Four Thoughts on the Cutler Trade Leak

| February 22nd, 2017

Took the evening to sleep on Jeff Darlington’s news break that the Bears have opened discussions around the league about trading their starting quarterback of the last eight seasons. Here are three thoughts.

  • The last line of Darlington’s story is wrong: “Ultimately, the Bears have now proven willing to move on from Cutler without a replacement in place.” I don’t think this is the case at all. I believe Cutler’s fate in Chicago was sealed by Brian Hoyer’s efficiently unspectacular mid-season performances and if Hoyer had not gotten hurt, Cutler was never getting back on the field. The Bears are confident BH will be back (and probably starting in September) should they venture into the rookie pool for a QB.
  • 2010-2013 and 2015. Look at those seasons for Cutler. Production was not a problem. Injuries were. Much of the current Cutler hatred is wrapped up in the travesty that was the 2014 season. For some reason, Cutler is the only person who has paid a long-term price for a year where the Bears had an historically-awful defense and a head coach with his head 3 feet below water.
  • Best spot for Jay? Houston. Worst spot for Jay? The Jets. Where will he end up? I’m betting the latter.
  • This now guarantees the Bears will get someone young for the QB position. Does that mean first round? Second round? Third round? Jimmy Garoppolo? Who knows. But someone is coming into the building with the potential to be the future at the position.

Who’s first to offer something good?

    • http://www.dabearsbeat.com/ Johnathan Wood

There’s a lot more available than typical this offseason. Normally Cutler would be the best QB on the market by a mile. But now there’s potentially Taylor and Kaepernick, two established starters who are younger and have less injury history, plus Jimmy G available in trade, and likely Tony Romo gets cut.

It’s rare for such a solid crop of veteran QBs to be available all in one offseason, and that really dampens Cutler’s value. I don’t think they’ll get much for him.

      • SC Dave

Agreed. I just don’t want us using a 1st round pick on a QB. I fixed my post.

        • http://www.dabearsbeat.com/ Johnathan Wood

That’s where most of the studs are drafted. Teams can find starters outside of round 1, but most of the top QBs were round 1 draft picks (obvious exceptions of Brady, Wilson, Carr; I count Brees as a 1 because his pick would be in 1st round today). Luck, Cam, Mariota, Stafford, Ryan, Rodgers, Ben, Rivers… all rd 1 picks (and mostly high rd 1).

If they identify their guy, grab him at #3. I have zero problems with that.

          • MB30SD

You did an entire Fucking post using somewhat empirical evidence that there ISN’T that guy in this draft.

Data, you are killing me here

          • http://www.dabearsbeat.com/ Johnathan Wood

I also emphasized that was one approach and not intended to be all-encompassing.

Personally, I haven’t done intense film study on any of them, but from what I’ve seen of game action the only one I’d be willing to take a chance on that high is Watson.

I personally would rather roll the dice on Jimmy G. But if Pace identifies his guy, I have no problem with him spending the #3 pick on him.

Pace just better be damn sure, because GMs who draft a QB top 5 and miss typically don’t get a 2nd chance (like, ever. Unlike coaches, GMs typically don’t get a 2nd chance at the job after being fired).

          • MB30SD

yep, I agree with all that. I’ve watched watson in at least 10 games over the last 2 years (clemson has kinda been my college team since the danny ford days), and he’s the only kid who can stand up and go big consistently under the brightest college lights there are.

That said, his game isn’t complete and if pace buckles to the pressure of ‘having’ to find a QB now and takes him @ 3, I think he loses his job because of it… and rightly so.

No secret that I think the MUCH better plan is to fix everything else this year (especially the D backfield) and then get your guy in a MUCH stronger draft next year.

I’d be ok taking a shot on tyrod or jimmy IFF the price is right.

          • Bender McLugh

yuuuuup. but still can’t shake the feeling dammit all, that they’ll draft Watson.

            “smdh”, as you say

          • MB30SD

            um, that’s “smfh”

if that happens I will fucking be pissed… and I think watson might actually be a tyrod taylor-level player in the NFL (if he stays alive that long). I just really don’t want a QB this year, it’s a desperation and preasure move, plainly and simply. We still have zero secondary, why would we waste a #3 on a QB when we don’t have a D to help him, AND it’s a shitty draft class.

Just roll with the 3 we have, fix the D, patch O gaps (TE, OT, WR) and then get your guy next year. Pretty fucking simple in my mind.

          • MB30SD

just realized I already said all that above. hahahaha

I’m a broken fucking record. “smfh”

          • Bender McLugh

agreed, you are a broken record lol

          • MB30SD

that hurt. I have feelings too

          • Governerd

Got my master’s at Clemson in ’06 and love Deshaun, he elevated the Tigers. I was skeptical about him in the NFL, but he has natural talent, works his ass off, and you couldn’t ask for a better young man off the field. If they don’t find their qb with Tyrod or Jimmy, either of which I’m ok with as long as they don’t mortgage the farm to get, I say take him at #3. I think he will work hard to prove he isn’t a bust and will elevate the entire draft class by setting an example.

          • MB30SD

100% man, that’s the feeling I got from him and from the few things I watched/read on him. That’s not my issue with him AT ALL.

My singular issue with him is that he gets crushed in college with his style of play (I mean just watch the Nat Champ game), he WILL die on the field in the NFL doing that.

I’ve been calling him RG IV because he feels like the same kind of player and sound eerily similar coming out of college. It’s ALL about can he augment his style of play to work in the NFL and not die?

          • Governerd

He needs to sit on the bench for a year (and beef up a little, too), if it takes him more than that to get it, I’ll be surprised. If there was someone special at defense there I wouldn’t be opposed to that either, but most say Garrett will be gone and I can’t get excited about Jonathan Allen and I think Watson’s potential is as good or better than any of the other names I’m hearing bandied about. It sure would be nice to see a franchise qb in navy blue and burnt orange.

          • MB30SD

nah, hooker/adams/thomas are all grade-A, blue chippers man. any of those three will come in and instantly elevate that unit massively. And if they stay healthy, all ‘experts’ say that any one of those three are franchise 10-year type players.

They’re comparing the two FSs to berry/thomas… that’s ridiculous praise. And to have TWO guys talked about like that in one draft… at the position we haven’t at all addressed in over 10 years… and to be in a spot to pick either one of them is fucking ridiculous and I just feel that if we pass on that pace is a fool who’s bowing to the pressures of having to pick a QB for the sake of it.

We have 3 potential QBs on the roster (or could have), we have guys on the Dline who are supposed to step up (if they can stay healthy), but we’ve got ZERO in the Dbackfield… and have had zero there for a decade.

Seems pretty fucking 1 + 2 = 3 to me, but what the fuck to I know.

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Forget-me-Naught!(Butch)

But is it his bulk (or lack thereof) or STYLE of play?

For years ppl were waiting for Vick to protect himself, but he just never got it through his head.

Meanwhile, Wilson, who is not exactly 6’4 220, shows a lot of awareness about how to take sacks and when too slide.

            IMO, it’s instinctual.

          • Irish Sweetness

The knock on Watson is he doesn’t read the whole field, right? And he’s a slightly built scat-QB ? Pass.

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Forget-me-Naught!(Butch)

Don’t think your criteria was all-encompassing, but it did REINFORCE the narrative that this year’s top QBs are highly questionable.

This could be the 2011 draft all over again (but without the Cam) in which Locker went 8th, Gabbert 10th, Ponder 12th (and that’s not even counting QBs outside the 1st like Mallet).

A lot of GMs were “sold” on them. Don’t think any are still around.

          • Irish Sweetness

Is Watson the guy that’s only been reading half the field?

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Forget-me-Naught!(Butch)

No one throws to both sides simultaneously anyways.

          • leftcoastdave

Do a cost/benefit analysis on the day one guys vs the Saturday guys. In this draft, the risk of the day one guys is way too high while the potential reward from a Saturday guy worth the price.

          • http://www.dabearsbeat.com/ Johnathan Wood

From 2011-15 there were 2 starters drafted on day 3. TWO. (3 if you count Trevor Siemian, but he’s not starting for long, IMO).

The odds of hitting there are so low they’re almost not worth talking about.

          • Bender McLugh

I can’t get away from the sense that they will draft Watson, for good or bad.

          • willbest

I am currently liking Kizer the best of the top 3. But I am sure I will change my mind on that another half dozen times between now and end of April.

          • MB30SD

you are insane. that proves it

          • AlbertInTucson

My negative position on Kizer has been pretty well-established and neither his being benched against Stanford nor his sub-20 QBR performance vs USC would incline me to change said position.

          • Irish Sweetness

I wouldn’t puke if we drafted him. He has lots of upside.
If the penny drops for him …

But trading down or drafting a defender are my 1 and 2 …

          • MB30SD

            uhhhhggggg

        • madscout12

I’m more in the camp that I want to shield any kid from the clusterfuck that is the Chicago media. Cutty is/was the only decent QB we’ve had for the better part of 2 decades. He has been murdered ever since 2010 when the organization hasn’t exactly been a model of drafting and free agency success…to speak nothing of coordinator and coaching hires.

I don’t want a 1st rounder to have to come in and be forced to produce or hang. And the Chicago media would make sure that guy in the 1st would start and succeed or hang right away.

          • SC Dave

Agree with all this. And the fans are worse than the media.

      • Irish Sweetness

        Kaep is very interesting.

      • Irish Sweetness

Exactly why we should keep him around and off-load him when the first QB goes down in another city. When they’re REALLY desperate, they’ll cough up a first.

    • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Forget-me-Naught!(Butch)

Pretty sure Conte got run out of town while meatheads were threatening his life on social media.

I would say that was worse than how Jay got treated.

That’s why when he pick-6ed Cargo, Conte glided to the endzone shouting “Fuck you Chicago!”

It was probably the highlight of his life, and the low life of Cutler’s.

Couldn’t have been staged any more perfectly by Hollywood itself.

  • http://www.dabearsbeat.com/ Johnathan Wood

Never turned into the stud people were hoping for when the Bears first traded for him, but wasn’t terrible either. A good, solid QB who has had 10 year run as a solid starter.

Like with Bears/Lovie or Bulls/Thibs, they have a guy who’s good but not great and had his chances, and now it’s time to move on.

There’s zero guarantee the next guy will be better, or even as good, but you still have to try. You can’t hang on to solid forever simply because you could have it worse, and the time is right to try and find the young guy who can grow with this young roster.

Here’s hoping they get it right, because that would make for a very fun next 5 or so years.

    • SC Dave

“There’s zero guarantee the next guy will be better, or even as good, but you still have to try.”

      Amen.

      • http://www.dabearsbeat.com/ Johnathan Wood

I just hope they don’t end up with the QB equivalent of Trestman or Hoiberg.

        • MB30SD

          We’re the bears data

          • http://www.dabearsbeat.com/ Johnathan Wood

history does not always repeat itself. Completely different people making this decision than have ever made the QB decision for them before. You never know.

          • MB30SD

oh, I have my fingers crossed my man… but history portends trends, no? Especially when that history is so long and so consistent.

I’m really hoping for a statistical anomaly in the next 2 years for us.

          • http://www.dabearsbeat.com/ Johnathan Wood

so you think the next QB the Packers take will be awesome just because the last 2 have worked out? Odds of that are no different than Bears now, IMO. New people making decisions.

          • Irish Sweetness

            Actually, yes ….

          • Irish Sweetness

Yup. We have Howard. Stick some tackles on that line and beef the D.

Watching the Bears with Cutler was stressful because you knew that you could win any game. Then, as an educated fan, i’d watch the overall quality determine the outcome of the game and the QB remain the focus. It has been frustrating to deal with a lot of you to say the least. Borderline Yahoo/Bears Facebook page-esque type bullshit at times.

With that being said this past season with a D that still needs so many pieces but still had some talent and an O that was missing pieces at TE, WR and QB when Cutler was hurt again it was strangely peaceful knowing we didn’t have a fucking chance. I enjoyed my sundays again.

The thing is, I don’t want to enjoy my fucking sundays (lol, you know what i mean). I want the Bears to win and win consistently. For me, putting Hoyer in at QB this coming season is a total admission that this team doesn’t want to win but wants to win enough to keep the seats filled and the hot dogs and shitty beer selling. So, i’ll put up with another year of calm sundays with no real hope of winning as long as the bears org continues it’s very recent trend of attempting to get better. Bring in real FA pieces this offseason. Take no brainer, needs based picks at the top of the draft and look for some exciting prospects in rds 4 and 5.

It’s the end of an era. The era of actually having talent at QB. Here’s to hoping we find more talent soon.

    • http://www.upitpuppet.com/ evantonio

      talent led to expectations.

      expectations led to disappointment.

      disappointment led to anger.

      anger led to apathy.

apathy led to no longer having an excuse to turn down the wife’s Sunday plans.

and that, my friend, was the biggest tragedy of all.

      • MB30SD

        uhhhhhhggggg… wife’s sunday plans.

Fucken A I’m glad I don’t have to do that shit any more…. and the banging 20 somethings in the ass almost erra night. But yeah, sunday plans too.

  • BearDown100393

The best QB for the Chicago Bears is Jay Cutler.
The best team for Jay Cutler is the Chicago Bears.
He was solid in 2015. Use that as the measuring stick versus the options.

    • leftcoastdave

Agree. It won’t happen, but I’d like to see them go into camp with Cutty, Hoyer, Barkley and someone picked on Saturday. Let that shake out as it will. I like Barkley too much for him to not be in the mix. Too bad he can’t schedule his own off season workouts with Meridith teaching Bellamy how to catch the ball. Polish them stones.

      • http://www.dabearsbeat.com/ Johnathan Wood

“someone picked on Saturday” has less than a 10% chance of becoming a starter, based on recent history.

At that point you’re just rolling with what you had going into last year, which isn’t acceptable.

        • leftcoastdave

Better to roll with that than shoot craps with a day one or two pick. Days one and two will give us players at other positions with a greater certainty of having an impact on the field. See, ie., Howard, Floyd, Whitehair, Long, Goldman. That is why I am all in on trading out of the three spot for numbers.

          • Bender McLugh

I would be all about trading down, IF it meant getting a player the quality of Hooker/Thomas. No one has said yet if that’s possible.

          • MB30SD

like I say to Irish all the time… and I want to win the $400M lottery lcd.

Gotta be available maings, you can want it all you want. It’s not a viable strategy until someone offers it up. Not saying it’s not going to happen, but planning on it and pitching it as your strategy of choice seems ill advised.

so if no one comes calling offering a pot of gold for our #3, what do you do?

          • leftcoastdave

Take the best monster DE on the board. But there is always someone wanting that #3 and it’s worth at least a twofer.

          • MB30SD

dude, we have DEs man… we got one @ #7 last year. We have ZEEEROOOOO DBs dude. We need a DB man.

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Forget-me-Naught!(Butch)

Does Hooker’s thin frame and inj history concern you?

It gives me pause. Ppl compare him to Ed Reed, but Ed Reed was fucking ripped.

I like Hooker a lot more than Adams too. Fack.

          • Irish Sweetness

What was that safety I posted on here (Mayock’s fave player) – Budda Baker? You see him?

          • MB30SD

Two of the top 10 players will be available at 3. Take one a themselves and call it a wrap baby

          • Irish Sweetness

This. Last year’s draft was good. Another one of those with higher picks … sweetness.

        • Sauron’s right eyeball

Due to the fact that 90% of the quarterbacks teams draft are for the backup role, practice squad or flyer type picks, I’m not surprised.

    • SC Dave

Says the guy who thought last year’s team would go 16-0

      • BearDown100393

A few injuries ruined that opportunity. Next season as Alshon predicts, Super Bowl.

        • Zap Rowsdower (GP)

it’s gonna make us forget the 85 Bears it will be so dominant

  • Sahr Gborie

First. He still can refuse to go to the team we trade him to since has no signing bonus left. Lets get what we can for him and close the door on this chapter of Bears QB purgatory.

    • willbest

He can refuse if he retires. And obviously, a team doesn’t want a disgruntled employee, but beyond that he has to play wherever he is traded.

      • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Forget-me-Naught!(Butch)

Yeah, Cutler has no leverage besides “I retire” so he’d be giving up at least $5M/yr.

Let’s say worst case scenario for him is the Browns.

Browns give us a 5th. Cutler says “no thanks”. Now what? Nothing really.

Bears could hold him till the very last day possible when every team already drafted or signed their QB, and he’s assed out.

More likely Cutler sucks it up. Plays a yr for the Browns with that contract while the Browns groom whomever.

After a one yr audition, Cutler can cut bait, or become a backup, his inevitable destination.

  • willbest

“I don’t think this is the case at all. I believe Cutler’s fate in
Chicago was sealed by Brian Hoyer’s efficiently unspectacular mid-season
performances and if Hoyer had not gotten hurt, Cutler was never getting
    back on the field”

This is nonsensical. Even if you are committed to moving on from Cutler it is both in his interest and Pace’s for him to get healthy and put on 2-3 games to end the season. Why? Because a benched Cutler is a cut Cutler and a cut Cutler isn’t making $15 million next year. And a cut Cutler gives the Bears nothing. No comp picks, nothing in trade, etc.

    • BerwynBomber

NFL coaches aren’t in the habit of making decisions merely to showcase guys for potential trades. It ain’t baseball. Moreover, in the case of guy like Cutler, there is no guarantee he doesn’t come in and crap the bed and drive down his value.

What is debatable is whether Cutler would have seen the field if the team continued to come up short under Hoyer. Fox may have felt the pressure to turn back to Jay just as he turned back to him once Hoyer went down.

      • willbest

Cutler is a competitor he will think he can salvage something. Pace has nothing to lose because he couldn’t trade him anyway. Now if they had put him on IR in week 3 with a torn ligament in his throwing hand that might have been different. But they plodded him along week to week. The whole thing was very weird in retrospect. It clearly played out as the worst course of action for the Bears long term interests. But it also didn’t make a whole lot of sense for their in season interests as well.

        • BerwynBomber

Hoyer’s injury indeed led to some awkwardness. What was Cutty’s statement to the press (I’m paraphrasing here)? “well, he has to turn to me now.” (And btw, I didn’t take that as snarky, just Jay recognizing the reality of the situation.)

What I found objectionable was the Bears refusal to throw Fales on the field the last game or two once Pickles was concussed near the end of ’14. Mind, Fales probably sucks and might be coaching HS next year, but it seemed the ideal time to see what you had on the end of the bench.

          • willbest

I guess Fales was just awful in practice so there was no point in putting him in the field to get hit. That is the only explanation I have for it.

But the thing with Jay he might have been benched for Hoyer, but he wasn’t even practicing. So they basically had him on the roster while Barkley ran the offense with the 2s. That is a pretty big inconvenience for Fox in order for Cutler/Pace to save his franchise value. And it also implies that Fox wasn’t 100% in control of who plays.

          • Irish Sweetness

“I guess Fales was just awful in practice”

The Bears haven’t kept this kid around because he’s awful. They signed him TWICE.

          • Huge Bears Penis

            desperation.

        • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Forget-me-Naught!(Butch)

But remember there was talk of Cutler playing THE VERY NEXT WEEK after his injury.

To go from “probable” or “questionable” to “IR” would’ve been a stretch (though under Fox, not unprecedented).

It was the worst case scenario in that Hoyer got injured, and the Bears couldn’t evaluate him further.

It was made even worse by Shaw also being out, and not being able to evaluate him.

On the plus side, Barkley was evaluated, but he was never in Pace’s plan (basically the 4rth QB).

I’m rather optimistic going forward. My biggest question mark was Birdcage, and thus far he has made Shaw, Hoyer and Barkley look better than expected.

With one NOTABLE exception, of course.

    • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Forget-me-Naught!(Butch)

And WHO was the first on this board to state Cutler was benched for Hoyer?

      Moi.

Welcome aboard, Jeff! A few months late, but you just became sober, so I’ll let it slide.

      • willbest

If Cutler was really benched it means Fox doesn’t control his players. Pace stepped in and said slow walk the recovery. Because the HC managing his own players would have had Cutler slinging balls with the 2s.

        • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Forget-me-Naught!(Butch)

Personally I think Fox is the one who wants Hoyer more than Pace.

Remember, Pace was trying for Mariotta, and didn’t exactly pay top cash for Hoyer.

It makes perfect sense. If your job was on the line, who would you want –

A reliable but unremarkable employee, or some coke fueled wild card that can make or cost your company millions?

Pace is both Cutler and Hoyer proof.

          Fox is not.

          • Irish Sweetness

I can’t believe that Fox would want a guy who can’t throw the fucking ball out of his way.

Honestly, ifanyone is even considering Hoyer as a QB under center for the Bears …. I don’t know what else to say.

Is there anyone here – over 40 – who wants Hoyer on the roster? I think this is a generational thing.

  • willbest

“Nor would I. Especially if his only option to start ends up being in Jersey with the Jets.” – Jeff

I am going to take the bottom of the barrel lowest of the low on Cutler. A single season $8 million contract. You really think he retires? I guess it could be an ego blow. I know he has a lot, generational wealth if he has been smart, but that is still a lot to leave on the table.

    • MB30SD

      I think he, doooooooon’tttt caaaaaarrrreeee!

I’d fucking retire and ride off into the $100M sunset. fuck more concussions, torn ligaments, hassles, hate, etc…

    • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Forget-me-Naught!(Butch)

The question about Cutler retiring is whether he really does love football.

To Jay’s credit, he seems like a competitor, and I never questioned his (only his brain), but $100M, a broken brain and body can make anyone contemplate chilling in a Jacuzzi in Cali.

  • BerwynBomber

Cutler’s fate was also sealed by Gase’s leaving, the recent Tampa game and his injury. Those three things, along with Hoyer’s string of 300 yard/non-TO games, were the final straws. (Personally, I don’t think the MNF game against the Iggles helped him much either — the contrast between him and Wentz was a stark reminder of no QB development plan.)

Remember too that Pace was shopping Cutler when he first took the job. As Biggs reported late this year, neither Pace, Fox or even Gase were particular enamored with Cutty upon their arrival.

    • http://www.dabearsbeat.com/ Johnathan Wood

Cutler was better than Wentz last year. And that was Cutler’s worst year possibly of his career.

It’s more about that the Eagles are growing with Wentz while the Bears need that young guy to grow with as well. That way, when they’re ready to contend, the QB will be too (ideally).

      • BerwynBomber

As up and down as Cutler could be in the course of a season, he was surprisingly consistent year-to-year in terms of his traditional passer rating. If you look at a guy like Stafford, he has had higher peaks and lower valleys than Cutler, albeit Stafford seems to be trending upward at this point in his career.

P.S. I think Wentz will be fine. Liked what I saw. I suppose there is a chance he turns into the next Bortles, but I think he will eventually be a solid top ten guy.

        • willbest

Which is odd because his QBR is all over the map year to year.

          2013- PR 89, QBR 67
          2014 – PR 88, QBR 52
          2015 – PR 92, QBR 60

          • http://www.dabearsbeat.com/ Johnathan Wood

QBR is so weird. Heavily weights 4th quarter performance in close games.

          • BerwynBomber

“Cutler was better than Wentz last year.”

Btw, that’s debatable but Cutler’s sample size was too small for either opinion to be conclusive.

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Forget-me-Naught!(Butch)

Also doesn’t take in to account riding pine or being hurt most of the season.

    • willbest

Nor should they have been. But a good GM/HC/OC is pragmatic.

And Hoyer also showed an ability to collapse in the RZ. So he is by no means some gold standard of the Birdcage offense. Barkley had 3 solid games. Hoyer had 4. And Hoyer was struggling against GB’s shitty defense before he went down for the season, so who knows if he would have gone the Barkley route.

      • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Forget-me-Naught!(Butch)

TDs stalled in the redzone, but that was for a lot of reasons (including drops, penalties, etc).

Also, Birdcage was still kinda getting his feet wet as an OC (I actually think Birdcage started hitting his stride late with Barkley).

Also, most importantly, what we DIDN’T see with Hoyer in the redzone were unnecessary sacks to take them out of FG range, strip sacks and INTs to demoralize entire team (see McPhee yelling in Cutler’s face).

That GB game did concern me though. It was really the first bad game Hoyer had with the Bears, and I wanted to see how he’d respond in-game and beyond, but then he got hurt.

That’s why I wouldn’t cry if we got Tyrod or drafted a QB at #3.

I wouldn’t like it, but at least I could understand the rational.

        • willbest

Wouldn’t cry over Tyrod? Surely you jest. Kid had back to back seasons with top 10 QBR. He is a bona fide NFL starter worthy of Rivers money. Hoyer is a $6 million use for a season and discard QB.

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Forget-me-Naught!(Butch)

            It’s not Tyrod I don’t like.

            It’s Fox in that equation.

If they stink with Tyrod, then Fox is dumped, and we go forward, and the new HC inherits a QB, and so the cycle continues.

To me it just makes more sense seeing how this season plays out with Fox and a low-risk efficient bridge and a 2nd rd and beyond intriguing QB prospect.

If they flame out, hit reset, and next year Pace gets to hire his HC, the HC gets his QB, etc etc

That being said, I do think Tyrod is legit, and an argument can be made that having Tyrod next season can entice HC prospects, but I’d much rather start with a clean slate in that ground zero scenario.

          • willbest

What about Hoyer’s history makes you think he is low risk?

Hoyer means Fox isn’t HC in 2018. Running with a Watson means Fox gets his 4 years. But then if Fox isn’t in the playoffs then your cycle repeats anyway.

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Forget-me-Naught!(Butch)

            It’s low risk cuz

            1. He doesn’t cost a draft pick, even a measly 7th. Same can’t be said for other options like Kizer or Jimmy G.

            2. His contract is not going to be onerous. What, maybe $5M/yr with small guarantees? Jimmy G or Tyrod would be MUCH riskier contractually, and if they bomb, Pace is done.

            3. His play in BEARS uni. If I was willing to give Cutler a chance for 6+ years thinking a new OC and solid cast could help him, I’m DEF extending that same courtesy to Hoyer for one more season who has shown he’s not a TO machine and kept them in games.

          • Irish Sweetness

But he’s a chode. At the game of football, he is a chode.

    • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Forget-me-Naught!(Butch)

Hoyer is the main reason. What’s worse, the cuck, or getting fired for the cuck?

Hoyer is exactly the type of QB Fox/Fangio/Birdcage want.

A guy who’ll punch the clock, not make the mistake, and give the team a chance in the 4rth (as opposed to blowouts like with the Bucs).

      To me, it’s totally logical.

Fox was supposed to return the Bears to respectability, and Hoyer is the Del Homme type to do that.

Whether Hoyer (or Fox for that matter) can win a SB is a whole nother issue, but I think we all wanted to reach respectability first after the Trestman debacle.

If Fox and Hoyer both bomb this season, no biggie. No huge contract. Whole new regime (McDaniels?) Draft a true franchise QB in next year’s superiror QB class and continue to build Pace style.

      • willbest

Hoyer makes mistakes. He had a good 3 game run. Why do people pretend his stints around the league don’t matter.

        • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Forget-me-Naught!(Butch)

Same reason ppl kept giving Cutler chances with new regimes/ocs/talent

Cuz they can make a difference.

The sample size for Hoyer was just too small to make any final judgement.

But let’s theoretically say he did continue that pace 300/2/0 over the season…how much does Hoyer go for then?

          • willbest

I am sure somebody would give him Bradford money. His history would preclude Oz money. But the flip side of hoyer’s 300/2/0 was something like 0.6 rushing TDs a game.

          • Huge Bears Penis

            not much… 5 wins tops.

          • Irish Sweetness

let’s say theoretically he did continue like that … not being able to win games because he … y’know … cans’t throw the ball further than 10 yards … if he continued dumping the ball off to the back all season .. well, I think teams would have seen the tape and then snuff that shit out – leaving him with nothing. Think NFL defenses hasn’t seen a bum like Hoyer before?

          • SC Dave

Hoyer is far better than Fales, so there’s that.

        • BerwynBomber

That’s my fear with Hoyer. I can live with his play last year as a bridge guy. Fine by me. More than adequate. But if he starts coughing the ball up … yikes.

I’d still prefer Glennon or McCarron even if they could be worse.

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Forget-me-Naught!(Butch)

That’s why a contingency plan should be in place.

Personally, I wouldn’t mind seeing what Shaw has, or if Pace drafts Kaaya in the 3rd as plan B, so be it.

          • Huge Bears Penis

let me predict Shaw for you. IR. the dude is brittle as hell going back to college.

      • Irish Sweetness

“…and give the team a chance in the 4th …”

But he doesn’t give you a chance in the 4th. He can’t. He’s not a professional passer.

      • TomC

Maybe this is a subtle joke on your part, but Hoyer and Delhomme have the two worst games in NFL playoff history, games in which they turned the ball over 5+ times and could reasonably be said to be wholly personally responsible for their team losing. Not exactly who I want as my “give the team a chance in the 4th” QB.

    • Irish Sweetness

Why are 200 yard non-TO games important? Wins are important. Something Hoyer can’t do, because he can’t throw the ball.

      • BerwynBomber

We weren’t winning with Cutler either. Same difference.

        • Irish Sweetness

Not the same QB though. Jay can make the throws.

We have a chance to win any game with Jay. We have none with Hoyer, unless it’s a bad team and Jordan puts up 130.

          • SC Dave

Cutler is done, so there’s that.

  • Zap Rowsdower (GP)

Jay’s best bet to retire while having a body to do so is to go somewhere where there is an established starter and he can hold the clipboard. He would have to play if the starter goes down, but he could also spend a lot of games on the sidelines and ride down the career.

For that reason, I can see him wanting to go to the Steelers and sit behind Rapey Ben. Ben will almost assuredly go down, and Cutler can play for a few games.

    • willbest

Personally, I would do that. Go make $3 million a year for the next decade as a backup QB. Perhaps have escalators in my contract if I start more than 4 games. But it could be too big of an ego blow to a guy like that.

      • Irish Sweetness

He might have some of his biggest moments like that. Super-sub.

    • BerwynBomber

If he is going that route his home-away-from-home state of TEN might be the best bet. He could help mentor/caddy for Mariota. He and the wife and kids apparently love it there. Hence, nice place to retire. Plus, TEN is on the rise. Who knows, maybe someday he’ll get a ring out of it.

      • willbest

Mariota is a better QB than Cutler. Well, assuming his knee rehabs okay.

        • BerwynBomber

          I was suggest Cutler as Mariota’s back-up.

      • CanadaBear

Would you rather be called the next Jeff George or Ryan Fitzpatrick?

    • BerwynBomber

George. And if you take into account QB stat inflation, he and Cutty were very similar in terms of production/efficiency. Plus, they were both from IN. And both golden arm guys who never quite lived up to expectations.

Fitzpatrick is in neither guy’s class.

      • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Forget-me-Naught!(Butch)

I gotta defend Cutler some here.

If this were the Wizard of Oz, Cutler would be the Scarecrow, no brain, while George would be the Lion, no heart.

        The latter is worse, IMO.

Though both were victims of the “beautiful woman” syndrome.

      • Johnnywad

I have no idea to be honest. I think the NFL in general knows he’s getting cut if they sit tight. I believe he will be scooped up quickly though. I think the reality of his talent and potential interest lies somewhere halfway between your opinion and Waffle’s. I am genuinely interested to see what comes of it all.

        • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Forget-me-Naught!(Butch)

I simply don’t think a team can win a SB with a INJ-TO prone QB.

Eli is the closest comp to Cutler, but at least Eli stays on the field, and has proven clutch.

And even then, there’s rumblings in NY that they may draft a QB in the 1st cuz they too are wearing thin of Eli’s TOs.

Just really hard to win games consistently when your QB is TOs 3 times a game.

That’s the real reason no one is trading for Cutler, or why he’s even hitting the market.

          • Irish Sweetness

“the NFL in general knows he’s getting cut if they sit tight. ”

This is more reason to hold on to him a while before we cut him. Let teams scramble and pick up QBs, put pressure on teams that are waiting. It is kind of a ‘Fuck you’ to Jay as it will leave him with even fewer options, but it also leaves less time for Jay and his new team to acclimate. Some will view it as a little ruthless but who the fuck cares, I would not seeing our GM being a little ruthless.

          • Johnnywad

            Bidness

          • CanadaBear

I don’t see the Bears as tough and ruthless, more like rough and toothless. I think since Jay grew up (stopped being such a d-bag to the media, etc.), George and Sweaty Teddy have been OK with him. Pace and Fox don’t dislike him so I could see an early release by the Beloved.

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Forget-me-Naught!(Butch)

Cousins doesn’t have that 100 yd stare.

  • leftcoastdave

Funny reading how the Jets, Browns and niners are all places for Cutty and hey, why not, he will be cheap. Yea, but not if there is more than one taker. Duh? Hope the Cardinals step up. The NY press will be vicious. Houston would be great but no cap space. I would love to see him take Houston to the Super Bowl.

    • BerwynBomber

I’d be surprised if ARI is in play. They want Palmer to return and Palmer wants to return. Plus, even if they’re looking for a back-up, they might opt to draft a kid this year.

Best bets for Cutty as a starter are: HOU, NYJ, CLE and SF.

BUF and WAS could be WCs. Don’t see DEN if we are to believe the Elway/Cutler reports that surfaced soon after he joined us.

  • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Forget-me-Naught!(Butch)

So, everyone wants to trade DOWN.

But what say ye about trading UP to the #1 to grab Myles Garret?

    http://a.video.nfl.com/films/2016/NFL_NETWORK/show/NFL_TOTAL_ACCESS/POST/6/170216_ta_garrett_best_player_in_draft_775399_700k.mp4

Let’s say it’ll take #3 and our 3rd. Worth it?

    • Irish Sweetness

      No.

We gain by trading down. A lot.

    • willbest

Take Thomas at 3. If Garrett and Thomas go #1 and 2, take Hooker

      • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Forget-me-Naught!(Butch)

That’s exactly how I see it too.

Do the injuries cool you on Hooker though? Kinda make my chub a little less rigid.

Just wondering if anyone was all-in on Garrett.

        He’s getting compared to Peppers.

Personally, I don’t see much difference between him and Thomas, and Clowney seemed much more explosive than Garrett, nvm Peppers.

        • willbest

They were minor weren’t they? And he played through them. That doesn’t bode well for his longevity. But I don’t really care about signing players to long term deals after 30 anyway unless they are QBs

        • MB30SD

He’s 20 man. Non core injuries for a safety. I’d still like him over adams

      • Irish Sweetness

If there is no QB drafted before us, then we’re in a good possie to trade down though ….

      • MB30SD

I’d be shocked. One of those dumpsterfires is going to take a QB… Shit, or even both?!

    • leftcoastdave

I saw talk about Dontari Poe being a target in FA. Put him in the middle and let Hicks and Goldman have at it. That would be a killer front three with backups to rotate in. Besides, the DL is stacked in this draft class so why not go for numbers with the trade down? I’d be happy with a pair of 8’s over one perfect 10, if such a thing exists and stays healthy.

      • willbest

Poe and Berry get to play off each other, and the second the chiefs tag one the other gets to hit FA

        • leftcoastdave

And thus the belief they will tag Berry because he will be worth big bux in the open market.

          • MB30SD

And I’d be very happy if we paid those big bucks. Please pace, make it happen then get Adams or hooker @ 3 and let’s put safety to bed

        • leftcoastdave

          And harder to replace Barry.

      • Irish Sweetness

Yeah, get that line beastly. Now, it’s far from.

His speed is like Floyd’s, quick as a hiccup.

  • BerwynBomber

“DaBearsBlog @dabearsblog What’s odd is evaluating Jay isn’t even hard. Productive, great athlete with serious clutch ability late. Too many INTS. Sketchy health.”

Productive is a stretch. His highest TD total in a season during his 11 year career is 28 (during his otherwise brutal ’14 campaign) and he only threw for 4K yards once.

And I would say good athlete rather than great. Jay always had excellent straight ahead speed but his agility was never all that. (Nothing near the shake-and-bake you get from a Rodgers or Wilson or their Houdini-like pocket navigation — actually early/mid-career Romo had some of that latter quality too.) Nor was he the runaway train like Cam or Prescott outside the pocket.

What Cutler has is the thing you obviously missed (despite claiming that evaluating him was easy): a world-class fastball. Even at 34 he might still have the most zip in the league. The only two who might match him on the Jugs gun would be Newton and Rodgers. But it is a short list.

    • MB30SD

Too bad he’s throwing that zip to the wrong color a lot of the time… Or dropping it on the carpet.

      • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Forget-me-Naught!(Butch)

        Revisionist facts!

      • BerwynBomber

Agreed. Wasn’t breaking down his myriad of flaws — and they go beyond Jeff’s de-emphasized INTs and health — but just providing a little more analysis to the productive and great athlete claims.

The productive thing has always been a big beef of mine as I don’t think Cutler was ever going to become Rodgers or Brady when it came to TOs. But if he would have upped his production, a’la say a Rivers, his TOs wouldn’t have been as lethal.

        • MB30SD

          It was never boring though.

    • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Forget-me-Naught!(Butch)

What’s most impressive about Cutler’s arm is the ease in which he gets so much velocity on it.

With some guys, you see them get set and just throw everything into it.

With Cutler, it’s like he’s throwing it in the backyard, and it spirals 40 yds near the target.

As they, the great ones make it look easy, and he def has a great arm, but needless to say, need more than just an arm to be a great NFL QB.

Can’t just be a one trick pony. It’s like being typecasted.

Tom Sizemore is always Tom Sizemore in every fucking movie.

      • BerwynBomber

Doing some Draft homework. Da faq?

    Mayock on crack?

He ranks Thomas behind Williams and Barnett.

    http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000785722/article/mike-mayocks-2017-nfl-draft-position-rankings

The S rankings are interesting and what I trust Mayock for most.

Obi Meifonitu (or whatever) I heard some things about. Is that Nigerian? He’s 6’4 220 Nigerian S.

    Deum.

    http://www.nfl.com/draft/2017/profiles/obi-melifonwu?id=2558189

Ballhawking Hooker and the Nigerian Hammer back there would be VERY nice.

    • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Forget-me-Naught!(Butch)

Ok so saw some more tape on Obi wan. Not really impressed. Was more impressed by Amos’ tape.

However, if we draft Thomas in the first and don’t get Hooker

Buddha Baker will be a very interesting prospect in the 2nd. He’s essentially Hooker-lite (and I do mean light – 5’10 180). But look at how many “wow” plays he makes.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PoXL6gsuFNs

      • BerwynBomber

He looks better than Hooker to me, but yeah, you worry about size. But you talk about a kid all over the field making every play imaginable …

          • BerwynBomber

Size doesn’t matter when it comes to a few exceptional talents. Otherwise, it is smart to rate when judging a prospect.

          • Malice Halice

            Look at Floyd tho

          • BerwynBomber

Of course, and he could be an exception. As could Baker.

And heck, in regard to QBs, look at Brees and Wilson.

But all these guys are exceptions. Or to put it another way, if you give me the choice between two guys who are by all accounts equal but for size, I’ll take the bigger version.

            It’s the safest bet.

          • MB30SD

          • Irish Sweetness

I believe if we drafted him you would had to have moved to the shittiest part of Jo’Burg and painted a swastika on your sheet metal hut for losing the ‘wager’.

Or was that someone else? I don’t recall a lot of Bosa fans, although he was near the top of most draft boards.

          • MB30SD

I totally thought he would bust out and I made fun of all my chargers buddies when they called his name.

After watching about 5 charges games, I’m that dude’s fan big-time. He’s an almost erra single play changer. For reals. I happily ate crow. Dude was maybe the best D pick of the draft.

He’s not even in the screen, but when the ball is in the air, suddenly #32 comes streaking in like a heat seeking missile. Holy shit, I don’t remember seeing anyone with that closing speed in a while, even at CB.

          He’s like a football magnet.

If Buddha plays behind a stout front 7, he can def make plays, blitz and cover the slot.

          • BerwynBomber

Yeah, he’s something. First time I’d seen him, though I think Maylock was high on him, IIRC.

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Forget-me-Naught!(Butch)

Somewhere else he’s listed as 5’10 192, which is still light, but not crazy under sized.

Honey Badger about the same size, so can work in the NFL if the front 7 aren’t total muppets.

And HoneyBadger fell due to weed concerns.

By all accounts, Buddha is an outstanding character.

Would love him in the 2nd if we do skip on Hooker.

Laremy Tunsil is doing well now. They’re moving him outside I think.

I’d still take Floyd. He was my pick after Zeke. If the Cowboys didn’t take Zeke I think he’d be a Bear. No other team after Dallas needed a back.

And the two top backs last season? Zeke and Jordan. Imagine them on your team – we wouldn’t be talking about QBs right now, it would be the best tackles to take in the first two rounds.

          • SC Dave

He’s def a diff maker in Zona though.

          • BerwynBomber

In his first four years, he has played 13, 13, 14 and 10, so he is basically averaging about 12 games a year, which basically means he misses 25% of every season.

He could turn it around, and it could be just a case of bad luck, but as HBP’s post suggests its something a team would be a little worried about.

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Forget-me-Naught!(Butch)

But I wonder how that compares to starting S across the board.

Safeties in general always seem to get hurt.

          • BerwynBomber

My bet is it is even more concerning when it is happening early in a guy’s career. But no idea how his availability stacks up to every starting S in the league.

          • Irish Sweetness

The tough ones do. Then you have the pussies like Deion Sanders who make “business decisions”.

          • CanadaBear

            DS was a CB.

          • leftcoastdave

Dez King. Could play CB or FS and return. Then again, but for the size Christian McCaffery is one hell of a wild card.

          • BerwynBomber

And ARI pays him a ton of money, right? Isn’t he the highest paid S in the league?

          • MB30SD

            Just watched the vid.

He looks strong. Those ints were terrible throws, but good plays.

            He just looks…. SM… all.

And there has to be a reason he’s not being talked about in the top tier of safeties if he’s so good. Is it just size?

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Forget-me-Naught!(Butch)

            Yeah, it’s just size.

I mean, that tape jumps out at me. I know tape is good when I watch more than once.

            Closing speed. Check.
            Instincts. Check
            Diagnosis plays. Check (jumps routes).
Textbook tackling. Check (won’t thump, but has pop and wraps up)
            Aggressive. Check.
Ballhawk. Check (can tell he gets mad when he doesn’t INT. Expects it)
            Balance. Check.
            Agile. Check.
            Character. Check.

            It’s mostly his size.

The tape of him and Hooker are a lot a like, except Hooker is like 6’0 200 and lankier.

          • MB30SD

At 6′ you can get to 210 – 215+ and not lose speed… Which I think hooker can and will do.

            Nowhere to go at 5’10”

          • MB30SD

I want to see a side by side total breakdown of Adams v hooker.

If we go Thomas @ 3, we should do what it takes to close Baker in the second

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Forget-me-Naught!(Butch)

Adams and Hooker are totally diff safeties though.

            Adams is an all-around SS.

Enforcer with some coverage and playmaking skills. Solid build. Field General.

Hooker is just a straight shut down FS – single-high rover.

If you ask who’s better vs Jordy Nelson, it’s Hooker.
If you want more all-around versatility like in 3rd and short, goaline and some TE help, it’s Adams.

Personally I’d prefer Hooker cuz his skill set is rarer.

          • MB30SD

            Hooker 100% then.

I heard Adams compared to berry, who’s the single high type, so that’s confusing… Or people just continue to be fucking morons about the difference between a FS and a fucking SS. Smfh.

Here’s a good breakdown on Baker’s weight gain and his athleticism: http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/top-nfl-draft-prospects-bigger-faster-baker-key-to-washingtons-resurgence/

I still want hooker @ 3… And berry in FA, or even get Baker in Rd 2 if no Fa safety

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Forget-me-Naught!(Butch)

Adams is not close to Berry at SS IMO.

Berry had way more ball-hawking skills to go with thump, build, and character.

Basically, if you were to construct the perfect SS, it’d be Berry.

Adams is more a T.J. Ward type.

          • MB30SD

Except berry is a fucking FS not a SS.

You’re not helping the situation god damn it

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Forget-me-Naught!(Butch)

            http://www.chiefs.com/team/depth-chart.html

Berry I think came out as a FS but plays SS

He can play both essentially, unlike Thomas in SEA.

          • Malice Halice

Hooker is way better than baker, that’s tell-tale. Baker got potential from what I saw in the vid. Baker could be around 4th rnd I’d take him too. Idk bout 3rd overall tho… we do fuckin suck in da backfield

          • Irish Sweetness

As long as we get a DE and FS in the first two rounds, we’re sweet.

Trade down, and it’s christmas come early. You get Adams/Budda with two of your first three picks.

          • Irish Sweetness

            Hooker is 6’2!!

          • Irish Sweetness

            Probably.
But if the fucker can play – and one could reasonably expect him to put on 8 lbs of muscle, he looks like a baller. He’d be perfect at 205. They’re always worth throwing the dice on. Ballers are good investments.

A game-changing DE in the first (if no juicy trade-down) followed by Budda in the second? Sounds like a safe bet.

With the gunslinger from Santa Claus under center, natch.

Then I saw his size, and made sense. But Honey Badger was the same size coming out of college.

That’s what I see when I watch Baker. Stud.

Wait, if Jay had an “exit interview” .. how is this a “leak” ?

    • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Forget-me-Naught!(Butch)

I think most players have “exit” interviews, esp those big names.

Kinda just “this is where our team is heading going forward” type things.

Sometimes it’s like, “OK Palmer. Fitz is staying, we’re keeping the band together for one last run”

      Other times it’s “Enjoy Cleveland!”

      • Irish Sweetness

But that meant they knew he was gone prolly Christmas ? That would have leaked a lot sooner than now.

      • MB30SD

        Or new jersey

    • MB30SD

Goldenballs… That’s the nickname opposing defenses gave him

  • Irish Sweetness

He is small, but we don’t need to draft him at #3. Interesting to see where he goes (round).

    • MB30SD

Totally. I’m waaay down with a hooker/ buddah/ best CB available draft… Or swap the 2 and 3 if that can work

  • Irish Sweetness

    Really?

    • MB30SD

Yep. Hoping he lasts, but that ain’t good your first year

  • Irish Sweetness

Looking at Fournette. Wow. Why aren’t we talking about drafting him. We could have him. 6’1. 235. Averaged 6.5 yards his last two years? He’s Jordan Howard with speed at the top end. I’d take having the best backfield in football and play some ground and pound with that. Stout defense. Bear football.

These guys don’t come along very often. I’m drafting Leonard Fournette.

    • MB30SD

Because we don’t need a RB to. What games were you watching my maings.

      • Zap Rowsdower (GP)

Never take away Irish’s pre draft fixation on a RB.

        • MB30SD

yeah, guess it’s kinda become a tradition huh?

      • Irish Sweetness

Week one. Howard breaks an ankle. We don’t look too clever then. Or just spell the backs and tire out the defense by ramming it down their throats. Play them BOTH in the pro-set, and then send them out to the flats in the pass game. That’s killer. And he’s a blue-chipper. What QB can you say that about in the #3 spot this year?

You want a backfield with Bo AND Marcus .. or just Marcus?

I just think the QB problem is not a problem at that point. I’d literally be okay with Hoyer at that point. Playaction Johnny.

        1. Fournette
        2. Budda
        3. Don’t Care ….

        • MB30SD

sure, or the new QB pace puts his ass on the line for @ #3, or our brand new safety, or etc… etc…

can’t run a team like that man. No one does. it’s not reality. No one has two pro bowlers at anything. it just doesn’t and can’t work. This isn’t madden 2014 yo.

Btw, see moana with the girls. it’s become a fav for me.

    • Malice Halice

He ain’t fuckin around! Him n Howard would be savage. Who gone qb?

How many titles to the Vikings have with Adrian Peterson or the Lions with Barry Sanders, or for that matter the Bears with Walter Payton? There is a reason Emmett Smith has 3 rings and those guys have 1 combined.

The Bears top ten plays of 2016. Interesting. Hoyer takes up the lower spots. Barkley’s only appearance is as a receiver. But the top spot is a boy who’s one of the few that can do it. Yes, Brian will dink and dunk you down the field. But when you need to win it ….

I haven’t read it yet, but I presume it has the appraisal report on Cutty’s Lake Forest mansion included.

    • willbest

I am having a hard time grasping why people think Cutler’s contract is horrible. You aren’t getting a 2nd for it because somebody has to believe in him. But 4th rounder picks aren’t worth a whole lot. If you are lucky you get a JAG player but half of them aren’t on 53-man rosters 3 years later.

Lets say Cutler is a FA. Maybe you get him for $12.5 million without the $2.5 million active roster bonus. But then its going to be fully guaranteed at signing. And its unlikely its going to be just a year 1 guarantee. And even if it is only 1 year guarantee his second season salary won’t be 16 million, it will be $21 million.

      • Irish Sweetness

This gets more crazy. Where would we find a QB for 12.5M who’s as good as Cutty … and knows our offense? Any roster without him is just crazy. If you’re going to just cut him, do it next year/let him play his contract out. Imagine he goes to a divisional rival a la Jimmy Mac? We’re lucky we never played against JIm, he said his shoulder was better than ever after reconstruction.

  • CanadaBear
    • willbest

Big Ben took a $31 million signing bonus in 2015. I wonder how much of that he would have to give back. Its gotta be painful writing a check for $15 million.

      • CanadaBear

Knowing the franchise they would probably have him work it off doing PR and other stuff. Not sure how much Big Ben has made but it’s all relative. Same with Jay after making $100+ mil, passing up a few mil to retire is not a big deal. To you and me, yes it is, to them, not so much.

        • willbest

Its a different feeling though. Cutler is walking away from money he doesn’t already have. Its sitting there in Big Ben’s bank account. Logically, they are the same, but emotionally its very different.

          • CanadaBear

Agree but $100+ mil in earnings makes most things not as hurtful.

      • BerwynBomber

        Are signing bonuses recoverable?

        • willbest

I am pretty sure they are if the person retires. What team would take the risk otherwise?

    • BerwynBomber

Floated this before, but given the Cutlers’ well-known like for Nashville (don’t they have a second home there?), I would not be shocked if he ends up as Mariota’s veteran back-up.

Of course it would require a massive pay cut, but maybe Jay’s says fuck it, my starting days are over, I’ve banked my 120M, my body has taken enough abuse, so I’ll carry the Surface and consult with the kid while me and the wife and kids get to live year-round where we have always desired.

      • Johnnywad

        That’s what I’d do.

        • willbest

Being a backup QB is still a lot of work. I mean its $3 million or whatever, but if my pile of money was generating $3 million a year for sitting on my ass I would have a hard time conditioning myself for football, and doing all the film study.

          • Johnnywad

Not if you loved playing football.

          • Irish Sweetness

So why wouldn’t WE give him the 3M? Let him run his contract out. Ask him if he wants the backup role. Assuming he wanted to be a backup which he most likely does not.

        • Irish Sweetness

Nah, I’d retire. 120M?? How much money does a guy need? I’d spend it witht he kids, because you can’t buy that time back.

          • Johnnywad

            An excellent point.

  • BearDown100393

Pacebot has botched any leverage toward dealing Jay Cutler. Either he is released or will report to camp, play a few “meaningless” quarters of pre-season while Pacebot rolls the dice, waits for a QB somewhere to go down (Bridgewater Computation) and then deal with a higher hand. A 33 year old starting QB holding most of the team’s records at his position is potentially going to be let go with nothing in return. Remarkable.

    • Sauron’s right eyeball

Meh, it’s not a big deal BD. The Bears just raised tickets prices, all is well at the McCaskey conclave.

      • BearDown100393

        My Eyes are moistening.

        • MB30SD

          Just your eyes?

    • CanadaBear

It’s not like the passing records for the Chicago Bears are stratospheric. No matter how Pace played his cards the best the Bears were going to get was a low rd pick. He’s toxic to most of the NFL. Not all his fault but that doesn’t change the perception. Not to mention, the injuries and the TO’s. Anyone that thought Cutler was going to bring much of anything in return was just kidding themselves.

      • MB30SD

        jes

    • willbest

Cutler will under no circumstances play in the preseason unless the Bears are committed to him at QB1. The last thing they want him to do is end up injured in a manner that forces them to pay him $12.5 million

    • BerwynBomber

If a team truly covets Cutler as a starter they will cough up something to get him rather than risk him being released and potentially being outbid by others. So don’t know how Pace botched any leverage.

      • leftcoastdave

And to the point, if they want him, they will want him asap. No time to play coy when you need him prepping up.

      • Zap Rowsdower (GP)

If they take him, they pay him $15M.

If they wait and go to market, he’s doubtful to break $12m

        • BerwynBomber

Of course. But if he goes to market they could also be bidding on his services against other teams.

My point is that if a team truly covets Cutler as a starter they are not going to risk that. They’ll toss the Bears a 4th rounder and get the deal done.

But if he’s plan C, or worse, a back-up, the Bears were probably going to have to release him anyway.

In short, I don’t know how the report or leak damages the Bears leverage.

        • willbest

When healthy Cutler is a top 20 QB. They all are on rookie contracts or make $18 million or more. The only way he gets paid less than 12 is if he takes a $8 mil with a $500k weekly active roster bonus

“They all are on rookie contracts are make $18 million or more.”

            Huh?

should be “they are all on rookie contracts or make $18 million or more.”

I had edited it immediately after I posted it, but I guess it didn’t update.

Insane, in fact. When does it ever happen? A top ten QB goes walkies.

If the Bears buy Berry and Bouye, does that mean we can forgive Pace if he drafts Watson?

      • MB30SD

        No

I’m wondering if Berry would want to play here. Money talks but we can’t be looking all that hot right now for a veteran wanting a piece of a Lombardi. Plus, his illness may have strengthened his bond to the Chiefs. Who knows.

How many Super Bowl winning teams can you name 5 players on? No doubt winning is awesome, but how much money are you willing to give up to play on the Patriots?

        $500k? $2 million?

And keep in mind that playing in Boston is really expensive tax wise. Especially if you end up playing in CA a couple times that year.

And lets say they sign with a competitor like Seattle. What happens if Wilson’s leg goes all Teddy Bridgewater. Now you signed at a discount and you wallow in mediocrity. What happens if your leg goes that way?

As much as players want to win they know, and their agents are reminding them, a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

If Wilson’s leg goes all Teddy … we present Cutty … TA-DA!!
