson have both seen action on punt returns. Not sure what it all means.

That’s it.

Roberto Aguayo or Daniel Braverman? Both are exceedingly useless.

DHC and Prosinski are also stealing oxygen.

Bears are going to be cutting a decent tight end. Both Brown and Braunecker are not bad players but how are they cracking through Sims/Miller/Shaheen?

Drafting Shaheen in the second round is a head-scratcher for me. Baker/Obi/LB? OT! Build that line! But no, another TE ….

Bears seem unclear about their kick returner.

Agreed. Love to see Cohen out there, And he won’t exactly be the cow-bell back. Deonte is a dangerous returner, but he did not return one punt or kick on Saturday. He may end up as Mitchell’s best friend, so perhaps we don’t want to see a Devin situation …. although Devin was just a shit receiver with not very much going on between the ears in all likelihood. But with Deonte and Tarik returning, I see decent field position in our future. Remember that?

    • Bender McLugh

      Top 10 ST’s baby!

    • DaBearsBlog

I don’t know what’s going on at safety. Seems Demps/Jackson will start. Amos and HJQ seem safe. Rest on shaky ground.

      • CanadaBear

        Let’s hope Demps/Jackson start!

    • Shaheen will really have to step up cuz lots of talent was still on the board before we traded down for him in the 2nd.

Then again, if Jackson becomes just as good as Baker/Obi etc, does it matter?

      – It’s my understanding that Prosinki is just another jag at S, but that he’s a good sp teamer.

Can we say the same about the other backup S? Dunno.

A name we haven’t heard much about is Hall who was supposed to be our CB/S savior.

      – I’m not impressed by Brown. He’s solid, but not explosive like Miller. Stash him on the PS till Miller breaks.

      – I think I was the only one defending Deonte when ppl were cutting him from the team a month ago.
He’s an underrated WR with SP team value. I trust him more than all those new guys like Wright, Cruz, Randle, heck, even White who hasn’t shown shit.

  • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

SMH… It is disappointing that the Blogfather does not see the Greatness of one Daniel Braverman.

    • CanadaBear

I think there’s only a few people on here that recognize that greatness. I’m not one of them.

      • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

I will let you in on a secret {glances around to see if anyone is listening} I don’t think so either, I just picked him as a no name player to give props to and talk up, like Irish does with fat DLinemen or no talent hack QBs

        • CanadaBear

I knew that (at least I assumed so because you don’t seem insane!!!!!!!!).

        • Johnnywad

          Don’t lie.

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

you weren’t supposed to hear that.

  • Suns Out, Buns out, Ciggy In

Jeff, Roy Robertson Harris will in fact make the 53. He’s the new Cornwash. He’s 295 and runs a 4’67. They are trying to turn him into a bonified 5 tech.

  • Suns Out, Buns out, Ciggy In

I think the real Jaye Howard showed up this week. They worked him into the rotation much earlier. Bullard, Goldman, etc all flashed some good plays.

Timu continues to frustrate. He’ll make a pro-bowl caliber play then get lost in coverage for an easy score.

Fangio will love what he sees from Floyd. He looped around on a couple of stunts then had insane closing speed to force some shitty throws by the QBs.

    • Floyd pretty much has just one move but it seems he’s too fast for them to stop him.

I hope he can learn a counter, like that Freeney inside spin, then Floyd will be monster.

“Not sure what it all means.”

Official Slogan of the 2017 Chicago Bears Season.

  • CanadaBear

Get a kick out of all the tributes for Jerry Lewis. FFS, the guy hasn’t done anything in the last few decades but host a telethon that he was paid crazy amounts of money. He hasn’t made me laugh since I was about 10. Nothing against the guy but he hasn’t been relevant since the early 60’s.

    • EnderWiggin

I keep getting the song “Great Balls of Fire” in my head. That isn’t right, is it?

      • AlbertInTucson

Jerry Lee “The Killer” Lewis is still kickin’.

        • AlbertInTucson

Great song, BTW. Dolly Parton did a nice cover of it in the 80s too.

          • EnderWiggin

Yep, that was good. Here is Dolly covering the Animals. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GdqOiCvNXBQ

          • AlbertInTucson

We saw Dolly live back in the 80s on a tour she did with Kenny Rogers.

She opened, then Kenny did his set, then they did a set together.

Her stage presence pretty much dominated though.

      • CanadaBear

Here’s one from The Killer! Movin’ and Groovin’, getting it both night and day!”

    • AlbertInTucson

“.. he hasn’t been relevant since the early 60’s”

True. But neither have most 90 year olds and I. too, was never a big fan once I got past 10 or so either.

Still, I don’t think he deserves to be dismissed.

Favorite Jerry Lewis film that I would still actually watch: Rockabye Baby.

I wonder if France will be closed today in his honor?

      • CanadaBear

Never was a fan, even as a kid. Always thought he got way too much credit for almost everything he did. He was making 7 figures with each telethon.

        • AlbertInTucson

Yes, he was mostly too over-the-top for me. Rockabye baby is actually a pretty straight performance by his standards .

The Telethon made him famous, again, and he definitely milked the perqs.

MDA was even headquartered here for a while.

Questions came up about just how much of the money on the old tote board actually went to research and how much went to administrative costs.

It was my understanding that stations that carried the telethon made money by doing so.

          • Sactowns#1

Nutty Professor was pretty good and they say he invented Video Assist.

          • AlbertInTucson

            Never could get thru “Nutty>”.

I remember going to the movies on a Saturday as a kid to see

VISIT TO A SMALL PLANET, CINDERFELLA, THE BELLBOY, THE ERRAND BOY and others.

Entertained as an 8 or 9 year old but, upon further review…

          • Sactowns#1

The Bellboy is actually an interesting study in filmmaking. Jerry directed it and really did appreciate the art form.

          • AlbertInTucson

True. His directorial debut, the first use of video assist and the Bellboy character has virtually no dialogue.

          • CanadaBear

I saw a few of his movies as a kid at Halloween. Every year as kids we signed pledge cards not to be juvenile delinquents at Halloween. In return we got to go to the theater and see a double feature. They were always terrible. The Blob, The Tarantula and Jerry Lewis movies. Ugh.

          • AlbertInTucson

Used to see some classics in re-release at theatres in the early 1960s.

FORBIDDEN PLANET and SHANE come to mind.

            Both seemed eerily familiar.

I now realize that was because I HAD seen them as a much younger child, and probably fallen asleep during them, at the Drive-In movies in the 50s with my Parents.

“(1) He’s playing with Mike Glennon. He has no shot to be successful. (2)
Bears don’t care what he does in these August games. They need him
    healthy in September.”

    1. Irrelevant. Cam Meredith looked good with Hoyer and Barkley. Glennon is not worse than those two.
    2. I am not going to wish for the kid to get injured, but its pretty obvious that the Bears WR core would be improved if he were on IR or cut. Since the Bears aren’t likely to cut him the best thing to happen is for him to learn how to play NFL football before, you know, the games matter.

    • DaBearsBlog

Glennon is worse than Hoyer. What is it going to take?

      • willbest
        • willbest

I get that you are excited for Trubisky to play, but claiming Glennon is worse than Hoyer is nonsensical. Hoyer had the best 4 game starting stretch of his career with the Bears. That is not how he played in Cleveland or Arizona or Texas and it won’t be how he plays this year in San Fran.

      • BearDown100393

        Worse than Barkley?

      • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

As someone that thoroughly hates Hoyer, I have to agree Glennon is worse.

        • Suns Out, Buns out, Ciggy In

in complete agreement. Hoyer got the ball out way faster and was fairly accurate albeit while being a huge pussy at the same time.

        • Scharfinator

I always think of the scene in “A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court” where he tricks everyone into thinking he’s a wizard and caused it himself.

          • Suns Out, Buns out, Ciggy In

            you mean Black Knight?

          • Scharfinator

If you mean that movie that ripped off Mark Twain.. yes?

          • Suns Out, Buns out, Ciggy In

I believe it was this Twain guy that ripped off Martin Lawrence.

          • Scharfinator

            Oh right, my mistake 🙂

        • Sactowns#1

Then you would quickly rush to the henhouse, select your finest offering then sacrifice it on some rock. When that doesn’t work you kill all your chickens. two minutes later the sun reappears and you tell yourself you saved the day. Your kids then starve to death over the winter but you console your wife by telling her how you brought the sky god back to life with poultry.

agree with Jeff about Tarik Cohen. I was fucking disgusted when the Bears selected him but then I started to think about past 4th round selections and what a crapshoot it is and then started watching his highlight tapes. I lazily thought of Garrett Wolfe and wondered if we could even use him effectively.
Here’s the good news: He is a stud….and we’re not even using him correctly yet. Wait until you see them get Tarik the ball in space during the regular season. Not some predictable screen bullshit where Grasu whiffs on his guy or can’t get out to take care of the nearest defender to the inside but a real creative use of this kid in space will be something to watch.

    • willbest

Lets see him make it through a season before we call him a stud, but he does look good out there right now.

      • Suns Out, Buns out, Ciggy In

understood, please inform me when he officially crosses over the time threshold into studville.

      • He’s proved it against the Denver and Card’s #1 D.
Those aren’t chump Ds (and he got more reps than he’d normally get when Howard returns)

        I think he’ll be a stud.

Whether or not he can last is another matter.

        • willbest

Yes and no. Yes he performed well against the 1s. But it wasn’t necessarily when the objective of the game was to win.

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

hmmm…. so the other team’s Defenses decided to see what it was like to catch a RB from behind, and let him run as much as he wanted?

          • willbest

No but they might have decided they were going to purposefully put a player in a situation he wasn’t likely to handle in order to see if he can handle it.

They most certainly didn’t put much effort into trying to confuse the offense and mask their schemes.

          • That cuts both ways though. Birdcage wasn’t about to tip his hand on the more exotic packages with Cohen.

Bottom line. Both ran simplified versions.

Cohen wanted to get yds. The Ds wanted to stop him.

Cohen won, more often than not.

And that was with Glennon vs #1s playing his first NFL games.

            Arrow is up.

  • Suns Out, Buns out, Ciggy In

it was pretty hilarious to see announcers and NFL analysts trying to sugar coat the Glennon out route for the Kendall Wright TD as if it was some sort of revelation….Trubisky did it on a sprintout to his left with Cruz, put one into a vagina sized window for Daniel Brown to drop in the first game, hit Shaheen on one on the right sidelines, etc.
I’m pretty sure that Trubisky can run the cut down cuck playbook just like Glennon.

I know it’s bold but I’m going to go ahead and predict IT breaks all Sept box office records and the new show Young Sheldon is canned by its 6th episode.

    • willbest

Young Sheldon? I thought that was some April Fools stunt or some sort of internet fanfic.

Best Sept opening – Hotel Transylvania 2 $48 million, runner up Hotel Transylvania $42 million.

Reese Witherspoon’s Sweet Home Alabama from 2002 is in the top 5 with 35 million, so that is a pretty low bar.

If I were betting on best opening weekend this year, it would be on Ninjago, but I don’t think anything has $48 million in it.

      • willbest

In other Hollywood news, Joss Whedon was using his position of authority to get mad pussy from young actresses. shocking.

      • Sactowns#1

Yeah. I think IT will crush it. Probably around $70-$90 mil.

Unfortunately it wasn’t an april fools joke but fortunately for us its being made so we can view it as some sort of cultural artifact. Akin to this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NOlzW8hx5A

        • willbest

That is a bold statement. $70 million is insane for an R-rated movie. Only 8 movies have cleared that hurdle. And if you look at all of them the only one that isn’t obvious why is 300. And none of them were horror movies.

          • Sactowns#1

Hmmm…this is true. but much like 50 shades there’s a large literary following (mind you not nearly as large and not nearly as desperate) and it looks to be a much higher caliber film than the likes of Hangover 2. Straight outa Compton did well with an August opening but its not really comparable.
Horror movies have done increasingly well over the years so if that trend holds up this year could be huge for the genre. (Get out, Alien, IT etc)

we can agree he’s better than sanchez, yes?

        • willbest

Kaep? Sure, but since the only person that can regularly win with a backup is Darth Hoodie I don’t see any point in having Kaep on a roster. He isn’t going to be better than your starter. He isn’t your future. And he is a distraction.

Butch and I agree on those other guys not being in the league though. They are the group of players I consider “lose with dignity”. F that, I would rather roll with Shaw or Fales or Barkley or somebody that hasn’t proven they don’t have what it takes. But then I am not an NFL coach. Maybe its more important for the development of the other 52 men on the roster to not have a newbie running the 2nd team drills since most of the players on the second team will see action at some point.

      • My whole argument for Kap is this.

I personally wouldn’t hire him as a QB.

However, I also wouldn’t roster half the backups in the NFL which Kap is def superior to.

I won’t even go down the list cuz it includes such all-stars as Chad Henne, Hackenburg, Gabbert, and Mallet….but suffice it to say, Kap should be on a team just based on talent and “upside” alone.

The only disclaimer I have is if Kap is asking for $10M or more then that’s a bit of a stretch.

But otherwise, he’s much more talented and experienced than MANY backups and even 1 or 2 “starters”

      • BearDown100393

        Free Hat

    • Irish Sweetness

      And Jerry wanted Manziel??

  • Good thoughts, Jeff. My take on a few of them:

    1) I’d let Cohen return punts and Cunningham return kickoffs. That seems like a good way to get Cohen the ball in space a few times a game, giving him a few chances to break a big play. And I don’t think there’s really any difference on returns between Cunningham and Thompson, I just don’t think there’s room on the roster for Thompson. I’d keep Bellamy over him for other ST contributions.

    2) Bears love Braunecker on ST. I don’t think they keep Braunecker and Brown, unless Zach Miller somehow gets traded (I’d happily move him for a 6th). Even if he does get traded, do they keep 4 TEs? That’s gonna be interesting.

    3) I think RRH makes it. Likely keep 6 DL, IMO he’s the 6th. Won’t likely be active on gamedays, at least at first, unless somebody gets hurt. But they’re keeping him around. They put him on IR last year due to heat illness during camp; they obviously like him.

    • Which WRs are you keeping over Thompson?

      • Suns Out, Buns out, Ciggy In

I think it depends how they view Markus Wheaton. Can he contribute after the appendix rupture and then breaking his pinky and needing surgery? Randle is now legit injured. Cruz is not and is a proven vet. Bellamy is the best athlete out of all of them, just can’t catch consistently. Weird bunch. Lot’s of slot guys and small quick guys…which ironically we may need if all Glennon is going to do it short dump offs.

        • I just feel like, because of the reasons you mentioned, Thompson is more of a sure thing.

Our WR corps consists of castoffs, UFDAs, and possibly a bust 1st rder.

Thompson late last season began catching. Looked good running routes and decent in the return game.

He has a solid floor, and given the rest of the question marks at WR, that floor should be enough to win him a spot.

Wheaton, Randle, Cruz and Wright would really have to show me something to replace Thompson, and thus far, none of them have.

          • Suns Out, Buns out, Ciggy In

Wright is guaranteed a spot. It would suck if Thompson became a necessity at wr.

Irish, don’t you remember his returning and receiver play last year? He’s backup material.

          • Irish Sweetness

Last year vs this year though. He looks better this year,a t both … or was it just Mitchell being accurate with the passes?

          • Irish Sweetness

Deonte is obviously making the team. Cam. Somebody said Reuben is injured? Wright, Wheaton and Cruz will probably make it. You get one more between White, Gentry and Bellamy!

        • CanadaBear

The appendix didn’t rupture. They vacuumed it out. Big difference. Not sure when they play him with the broken pinkie.

      • Irish Sweetness

He’s probably the first guy you keep.

      • Meredith, White, Wheaton, Wright, Bellamy.

I keep only 5 so I can maximize superior depth at RB and TE (and don’t forget they’re keeping 3 QBs, which takes a roster spot from elsewhere too).

    • leftcoastdave

I would have agreed with you about Zach Miller three weeks ago, but now I am beginning to wonder if he is not still needed as a go to target, what he always was and will continue to be wherever he goes. I expected to see more targets to Simms and Shaheen, but with the minimal book being given to Glennon in the first two games followed by Sanchez, that is not happening. Until you know if others can fill in where the healthy Zach always produced, do you let him go?

      • Irish Sweetness

I thought the sack-Miller-because-he-might-get-injured story was bent.

      • It’s certainly possible. He’s definitely the best pass-catching TE on the roster.

But they’re not a team trying to win now, and he’s getting up there. I think it’s better for their future to get something for Miller, let Sims and Shaheen play more, and keep at least one of Braunecker and Brown, if not both.

    • Irish Sweetness

Why Benny? Thompson is faster. He’s a better returner, and he’s a better receiver than Bellamy, when you figure in speed.

      • It’s possible he sticks over Bellamy. But Bellamy is a better gunner.

  • Via Zaidman and Jeff boner

    Sanchize can get sloppy thirds.

They already know what we have in Sanchez. Maybe we give Shaw cleanup?

    • AlbertInTucson

I find it somewhat encouraging that Fox actually admitted that Trubisky with the 1s was now even a possibility.

      • willbest

Very unFox like, but then again if Fox wants to coach in 2018 his only chance is to run 8-8+ with Trubisky. Otherwise he is gone and Pace brings in his guy

        • Johnnywad

Some have already suggested that’s been the plan from day 1.

          • willbest

Oh that wouldn’t surprise me. But if Lovie had managed to win 1 more game and make the post season in 2012 I don’t think Emery would have had the balls to fire him, and we might still have him as our GM right now.

          • willbest

Which is to say, I don’t think Pace has the balls to fire Fox either. Not when he has to tell his boss that paying $5 million dollars to fish is a good idea. The McCaskey’s are probably tired of hearing that one.

      • That is a rather monumental shift in Fox speak.
He also admitted that giving Trubs #1 reps would be an ‘affront’ to Glennon, so he’s already seriously debating the switch and the inevitable fall out.
Still don’t believe Fox would actually pull the trigger on Trubs, but maybe he does considering how terrible Glennon has played and his coaching career.

        • Corporal Clott

The only one acting like the sky was going to fall was Jeff. You make a rook earn the job, that’s what coaches are supposed to do.

        • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

better not give Trubs an reps with the #1s. We really don’t want a pissed off Girraffe in camp, someone might get hurt. Giraffes are crazy motherfuckers.

    • CanadaBear

Another take could be Foxy at his most disingenuous.

  • BearDown100393

    John Fox hates Mitch Trubisky.
And Mitch Trubisky hates John Fox.
    One stays. The other leaves.

This is completely baseless. But at least it makes for an interesting story line.

  • AlbertInTucson

BTW, the NFL owners are soooo unhappy with Roger Goodell they are only extending him through 2024.

  • AlbertInTucson

    Happy 58th Birthday, Jim McMahon.

    • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

    • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

  • Malice Halice

BEARS GOT A FUCKIN SQUUUUUAAD! We takin da division this year I just don’t see how we’re not! We’re goin 4-0 n da only reason we don’t is cuz of Glennon. He is the maker/breaker of our season dis year n I fuckin despise him at this point. Our rushing attack is gonna fuck DC’s up! We got 2 EXACT OPPOSITE talents running the ball. We got many guys at receiver that’s competent. Our D is speaking for itself I just wish Danny was here. This is a schedule to win! We have the D to contain an offense like da fudge n Atl, we have WEAPONS on O to score atleast 21 against a squad like da steelers n Vikings. And da special teams seem to be coming about! This our fuckin year man. Glennon just need to MANAGE THE FUCKIN GAME. Fuckin idiot

    • AlbertInTucson

      Try a xanax.

      • SC Dave

        Looking like #16

  • AlbertInTucson

    Giants-Browns pretty inept tonight.

Worse for the men in blue, ODB AND Marshall had to be X-rayed.

  • fishing florida

I thought Glennon was looking good the other night. I just can’t believe that dumbass OC of ours was running such a limited playbook with him. Let Glennon unleash the fury, or it is time to fire that idiot OC.

  • AlbertInTucson

Browns: 9 different starting QBs in 10 seasons.

    • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

What are you talking about, they had 9 different starters the last 4 years

      • AlbertInTucson

        To start the season.

        • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

          ok I will buy that.

          • AlbertInTucson

Neither stat is a receipt for success.

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

I wonder which QB was good enough to start 2 years in a row.

          • AlbertInTucson

If they mentioned it, I missed it.

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

And the winner is Brandon Weedon

          • AlbertInTucson

            Pretty scary all by itself.

          • Benjamin Button

    • BearDown100393

  • AlbertInTucson

Giants looking for their first TD of the preseason as they hit the 2 minute warning this evening.

    • AlbertInTucson

Game over. They are still looking.

  • Malice Halice

Our team looks the best so far in Preseason

  • AlbertInTucson

“Why is everybody so concerned about Kevin White’s preseason performance?”

How about because a guy whose game is based on SPEED is coming off breaking the same leg, twice, and he didn’t look that great after breaking it the FIRST time.

    • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

he is doing the rope a dope. Don’t want to show too much in preseason.

      • AlbertInTucson

Well he sure ISN’T showing too much.

Tuesday’s Tits is taken. Wednesday’s Wangers is in the pipeline. I believe even Thursday’s Thrupennies is in the works.

But that first one looks like Shia LeBoeuf transitioned …..

      • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

damn you are right. i guess i did not even realize she had a face before you said something.

      • CanadaBear

        Shia had a good doctor!

  • AlbertInTucson

    Bears-Cards replaying on NFL Network.

    • thanks for the head’s up, Al.

3 jumped routes on stare-down Glennon. 1 int. Another near 1.
Doesn’t help when he’s ALSO inaccurate.

Totally missed not one but TWO guys wide open underneath in the flat.

  • RedBulls83

Not sure why you have to cut a TE. It’s not like you have a great deep WR core. Cut one of those lesser guys, and keep a TE. Especially if the TE is the better football player.
