Betting Super Bowl Sunday: Five Surefire Ways to Lose Money

| February 1st, 2017

Here are five bets for this weekend. Bet everything you have. Unless you have a problem. Then don’t bet anything. All odds from Paddy Power.

WASTE MANAGEMENT PHOENIX OPEN: STEVE STRICKER FINISH INSIDE TOP TEN – 12:1

Several years ago I became the first person in Queens history to lose $1,000 on Super Bowl Sunday before the Super Bowl came on TV thanks to the fine efforts of Bubba Watson at the Waste Management Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale. (A golf course I have played and loved.) It’s now become tradition for me to wager too much on this tournament, which often leaks through the opening kickoff and annoys many in the bar In which I’m watching.

Stricker is a very strange player. At his age and with his lack of consistent competition, he has two possible finishes. He’s either missing the cut by three shots or finishing something like T-4. I think he shows up this week and makes you a fortune.

COIN TOSS: TAILS

This is not a heads kind of game. Heads would be Steelers-Giants or Patriots-Cowboys. The Falcon presence on Super Bowl Sunday means tails will not fail.

FIRST TOUCHDOWN SCORER: TOM BRADY – 50:1

I had to double check these odds twice. Fifty to one?!? Listen, we know Brady isn’t exactly Colin Kaepernick but there are so many scenarios where I can envision Brady taking the ball into the end zone for the first score. And at this number, a $10 flier is winning you $500. So you root for a pass interference in the end zone on the Pats opening drive and you’ll probably get four tries to make magic happen.

TOTAL ATTEMPTED FIELD GOALS: OVER 4.5 – EVEN MONEY

The Patriots epitomize the bend-don’t-break philosophy so expect the Falcons to have several lengthy, “almost” drives that end in field goal attempts. And with two strong-legged, reliable kickers and an indoor game, neither team will be reluctant to kick from distance.

UNDER 58

The whole world thinks this game is going over and god knows I hope it does. But when everybody thinks one thing, I go in the other direction.

I would bet CD gets a strip sack recovery for TD and a Pick 6. This leads him to being voted MVP

    • Bender McLugh

      hahaah awesome

      • MB30SD

        I hate you right now

    • Scharfinator

Goodness that would be so tragically, hilariously, apt for the Bears

      • SC Dave

I would smirk at MB, that’s for sure.

  • One Dump from Retirement (GP)

50:1 on Brady scoring (via his arm) the first points of the game?

    Man, that seems ripe.

    • DaBearsBlog

      First TD

  • One Dump from Retirement (GP)
    • Huge Bears Penis

sure they do. Based on an interview Lynch gave in 2009.

    • Huge Bears Penis

Carson Palmer pulled his kids out of school and moved out of state. This does not mean he is not playing next year but it is a big sign that the Cards are probably looking for a QB.

      • Captain Obvious

Could there actually be a competition among multiple teams for Cutler? What if both Arizona and SF want him? Maybe we can get a 2nd round pick?

        A girl can dream…

        • CanadaBear

Pretty sure Cutler will get released. If not, I find it hard to believe the Bears would get anything more than a low round draft choice. Chronic thumb injury, coming off labrum surgery and all the other issues, doesn’t scream bargaining chip to me.

          • Huge Bears Penis

keep him on the roster. who knows what could happen, like Sam Bradford

          • BerwynBomber

Could. But my guess is if they get any sort of pre-draft offer they will take it. And going back to what CB said, they may not want the media distraction of having him in camp. Not to mention the uncertainty his presence could cause.

          • Huge Bears Penis

what do you mean by “the uncertainty would his presence cause”?

          • BerwynBomber

Basically, who will be the Bears opening day starter. Or: what’s he doing here?

The Iggles/Bradford thing may have been unintentional in that they may not have planned on dealing him a week or two before the season until a special circumstance presented itself. Hence, it is one thing to sort of fall into that. It would be another to bring a guy to camp merely to showcase him in case another team suffers a huge QB injury.

          • Huge Bears Penis

so Fox would have to give cryptic press conferences. nothing new there. Right now besides Jay we do not have a QB on the roster. I just don’t see them cutting him until there is a replacement on the roster. Besides the media distraction, no reason to cut him till you have to.

          • BerwynBomber

But he also eats up snaps/reps.

If you’re saying they will keep him around camp and all of pre-season but will have pre-determined to release him if no Bridgewater situation occurs, I can’t see that at all.

If they intend to let him seriously compete for the job, that’s another matter entirely.

          • Huge Bears Penis

Why not keep him around as long as possible? It is not costing anything. as far as reps let him work with the 3rd-4th stringers.

          • BerwynBomber

I wouldn’t necessarily be opposed to it, but I don’t think coaching staffs and (arguably) front offices think that way in regard to camp and pre-season. Basically, every player in their mind is fighting for a spot on the roster. Or, in the case of the no-brainers, working on their game for the start of the season.

Of course the GB-cutting-Sitton situations occur but I doubt if that was pre-ordained months in advance.

Again, one thing for the Bradford/PHI thing to work out by happenstance. Another to half-contrive it.

          • MB30SD

            (clears throat)

            (Whispers…. 300…..2……0)

          • Huge Bears Penis

            (YELLS 136….0…..4….2)

          • MB30SD

Erra man deserves a second chance homie!

300/2/0 until we get to the playoffs, then THA DESTROYER will have his day.

          • Huge Bears Penis

yes because 300/2/0 got us so many wins this year from him

          • MB30SD

do you think that record would have been any better with:

            1. Real WRs who didn’t drop like 6 0r 7 TD passes RIGHT in their hands?
            2. A decent D with a real Dbackfield
            3. More pass rush from healthy players
            4. Speaking of, a team without 22!!!! players on IR… most of which are starters/2nd string?

            Come on maings.

Let’s just say HdD throws erra game 300/2/0 next year (not even close to possible, but let’s say for this exercise), with a full offseason to patch known holes on the O and D, and not anywhere near to the historically bad injury luck we had this year… you don’t think those numbers would net us at least an 8-8 season?

If you say no, you’re just being argumentative for the sake of it.

          • Huge Bears Penis

            No. 6 wins tops.
            1. he had Merideth, Jeffery, Royal, and Miller for most if not all games he played.
            2. I will give you the need for a real Dbackfield.
            3. rush was not bad when Hoyer played. not great either so I will give a push on this point.
            4. when Hoyer played there were not 22 players on IR.

          • MB30SD

weak rebuttal damn it! don’t make me look for videos for all of those drops in the endzone… I’m too busy today!!

          • DaCoaches Mustache

            Don’t get the Hoyer love

          • MB30SD

read my response to HBP. It’s totally situational my maings.

If you can shit us a wilson/Matty Ice/Brady/Rodgers 2.0 given all of our current variables, I’m ALL in my brother.

          • Huge Bears Penis

Hoyer is the type of QB that you have to have a damn good Defense in order to win games and then it is not even guaranteed. He can not overcome any mistakes by the Defense. You will not win games because of his play. He is a prototypical backup, because he gives you a chance but just not enough that you can rely on him to win.

          • MB30SD

yes, and he’s our best option RIGHT NOW… for just NEXT YEAR.

We all know the deal, we should go get our franchise next year… this year is just about the best bridge for the best value so that we can fix the D and patch some O holes to get us into contention position for 2018 and beyond.

If I had the choice between HdD and say a Wilson or Matty Ice, you know I wouldn’t be making this argument. It’s totally situational… but it’s also totally the logical choice given the current landscape/timeline.

          • CanadaBear

No doubt but I hope they get rid of him before his 2017 contract is guaranteed.

          • Huge Bears Penis

none of his 2017 contract is guaranteed so we could keep him all the way up to the beginning of the season. We would have to pay him his roster bonus.

          • CanadaBear

I think the bonus is 2.5 mil. As soon as the season starts all contracts are guaranteed for that year I believe.

          • Huge Bears Penis

I just looked and if spotrac.com is right the roster bonus is only paid for the games he is on the active roster. So don’t need to worry about that.

          • MB30SD

            Fuck yes they better.

The only thing that’s guaranteed with that guy is a strip sack or a pick-6, it’s just a matter of time

          • MB30SD

            Can he play safety?

          • SC Dave

            Could almost subscribe to that

      • BerwynBomber

Hah! Sounds like you are really following that situation. Did you get the Palmers’ license plates?

By all accounts Arians loves the vertical passing game and Cutty’s certainly a bomber so it could be a match. But ARI could also keep it in house with Stanton or go after a Glennon or Foles. Either way, seems like a team that will draft a kid for development.

        • Huge Bears Penis

nope I just read the article on profootballtalk.com, they just put another article up saying it’s bogus. so….

          • BerwynBomber

Yeah, they could always keep Palmer and lowball him.

          • Huge Bears Penis

why would they have to lowball him. he is under contract.

          • BerwynBomber

I thought he was only a one year deal? You think they’re going to pay him what they did in ’16?

      • Artoo

Hot damn. That’s so pretty ridiculous investigator work.

    • CanadaBear

Didn’t sound like Lynch was that excited about him.

      • AlbertInTucson

“I like Jay, he’s a friend of mine,” Lynch said during a radio interview in 2009. “He had some growing up to do, probably still has some growing up to do. But in saying that, I think the Broncos erred in letting him go.”

    • MB30SD

      Jeeeesssss pleeeaaase

  • Captain Obvious

I think the Tom Brady TD odds means it’s 50:1 that Brady actually scores (not throws) the first TD.

    • Captain Obvious

      Re-reading, I guess that’s what Jeff meant.

Yeah, I’d put $10 on that.

      • AlbertInTucson

        He loves the sneak.

        • Johnnywad

I see what you did there.

        • Artoo

FWIW, the four-letter’s All-NFC North Team. Sensible-looking list but the selection of Montgomery and Buluga say more about the other teams’ issues at those positions than the selected themselves. Bears with five selections.

I am working up a summer vacation to take the kids to BC, and grab myself 4 days ahead of them, and picking up a 2015 911 GTS in Vancouver for those 4 days.

I intend to loop the Sea to Sky out to Kelowna:

Gotta love the exchange rate these days. Canadians, not so much. If you have some extra time Vancouver Island is great. That drive is stunning. When you get over to the Okanagan Valley (Kelowna/Penticton) it will be slow going because it’s a vacation mecca in Western Canada. If you’re into wines there are a ton of vineyards in the Southern part of the valley. Lots of great varieties and terrific wines. At the South end of the valley is Osoyoos. It’s a desert there and will be hot. The drive back to Vancouver is OK but the traffic just keeps getting worse and worse after you get to Hope. Lots of bridges in Vancouver and you really don’t want to be on the road at rush hour. Other than that, stay out of East Vancouver unless you’re into junkies and the seamy side of life. East Hastings St is junkie city.

      • One Dump from Retirement (GP)

Thank you for the driving tips!

        • MB30SD
        • CanadaBear

I have a bunch of musician friends that live in Vancouver and just about all of them have had cars;, trucks, motorcycles, etc. stolen. I’m sure it’s due to the junkies. None of them are rich (they’re musicians, they’re poor as hell) and I’m guessing they don’t live in the greatest neighborhoods. Just something to keep in the back of your mind. I don’t think violent crime is a huge deal just tons of thievery.

          • One Dump from Retirement (GP)

I was not aware that Vancouver was rife with junkies.

          • CanadaBear

When I met my wife on a bike ride in the late 90’s we started in Stanley Park (a must see) and ended up on East Hastings. There were quite a few people taking naps on the sidewalk (always a sure sign). The tour operator said if we get a flat there just keep riding until it seemed safe. It’s not like SF with all the junkies but there were plenty. Coming from Chicago none of this should worry you much I just wanted to give you a heads up.

    • MB30SD

That sounds cool, and thanks for the invite my brother.

Have only been through Vancouver on the way to blackcomb whistler, but other than that Canada doesn’t really break my top 10.

With fuckloads of work and erra vacation kinda going to my kids or my dad in Africa, I have to choose wisely.

You’re always welcome down here for a vacation… I’ll happily show you guys around for a weekend.

My next vacation is Belize with the kids in April and then Cabo in may for memorial day weekend to rage. You should come to Cabo… Sounds like Sac is going to make it. He’s actually a normal guy in person, despite his hard leanings on the blog. Right sac? Hahaha

      • One Dump from Retirement (GP)

        How safe is Belize?

        • MB30SD

You have to see it to belize it!!

Very, went there on my honeymoon… wait… actually… on second thought. VERY dangerous. hahahaha

Nah, it’s super safe in the resorts like any other place (i.e., you don’t roam non-resprt areas in Jamaica). Uses the dollar, beautiful, can do Jungle AND beach vacations in one trip (what I will do). the Jungle there is INSANE. loved it all.

Just just can’t go during hurricane season.

I liked Placencia. Hope i got tje fucking spelling right… to lazy to confirm

“Because I think Urlacher would have been about the 8th best player on the 1985 Bears defense” Jeffa twat

No fackin way Jeff. Put down the bong and pour yourself a black n tan, mmmkay?

Lack on roid’s and a few lines before the game like the rest of that 85 team and he would have personally ripped off Martins Helmet and gouged out his eyes when Mac went down.

    • One Dump from Retirement (GP)

The most athletic linebacker on the 85 Bears was Marshall, and Urlacher in his prime was a full standard deviation above him.

Urlacher was faster, stronger, quicker and overall way more athletic than Otis WIlson and don’t even start with Singletary. Urlacher v Wilson and Marshall on ABC the Superstars, Urlacher crushes them in every sport, swimming, obstacle course, weight lifting, everything.

      • MB30SD

        meat-heading

    • BerwynBomber

Does he not like Lach? He seems to blow Peanut every other week but I never see much mention of Lach (or Briggs for that matter).

Anyway, I’d rate Lach as our second best D player ever after Butkus. The first guy I’d select from the ’85 team would be Dent, but I’d rate him behind Lach.

      • Sauron’s right eyeball

I try not to compare guys that played in different eras but it was a puzzling remark by Jeff, that’s fo sho.

        • BerwynBomber

Yeah, the list thing is often a bit silly. Guess it was just my way of saying … WTF is he talking about?

      • SC Dave

Dent… Hampton. The rest dont rate really.

Butkus, however, was insanely good. Best defensive player I’ve ever seen. On any team.

And that’s saying a fucking lot.

        • BerwynBomber

Agree about Butkus. He is just a bit before my time but I have studied him and came away with the “insanely good”/best ever impression as well.

Singletary, IMV, is a bit like Lambert. Both damn good MLBs but also guys who were helped immensely by the D-lines in front of them.

          • SC Dave

I consider Urlacher better than Singletary.

Hear about the Costa Rican sports book that put up a prop, at even money, about what the Patriots would call then had to pull it down when they came to realize that the Patriots have called nothing but “Heads” for the last 2 years or so?

        lol

Even “The Pros” screw up, occassionally.

    • SC Dave

Bush the Elder will, I predict, go down historically as one of the better Presidents of my lifetime.

But the bar is sooooo low since he left office. Maybe Trump can raise it, because it has dropped wkth every President since.

      • Sauron’s right eyeball

What? Dave, the guy rode Reagans coat tails at best. He’s a sniveling worm. A true grima worm tongue if ever I saw one.

      • AlbertInTucson

I am surprised. He just got out of the hospital, no?

        Houston is Bush country.

        Austin was LBJ’s stronghold.

      • Captain Obvious

I get that people don’t like Obama, but seriously you think he was worse than GWB? The guy who pissed away over $1 trillion, over 4,000 KIA and nearly 32,000 wounded American service personnel? The guy whose tax cut ballooned the deficit for no real economic benefit, and whose regulatory policies led to the worst recession since the Great Depression? You think Obama was really worse than that?

        • BerwynBomber

That’s just wishful thinking on SCD’s part. The Bushes will remain at the bottom of POTUS lists with the son bringing up the rear

  • AlbertInTucson

Pretty entertaining catfight between Sir Charles and LeBron.

    • BearDown100393

How many rings belong to Lord Fat Mouth?

      • CanadaBear

True enough but the round mound of rebound is a lot funnier.

        • MB30SD

          He’s awesome. Dude is hilarious

      • AlbertInTucson

True, true, but, his points were valid and he still called LeBron the best player in the game.

I thought Charles kept it professional and Lebron made it personal.

DeFacto-GM, Lebron, got Max contracts for two buddies, who don’t rate such, and now he’s griping that Dan Gilbert isn’t spending enough.

        That’s weak, Lebron.

        • BerwynBomber

Valid enough points. In fairness, LeBron is also probably pissed that Durant is pretty much being given a pass (by fans and media alike) for pulling the ultimate bandwagon move to get a ring at GS while LeBron himself (and Wade and to a lesser extent Bosh) took a ton of criticism for trying to create a super team on a shitty MIA squad.

And frankly what LeBron, Wade and Bosh attempted was ten times harder than what Durant is doing. So I could see the guy thinking he gets singled out more than anyone else. Seems like more than a double standard.

          • SC Dave

            Go Spurs!!!

          • BerwynBomber

Fine by me. I’m pretty much in go-anyone-but-Golden-State. Loathe those guys.

          • Huge Bears Penis

in Durant’s defense he appears pretty humble and lowkey. He did not use the media and ESPN to make a big deal of him signing elsewhere like James did when he signed with Miami. James annoyed and pissed off a lot of people by doing that just to stoke his ego.

          • AlbertInTucson

The Jim Gray thing was ill-advised. Made him look like an egomaniac.

He owed the fans in Cleveland better than that.

He didn’t owe them staying there. He had a perfect right to move on.

But he owed them the courtesy of coming right out and saying “I’m moving on” without pretending there was a chance he would stay with that silly dog & pony show.

If he still wanted the dog & pony show to announce where he WAS going, I would have had no problem with it.

Of course, Gilbert’s reaction was a load of crap, as well.

          • BerwynBomber

I agree with that part. But LeBron was also critiqued hard for “taking the easy way out” when a) he was going to a team that was far, far away from 73 wins and back-to-back finals appearances, and b) he was leaving behind a team far, far away from being as good as OKC or an ex-teammate as talented as Westbrook. (During his first eight years in CLE, I believe James’ most offensively talented teammate was … Mo Williams.)

Plus, speaking personally, I find most of the personal judgments on athletes a bit adolescent. Most often they lead to fans and the media into hypocritical places. See LeBron/Durant. Or voting in Bagwell and Pudge while denying Clemens and Bonds. Or hammering R-berger for his past while glorifying Kobe Bryant (and conveniently forgetting/dismissing his).

It becomes a likeability/popular contest. Natural, to a degree, I suppose. But a bit childish.

        • SC Dave

I did not pay attention to it, but if it has anything to do with LeBron not being a “role model”, Barkeley can go fuck himself with the red hot poker of hypocrisy

          • AlbertInTucson

            Lebron seems a bit hypersensitive.

I believe the Cavs are already spending the most money in the NBA.

He sounds stupid demanding they spend more when he gets it wasted on max contracts for J.R. Smith and another of his buds.

  • BerwynBomber

Browns planning to pursue JimmyG. Can you imagine if the Pats win the SB AND get the #1 overall pick in the draft?

    http://www.upi.com/Sports_News/NFL/2017/01/31/Cleveland-Browns-to-pitch-trade-to-New-England-Patriots-for-Jimmy-Garoppolo/9511485924659/

    • willbest

      So Browns.

    • willbest

In the last 25 years the Pats have drafted in the top 10 five times, all 5 of them have made the pro-bowl at least once.

History of #1 picks by the Pats
      1993 – Drew Bledsoe
      1984 – Irving Fryar
      1982 – Kenneth Sims (bust)
      1971 – Jim Plunkett
1964 – Jack Concannon (a familiar name for Bears fans, but he signed with NFL Eagles instead)

      • BerwynBomber

My hunch is NE would try to then trade the #1. Then again, the Clowns also have, I believe, the #12 this year too (from the Wentz trade I assume). So maybe they could keep their #1 overall and trade the 12th pick and next year’s first rounder to NE for Jimmy G.

        Anyway, should be interesting …

        • Captain Obvious

2 1st-round picks for Garafalo? Sheesh, that would be Cleveland-ier more than trading the #1 this year.

I don’t see even Cleveland being THAT dumb. Not while they have no one other than Pryor worth throwing the ball to.

    • SC Dave

      FFS no!

    • Captain Obvious

That would be the Cleveland-est move, trading the #1 pick in the draft for Garafalo. Hopefully the wouldn’t do that… I can see them being stupid enough to trade the #12, though.

  • Sactowns#1

I’m taking ATL and the under in the first half. Although, to be honest, I pretty much HAVE to gamble on this game because this is the least interesting SB matchup in at least a decade.

    • Sauron’s right eyeball

      Good Boi Sac. Fack NE!

    • SC Dave

Disagree. Any matchup without the usual suspects on *both* sides is good.

      • Sactowns#1

Falcons are in the playoffs every single year and were in the NFC championship game 2 out of the last 5 years. How is that not a usual suspect?

  • BerwynBomber

“DaBearsBlog @dabearsblog Did you watch Mike Singletary the EIGHT DAMN YEARS he was named the best middle linebacker in the league?”

Lach was named all–pro for eight years too so I don’t know what you’re screaming about. Statistically, Singletary recorded 100 more tackles while Lach recorded double the sacks (of Singletary) and triple the amount of INTs.

Lach also didn’t play behind NEAR the D-line that Singletary did.

Personally, having watched both I would take Lach over Singletary w/out batting an eye. But I could see some preferring Samurai. But why you would be going ballistic and yelling at people who don’t is kind of odd.

You’re acting like Lach wouldn’t deserve to be on the same field as Singletary and that’s crazy. Singletary was a damn good athlete. Lach was an absolute freak of one.

    • willbest

Jeff is taking his beer strike a bit hard I think.

      • BerwynBomber

Did I see he’s jumping off the wagon on St. Pat’s?

      • SC Dave

This has to be the explanation. Or he’s gone SJW stupid.

      • AlbertInTucson

        Period?

        JUST kidding, just kidding.

    • SC Dave

Singletary is THE most overrated player I’ve ever known. Except for Favre, I mean.

    • AlbertInTucson

Closest Urlacher came to a great line in front of him was the Ted Washington-Keith Traylor period which was pretty short lived. As was the Tommie Harris reign of terror.

      • BerwynBomber

        Tommie Harris wasn’t shabby either.

In fairness, I sold Lach’s D-Lines a bit short. They were pretty damn strong at times. Just didn’t have two HoFers like Singletary’s.

Who knows? Different types of MLBs for different eras. I can see arguments for each but Jeff acting like it’s blasphemy to mention them in the same breath is nonsense.

        • AlbertInTucson

Harris was SUCH a beast until he got hurt.

          • Johnnywad

My favorite Harris play of all time was at San Diego. Chargers had the Bears backed up to about the 1. Chargers snap the ball and Harris is past the C so quickly he gets a hand on the football as the QB pulls away, knocks it down and covers it. Bears ball. All without jumping offsides.

    • Big Mike

Urlacher changed the way defense could be played. His ability to drop into pass coverage so quickly, with a huge radius for defending against the pass, took away the middle third of the field. His quickness in reacting to run and lateral pursuit shut down multiple threats. His game spying Michael Vick in his prime was a work of art. No other LB in the league could have done that.

  • Captain Odin-ous

You’ll pay for this in Odin’s name.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1w8n0L3uUCE

  • One Dump from Retirement (GP)

Urlacher is a great player. That not hate. Calling him an all-time great? I think it’s a mighty reach.

I compared him to Wilson and Marhsall. Different eras.

Modern players are so much bigger and stronger and faster than the 80s contemporaries. If you put LT in his prime next to Brian Orakpo, you would think LT was a SS in today’s NFL.

I wasn’t saying Lach was BETTER than those guys, relative to their timeframe. I was saying as an athlete, it’s not close. Guys who were 6’4″ and 250 were BIG dudes in Tommie Waddle’s day. Now they play safety.

    • Johnnywad

In a nutshell Lach was modern LB size with S wheels.

And for as meatheaded as he is, he is one of the smartest football players I’ve seen in Chicago. That D never clicked when he was out. Not even Hunter Hillenmeyer could make the calls as well as Lach.

  • BerwynBomber

Heard more scuttle on the radio today about Jay ending up in SF. Makes some sense. Lynch seems to genuinely like him and Cutty certainly has a strong Shanahan connection if both father and son end up there (as is being speculated).

But SF would also be wise to draft a kid and use Jay as a pricey bridge/mentor guy.

    • MB30SD

As long as he’s not our stripsack any more. It’s time

  • BuddhaJoe

Judging by his twats, Jeff needs a strong drink. That is all for tonight.
