DaBearsPod Week 5: Hope & Tom Petty [AUDIO]

| October 6th, 2017

ON THIS EPISODE:

  • Two beautiful songs from Tom Petty. “Southern Accents” sung by Johnny Cash and “Walls” from the film, She’s the One. (Is the latter a great song? I don’t know. But it reminds me of one of the greatest bars in the history of the planet and makes me happy. RIP Tom. RIP McHale’s.)
  • Jeff discusses Mitch Trubisky and…hope.
  • Reverend Dave tells you how he almost died once because he’s a fucking idiot.

  • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

I am cautiously optimistic waiting for this game. Honestly I feel like Charlie Brown running to kick the football. I still half expect the Bears to pull a Lucy and yank the football away at the last second by playing Glennon.

    • Sahr Gborie

If the team plays like the Giraffe Gaff is still under center then we have a problem.

Like Jeff said we are looking for signs that we will be able to compete next year with another good draft and some FA additions.

I’m excited. I’m giddy. We have a franchise QB. Live in the moment man.

      • ButtonShoes

Do we really have a franchise QB? To me that remains to be seen. Trubisky’s got to prove it. Let’s hope he is. In any case, at least it’s not Mike fucking Glennon.

      • BearDown100393

The same was said for Rex Grossman. Let’s play this one out first and just wish Mitch good luck.

    • Scharfinator
  • Scharfinator

Was it Andrew or Jeff who said the Bucs would lose a game thanks to Folk? Good fucking call, whichever one of you said it.

    • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

It was Jeff, and he was sure to point it out on his twit feed.

      • CanadaBear

Gloating is a Jeff specialty. I guess that’s what it takes in this dog-eat-dog world of sports blogging. Of course, when he’s wrong it never is mentioned again.

        • AlbertInTucson

Not exactly a “Nostradamus Level” prediction.

          • CanadaBear

I don’t get the gloating and I told you so’s. I have no trouble remembering when I’m wrong or correct. I just think it’s a bad look but I was only half-kidding about sports blogosphere. I’m sure you have to do something to get noticed.

        • Funny considering that for 6 yrs he was Cutler’s biggest backer. He should apologize for that every time he gloats over predicting a has-been K flopping.

    • BearDown100393

      The Knoblauch of kickers.

      • AlbertInTucson

Before Knoblauch there was Steve Sax.

Before Steve Sax, there was Mike Andrews.

Dale Murphy moved to CF because as a catcher, he got the yips about tossing the ball back to the pitcher.

        • No way! There really was a catcher that happened to?

Thought that was just a myth lol

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COqXNQiIHgU

Also, in little league our catcher got hurt mid-season, and the coach for some reason got the crazy idea of making me a catcher even though I never been one.

I held my own. He started saying ,”If I knew you’d be this good at catcher, I’d have put you there from the start”. At which point, I began ‘over throwing’ the pitcher and 2nd baseman.

No more talk of me at catcher. Moved back to center field. Mission accomplished.

  • Sahr Gborie

Am I the only one worried about Charles Leno’s & Bobby Massie’s performance come Monday?

    • Bender McLugh

      yes! kidding

    • SC Dave

      Not me.

    • Johnnywad

Has there ever been a game they’ve been on the roster that doesn’t cross your mind?

    • ButtonShoes

Nope! They’re both turnstiles. Worrying about their performance is only natural.

    • Have they given up a lot of sacks?

Also, the GREAT benefit of a mobile QB is that his launch point isn’t going to be static.

If the DEs fly by him, guess what?

He’s stepping up and sprinting for 5-10 yds looking to throw bombs downfield.

The reason Vadgers is so hard to stop is because the DEs can’t just crash. They need to stay in their lanes because if they lose contain, Vadgers is on the run looking downfield or running for an easy 1st.

Nice to have that on our team finally.

edit. I also firmly predict a HEAVY dose of bootlegs.

And with Howard and Cohen in the backfield, the Ds are going to have to respect that , which will slow their pass rush and make it harder to locate Trub.

Ds no longer have an X marks the spot where the QB will be at

    • Irish Sweetness

Well said. People are under the impression we have the Hogs out there. We don’t. We settled for Leno, and Massie can be upgraded. Have to invest in Mitchell now. Build that line.

Please disregard TBC’s saltiness today. He was laid off from his job at the papermill and he’s just been in the dumps so much lately. I tried to make him his favorite green and gold pancakes and he snapped.
“what’s the point mom, I mean, we’re just going to lose in the playoffs once again because they can’t support Aaron”.
It scared us because we know he has the Packers and the paper mill. He doesn’t even have Susan anymore. She left him for a city fella from Milwaukee over a year ago.

My son has been having a hard time lately also. Maybe we should start a support group. We should get coffee sometime and discuss. It’s funny how easily them bitches now days leave their men once things get a little bumpy.

“Some people you just want to punch directly in the face until your hand goes numb.” – Jeff

Jeff wants to beat the shit out of a brown person.

    • SC Dave

Twitter truly brings out the loser in all its participants.

      • Sactowns#1

Especially our #1 loser and twitter user, trump.

        • willbest

Do you have a daily quota of trump hate?

          • CanadaBear

Mine’s bottomless if you need some.

        • SC Dave

          You mean *your President* Trump?

    • To be fair, the person was blatantly ignoring history and saying Hitler didn’t oppress homosexuals. In fact, Nazi Germany arrested over 50,000 of them and sent many to concentration camps.

Jeff works in theater and thus has many friends who are gay. It’s a direct affront to them, and something he feels on a personal level.

It’s like somebody telling a Jewish person that Nazis weren’t that bad to Jews. They’re just asking to get punched (not that I condone that kind of violence. I can’t figure out where to stand on the whole “punching Nazis just for being Nazis” debate that’s been raging for the past six months or so).

      • willbest

Its hard to tell people they should give up their guns, when you support violence if their beliefs don’t conform to yours.

        • Punching is not shooting.
Righteous indignation is on the books, but it’s usually best to err on the side of peace.
Then again, that’s how Hitler rose to power (appeasement). Fine line.

          • willbest

You are quibbling over degree of violence. Plus how am I to know you only want to rough me up a bit. How am I to trust that a punch is all you want. Maybe its a few kicks to the head while I am on the ground, maybe its a baseball bat.

            tangent:

Hitler came to power thanks to the utter dysfunction of the German government and the draconian conditions the allies placed on Germany after WW1. He actually used violence while claiming victim status which is pretty much how the left operates in the US through BLM and antifa. Fortunately, we have youtube so they can’t get away with it. So we know they started the crap in Chicago, Arizona, Charolettesville, Berkley, etc.

Hitler started moving through Europe thanks to appeasement though.

I caught an article the other day that pretty much asked the question why did the US even enter WW1, and what would the result have been if it hadn’t. I didn’t know this but apparently the Brits had seriously considered a Kaiser controlled Europe as something they could live with. And unlike WW2 where we were legit attacked by an ally of Hitler, we actually didn’t have a whole lot vested in the first WW1.

Certainly WW2 would have been if not canceled delayed and taken a different form.

          • willbest

Just a follow up question. How many people get to punch me? Do I get a card if I have been punched that makes me immune to future punches, or does everybody that doesn’t like me get 1 free punch?

Just trying to figure out how things are going to work if progressive win Civil War 2 (cold or hot).

          • I don’t advocate punching anyone, but if you wear a Nazi uniform and take the bus, it’s akin to that scene from Die Hard 3 when he had to walk through Harlem with an “I hate N-word” sign.

            You’re asking for it.

          • willbest

I know its sacrilege but I rank 3 over 1.

          • as do I.

Irons as a Nazi terrorist Gruber? Snakes on a mothafucking plane?

            Hard to beat.

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

I will admit that I would advocate punching will in the face at certain times. hehehe!

          • willbest

You mean like when I point out that there has been surprisingly little to say around these parts about Weinstein when I had to read daily updates about O’Reilly?

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

no I mean when you take some innocuous comment meant to be funny and blow it up into pointless political drivel.

          • CanadaBear

Harvey was a good little progressive… don’t pick on him!

          • I generally don’t being up politics around here. Weinstein is an asbolute asshole and creep and I hope he rots in jail for whatever is left of his pathetic life.

          • Joecashflow

Now I wanna see Die Hard 3. Only in Hollywierd can you make that shit up.

          • How could you NOT have watched Die Hard 3?

            Best Die Hard.

          • SC Dave

Will, if the progressives win, we will use what options we may have to flee the fascist state they will build.

          • AlbertInTucson

The French and Georges Clemenceau get the lion’s share of the credit for the draconian peace agreement.

As for appeasement, what was the other option?

The only countries prepared for war at the time were Germany and Japan.

The Brits were still reeling from WWI’s carnage.

            Neville Chamberlain knew it.

Dunkirk, followed by Singapore, Pearl Harbor and the Philippines bore it out.

Same reason Stalin signed the non-aggression pact. He was buying time.

          • I know you’re a history buff like me, Al.

Do you think the Treaty of Versaille was “draconian”?

I suppose it’s easy to say that a century later, but the Allies lost 6M, not even counting civilians and wounded.

          • willbest

Does it matter if they are the aggressor, if your objective is to ensure there aren’t any more wars like it?

The North didn’t go around exterminating all the leaders of the South. It wanted them on board in selling it to their people so there wasn’t a prolonged insurrection.

          • AlbertInTucson

In it’s own way, it continued the war on Germany.

Just minus the guns and bombs.

It also paved the way for WWII and it was something that Britain’s Lloyd George, or, especially, Woodrow Wilson were keen on.

Many still argue Wilson’s excuses for involving the USA were weak.

WWII was kind of just the 2nd half of WWI with a long half time show starring the Great Depression.

          • AlbertInTucson

Typo. LLloyd George and Wilson were NOT keen on”

          • AlbertInTucson

Of course, the brunt of the fighting was IN France.

Also the French army had a bit of a mutiny.

The story in PATHS OF GLORY, though factionalized, is based on actual events.

It’s also still one of the best anti-war films ever produced.

          • SC Dave

Well, perhaps Stalin not liquidated the Russian officer corps, they would have been ready.

The Pruss… sorry German General Staff could not have dreamed a better scenario

          • Was it “draconian”? NOBODY forced Germany to start WWI. The French and others who were at the bad end of it wouldn’t interpret is “draconian”.

WWI was more or less the last war between empires anyways. But no doubt the Germans were the aggressors.

However, the treaty of Versailles humiliated the proud Germans. Here’s a thought, Germany. If you don’t want to be humiliated STOP STARTING WARS.

The “reparations” may have been “draconian” (then again, how do you put a price on the millions of lives needlessly lost?) which in turn crippled the German economy, which the Great Depression made worse – thus leading to instability. Poverty, humiliation, the feeling of powerlessness usually leads to the rise of a tyrant (ahem).

This is what the Marshall Plan set to correct after WW2.

          • SC Dave

FFS will, the goddamn carnage had to stop somehow.

And the inbred, imbecilic aristrocratic order responsible for 800+ years of European suffering had to end.

          • willbest

800 years of suffering? Come on Dave. You think without their leaders all those people would get together and sing we are the world?

Simple fact of the matter is for 95% of the population of the planet it was a shit show for pretty much all of history up until the industrial revolution when productivity skyrocketed.

          • Cuck Cooper

Dave, I have a sure fire(get it?) way to help prevent you from any further guilt you may be experiencing. I think it will go a long way in minimizing any further pangs of guilt due to the actions of a lawless psychopath. Keep in my, you will always be 2nd guessing yourself that more could have been done on your part but never the less, I think this would go a long way in bringing you much peace and comfort to you.

Prepare and notorize a sworn affidavit relinquishing your right to own and bear arms, thus freeing yourself from any further pangs of guilt. Buy a front page column in your local paper displaying a signed copy of your full affidavit including your telephone number and address. Then run it for a full week and hire an independent 3rd party to search your personal property to insure no hypocracy exists as an overt sign of transparency on your part.

            Did I miss anything Will?

          • Irish Sweetness

Hitler had no problem with Britain. The idea he wanted world domination is a false one. Britain and France declared war on Germany, not the other way around. And had he listened to his Generals on the Battle of Britain …. he wins the war before America get a sniff of it.

          • You dont think Hitler would’ve come after Britain and the US after the rest of Europe, Africa, middle east and Russia?

            Plz

        • SC Dave

          Fuck yes. This.

        • I’m all for respectful political disagreement. That’s entirely different than Nazi though.

And as for gun control specifically, I think the ban all guns people are just as dumb as the zero regulations at all folks. Has to be somewhere reasonable in the middle that we can settle into.

          • willbest

Why is it different for nazis if they aren’t throwing the first punch? Black Powers and La Raza end game is literally the same thing. You are differentiating not on the basis of evil, but on likelihood of evil occurring in the medium time scale

Timu calling the plays on D Monday…

    • SC Dave

      Holy. Shit.

    • Bradford is lethal within 5-10 yds.

I foresee a shitton of crossing routes.

We’re gonna be missing Freeman in this game big time.

Gotta get Jackson to lay some wood!

And he’s hitting like 72% completion, which is nuts.

          • AlbertInTucson

And Sheldon Diggs has looked good all season to date.

        • AlbertInTucson

What I was hearing on Sirius/NFL, sounds like he’s good to good.

    • Bears without their top 3 ILB for this one.

No way to prepare for that realistically with salary cap constraints. At least Timu has been with team for a few years now. I’m less concerned about him calling plays than I am that he’s not athletic enough to keep up in space.

      • willbest

Well then you need to find yourself whatever koolaid Irish drinks and down a glass.

        • SC Dave

          Or three

      • Timu is not athletic enough to play in space. That’s why he keeps getting demoted when better options are available.

Who’s the other ILB – Anderson? Jones?

Somebody else needs to cover and allow Timu to doe what he does best.

        Play downhill.

BUZZR is showing a 1973 MATCH GAME with Bert Convy on the guest panel and Brett Somers in the #1 position on the bottom row. Never recall her anywhere but top row, middle, where this episode has Jayne P. Morgan. Charles Nelson Reilly, Richard Dawson and Betty White fill out the celeb panel.

Besides game show hosting, what else do Bert Convy and Chuck Woolery have in common?

    • AlbertInTucson

Boy, do I hate the auto spell feature on this site.

    • AlbertInTucson

They both performed on screen with the lovely, Cheryl Ladd.

Good evening fellas! I’m currently at a bar with this GORGEOUS thick redbone. Nights goin good so far I’m pretty sure I’m gettin sum tonight but the bar we’re at is a place my wife’s friends frequent quite often! The bouncer here is a guy I used to be cool with in high school but he ain’t gettin is free drinks tho man!

    • CanadaBear

Hope you’re OK with splitting half your stuff because it looks like you’re heading that way! Be good, if not, be careful!

      • Cuck Cooper

You know you’re in the wrong place if you suddenly find yourself wanting to cheat on your wife and expecting free drinks while broadcasting your intentions for all eternity. Sounds like a recipe for a raging case of crabs at a minimum. Smh.

        • CanadaBear

Picking up women in bars where your wife’s friends hang out is probably not the most foolproof cheating plan. Different strokes. That’s one thing about being an old fart at some point you realize you have no idea what other people’s home life is all about.

        • Malice Halice

Naw man, all my chicks r clean wit class, I think.

        • SC Dave

Naw, it sounds like outright lies.

      • EnderWiggin

I’d guess, but there has been a ton of racist talk around here lately.

Wow, that is not I was thinking ….

    • Malice Halice

Aight so the night went great! I come to find out the on fridays n Sat it’s basically ghetto night ( my girl don’t like ghetto spots) so none of my girl’s closest friends wouldn’t hang with that type of crowd. Anywho, still didn’t get free drinks. But I saw a few hot chicks from my Facebook n saw em in person for the 1st time n they looked no where near as good as online! I kinda pissed my date off cuz I kept talkin shit bout ugly n poorly dressed ppl in the bar. Some dude literally bought my shoes (Jordan’s) off my feet for 140 bucks! I only paid 70 for em at the time! So at that point me n da chick left cuz I was no longer wearing shoes n she drove me to her crib n yea, good times!

      • Malice Halice

Oh I didn’t mention that me n da girl was on a date, n we was driving my car.

I’m hoping Trutitty utilizes Miller Monday. He has the best hands on our team, and has a knack for the ‘breakdown scramble’.
Shit, I have a ton of hopes for Monday – my biggest: No injuries!

  • Irish Sweetness

“The temperature on Brian Hoyer’s seat is rising as his inefficient play continues. The 49ers quarterback earned a 49 percent completion percentage last week, and many of those misses didn’t give receivers a chance. Hoyer needs to take advantage of a Colts defense that continually gives up big plays, allowing 283.5 passing yards per game (3rd-most in the NFL). Hoyer’s receiving corps is a mishmash of mostly third-fiddles behind Pierre Garcon, but the real struggles start with the quarterback off-target tosses to open wideouts. That needs to change Sunday or the calls for rookie C.J. Beathard to get a shot might reach loud enough levels Kyle Shanahan can’t ignore.”

“Carson Palmer has been battered this season, under pressure on an NFL-high 36.5 percent of pass plays. The QB has been sacked 17 times more and hit 43 times more than any other passer. With Bruce Arians’ philosophical repudiation of adding additional blockers to the scheme, Palmer is likely to get pulverized again this week by the Eagles penetrating defensive front (Fletcher Cox missing another week does give the QB some reprieve).”

  • SC Dave

Two and a half days left, JW. Getting closer…

  • Sahr Gborie

Willie Young will miss the rest of the season with tricep injury. Things just keep going from bad to worse. Guess we can expect Fangio to drop Floyd into coverage all night long on Monday

    • It’s all part of the plan

      Re-sign Houston

      • N’Acho Libre returns

        • Irish Sweetness

          El Nacho.

      • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

Pace already gave him a call. He got excited and started celebrating… well we all know what happened next.

        • One of the few times a person can literally say, “Houston, we got a problem…”

          • Sahr Gborie

The hits just keep on coming

          • Irish Sweetness

Or what was actually said, fact fans, “Ok, Houston, we’ve had a problem here”
            (Jack Swigert)

          ROTFL

      • ButtonShoes

Age? Also our strength and conditioning people are hot garbage.

    • Irish Sweetness

Need Nanny and Floyd to stay healthy now, and hope El Nacho steps up. Use Christian Jones as a straight pass-rusher.

  • EnderWiggin

Best sack dance ever, (probably get you 15 yards the wrong way in the pros though) https://sports.yahoo.com/miamis-kendrick-norton-pretends-play-guitar-fsu-qbs-leg-sack-200301209.html

  • RenoBear

Good lord TBS cameraman… stop lusting after Bryce Harper. The guy is such a pompous ass

    • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

Did that ball come down yet?

    • willbest

I suppose the nice thing about losing that way is Edwards can keep Montgomery company on the bus ride home.

      • AlbertInTucson

You hang it, they bang it.

  • Joecashflow

This is not just the start of another Bears QB. We’ve had that 4 times in last year, maybe 5 times in last 2 years. This is not just the start of a rookie QB. It’s the start of the Bears rookie QB. I’ve been waiting, well, a generation for this. I try not to set expectations high. In fact, as a life long Bears fan, I try not to set expectations too low. We all know all to well what happens when big games come. NFL championship 2010, almost any Packer game to name a few, or lately just trying to win more than one in a row. Those memories just under the surface of turnovers…the worst kind, like 3rd and 30 and we pull a Conte to lose the game. And it doesn’t have to even be Conte anymore. We almost expect it. So I believe this simply will not continue. I want to believe the football God’s have laughed at us long enough. They are moving on. This time, when the QB changes, Conte is gone forever. We won’t even throw him another pick 6. We won’t give up the long 3rd downs. We won’t puke in the red zone. We wont be the team that sets records for the opposition. This stops now, with the changing of the guard. A generational change. The rookie can last 20 years and so can the new Bears. Long live Trubisky and long live the NEW Bears at the top of the NFC. How many fingers on a hand? How many superbowl wins ! Nope, not just another QB change for the Bears.

    • Irish Sweetness

Neckbeard was the last rookie QB to start for us.

      • Joecashflow

Forgot about him ! Bad trade it turned out. Could have used a few of those draft picks for Jerry.

        • Irish Sweetness

I have no doubt Mitch can win us a SB. Whether or not we can give him the roster to do so remains to be seen though.

Look at Willie, now. The Super Bowl team is the healthiest team.

          • Joecashflow

It’s always our defense that’s injured. Maybe because they are on the field all day ? That’s not bad luck. It’s called not converting 3rd downs, and all you are is 5.5 YPC. Let’s hope the Biscuit can change that.

  • Malice Halice

Bladerunner was HORRIBLE. I do not recommend that movie.

    • AlbertInTucson

Personally, I never saw the “greatness” of the original.

      • Scharfinator

Not amazing storyline, the setting was pretty awesome though. It’s still “visionary” sci fi today.

        • AlbertInTucson

The Ridley Scott film I REALLY enjoy is THE DUELISTS.

        • Malice Halice

Yep that was about it. The visuals.

      • Malice Halice

Me n girl finna find the original n watch it cuz this new version was almost disrespectful

        • Irish Sweetness

The original? The voice-over job where he’s not a replicant? Nah. The Director’s Cut is the only version to watch if you’re watching the second one.

Can’t wait to see it. He wanted Bowie in Leto’s part, which would have been cool.

    • Phillip MyCrevice

No it wasn’t. It was good.

It was very respectful to the themes of the original. Jared Leto was the weak link but the rest was good.

      • Malice Halice

Mane, u trippin. Maybe my problem was that I was expecting a good movie.

        • Irish Sweetness

Judging by the comments under Kermode’s review, the fans are happy.

What did you think of ‘Arrival’?

        • Phillip MyCrevice

Perhaps the new Call of Duty movie will be more to your liking.

  • CanadaBear

Good news, Hicks is off the injury report.

Final Bears injury report for Monday night — Linebackers Nick Kwiatkoski and Willie Young DOUBTFUL. Cornerback Marcus Cooper and center Hroniss Grasu QUESTIONABLE.

    • SC Dave

Looks like a few days off helping.

    • AlbertInTucson

Cooper’s play has been pretty questionable so far this season.

  • Johnnywad

Jim Harbaugh vigorously trying to polish turds into quarterbacks….

    • AlbertInTucson

      Help Wanted: Quarterback.
Send Tape to Ann Arbor, Michigan.

      • Johnnywad

Harbaugh’s soft underbelly is showing. And the myth of him “developing” a QB takes another ding.

He’s a really good coach, and that defense is excellent. But one does not simply master “developing” a QB.

After all, he’s the guy that benched Alex Smith for Kap.

  • CanadaBear
    • Johnnywad

Why can’t we have nice things?

      • Malice Halice

        For crying out loud!

      • CanadaBear

It’s crazy how bad it’s been under Fox. If it was just the older guys you could understand but it’s all across the spectrum.

    • willbest

Should we start an IR pool?

      • Irish Sweetness

        I’ll buy 17 for a dollar.

I’ll have to owe you the dollar.

  • AlbertInTucson

Bradford is still listed as “Questionable” for Monday.

  • AlbertInTucson

So, the Trevathan hit was soooo awful but, Devante Adams was cleared to play this week…?

    • EnderWiggin

If Adams plays this week, so should Danny. That’d be an interesting rule.

    • Irish Sweetness

That means he wasn’t even concussed, which means he was just tackled, and we had butt-hurt fudge-packers stinking up the joint here. Jebus.

  • Irish Sweetness

Word to the wise Mr. Pace. That running game keeping the spark alive is one injury to a left tackle away from disappearing completely. Fail to prepare, prepare to fail.

    • Which all-pro LT would you have signed or drafted this off-season?

      • Irish Sweetness

Thinking more the RT we seem to keep around when he should be on a bench.

Did we need another TE more than we need a decent right tackle?

        • Johnnywad

          Yes
