More Camp Thoughts For a Thursday…

| August 3rd, 2017

Yesterday was an exceedingly positive day coming out of camp. But all that really matters is how many times the cart comes out.

  • Adam Jahns does a nice job breaking down the drama surrounding Kevin White in these early days of Bourbonnais. For my money, WR coach Zach Azzanni made a major mistake here. Why is a position coach calling out a player, insinuating he’s lost confidence, on the second day of padded practice? Why is John Fox allowing a first-year position coach to create a storyline that doesn’t actually exist? It’ll be surprising if Azzanni is so forthcoming moving forward.
  • Of course, Adam Hoge makes the exact opposite argument for WGN. With White being Wednesday’s star, Hoge believes Azzanni may be “pushing the right buttons.”
  • Amazing how hung-up on the quarterback pecking order fans seem to be. Let me clear something up. Mark Sanchez can’t play any more. If he’s on this roster in September – and he shouldn’t be – it’ll be in a break-glass-for-emergency/mentor role. Why wouldn’t Sanchez make my final 53? Because if you need him in October, he’ll be there, sitting at a bus station in Naperville, checking his cell phone repeatedly.

More practice today!

Not sure how the decision was made that Sanchez can’t play anymore… I’ll wait for the first time I see him in a game in a Bears uniform.

You may be perfectly right, Jeff, in that he won’t make the team. So who is #3… Shaw?

It strikes me as imprudent to go into a season with two or three quarterbacks that barely have a season’s worth of NFL games between them.

    • DaBearsBlog

The 1-2 is Glennon/Tru. If the Bears need to go beyond that, the season is over anyway.

      • SC Dave

So what exactly are you suggesting? Shaw?

Do you anticipate trying to find another vet later?

        • Bender McLugh

would it be that odd going into the season with only 2, stashing Sanchez on the PS or even Shaw on PS? I could see that happening

          • CanadaBear
          • Bender McLugh

ahh okay. as I typed that I thought “maybe he can’t be….” but I’m clueless about how PS works.

          • CanadaBear

Me too. I can remember some stuff but then I fuck up how I remember it. Gotta love being an old fart!

          • Irish Sweetness

It’s just like the HoF, Bender ….

          • Scharfinator

I’m confused why he can’t be. Are the 4 slots for >2 accrued seasons already taken?

EDIT: Just kidding, reading comprehension has never been my strong suit.

      • Elect A Clown. Expect A Circus

Here is the flaw in your logic.

If Trub is #2, then he theoretically could be going into Atlanta game if Glennon breaks his arm in the first offensive series against the falcons. so if Trub is #2 in week 1 he might as well be competing for starting job in the training camp instead of running with 3rd stringers.

They don’t want to Trub to see the field early. This is why Sanchez will make the roster.

        • Johnnywad

And then we’re to presume Sanchez won’t break his on the next series? It’s unknowable and probably doesn’t carry much weight. I don’t think NFL administrations see it that way at all.

Whomever the QB is that gives them the second best chance at winning a given game will be the #2.

        • Irish Sweetness

Also, the Bears have ALREADY said Mitch is #3. Anyone who thinks we signed Sanchez just to whisper things into Mitchell’s ears during pre-season….

      • BearDown100393

Connor Shaw wins the QB job.

        • SC Dave

Fales would, but he doin’ that shit for Miami!

        • Irish Sweetness

He’ll be safely stashed on the PS. We should have 4 QBS. Sweet,.

  • Corporal Clott

Why is the Bears WR position coach some dude that looks like he never played the position and certainly doesn’t come with any notable experience as an ex-player? Just sayin.

On a more serious note, it’s kinda surprising NFL coaching staffs aren’t loaded with ex NFL players.

    • SC Dave

Good players don’t necessarily make good coaches; see Singletary, Mike.

      • Johnnywad

Truth. I’d sooner have a a super smart coach that was possibly good enough to play some small college ball. Good education and not much CTE.

      • BearDown100393

        At least Mike was interesting.

    • CanadaBear

If the player has made a lot of money, why would he subject himself to the long hours and relatively speaking low pay of coaching? Not to mention the constant moving from one franchise to another. Tough life and it doesn’t pay that great until you get up the ladder a little ways.

  • Corporal Clott

    Who is Zach Azzanni?

    http://www.knoxnews.com/story/sports/college/university-of-tennessee/football/2017/02/23/uts-zach-azzanni-chicago-bears-job-offer-hell-yeah-shocked/98293018/

“UT’s Zach Azzanni on Chicago Bears job offer: ‘Hell yeah, I was shocked'”

    • SC Dave

Azzanni: “me and him watched …”

I hope his coaching is better than his grammar.

      • CanadaBear

That’s the last thing that bothers me about this story.

    • SC Dave

      Oh, and this little gem:

Reporter: “Did you take exception to the film story?”
      White: “What story?”

      Channeling a little Jimmy Mac?

      • Irish Sweetness

        I wish.

  • Bender McLugh

I agree with Hoge over Jahns on Zach Anansi Boys Azzanni. The WRs are all fired up and they credit him. That says alot…..for practice.

    • Bender McLugh

We’ll see if this will translate to the games

  • Elect A Clown. Expect A Circus

Alshon out since Sunday. It is the shoulder this time (a first for him if i remember correctly). Hammies will show up later in the season

Looks like Alshon Jeffery (shoulder) isn’t practicing again today. #Eagles are in full pads and tackling periods are scheduled.

    • I wonder if he still trains with Bmarsh in florida?
I wager he doesn’t. Bmarsh might’ve been the best thing for him, a mentor to motivate him.

      • SC Dave

Agreed. On the other hand, on this blog you can expect any report of him not playing, and none if he dominates.

I suppose I’ll have to step up if/when the latter comes about.

  • Bender McLugh

Si has a good piece today about Pace & Trubs.

    From the article:
But the truth is, for how the Bears were criticized, and the Eagles took some heat last year, a trend rooted in common sense may well be emerging. Would anyone argue there’s a price too high to get it right at quarterback?

“I do think it could easily become a trend,” Pace said. “It’s just too important of a position, and you can increase your odds of success doing it this way.”

it’s the first story on si.com right now

    • Bender McLugh

what it doesn’t mean, in my opinion, is shovingTrubs into the starting position this year. But I also don’t get the sense that the team has this mindset, it’s only the fans like Jeff that do, and I can’t blame him or anyone else for wanting it. Personally I’d rather see him sit.

      • CanadaBear

Good stuff! I think Glennon will be OK. Not great but OK. I see no reason to throw MT in the mix until he’s ready. Pretty sure the coaches have a better handle on that than me. Although that new WR coach seems to share a trait with the old White Sox mgr (Bevington), a little fast and loose with the truth.

    • Excellent article. No one indeed remembers Walsh costing the Cowboys a 1st even though they drafted Aikmen. However, I think they were still playing with house money from that ultimate trade rape with the Vikes.

The Iggles traded up TWICE for Wentz, and that was after paying Bradford and what’s his name big time.

two mid rounders (one which we got back) isn’t that expensive in comparison.

I do think the trend will continue mostly because the new rook wage scale allows for a team to pay a high-end “bridge” QB AND a rook.

The days of Purple Drank automatically becoming the highest paid player as a QB rook are over.

And look at last yr with the Texans. They gambled on OZ and lost big-time.
It would make more sense going forward if teams gamble on an Oz/Glennon/Bradford/JimmyG type AND a rook QB instead of just going all-in on one QB and crossing their fingers.

Skins kinda did that too with RG3 and Cousins.

In the end, Trub will either be good or not.

And if he is, Glennon and that mid-rounder will be a forgotten footnote like Walsh.

      • SC Dave

Excellent analysis. Similarly, if GLENNON becomes the franchise, no one (well, maybe MB) will give a fuck we went for a backup plan.

Really, there is no greater opportunity in sports history than to become a superstar as CHICAGO BEARS QB.

The (second) oldest franchise has never had one.

        • I also contend that Pace had a lil buyer’s remorse, or more specifically, non-buyers remorse.
He wanted Mariotta and Wentz, and both are arching in the right direction.
He probably didn’t want to go through that again, pining for ‘the one that got away’.

      • BerwynBomber

The Iggles, figuratively, had to jump a river to get to Wentz. We had to jump a puddle to Trisky (and it’s debatable whether we even needed to jump it).

        Hence why PHI paid more.

Though by later dealing Bradford they pretty much broke even in terms of picks.

    • Irish Sweetness

Always said it, on a billion dollar team, you need more than one QB.

  • BerwynBomber
    • Johnnywad

Suppose that’s ankle related for Long?

      • SC Dave

        Shoulder, i would bet

  • BearDown100393

    Jay Cutler, Dolphin?

    • SC Dave

Why would Miami do that? They have…

      DAVID FALES!!!

    • Johnnywad

      Mike Glennon, Dolphin?

    • Did Tannehill get eboli?

      • BearDown100393

        Tannehill hit the deck.

  • Bender McLugh
  • Bender McLugh

GP & MB, you know you want one…..

Uh the pic. What am I missing?

    • Bender McLugh

That’s the WR coach Azzanni I believe

Favorite nugget from this year’s WHY YOUR TEAM SUCKS: THE CHICAGO BEARS

“Matt Barkley currently has more career receiving touchdowns than Kevin White.”

    • BearDown100393

      Montana-Young. Hoyer-Barkley.

      The legacy continues.

      • SC Dave

I was just thinking about that with the Brady 40th bday knob slobbing.

How fucking lucky have tommy and belicheat been?

        Montana-Young
        Favre-Rodgers
        Manning-Luck
        Brady-Brady

        The rest of the league?

        I suppose
        Brees-Brees

Being a Bears fan is hard sometimes, though we have plenty of company

    • My 9er friend sent me a meme with John Lynch standing over a bear and it read:

“when you hit a team so hard, they feel it 20 yrs later”

      • SC Dave

The irony of that statement will become apparent to your friend when twenty years later, they will not have beaten us

    • SC Dave

You missed my post earlier. I’m hurt, Al.

      • AlbertInTucson

Busy week at the old day job.

    • BuddhaJoe

The Jets one today was spectacularly brutal.

  • Malice Halice

Come on Buddha get a INT

    • BuddhaJoe

Uhh, I’ve been drinking, not sure I’m doing anything tonight.

  • SC Dave

Oh for God’s FUCKING sake… a movie about the Menendez brothers…

    Profit has no borders

  • SC Dave

Just watched a pass, and know at least a part of why Gabbert is 9-31 in the NFL

    • Bender McLugh

because he’s on his 8th OC? I keed, but that is kinda ridiculous to do that to QBs.

  • SC Dave

Wankers showing rookie yards over the years. Fuck that… Howard could have been #1 ever with 16 games. Tho besting Dickerson would have been tough. But #2 easily.

But its better this way long term.

Jordan wants to be Walter. And he has the PERFECT first name to be the man in Chicago.

The bridge. There was Walter. And Michael. Will the next be Jordan?

  • SC Dave

    You know what’s awesome?

Jerrah Jones will join Papa Bear in the HOF.

(Goddamnit, “M”HBP, at least acknowledge an apprentice troll!)

    • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

sorry on a road trip to portland or. My Brother is getting married this weekend then i am driving down the coast next week. just got to Portland tonight so haven’t seen any trolling.

  • BearDown100393

Jay wants starter money to go to Miami.

    • Isn’t he under contract with Fox already?

Also, considering he would start, not too much of a surprise.

He’d likely get the same deal as like Glennon or if it’s just a purely 1yr rental, like $10M.

      • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

My guess is that he has an out on his contract with fox

        • Irish Sweetness

He’s EXPECTING to get out … dude’s a kid. Tom Brady is 40.

    • Malice Halice

I’m praying he gets picked up! I NEED the validation that he truelly sucks. He basically average a fumble/INT a game or atleast every other game. To this day I have no fuckin clue y I was a cutler fan up till last year.

  • I think Sanchez makes the team because he’s the coach preparing Trubisky while the actual coaches prepare Glennon.

    • Irish Sweetness

I think Sanchez makes the team because he’s the backup for Gummo … as well as your reason.

If they say Trubs isn’t ready … then you can’t send him in just because Gummo goes down.

  • Irish Sweetness

“Why is a position coach calling out a player?”

Ed Zachary, as MB would say.
Dana White does this to his division champs, but he’s a coke-head and a very wealthy man who doesn’t give a f–k.

Who the f__k is Zach Azzanni?? And as Jefe says, why is Foxy letting that slide?

    • SC Dave

Maybe because his GM told him to?

Edit: I’m just fuckin with you, Irish

  • Irish Sweetness

Twice-champ Paulie Malinaggi quits McGregor’s training camp because he got pushed over. That’s a hard man.

  • Dirty stained Sanchez stache

Trade me to Miami for a 3rd rounder and move Mitch The Bitch to QB 2.

  • BearDown100393

    Trade Giraffe?!
