Championship Sunday Preview & Picks

Administrative Note: The Weekend Show will return Super Bowl week and continue to run throughout the off-season. Our guests will not only be Bears-related but also branch out to other Chicago institutuions – bars, restaurants, culture, politics…etc. And we’ll do A LOT on the quarterbacks available in this draft.

Went 3-1 against the spread last week but only 2-2 picking winners. So I’m an alarmingly mediocre 4-4 ATS and 5-3 picking winners this postseason. Not good.

Packers +5 over FALCONS

Atlanta had the most impressive win of the division round. Took some body blows early from a proven contender and then did what this franchise has failed to do for what feels like a decade: knocked out an opponent. This is unquestionably the most exciting and dynamic offense left in the playoffs. But what I love about the construction of this roster is they are now equipped to hold a lead because of a young, exciting pass rush.

Will that matter against Aaron Rodgers? Nobody knows. Rodgers is now playing the quarterback position better than anyone in the history of the league. His receiving corps stinks. His running back is a slot receiver. He has a brilliant pass blocking offensive line but the rest of Ted Thompson’s team is the definition of mediocrity. Can Rodgers win this game? Of course he can. But I’m saying the magic runs out. Barely.

Falcons 41, Packers 38

Steelers +6 over PATRIOTS

I have no idea what to make of this game.

Houston’s defense was brilliant a week ago but were beaten by two things: (1) Weirdo Tom Brady moon balls his receivers managed to haul in and (2) their own quarterback throwing the ball to the other team. If the Patriots had either the Chiefs or Steelers on the other side of the field Saturday night, I don’t think they’re playing this week.

Kansas City should have beaten Pittsburgh but Andy Reid and Alex Smith executed an offensive game plan the league hasn’t seen since the invention of the forward pass. (Reid is quickly venturing into Schottenheimer territory.)

Here’s what I know. Le’Veon Bell is amazing, Bill Belichick knows that and agenda item number one for the Patriots will be stopping him. If they do, they win. If they don’t…?

Patriots 24, Steelers 21

  • Captain Obvious

I’ve been wrong too much already because I was picking with my heart and not with my head.

New England to win (SU) but not cover (ATS)
Atlanta to win (SU) but not cover (ATS)

But I still hope Brady gets wrecked in the 1st quarter and the Patriots lose.

    • Captain Obvious

Shit, I wanted to be the first so I didn’t even read the post. Guess I’m picking the exact same thing as Blogfather. I’m fucking doomed.

    • MB30SD

You’d rather Brady gets ruined than rodgers…. You’re going to hell.

At least Brady is a 50 yr old warrior with kids and uggs and shit. People may hate his team, but he’s legend

      • Rack ’em (GP)

Not to mention that means Rapey Ben would win

      • BerwynBomber

Fuck Brady. He’s a liar and cheat and he has enough rings for four QBs.

        • MB30SD

          interesting perspective

  • MB30SD

    Honestly…. Doooonnnnt caaaaaaaare

  • willbest

Falcons to straight murder the Packers. Steelers to cover, but not win.

  • CanadaBear

Hopefully the dirty birds demolish Erin and Matthews. Not that I love Big Ben but I like the Steelers more than the Pats so I hope they destroy Tommy Boy.

    • Johnnywad

From your mouth to Gods ear.

  • AlbertInTucson

    “His receiving corps stinks.”

    Really?

    Jared Cook stinks?

As good a throw as that was set up the winner last week, it took a great catch to complete the play.

    A. Rodgers has thrown TD passes to 6 other receivers not named Nelson or Adams.

And none of them resembles the inconsistent, Josh Bellamy.

His receivers are not his problem.

On the other hand, his bottom-feeder pass defense is the kind Ryan has feasted on all season.

    • willbest

Jared Cook has been inconsistent. And Bellamy has some great catches on his resume, in fact it’s the easy ones he has trouble with

      • AlbertInTucson

        Cook does not “Stink”.

    • BerwynBomber

Think the point is that both Nelson and Adams could be out, which would basically leave Rodgers with one starter (Cobb) who is a slot guy, one UDFA in Allison and basically the Cheese’s equivalent of Bellamy in Janis. GB could very well look like they did last year when they went out to ARI. Rodgers throwing to a bunch of PS-level guys.

But yes Cook is good receiving TE and Montgomery can obviously be a good pass-catching RB.

    • Rack ’em (GP)

      lol

  • 3-1 straight up last weekend (whiffed on Chiefs/Steelers). 6-2 so far.

I’ve got NE and GB this weekend.

    You?

    • MB30SD

fuck green bay data… fuck them in their face.

      • Rack ’em (GP)

        jes

      • Johnnywad

Sadly, I can only give you the one upvote

      • SC Dave

Green Bay was a lock to beat Dallas. Just like Atlanta is a lock this weekend.

      • DaCoaches Mustache

        I support this message.

    • BerwynBomber

I think GB could get smoked. Rodgers is unreal but DAL was starting to roll over that D by game’s end. ATL very well might continue that trend.

      • AlbertInTucson

And GB’s defensive backfield certainly didn’t come out of that game HEALTHIER.

Still, you ARE getting Rodgers plus, what? 4.5?

Houston may have exposed a nerve last week lining up their quick rushers over New England’s center.

      • CanadaBear

The Fudge are gonna have their hands full with that offense. Hope the Dirty Birds roll up a huge score on ’em (in a win).

      • yeah, I think that’s gonna be an absolute shootout. If the noise in the dome can do enough to GB’s OL that they start to leak a bit more than usual, I could easily see GB losing.

I just don’t think ATL has the front to really bother Rodgers enough, and in that case I’m not betting against him.

I hope like hell I’m wrong.

        • ATL has a REAL homefield advantage. All those hard counts and audibles Vadgers loves will be moot. His Oline will undoubtedly go offisdes at least 2 times cuz of it, making drives harder to sustain.

The Falcon’s pass rushers are better than the Cowboys, ESP if their O goes up two scores.

The only way I see the Falcon’s losing is if Matty Ice, Julio choke and/or those RBs get curbed.

Falcon’s RBs are perhaps the most underrated part of that team, but they create real mismatches and are very explosive.

My uncle, (who’s whacked in the head but has money) starting buying gold objects after the last crash. Took his money out of the market to do so. Byes gold stuff so the government can’t track it and locks it up.

I just sat all chilly like and told him he’s nuts. He wouldn’t listen. Guess who’s laughing now? But he does have some killer gold watches from the ’70s only true pimp could pull off.

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

Why do you think he’s whacked in the head?

          • You laugh now, but just wait till Mad Max becomes a reality, then HE will be laughing!

Of course, if word got out about his gold, the roaming gangs would just raid him

“Thanks for saving gold for us!”

          • Johnnywad

Not to worry. I plan to get there first. He doesn’t even realize he’s my safety net.

          • Rack ’em (GP)

I figure the CIA will cut the time short if they must, like they did when Kennedy stopped taking orders.

          • then wouldn’t he say something like 1, 2, or 3?

4 seems to speak to an election.

Jon Stewart / Emma Stone 2020!

          • willbest

That was my point, because the current progressive fever dream is impeachment for violating some statute or another. GP is demonstrating a bit more levelheadedness.

          • gotcha. i misread. mea culpa.

          • Cormonster

Trump was just being financially prudent.

      • Obama – if you’re a black man with an ivy league education, you can make it!

Gotta admit, Trump’s does allure …

His receiving corps, albeit dicey, is improved from last year. Allison looks like he could develop into a #3 guy. Cobb is healthy (even though Nelson and Adams are not). And Cook is a solid receiving TE who can stretch the seam.

But yeah, GB still feels too much like a one-man band. Can’t see them getting past another superior team on the road. Especially given the state of their DBs and WRs.

I’m predicting two stinkers: NE and ATL both by double digits.

Saw where the Bears LB coach, Clint Hurtt, fulfilled his contract and wouldn’t re-sign with the Beloved. That’s what happens when they don’t let coaches interview (they turned down Gase’s request last year).

    • willbest

I think its poor form to deny an interview for a promotion. But for lateral moves. Fuck them, fulfill your contract.

      • But a lot of the “promotions” are pretty much just in title.

Like “Linebackers and co sp teams coach” or something.

Don’t matter. They all will likely be gone this year anyways.

        • willbest

I know they like to muddy the water sometimes but its basically 4 tiers

          HC
          Coordinators
          Position coaches
          Assistant position coaches/misc. staff

    • Sauron’s right eyeball

He could have asked for that in your contract. You do what you can to hold onto coaches you like. DC in SF would have been a lateral move, not a step up. I’m glad the Bears didn’t allow that interview.

      • Irish Sweetness

wow! flipped on Fox News…. and they were debating which parts of Trumps speech were Hitlerian, as in like Hitler.

    • Sauron’s right eyeball

It was an honest but unbelievable speech because I don’t believe this country wants to give up it’s self hatred just yet. When Hitler came to power, Germany was reeling from cultural decay and debauchery so yes, there are similarities.

      • willbest

Obama promised to lower the sea levels. I think he set himself a less ambitious task.

      • Germany was still reeling from the great depression which hit them even harder since they were still making war reparations from WW1.

Trump inherits a HEALTHY economy (unlike Obama who had to fight back the economic downfall of western civilization).

        • willbest

Healthy if you only look at the top quint.

        • AlbertInTucson

          Healthy economy?

Everyone is born with a legal classification. When people allow governments to con them into changing their status from a man or women into one that in the eyes of maritime law diminishes a person’s legal office to that of a beast of the field, they can legally do whatever the hell they please to you. Highset office is man or woman. If you have a ssn, you are classified as a bond servant in international law. Check it out, you have no idea the level of deception of the average person because international law/maritime law trumps common law when a person unknowingly gives up their high office of man or women without realizing it.

Or Sargent Hulka’s gonna take his big toe and….

          • 2M more Americans voted for the reviled Hillary.
            America did indeed speak.

          • willbest

Bill Clinton had 14 million more people vote against him than for him. He was still President. Whats your point?

          • And America spoke then too.

          • willbest

And accepted that 6 in 10 people voted against as President because he won the contests he was supposed to win. Just like Trump.

Also there was a weird quirk in CA that added greatly to Clinton’s lead there. Quite frankly, I never thought the EC was a good idea until this election demonstrated that if CA, NY, and NJ ran top 2 generals during a popular vote election, the country would fall into USSR style oligarchy inside two decades.

          • And ur the guy who wanted more taxes mor votes, right?

          • willbest

I like such a system where the Constitution has been reduced to nothing more than the Bill of Rights thanks to things like Incorporation, the Dormant Commerce Clause, and an exceptionally generous reading of the Necessary and Proper Clause.

It is not, by a long shot, my preferred form of governance.

          • Governerd

That’s not an apples to apples comparison, if you count in other candidate votes than over 10 million voted against Trump. The point was straight-up Hillary had more votes than Trump, no single candidate had more votes than Bill.

          • willbest

And Hillary lost by 5 million. Plus she didn’t win the states. So where is her legitimacy? Bill got the plurality and won the states. Lincoln only garnered a 38% plurality and won the states (a little too low for the times it turns out). Plus Clinton campaigned to win the popular vote because even as late as October her fear was winning the EC and losing the pop vote. Of course the result was the opposite, and it cost her twice as much money to do it.

Its nonsensical to complain about who won a game where the rules were known to all beforehand. Now of course you are free to change the rules going forward, assuming we can agree to the new rules, but complaining about Trump not getting the plurality Hillary did, is like complaining the Steelers win is illegitimate because they didn’t get the most touchdowns.

          • It’s not about complaining who ‘won’ the election.

It’s this non-sense that “America has spoken. It wanted Trump”

Nonsense. 2M more Americans voted for Hillary (many holding their nose).

Trump only won cuz his votes fell inside certain lines, nothing more.

And Trump is perhaps the most divisive president coming into office since Lincoln, who you know, states seceded from once he won.

Not exactly a sparkling Trump endorsement.

The Republicans will never get rid of the EC (and aren’t they supposed to be non-elitist?) because the last two times it favored them with Gore and now Trump.

They know they’ll never win over Cali from just a purely general pop vote.

It’s unjust. Wyoming votes count 3 times more than Cali voters. How is that fair?

Personally, I have always felt we should get rid of the electoral college. It was there to check “mobocracy” in an age when the avg citizen couldn’t read, but now literacy and information is a given for a voter, so it’s an antiquated (and undemocratic) check.

Then again, I think California should secede, and many in this state feel the same.

          • willbest

The people you are with are out there hurting people and destroying property. You support them and they you. You don’t get to call Trump divisive, when he hasn’t done anything yet and they are hurting people. He is pro-gay marriage (First president elected), for universal healthcare, against war, and pro-working class Americans (a position abandoned by the Dems around Gore). He spent 2 minutes out of 20 talking about inner city crime problems. If you don’t want to give him even 6 months, that shit is on you. Not him.

          • I didn’t know I was hurting people and destroying property. Don’t they teach you guys in law school not to make assumptions?

That’s like me assuming if you’re pro-life that you’re going around bombing abortion clinics.

I don’t get to call Trump divisive and in the same breath you’re citing millions of protestors across the country fucking shit up? Uhm, that’s called REALITY. REALITY calls Trump divisive.

His stands and campaign promises mean little. Both Dems and Rep make all kinds of promises they never intend to keep.

We’ll see how it goes, but remember, Trump was supposed to help out the common po white man from the greedy wall street globalization cabal.

            We’ll see how that goes.

The wall? We’ll see how that goes

The middle east, China, Russia (shudders) we’ll see how that goes.

          • willbest

No the REALITY is that a couple million people are throwing a temper-tantrum worthy of a two year old because apparently nobody has ever told them they don’t always get their way. They are illegitimate emotions. And you, by validating these emotions, are providing them moral cover to behave that way.

You aren’t legal responsible, obviously, unless you are harboring them, but you are creating an environment in which they are nurtured. You are creating the divisiveness.

Just because the “don’t tax me” wing of the GOP didn’t engage in violence doesn’t mean that Obama was any less divisive. It does mean that they were far more civilized about it. Which is impressive considering that the Tea Party has proven in a court of law that Obama’s IRS persecuted several of its organizations. Trump hasn’t done anything yet, and people are acting like criminals and then hiding behind “speech”.

Lincoln wasn’t even on the ballot in the Slave States.

          • Governerd

I’m not disputing that Trump won the EC and that’s what it takes to win the office. Thems the rules. But I think we can understand why people are upset when most people didn’t vote for him and that an archaic system is perhaps not functioning as it should. While I don’t question the votes Trump received, I believe it is questionable on how he got the people to vote for him and that there was interference from a foreign nation in the process to his benefit, so his legitimacy is in question and always will be for a majority of the nation. Will it change a damn thing? No. But it will haunt his presidency and may wind up to be his undoing when his own party gets tired of his antics, which might be sooner than I had originally thought.

          • Governerd

I’m not disputing Trump won the EC and thus the office, thems the rules, but I can see why the majority are frustrated with an archaic system that is perhaps not working as it should. And while I don’t doubt that he received the right votes in the right precincts to win the EC, it does appear as if his methods on getting those votes may have been influenced by a foreign power, and so for a majority, Trump’s legitimacy will never be accepted. Will it make a difference? No. But it will haunt his presidency and may perhaps be the fuel that burns him down when his own party tires of his antics and gets rid of him (which may happen sooner than I had originally thought and does not please me in the least).

          • willbest

Is it then fair to say that every election throughout the globe that the US monkies around in lack legitimacy. After all, Obama has expressed his strong displeasure to the goings on of the Israeli government, and for sure the CIA had its hand in the Urkanian coup.

And lets not forget to the extent that the Russians were affecting the election, they didn’t make anything up about Hillary or Democrats. Merely exposed their own hypocrisies. Nobody denies the e-mails are authentic. And even Obama said the Russians didn’t do anything to the actual vote totals.

Wow you saw a lot of movies this year. Disagree on suicide squad. It was neither horrible or great. Civil War was pretty sub par by Marvel standards. Loved Deadpool.

It also starred the first killer shark that had a graduate degree. You haven’t seen a shark scheme until you’ve seen this film. My son joked that the shark was going to learn to build weapons and fight back that way.

CGI or live action? Could we get real GS execs to be devoured on live TV?

I’d buy a TV for that.

“Trump is a grown man, and secondly he’s someone who has been involved with beauty contests for many years and has met the most beautiful women in the world,” Putin said. “I find it hard to believe that he rushed to some hotel to meet girls of loose morals, although ours are undoubtedly the best in the world.”

The key to the Falcons game is the Adams injury. If he can’t go hard, Vadgers is down more weapons than he can deal with. Falcons will score and score again against the Pack D. I am so sick of hearing about old man Julius still bringing it. Fuck old man Julius. He shows up for 5-6 plays a game. I don’t think they can bug Ryan enough to stop that passing attack, so they need to hang with them on O – and can’t do that w/o Adams.

    • BerwynBomber

Semi-agreed. Then again, Rodgers damn near beat ARI in the divisional round last year with only Janis and Abberdaris (think white Bellamy and white Thompson). Plus, the Cheese might also be without Allison (beyond Jordy and Adams).

But this could simply come down to the fact that the Cheese’s CBs are arguably as bad as our and arguably maybe even worse.

ATL just lit up SEA. They should completely scorch that Cheese D, which oh btw, often doesn’t generate much of a pass rush either.

      • SC Dave

That has been my point. Ryan and company made Seattle’s secondary look bad.

It should be no contest v the fudge.

        • BerwynBomber

Agreed. SEA was missing Thomas, which was huge loss, but they are still MUCH better than GB both in the secondary and in terms of overall D.

If he’s there and we don’t take him… And we take some Fucking no name, I will be done.

Hooker is a tall, rangy safety prospect with incredible instincts. He usually lines up as the high safety and he has an uncanny ability to anticipate throws, drive on the ball, and finish. He is ultra-fluid in his change of direction and has the ability to match up with tight ends in man coverage. He has the best ball skills of any safety I’ve ever evaluated in college. He is also a threat to score every time he touches the ball. Against the run, he is quick to key, read and fill the alley. He does have some fly-by missed tackles, but overall he’s reliable in this area. Hooker has the potential to be one of the league’s best safeties very early in his NFL career.

So, I wasn’t at all impressed with Allen’s Nat chap performance, but it’s one game and his numbers look solid.

So here are the guys (right now) that I will be excited about if we pick them:

Hooker (footballgasm and obviously my #1 pick)
    Allen
Thomas (I might even want him over Allen to be honest. His tape is simply ridiculous)
    Adams
Foster (his natural champ game was just absurd… Could be our new 10 year imlb)

That’s it. Pace, that’s 5 kids to pick from, don’t get cute, don’t fuck this up!!

    • Johnnywad

I trust Pace. Last year’s draft buys him a lot of cred. That said, to me, his first round picks for a while need to be committed to disrupting Aaron Rodgers. That fucker has plenty of years left. And we aren’t beating them consistently until we start breaking his face mask twice a season.

      • BerwynBomber

I wonder about Rodgers longevity. Unlike Brady (or Peyton), a good chunk of his game relies on sheer athleticism. Hence, that is something he should be unable to maintain till 40. The smarts, yes, The arm, to an extent. But gotta believe he becomes more and more a pocket passer.

        • Waffle

I could see him changing his game or even changing teams in a few years. Rodgers could step in to the Pats system and play 10 more years. If I can think of that next step you know his agent already has.

        • Johnnywad

He’s got the brains and the tools to morph into an older, less mobile, yet successful version of himself as you say. I have no doubt that guy is going to torture us for another 5-6 years. Unless of course he jumps ship as Waffle says. I gotta believe the Packers are gonna just keep writing him checks until he’s decided he’s had enough though.

          • Waffle

i could see that too. That fucking guy is amazing. An amazing creep. There have been small insights into his psyche that show him to be a fucking psychopath, Everyone that is the best ever at something has a certain level of fucking crazy.

He’s got it. Brady’s got it. Nobel scientists gotz it. Nigerian warlord with mirrored aviators definitely gots itz.

        • MB30SD

          Man, fuck that guy

    • Waffle

I’d be happy with any of those guys. Honestly, i’d go top Safety this year, sign a quality vet FA safety then draft a 2nd round safety in 2018. No one talks about it but during the Packers consistency of winning they had Nick Collins, Woodson, Tramon Williams and a host of quality DB’s.
Collins was on pace to be a fucking hall of famer perennial all pro and Woodson is HOF.

If we go DE in the first, I can’t abide by a tweener that’s 6’3. So let’s go Safety or trade down and go safety and DE …

      Ryan Pace: Okay, Irish!

Just for fun. I can’t stop laughing at this pic.

Have a feeling that Falcons roll over the Pack as the game goes on. Bets are in, Falcons/Pats parlay to more than double my money.
Money will then be reinvested in Patriots superbowl victory. Proceeds then reinvested into Slovakian Table Tennis triple parlay.

      • Waffle

        Hall of Fame meme.

    • BerwynBomber

Sounds right to me. The Cheese are starting to resemble us — take Rodgers off their team and I don’t know if (current injuries included) they look tremendously more talented than the 2016 Bears. Rodgers could make it interesting for a half but ATL should otherwise roll.

I don’t trust PIT much as I want them to win. The Antoino Brown thing is a harmless transgression and I can’t imagine NE, of all teams, needing any bulletin board material. But it does make me wonder where PIT’s head is at, and fuck, it is Belichick and Brady in the post-season. Basically, unless you are Coughlin and Eli you have little chance.

      • Waffle

Edelman is poised for a huge day against that young secondary. So much so that he’ll become even more legendary and will get hooked on Oxy and Titos like Welker. You know you’ve made it when you’re wearing a Fedora at the derby high on pills, booze and hookers losing thousands and not giving a fucking fuck.

    • Sauron’s right eyeball

We need the MB kiss of death endorsement to make it official yonny.

      • MB30SD

        nope

    • SC Dave

      Atlanta for the ring.

      • Waffle

If I had to put my money on pats/falcons you have to go with Brady. He will go down as one of the greatest qbs ever to play the game.

        • BerwynBomber

Agreed BUT it is still more about Belichick than Brady.

Plus, NE definitely has the best D of any of the four teams left. By a large margin, which is no small thing.

    • AlbertInTucson

I realize that Big Ben has been “Meh” away from home this season and that Tomlin has a bad history vs. the Pats but, the lineup of QBs NE faced all year was less than impressive.

  • Rack ’em (GP)

    D. Adams going through walk through at Pack camp in his boot this morning (watching NFL Network). Expected to play. How effectively is a mystery.

    • BerwynBomber

At this point Cheese might be more concerned if Allison can go. He’s no Adams. But he came on the second half of their season and might develop one day into a #3. (I can’t imagine Adams being that effective even if he plays.)

Otherwise, it will be Cobb and a few ST- and PS-level guys. (And Allison came off their PS mid-season.)

Btw, I also think ATL’s two-headed RB crew could totally gash that Cheese D. As someone pointed out on the radio yesterday, if you add up Coleman’s and Freeman’s stats per game they basically equal L’Veon Bell. They’re a nightmare even beyond Ice and Julio.

      • AlbertInTucson

The Packer LBs on Freeman & Coleman looks like mismatch.

        • AlbertInTucson

And I don’ mean for the Packers.

I like the sponsored ads this morning. 2 of the 6 are the hottie from Under Siege. Same photo just reversed.

I saw Ryan beat ND on a Hail Mary so many years ago and would love to see him get his ring. The Pack is running thin on duck tape and bubble gum so I can see them going down, despite what Rogers has been pulling out of his backside. Atlanta should be able to put up bigger numbers than Dallas so we shall see what we shall see.

    • Rack ’em (GP)

Colts fired GM Grigson. Odd timing. But hey, it’s Irsay and the Colts.

    • willbest

Must just sobered up from his post season bender.

    • AlbertInTucson

Grigson’s track record makes Emery & Angelo look like geniuses.

Grigson, aside from throwing Andrew Luck to the wolves in terms of protection, is also the man who thought giving a #1 to Cleveland for the already-a-proven-bust, Trent Richardson.

  • MB30SD

    This thing on?

Jess. Evra one put on their pink hankies and went to a rally to make themselves feel better. It’s turrible.

What am I on record with. Atlanta beats the spread and Steelers cover in a loss? I still like those.

On Peanut’s letter to his younger self …. aren’t those the things for guys on death row? Anyone who’s fucked up royally?

Peanut’s letter to his younger self should read .. .”Just keep doing what you’re doing, kid, and you’ll be a millionaire.”
