Five Things We Learned From the 2016 Season

| January 2nd, 2017

It’s so easy to look at the record, 3-13, and pronounce the Bears an awful team with no hope. But that simply isn’t what took place this season. The Bears were in year two of a rebuild, lost $60M worth of players to IR and played 6 of their 16 games with Matt Barkley at quarterback. Bill Belichick wasn’t getting this group to the postseason.

So what did we learn from this difficult campaign?

  • The Bears found their offensive identity. The 2017 Bears will be defined on offense by a bully interior of their offensive line and the best power back they’ve had in recent memory, Jordan Howard. Expect every decision made on that side of the ball this offseason to complement this approach. And don’t be surprised if the Bears look to add another back to the rotation who can provide more than a spell for their workhorse.
  • The team does not have one reliable player in their secondary. The Bears won’t come into next season with seven new guys in their secondary. They’ll continue to develop players like LeBlanc, Hall, Callahan, Amos and maybe even Bush and HJQ. But the team must make secondary the primary focus of the spring and add several – not one or two but several – valuable assets to this unit.
  • Pass rush, pass rush, pass rush. Leonard Floyd looks the part. Pernell McPhee should be healthy come September. But the Bears must add to their pass rush. Whether that means finding rushers for the defensive line or zeroing in on a top edge guy in the draft, the only way for this team to increase their turnover total is to increase the pressure on opposing quarterbacks.
  • Ryan Pace deserves our faith. Look at Pace’s additions this offseason: Sitton, Whitehair, Howard, Floyd, Freeman, Trevathan, Hicks, Massie. Every one of them a significant improvement. Hell, even Hoyer and Barkley kept the Bears competitive as backups. The Bears had their best offseason in terms of personnel additions in years. Now they face two huge questions this time around. Is Alshon going to be brought back? Who is playing quarterback? Pace deserves a chance to answer both.
  • John Fox may not. Fox will get 2017. But he will get no more excuses.

The arrow is pointed decidedly up. But just as one great offseason can move the organization in the right direction, a bad offseason can derail the train as quickly. The next five years of Bears football will be defined by what Ryan Pace does between now and Bourbonnais.

Can the Bears upgrade their coaching staffordable outside of Fox?

    • CanadaBear

Fox is in the same place as Lovie his last year. Nobody with a decent resume is coming to Chicago. There’s a better than even chance Fox gets fired next year so I can’t see anyone worth a shit coming to Chicago.

      • Internet Smug Prick #9 (GP)

        Fangio as HC.

        • CanadaBear

I’d love that but you know that’s not happening unless Fox strokes out in the off season.

          • Internet Smug Prick #9 (GP)

            #FoxStroke

        • Irish Sweetness

          Because he …..?

    • Irish Sweetness

My man! Yup, get a DC with testicles. Bug hairy man-sized bollocks. With teeth.

Defense needs to be aggressive IMO. Pressure. You know it.

Just curious .. can anyone name a great defense – which you need for the SB – that was not aggressive?

      • Big Mike

Fangio is the best DC we’ve had since Chico.

  • MB30SD

agree with all of jeff’s points

    • Sauron’s right eyeball

Worst to 1st next year. Watch!

      • BearDown100393

        • Irish Sweetness

Beating Miami to go 16-0 …

    • Irish Sweetness

      Shit, I haven’t read them yet …

    • roglesby

I agree with this: ‘Bill Belichick wasn’t getting this group to the postseason’.. But…. He would get them to 6-10 or 7-9… Belichick isn’t going 3-13 with a team made up of high school starters.

Jeff at a low bar here. Just because this team isn’t going to the post season is a far distance from 3… One, two, three…. THREE wins. Let that sink in.

      • Big Mike

Not with this team. Belichick is a HOF coach, no doubt. But a large part of that is based upon the system he built and the personnel he has. To say Belichick would have won 7 games with this group of players, this season discounts the HC’s role as a team builder and greatly exaggerates their gameday contribution.

  • Internet Smug Prick #9 (GP)

Pernell McPhee should be healthy come September.

He won’t. He just won’t. Briggs said it in post game: guys knee is done. DONE.

You can give him a chance, but you draft Johnathan Allen to be the guy that Houston and McPhee cannot be.

I agree with you on team identity: basically the Orton Bears. A big D, a grinding run game and a game managing QB with a low mistake ratio with Jeffery as your weapon to keep the safeties from crowding.

But we need to compliment Floyd, who should be much better and McPhee is not that guy.

My dream draft is to grab both Crimson Tide guys: Allen and Foster to study under Trevathan. It’s impossible as both are high #1 talent, but that would shore up the Monsters of the Midway a lot.

    • MB30SD

their FS looked super strong too, can’t remember his name

      • Internet Smug Prick #9 (GP)

I can see looking at Peppers at 3 but Allen is a speed guy with none of Floyd’s strength issues.

        • Irish Sweetness

The knock on Peppers is coverage? And we’d want him to play Safety and not wildcat QB?

        • Big Mike

Allen is a stud. he’s 6’3 294. Peppers is a great athlete. Allen is a great football player. Taking Peppers wouldn’t be terrible, but of all the pieces we need in the secondary, Peppers doesn’t seem like the right fit. We need guys who can cover, more than we need thumpers. The knock on Peppers is the number of impact plays he makes on defense.

          • Top Dog

Bears should draft Jamal Adams from LSU

      • Internet Smug Prick #9 (GP)

you may be thinking of Marlon Humphrey.

    • Alex

      Carroll Phillips (OLB)

    • Irish Sweetness

Here’s more cray cray … how about drafting Allen … and then drafting Malik McDowell …and then a safety ..and a CB.

Build the defense … and go with what we have on offense.

      Let’s think about our offense as it is;

      Alshon >>>> Leno – Whitehair/Sitton – Grasu – Long/WH – Massie (euch) >>>>> Cam + KW

      >>>>>> Cutty (and currently Shaw)

      >>>>>> Howard

That doesn’t suck. That’s better than Brock fucking Osweiler and Houston.

We could go hog wild on defensive picks (which is what wins championships) and still draft TEs, sign TEs, sign OL whatever.

      Anyone feeling this?

      • MB30SD

that’s my draft strategy at this point… unless we get an amazing offer to trade down 5-7ish spots.

        • Irish Sweetness

          See?

          D-FENS!

I like our offense enough to ejaculate all over the defense in the draft.

          • MB30SD

yep. get another solid tackle or 2 wherever we can, pick up a good WR somewhere. Tag or trade alshon… we’re kinda done.

Oh, and Start HOYER THE DESTROYER!!! ; )

          • CanadaBear

What exactly do you like about our O? Line is OK, QB is barren, WR’s 1 or 2 starters depending if Alshon stays, TE is barren and we need backup RB’s.

    • Irish Sweetness

Not if you trade Cutty to a desperate partner / and/or trade a lower pick in a Kevin Costner deal.. how high is Foster predicted to go?

Agree on complementing Floyd. An Otis for the Wilbur .. and a fucking Mike come to think of it …

    • Big Mike

Briggs is a 50/50 with insight like that. Still need more pass rush, but to say McPhee is done based on Briggs’ comment is pessimistic. Jonathan Allen would be a great pick, if we had Reggie White and Richard Dent on the field. I would shy away from Allen and Foster. Alabama guys scare me. That team is so good at every position, so well coached there is a drop off. I’ll be watching them closely in the National Championship game.

Happy New Year and here’s to Pace crushing it again and the 2015 draft class coming back to life.

  • Alex

Players I’m interested in to improve the Bears.

    Draft: –

Malik Hooper (FS) – Will he declare?
Garett Bolles (OT) – Possible 2nd rounder to beat out Leno Jr.
Carroll Phillips (OLB) – Capable of bringing THE POWER.
A Tight End in rounds 2-4.

    FA: –

Mike Glennon (QB) – Could save the Bears drafting a QB. A lot won’t like this idea.
A J Bouye (CB) – A guy to lock down 1 half of the field. The rest can fight over the 2nd slot.
Tony Jefferson (SS) – Would make a very strong combo with Hooper.
Lance Dunbar (RB) – An upgrade to Langford. Carey can be cut.

    • Internet Smug Prick #9 (GP)

Tannenhill from the Fish might be available.

      • MB30SD

less than meh. Might was well roll with the winner of the Barkley, hoyer, shaw war in that case, no?

        • Irish Sweetness

say them out loud though … if your two guys are two of those ….. are you feeling a SB in the next three years?

As a Bears fan, naturally I’m not feeling a SB ever …

          • MB30SD

honestly, I think we’re a year away from really competing. So to me, with this draft class… you patch the QB spot (which is what any of the above guys are… or glennon or tannihill or any of those guys) while building a seriously badass D and specials and solidifying the O in weak spots… then we sell out the house to get our Chise in ’18 if pace sees him.

That’s what I’d do at least.

          • Irish Sweetness

If Cutty’s in there, we need to be booking SB tickets now. All comes back to goldenballs.

            What will they do?

          • CanadaBear

            WOW!

          • MB30SD

            more like… WTF?!?!?!

      • BearDown100393

Gase would love to have Jay.

        • MB30SD

he can fucking have him… for a first. (a girl can dream)

          • CanadaBear

            Go big or go home.

          • MB30SD

            yep

          • Irish Sweetness

A first, I’d happily say sayonara Jay … not happily perhaps ….

          • MB30SD

gase might be the only one who’d give up a 1st for him. I’d be way down.

          • CanadaBear

If the Bears got a first for Cutler you’d better look around to see if there are any icicles in hell.

          • Huge Bears Penis

It might be pretty cold in hell already. I mean Trump will be our president.

          • Big Mike

and the Cubs won the World Series. (They really did, I checked again today)

          • MB30SD

I know, I’m thinking Gase might. He knows he can turn him into something interesting. So maybe?

          • Irish Sweetness

A second rounder is surely a thing. Two picks in the second is sexy.

But are you trading away your shot at the trophy next season?

          • MB30SD

we have no shot at a trophy next season maings. 8-8 if pace knocks it out of the park (which I personally think he will)

          • Big Mike

I’m saying 9 wins. Meaningful games in Dec. (damn there is an echo. We’ve been on the board so long, we are recycling our rebuilding comments)

          • MB30SD

Yeah, we’ll see how the offseason goes

          • CanadaBear

if you’re saying Cutler takes us to the SB next year, I have no words. I still maintain we release Cutler or he stays (god forbid) another season. Why would anyone trade a decent pick for a mediocre QB that has flamed out over the last 8 years, might have a chronic issue with the thumb on his throwing hand and is coming off shoulder surgery?

          • MB30SD

            jes

          • Huge Bears Penis

            Vikings traded for Bradford.

          • CanadaBear

Vikings thought they had a chance to get to the dance. The Bears, not so much.

          • willbest

They did until they lost their tackles. I would feel bad for them if I wasn’t so jaded.

          • willbest

And they plan on keeping him, which says to me that Teddy’s NFL career is done.

          • Big Mike

CB, have you seen the garbage that is QB play around the league. Healthy Cutler adds 2 wins to about a 1/2 dozen teams. He would have added 2 wins to the Bears this season.

          • Big Mike

For a first Pace is in the HOF.

      • Irish Sweetness

Why not Moore as our #2 instead?

    • BerwynBomber

I like Glennon, but no matter who is under C next year, if there is a QB in the draft that Pace likes he absolutely should take him. Part of the reason we are in the mess we are now is that Angelo, Emery and Pace (up to now) have not drafted and developed a young QB.

P.S. Angelo can be partly forgiven as he went out and got Cutty.

      • Internet Smug Prick #9 (GP)

If Trubinsky fell, you would take him?

        • BerwynBomber

I don’t know, GP. Haven’t seen enough of him. The one kid I’m kinda intrigued by is Rudolph at Okie state. But I haven’t seen a lot of him either and don’t know if he’s declaring.

This honestly seems like a second/third round QB draft, and I’d be fine with that.

          • Internet Smug Prick #9 (GP)

Niners shitcanned Kelly, so I can see the Niners taking Kizer leaving Trubinsky on the board.

          • Irish Sweetness

Or they leave Kizer on the board, and we settle for a ‘guy’ in Kizer .. or PAce tries to be cute, and drafts Allen and then Kayaa later on … whom we release in two years.

          • CanadaBear

I watched Trubisky in the bowl game the other day (only time I’ve ever seen him) and he looked like a young Cutler. Great arm, decent mobility in the pocket and a slow processor.

          • BerwynBomber

Yeah, the processing stuff is so often hard to detect, especially on YT “highlights”, which are often nothing more than first read passes.

The one college kid I immediately detected at the college level was Brees who was working through a ton of progressions (quickly) with that Tiller “Basketball on Grass” offense at Purdue. Orton did fairly well there too but you could tell a) he didn’t process as quickly as Brees, nor b) was he as athletic.

Actually, that Browning kid (at Washington) seemed to see the field real well when I caught him early in the year. But obviously USC and ‘Bama beat the shit out of him at the end of the year.

          • Irish Sweetness

That’s the thing, if you don’t watch college games, like me, you can miss obvious stuff in their game, their opponents, their team-mates etc.

DeShaun Watson apparently only ever reads half the field in front of him. That’s a straight-off red flag if you want him to win next season.

Kizer tends to leg it rather too quickly, rather than go through his progression, but he could be okay. What are his decision making abilities like though?

          • Irish Sweetness

I like this guy’s breakdowns. He did the top 5 or 6, I watched them yesterday. Here’s Trubisky’s, who sounded and looked the most promising. Good size, big arm, has touch, quick release, accurate, can move well. Nice.

            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwONkFHias8&t=1s

But again … you guys watch the games …

          • CanadaBear

            I think you forgot something.

          • Irish Sweetness

Luke Falk and Mahome I’ve only heard about . .anyone watch them?

        • Alex

Honestly I wouldn’t but that’s just me. If Pace likes him he certainly should take him or anyone else he thinks could be a future QB. Glennon hasn’t had a massive amount of playing time but if you average out his stats they’re pretty reasonable. I think he’d play well behind an upgraded OL (+ Bolles) and with Howard supported by Dunbar in the back field.

          • Irish Sweetness

Glennon is good, and he has nice size. If he’s your #2 you have a shot at winning.

If he’s your #1 and you draft Trubisky, it’s win-win for the future, and maybe the playoffs if your team is good on top of that.

        • Irish Sweetness

He looks to be the best in the draft. Like a Big Ben. He won’t fall.

        • willbest

I presume with the canning of Chip Kelly that San Fran is drafting a QB at #2

        • Sauron’s right eyeball

I think the Bears can trade down 2 spots and still get him.

          • Irish Sweetness

Ooooooh …. Cleveland or San Fran will take him methinks.

We’re either getting him or a stud DE though. It’s all good.

      • CanadaBear

5th and 6th rd picks (esp the Bears picks at QB in those rds) don’t count as anything but throwing darts blindfolded and hoping for a bullseye. With ya all the way on this one!

        • BerwynBomber

Exactly. I would say only third round or better would count.

      • Alex

That’s fair. Maybe Glennon and a high drafted rookie QB but I think Hoyer will be cheaper than Glennon if we just need supporting cast. Getting Glennon in FA just allows us more options in the draft which is what I want.

        • Alex

‘pipe dream’ e.g. Trade back to 6-8th in the 1st and get Malik Hooper to match up with Tony Jefferson whilst collecting a minimum extra 2nd+. There’s a lot of good players to be had a Bears positions of need in the 2nd round. We may not get to the SB (!!!!!) but the playoffs isn’t out of the question with good FA, draft and less injuries.

          • Irish Sweetness

If we’re talking superbowls, then we need to sell out on the defensive side, as history suggests. I mean Houston are in the playoffs. Brock fkn Osweiler! He sucks!

        • Alex

Tony Romo or injured Tony Romo? He could take the Bears a long way behind a decent line and equipped with Howard and a good defence. If we were closer to the SB I’d go after him in FA. I don’t think we are though and nor will he hence Glennon.

          • MB30SD

            NO alex no!!!

Trading an old injury prone gunsliger for an older (I think) more injury prone gunslinger… no thanks.

Romo will look great till about the 10th series, when he snaps his back in half and dies on the field. Dude needs to retire after the season… for the sake of his family and any semblance of reasonable living quality after 45

          • Alex

It was a joke really and I do agree though Romo is better than Cutler in my opinion. Glennon for me.

          • BerwynBomber

Romo is decidedly better than Cutler. The problem is he is two years older and makes Cutler seem uninjured by comparison.

          • MB30SD

romo is better, when he’s not…. breaking his fucking back multiple time alex. His BACK. Yikes man.

          • BearDown100393

Romo is only better at sustaining injuries compared to Jay.

          • Irish Sweetness

36 years old? Fuck that for a game of soldiers.

      • MB30SD

problem is we’re abjectly turrible at evaluating and picking QB talent maings.

We’re not browns bad, but almost. Maybe we get some help from Dallas and/or Pats behind the table.

        • BerwynBomber

Agreed. But you have to spin the wheel. Part of the reason I think we have been “content” with Cutty all these years is a) our poor history with QBs, and b) our fear of drafting one.

You have to put the Cade McNowns and Grossmans in the rearview. In all honesty, Grossman really wasn’t a bust, and even Orton was a half-decent QB pick.

          • MB30SD

I loved orton. Lovie blew that hard. Putting orton and keeping TJ in for the SB and we win. Hands down.

Lovie can suck my dick. Man I hate that fuck.

          • CanadaBear

Revisionist history for sure. Orton’s 2005 season; 15 games started, 9 TD’s, 13 INT’s, 12 fumbles and a QB rating of 59.7 with a completion percentage of 51.6%. There’s absolutely nothing there that says Orton wins the SB. Nothing!

          • Huge Bears Penis

He had a great neckbeard! That is enough to win a SB.

          • BearDown100393

Any man brave enough to nail Lisa Lampanelli can win a SB for me any day.

          • MB30SD

            jesus… WHAT??

          • Huge Bears Penis

            WTF!!!!

          • Irish Sweetness

            What?

          • MB30SD
          • CanadaBear

In fairness to her, she’s lost weight!

          • MB30SD

            uggggghhhhhh

          • Irish Sweetness

He was a rookie. 10 wins as a rookie was impressive. All he had to do in the SB was hand it off to TJ and let the defense kill the Colts. Peyton did his level best to piss that game away. But with no Tommie/MB .. yeah, it’s all fantasy anyway.

          • BerwynBomber

It will always rankle me a bit that Peyton has two SB wins — even a SB MVP — when he kinda sucked in one of the games and was absolutely crap in the other.

          • MB30SD

            of course it is.

            rex is our QB

He should have been given the chance

          • Irish Sweetness

Kyle, TJ all the way, Tommie and MB. Absolutely, but ….

          • MB30SD

            yep. spilled milk. smfh

          • BearDown100393

The Bears were just a few Hester run backs short of winning that SB.

          • BerwynBomber

            You’re on fire today.

          • SC Dave

The defense failed in the SB.

          • Irish Sweetness

Dude, Rex sucked. Sorry. We can’t even go there. Kyle was okay.

          • BearDown100393

            Gunslinger

          • BerwynBomber

            I wasn’t a fan either but he wasn’t a bust.

          • Irish Sweetness

            Those thalidomide hands ….

        • SC Dave

That was the old days. We have Pace now; have a little faith, brother!

          • MB30SD

I’m prolly his biggest fanboi in the blog right now, but we don’t know about his QB skills… that’s special talent.

            …or were you being factious?

      • Irish Sweetness

Can Angelo be forgiven for the Cutty trade? It was a bad trade in retrospect.

        • BearDown100393

          Great trade.

        • BerwynBomber

It was perfectly justifiable trade. A young, “potential” franchise QB was on the market and Angelo went out and got him.

What wasn’t NEARLY as justifiable was Emery giving him an elite QB contract. Should have tagged him for a year, then shipped him or negotiated downward. We already had four or five years to see what he was at that point.

          • Irish Sweetness

In retrospect though, it was bad trade. You don’t make it again.

          • DaCoaches Mustache

I’ll never forget Cutlers first game as a Bear. I was all excited. The Bears finally got a QB after year after year of knowing that our QB was crap, and if we won, we would win despite the QB and not because of him. Then he goes out and promptly chucks 4 picks against the Pack. Each one of them of the WTF variety. 7 Years later and he’s the exact same dude.

Fuck that trade. Fuck that trade right in the ear.

        • willbest

The trade didn’t work out. That doesn’t mean it was bad. The RG3 trade was horrible. Not that it did the Rams any good.

          • Irish Sweetness

I was ecstatic at the time. I woke up smiling for three months after that trade. Honestly.

        • MB30SD

Angelo can never be forgiven for anything.

          • DaCoaches Mustache

He had a 95-81 record as our GM. I always thought he was poo at the time, but looking back is it possible he was not, in fact, poo? Hot takes

          • MB30SD

I hate you, but I love you.

  • BerwynBomber

Btw, one other wild card option at QB could be a trade with the Cheese for Brett Hundley (that is, if Pace did indeed like him and still likes him).

    • MB30SD

I’m a UCLA fan (bro went) and I’m still meh on hundley.

    • Alex

No thanks. Giving up draft picks to the Packers for Hundley. Never. Glennon way better. Pace wants his draft picks.

      • BerwynBomber

I tend to agree. Was just tossing it out there.

      • Irish Sweetness

How many are on board for trading down from #3 if we’re offered it?

        • Huge Bears Penis

depending on the offer, otherwise no give me a game changing playmaker. no guarantee we get that by trading down.

        • willbest

Did Garret and Allen go #1 and 2, and are we only trading down a couple spaces because somebody wants a QB and we are going to grab Peppers?

          Its too hard to tell.

          • MB30SD

agree. It’s all in the deal and who’s on the board still.

This is obviously a pick-time decision. If we’re getting offered a 10ish pick plus another couple/few picks in high 2 and 3 and allen is already gone… hell yes.

          • Irish Sweetness

SF will grab a QB, I think CLE grab a DE – with Kessler and RGIII already … they want to feed the Dawg pound …

        • Alex

I am if we don’t go too far enabling us to get Malik Hooper (personal favourite) and an extra 2nd rounder and I presume another 1 or 2 decent draft picks this year and next. That seriously works for me subject to Pace not being in love with a QB (I’m not).

          • Alex

Hooper in the draft along with Jefferson and say Bouye in FA would almost certainly make the Bears a Top 10 defence and probably even more.

          • Alex

You can win with that when you have a QB that doesn’t constantly throw picks and you work your ‘workhorse’ RB behind a strong OL built for the power running game.

          • MB30SD

Alex, are you a fucking Englishman??! Another fucking pommy on the board!?? WTF man?

          • Alex

            I absolutely am!

          • MB30SD

            jesus

          • Alex

Not a particularly posh one though.

          • MB30SD

            cunt

          • MB30SD

this was a joke mate. I was using it in the English sense, not the american.

Did I scare you off? fucking pommies.

          • Irish Sweetness

            By Jove!

          • Irish Sweetness

            Who’s the other one?

            FEE-FI-FO-FUM …

          • MB30SD

I’m including you ya irish coont. Same fucking island chain

          • Irish Sweetness

He likes Kayaa apparently. So does Arians.

          • Alex

If he parlayed an extra 2nd rounder moving back and taking Hooker then Pace can take Kayaa! Him and an OT, CB or DE/Edge guy.

          • willbest

I like Kayaa. I do worry a bit about his arm though. He is better than Hoyer, but he doesn’t seem to hit his WR in stride. Maybe that is just a function of watching so much Stafford, Rodgers, Cutler that I forget there are other ways to play QB.

        • Sauron’s right eyeball

The Bears can trade down 3 spots in the first and still get their guy if Pace has decided to go qb. He may well do that because adressing the QB position is way overdue. The better this team gets, the harder it will be to draft one.

Our 1st pick is going to be QB, it has to be.

          • CanadaBear

Not sure about that Trac. None of the QB’s seem all that compelling. They definitely have to get a QB but not necessarily in the first rd.

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

            It’s now or never babe.

          • CanadaBear

I get it but I’d be OK with a QB pick in rd 2-3

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

Here’s the thing, if the Bears miss out on drafting a viable starting qb this year, they will have to mortgage the house next year.

          • MB30SD

see below… I don’t think we have a choice… no QB good enough this year. Next year if we have to go all out for the right guy, then so be it. This year should be ALL about fixing ALL of our D spots and solidifying the O

          • Irish Sweetness

Why? Where is the need to draft a QB? Did the Giants draft Eli? Did NO draft Drew? They both won SBs ….

And who’s to say we don’t suck even worse next year?

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

If the Bears suck next year that would be most unfortunate.

          • MB30SD

and I’ll be done. I’ll still watch football and I’ll still be a ‘bears fan’, but I’ll be done.

          • willbest

No you won’t they will do something in the off season of 2018 to vex and intrgiue you and you will be back. I said I was done after 2014, and then they went young and fresh at GM and established HC, and I thought …. maybe. I should have quit. I should have walked away. If they got good I could always fair weather back. But nope. I stayed, like the loyal lab. Even when I am beaten and abused. I keep coming back.

          • MB30SD

yeeeaaaah, totally feel ya maings. I just can’t any more. I’ll just go on hybernation… like most of the 90’s. Stop caring, stop watching… just be a football fan, maybe get more into college ball again. Take up crocheting?

          • Irish Sweetness

But why? Who? Is he your starter for ten years?

          • CanadaBear

Why over draft a guy just because he’s a QB. If POX go that route, they’d better be sure. Most of the guys people are talking about aren’t worth the pick in the top of the draft. That’s not me saying it, almost everything I read says this.

          • Irish Sweetness

Point being, even Dallas passed on Prescott twice. Why? Because they didn’t know.

Brad Kayaa could be that guy .. if you’re talking outside the first round. Or not. Damn, look at Brady …

For some reason I have a nose for QBs, just by their smell, not having watched them in college or anything. These guys have auras. Manziel, Tebow and the like. Trubisky has the aura of a keeper. I sense the Force is strong with this one.

          • CanadaBear

I’ll need a little more than that to get on board.

          • Irish Sweetness

Well, we’ll see what our record is next season first ;o)

          • MB30SD

            FUCK THAT this year.

That would be a huge mistake. Trade down 3-4 spots, pick up another 1st and a couple 2nds and a 3rd. Then get the best DB or OL on the board and then DL, then DB, then DB, then TE.

Focus on QB next year… and sell out to get him if there’s that guy

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

I’m saying you can do all that and get a QB if Pace’s pussy eye comes into focus on the right players come draft time.

          • Irish Sweetness

Has to be? Cutty is under contract. Snot Brockweiler is in the playoffs.

Myles Garrett or Allen change your defense to a good/better thing.

  • MB30SD

My #1 move for pace this offseason is to go get Hill AND Berry.

Hill might be a fuck up and an addict, but he’ll be cheap as fuck to take a flyer on. We can’t afford to be the fucking choir boy team anymore. Take a chance on some bad asses. God knows we could use the attitude adjustment.

He does that, and there’s a TON of pressure off to fix the entire secondary… and in two moves, he’s upgraded that unit by about a billion degrees of goodness

    • BearDown100393

Ray McDonald would be real cheap.

      • MB30SD

Ray McDonald is a fucking lunatic psyco woman beater.

Hill likes weed. If that was an issue for me, I’d have about 2 friends.

        • BearDown100393

True. But imagine a psycho on 3rd down.

          • Huge Bears Penis

hell yeah, get a team hypnotist to make him think the opposing QBs are ex girlfriends, he would would be unstoppable.

          • MB30SD

            too soon!

          • BearDown100393

Just build a steel cage for him at Halas Hall.

          • Irish Sweetness

Like they say about Floyd. 49-0 … and also undefeated in the Women’s division.

        • Irish Sweetness

Nothing wrong with being a lunatic psycho when you’re building a defense …

Didn’t a certain Ravens LB stab someone? Wasn’t a certain Giants LB a … well … this isn’t quite twitter, but … morally south of decent in relation to the kinder?

Warren Moon wrapped a phone cord around his wife’s neck .. but he could play ball.

          (inspects own fingernails)

Wonder what the bitch said to make him do that?

    • BerwynBomber

Wonder, though, if it will be all about the money for Berry. Could see him giving KC a home team discount to stay with a proven winner.

      • MB30SD

sure, obviously only if he’s there to be had.

      • willbest

If the win the SB, it will be a straight money gig. Now they get Reid as their HC and gotta get past NE first. If they make the AFCC or SB and miss he might be lulled into staying at a discount.

  • Huge Bears Penis

With the benching of Tyrod Taylor it brings his tenure in Buff into question. I would not mind taking a flyer on him if he is available, he is better than all the QBs the blog has mention. His situation is intriguing. Solid stats, mobile, all while playing in a Rex Ryan offense. If anything it will buy us sometime on QB prospects.

    • MB30SD

I wouldn’t hate that move, but do we have the right personnel for his style of QBing?

      • Huge Bears Penis

I don’t see why not. The mobility is what intrigues me the most.

      • BearDown100393

Doesn’t really matter. We got Cutler.

      • willbest

Jeffery excels at the Jump ball, and Meredith does really well at getting the ball near the line and making the LB or CB miss. I can’t imagine any NFL QB not being able to play with them.

        • MB30SD

Jeffery does excel at the jump ball… about 5-8 games a year. We need a real #1 at some point… but that’s not next year. We need to find and prove we have a chise first. then it becomes super important.

          • willbest

I wouldn’t hate you so much if you said 10-12 games a year like a person who could base his arguments in reason and logic rather than a critter running on pure emotion.

          • MB30SD

but that wouldn’t be nearly as much fun will.

            And whatevs, you love me.

          • CanadaBear

I used to until you turned into such a slut.

          • MB30SD

oh right… you fucking LOVE that I’m a slut and I sometimes share stories.

Butch is just too much of a fucking degenerate for most to relate. I don’t piss in chicks mouths, I just slay and share sometimes. So I’m like the board’s Mr. vicarious

            LIAR!!!

          • CanadaBear

Would an old altar boy lie?

          • Huge Bears Penis

            yes

          • MB30SD

            yes

          • Irish Sweetness

            They all do!

            “He never touched me!”

          • CanadaBear

Didn’t have to lie about that. Although a nun had her hands all over me a few times in 7th grade.

          • MB30SD

            yikes!

          • CanadaBear

It was the only action I was getting!

          • Irish Sweetness

You are a slut though, MB.

            I wish I could be a slut.

            I remember sex …

          • MB30SD

fuck that noise maings. Get the fuck outta there, take the kids back to Ireland… then bang as many English tarts as possible (since they all are) as payback for what they did to your country/countrymen.

Do it. You only live once maings. Fuck being miserable.

          • Irish Sweetness

Ireland is the capital of misery.

There are a lot of Romanian sluts in Dublin mind you …

          • MB30SD

            bingo!

          • Irish Sweetness

            TEE-HEE!

        • Irish Sweetness

          Brian Hoyer?

          • willbest

Well Brian Hoyer works really well with Cam because Cam does really well when he gets the ball within 5 yards of the LOS. Jeffery is your 10-45 yards down the field guy.

          • Irish Sweetness

That’s what I mean 10 yards downfield and AJ is out of range. Seriously. Cam came into fashion under Brian. Cutty came back and it was all AJ again.

That’s one major drawback of Cutty, he’s not Drew Brees, where you’ll have 9 different receivers in a game. It was either all Brandon, or all AJ. Defenses aren’t that stupid …

          • willbest

Jay is all wait and see if his first read gets open. That is whatever the OC calls. I have shown he targets his top 3-4 receivers pretty evenly.

Hoyer looks at Jeffery and says “fuck he is too far” and then looked at Cam/Royal/Howard.

          • MB30SD

when jeffery is actually playing. ; )

          • willbest

            *shakes fist*

    • BearDown100393

Taylor got Rexed out of Buffalo.

    • BerwynBomber

Decent idea. But he also hasn’t taken his one game benching very well in BUF. Don’t know if Fox will care to deal with any perceived attitude.

And the one knock on Taylor is his size. Yes, the Brees and Wilsons exist, but they’re definitely exceptions to the rule.

    • Johnnywad

Aside from Drew Brees, how many FA QBs have worked out long term?

Fuck all these retreads. I’m drafting a QB every year until I hit. Until then I’m rolling with Hoyer level scrubs.

      • Sauron’s right eyeball

        Boom! Preach it Johnny!

      • willbest

Farve got the vikings to the NFCC. Alex Smith is doing pretty well in KC. Carson Palmer went deep for Arizona. It happens enough that you shouldn’t foreclose that possibility. Its not like the draft isn’t full of a murders row of bad QBs

        • Johnnywad

          Point taken

  • BearDown100393

The Bears had a successful disappointment of a season.

    • Huge Bears Penis

Man if we had only won 6-7 more games we would have been in the playoffs this year.

      • BearDown100393

Bears just ran out of games to win.

  • Irish Sweetness

The end of that last thread was awesome. I think we’re getting somewhere.

Interestingly, Hoyer pops up a lot. He’s not even a Bear though. The real question .. the ONLY question … is what to do with Jay Christopher Goldenballs.

    1. If Pace drafts Trubisky (my choice after admittedly only watching half an hour of each of the top 5 QBs), does his salary basically mean they have to trade Cutty? Then you still need a vet – that can WIN – because the #1 will go down … sure as shit. Glennon could be had. He’s a big boy. I won’t harp on Hoyer.

    2. If we go with Cutty for another year … same question at the #2 spot. Drafting a Brad Kaaya in round 2 or 3 is a loser’s option. It’s a half-assed effort. Piss or get off the pot. And it means you’re fucked if Cutty gets injured, and you’ve got a rookie shitting the bed. Unless you think he’s a Dak Prescott …

For me, if it were financially possible, we could draft Trubisky and start Jay. OLD SKOOL. Master and apprentice.

Or … draft your DE. Allen, whoever. Get that stud. Beef that line. Ride Cutty plus whoever … and NEVER draft a QB .. always use what’s available and let other teams do the drafting/babysitting/coaching/development gig.

    • Huge Bears Penis

we have about 60 mill in cap space counting Cutty’s contract. So no issues financially.

      • Irish Sweetness

Thank you. Then we could draft Trub, keep Cuuty and we’re sweet at QB moving forward. We can draft a DE and/or sign one.

        I like.

        • CanadaBear

Cutler and Cutler Jr, what could go wrong?

    • MB30SD

you want cuttler molding anything but some other team’s bank account!??

What’s he going to teach our new guy(s), the fine nuances of losing strip sacks?

      • BearDown100393

QB awareness and real leadership along with media handling

        • MB30SD

          yes, agree. He’s the bestests

      • Huge Bears Penis

that is a skill not everyone possesses.

        • MB30SD

very true. he is the best at it. HOF!!!

      • Internet Smug Prick #9 (GP)

        Hahahahaha

  • BearDown100393

For those hating on Fox, how about Sean Payton. Probably could be had.

    • Make RedZone Conv% Great Again

The only way I want a QB drafted is if a guy like Payton is the coach.

      • MB30SD

        bingo!

        this.

        • Make RedZone Conv% Great Again

if we keep Fox you don’t bring in a QB, you get QB killers.

          And purchase ballhawks in FA.

          • Alex

Agreed. Build a great defence and limit turnovers by your QB.

          • Make RedZone Conv% Great Again

sorry, have to disagree a bit.
Build a great defense that can take the ball away and score occasionally so you can have a QB make a mistake or two without it being the death knell of the game.
You can’t have a cuckold at QB like Hoyer and expect to win. You can’t have a scrub like Barkley either. You need a Cutler or better. We have a Cutler and we have a run game. Now we need to build a D that can impact games.

          • Alex

I was thinking more Glennon than Hoyer or Barkley. I think Cutler goes.

          • Make RedZone Conv% Great Again

Cutler may very well go. Glennon is not a step up from Hoyer in my opinion and would cost more than money.

          • Irish Sweetness

            You complete me.

Sounds a lot like the ’85 Bears too.

Except of course that they had …

            The. Greatest. Quarterback. Ever.

          • SC Dave

Um, no. They had the second greatest RB tho.

          • MB30SD

You mean start HOYER THE DESTROYER!!!

I whole heartedly agree my pommy friend!

          • Make RedZone Conv% Great Again

haha, fuck Hoyer. he’s like a fairly competent eager middle manager who drives a Subaru Forrester.

          • MB30SD

Yep. We don’t have the option to get Jeff Besos for our CEO until next year, so roll with the middle manager, and knock your product R&D and marketing out of the park this year.

Get besos next year with all the compliments built this year, then sell to Google for 10X 6 months trailing!!!

          • BearDown100393

            A skinnier Jim Miller?

          • Make RedZone Conv% Great Again

Ah, Miller, do as I say not as I did except for that one time Jimmy Miller….then I did steroids.

          • MB30SD

            yep!

          • Irish Sweetness

            My basic philosophy of football.

            1. Kick the shit out of them.
            2. Bring out your running back with the big legs.
            3. Play football.
            4. See what the score is at the end.

    • Alex

I’d rather have Kyle Shanahan whose done a lot of great work with several different QBs. Shanahan and DC Fangio would work well for me.

    • SC Dave

      Fuck that bounty hunter.

      • MB30SD

sigh. This is football not badmitton, you WANT guys who fucking wanna kill people.

I’d take williams as my DC anyday

    • Irish Sweetness

      No SCABS!!

  • Alex

If the Bears are keeping Fox and hopefully Fangio then Pace has to keep giving them more defensive pieces whilst slowly improving the offence. The right QB will come along when he can.

    • Irish Sweetness

Again .. Snotweiler is in the playoffs …

      • Alex

So annoying. Below average QB is generous. Weak division.

        • Irish Sweetness

Top defense … all we need .. our O is surely better than Houston’s?

  • BerwynBomber

Hats off to Howard, btw, for breaking the Bears rookie rushing record. Given our RB history, that is no small thing/empty record. Almost akin to TTs by a Bears rookie MLB (if such records had been kept). Prestigious.

    • BearDown100393

Yup and the coaching staff had him where again on the depth chart at the beginning of the season?

      • SC Dave

He did not really play until Game 4. In defense of the coaching staff, they probably looked here and said “Hmm… both Irish Sweetness AND SC Dave advocate starting Howard? Fuck that, those guys are cray cray!”

And so we got Langford, who never had “it” all along.

I have it on good authority that Fox has a guy dedicated to getting the pulse of dablog and adjusting accordingly.

Lane Kiffin was seriously fired by Alabama.

        Florida Atlantic. Ha.

    • BerwynBomber

Just Kelly but that was reported yesterday. All these teams took the fun out of Black Monday with their early firings.

Holy crap all you all and your bank holidays. Comments are coming at game day speed.

      WEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I paused American Honey two hours ago you bastards …

No workee for me. My employer has, like, paid holidays.

I’m going to work on Wednesday .. for the first time in three months.

Biggsy with the fun stat. Leno is the only Bear to play all 1010 of the Bears offensive snaps.

    • BerwynBomber

      That’s impressive.

There is something to be said for being on the field. Kudos to our Iron Man.

Hear me out! I figured out a sure fire way to be successful next year, but it is going to take the help from the blog. For years the Pats have won in part because of their shady activities. So I say we take this a step further. First we need a couple legal minds or people well versed with NFL contracts for our Legal Team, I am looking at Will and Data, anyone else that wants to help them would be appreciated. 2nd we need a couple computer guys preferably with hacking skills for our Tech Team, that would be me, MB and anyone else who has the skills. 3rd we need a couple artistic types with hand writing skills, not sure who on the blogs have these skills so we will need volunteers. Finally we will need a couple foreigners and old guys. So here is the plan.

The plan -trade the Bears organization for the Patriots organizations. All parts of the organizations will be traded except the owners.

Legal team- begin drawing up ‘fake’ contracts and trade documents for all members of the patriot and bears organizations, Front office, coaches, training staffs, players, etc.

Tech team – hack into patriots and bears organization to get all info required for the legal team, we will also be hacking into the NFL offices to upload all the new documents for the organizational trade.

Artisitic team – we will need to be forging signatures for all players/coaches/agents/front office personnel, so start working on perfecting this. It will be key that these forgeries are convincing.

Foreign/Old/Fall guys – unfortunately we will need some fall guys incase we get caught and people need to go to jail. It’s probably best that we have a few guys that aren’t too long for this planet(aka OLD) to take the fall. Also foreigners are always good fall guys and lends to an international conspiracy. So BillW, Canada, Irish, the new English guy Alex, you guys are up. If anyone can track down that crazy Romanian Barb it would be great, he is a perfect fit. Remember this is for the good of having a successful Bears organization for years to come. You will be remembered for years for your sacrifice.

Once all the documents are completed we will hack into the NFL offices and upload all the documents. Also send out press reports for the historic trade. Also included in the trade to make sure it does not appear to be lopsided we will need to trade a couple mid round draft picks to the Pats.

Bingo Bango there it is. Starting next year we will be a great organization lead by Dark Hoodie, and have ageless Brady as QB. Let’s make it happen!

    • MB30SD

solid, buy why on god’s name keep the ownership where the real issues lie?!?

If we’re going big, let’s go BIIIIIG!!

Oh, and I don’t code… I came up through marketing so I can write (shocking I know) and do strateegery.

      • Huge Bears Penis

cuz FUCK Kraft! and damn i thought you were a coder. I guess I can do it on my own but it would be helpful to have a lacky.

        • MB30SD

nah, started the company. I’m the vision/strategy/marketing guy.

Coding looks brutal, and you’re all cunts

          • Irish Sweetness

Why I left the life of coding :

You weave a wonderfully beautiful web of code, that nobody will ever see or fully understand, intricately designed so as to catch any little pitfall, no matter how unlikely … that you struggle for an age to debug .. squeezing all of its pimples … and bringing it to life .. all for the singular moment of a successful compile. There is a singular moment of joy – after perhaps months of design and coding – which then passes, but there is no round of applause or appreciative audience … just some superior who says “is that finished?” and an unseen owner who makes all the money from it. So unfulfilling.

          • MB30SD

working so closely with them over the last 10 years, I’ve garnered a VERY healthy appreciation for the work. NOTHING is ever as easy as it sounds/seems.

And creating pretty and well written code is a biatch.

          • Huge Bears Penis

the joke around my office is, “that should not be hard to do, it’s just a couple simple ‘if’ statements”

          • MB30SD

yep… I will say that you motherfuckers pad errathing and whine and bitch about how hard it ‘really is’ and you can’t possibly make that cycle deadline… because no one can call your asses on it. cunts

          • Huge Bears Penis

that is true. I work from home and estimate all my projects, we are consulting firm so don’t have to deal a lot with corporate BS. I usually double my estimates so I only have to work 20 hours a week at most.

          • MB30SD

            yep. fuckers

          • Irish Sweetness

My last straw in Ireland was when I was quoting the Irish Government on a job. Corel had closed their Dublin office (where I was a Chief Engineer), and their national road haulage database was written entirely in Object PAL. Practically the only person in the country who could help them was yours truly. Did some bits and bobs for them, and then they asked me to re-design the lot. Gave them a quote, which I was a bit embarrassed about asking for .. and they fucked me off because it wasn’t enough. They thought I was taking the piss. I was asking in thousands, and they were expecting in hundreds of thousands / millions.

Nobody ever taught me how to quote. And that was basically the end of my career in programming.

Lesson to be learned? You need to be a cheeky, greedy bastard, with gigantic balls of steel, and an overly-inflated sense of self-worth.
            (shrugs)

          • willbest

I had a lot of growing pains in that my first few years. I have an hourly rate I am pretty comfortable with, but people are always looking for flat rates. Not having a lot of experience on that I woefully misjudged how long it would take me to do somethings and either ended up working for near min. wage or feel like I was stealing money.

I remember the first time I did a commercial real estate transaction which are more complicated than the boilerplate residential stuff, so I charged them accordingly not realizing that I was going to get a several thousand dollar kickback from the title company, for a) bringing them the business and b) doing the lionshare of the work clearing the title.

My wife was happy that month.

          • MB30SD
          • Irish Sweetness

Triple them I was told. Still wasn’t enough.

          • Huge Bears Penis

Most of my projects are in the sub 100 hour range so not a lot of unknowns. When you get into projects that get into the 1000+ hour range is where you start running into problems and you look at at least quadrupling your estimates. The problem with the large project is that no matter how well you think you do with gathering requirements it is never good enough. Also there are usually several different people giving you different requirements for the same processes, because no matter how knowledgeable the users are they still don’t know what their current systems are actually doing.

          • MB30SD

and invariably, once code/recs/mocks turn into real UX changes need to be made because what’s on paper almost NEVER comes out the same once it becomes UX.

            Ahhhh, the beautiful game. sigh.

          • Irish Sweetness

That’s the problem with big overhauls, they say “How much?” … and the answer is “How long is a piece of string?” or more truthfully .. “How much have you got?”

          • Huge Bears Penis

I have been working on a project for a Hollywood Production company on and off for the last 3 years, open checkbook type project because they rake in money. They are supposedly finally going live tomorrow, and they sent me new requirements for a feature on Friday, because their original requirements were wrong.

          • Johnnywad

I’m going to HR. This is bullshit.

          • Huge Bears Penis

go right ahead. There are a dozen companies that would hire me in a heartbeat. and like MB said no one can really call our asses on it because to find a replacement that can quickly get up to speed on projects is almost impossible. I quit the company I currently work for once, within a month they were calling me up asking me to come back with a 50% raise. I held out for 9 months when they offered to double my salary to come back.

          • willbest

You have to do that if you want a proper pay raise anymore. Tech companies are brutal about not valuing their employees. I don’t know how many times I have heard the story that went like:

“Yeah I asked my boss for a 10% raise and he told me it wasn’t in the budget so I found a new job making 50% more money. He calls me up after I put in my 2 weeks and says I found it in the budget to go 10% over your current offer”

That is why they LOVE H1-B visas. They can’t pull that on them since the visa is tied to their job.

          • Huge Bears Penis

after that the company realized that and make sure I get a raise or a decent bonus each year.

          • Johnnywad

            You should quit again.

          • Irish Sweetness

Remember Matthew Smith? My hero. He wrote Manic Miner on a Trs80, and squirted it into the back of the ZX Spectrum. I never even knew what that port was for back then. It was just a big hole at the back of the computer that nobody ever used. Made millions from his bedroom, and then blew it all on drugs. Ended up in a fish factory in Holland.

          • Irish Sweetness

Any fucker calls themselves a programmer now. Object-oriented drag-and-drop GUIs ruined it for those of us who grew up on command lines and went to college for the piece of paper. Visual this, visual that. Webpage wizards. Coding for lazy cunts who wouldn’t have a clue what an E-R diagram or a data dictionary was, who wouldn’t give a thought to portability or error trapping. No exaggeration, proper coders are artists, sauvants. Rare animals.

In fairness, with the explosion of computing, more and more apps will need to be developed, and you can’t have Michaleangelo’s painting every house, so to speak.

          • willbest

Computers are too powerful now. Back in my day we had to worry about shit like memory.

          • Irish Sweetness

How old are you will? I was on 8086s in college.

          • willbest

I started programing on 486s, but in college we were using pentiums or Pentium IIs. Tight coding still mattered though.

          • Irish Sweetness

            Fack, you’re a baby!

          • Huge Bears Penis

first program I wrote was on a 286. I was 8 at the time, written in GW-Basic.

          • Irish Sweetness

GW-Basic! Me too. I was 8 as well, but it was an Atari home computer. Great machines, the best, but Nolan had no idea what to do with them. They were ahead of their time.

          • Huge Bears Penis

I started out just tinkering fixing code in the crappy games that were out there. Then decided to build my own game, it was a quest game based on a 8x8x8 three dimensional array map. very little graphics, game was always different because of the randomization routine i built. Basic storyline fight your way out type game.

          • Irish Sweetness

            That’s it. Make the money!

          • BearDown100393

25th Hour deals with that problem

          • MB30SD

I tend to shy away from hard to watch prison rape scenes. yucky.

          • Irish Sweetness

Marilyn Manson was good in Sons of Anarchy, which wasn’t really good.

I can’t remember another show where I literally hated every single character. Except maybe Opie, he was okay.

          • Irish Sweetness

If it’s a long sentence, it’s best to kill them. You’d get your own cell and be kept out of genpop. Chopper Read said there’s nobody more feared in prison than a psycho. I’ve read quite a few books on prison life, but his are the best. They’re basically guidebooks on how to run a prison. The guards only work there.

          • MB30SD

            that’s what I’d do… no thanks on the man-rape.

          • Irish Sweetness

Exactly. Although apparently most men adapt to the man-love thing. It just happens. Human nature.

          • MB30SD

yep, you can adapt to anything as a human. ANYthing. look at the women who are kept as sex slaves for years and years. You think, “fuck that, I’d kill myself” but when there’s seemingly no other option, you just… survive.

still, no on the man-rape. watch Son of a Gun (good flick) for the prison suicide scene cause he was a rape toy

          • Irish Sweetness

Will do. “Starred up”, was good too. Authentic, not hollywood-ised. “Chopper” was a great movie, but only in the books does he really get into the running of a division.

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

No doubt. After wiping out the perps, I’d track down erra guard that looked the other way and make them eat their balls.

          • Irish Sweetness

They all work for the prisoners, that’s what I mean. Guards only work there, prisoners run prisons.

    • Irish Sweetness

I am old-ish … international … a programmer in a former life .. and morally ambiguous when it comes to …. um ….accessing data which is basically being made available to you.

I ask only for the return of the HoneyBears, and that they be exclusively Afro-American and Asian.

  • Alex

    Malik Hooper has just declared!

    • Alex

The Bears can now choose to no longer be awful at safety and in fact very good if they also get Tony Jefferson.

      • BerwynBomber

But is Hooper a mid-first round guy?

        • Alex

I think a team desperately needing a safety could justify taking him in the Top 10 (just) though admittedly not at 3. The playing position doesn’t have the value of some others and I’d imagine Pace would lose his job if he didn’t work out. Trading back if the option was there is worth considering for the Bears given the extra 2-3 picks we’d get as well which is what interests me almost as much.

          • BerwynBomber

Hooper seems like the goods. But there might be a good chance he is taken between our first and second round picks.

          • Alex

He won’t make it to the 2nd round. I don’t think he makes it past the Top 15 for sure. If I’m Cleveland I’m likely taking him with my 2nd first rounder if there isn’t a QB they want still available.

          • Alex

Cleveland – Garrett, Hooker and two second rounders which they could possibly trade for Garoppolo with or take an OT and a CB in the 2nd instead. They get a lot better though they definitely need a QB like the Bears.

          • Alex

And re-sign Jamie Collins. And they still have a tonne of cap space not that it’s everything to have it.

          • MB30SD

damn it Alex, use the proper amerifuckingcan spelling!

And come up with a real/good screen name for christ’s sake!

          • Alex

            ‘poshcnut’?

          • MB30SD

            poshcunt would be best.

          • Irish Sweetness

With an avatar of a really posh cunt. That would be brilliant.

          • Internet Smug Prick #9 (GP)

I typed in “posh cunt” to Google.

Here was the nicest one I saw on the main page:

          • Irish Sweetness

            Bring back Jim!

          • willbest

Trading for Jimmy G would totally be a Cleveland move, but I don’t think they are that stupid.

          • Huge Bears Penis

don’t underestimate the stupidity of Cleveland.

          • BearDown100393

Cleveland ain’t Cleveland unless it is Cleveland

          • MB30SD

            never underestimate that

          • Alex

Not a fan at all? I’d consider our 2nd17 and a 4th18 (more seriously if we could trade back in the first to get Hooker and extra 2nd+.

          • AlbertInTucson

I don’t see him as available in round 2. Pittsburgh would love to see if he’s their next Polumalu.

          • Alex

I think you have to take QB, OLB, OT and CB ahead of Safety normally but being a Free Safety does make it very intriguing. There isn’t a good enough OT or CB to not be able justify taking Hooper over. At OLB (Garrett and Barnett) and in this case DE with Allen you have to take them I think though the Bears have a lot of money already invested in the Linebacking core.

        • AlbertInTucson

I think he is when you have a dire need for a playmaker in your secondary.

          • BerwynBomber

But my point is if he is not top three in the draft and doesn’t fall to the second round we will never select him; i.e, he’ll be gone by the time our second pick rolls around.

          • AlbertInTucson

If we grab Allen I am not going to complain.

    • MB30SD
      • willbest

        He isn’t white.

        • Huge Bears Penis

he won’t be available in the 3rd round either.

        • MB30SD

          shocking right?!?

  • AlbertInTucson

Lane Kiffen will not be the Alabama’s OC for next Monday’s championship tilt vs Clemson.

Reportedly, to concentrate on his new duties as head coach of FIU.

    Right.

I think this is Saban agreeing withe the many Bear Bloggers who condemned Kiffen’s play calling vs. Washington.

      Biggest aholes in football:

Most people learn from their mistakes. Bears just happened to be owned by a group of people from the other category.

          • MB30SD

I don’t think it’s about learning, I think it’s about not giving a fuck about the product as long as that product is making the same range of money year in year out.

          fuck that. Love that dude.

Hate to break it to y’alls… but bounty’s are a part of football’s DNA.

We had bountys in fucking HS. They were crunch bars not thousands of dollars, but it’s the same thing. We’d watch tape and the LBs and DBs would pick out guys and we’d make bets and the coaches would offer crunch bars for the biggest hits on those guys.

Part of football… and wasn’t that D beastly then… pretty sure they were a top D.

we specifically set up our kickoff return so we’d send our guy completely across the field specifically for the purpose of knocking an opposing player unconscious with a blindside hit……you know, just to set the tone for the game.

um, I’ll go with Lane Kiffin again.

  • willbest

San Fran is going to draft a QB. It seems to me you have to take the consolation prize of Allen or Garrett unless you are sold on one of the other QBs OR somebody is just throwing draft picks at you. Getting to the QB is just too important.

I would take Mahomes or Kaaya in the 2nd because the QB position is also too important. Seems like I am neglecting the Secondary but then I am taking $15-20 million and buying Berry and another high quality DB.

    • MB30SD

allen is the consolation prize? I’d say he’s our #1 target no (assuming some team doesn’t throw a crazy deal our way)?

      • willbest

I figure Cleveland is going to take 1 or the other with their #1 and then come back around at whatever it is #11 and pick up their QB. I just don’t know which they are taking.

        • MB30SD

          I personally think it goes:

          1. Cleveland – Garrett
          2. SF – Trubinsky or Kizer
          3. Us – Allen (or maybe surprise people and go Peppers?)
          4. Jax – Dooooon’t Caaaare

I would much rather someone around 10ish comes to us with an offer we can’t refuse. Like their #10, and maybe a couple 2nds and a 3rd and 4th?

Data? NB… I need real situations here that I haven’t looked into, like which teams picking in that area (8-12) have a need to get to #3 and what might they offer in compensation for the move down.

          Anyone?

          • AlbertInTucson

            Kizer at 2?

            Not after his USC performance.

          • MB30SD

not so sure. teams ALWAYS overreach for a QB. Especially teams like SF.

I mean this last offseason I was watching SF’s moves going, “are they TRYING to tank next year”. It was that bad.

            sure enough…

          • AlbertInTucson

            They are welcome to him.

          • Huge Bears Penis

Cleveland has the 12th pick and has 2 2nd round, 3 4rth round and 3 5th round picks. Do they go really bold and get 2 picks in the top 3?

          • MB30SD

that would be awesome. yes please!

I could see them giving us the farm to take Trubinsky and kizer for a QB cage match.

            That would be amazing!

          • Huge Bears Penis

if i was Cleveland I would trade up, take Trubinsky 1st then Garrett or Allen 3rd

          • Internet Smug Prick #9 (GP)

Allen looks by all measures to be able to stand up and rush.

To me, he looks like a Lamar Woodley type and hopefully can have the same type of impact at rolb. He bowled over guards and his inside hook move is as good as I’ve seen. Finally a guy that can push the LT off his stance instead of speed rushing him around the backside.

At 6’3″ and 291, with his speed, he can stand up at ROLB or play hand down at RDE. He could rotate through both spots. He is a difference maker, a potential lock down guy.

We need muscle. Goldman, Allen and Hicks – hopefully with Bullard stronger and better next year, Floyd outside with Freeman – these are building blocks of a good D.

We need secondary badly though. I don’t like Amos in open space at all, and the hyphen experiments failed.

          • Irish Sweetness

He might be seen as a 3-tech though, with those dimensions – 6’3? Funnily enough, it’s a DT like Malik McDowell that might be our best DE. 6’6 280. He looks great when he comes off the edge.

The Eagles traded from #8 to #2 last year (and also Cleveland’s 4th round this year). They also gave up their 3rd and 4th round last year. Plus this year’s 1st round, plus next year’s 2nd round.

So if somebody is moving from 10 to 3. You should get their 1st this year plus their 1st next year, and probably their 2nd this year.

The 3300.00 will now become the bankroll minus the 1000.00 so about 2000.00 which I will grow using grinder techniques. Dividing up the bankroll into units and never exceeding the unit on one particular bet in order to get a 57 to 58% minimum win rate which will make me profitable and let that stack grow for years.

Note to Jeff – I still haven’t read the article above. But this is a great thread so far …

  • That Guy

Okay, with the season over, we can officially start talking draft.

A few preliminary observations. The past few years have seen QBs essentially always taken at #1 and #2. It is possible we could convince Cleveland or SF to trade with us into one of those spots, but I think they both either stay put and draft QB themselves or else take a king’s ransom from a team further down the ladder. We sit at the #3 spot, traditionally where the #1 ranked player that can’t throw a football is taken.

We need help in the secondary, we need another TE, we need competition at offensive tackle, and we need to build on our pass rush and power run game. But all of that comes after QB. So what does a Bears mock draft look like at this stage of the game?

1 – Myles Garret, DE Texas Tech. If the first two picks are QBs (which seems pretty likely), getting probably the highest rated prospect in the draft is a nice consolation prize. We put Garret on one side, Floyd on the other, and rotate McPhee and co. in and our pass rush starts to look scary.

2 – Pat Mahomes, QB, Texas Tech. Assuming 3-4 QBs go in the first round, we might consider trading one of our fourth rounders to get back into the first round at #31 or 32 (which also gets us the 5th year option; not a bad thing to have for a QB). Mahomes is like Jimmy G in that he comes from a gimmick offense but seems to have all the tools to succeed. Will need to see how he does in the East/West Bowl, but I think he’s a good target if we don’t use the #3 for a QB.

3 – Fish Smithson, S, Kansas – A ball hawk who is has as good a chance as any third rounder at becoming a starting free safety for us.

4 – Cameron Sutton, CB, Tennessee – Solid mid-round prospect. Injury in 2016 may make him fall a bit, which is why this is a good spot for him.

4 – Jeremy Sprinkle, TE, Arkansas – Also possible here would be Jake Butt, who will likely miss a lot of the 2017 with an ACL injury. We need more talent at TE, Butt is the better receiver. Sprinkle is a better compliment to the running game because he can catch and block well.

5 – Sam Rogers, FB, V Tech – If we want to grow the run game, this might be the guy to do it. He’s 5’10”, with the low center of gravity that catches a lot of defenders off guard. He can block, he can run and he can catch. Get him on the field as an H back type and let Howard continue to rack up the yards.

7 – Javarius Leamon, OT, SC State – Potential starting left tackle (6’7″, 310). Apparently needs the right coach due to some “learning issues,” but I think the Bears have a culture that can handle that.

UDFA – Elijah McGuire, RB, LA-LaFayette – It’ll be nice to see Howard with a full season to start, but RB is a position that always needs new blood.

UDFA – Evan Berry, S/KR, Tennessee – Likely will get drafted, but a good signing if not.

UDFA – Duke Dawson, NCB, Florida – A new nickle CB.

    Free Agency:

    – Resign Matt Barkley. His six games starting show what he really is: a quality backup. We should keep him around to help the QB room. If he gets a big offer elsewhere, Hoyer is also fine in this role.

    – Sign Eric Berry or Trumaine Johnson – If either of these guys hits FA, they will be the highest paid secondary player on the market. The Bests should pull the trigger. I favor Berry over Johnson as I feel a true free safety will be the biggest help to our defense, but either player brings instant credibility to the back half of the defense.

    – Sign Stephon Gilmore or Barry Church – Whichever big money DB position gets signed, we need to sign the other in a mid-market deal. I like Berry and Gilmore plus two draft picks to shake up our DBs.

    – Sign Alshon Jeffery – He’s as good as it gets at WR short of striking gold in the draft. We should keep him either via franchise tag or on a long term deal. He’s got 5 more years in him, likely getting injured 3-4 games per season and still threatening 1000 yards.

    – Let all of our other FAs go. Make room for new blood. Seriously, its not a very impressive list.

    – Cut or trade Jay Cutler. We do not have another QB on our roster as talented as Jay. There is no guarantee that we will get a rookie as good as Jay even if we trade up to #1 this year. But we will never turn the corner until we try something new. Its time to say goodbye.

    – Sign at least one more OT, CB, S, OLB, DT and WR.

Coaching – I like Loggins and feel he’s worth keeping as OC for another year, but… if Gary Kubiak calls, I’m definitely interested in seeing him on our staff.

    • willbest

Solid analysis. But if we want to grow the run game we should stop this shit where we pretend Unrein is a DE and play him at FB.

      • That Guy

Why not let him play both? Being the 4th DE and playing FB can’t be too overwhelming of a snap count.

        • willbest

I don’t know. Maybe practice reps? It baffles me we didn’t see him out there this year at FB at all considering he was 8 for 8 on scoring the previous year. Though I guess with injuries this year he probably played a lot more DE, but he did win the starting job coming out of camp if I recall.

          • Irish Sweetness

            They had Lasike, so …

        • SC Dave

This. He does not *suck* on dline. We can do better, but if this season SHOULD have taught you anything, it’s that depth is a Good Thing

      • Irish Sweetness

He should not be starting on defense, I hope we all agree on that. I’m leaning towards McDowell at DE because of his length and speed, but he’s a mid-rounder.

I’m feeling the trade down scenario (Walterfootball has Trubisky to the Bears, Kizer to SF).

Grab a few good/great players instead of just one, starting with Malik at DE. Then grab a safety and a corner … wth an extra first rounder next draft. BOOM

    • BearDown100393

Kubiak apparently might retire due to health

      • willbest

        He did retire.

        • That Guy

Retired from head coaching, but strongly implied he’d like a coordinator role somewhere. I could see Baltimore bringing him back, but I’d happily take him in Chicago.

    • Teddy Ballgame Blows (GP)

The Browns will take Garrett #1 overall.

      • willbest

        • Irish Sweetness

Garrett’s phone will get hacked and he will be seen Saying “Luke, I am your stoner ….”

        • SC Dave

          Lol… yesum maasa

      • That Guy

If that happens, take Johnathan Allen at #3 and everything else stays the same because that means the QBs aren’t impressing.

        • Irish Sweetness

Or we trade Cutty, draft Allen and trade back up into the middle of the first and also draft McDowell. We rush 4. always.

DEs don’t improve with age, and SEA have just given 31 year-old Bennett his retirement wedge.

          Move directly to Superbowl.

    • BerwynBomber

Couldn’t agree more on your thoughts on Cutty.

Is Sprinkle projected to fall that far? Kid looked like a round 2 talent (at worst) to me.

      • That Guy

Crowded field at TE this year. If he goes that high, someone else good will fall.

    • Irish Sweetness

I’ll read all that tomorrow. I’m done. 5 in the morning here.

Elijah McGuire? I like the name, a black Jew Irishman?

My last word on Hoyer/Barkley. If you carry 3 QBs – and we should IMHO – then one of them is fine at #3. But for me the #2 has to be a guy you can win with. Look at the Raiders and Miami now. You make the playoffs, your #1 is down.

Can you get to The Dance with Hoyer or Barkley at that point?

The losing mindset says “You’re not expected to…..”

      1. Cutty

      2. Trubisky if you’re drafting one … Glennon if you’re not.

      3. Shaw/Barkley/Hoyer

Just carry one less bum at DB or OL …. we have plenty to choose from.

And he’s ON the team. Hoyer isn’t. I hope someone pays him a dollar more…..

          • SC Dave

I think Shaw is probably better than Hoyer. Than Barkley? Not sure.

          • Make RedZone Conv% Great Again

I think you mean Shaw is not better than Hoyer. We don’t know what Shaw is. We know Barkley is a Northwestern Mutual Insurance rep.

          • MB30SD

dude, what!?!?! According to Irish (and will), shaw is tom brady in waiting and hoyer’s 4X300/2/0 means NOTHING and he shouldn’t even be in the nfl. It was only 4 games man! and hoyer single handedly lost all 4 of those games for us, not our shitty D or our shitty specials or our shitty kicker. Hoyer… all hoyer.

          • willbest

We averaged 16 ppg under Hoyer and you want to blame the D for what? not holding opponents to 14?

          • MB30SD

we lost at LEAST two of those games dude to missed kicks will.

And yes, shocking that I want our D and our specials to either score some points, or give the O the chance to have a short field/amazing field position.

Did our D or specials EVER do any of that? didn’t think so.

You’re asking him to put the entire team on his shoulders and win it despite them… you 100% have my agreement that Hoyer is def not that QB. But damn dude, you put him in the superbowl in 06 or any game that year and I guarantee we’re still where we ended up.

          • willbest

Our D outscored our offense against the packers the first time. Hoyer checked out of that game with a mere flesh wound.

          • willbest

Oh and don’t make me laugh about him winning the SB in 06. Hoyer is not an upgrade to Rex. Hoyer shits the bed when it matters. He has that on his resume along with his best 4 game stretch in his career

      • MB30SD

        hahahaha… 300/2/0

        dude, facts don’t lie!

        • willbest

          1-4. They sure don’t

          • MB30SD

so he did his job and scored 2 TDs, went 3 times up and down the field, and had 0 turnovers… and it was all HIS fault?!?!?

Bullshit dude. that’s crap. Our D and specials are garbage.

    • Irish Sweetness

Dude. We weren’t actually volunteering to go to prison … for an obviously crazy, drug-induced bit of fun …. but I liked where it ended up.

But I do think MB and I are on board with a spot of murder to avoid ass-rape.

I was just surprised by how quickly it devolved to avoiding ass rape,

          • Huge Bears Penis

Extremely rare that things devolve to that level.

    • MB30SD

      I’d probably take a third flyer on him. Don’t think he’s worth a 2nd

He certainly isn’t worth our second which is the 36th pick.

      • BerwynBomber

        Valid point. Was thinking generally.

There are a couple anonymous jaded CPD blogs that complain endlessly about upper management and argue a return to shit that functioned reasonably well previously. John Kass has also written about some of this as well in his Tribune column.

The CPD’s problem is they have been caught with their hand in the cookie jar too many times, and nobody trusts them. There isn’t a good way back from that. And certainly not in this state the way we run things.

    • SC Dave

Depends on whether the forearm is included, I suppose.

  • That Guy

MB, the most likely trade scenarios are for QB and pass rusher at #3. I think we’d stay put if a special player fell to us rather than trading back,

BUT, the most likely trade scenario I can envision would be for Fournette. If a team like Carolina or Cincinatti felt like Fournette was a must have, I could see a trade up to grab him. Its tricky to predict that though – a lot of the top 10 teams (SD, TN, NYJ) are pretty good at RB, so Fournette could fall.

    • MB30SD

thanks NB… if they DID… what would they give us for the pick?

      • That Guy

Let’s say Carolina comes up from 8 to 3? That’d be worth as much as a second round pick. Maybe something like a 3+5+7.

        • MB30SD

hmmmm… not enough in my mind

          • That Guy

The king’s ransom stuff is really only for a QB. And let’s just say that happened. That Kizer or whoever was available at 3, that someone wanted to come up an get him, and that they’d give something crazy for him like this year’s 2nd and 4th, plus next year’s first.

How pissed off would you be if Kizer did well as a rookie, we were stuck at seven wins with mediocre QB play and we had two first rounders outside of the top 10 next year?

          • MB30SD

not, take the gamble and go all in baby!

  • SC Dave

Rooting for the Big Ten is almost as humiliating as being a Bears fan.

    • BerwynBomber

USC might be the second best team in the country, but hey, only four teams make it out of, what, 200? Because you know, every week is a playoff bullshit.

      #CollegeFBRemainsFUed

      • Johnnywad

It was more fun the way it used to be. They need to either go full throttle playoffs or get back to the way it used to be when there were a handful of meaningful bowls.

        • BerwynBomber

Cat’s out of the bag. As soon as they went to that BCS stuff there was no turning back, which is fine, but they will just take so damn long to get there because so many of the conference/bowl fatcats have their hands in the cookie jar.

But eventually there will be a sixteen team playoff. How many years/decades it takes, who knows?

          • SC Dave

More importantly, who fucking cares? By then, all the best players will be smart enough to sit out.

          • BerwynBomber

Semi-agree. But it’s still second best football product next to the NFL. I’ll still watch, but more importantly, so will millions of others.

The GM of the Browns has his Sonny Weaver moment.

He needs a franchise QB, and RG3 performance over the last 4 games should have shored up that opinion regarding that. But Myles is an impact rusher. Does he pass on Kizer and Trubinsky and take him?

    • willbest

Yes because its unlikely that Kizer, Trubinsky, and Watson are gone by the time he drafts again.

Now you can bet that I will be tracking that comparison in years to come…

    • MB30SD

I’d be ok with either. although pep is an all around playmaker and threat

    • AlbertInTucson

Hooker clearly has a nose for the football and he doesn’t need to find a position.

  • willbest

Kyle Shanahan has 4 HC interviews scheduled this week. Dolphins DC Vance Joseph also has a few interviews (ed. requests to interview, they don’t have a bye so he can’t do them until after the Dolphins are eliminated)

  • MB30SD

here’s my net net on the draft…

take allen or by some miracle garrett… or take a trade for a ransom if some team is dumb enough.

If we take one of these QBs I’ll be pissed.

I wouldn’t be pissed with peppers or Hooker or the top rated CB either.

    • Johnnywad

I like Peppers early but 3rd overall is too high a price.

      • MB30SD

        really? dude played:
        * OLB
        * ILB
        * FS
        * SS
        * WR
        * RB
        * Kickoff returner
        * Punt returner

doooood. That’s a generational talent man. Dude is the shit.

        • SC Dave

But is he good enough at *even one* to do it in the NFL?

I would certainly be THRILLED were he to be a top 5 FS and top 5 PR/KR. That would be the shit, and worth the #1 pick, let alone the #3. But is that what he is?

          • MB30SD

yeah, I get it. And we don’t know what he could be right. I kind of see him as a straight arrow version or the honey badger. I have enough faith in his skills/athleticism to believe he’ll work out just fine somewhere in the D backfield and as a returner.

That said, allen or garrett will be there for us (unless we trade back) and we should def take one of them.

          • AlbertInTucson

            Deonne Buchanon type?

Cardinals got alot of mileage out of him as a hybrid safety/LB.

          • Do we trust Fangio w hybrids?

I don’t. Need to be aggressive and creative.

Also, part of that rationale is that the SEA and 9ers are in their division, both Kap and Wilson were read-option/run heavy at the time the Cards drafted Buchanon, so that makes a bit more sense.

Our div is more pass heavy, so I contend we need a S who has proven he could cover.

Hopefully, that’s Eric Berry in FA.

        • Johnnywad

I completely believe he’s going to be a great Pro. But a 3rd overall should get you a chance at blue chip QB, LT or pass rusher. Doesn’t seem like a jack of all trades super athlete fits that high.

      • Sauron’s right eyeball

Yes but the little piggy that built a brick house got to cry wee all the way home.

Jeff says trading down is cowardly.

          • MB30SD

we’re talking trade back here right?

          • BuddhaJoe

Well we all like Jeff but he isn’t some sort of sage. He also was lauding Barkley (me too to a little bit) and we know how that worked out.

          • Irish Sweetness

He’s probably the worst of all of us evaluating talent it has to be said.

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

Thats because he ends up having to drink guiness all day waiting on the Bears to pick. I don’t blame him there.

          • Huge Bears Penis

Jeff also gets a chubby talking about punters.

          • AlbertInTucson

Its all about what you get in return.

        • Johnnywad

          Same

    • BuddhaJoe

Hopefully either the Browns or the Niners waste a pick on one of the QBs so at least one of them will be available. I want them to draft a QB in theory, but none of them really look that good. Maybe if Watson or Trubisky falls to the 2nd but I’d be shocked if that happened.

    • Irish Sweetness

Look at Trubisky, man. 2:28 says it all for me. But he’s young, I haven’t seen him play games. I’ll leave that to Pace.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1gDmgx5O7M

Is he smart? Does he make good decisions? I don’t know, ask the boys. Technically, phycially, he’s the real deal.

      • MB30SD

I’m all for trading down a bit off the deal is sweet enough. Going to be a on the Ock for our pick decision.

  • AlbertInTucson

“If Ed Reed were in this draft…”

Certainly he goes really high, with the persepective of hindsight.

With that kind of perspective, Richard Dent becomes a first rounder, too, instead of, what was it? Round 8 or 9?

    • SC Dave

8th, I think. But either way, in retrospect he is a 1st rounder all the way. But then again, would his drive have been the same?

      • AlbertInTucson

I know that for Dent, it was a round that no longer exists.

        • SC Dave

Confirmed it was 8th round. Same one in which they picked Mark Bortz (no Dent, but a 2 time Pro Bowler and 11 year starter).

          Strong round to be sure.

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

That’s because back then scouts were too busy doing blow and dancing naked with painted ladies on top of tables instead of scouting.

            #beforeexpenseaccountsdied

          • AlbertInTucson

Sigh. What a Bears draft THAT was.

    • BuddhaJoe

Yeah that’s the problem with hindsight. Brady would’ve gone #1 overall easy but nobody really knew. Hence the Bears’ current dilemma.

      • That Guy

The point isn’t that Hooker is an unknown, the point is that just because he plays safety doesn’t mean you can’t draft him at #3.

The general idea is that pass rushers, left tackles and quarterbacks command the highest picks. San Diego, for example, last year picked Joey Bosa last year at #3 instead of the likes of Ezekiel Elliot (a clear “best at position” guy) or Jalen Ramsey (a Peppers type player). San Diego got great production from Bosa and don’t regret that pick even with everything Elliot has done in Dallas or Ramsey has done in Jacksonville. The Ravens didn’t win the Superbowl because of Ed Reed (though he certainly helped). The Broncos won because of Von Miller.

But Jeff is right that, given a guaranteed HOF player at any position other than kicker, you happily spend the #1 pick on him. If you believe Hooker is that player, you take him. No discussion.

        • BuddhaJoe

I agree with what you’re saying (unless it’s a kicker or punter), just speaking to the unknown part.

        • MB30SD

yep, basically said the same below… whoops, above.

        • willbest

San Diego also had Melvin Gordon, so for them to draft Zeke would be like us drafting that RB

        • Irish Sweetness

It’s salaries. The highest salaries get drafted high.QBs / CBs /DEs

The safety has to be next-level to take him at 3.

  • BuddhaJoe

I’m a Michigan watcher and I loved watching Peppers but I’m not sure if he’s worth a high draft pick. He’s an athlete, that’s for damn sure. But what do you do with him? He’s kind of a jack of all trades in college but I don’t see where he ends up in the pros. Not sure he can be a returner or RB like in college, not sure he can stack up as a pass rusher either. Maybe safety but that’s a gamble and a HUGE one for the #3 pick.

    • MB30SD

I can def see this side of the argument.

I would be happy with hooker or the top CB at 3 even if it’s a bit of a stretch. Who cares if it’s a stretch… if you’re getting the consensus top player at that position (tape, combine, etc… prove this out without a doubt… as much as that’s possible) and it’s a position of dire need in your org, you take him. Who cares if the ‘experts’ think he should have gone in the middle of rd 1 instead of @ 3.

That said, if allen or garrett are on the board, have to take them (most likely allen)

      • SC Dave

I want a fucking pass rusher. Or a true Bears MLB (yes, MB, I *love* Freeman, but you know what I mean).

        • MB30SD

there is no lach in this draft… not one that’s projected @ 3, so I think we’re on the same page about allen or garrett

          • SC Dave

            we are

          • SC Dave

Kuechly was the guy I wanted. Oh well. Maybe as I’m nearing 70 there will be one of those.

          • MB30SD

is there a Kuechly in this draft? I know the top rated IMLB right now is foster, the bama guy. he seems more like the other recent bama IMLBs who are good in the NFL, but not the next level Kuechley or lach or ray lewis level.

            a 7.5 or 8 not a 10+

          • Irish Sweetness

Or McDowell if we trade down. He’s 6’6. Played DT but he’s A DE in the NFL.

            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUuvIxjVpz8

      • Irish Sweetness

But you can have the top CB in the draft, and if he’s running around for six seconds any receiver can get open. Any CBs we put out there will look better if the QB is under pressure.

        PRESSURE.

        • MB30SD

Sure like I said Allen if he’s there, if he’s not hooker, or if some desperate team offers us a deal we can refuse to move back 6-7 slots and pick up a treasure trove of pick, do that.

We won’t know till the 1st or 2nd pick on draft day for either scenario

    • Sauron’s right eyeball

Tantalizing pick to say the least. Only a mad genius would know how to use him.

      • BuddhaJoe

Although in the parlance of our times I guess I should have said YUUUUUUUGE.

      • AlbertInTucson

Urlacher was a safety in college.

        Richie Petitbone was a QB.

Ditka was mainly a DEFENSIVE end.

But the Bears also have a lot of negative history drafting guys and changing their positions.

        John Thierry.

        McClellin.

        Mike Hull.

        • BuddhaJoe

I still wouldn’t hate it, but I’d rather have them draft a guy like Allen if they can. A guy who they know where to put and basically know what he can do (in theory of course).

          • Irish Sweetness

Do we like 6’3 defensive ends?

        • Can’t gamble with the #3.

Need a guy who excelled at one position, made ‘wow’ plays, preferably for 3+ yrs, leader, intangibles, no inj history.

    • I’m def not on the Peppers bandwagon, esp not at #3.

Seems like a jack of all, master of none.

I also don’t think Fangio is particularly creative, so it’s not like he’s going to create some exotic looks for him.

    • Irish Sweetness

This is it, if you want a safety you don’t draft a guy with coverage issues.

  • MB30SD

GP, from the same guy in the pep vs. hooker tweet.

      • MB30SD

just looked over some mock drafts (walter, cbs, bleacher, etc…). fucking envious of Tennessee man. Two pics in the top 15. couple of the mocks had them take the top CB (florida) and the top safety (adams or hooker) that’s a dream draft for me

        • BuddhaJoe

You can at least take comfort in the fact they’ll probably fuck it up anyway.

          • MB30SD

            yep

          • Teddy Ballgame Blows (GP)

Not sure about that. The Titans are building something down there.

          • Irish Sweetness

Don’t you know the Upper Midwest is now the hotbed of NFL QB prospects. Wentz last year. Some relatively unknown this year from Wyoming, so we better snatch him up 3 rounds too soon.

  • AlbertInTucson

Man, USC must have been sedated at half time.

  • BerwynBomber

All credit to PSU here. Thought USC might smoke them but this might turn out to be one of the best games of these bowls.

  • That Guy

Right now, you have to figure the Bears are creating a short list of around 10 players to seriously consider at #3. On that list right now:

    – Leonard Fournette, RB
    – Cam Robinson, OT
    – Mike McGlinchy, OT
    – Myles Garrett, OLB
    – Charles Harris, OLB
    – Jonathan Allen, DE
    – Malik McDowell, DE
    – Marlon Humphrey, CB
    – Malik Hooker, S
    – Jamal Adams, S
    – Jabrill Peppers, S

They will also seriously look at probably 10 quarterbacks. They’re in a difficult spot for QB because a true standout QB will not still be on the board, but there also might not be anyone worth taking in the top 10. If they identify someone they feel is a must have, they’ll probably need to offer their 2018 first round pick to move up and get him. That could be attractive to Cleveland who apparently want a pass rusher and could likely still get him in the #3 spot.

One possible scenario is that the QB class doesn’t inspire anyone and we see a draft like:
    1. Cleveland – Garrett
    2. San Fran – Allen
    3. Chicago – Hooker

That’d be like the year Suh and McCoy went 1 and 2 and Geno Smith was supposed to be the best QB available.

    • BerwynBomber

Yeah, I’m not convinced either CLE or SF takes a QB at 1 and 2 even though each is in desperate need of one.

      • I think 9ers almost have to. They’ll have a new regime, and new regimes like their new QBs.

Also, the 9ers are a QB-centric team. Think there’ll be more pressure on them for a QB given their history.

Some team will fall in love with a QB from now till the draft.

Magic 8 balls says, it’s either the 9ers, or Bears.

Cle doesn’t have as much pressure cuz they still remember the Manziel debacle and own a lot of picks to do pretty much whatever they want.

        • BerwynBomber

Fair enough, but provided SF has its second pick, they could very well decide to draft a kid there instead of the second selection in the entire draft.

    • AlbertInTucson

      Fournette?

Because Howard isn’t really any good?

      • That Guy

        Howard is awesome.

If Walter Peyton is on your team, do you pass on Barry Sanders in the draft?

        • SC Dave

          Yes. Absolfuckinglutely, yes.

        • Sauron’s right eyeball

          You have to.

        • AlbertInTucson

When your defensive backfield sucks, yes.

          • That Guy

Ah, but you are assuming Ed Reed is also in the same draft.

Look, I included mostly defensive players for a reason. We need defense, and the draft is stronger at defense. But you don’t pass up a HOF player at any position. If that means Howard shares snaps and we run 40 times a game, he’ll deal with it.

          • AlbertInTucson

            SMH.

          • SC Dave

            Silly. Just silly.

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

Remember all the points you left on the bench in FF? That’s what happens when a coach can’t make up his mind on who to start and how use him. It’s basically why Langford started and Howard rode pine. Nay, I’ll shit a brick if Pace uses the 1st pick on a RB.

          • SC Dave

Regardless of ANYTHING else, you pass on that. Unless the point was to trade one or the other. But Howard has already proven to be of sufficient calibre to be a *star* in the NFL. Fournette is merely a prospect.

      • SC Dave

Agree Al. Fournette should be considered at all.

      • That Guy

Plus, its really more about doing your homework than anything else. You evaluate the top prospects to understand the landscape.

        • AlbertInTucson

Don’t do your Engish homework if its your Geometry homework that is due tomorrow.

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

May I borrow this term Al? Brilliant analogy.

          • AlbertInTucson

            Flattered.

I think Fournette, at least for this Bear team, also comes under the heading of “Rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic.”

          • That Guy

In this draft, I agree. There’s a ton of defensive talent, and we need to continue to grow this defense. So that is where we will focus.

But I maintain that you do your homework on the top guy at every position. From what I see, there aren’t any WR or TE options worthy of a top 5 pick. There is one RB who might be, so you do the work.

The other reason you do your homework on Fournette is you want to understand the chances another team trades up for him, or picks him to leave a player you want still on the board.

          • I don’t see any team loving Fournette enough to trade up to the #3.

The Jets are a popular team mocked to him, but they would have to believe the Jags want Fournette.

Otherwise, it’s the Titans after who already have two good backs.

Teams behind the Jets would have to give up too much to trade up.

Teams might see Zeke and what he has done, but they may also see Howard and decide to wait.

          • Irish Sweetness

Jets will draft Fournette where they stand.

But somebody will want our pick because either Kizer or Trubisky will be on the board when do.

      • Irish Sweetness

What happens to us when Howard goes down, Al?

        • AlbertInTucson

Find another of the myriad of RBs in the lower rounds where they found Howard .

          Even Forte wasnt a #1.

They have NO front line talent in the secondary.

          NONE.

          And its killing them.

    • MB30SD

If allen and garrett are gone by #3 and we take Hooker or adams or humphery or wilson I would not be upset at all. Any of those 4 will do nicely thank you, although I’d prefer hooker or adams.

      • SC Dave

What about Barnett? After all, he is the #1 sack guy at Tennessee. All he had to do was pass up Reggie White.

        • MB30SD

hmmmm… walter fb has him as the #2 3-4 OLB behind garrett. Maybe before Fangio got ahold of the d, but doesn’t sound like a fit now.

          https://walterfootball.com/draft2017OLB3-4.php

          • SC Dave

            Why is that? We’re playing a 3-4.

          • MB30SD

oh shit, sorry… had it backwards in my head for some reason. haha

before hooker? no thanks… but that’s just me who hasn’t seen us invest in ANY high round DBs in 10 years. I’m not counting that shitbag coward quitter fuller.

  • AlbertInTucson

Wonder hat the over/under was on The Rose Bowl because they just cracked 70+ with time left in the 3rd.

    • SC Dave

Kinda wish I was watching now. Sounds like a wild one.

      • AlbertInTucson

They just cracked 90 with 8 minutes to go.

  • MB30SD

I’m with NB. Doing a bit more research is making me want hooker more and more (hee hee)

If allen is off the board, we HAVE to go hooker (at this point)

“12/10/16: Hooker has been one of the breakout draft prospects in 2016. He has totaled 67 tackles with five for a loss, .5 sacks, four passes broken up and six interceptions with three returned for touchdowns this season.

The evaluators who love Hooker feel he is a safety who can do it all. In coverage, he is fast and athletic with the skills to defend the deep part of the field. Sources also say Hooker has the length and strength to play in the tackle box. They also like how Hooker drives down on the ball. They feel he is a fast, rangy defender with good ball skills. Right now, they think Hooker is on his way to being a top-20 pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Two top national scouts from NFC teams said that Hooker’s skill set is the best they’ve seen from a safety since Eric Berry. They like Hooker more than Jamal Adams, Jabrill Peppers or Marcus Maye. One scout said, in his opinion, Hooker could end up being an elite safety prospect comparable to Berry or the late Sean Taylor. Many in the scouting community feel that Taylor was the best of the best in terms of safety prospects this century. Both of these scouts believe that Hooker is a future top-10 pick.

Some other team sources said they have been impressed by Hooker, but at this point, think he would be rated behind Adams and Peppers for them. Numerous team sources believe that Hooker is going to end up being their top-rated safety for the 2017 NFL Draft.”

    • SC Dave

A nice report from Hooker’s agent.

      • MB30SD

hahaha… seems to be the consensus. Been poking around multiple mock draft sites today.

        so jaded!

    • Oh, Berry, Sean Taylor? Damn. Those are my two fav safeties since Lot.

Gonna have to do more research on whether Allen is forealz or not.

We NEED playmakers, but fuck, we also need an entire new secondary, so trading down to get an extra one might not be such a bad idea.

      • That Guy

I am sick of hearing this. We have a bunch of okay players on our defense. We have nobody great. We don’t need more so so guys, we need a stud to bring everyone up.

Case in point: Porter. He’s not a bad corner. He’s not a #1 corner. Everyone hates him because he got beat by everyone’s #1 receiver. But if we draft Humphrey and he’s able to shut down those #1s, Porter starts to look decent against the #2s.

And on Hooker. I really like what I’m hearing, but its early days yet. Plus, if we sign Eric Berry in FA, do we still go safety at #3? One sideline to sideline safety is awesome, but do you need two at once? I think at that point, Peppers is almost the better option as a SS type, but I don’t really want to spend the #3 pick on a strong safety with so much pass rush talent available.

        • MB30SD

forgot about that possibility, but that’s all it is right now right?

So let’s say we do take berry, I’d be all about going humphrey

          • MB30SD

btw, what’s the possibility of berry staying in remission. I know that sounds horrible and I hope he does regardless of where he ends up, but still something that must be considered

          • That Guy

Who knows? Can’t be any worse than the possiblity he tears his ACL buying groceries a week after the draft.

          • MB30SD

            true

        • Signing Berry would def change my draft strategy.

I almost never advocate paying the farm for a S, but Berry is an exception IMO.

I would absolutely sign him AND Will HIll AND a mid-rd S (in case Will Hill becomes Cypress Hill again)

But even then, might just trade down and get a top 3 CB and with an extra pick, a Top 3 DE/NT (Top NTs usually go after the teens, many in 20s)

          • MB30SD

            yep, I’m in on this

        • Irish Sweetness

Porter can’t turn and run anymore. And it wasn’t just the recent ‘injury’. He was getting his lunch eaten back as far as pre-season. He just can’t cover them once they go long. He’s done.

Now if you could move him to safety … you extend his career. Once the play is kept in front of him, he’s fine. We couldn’t do any worse at safety, none of them seem to have a clue. I put that on the coaches as well as them.

  • MB30SD

I swear, if pace takes this kid @ 3 I quit (from walter fb: https://walterfootball.com/draft2017QB.php)

    Brad Kaaya*, QB, Miami
    Height: 6-4. Weight: 209.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.72.
    Projected Round (2017): 3-5.
12/31/16: One general manager of a playoff team that is very skilled at quarterback evaluation said they had Kaaya as fifth-round pick. They feel he has no mobility, can’t throw well while under pressure, and while his arm is decent, he doesn’t blow them away. Two other teams said they graded Kaaya as a late third-, early fourth-rounder. Multiple teams also expressed that they have concerns about Kaaya lacking leadership.

In 2016, Kaaya completed 62 percent of his passes for 3,532 yards with 27 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He, specifically, put together underwhelming performances in losses to Florida State and North Carolina. Kaaya has some crippling weaknesses in looking down at the rush and a lack of mobility to avoid sacks. He takes a lot of sacks, and his eyes don’t stay downfield when under pressure.

    • SC Dave

His “highlights” that someone posted were singularly unimpressive. I have yet to see a QB that I would take at #3, although Watson does seem to play well in the big games. The biggest will be next week. If he kicks ass on Alabama, I’m in.

      • willbest

I need him to put on 20-30 pounds.

    • The two top stats I look at for QBs is comp% and comp % under duress.

If college QBs can’t do either in college, not going to improve vs faster/smarter players.

Kaaya’s lack of leadership is also…disturbing (along with his frame).

    • AlbertInTucson

      Ew.

    • Irish Sweetness

I can see him taking him in the 3rd ROUND though … which would be almost as bad.

  • If we wait a yr, maybe get Darnold USC

Says that Dork is basically a spoiled child, and wants to grab every bit of power he can. That canning Kelly sent notice to the league: it had the talent going in to be a 4 win team at best. So Kelly only gets 2 wins and they can him?

He basically said nobody will touch that job, because of Dork. Worst boss in America.

    • Two things I will never understand about you, Irish.

Your man crush for Fales and for Grasu.

I believe the Tall Whites doubling down in Vegas b4 I believe either of those players are worth a shit.

Shoot, I’ll take a Tall White over either!

      • Irish Sweetness

Fales is prolly history. Nice kid.

Grasu means we get Whitehair, Sitton and Long on the line at the same time … whilst also getting Massie OFF the line. WIN -WIN- WIN. We can still draft an OT.

Plus Grasu is y’know, a Center, and he was our staring Center this season, supposed to be. He got injured. Why does WH have to play a position he never played, when the Center is healthy?

        • MB30SD

The Mahomes highlight vid that GP posted below is worth checking out. Kid can freelance like a MFer. His movement and playmaking reminded me a bit of Wilson. But obviously there are tons of questions regarding such things as:

    progression/reading ability and speed
    arm strength
    TO rate
    w/l record and why
    emotional/mental maturity
    leadership ability
    durability
    etc

    • Irish Sweetness

      Skittish isn’t he?

Looking at Walterfootball’s grades/reports, they have Kizer at #1. After him and Trubisky it looks like there’s a steep drop-off.

      https://walterfootball.com/draft2017QB.php

What about the big 6’5 boys Davis Webb : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwjtrjXdEhU

      or Mason Rudolph: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JaXFfgj42u8

Rudolph looks interesting. Big, accurate, nice touch when needed, got the long ball, nice pocket presence, wheels. Interesting. Could be good as or better than Trubisky .. and you get to draft a defender at #3. If he was there in round 4 after we draft the shit of the defense …

But man, the more I see of Kizer … what’s the knock on this guy? He looks like the real deal. I watched that Notre Dame series a while back and he’s a good kid apart from the football.
You draft him and you can cut bait on Cutty, sign Glennon or whatever. Have two man-sized QBs. After that, there’s Trubisky, and maybe Rudolph, but you’d need Cutty around.

Kizer might be able to win soon. The others … not so sure. If we get a second for Cutty, we might be able to trade back up for McDowell to solve the DE problem.

Kizer / Glennon / McDowell. I can feel that.

      • BerwynBomber

Yeah, I have been talking Rudolph for a few days. But I don’t know if he has declared.

    • Teddy Ballgame Blows (GP)

Statistics say don’t bother taking a QB in the 2nd. Data posted some article that said WRT to QBs, go big or go home.

But it’s hard to not want to use the #3 pick on an impact D guy like Allen or Hooker and take a chance in the Ryan Leaf sweepstakes. Now known as the Christian Ponder sweepstakes for Millennials.

      • MB30SD

Did you see Mayfield last night for ou? Kid can straight up ball, has a Fucking howitzer for an arm, and can scramble like Wilson. He’s got one more year, but if he puts together another year like this one, he may be worth our 1st next year if he falls. He’s only 6’1″, but looks fast and elusive

        • Teddy Ballgame Blows (GP)

I call that the Terrell Pryor effect.

I was convinced watching Pryor in big bowl games that he would be an elite Pro QB. Then I did it again with Cardale Jones, who Cleveland won’t even play even though they were down to shit.

THere is something about OSU Qbs in bowls. Maybe that’s why the Bears drafted Craig Krenzel.

          • MB30SD

Huh, interesting. This kid doesn’t seem like the Pryor/Jones type to me.

          • Teddy Ballgame Blows (GP)

Did you see the Auburn trick play?

They seriously brought out a midget player and tried to hide him behind the OL?

          • MB30SD

Yeah, OU did a ton of that shit. I was like… Dafuq?!

    • That Guy

Mahomes is a really intriguing sleeper. I’m hoping he climbs, but a couple of other QBs get all the off-season love. It would be perfect to pull a Russell Wilson with him. Watch Kizer and Rosen get picked 1 & 2, take our favorite non-QB in the draft in the first round, then scoop up Mahomes in the second or third.

But I maintain that we’ll need to stay aggressive with him. If we think he’s got starting potential, we shouldn’t think twice about trading back into the bottom of the first round to get him. And that is totally the kind of thing New England would go for.

      • BerwynBomber

Yeah, Mahomes is very intriguing. It will be interesting to watch the movement of his draft stock the next few months.

P.S. Rosen is a true soph. He can’t declare before ’18.

Weird question for you electricians (I think we have a couple):
:Will three LEDs with three separate batteries last as long/not as long as three LEDs hooked up to three connected batteries?
(all LEDs and batteries are the same.)

3 batteries connected in series would have a greater resistance, and therefore lose more power?

Anyone have any idea what kind of dough Jeff makes off this?

Jeff became independently wealthy by being the Kingpin of midget porn in the NY club underground scene. A lilliputian Larry Flynt, if you will.

I shared a flat with a midget once. When I told her I was moving in with my girlfriend she said that was cool, she’d move back in with her folks. I asked her why and she said that nobody wants to live with a midget. I died a little inside.

        • MB30SD

          Awwwww…. That sucks.

          • Irish Sweetness

She didn’t use the word midget though.

            Little person?

          • Irish Sweetness

She just alluded to the fact that society doesn’t really want to deal with them. The guy I shared the flat with previously moved out to move in with his girlfriend. The rent was huge so I needed to find someone to share. My old man advertised it in his workplace, and a guy came to him asking would I mind sharing with his daughter. She wanted out of the nest but couldn’t find anywhere to live. Everyone just turned her away when they answered the door to her. For what? She was harmless. People can be so mean.

          • MB30SD

That sucks man. Humans can be horrible cruel creatures. I don’t see the issue with a little person?!

          • CanadaBear

I used to drink with a little person. We always had a good time. He hung out with the local Rugby club. His nickname was Too Tall (gotta love guys being guys).

          • Huge Bears Penis

I used to have a little person as a customer when I owned a bar. He always came in with his 2 buddies and they were basically dressed as cowboys(hat, boots, belt buckle etc.) There was a local family that was having problems with medical bills because their daughter had cancer, so we decided have a fund raiser in the bar to help out. This guy suggests we have a midget tossing contest to raise money. We raised so much money on that. He would come in dressed as a leprechaun on St Pattys day and dance on the bar. But the funniest thing I had ever seen was one crazy night we were sitting at the bar and all of a sudden He ran through the bar naked and screaming. He was being chased by a rather large woman in just a bra and panties. Turned out he ended up marrying that large woman and moved away, but he was one of the funniest guys I have ever met.

          • CanadaBear

I can only imagine owing a bar. Endless funny stories but the drunk assholes make it a labor of love.

      • Irish Sweetness

Ahhhh….. from the Illinois State museum website :

The calumet was a tobacco pipe, highly revered by the Illinois, which could be used
to end disputes, strengthen alliances, and ensure peaceful relationships with strangers. The pipe’s bowl was carved from a red stone, called Catlinite, which was attached to a wooden stem. The stem was decorated with the heads and necks of various birds and with large red and green feathers.

        Tobacco. Right.

Some draft links. Deshon Kizer anyone ? https://walterfootball.com/draft2017QB.php

Also. No Tweeners. See Jonathan Bullard. Reason for his draft slide explained here https://walterfootball.com/ws2016jbullard.php. The forecast came true during the season. Here’s hoping he can step it up.

Also first draft order forecast I’ve seen that goes beyond round 1. In short, Bears draft 3rd in odd rounds and 4th in even rounds. So they have the 3rd, 36th and 67th pick. After the 3rd round it’s hard to project because the compensatory draft picks come into play. Last year there were 4 at the end of the 3rd round 9 at the end of the 4th round, 6 at the end of the 5th round and 14 after the end of the 6th round.

The corresponding picks from 2016, Joey Bosa, Myles Jack, Maliek Collins (started slow because he missed most of the offseason with a broken foot, is coming on and is now Marinelli’s starting undertackle, which is one of the toughest most critical positions in that defense.

Here’s what can happen to BEST QBs in the draft http://www.latimes.com/sports/rams/la-sp-rams-cardinals-plaschke-20170101-story.html

    • Irish Sweetness

I’m leaning towards Kizer now. Rudolph and Trubs are very interesting though.
Allen might be a tweener? I like 6’6 for my ends, not 6’3. Malik for me if they don’t draft one.

I just can’t kick Cutty. Looking at the video above, he really can be spectacular.
We’ll be better, he’ll be better. Let’s roll with our boy, all the way to the dance for one beautiful season. Fox strokes out halfway through … I’m calling it.

Superbowl week the story-line will be “Win one for the Fox”. Too early?

      • MB30SD

Sigh. Here you go… A perfect juxtaposition to your highlight video above… And JUST as possible in any game. Enjoy!

        https://youtu.be/E7_duxRMIh0

(And I didn’t include his other video, ‘jay Cutler… Strip sacks machine)

      • Big Mike

From your post to God’s ears. Watching Allen closely in the National Championship game. If the Bears like Kizer, they’ve got to take him, say 100 hail mary’s and pray a lot every day. QBs are such a crap shoot. They are all almost bound to be awful at first. Chicago is no place for a QB to be awful. After bitching about Cutler for the last decade, the rookie comes in and fucks up a few weeks in a row, there will be those whining and moaning and wanting the backup to play. This dates as far as I can remember to Gary Huff over Bobby Douglass. By the way, did you know that Bobby Douglass handed off to Walter Payton and Gale Sayers…

        • MB30SD

fuck dat! Hooker for me. All the way at this point.

          • Big Mike

Hard to say about Hooker. 1 season of playing time he’s only 20 years old. He just declared for the draft, so a lot of scouts and draft boards don’t have him ranked yet. Wouldn’t hate it. But I think he’s a reach at 3. He is quite a ball player. A free safety that can hit.

          • That Guy

There’s a lot that will be learned over the next couple months with team workouts and the East/West game. A few players always rise and fall during that stretch.

          • Big Mike

            Great point.

          • MB30SD

he’s being compared to fucking eric berry and… can’t remember who else some HOFer.

And dude had 6 INTs this year… for OSU

          • Big Mike

Eric Berry.. wow that’s some serious cred. I hadn’t seen him because he just announced he was opting for the NFL in the last 24 hours. You’re the secondary guru. But if comes to Kizer or Hooker, a hooker is a sure thing.

        • Johnnywad

Gross man was getting booed regularly during their Super Bowl run. The dipshit segment of the fan base is far too vocal.

If you’re not perfect, you get skewered. Unless you’re the underdog/backup. Then it’s all good. People fucking loved Orton and the guy threw for 1800 yards in 15 games.

          • Big Mike

I get sick of it. I’m a student of the game. A football nerd, for goodness sake I’m 55 years old and I coach 8th graders. Started with my son, when he asked if he could play (he was 9) and some asshole Dad was trying to A) run suicides without water breaks and B) install a west coast offense with 3rd graders during the first week of practice. The horror stories from that year could fill a “how not to coach” book.

But a segment of Chicago fans are stuck in 1985. Others just like to shout whenever they get their feelings hurt because things don’t work out. Incomplete pass, bring in the backup, don’t get a first down, fire the OC. Don’t get 2 first downs fire the HC. You lose 19 players to the IR and 2 to suspensions and you complain about how the DC with his 3,4,5 and 6th best DBs on the field can’t get off the field on third down.

          • Johnnywad

I think we share some similar perspective. I ended up coaching boys lacrosse, girls lacrosse and girls basketball for all the same reasons.

Fun and fundamentals when they’re 9. Add in a dash of scheme and philosophy each year but keep hammering fundamentals and make sure they’re enjoying it. It’ll all work out for the best.

It all started for me when my 9 year old got benched for a game for missing a practice to go to a doctor appointment. Youth sports are officially overloaded with misguided assholes.

          • Big Mike

Depending on the sport, my rule for the 8th great football team during the season is that that excused absences that could have been scheduled on a non-practice night (Dr’s appointments, Homework not being done etc) result in not starting. Unexcused, parent needs to see me and explain, why they couldn’t text. Most of the time, player won’t start. 2 absences in a week and you wont play.

Our lacrosse coaches at the youth level were better than the HS coaches. I actually coached LAX (as an assistant) for a year because their practices were so well organized and they handled the players so well. My motives were to become a better coach, scout potential football players and hang with my son.

          • Johnnywad

My daughter currently plays JV basketball. We just scheduled an appointment today during the school day rather than after school so she won’t miss a practice. That’s fucked up.

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

            Yup

          • Big Mike

In HS it’s tough because they practice every night during the season. My son played football, basketball and lacrosse in HS and it was tough. The season never ended. When there was a day off, he had dentist appointments, DR. appointments, just about everything that could happen. He ended up not getting his driver’s license until about a year after he could when he took a course that started exactly when LAX ended and finished before doubles.

          • SC Dave

I liked this site. I’m not a coach, but it makes sense to me.

            http://changingthegameproject.com/

          • CanadaBear

I get your point but my issue with W@B has more to do with the team coming out flat a lot of times, no adjustments at halftime, goes conservative at the worst possible times and seems genuinely confused on game days.

          • Big Mike

Because they are inexperienced backups. Coaches are going WTF is that guy doing? Coaches don’t fire up pro football players before the game. Being flat, comes from being hesitant. Being hesitant comes from not knowing WTF your supposed to do. Not knowing what your supposed to do, comes from having Cre’Von Leblanc playing 50% of your snaps. Here is a snippet from LeBlancs draft profile ”

Weaknesses Too small to play outside. Doesn’t have desired
recovery speed if beaten over the top. Lack of top-end speed and length
could create substantial issues defending deep throws. Can be forced out
of the way in run support by big-bodied receivers with good arm
extension. Relies too heavily on grabbing and holding when routes stem.”

          • CanadaBear

Fair enough but the team came out flat numerous times the previous year. It strikes me as not being well prepared. We see what we want to see.

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

I think in a rebuild year, 2nd year staff and all the injuries that is impossible to accurately weigh the merits of this team. It always seems to come down to “wait until next year” doesn’t it Canada?

          • CanadaBear

            Ain’t that the truth!

Think we’d be able to get Watson in the second round?

      • Big Mike

DeShaun Watson? Hell no. Brad Kaaya, Miami a dark horse would be Chad Kelly from Ole Miss. He was injured so he’s slid down a lot of boards. He’s also got Cutlerness all over him. Big, strong arm, bad decision making. He’s Jim Kelly’s nephew. http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/1983522/chad-kelly

        • That Guy

That football pedigree is a strong endorsement. But QB is the most mentally difficult position in professional sports. There’s only so much you can teach if the instincts aren’t there.

        • Sactowns#1

How many QB’s do you see getting taken in the 1st round? I don’t see many. Seems to me the QB draft is following the trend of RB’s. Fewer and fewer taken early as more proof emerges that a guy like Dak can win for you.

          • willbest

Dak and Wilson are exceptions. The numbers on 3rd round and below QB’s making it is abysmal. Maybe its just not getting the opprotunity because for some odd reason teams like to go with Brian Hoyer’s of the world at backup rather than the Matt Barkley’s so that even when the starter goes down the project QB doesn’t get a shot.

QB’s aren’t really in a funk of late though. # first round QB picks over the last 30 years
            2, 2, 3, 1, 4, 4, 2, 3, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4, 4, 3, 1, 1, 5, 2, 1, 0, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 1, 0, 4, 2, 0, 0, 6, 2, 1, 2, 3, 1

Watson, Trubisky, and Kizer should all go in the first round. Though not necessarily in the top 10.

          • Sactowns#1

So we could still get a quality Qb in the second? Hmmm. Even then I’d like to see us trade down and get nothing but linemen and DB’s in the first two rounds.

          You’re fucking incurable

        • CanadaBear

As Pace disregards the facts. Cutler is a TO machine, has a chronic thumb injury, just had surgery on his labrum and will be 34 when next season starts. This year he started 5 games and had 5 INT’s and 6 fumbles (to go along with an astounding 4 TD passes). Fuck yeah, let’s give that guy $15 mil next year, I’m sure he’s on the verge of a big year.

          • BerwynBomber

I sometimes think Irish is trolling us with his QB posts.

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

I dont think so Ber. After a 3 month sabatical at a buddist monastery he’s at one with his chi.

    • BerwynBomber

Keep in mind that a 92 passer rating was only good for 16th best among QB starters in the 2015 NFL. And where did this “15 straight games without multiple interceptions” stat come from? Cutty’s publicist? Do they have one for strip-sacks too? Like “ten straight games without multiple strips sacks”? Ladies and gentlemen, Jay Cutler!!!
Anyway, by Cutty standards, he had a good season in 2015. Problem is, that is by Cutty’s standards and Gase is no longer here to game manage him.

I assume you are ranking the 70s as worst?

I can’t disagree. I got married in the 70s. The tuxedos are ridiculous looking. At least we didn’t use any pastels – mine was all white and the groomsmen white coats and black slacks.

With crazy looking wide lapels, clownish huge bow tie, and ruffled (ugh) shirts.

          • Sactowns#1

yup. Womens styles weren’t too bad in the 70’s but men’s styles were atrocious. The real tipping point, the colors. Avocado green and marigold yellow? really?!

Does anybody else want to see Eli best Brady for the 3rd time with some miraculous catch late in the 4th quarter? I would have loved to see the Raiders go the distance mainly because it gives me hope that a GM/HC can competently turn around a dumpster fire pretty quickly, but with Carr out that isn’t happening. So I think Eli stomping Brady is my next favorite post season narrative.

    • That Guy

I think Giants/Patriots might be the most compelling story to be told in the Superbowl this year. But I think Brady winning would be the more satisfying ending as its sort of the last great skeleton in his closet.

      • CanadaBear

Not more satisfying for me. I’d love to see the Pats get bounced in their first game but that’s unlikely. Next best, lost the SB. Can’t stand anything about that org.

        • BerwynBomber

Oddly enough, I find Brady much more objectionable than Belichick. Not only the obvious lying that went on with Deflategate, but trying to have it both ways with his Trump support, and the fact that almost the entire sports media gives him a pass and his lame-brained fans are so relentless.

Helluva QB — heck, maybe the GOAT — but not someone I could ever root for.

          • CanadaBear

I don’t hate him but if he never won another game I’d be very happy. Both of them are cheaters and liars. Not exactly unique in that regard but they seem to get a pass on everything due to the winning. Oh well, I’m sure a lot of it is motivated by jealousy. DAMN!

          • BerwynBomber

Hell, I’m crazy envious of Pederson and Wentz, let alone Belichick and Brady.

    • BerwynBomber

That would be fine by me BUT I do think the best match-up would be a NE/DAL SB. They are the two best teams, IMV.

Btw, if we are tossing out wishes, I would enjoy seeing the Pats lose at Foxboro to the Steelers or Chiefs in the AFCC.

      • Johnnywad

I’d like to see the Chiefs do it with Toub’s new toy getting a couple against the Pats.

Beckham jr. will destroy any of the last 4 line.

    • SC Dave

That would work, although I’d be good with Ryan doing it. Or better still, the Pats going one and done.

  • BillW

    Ah – back to work.

I suspect there will be a new thread by the time I hit “post” (if not while I’m typing).

A very weird season. As Jeff says, 13 loses OUGHT to say the team is hopeless and needs a new start. But we all know that’s not true.

This was just like a 16 game exhibition season. As such, we can’t get either pessimistic OR optimistic. At least I can’t. I think we saw the emergence of one player – but only one. We have just as many questions as we had a year ago in my opinion.

Sure – a lot of potential and flashes from several players. But to me everyone but Howard comes with “ifs”. IF Floyd continues to develop; IF Freeman stays clean; IF McPhee recovers; etc.

So the only thing I feel confident in saying is the Bears will win more than 3 games next year. They might win as many as 10. Just have to stay tuned.

In the meantime – Go Cubs Go!

(Oh yeah. And Rodgers – DEAD!)

    • CanadaBear

Floyd is fast but needs to be more disciplined (and 20 lbs heavier), Whitehair was a great pick, too. No ifs with Whitehair.

      • willbest

Last player we had that put 20lbs on his frame blew his knee out in the preseason.

        • Johnnywad

Players add mass all the time when they get to the NFL. Especially linemen. There are linemen in the NFL that were running backs when they graduated high school.

Just because Hroniss blew his knee out doesn’t mean it doesn’t work for many others.

          • Big Mike

Speaking of Hroniss, is he anything more than depth next year?

          • Johnnywad

Whitehair looks like a ten year starter at center to me. Assuming Long heals up, I don’t see a spot for him. I just read yesterday though that Long hasn’t even had his shoulder fixed yet because he doesn’t get to walk on his surgically repaired ankle until Jan 25. So he’ll be rehabbing the ankle while he waits for the shoulder to heal enough to rehab it. Not good. And no sure thing he comes back his old self.

          • BillW

I have nothing to base this on other than hope but is it less physically demanding to be a guard than a tackle (regarding the ankle that is). Of course, guards are expected to pull, so maybe it’s the opposite.

Assuming the shoulder can be fixed and rehabbed obviously. Anyway, any talk of moving him to tackle (left or right) is probably over – especially with Whitehair doing so well at center.

          • Big Mike

I’d love to find my posts defending/supporting Whitehair as an amazing pick all of last off season. I know interior OL better than any position on the field and Whitehair had it all. Any offensive lineman that is an interior linemen, who can kick outside and play OT at a high level in a pinch is a real stud.

Long will be back. Dude played with 1 arm this year, 1 hand last year. Although I have no clue on healing times from the torn labrum and its’ not like he needs the offseason OTA work. Can he be ready by mid to late august to knock the cob webs off? That’s all he needs. Gives Bears time to evaluate other players/combinations on the OL. Give’s Grasu some work with the 1s at C and let’s Whitehair play some OG.

          • SC Dave

I like all this. It would be great if Hroniss becomes someone good enough to keep. I’ll say it again that if Bears fans did not learn the importance of depth this season, they never will.

          • Big Mike

Depth comes with talent and time. A rebuilding team gets hit with 19 guys going on the IR, plus other guys missing without going on the IR, they’re screwed. Time builds depths. Bears had none

          • Irish Sweetness

I hope they move Whitehair back to guard – where we drafted him to play, and Kyle knocks Massie off the starting roster, or move Whitehair out to RT. I mean he played tackle in college, right?

          • Big Mike

I don’t know about about moving Long back to RT. Is that what you’re saying?

        • CanadaBear

He’s playing at about 225. Are you telling me no player in the NFL should increase his size?

          • willbest

Depends on what his frame supports. Some frames are better at taking weight than others. Sometimes adding weight dramatically slows a guy down. That is why they hire experts. Although I am rather dubious of Fox’s experts in this area. Once is Chance, twice is a Coincidence, thrice is a Conspiracy.

          • SC Dave

Floyd has to be over 225.

          • CanadaBear

I’ve seen him listed at 6’3″ and 6’4″. If that height is correct, I’m going with 225. He’s muscular as hell but not very thick.

          • beninnorcal

He’s 6’6″. Not huge, like you said, but he’s a big dude.

I am surprised Bill O’Brien is in the hot seat, unless he really lobbied for Oz or made the decision to destroy JJ Watt.

Boweles is safe in New York. That seems silly to me. That team of misfits needs an iron fist.

And Pagano is going to get another shot? Why does Irsay hate Luck so much?

    • Sactowns#1

Boweles is the real shocker to me. that team looked like it had potential and then utterly collapsed.

      • BearDown100393

Hard Knocks – Jets – All Season Long

    • BerwynBomber

I can’t believe Irsay is retaining Pagano. Again.

Bowles is a little more understandable as you can lay a good deal of the Jets mess at the feet of management and ownership. Not saying Bowles doesn’t suck, but the manner in which that team was constructed could be a coaching headache for almost anyone. Plus, unlike the Colts, they have no QB. Hell, we even look stable at QB with Cutty compared to the Jets.

      • AlbertInTucson

Pagano wasn’t “Buying the groceries” in Indy.

        • BerwynBomber

Most HC’s don’t. In fact, Belichick might be the only HC right now that has that power. Kelly did his second year at PHI but I can’t think of anyone else currently.

          • AlbertInTucson

Grigson’s is the GM in Indy.

It will surprise me if Irsay doesn’t blow HIM out the door.

          • BerwynBomber

Sure, but new GM’s usually want their own HC.

          • AlbertInTucson

            If you work for Irsay…

      • Scharfinator

Poor Luck, he should hold out for a trade.

        • BerwynBomber

Too early to shed too many tears for Luck. Guys like Brees and Romo have been dealing with fucked organizations and/or management (or overrated HCs) their entire careers. Heck, even Rodgers’ situation at GB strikes me as less than ideal at times. (At least in terms of maximizing an elite QB’s career for championships.)

But yeah, were I a Colts fan I’d want Irsay down to Pagano all gone. Yesterday. Or a year ago.

        • willbest

He is very rich. And medical science is to the point where he will be able to just buy a cloned leg and arm that won’t have all the wear and tear of his current body.

          • CanadaBear

I’ve had a knee replaced. I would have preferred a healthy one that didn’t need to be replaced. If you think science is going to correct the issues and alleviate the pain, uh no. It doesn’t work like that.

  • willbest

Chargers are interviewing Toub for HC. Godspeed Toub.

    • That Guy

Dave Toub and Ray Horton are the best coordinators in the league that get no respect in HC searches. Horton is really surprising given he’s black and the Rooney Rule is specifically designed to get him more opportunities.

      • Sauron’s right eyeball

        Exactly, it’s a designed rule.

        • Big Mike

I believe it is a good rule.

I understand it. Sometimes all you need is a shot. Goes for players as well as coaches. Howard got his shot, and now he is the starting RB of the Chicago Bears. Arians got his shot too, but instead of a sprained ankle it took cancer to take the guy in front of him out.

    • Johnnywad

I selfishly hope he flops. It will help ease the pain. If he lands an HC job and wins a title, I may just go on a rampage.

      • Big Mike

        • Johnnywad

I know I know. I just don’t think I can handle it if he turns out to be a great HC like so many here have thought for so long and he was right here in the building. It’s like losing a winning raffle ticket.

Teams with QB needs in 2017 or 2018 (drafting)
    Browns (#1 and 12)
    9ers (#2)
    Bears (#3)
    Jags (#4)
    Jets (#6)
    Saints (#11)
    Cardinals (#13)
    Vikings (none)
    Broncos (#20)
    Texans (probably 20’s)
    Patriots (probably 30+)

    * I am assuming Redskins lock up Cousins

    • Big Mike

If Myles Garrett and/or Jonathan Allen come off the board before the Bears pick, they will be in a premium position to A) take Kizer (please, please, please) or B) jack up the price for their pick. (like insane amounts of picks.. trade back to a top 10 pick this year, pick up a 2nd and next year’s number 1.. wouldn’t that be fantastic.

      • willbest

Lets say Garrett and Allen go #1 and 2. The Bears best trade partner becomes the Jets. Though you aren’t going to get a lot moving back from 3 to 6th. Probably just next year’s first and maybe this year’s 4th or 3rd. Is that worth giving up Kizer (though I believe the Bears are all over Watson)? It certainly gives you some ammunition to move up next year to grab a QB if you think next year’s class will be better.

Now if the Jags are also targeting a QB (and the Bears aren’t), the Bears will be able to pick up a 2nd just to move down 1 spot just on the threat of the Jets moving up. The Saints and Cards have long term issues at QB but they aren’t desperate. The King’s ransom would therefore come from Cleveland trading up from 12. And they have the picks to do it.

        • CanadaBear

If POX’s guy is there at 3, take him. If not, call Monty Hall.

          • Big Mike

Depends on if one of POX’s guys are at 6 and if Cleveland will be all “Clevelandy” and overpay. If you could get Cleveland’s “extra” first round pick at 12, their next year’s first round pick (assumed to be in the top 10) and 2nd rounder this year, I think I’d do it.

          • CanadaBear

If teams make the proverbial deal they can’t refuse, by all means take it. Just knowing the Bears luck, there won’t be any teams super motivated to trade up.

        • Big Mike

You also don’t give up a lot moving back 3 spots. I think I’d take that trade plus the 3rd. But in my scenario, I also really meant that we’d be jacking up the price, or we should take Kizer. The Cleveland scenario is the equivalent of the movie “Draft Day”. Oh the intrigue..

      • AlbertInTucson

        Kizer? Really?

His I thought his game against USC screamed “I need another year of college.”.

        • Big Mike

We don’t need him next year.  We won’t be in position to draft him in 2018.  We’ll see in the combines and all star games.  But he’s projecting as the first or second QB.
          Get Outlook for iOS

          • Irish Sweetness

We have Jay. We’ll be fine whether or not we draft a QB. We have Jay.

Yes, I’m being serious. Jay turned a corner in 2015.

    • BerwynBomber

Wonder if HOU would wave the white towel so quickly over the Oz deal. One thing for O’Brien to sit him. Another thing for management to say, yup complete waste of money, let’s draft a QB ASAP.

Cardinals, Vikes and Redskins QB situations will be very interesting. But I would be surprised if Bradford isn’t starting for MIN next year.

      • AlbertInTucson

Didn’t the Bears just make Bradford look like a LOCK for the Vikes next year?

        • willbest

The Vikings don’t have a choice. They aren’t drafting until the middle of the 2nd round, and Teddy is still going to be learning how to walk. Plus they owe Bradford $4 million no matter what. That isn’t a huge sum of money, but it does mean that they have Bradford at $14 million. I suppose they could go cheap at like Hoyer for $7-8 million, but unless the vikings are picking up Romo or Cutler after they are cut them, they aren’t going to find a better QB next year.

          • CanadaBear

Pretty sure the Vikes aren’t counting on Bridgewater ever making it back. If he does, it’s a bonus for them (if he can get back to at least the level he was at before the injury).

      • willbest

Oz is in Houston next year. But I think if one of the 1st round grade QBs is sitting there for them at 22 they would give it serious consideration or maybe even jumping the Broncos to 19.

I was pretty lonely in my assertion in 2014 that Cutler plays 2016 in Chicago (not because we are stuck with him but because we want him). The difference between Cutler and Oz is Oz doesn’t have any great games to give you hope. Which means I believe that Houston is going to be quicker to move on than we are.

        • BerwynBomber

The Bears tried to unload Cutler after 2014, so I don’t know what your assertion proved. The Bears “wanted” him because they found no deal for him. So there is a reason you remain lonely in your assertion.

True about Oz vs. Cutty. I said very early in the year, in fact, maybe after our opener against HOU, that Oz’s ceiling seemed to me Cutty level and I doubted whether he would ever get even there.

But the one thing Oz has going for him — beside a commitment for another year — is youth. A front office, especially, can convince itself he is still fixable.

          • BearDown100393

The Bears love Jay. And Jay loves the Bears.

          • willbest

Marshall was unloaded. Cutler was part of various conversations in trading for value of unsubstantiated levels of seriousness. And the facts tend to support they weren’t all that serious. Why did Pace not draft a QB in 2015 or even bring in a promising UDFA or trade for somebody like McCarron. No they rolled with Emery/Trestman’s 2014 QB room. The Bears front office was all in on Cutler 2015 and again this year.

My talk about Cutler was to address the two situations which are obviously very similar (lots of guaranteed left after a bad season) and explain why I personally feel they are different, since I am on record supporting Cutler while thinking that Houston is going to be moving on from Oz.

          • BerwynBomber

They tried to unload Cutler. I’m sorry this doesn’t fit with your hunch/narrative but long-time beat reporters as respected as Biggs and Mullin reported as much at the time, and Biggs even came out this year and reported that neither Pace nor Fox nor Gase desired Cutler.
So this wanting aspect of Cutler is purely in your own mind, unless you have an inside Bears source you would like to name.
And p.s. it is well-known that they were one of two remaining teams (the other was Philly) trying to pry Mariota from TEN. NFL guys like Adam Schefter reported that.
P.S. Just because something doesn’t happen doesn’t mean things weren’t seriously explored.

          • Make RedZone Conv% Great Again

Oz will never be as good as Cutler. Oz sucked on Denver. That was apparent. The money he got was insulting to backup quarterbacks everywhere.

          • BerwynBomber

I tend to agree. I only stated his ceiling could be a borderline top 16 guy (like Jay) but I don’t see it happening either.

            DEN dodged one there.

    • Sauron’s right eyeball

If the 1st 2 picks aren’t qb’s, bears should trade down to the 5 spot. I’ve always said this.

If the 1st and 2nd picks aren’t QBs, nobody is trading up to grab a a QB at 3rd. The only possibility would be if we had equal grades on 3-4 players and decided to trade back a few spots for an extra second day pick because someone had to grab the only elite LT before Jacksonville.

Reminds me of Sturgis. I have to preface the story by saying I rode Harleys from my early 20’s to late 40’s. I took my future bride to Sturgis on the Friday night before the official rally started (already a zillion people in town). We’re having a good time and I’m laughing at all the doctors, lawyers, dentists, etc. wearing all the gear and standing around with their arms across their chests trying to flex and look like badasses. Up the street I notice some actual Outlaw bikers heading our way. I told my future bride to watch the wannabe hard asses wilt. Of course, almost on cue, all of the wannabes are looking at the sidewalk and trying to be invisible. Ten minutes later, they’re back to being hard asses.

A weekday daytime show and a Weekend magazine, plus special event coverage. Sounds like she is going to end up like Katie Couric, collecting a lot of money for not a whole lot of work after the rating bomb.

      • That Guy

She’s not nearly as talented as the ratings suggest. She can ask tough questions well enough, but she doesn’t have any sense of where she needs to take the interview. She also does way too much of the snarky mocking tone in the face of actual facts, for example: “Climate change? Then why is it so cold outside?” That plays for the Fox News crowd, not so much the 60 minutes or Dateline viewers.

I view her very much as a product of the Fox News machine and I expect she will not do as well elsewhere. Maybe I’m wrong and she’ll actually be fine doing the same snarky stuff for as an icon of the left wing feminist crowd (fresh off all the harrassment charges at Fox), but I don’t think she’ll ever be able to do serious news. I think this is Katy Couric 2.0.

        • willbest

I think you are giving Dateline viewers more credit than they deserve. Everybody jumps to conclusions first and then looks for facts to back up their world view.

          • SC Dave

It is the unique province of the totalitarian left to believe they are immune.

          • That Guy

Do not disagree with the criticism of the left wing elites. But the fact that the left has its own problems doesn’t rehabilitate Fox News.

I stopped watching the daily news on TV or the internet because there really isn’t a network that calls it down the middle anymore. Even the WSJ and NYT, supposedly the best papers in the industry, have embraced their partisanship in the past 10 years more than they ever used to.

          • willbest

I don’t understand what middle of the road means. A lot of issues aren’t really spectrum. They are binary. And even on issues where there are a lot of experts saying a lot of different things, they largely agree that some sort of compromised policy path will at best be ineffective, and at worst counter productive.

And even for things where consensus (Which is a political/sociological word since there is no such thing as scientific consensus) exists that consensus can change either rapidly or it can be locked in to the point the only way to change it is through attrition (ie. death/retirement).

For example, all 3 of my children have had different peanut introduction protocols because they are just Fing guessing at where the rapid explosion in peanut allergy is coming from and want to be seen as doing something.

          • That Guy

This is the news. I want them to responsibly cover everything with minimal editorial opinion unless they are actually calling what they do an editorial.

I’m not a huge O’Reilly fan, but I don’t really have a problem with his show because he makes no secret of the fact that he’s giving his position on things. But I do find it silly that he calls it the “no spin zone” when the show is all about his spin. I also find the “I’ll give you the last word” shtick silly when he never gives anyone the last word.

I also don’t like crossfire where they deliberately make every issue about two people yelling at each other rather than giving thoughtful argument. NPR is constantly accused of being left wing and the WSJ is constantly accused of being right wing, but they both do a really great job of giving well researched, informative information that makes me feel I know more about a subject. So I enjoy both.

Football is a nice example because your opinion of Jay Cutler doesn’t put you in one political party or another. I don’t like the “he sucks” pieces or the “none of it is his fault” stuff unless there’s actual context. We all know what that means, we just have such a low opinion of our viewership that we can’t see it being successful.

          • That Guy

I hate the peanut stuff. My wife is a nurse. It would be legal suicide for her to say “everyone bring your peanuts and those with allergies should be careful” but there’s a lot of research to suggest that that is the best policy. I’ve sent a PBJ to school by mistake once or twice. I’m sure plenty of kids don’t wash their hands after eating a Butterfinger in the car. Kids are going to get exposed to the stuff – the idea that we can create a “safe space” is just a myth.

          • willbest

Well that too. But I was specifically referring to the 4 fold increase in peanut allergies in the last 20 years and the fact that it was unheard of 50 years ago. So that the pediatrician tells you wait till 1 year, then it was 2 years, and now it is 6 mo.

        • AlbertInTucson

          • That Guy

Lots of girls look nicer than both of them and can’t justify a multi-million dollar news deal. They aren’t picking the spunky weather girl, this is the lead role. Kelly isn’t a weather girl, but she isn’t Barbara Walters either.

But I’m not a TV news watcher, so I could be totally off base. For me, if I was looking for a top news team and I wanted a male/female duo I’d probably look at pairing something like Sarah Koenig (from the Serial podcast) and Stephen Dubner (Freakanomics).

I suppose if NBC wants to commit to grabbing the right wing female demographic, Kelly is as good a choice as any. I just don’t see their editorial board committing.

          • BillW

I do wonder if she is getting paid less than what Fox offered (supposedly about $20 million, equal to O’Reilly.) I’m sure she wanted to bolt from there and wasn’t looking simply for the most money.

But I could be wrong. Fox News could have been holding back her true talent rather than building her up. But I doubt it.

          • SC Dave

Well, if your idea of talent is colored by whether ssid broadcaster promulgates totalitarian leftist tripe, you’re likely to be overjoyed by her ‘opportunity’ at NBC

          • That Guy

Hey man, MSNBC is leftist tripe, Fox News is right wing tripe. But if Kelly is a right wing icon right now and she’s planning to turn heel, she’s got some work to do to refine her pitch for a new audience.

Boom!

      Two questions:

      1. Who are the Jets moving up for? Why don’t we want him?
      2. What do you do if Jacksonville or Tennessee take Hooker?

      • willbest

Jets need a QB. If Allen and Garrett go 1 & 2, then the Jets might feel that moving up from 6 to 3 to nab their QB of choice is worth it. Jags would also be considering a QB. Then again the new coach might say he can fix Bortles.

Titans are in an interesting spot. Mariota is a starting quality QB, but he took a leg injury that might hamper him the rest of his career. Still, they need a lot of work on defense so its more likely they go that route. In fact, they might take Hooker and then MB will be sad if we trade back.

        • The Jets are in close enough range AND stupid enough to mortgage their future.

Gotta believe the regime is all-in too.

they haven’t had a quality QB since perhaps rookie Sanchize or Testevarde.

…and now for something completely different!

The Chicago Bears on Friday released defensive end Alonzo Spellman after a disappointing season and months of erratic off-field behavior that included a stay in a psychiatric ward. Ted Phillips, vice president of operations, said Spellman’s release now would give the player time to sign with another team before preseason training camps open. “It’s always difficult to release a veteran player like Alonzo, despite his personal problems” Phillips said of the Bears’ 1992 first-round pick. “Nevertheless, our responsibility is to produce the most competitive team possible within the constraints of the salary cap, not just this year but in future years as well.”

Negotiations between the Bears and their top draft choice, Curtis Enis, continued Friday, with the team offering to shorten the length of the contract considerably as an option to voidable years. But Enis’ agent, Greg Feste, said the two sides are “at a standstill,” adding, “At this point in time, there is nothing more for us to talk about.” Enis is asking for a six-year deal, voidable to five if certain performance incentives are met. Originally he asked for six years voidable to three.

Bears Fans, Beware: Phillips Era Is Upon Us

    By Skip Bayless | March 2, 2001
The letter is signed by Bears President and CEO “Theodore P. Phillips”–the first hint former accountant Ted Phillips really is starting to take himself seriously. Theodore P. didn’t even have enough respect for his season ticket-suckers–sorry, holders–to begin each recent letter with a personalized greeting. It basically informs Joe and Josephine Schmo that, congratulations, you’re about to help refurbish Soldier Field by buying permanent seat licenses. The first line sounds like something Jesse the Body might say to open an XFL telecast: “This is an exciting time to be a Bears season ticket-holder.”

          • BerwynBomber

Pro Bowl is, I believe, a mix of fan, players and coaches voting. All-Pro, I believe, is by credentialed NFL writers.

Bears and Browns coaching staffs for the Senior Bowl. That should help.

The Bears have been selected to coach the North squad at the Senior Bowl. The Browns have been selected to coach the South squad.

    • BearDown100393

      Bears win.

  • That Guy

I feel like the QB draft class has a lot of homework left to be done before the team can make a final decision. But I think I know the price I’d offer the Pats for Jimmy G.

They want a 1st rounder, but #3 is way too high and swapping picks probably isn’t right either. I’d like to offer our second rounder (which I’d probably spend on QB anyway), but they’ll want a bit more to justify missing out on the first round entirely.

So we offer this year’s 2nd round pick, plus a conditional for 2018. If the Jimmy G takes a snap in the playoffs as a Bear, they get our 2nd rounder. If we miss the playoffs but Jimmy starts 10+ games, they get a third rounder. In most other scenarios, they get a 4th rounder. If we pick in the top 5 again, they get a 5th rounder.

That’s similar compensation to what Alex Smith got, but with a bit more of a swing depending on performance since Jimmy is still such an unknown and now also has injury concerns.

I would do this deal if I didn’t feel there was someone worth taking in the first two rounds that was a better choice.

    • BearDown100393

      For potentially Matt Cassel II?

      • That Guy

If he was a guaranteed top 10 starter I’d happily offer our first rounder and it probably wouldn’t be enough. You don’t get a QB if there isn’t some risk involved.

I wanted Jimmy G the year the Pats drafted him. I’ve wondered whether he was Brady’s heir apparent, and I still think the Pats might refuse to trade him if they think he can step into that role. But he’s a good QB. My hope would be Tony Romo II as they went to the same school.

        • willbest

A guaranteed top 10 starter would not leave New England. Tom Brady is 39 years old.

          • Malice Halice

AAAANNND Jimmy G is Brock O until he play 16. Texans shouldve taught ppl not to get horny over qb’s who only played a few hot games.

          • willbest

He didn’t even have a few hot games, he just was a better QB than Peyton and DBs hadn’t figured out that downward trajectory yet

        • SC Dave

As surely as there is no crying in baseball, there are no guarantees in football.

    • Do we want Jimmy G without McDaniels?

Don’t think I do. Feel that should be a packaged deal.

now, if you’re gonna dump Fox and bring them over, that’s a bold move I might get behind.

      • Sactowns#1

I hadn’t actually considered this angle. I can dig it!

      • MB30SD

Ahem, wait who was the guy throwing out mickyDs and getting roundly hammered for it

        • I was never against it.

In fact, I think I was the first on the “any-one-but-Fox” bandwagon.

I wanted to keep Gase over Fox. Promote Fangio. Wouldn’t mind McD or another young hot shot (as long as McD has NO GM powers or minimal).

But to be fair to Fox, he was merely suppose to get us to respectability. He still might, just a year later.

That being said, I just don’t see us winning the big dance with him.

That crunch time Puke game was exhibit 1.

    • Sauron’s right eyeball

He’s fools gold TG. Fools gold. Brady has a couple more years tops, if he’s any good, why would belicheat trade him unless he’s looking for a sucker? It doesn’t compute.

      • That Guy

As I said, I liked him before they drafted him. His performance for the Pats doesn’t do anything to change my opinion, but I would have picked him up in the 2nd round as a rookie as well.

    • willbest

      I have pointed out previously
      1) Belichick has a history of making QB’s look better than they are
      2) No team with a 39 year old QB is giving up a top 15 QB for only a 1st rounder
      3) Jimmy G has so little NFL tape that defenses haven’t had time to adapt yet (see Matt Barkley)
      4) He sustained an injury in his 2nd start

Now lets look at your trade you are offering up

      #36 plus
#50-64 (if we make the playoffs)
#65-85 (if he isn’t brittle or doesn’t suck balls)
      #100-120ish
      #150ish (if we really suck)

Answer me this. If Jimmy G is a starting QB in the NFL (and I mean that in a loose top 26 sense), why would Belichick possibly take this deal?

      • That Guy

Because its roughly what Alex Smith was worth. And because he wants to max out Brady’s last 2-3 years (during which Garrappolo can’t play).

        • willbest

Brady might have 2-3 years. The Pats would be foolish to bet on it though. In fact, if the Pats win the SB this year, Brady might just take his 5 rings and retire GOAT.

          • Brady might also indeed play to 43 or whatever he’s been saying.

In that case, the Pats get zilch for Garrapolo.

Only they know the inner workings, but wouldn’t doubt the Pats willing to trade Jimmy G.

            Also, the Pats are arrogant.

I bet they feel they can draft and plug in any QB into their system and still win.

            the Matt Cassell effect.

    • Irish Sweetness

Is Jimmy better than Jay Cutler who’s already under contact .. and knows the offense … the players …

      • That Guy

        10 years younger. $10M cheaper.

        • MB30SD

don’t bother NB, Irish would have fails as our starting QB next year if he had the button.

          • Depends what year.
Cutler would’ve been benched for McCown and Fitz at diff times previously in Irish’s Fantastic Imaginarioum

          • Irish Sweetness

look at the 2015 vid I posted. Some sick throws on there, notably 2:45 and 4:45 I think. 15 straight games without multiple interceptions. 92 rating. Not too shabby.
The stink-ups this season were after he injured himself, and in fairness to Jay, he never made excuses in his career.

He’s still our best option – whether or not we draft anyone.

          • I could put a highlight reel up of Tebus, but doesn’t mean he’s a good QB.

He was Alex Smith AT BEST.

And given his history (including inj), one must conclude that was an anomaly.

Hey, I wanted Cutler for this year too. He was on probation for me.

    • Make RedZone Conv% Great Again

Hope he has an impact. That is a great pickup. Put him in there when you aren’t going to be fielding the ball too near your own 10yd line. Could blow shit wide open.

      • MB30SD

he’s not that guy anymore. A fast linebacker can catch him now.

He ain’t beatin’ cheetahs any more. Oh, and he’s still scared of contact.

        • Hester always had insane instincts though.
It felt like he had some magical powers where he could feel where the fuck everyone was flying to and would nudge just an inch or two, and boom, gone.

That’s what made him so electrifying.

Sadly, the speed is gone now, but hey, playoffs, adrenaline…never know.

        • Make RedZone Conv% Great Again

      He was unstoppable.

But, man o man, I can’t get that image of him on the sidelines during the playoffs.

      • BerwynBomber

Yeah, it was a bit like Cutty riding the bike in terms of national impression.

P.S. I hadn’t realized how good Dawkins was. Nine time PBer? Four-time APer. Seems like he’s a lock.

    • BearDown100393

      Best HOF of all sports.

    • That Guy

I’d like to see Morten Anderson and Joe Jacoby get in. A kicker and a left tackle, they get no respect, but they are so much a part of the story of the NFL. The Redskins offensive line was even more dominant than Dallas’s today; and that in an era when the run game was so much more important. And Anderson holds the career scoring record to this day – he deserves to be in just to illustrate how important kickers are to scoring in the league. Coryell also deserves a spot, but I think 2/3 “non-traditional” positions is already asking too much.

Beyond those two, I’d put in Taylor, Kurt Warner and Isaac Bruce. I think Taylor was truly “famous” because of all the media he did along with being a truly exemplary player. Warner and Bruce going in together makes a good story – Bruce as the superior player, Warner as the superior narrative.

The whole list is pretty impressive to be honest. I don’t see anyone who doesn’t deserve to be in at first glance. I’d like to see Tagliabue get in as well. Jones, though, I think should wait till he’s not running his team anymore. Which basically means posthumously. If Peyton Manning and Tom Brady have to wait for induction till 5 years after retirement, so does Jones.

One strategic way to think about the HOF vote. How do we clear players off the podium so the likes of Urlacher, Briggs and Peanut have a better shot?

      • BerwynBomber

Said this before (and I know it’s shitty news for the blog), but can’t see Peanut ever getting in. He only made the Pro Bowl once his entire career and All-Pro once as well. His stats will help him, but generally a player needs those season-to-season citations to get in. A guy like Kruetz might actually have a better shot.

Briggs could be interesting. He’s got some Pro Bowls behind him. But I think he too falls short.

        Lach’s a lock. First ballot guy/no-brainer.

Peppers will eventually get in too. Hester maybe.

        • That Guy

I unfortunately agree. DBs don’t have the stats to get in. And the Peanut punch thing caught on too late for him to be a regular in the news.

Briggs would have had a much better shot 20 years ago, but now the only stat that matters for OLB is sacks. Not his game, which is why he even missed the probowl toward the end due to guys like Clay Matthews overtaking him.

Kruetz won’t get in. Hester will be like Mort Anderson; maybe after 20 tries he gets in when people realize how truly unique he was.

Lach will get in, but I don’t see him as a first ballot guy. The Bears are well known, but we didn’t get enough wins with him.

          • BerwynBomber

I disagree about Lach. He won both the NFL rook of the year and was once DMVP of the league — those awards, especially the latter, are huge if the player has the sustained excellence (and season-to-season citations) like he did.

Lach was named to eight PBs, and he was first team AP four times. That’s a first ballot resume. And Chicago isn’t exactly a small spotlight town.

          • That Guy

Lach is a defensive player without large sack numbers. He also has no Superbowl rings.

He’s great, he’s HOF caliber, and he’ll get in. But the stats you cited have been enough to guarantee first ballot status for Lach any more than for a guy like Darryl Dawkins.

WTH, one out of boredom and for debate. My MVP ranking:

    1. Ryan — has been the best QB for the entire year, albeit barely
    2. Rodgers — closed like a MFer but the photo finish goes to Ryan
    3. ODB — best skilled position non-QB guy in the league this season
    4. Prescott — a tremendous year no matter his NFL experience
    5. J. Jones — arguably the second best skilled position non-QB guy in the league this season
    6. Eliot — same as Prescott
    7. Brady — helluva year, will probably win his fifth SB (and will probably win this actual award), but sorry, you miss 25% of the season and finish 20th in yards, you can’t finish that high in my book

Honorable mention: Le’Veon Bell, Antonio Brown, Derek Carr, Vic Beasley, Drew Brees, Jordan Howard.

can’t tell you how big I relate to this.

          • Make RedZone Conv% Great Again

            Lol, clown.

      • Irish Sweetness

So Darth Maul didn’t die in Episode I, even after being chopped in half and thrown down a chute.. Crazy right? He turns up in Star Wars Rebels, trying to be Ezra’s master. Maul’s not quite Sith, and not a Jedi. Weird.

        • MB30SD

          Doooooon’t caaaaaaare

          (couldn’t resist)

        • I read a comic where he did infact survive being sliced in half, and he was like half robot.

But didn’t know if that was cannon or just some alternate shit.

Either way, should’nt have died like that!

Unlike all these Jedis that just pick up a lightsaber at like 17, Maul was fucking drilled by the fucking emperor since youth.

Only a few jedi could’ve taken him on, and Obi was one of them.

          • EnderWiggin

I’ve read a couple of Disney rumors that say Mace Windu may have survived the fall.

          • Snakes on a plane flew by at just the right moment

    • BerwynBomber

Poor Jay. He had some crap luck in drawing Rodgers as his chief rival. Put him in any other division but Rodgers’ (or Brady’s) and he might have another post-season appearance (or two) on his vita. But them’s the breaks ….

      • SC Dave

I call bullshit. Many, if not most, of our losses the Green Bay since Cutler arrived can be directly attributed to him playi g like dogshit against the Packers.

I would not be in the least bit surprised that in Bears history there is no QB that has done worse against them.

  • MB30SD

“Devin Hester (@D_Hest23) was not only a great DBB podcast guest. He was the most exciting athlete I’ve ever watched.”

    From jeff’s twat.

Dafuq?!?! Dude was like talking to a turnip.

    • I kinda feel bad now cuz I think I mentioned that hearing Andy get interviewed was like biting into a a frozen Siberian turnip, and he hasn’t been interviewed again

      • MB30SD

        we can’t all be superfuckingstars

        • I was actually tempted to join Artoo and Ender on their show. I think they mentioned it. Might’ve been fun.

But needless to say, my banter would NOT be PG-13

          • MB30SD

I just texted with Erik today. Dude got hooked up with a chick right after the divorce.

Dafuq is wrong with all you guys?!?! He might buy a condo in LA soon, if he does, maybe we all meet in the OC somewhere.

          • Oh deum., didn’t even know he divorced that chick. He seems so wholesome, not like us degerates. And that’s the chick that sewed him that Supes outfit. Crazy.

Yeah, I twit with him (?) from time to time. But he said he travels a lot throughout the country for his job

yeah, maybe we can party in the OC and rent a hotel and uber and live it up

          • MB30SD

Yes. been a couple years now.

            I’m down.

And don’t put me in the same bucket as you, you’ve recently outdone me by a large margin.

          • I haven’t even gone into half the shit this girl wants to do (cuz I’m sure some of it is illegal). But yeah, I’m gonna find out my boundaries real quick.

I think there’s a sage proverb about knowing thy limits and self, and gonna see.

The ONE thing I def don’t want to do is fall in love with some insane fetish that only like .01% of the population can appease.

Same reason I don’t go skiing or base jumping.

            Noone gots time for that!

          • MB30SD

you don’t ski in cali?!?!? Dafuq wrong with you?

Although, my bro just took his chick to mammoth. $300/day for the two of them just to get on the mountain. Jesus.

          • That’s why! and driving up there. And all that shit, when it’s raining usually, Fuck that.

          • MB30SD

so fun if you go in a group… especially if it’s a mixed group. You’re almost guaranteed to get laid. altitude + drinking + cold nights + Jacuzzis = strange

          • Why do I get the vibes that you’re in ur jacuzzi now even though it’s like drizzing lol

Wouldn’t mind going with some pals. My other friend was a ski boarder, and other a skiier, and they would invite me, but it just didn’t tickle my fancy.

Surfing I would def do though. That’s more my style.

          • MB30SD

hahahaha, come down and I’ll take you out there. Would love to see you get your ass kicked for an hour. : )

          • MB30SD

Nope. Kids tonight and tomorrow. I’m old

          • Irish Sweetness

Fkn divorce?? Didn’t he just get married or what?

Does he have his own Bears blog? What’s up with that?

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

That was quick. Another marriage bites the dust? What the hell is going in in the world these days?

          • MB30SD

He got divorced like 2 years ago?! Wtf have you guys been?!?

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

            In plato’s cave.

          • EnderWiggin

Artoo always turned red when I cussed.. lol

          • Irish Sweetness

            No way ….

          • EnderWiggin

He didn’t really care, but he did want it PG.

          • Lol, I can see that.

According to Jeff, between trips to Paris and the vatican, he’s always broke.

    • willbest

It was a 2 day thread and there is a lot of football news.

  • Irish Sweetness

You know the way they say if you look around the room and can’t find an asshole … you’re it?

Am I the only one in this fishbowl who would be okay with Cutty doing his thing in Chicago next season?

    • EnderWiggin

No, but for the first time in 8 years, we are the minority.

      • BerwynBomber

Could be the vocal minority only as every time Jeff posts a Cutty poll it usually comes back favorably for #6, which has always led me to believe that the average Bears fan is more supportive of Cutty than not.

        • Irish Sweetness

I read a Haugh article by accident earlier, which seemed to suggest that ticket sales would be affected negatively if Cutty was here in 2017?
That has to be bullshit, right?

          • BerwynBomber

Depends. In and of itself (Cutty returning negatively impacting attendance), yeah sounds like bullshit. (And let’s face it, Bears start winning won’t matter who the QB is in regards to attendance.)

But I could see a small bump in interest/attendance if they draft and start a kid. At least until he Barkleys himself.

          • Irish Sweetness

These kids in the draft – and they are kids – I just can’t see them slipping comfortably into a starting role. No playoffs next year with a child under center.

          • willbest

So if they keep cutty they sell out in an hour vs. 45 min. The no shows hurt the bottom line even if they can still broadcast the game. Quite frankly though I don’t think it was bad so much as not even getting to watch the bears play their starters. If I wanted to go to a preseason game I could do it in August when its not 0 degrees

    • BerwynBomber

Blogfather, Andrew, Waffle (of course), I’m sure would be down for a Cutty return in a NY minute. Plus, there are other guys like Will and JWood whom I’m sure would accept it if not support it.

    • willbest

Cutler clears my threshold for acceptable QB next year. He is presently ranked 4th on my ideal list, but he will go up or down depending on how the next 4 months progress.

      1) Cousins (mainly because I would rather spend 5 picks on defense with the last 2 on TE and OT)
      2) Mahomes or Kaaya (round 2) + Glennon/Foles
      3) Trubisky (round 1) (garrett/allen go 1 & 2)
      4) Jay Cutler

The following are not acceptable QB1 options: Hoyer, Jimmy G, Fitz, Case Keenum, EJ Manuel, Geno Smith, Christian Ponder, Landry Jone, RG3, Matt Barkley

      • BerwynBomber

Mostly agree with your list except for Cousins. Yes, I know his performance efficiency numbers are what they are, but man, he craps big moments. I mean it’s one thing being unable to win the big game, but it’s another when you shit the bed.

Credit NYG for gutting out that game Sunday but those two picks by Cousins were killers. And it is starting to be a thing with him.

And he is basically going to want max money, correct?

        • Irish Sweetness

Yeah, hot and cold is Cousins. I’m willing to put Cutty’s two less-than-stellar performances this season down to his thumb and shoulder issues.

I feel Pace knows he needs to win now, starting over at QB puts that back a year or two.

          • SC Dave

Why would you do that? Cuer has exactly one season when he did not wildly fuck up multiple games.

That was when Gase somehow turned him into a game manager.

Your myopia with that guy is amazing.

          • willbest

He has a few seasons like that unless you are using wildly fuck up yo imply 2 TOs and multiple to be 2 or more

    • SC Dave

      Enough with fucking Cutler already.

Get it through your head – he is NOT THE GUY.

    • Sauron’s right eyeball

No. Draft me a QB and have him ride pine so he can watch and learn what not to do for a year.

  • willbest

This is for GP. Dems tried to gut the Ethics oversight back in 2010. So its a bipartisan effort. Eternal vigilance

    http://www.politico.com/story/2010/06/lawmakers-seek-to-gut-ethics-office-038345

    • SC Dave

Note that Dems, i.e. Obama, did away with the anti-propaganda laws. Whe not necessarily a bad thing, the absence of their braking effect on partisan propaganda was completely obvious in the blatantly one-sided smear campaign of Trump in the election.

  • EnderWiggin

Bears put Basuby, Reynolds, and Glenn on reserve contracts. Holy shit if they are competing for anything other than specials, we are hosed.

    • Irish Sweetness

      Glenn is back ! Sweet!

He shut down Josh Gordon in a part of the season that shall remain nameless. That’s good news he’s back in the mix. He and Hall are sticky press corners that have shown flashes – he’s a hothead though. He only played a couple of games for us but had 26 tackles, an interception of Stafford, a forced fumble and 6 passes deflected. Won’t hold my breath on Bausby.
