Five Final Thoughts For Bears at Packers

| September 28th, 2017

(1) The Bears have to attack this banged up offensive line tonight, especially with both starting tackles unlikely to play. Unleash Leonard Floyd to make Aaron Rodgers wildly uncomfortable in the pocket. Rodgers will still complete the short stuff but the Bears secondary is keeping the game in front of them and, more importantly, tackling well. Quick releases mean fewer big plays. Quick releases require pressure.

(2) Tarik Cohen had 12 carries and 4 catches Sunday. That feels right. Cohen needs to touch the ball at least 15 times a game. He’s the most explosive Bears player since Devin Hester.

(3) Pat O’Donnell needs to improve upon his terrific punting performance at Soldier Field Sunday. The longer the field for Rodgers, the more likely we’ll see an offensive line breakdown from that beleaguered unit.

(4) Green Bay is bottom third of the league against the run and one of the worst rushing teams. Bears have to run it and run it and run it. And when the running game doesn’t work, run it some more.

(5) Reiterate what I yelled yesterday. With Glennon, Bears have to be perfect to win at home. What the hell do they have to do on the road, at Lambeau, in primetime?

(Bonus) Adam Jahns reported yesterday that ownership will not stand by and watch this franchise continue to lose. I was told the switch to Trubisky is coming and coming soon. One wonders if tonight is not truthfully Glennon’s last stand.

That post is 10,000 X better that the audio version!

    Let’s do this!!

  • Cuck Cooper

So what’s the Bears organization been doing for the last 4 years? Sitting? Just sayin…

  • Hairy Styles

You gonna get a haircut, hippie?

  • King of DBB

Pace was expected by the “family” to have a .500 ball club.

He is not “on Pace” (I crack myself up) to do this.

Ergo, he may swap QBs because he has egg on his face over Glennon but he’s going to resist that because then he admits defeat. It will be a stain on his record.

Now here’s Jessica and her pals:

    • Irish Sweetness

      He’s not ON PACE !!!!!

      ROTFLMAO!!!!

Guys … oh guys ….don’t you GET IT?? It’s a play on the name of someone and the idiom for …..
      ….. shit … the bar’s empty GP …. it’s 4.30 in the morning ….. fuck …. I’m doing a surgery in like three hours .. .I’m hammered … .but you’re wasted in this place GP …. let me tell you THAT ……you’ve got Canisma … .char-IS-ma ……..

(grabs GP by the collar and breathes heavily onto his face)

….. you’ve got to give me twenty dollars ….. just put it in my hand don’t let anyone see ….. it’s just this crazy bitch I don’t even want to tell you I’ll get you back next week ……

    • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

It’s not all his fault he is not “on Pace”. I think he has been “out-FOXed” in some of the decision making.

    • Big Mike

I’m not sure if this is satire or opinion. Pace is the guy who got us Trubisky. He’s the guy that built this defense, fixed the OL, found Jordan Howard, Found Tarik Cohen. He has a plan for Trubisky and he’s not telling. I think the guys a f’n genius.

      • CanadaBear

I think he’s done fairly well other than his FA signings. Some of those have been horrible.

        • Big Mike

Other than injuries. His approach is volume to increase odds of finding one. He’s also done it affordable
          Mike

          • CanadaBear

I agree with the affordable part but so many of them have underwhelmed. Like Butch, I wish he would swing a little harder in FA but I get there isn’t much point in signing the big money guys until you are ready to go all the way. Overall I’d give Pace a B. Considering the last guy was an F, I’ll take it!

          • leftcoastdave

Keep the money for the home grown talent like Long and Hicks. Give your youngsters something to work toward.

          • SC Dave

            Don’t forget Leno.

          • CanadaBear

both have been re-upped, same with Leno. They have money and cap space.

          • Big Mike

I think swinging big in FA given where the Bears were would have been a mistake. They needed average to good club favorable short term deals. With the hope of finding a gem. Re-stock through the draft. If Trubisky works he’s an A.

  • chitownproud85

Packer game day. Seize the opportunity, boys. COME BACK WITH YOUR SHIELDS, OR ON THEM

  • Irish Sweetness

    Dear Jeff,

Sorry we’ve been such a whiny lot of ninnies passing judgement on the tone and frequency of your content in relation to Gummo, and such.. It’s your blog and we wouldn’t be here without you.

    Hugs

    Irish.

My five thoughts for the Packers’ 203rd(?) meeting (of which we are at 93-93-6 parity) :

    1) Violence

    2) Maiming

    3) Decapitation

    4) Death

    5) CTE (breaking news, they have discovered a bio-marker for CTE detectable in living tissue)

We’ll win this, and go a game ahead in the rivalry – far bigger than some poxy divisional game in a year where we don’t go the playoffs. This year is about beating GB twice, and then handing over the keys to young Mitchell to put a real dent in the rivalry.

We’ll win this. Fuck the Packers, everyone!

    • DaBearsBlog

I take no offense. But this Glennon thing has pissed me off in a way nothing in the past has.

      • Sahr Gborie

Most of us are with you Jeff. Glennon is just a horrible, bad, no good QB and I cant understand why any fan would want him over MT. Even if we were to struggle with MT it cant do any worse than we are doing with Glennon at the moment.

We’ll win tonight in spite of Glennon. Bear Down!!!

        • Big Mike

It’s not about Glennon. It’s about Trubisky being ready. At least that’s what I hear from quite a few pundits. Every week Glennon eeks out a win, Mitch gets to bake for another week. It’s not like Trubisky isn’t going to be our QB. What if we get hot behind Glennon and go 3- 1 or 4-1 over our next set of games. That would be ideal.

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

HAHAHAHAHA! LMAO! Glennon getting hot, that’s some funny ass shit right there.

          • Big Mike

It was a what if.. What I should have said is what if the Bears get hot while Glennon is the QB.

          • SC Dave

Well, if we win tonight, Glennon would be the first Bears QB whose team won two games in a row since Cutler did so 23 months ago.

          • Big Mike

            I know. Doesn’t that suck

            Mike

          • Big Mike

            Yes it’s funny.

            Mike

          • leftcoastdave

The unstated or not understood element here is the tape in the can. Every game played provides invaluable tape for the youngsters to watch. I was considering this first with respect to Shaheen and each and every play being run by Miller. You’ve gotta think Shaheen dreams about those plays he has watched them so many times.

            That’s leaning the kid up.

Same with Mitchell. He gets to watch with perfect 20-20 hindsight each play Glennon has run – what was called out of what formation and how the D responded to that play.

This ain’t rocket science, but it is also not a pick up game in the park.

    • Bears-4-Ever

“Fuck the Packers, everyone!” Doesn’t Tiny Tim say this at the end of “A Christmas Carol”?

  • Irish Sweetness

(from Henry V, spoken by King Henry, written by Shakespeare, not me)

    Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more;
Or close the wall up with our English dead.
In peace there’s nothing so becomes a man
    As modest stillness and humility:
But when the blast of war blows in our ears,
    Then imitate the action of the tiger;
Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood,
    Disguise fair nature with hard-favour’d rage;
    Then lend the eye a terrible aspect;
Let pry through the portage of the head
Like the brass cannon; let the brow o’erwhelm it
As fearfully as doth a galled rock
O’erhang and jutty his confounded base,
Swill’d with the wild and wasteful ocean.
Now set the teeth and stretch the nostril wide,
Hold hard the breath and bend up every spirit
To his full height. On, on, you noblest English.
Whose blood is fet from fathers of war-proof!
Fathers that, like so many Alexanders,
Have in these parts from morn till even fought
And sheathed their swords for lack of argument:
Dishonour not your mothers; now attest
That those whom you call’d fathers did beget you.
Be copy now to men of grosser blood,
And teach them how to war. And you, good yeoman,
Whose limbs were made in England, show us here
The mettle of your pasture; let us swear
    That you are worth your breeding; which I doubt not;
For there is none of you so mean and base,
That hath not noble lustre in your eyes.
I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips,
Straining upon the start. The game’s afoot:
Follow your spirit, and upon this charge
Cry ‘God for Harry, England, and Saint George!’

    • Don’t Caaaaaaare!

Irish, you should just take ownership of this passage. No millennial will know what it’s from as no one under the age of 30 has read a book and would know what they fuck you were talking about unless there was a meme about it or if they happened to see it on Reddit. Haven’t you heard? It’s 1968 here in Amerikkka and Jim Crow is holding the black man down.

    • Bears-4-Ever

      +1 THIS.

    • leftcoastdave

Shakespeare is a just another dead dead white male and a Catholic at that.

      How is he relevant today?

  • Viva

Mike Glennon is like a “Pace car” with a flat tire, doing nothing but holding back incomparable talent.

    • Big Mike

So Trubisky is incomparable 🙂 That was some strong kool-aid

      • SC Dave

        I think it’s sarcasm.

        • Big Mike

          Then is worked. 🙂

  • King of DBB

    Jesus.

He is the Black Herrmann Munster.

  • Bears-4-Ever

1.) Absolutely correct! Hopefully we can handle the short passing game but we cannot allow Rogers to sit back in the pocket and find targets, because he will. SMASH HIM IN THE MOUTH.
2.) “He’s the most explosive Bears player since Devin Hester” I cannot agree more! We need to get Cunningham in the game as well and not solely rely on Howard every time, especially with that shoulder issue.
3.) Coffin Kicker? Maybe, I need to see how consistant he is before I slobber all over him saying hes great.
4.) Agreed, but not just Howard every damn time.
5.) Don’t make me think about Glennon at Lambeau!! Jesus! it’s hard enough to do my job today…
Bonus) Don’t bet on it. Unless Glennon is injured he’s staying in.

I’m trying not to get my expectations up just to have the Bear bash them in the dirt, but DAMMIT this is Greenbay, our )(&*)(& Arch Rivals and I want the Bears to break’em in half.

    BEAR DOWN!

    • Big Mike

Not broken in half, just a broken thumb on his throwing hand.

  • Nancy Glennon

Oh Dear. I hope what Mr. Jahns wrote is not true. I hope this is not really a “Last Stand” game for my Mikey. Please, know tell him about that article, he won’t handle it very well. He will be a Nervous Nelly. He has never been very good with criticism and he doesn’t handle pressure all that well. I am off to church to pray for him. Remember please no one mention this to my baby.

    • King of DBB

I have some video of Mr. Glennon speaking with John Fox trying to negotiate with him.

Hah, this faux account has been awesome. The baby story/pictures were the best part! Good shit whoever this is.,

      • SC Dave

Not sure who it is, but it is someone I had blocked under a different if that helps.

        • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

you should not block people. It’s not very nice.

        • Johnnywad

          Same

  • Bender McLugh

    Fuck the Pack.

  • BerwynBomber

    Can’t reiterate this enough.

It’s not just that the Cheese’s starting OTs are unlikely to play. It’s that their next three guys on the depth chart are on IR.

They might literally start two practice squad guys tonight. Guys who might make Jamarcus Webb seem like a Pro Bowler.

We should be able to ring up near a half-dozen sacks tonight and increase Rodgers’ league-leading total.

    • willbest

Basically you are saying anything less than 5 sacks is unacceptable.

      • BerwynBomber

Well, Cheese are giving up more than four per game. And tonight might be the worst shape their O-line has been in (if indeed both starting OTs sit) this season.

On Sunday both their OTs sat also but one of their back-ups played the entire game before going on IR afterward. They won’t even have that luxury tonight.

        • leftcoastdave

I just hope da Bears O line doesn’t let him break contain. Rogers ain’t the dude you want to merely flush. Keeping him in contain but pressured could lead to picks.

          • beninnorcal

I think you mean the Bears D line.

          • leftcoastdave

Duh, yea? Not enough coffee yet.

Have the middle three linemen play a careful penetrating contain while someone else gerbils him (to coin an apt analogy?).

          • beninnorcal

Sorry, Dave, I knew what you met, a bit dickish of me.

          • leftcoastdave

No, glad to have had it corrected so that I could expound and perhaps add a new idiom to the vernacular.

      • AlbertInTucson

He got sacked plenty last week and still won.

    • AlbertInTucson

They may have to start a couple of guys who are, ostensibly, guards at both tackle spots and a guy fresh off the practice squad at guard.

So I expect Rodgers will be getting rid off the ball early then avoid a sack or two to extend plays for bigger gains.

      • CanadaBear

        Lots of 3-step drops

        • That’s all you need for back shoulder throws.

          • CanadaBear

Would love to see a DB pick off one of those in stride.

      • AlbertInTucson

The guy they signed was off the CARDINALS” practice squad.

He couldn’t crack the Arizona O-line?

        Yeesh.

  • leftcoastdave

I have this thought that tonight might be the perfect game for RRH to break out. He’s crazy quick for his size (having bulked up) and he’s long at 6’7. The only thing holding him back is that he is not yet learned up on his technique and hand fighting. But I’d love to see him be up in Rogers face rushing from the left DE position on sure passing downs. He is showing the ability to penetrate and those long arms have already batted down one pass and blocked a punt.

  • Big Mike

    FTP

  • CanadaBear

As usual the national media is blowing the Fudgies again this year. Hopefully the Beloved flip the script. I’ve watched a couple of the Fudgies games this year and Rodgers looked semi-rattled a couple of times due to the pressure. Let’s hope the Beloved can pressure him all game and put him on his back a few times. This game is winnable. Let’s hope the Bears rise to the occasion.

    • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

maybe we get lucky and someone will “accidentally” break his collarbone again.

    • Big Mike

      but they keep winning. FTP

    • BerwynBomber

Yeah, the annual overrating of the Cheese chaps my ass. But I also get it. The Rodgers Effect. And let’s be honest, they were one of the final four last year largely because he played a huge role in their beating two other post-season teams who were superior to them (DAL, NYG).

But even a great, HoF QB can only get you so far. Just ask New Orleans.

      • Big Mike

I swear, everything is based on fantasy football stats.

“Mike Ditka. Not the brightest bulb in the chandelier.” – Jeff

He is probably suffering from CTE, if you need to reconcile his conservative positions with his greatness as a player and the only coach to bring home a Lombardi trophy for the organization.

    • SC Dave

He was a great player to be sure.

    • evantonio

would explain trading his entire draft for ricky williams

  • Viva

How many hard hits to Jordan and Tarik coming out of the backfield could be avoided if Glennon didn’t lock into his receivers? How many of Glennon’s picks can we attribute to his tendancy to telegraph where the ball is going? In hockey, what Glennon does has a name….suicide pass.

“And the right can have national anthem. We will take This Land Is Your
Land, God Bless America & America the Beautiful (all better songs).” – Jeff

God Bless America going with the left he says without a hint of irony.

    • leftcoastdave

Any plan to sing “God Bless America” at a high school sporting event would be attacked in court by the same people who hate the national anthem.

And of course, “This Land is Your Land” was written by Woody Guthrie and made famous by that lovable commie Pete Segar during the great depression. A nice sentimental commie song if ever there was one. For that matter, the Weavers made it a regular part of their act as well.

      • Sactowns#1

Argh.. .angry old white guys unite!!!! Btw- I would contend the left has a much better claim to Christianity/religiousness than the right.

        • willbest

heh, I will go get some popcorn.

          • evantonio

you have to admit, our national anthem isn’t the most melodic of anthems.

“I love people who defend college sports even when the whole enterprise is revealed to be disgustingly corrupt on a yearly basis.” – Jeff

College sports used to be about rivalries and tradition. It was corrupted by the NCAA to be about money. I think the corruption is irreparable incidentally. The problem for the NCAA is it can’t just be spun off in some sort of minor league system. It would lose a large chunk of its fan support.

    • BerwynBomber

Agree but I wonder if some sort of hybrid solution could be found.

Maybe eliminate all athletic scholarships but offer a standard four year contract to any recruit for the big time sports of hoops and pigskin. So basically you would turn these kids into staff employees of the university and do away with the NCAA’s outdated notions of the scholar-athlete.

    • Big Mike

Fuck the NCAA. On par with FIFA.

      • AlbertInTucson

        The FBI should investigate THEM.

  • willbest

Its really hard for me to predict a Bears win today. I know Rodgers would be better off standing behind tackling dummies, but he is still Aaron Fucking Rodgers. He is going to pull 25 points out of his ass, and I just don’t see our offense matching that. Howards shoulder isn’t going to be recovered by tonight so I don’t know what kind of abuse he is going to be able to take. The Packers passing defense is pretty good. Maybe its because their run defense is awful, but we certainly aren’t going to be in a position to test that theory.

I honestly expect them to do a better job selling out against the run than the Steelers did though. I am thinking 24-17 Packers, unless the Bears D or special teams come up with monster game.

    • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

Howard was not on the injury report. My guess is he just had a stinger. Unfortunately they added Hicks as questionable with a foot injury

      • Can’t wait till we have the CJ Wilson, Amos, McMmanis trifecta

        • Big Mike

No, that is armegeddon. Soon the guy with the dash in his name will be in. I refuse to memorize his name.

          • Sahr Gborie

            DH-C

      • beninnorcal

Not having Hicks would be pretty bad. I think he’s currently my favorite player on D.

    • Cubsnlinux

I agree. It’s hard for me to see all this optimism. I can easily see the Packers win tonight and continue to win until we at least field a competent QB. Packers win by two scores.

      • AlbertInTucson

        “Optimism”. Not my major.

        • CanadaBear

I think it has something to do with being over 60! I’m right there with ya. Whenever someone younger starts giving me the gears (and it happens a lot), I always tell them that once you hit 60 you’ve got no more fucks to give.

          • AlbertInTucson

Especially being a Bears/Sox fan for more than 5 decades.

Still stunned that I have seen the Hawks win 3 Stanley Cups.

          • Big Mike

Did you at least enjoy the Bulls?

          • AlbertInTucson

I followed closely when I lived back there but we’re talking Chet Walker, Bob Love, Jerry Sloan, Norm Van Lier Tom Boerwinkle and Dennis Awtry days.

Saw them beat the Wilt/Jerry West Lakers in a playoff game at the stadium.

I was only a casual fan during the Jordan years and now the NBA basically isn’t even on my radar.

          • Big Mike

Those were the first Bulls I followed. Went to Chet Walkers 56 point game. Dad took me. Saw 2-3 games a year. Followed on WIND 560 first on your dial. Playoffs weren’t even broadcast. Hates Rick Barry and Golden State

Second balcony was great for watching the Hawks. You could see breakaways developing before the players did.

Al Melgard at the Mighty Chicago Stadium Organ.

When Nancy Faust took over, they had to put in a smaller one for her to play but she DID eventually play the big one.

The small rink was also an interesting anomaly. Watching teams used to the bigger ice get crushed
            Mike

          • AlbertInTucson

Yeah, the standardizing of rinks has really evened out “Home Ice Advantage “.

          • CanadaBear

One thing the Bears/Sox have in common is the year they won it all they wiped out the competition in the playoffs.

          • Big Mike

Absolutely zero fucks. Add in some fuck you money and I have to be careful not to piss every one off. Glennon lights it up, Bears crush Packers. I major in optimism.

          • Sahr Gborie

Im getting me some kool-aid IV…Beloved win in a shut out

          • CanadaBear

I really hope you’re right! I’d like nothing more than to read the stories the next day from all the writers that have been nobbing Rodgers forever.

          • Big Mike

I don’t think it will happen. But what the heck.

          • AlbertInTucson

Dirty job but, SOMEBODY has to do it.

          • leftcoastdave

I believe that the playbook has evolved nicely from smash mouth and dink throws, to Tarik the Freak threat, to Tarik the Freak decoy. Now expect more throws to come out of the basic Heavy set.
I too am optimistic because I see intelligence in the game plan which is evolving as the players gel.

        Used to be 50-50.

But now more like 90% chance they play; how effective is another question

        • CanadaBear

Forgot about that. I try not to hate them for all the obvious reasons and then you remind me of this. BB is a brilliant coach but something tells me he’s a little less than brilliant in real life.

  • Cubsnlinux

Ahh.. I changed my mind.. Shaheen with the game winning touchdown with 5 seconds on the clock. Bears win 21-20. You heard it here first!

  • Don’t Caaaaaaare!

Sac, I’m coming for you. Tarik is coming for you. Cutty is playing in London, that’s 3 TD’s right there. Stafford is playing in a dome….boom.
I just have to decide between Sterling Shepherd and Devante Parker at WR.
Which will you have Sac, the knife or the gun?

      Hey, I recognize that.

Fish are gonna get slammed in London

      • Don’t Caaaaaaare!

        incorrect!

        • King of DBB

It’s all there: the throwing off the back foot, the disgusted walk to the sideline, the picks that come just out of hubris. The full gamut of dooooooont caaaare.

          • Don’t Caaaaaaare!

that pick was at the end of the game, just trying to make something happen. they were down 20.
Dolphins O line is really rough right now due to injuries. They’ll come out swinging early. The Jets D was tough, held Ajari to 18yards on the ground.

Too much WR screen to Landry and not enough vertical stuff. That will change in London.

    • Sactowns#1

Don’t matter because I have Watson, the next generation of elite QB’s, taking me to the promised land!!

  • Cuck Coooer

    Bonus? Hahaha.

Only on da blog is last threads news a bonus. By the way gents, if your boss comes to you at the end of the year and gives you a bonus, flip him the bird and tell him he’s been under paying you.

    ¿quién es el más lujurioso?

Rick Pitino, Jerry Sandusky o Hugh Hefner?

    • Don’t Caaaaaaare!

      they all loved different types:
Pitino loved dirty hookers and coeds
Sandusky loved at risk youth ass
Hef loved star struck aspiring models willing to do anything to “make it”

My grandfather’s in town and we’re headed up to my brother’s in Sonoma to spend the afternoon/evening with his family. Problem is that they cut the cable cord two years ago. Luckily, this game will be streaming on Amazon Prime, so I’ll let you all know how that worked out.

    • SC Dave

I thought about using that, but am probably heading out instead. After all, it *is* pint night and I can get the good stuff for $2.75.

      • Johnnywad

        Oh boy. That spells trouble.

    • EnderWiggin

I THINK the game will also be on CBS, so any ‘ol analog TV should do.

      • AlbertInTucson

Not Analog, unless you have an digital converter but, yes, it IS available over-the-air via CBS affiliates.

        • willbest

At least its not NBC. I don’t know where the hell they broadcast from but I need to move my antenna to the other side of the room and cover it with tin foil old school style in order to pick that station up.

          • AlbertInTucson

I have that issue here, amplified by the mountain ranges that encircle Tucson.

I’d need an outdoor antenna to get the NBC affiliate from where I live, and a TV engineer told me to forget about getting FOX over the air where I am.

Maybe we can reconfigure this to ration out Jeff’s Glennon hate

  • FF…
Go Howard! Was gonna sit him for various, but couldn’t do.
What a stud. Ride or die.

    Vadgers, muerto.

This team has a good offensive line. Stop thinking it’s terrible.

    Any word on Sitton?

The way Steelers got gashed last week on ground, and from paying attention to Sowell Glo (Or Sowell Train), the interior might be a strength again.

Maybe they were playing inspired, but Sowell-WC-Long can blow ppl off the line, which means those long stretch runs can come fast and furious for Howard and Cohen.

Sitton is gravy at this point.

And although our WRs have stone hands, they blocked well last week too. Thompson and Bellamy both sealed their dudes to spring the big runs o Cohen and Howard in OT.

    • willbest

We should run 7 o-line, 2 TE set.

      • Sowell is a swing OT, I think, so might work

But Shaheen blocked well too, which was encouraging.

If Puke are stupid enough to run that “nitro” D against us, we’re gonna run for 300 yds.

        • leftcoastdave

YPC of 5 gets it done.

Also, Shaheen catches 50% of his targets for TD.

  • Malice Halice

WE STARTIN MITCHELL! WE STARTIN MITCHELL!

    • Malice Halice

      Never mind

    • Nancy Glennon

      His name is Michael.

  • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

Even God does not want to see Glennon play!
