Why I’ve Got Questions About the Bears Offensive Line

| May 6th, 2016

Screen Shot 2016-05-06 at 11.11.31 AM

Forget about Matt Slauson being thrown into the dumpster behind A&P well-before his expiration date. That’s old news and I’ve promised those in the Twitterverse I’ll refrain from using the words “Matt” and “Slauson” in succession any longer. To play offensive football the way John Fox wishes it to be played, the Bears don’t need a mediocre offensive line. They need a good offensive line to be a playoff team and a great line to be a championship contender. Right now? They have more questions than answers.

Question 1. Is Charles Leno going to get better?

Leno was fine in 2015. Not good. Fine. The organization believes he can be the answer at left tackle but by no means is he a certainty to even finish the season protecting Jay Cutler’s blindside. Many of Leno’s struggles in 2015 were masked by Cutler’s ability to make things happen under duress. But how long will Cutler stay on the field if he’s constantly under duress?

Question 2. Is Cody Whitehair as good as I think he is?

If he is, the Bears have a two contract starter at guard. But he’s a rookie. And rookies, regardless of my opinion, are crap shoots.

Question 3. Who is playing center?

Is it Hroniss Grasu? Does Manny “Being Manny” Ramirez win the job from him in camp? Neither is going to be challenging for an All Pro spot anytime soon.

Also, if Ramirez wins the center job, is Grasu valuable anywhere else along the line? Can he sub in at guard?

Question 4. Can the right side of the line stay healthy?

The Bears right guard and tackle are one of the team’s strengths, especially in the run game. But what happens if one of them misses substantial time? The Bears have little depth to cover Long and Massie. (Don’t mention Ted Larsen to me with a straight face.)

It might be the team’s most important unit. And right now it contains the most unknowns.

Last year I counted at LEAST six Hroniss Bonuses.

What was a Hroniss Bonus? Pronounced (Ha-ROHN-us BOW-nus)

A free play to the opposition that came from the fact the center was both underpowered and under-prepared. He fucking got PLOWED reminiscent of Flatbread on his bad leg at least a half dozen times. He cannot handle a Pot Roast straight up, can’t do it – so I spent a lot of last year missing Montgomery

    • Irish Sweetness

Thank God we still have Slauson … wait … oh we got rid of him because he can’t pull … when do Centers have to pull again ?

      • willbest

In the new Fox formation apparently. Or maybe he just refused to be the starting center. I might buy that. He was supposedly very hard on himself for every mistake that he made at center.

        • SC Dave

Pox didn’t bring him in. ‘ nuff said.

          • Huge Bear’s Penis

            better cut Gould then too.

          • MikeBrownhadaPosse

Probably not too far off now.

          • MB30SD

Can he get s kickoff into the endzone?

    • ManGod

6 mistakes in a 16 game season….I will take that from a rookie forced to start at least a year, if not 2 years to soon!

  • Irish Sweetness

    The Blog joke coming up.

    1. If Leno is terrible … Tayo.

    2. Oh he’d fkn better be …..

    3. If 33 year old Ramirez is our starting center … just …..no.

    4. If not … Tayo. RG … RT … Tayo.

    • CanadaBear

Can he play all 5 positions at once?

      • Huge Bear’s Penis

damn right he can he’s fucking TAYO, a man mountain, greatest all practice team player ever. It has to be a conspiracy that he isn’t on the field, damn the coaches that don’t see his extreme talent.

        • MB30SD

          PRACTICE SQUAD HEEEROOOOOOSSS!!!

        • CanadaBear

This should make you laugh. I was reading an article about the depth on the Bears roster. When they got to DL depth they listed all the guys on the roster and when I got to Terry Williams, I went right past it (it really didn’t even register) and a second later the light came on, Terry Fuckin’ Williams. Made me laugh. Gotta love Irish!

          • Irish Sweetness

            I can’t wait for pre-season!! 8-ball. My man!!

He’s keepin’ Tayo on his toes in practice!

    • willbest

It really does say something that the coaches don’t think he is ready.

      • Huge Bear’s Penis

        coaches don’t know crap.

  • willbest

It’s my understanding that LTs come in and dominate the NFL about as often as QBs do. To that end letting Leno develop is fine, but they have no Fing safety net there. And no Tayo doesn’t count. The guy doesn’t even get regular reps against McPhee in practice.

  • Captain Obvious

Injuries. To me, it’s all about injuries.

Without injuries, anything is possible. Barring a J’Marcus Webb, an uninjured line can work fine.

With injuries, I don’t care if Slauson is on the team and an All-Pro Center. He won’t be blocking anyone if he’s torn his pectoral. Kyle Long won’t go to the Pro Bowl at his RG position if he’s blown his knee out. Massie won’t be a beast in the run game but a liability in pass coverage if he tears his Achilles.

Without a Slauson-level backup, any injury makes Questions 1-3 moot.

The NFL often turns out to be a crapshoot. Keep your guys healthy, you can make a run into the playoffs. Build the best roster in the NFL and watch 4 starters go down with season-ending injuries, and you’re lucky to go 8-8.

    • Doc Nitty

It’s funny listening to sports radio in Seattle and hear them placing hope in J’Marcuss Webb to restore the decimated O-line. Poor suckers.

      • Picnics with the Yakuza

A faded Navy Blue Webb Nation t-shirt looks vaguely Seahawks blue.

        • KARTARIS L HARRIS

F Webb! Remember when Cutler stole on him for not blocking. If Webb really was a Chi Town Bear he would have mess Cutler up 4 embarrassing him on national TV.
          Bear Down to that

        Oh gawd. Rainy Webnation.

Nice to know something’s are universal though.

Death. Taxes. Idiocy of sports radio.

      • Irish Sweetness

        He’s alive?

  • Big Mike

Isn’t Ted Larsen from AZ on this team? They guy took Jonathan Cooper’s starting spot on a good o-line, on a team competing for the playoffs.

    • willbest

We got him on a 1-year 1.6 mil with a 350k signing bonus. He can’t be that good.

      • Big Mike

I think he’s better than Ramirez and will push Grasu.

“Fans recall the Larsen from last season who struggled in their eyes. However, when he started at left guard to start the season in place of the injured Mike Iupati, he was probably the team’s best lineman in that stretch. he also played his best last season while at right guard when Paul Fanaika was out”

        http://www.revengeofthebirds.com/2015/12/2/9839398/jonathan-cooper-benched-in-favor-of-ted-larsen

        • willbest

He almost a assuredly is, they have Ramirez on vet min. Plus he is 33. If Ramirez makes the team it is almost assuredly as the backup center and 2nd fill in at guard.

I rather loved the Larsen when it happened as a commitment to upgrade the bench in case of injury.

        • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd IpleadDa4rth! (ButchDeadLift)

“I think he’s better than Ramirez and will push Grasu.”

          I can totally see that.

Line up Ramirez at fullback, then when Grasu skates backwards into him, Ramiriz can push him forward like a tackling sled.

          Genius!

  • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd IpleadDa4rth! (ButchDeadLift)

Jeff and I don’t see eye to eye on everything, but I def agree with his assertion that Oline is the biggest fear.

I was surprised the poll reflected TE.

The way I pondered it: which guy would you rather suck?

    Miller or Leno?

The answer wasn’t even close IMO.

And that’s not even considering starting a rook, or breaking in a new RT and C.

    • willbest

I think it represents the fact that Miller isn’t guaranteed to be healthy, and TE are particularly prone to getting banged up. Plus, and I don’t know how often the Bears run 2TE, but that is pretty much off the table at the moment. Leno is a big question mark, but his star is rising.

      • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd IpleadDa4rth! (ButchDeadLift)

The 2nd TE is usually a defacto LT. They’re usually rather easy to acquire.

I too am worried about Miller’s health, but TEs to me are more of a luxury.

        LT is an absolute necessity.

We can get by with Kellen Davis. We CAN NOT get by with Webb.

(Plus, there’s usu vet TEs available during the season, not many LTs growing from Angelo’s tree)

        That’s my take.

        • MB30SD

Fuck you for saying those three names in one post, I believe you just opened the 7th door to hell and demons have been spewing out since.

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd IpleadDa4rth! (ButchDeadLift)

At least I didn’t bring up Conte!

            Oh, wait….

          • MB30SD

            Down vote

    • Irish Sweetness

If it’s a choice between sucking off Charles Leno or Zach Miller … is the other option death? If yes, then I’ll go with the white guy.

      • MikeBrownhadaPosse

I blame Butch for teeing you up on that one.

        • Irish Sweetness

The door was jammed open. Nature abhors a vacuum.

    • Captain Obvious

The Oline is 5 positions. Of COURSE that’s a big fear. If the entire Oline sucks, that’s 5 positions of sucking, plus the effect it has on the QB and the running game. If the TE sucks, then it doesn’t have nearly the impact of the team.

That said, the Oline has 5 potentially good players, plus some potentially capable backups.

Miller is the only good TE we have. Everything behind him is JAG. And Miller has a history of season-ending injuries.

So, while Oline is more important, TE is a much thinner, scarier position.

      That’s my logic.

  • Shady

I hate how Twitter has changed Jeff’s approach to this blog. Instead of well written, insightful thoughts and analysis, we get a collection of tweets in bullet point or numbered format. I mean I get it, reaching the public on Twitter is a requirement for business, but letting affect the content is an unfortunate consequence.

But hey, I assume most people are here for the comments section anyway.

    • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd IpleadDa4rth! (ButchDeadLift)

“But hey, I assume most people are here for the comments section anyway.”

      Correct.

HOWEVER, most of us came on board because Jeff originally was NOT Twitteresque.

Though Jeff has always found writing in the off-season hard overall.

      #TwitterKillingWriting

      • willbest

Yes well its hard to have commentary when there is nothing to comment on

        • Huge Bear’s Penis

we seem to find something to fall back on. Race, Religion, Politics, Conspiracy, and boobs(don’t forget BOOBS) which has been lacking lately.

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd IpleadDa4rth! (ButchDeadLift)

            default is ALWAYS boobs.

See what happened during the draft? No tits on Friday. It took a draft.

            I like boobs.

            Congratulations!

          • Bobby Douglass

Thank you. Thank you very much.

        • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd IpleadDa4rth! (ButchDeadLift)

Writing isn’t easy. If Jeff is out of actual ideas and not just twitterlines rehashed, he should allow others to post.

I think there was a time when he was adamant ONLY he would post, but has somewhat acknowledged he’s not as prolific (or inspired) as he once was by allowing Andy in the mix (Also a nice backup for Cutty propaganda).

It happens. Sometimes writers get burnt out.

But if he doesn’t really want to deal with the off-season, then open it up to the regs.

I think he owes like one or two of us a guess article anyways from like 3-4 years ago.

          • MikeBrownhadaPosse

            Yes, yes he does

          • Irish Sweetness

Aren’t we writing guest articles for free anyway? Everyday? Not to give ourselves a BJ or anything, but most of the content is .. .y’know … US.

            Gravity travels faster than light.

“You are the least intelligent and humorous of all of your friends…” etc.

I mean it’s hard enough hearing that from a human …

          • Huge Bear’s Penis

girlfriend? that took a turn.I thought it was just a debate on best tits on an alien.

          • willbest

Apparently when it comes to aliens, Irish is ready to settle down.

          • Huge Bear’s Penis

surprisingly that does not shock me.

          • Irish Sweetness

I’m thinking long term with T’Pol .. .like ten years ago … but with wormholes I guess that’s still possible. “Hey, wouldn’t mind putting a worm in her hole …” etc.

          • willbest

I guess she ages twice as slowly as you which is a big plus for the man. However, and I am not an expert on this, but can’t she only get knocked up every 7 years? Makes it pretty rough in the family planning department. Also she is going to be an Ice Queen the entire time unless you get her addicted to that chemical.

          • Huge Bear’s Penis

what the hell? best tits to girlfriend material to starting a family. this is devolving to rapidly.

          • willbest

Irish is the hopeless romantic here, I am just trying to help him weigh the pros and cons of his choice of one fictional character over another.

          • Huge Bear’s Penis

Ok, well here is my top 3 tits on aliens.
            1. Natasha Henstridge – alien in Species
            2. Seven
            3. the 3 titted prostitute on Total Recall. 3 is always better than 2.

          • willbest

            Can’t object to your #1 and 2.

I don’t know about #3. I don’t think she is technically an alien. Most certainly not in the reboot since that takes place entirely on Earth. And the reboot is the better looking three breasted woman.

          • Huge Bear’s Penis

i was like 12 or 13 when i saw Total Recall, those boobs made an impact on my young mind. Also technically Seven was a human that had been assimilated, so does that make her an alien?

          • willbest

Alien enough at that point. She had bionic eyes, required a stasis pod and other things.

          • burntorangenavyblue

What about Leeloo (sp?) from 5th element? Drools

          • Huge Bear’s Penis

            oh damn forgot about her.

got to agree. Jeff’s writing was almost poetic at times in the past, now it’s like you said just a collection of thoughts. I get it though, he has been doing this for a long time and it’s got to be hard to write with the same passion with the progression of time and the regression of the team for years, and it is the off-season.

    Some ideas for Jeff.

    1. Bring back Rev Rant back! Yeah, I know it’s the offseason , but I know there’s something tangentially Bears related he’s irate about.

    2. Shoot the breeze with Jahns once a week. Those became my fav very quickly. Don’t know if Jahns is too “Hollywood” now and overly busy, but a once a week Bears rehash would be nice.

    3. Open up for guest articles. Andy has been a nice addition, esp covering all things slave-auction and draft. I don’t suggest Jeff read all entries (as a guy who corrected english papers, I wouldn’t wish that on anyone), but from certain trusted bloggers or regs.

3a. I think what we’re missing a bit is covering the Bears from an XsandOs angle So ideally, aforementioned guest writer could inform us on why Slauson was dumped, or how Bullard needs to improve technically, or why Fuller is (or isn’t) a fit in Fangio’s secondary, etc.

Or maybe some comic relief football. Parody articles, homer articles…

    4. Obviously, some interviews, even if it’s with bubble-roster bears. I know Jeff can’t pull the hot-shot ones like Cutty, but even the lower tier guys would be kinda cool. In fact, the no-names one might actually be better cuz no one loves a scrappy underdog more than this blog! (Irish?)

    Just some ideas.

None of these will happened, but can’t say I didn’t pull my weight.

    • EnderWiggin

I also liked the radiocast he did out of… Iowa? But maybe they only talk Bears during the season.

      • Shady

Problem is most of those shows are like 3-4 in the afternoon and the working folk can’t tune in. I think you and R2 had a good idea doing the show in the envenings when more people are available.

        • willbest

Except those are like his evenings.

    • MikeBrownhadaPosse

I would settle for straight up transcripts of Jeff and Rev talking Bears at the bar.

If not for the fact that the audio almost certainly be terrible, you might be on to something.
Live webcast from Jeff and Rev at Josie’s…I like it.

    • Shady

      Good ideas Butch.

Not sure how many guys were around for Your Boy Roy, but he hosted a call in show where viewers/listeners could call in and talk Bears (or beer, food, etc) like a radio station. I have no idea about the technical aspects of this, but I’m sure we have enough bright people on da blog that could help Jeff and Noah figure it out. I think I would enjoy listening to Jeff hang up on callers.

As to Cody, many pundits bring up Zach Martin in the same breath.

I know that’s VERY high expectations, but how bomb would that be having Long/Cody anchor the interior for the next decade?

    • Shady

That would be nice, but apparently Cody has zero experience playing in a 3-point stance. Not good.

Also, he’s white. And his name is Whitehair. That breaks at least two of Yonny’s draft rules.

            Hahahaha

          • Cutty of Mt. Olivet Nazarene

Braverman is truly tiny. Edelman is way bigger than people think. He’s like 5’11 200lbs of pure quick and burst.
            Amendola is 5’10 190

They are just different players and not only play with physicality but with that quickness, burst and precision route running. They are way bigger than Braverman.

You’d be hard pressed to tell me that Braverman makes the squad over a Josh Bellamy, Marc Mariani, Cam Meredith or any other insert name of 6’0 205 lb athletic freak special teams player. There is simply no room for this little guy on the team.

          • Irish Sweetness

Give him a shot. He looks more zippy than Mariani and has really good hands. Those tiny guys are tricky little dudes, plus we don’t seem to have a nailed-down return man. He returns kicks and punts. I’m pulling for him in Mariani’s spot.

The “Never played in a 3 point stance” is a common concern with most O-lineman and all the spread offenses they come from and likely the reason for a seemingly high failure/disappointment rate of late at the position.

The NFL seems content with not having an adequate farm system

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd IpleadDa4rth! (ButchDeadLift)

College used to be more in line with the NFL.

Running. Traditional drop back white QBs. 4-3 defenses.

College has almost done a 180 on that.

Traditional drop back QBs are hard to come by and a huge investment. It’s easier to plug in running QBs who don’t need to famiilarize themselves with complex systems (just look at the sideline poster. Daffy Duck + green + bananas, break!).

So naturally, the Ds tried to counter this.

And now, outside some programs like Bama, few schools resemble anything like the NFL,and as such, when the prospects enter, they are dreadfully handicapped.

Some positions are handicapped more than others.

QB and S churning out perhaps the least prepared.

While HB and WR seem relatively immune.

      • Irish Sweetness

This was my concern with the pick, and that they traded down TWICE to get a small college tackle that they want to play Guard in the NFL. Not a mistake in itself necessarily … but when you figure in cutting 30 year old Slauson, it’s a head-scratcher. Now you’re committed to this draft pick – that, like all draft picks – may or may not work out in the pro game.

I’d like to see the following poll on DBB :

        Yes/No

Would you have liked to see the Bears stay put in the second round, and draft Henry / Ward/ Robinson / Correa / Alexander etc., and keep Slauson …..rather than trade down for Whitehair? I would imagine 70-80% votes the former?.

        • Captain Obvious

Kansas State isn’t a “small college”.

They’re consistently ranked in the Top 25, and have appeared in major bowls several times in the last 15 years. Darren Sproles, Terrence Newman, and Josh Freeman are just three guys I can pick from KSU off the top of my head–sure, Josh Freeman was a bust, but he was a legit first-round pick.

And KSU is pretty close to Fort Riley, home of the Big Red One.

  • ManGod

The biggest fear this season will be the coaching! I fear J Fox and D Loggains will depend to much on the run and forget the deep ball to often. When you look at the FA signings and the draft combined, the Bears are definitely building a run first OL. There is a lack of talent in pass protection along the OL with the strong points and strength of the OL being centered in run blocking. I like J Fox as a HC, but he often tries to run the ball when he should just let his QB take the shot.

    • Picnics with the Yakuza

Really, and your source of information? Because he is not listed in their signings, on the roster or mentioned in any sports casts. Also, I seriously doubt the truth of that as he is 31 years old and never been more than a blocking FB in the NFL.

    • Captain Obvious

“Depend too much on the run”

This is nonsensical. If we’re successful running the ball, that’s a winning strategy. A strong running game, clock-control offense actually opens up the deep ball. A dink-and-dunk WC offense eschews the deep ball.

So not only are you afraid of the wrong thing, a strong running game opens up exactly what you want–play-action deep balls.

      • Huge Bear’s Penis

also helps the defense cuz they ain’t on the field as much.

      • Irish Sweetness

This. Always this. Ditka ball. Tough defense and three yards and a cloud of dust on offense.

      • ManGod

Yes a strong running game does all of that, but when the coach calls a run play to gain a first with 5 or more yds to go on 3rd….that is not productive when your RB’s are only averaging 2.8-3.6 yds per carry. Fox admitted on more than one occasion the Bears ran the ball when they should have went with the pass last season, his excuse was simple” I felt we had a better chance to make the first or pin them deep with the punt”…needless to say that thinking cost us at least 1 game against Detroit and possibly 2 others. If you have a strong run game, you will have backs that average over 4 yds per carry, if not, then you have to trust your QB and WR to complete that pass and get the first.

    • Irish Sweetness

Cutty doesn’t hit that deep ball too well. Running is safer.

Sure would rather have Derrick Henry than Cody Whitehair though. That would make it a lot easier.

      • ManGod

Jay Cutler is one of the most accurate deep ball passers in the NFL…..what planet have you been living on? His complete rate for deep balls is by far better than his overall short passing game. That is why he has always been heralded as the next B Favre. It his decision making under duress that has always been his downfall and led to bad throw resulting in interceptions.

        • CanadaBear

I’m going with Irish on this one. There is no way in hell his completion percentage is higher on long passes than short passes.

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd IpleadDa4rth! (ButchDeadLift)

It would be interesting to see how Cutty compares to the rest of the QB starters with the long ball.

He does have a live arm, and can chuck it deep from multiple platforms, but how many of those connect?

          • CanadaBear

Exactly. Jay isn’t known for his accuracy, just a live arm. Even on short to medium passes, he completes most of them but rarely is the guy in stride. The long bombs are mostly jump balls that BMarsh, AJ and the Black Uni/Miller won.

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd IpleadDa4rth! (ButchDeadLift)

However, to save Yonny some gray hairs,

Cutty was under duress under Martz/Tice, not to mention his WR corp where Knox was the only real deep threat.

Dr Death was all WCO, so really no chance to chuck it deep except those jump balls.

Last year Alshon hurt his vag again, so he couldn’t go deep.

I’ll be very interested to see how he does with a certified deep threat in White (who is fast, physical, with hands) and with decent blocking.

If our run game rocks, and they use PA bootleg, that deep ball should connect more.

But, it’s all conjecture at this point.

          • Huge Bear’s Penis

don’t for get stone hands Hester. How many balls bounced off his hands on go routes?

          • ManGod

Then you would both be wrong….http://www.nfl.com/player/jaycutler/2495824/situational stats
Jay has a higher TD ratio per attempt when he is throwing deep and especially in the 4th quarter when a score will win or tie the game.

Does anyone else find it odd that sports fans are supposed to care about 3 horse races each year?

    • Irish Sweetness

      ???

Only Basketball fans care about basketball, baseball fans care about baseball … I don’t get it.

I love horse racing, flat and jumps, but I get that there are people who weren’t brought up on racetracks like me.

      • CanadaBear

The only people that give a shit about horse racing are either in the biz or are gamblers. Everyone else, not so much. It’s hard to relate to the jockies unless you’re 5 foot and 110 lbs. Really difficult to relate to a horse!! Not to mention, the sport is more crooked than the Olympic/FIFA bidding processes.

        • Irish Sweetness

          ???

There are fans of horse-racing who are not in the biz. Most of Ireland in fact.
Are we supposed to care about Golf, Nascar, Curling?

          • CanadaBear

            Aren’t the fans all gambling?

          • Irish Sweetness

I don’t know. If people go racing then most would ‘have an interest’. But then in the Middle East, the track will be full to the rafters with not a penny laid. Money is tied to racing in the west, but even if I’m not having a bet, a lot of us watch the big flat races to see which bloodlines win.

          • CanadaBear

You are the first person I’ve ever met that is a horse racing fan with or without the gambling component.

          • Irish Sweetness

Bloodlines are interesting. The Northern Dancer line is still dominant. He was an unremarkable Canadian-bred horse as it happens. He translated his X-factor to one of his sons, Sadler’s Wells, trained by the great Vincent O’ Brien, and to date is the most successful sire in history. Before my dear old dad passed away he got me into Coolmore stud to have my photo taken with him. I got to kiss him on the cheek! One of his colts, Galileo seems to have the magic now. He sired the great Frankel and most of the Derby winner these days. His Dam, Urban Sea, also gave birth to Sea The Stars. It’s all in the blood.

Gambling is definitely huge in racing, but when you see greatness, it makes grown men cry. I don’t think football could ever make me cry. A super bowl wouldn’t even do it. But seeing Sea The Stars great achievements, culminating in his Arc De Triomphe victory … niagara falls. Frankel devastating the 2000 Guineas field by 10 lengths would have stirred the hardest of hearts. Glad my dad got to see them both.

          • CanadaBear

Good on ya Irish! But would the industry survive if you couldn’t gamble?

          • Johnnywad

It wouldn’t last a week. I love me some horse racing but it exists because of gambling.

          • CanadaBear

Where I used to live there was a track with trotters. We used to go about once a year for a night out. Once they legalized gambling in the area the track was closed in about 6 months. They used the facility for off track betting after that.

          • Johnnywad

There are lots of shit hole tracks around the country that used to run live races but now just have simulcast OTB. That’s where you find your problem gamblers.

I’ve been to the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, Travers Stakes and the Breeders Cup. Those experiences are fantastic. World class horses and a crowd of people just looking to have a good time. While there are plenty of hard core gamblers at those events, there are still more people that just come for the day. It’s a great time.

          • CanadaBear

Gotta take your word for it. The other places, ugh.

          • CanadaBear

Pretty sure you bet on bike racing in Europe so it must be on the internet. Like anything. I’m sure you bet on any crazy thing. I don’t think bike racing is fixed but they certainly turned a blind eye to doping for a long time.

  • bearfacts

I’d say the only real concern mentioned here would be the health of not just Long and Massie but of the OL in general. Otherwise it’s a whole lot like a Chicken Little story and unless you’re in Syosset, NY the sky is not falling and even then it was only airplane parts.

That OL needed help and the only way to get it in the long run is to draft for it and we did. Signing three FAs was simple deference to the fact that we couldn’t afford to draft four OL this year. Unless I’m missing something this deal looks far better than it did a year ago when we had an injured and aging Jermon Bushrod trying to reclaim his job at LT, no solid RT prospects period, a different one year stop gap OC plus a rookie, and Vlad “the imploder” Ducasse as a backup OG. In all honesty I’ll take the present set up over that one any day.

QUOTE; “To play offensive football the way John Fox wishes it to be played, the Bears don’t need a mediocre offensive line.”

You’re right. We do need a great OL but it takes a few drafts and some luck to build one just like it did back in the ’80s when it took three years to accumulate the five who started the Super Bowl and became the “Black and Blues Brothers”. It also takes the right players and that’s the part that many are missing about the departure of Matt Slauson. (I’m not limited to using his name) Hey, I didn’t like it much either but at least I understand why.

The pure fact is Matt isn’t a great fit for any team who wants to operate a zone blocking scheme to run behind and for that matter Matt Forte wasn’t a perfect RB for it either. So this had far less to do with their lack of performance than it did with their age and the fact that they simply don’t fit the kind of running scheme John Fox wants to use. That scheme uses lighter, quicker, more agile interior linemen and OTs and quick one-cut RBs with good vision and a north/south running style.

It’s the same scheme Denver has used as far back as I can remember. I’ve lived here since 1983 and and as I recall it’s gotten them to quite a few Super Bowls since then. To be painfully honest about it the RBs and OL are somewhat less important than the scheme itself and many have come and gone over the years but the scheme itself remained. That scheme has made 1000 yard plus RBs out of late round draft picks and UDFAs and in most years the OL only averaged around 300lbs per man and with the exception of a few Pro Bowlers the OL was seldom manned by the same five guys from one year to the next.

We’re gonna have to live with what we have for at least one more year but is it really that bad? Leno played well overall. He had a few rough spots against some very good pass rushers but he was essentially a rookie LT at a position that often takes two to three years to develop fully at. Should we go back to JWebb or Omigod Omiyale or think Leno can improve? Cody Whitehair was the top ranked OG in the draft and the one of the most NFL ready OL in the draft. He should start but if not Ted Larsen has 57 NFL starts under his belt and is a better fit as a run blocker than Slauson was. Like Leno Grasu had some rough spots with some of the bigger NTs but then so did Olin Kruetz when he was a rookie until he gained a bit more strength and learned how to use his leverage better. Olin became a Pro Bowl OC and Grasu has many of the same physical traits he just needs to develop a mean streak. Should he bust Bobby Massie’s jaw for practice to prove it?

Kyle Long and Bobby Massie are down in AZ not only working on conditioning but also working on the communication and coordination that’s just as important as talent on the OL. They’re the new vet leaders now. It’ll be up to them to help instill that same work ethic and coordination in the other three and I have no doubt they’ll do it. Yeah, we’re still a little thin and somewhat underdeveloped as far as the OL goes but it’s an improved version of the 2015 OL and they’ll more than like be even more improved in November than they are in September. The depth at OG and OC is good but if we lose a starting OT was may be hurting unless Pace can sign a vet OT as a swing tackle or another of those we have on the roster emerges as a prospect for it. Becton and Fabaluje seem to be the two most likely.

All I know is we struggled to average 4 ypc running the ball last year and on a John Fox team that emphasizes a ball control offense and a tough attacking defense that’s not nearly good enough. So adjustments were made to bring in players who are better fits for the scheme Fox wants to use and as Lovie would say, “we’ll go from there”.

I understand in a zone scheme you want someone with burst, but a big part of zone running success is patience and vision.

I know patience and vision isn’t as sexy as burst and brutality, but it’s still vital in zone running, and Forte IMO had the best patience and vision in the NFL.

But why are people constantly referring to Whitehair as an OG? He played LT in college.

      • CanadaBear

Because everyone is predicting he will be an OG this year.

        • Irish Sweetness

He’d have to I guess. But it doesn’t mean he can start on day one, or even season one. There are four guards ahead of him on the depth chart. Actual guards.

          • CanadaBear

He’s a 2nd rd pick. He will get every chance to start at LG.

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd IpleadDa4rth! (ButchDeadLift)

Irish, they didn’t let Slauson go to start fucking Larsen or worse, Grasu.

Whitehair will have to massively underwhelm for him to ride pine.

And NO WAY he starts at LT.

If he does, that means he’s like Joe Fucking THomas’ illegitimate son, and we should all rejoice in song and dance.

If he even beats out Massie, that would be a minor miracle. Leno and Massie aren’t all-pro, but they are professional NFL starters. For a rook to come in and take their job, well, wow. I would almost welcome it, but I aint’ holding my breath.

          • Irish Sweetness

Nobody suggested he play LT, but that starting at guard is a transition.

      • Huge Bear’s Penis

fyi, a lot of T in college end up as guards, not sure why you keep referring to his college position like it should be set in stone. Long was a Tackle in college, Larsen played 25 games at Center and 43 games at DT at NC State. Some players just project to the NFL at guard.

        • Irish Sweetness

Just pointing out that for he last two years he played one position, and we expect him to play in a different position – in the NFL mind – from day one?

          • Huge Bear’s Penis

maybe they didn’t like his foot work, technique, strength or speed, for the NFL game. whereas deficiencies in those areas would not be as noticeable in the College game because of the level competition. So in the NFL the kid could grade out to a below average T, but grade out to be a good to great G.

      • willbest

If Whitehair were going to play LT hypothetically it would make even less sense to cut Slauson.

    • http://www.dabearsbeat.com/ Johnathan Wood

The OL doesn’t look all that different than going into last year, with the exception of Slauson being replaced by Whitehair.

      Long is a proven stud.

C is an unproven Grasu competing with a journeyman veteran (Montgomery last year, Ramirez this year) who’s old.

Massie is about the same as Bushrod (a competent veteran OT who was overpaid in FA).

Leno is about the same as Mills was (late round pick heading into his 3rd year with plenty of experience, but his quality of play to that point was not good enough to say you’re really happy with him).

Fabuluje is the new Leno (late round pick with basically no experience but potential heading into his 2nd year, unknown).

Larsen is the new Ducasse (veteran backup who should only be starting if shit hits the fan).

The only real big difference is that they replaced Slauson with a highly regarded rookie and Grasu has another year of experience. The question at OT shifted from LT to RT.

Hopefully they stay healthier this year. Any improvement to the OL would come from that and/or young guys being better.

      • CanadaBear

I like Massie more than you but gotta agree with this assessment. I can’t imagine Larsen is as bad as Ducasse.

        • http://www.dabearsbeat.com/ Johnathan Wood

People forget how solid Bushrod was before his back gave out on him.

    • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd IpleadDa4rth! (ButchDeadLift)

See, this would be an example of a “guest article”.

However, did he just mention Grasu and Olin in the same breath?

“Olin became a Pro Bowl OC and Grasu has many of the same physical traits he just needs to develop a mean streak”

You can’t just develop a meanstreak. If a player wasn’t mauling and driving dlinemen into the dirt in college and HS, he’s not just gonna wake up with that mentality in the NFL.

But you are right that Grasu needs to ovbiously more weight, strength, leverage. I know I tease him, but hopefully he can improve in those areas and become a functional starter.

But an Olin? I don’t see that in his makeup.

Whitehair on the other hand gives me much more hope.

He’s definitely as physical and tough as ‘old beef jerky’.

And you’re right about the Denver oline scheme pretty much just using Oline and HBs like a cogg. Maybe that’s something we have to get used in Chi since we love our Olinemen and worship our HBs. We’re not used to just replacing them like car filters.

However, all chop blocks are now illegal, so I wonder if that scheme will remain as effective overall.

Denver for years were infamous for chopblocking, and many thought hey were dirty motherfuckers. Now that has been legislated out. Will it handicap the system?

Something I haven’t really heard anyone really debate. (Article!)

I still agree with Jeff though. Oline is still the biggest concern. It was a big concern last year too, but was overshadowed by.

      1. Cutty quitting. WIll he continue being Bortleesque?
      2. Whole new defensive system (how will Mullett, Houston, Sutton, Young, etc fit)
      3. Whole new regime. How will players respond.
      4. Pass rush. Is McPhee for reals? How about the rest?
      5. ILB. Chicken Dinner and the rest huge question marks.

Then it was like Oline, Leno any good, how will Long do at RT?
(safety was still a concern too – Amos and Rolle?)

It’s satisfying to know that many of those concerns have been assuaged .
Cutty bounced back. Not everyone fit, but we personeell on D still relatively effective. The players who didn’t buy in were shipped out. McPhee had a rough offseason but became a menace and the face of the D. Pass rush and ILB obviously bombed, but the regime has attacked those this offseason.

So, that leaves Oline (and yes, S) still concerns, and to a certain extend, the Dline.

Since Bennett departed and Miller is inj prone, and we failed to sign any other vet FA, that position seems vulnerable.

But it’s not like POX didn’t try to get depth there. I really wanted Graham, and I think they did too, but he chose to bet on himself in a 1yrs prove it deal with the Cards.

The rest of the TEs were just ridiculously overpaid. POX puckered up I guess, and decided we’ll gamble a bit on that this year.

Can’t address all holes in one offseason., afterall, but Pox sure has tried.

With Dallas’ line I’m drafting the shit out of Zeke Elliott this year in Fantasy. Zeke and Le’veon Bell. Antonio, Le’Veon and Big Ben could all do the trifecta at their positions this year. Roth has shed a stone apparently. Career years for all three perhaps.

30??? May the seeds in the hearts of their families blossom …

Ya gots me thinkin. Why is ‘Chicago’ named so? According to http://www.todayifoundout.com :

Given the city’s roots, it probably won’t surprise you to learn that “Chicago” derives from a Native American word. However, there are different theories about which specific word it was derived from. The Native Americans who populated the area before European settlement had several different words that sounded similar to Chicago. One of the popular theories is that it was named after a chieftain named Chicagou who was reportedly drowned in the Chicago River. Other ideas about the origin include a derivative of “shecaugo” meaning “playful waters” or “chocago” meaning “destitute.” The origin of the name is wildly contested among academics due to the small number of documents contemporary to the time of Chicago’s establishment that actually discuss how it was named.

All that being said, the most accepted name origin is the Miami-Illinois word “shikaakwa,” which means “striped skunk” or “smelly onion”. Not exactly a glamorous name origin either way, right? Most historians think that the “onion” version is correct because the Miami-Illinois were known for naming natural landmarks after plants that grew in or near them, while naming something after an animal was a rarity. The plant-based naming system was practical because it was a reminder of what plants grew where, providing an easy reference for gathering food. Plant-based naming is also prevalent in other Algonquin languages. The Miami-Illinois people have also left their mark on several rivers in the area, including Indiana’s Salamonie River (from oonsaalamooni siipiiwi, or bloodroot river) and Sugar Creek (from ahsenaamisi siipiiwi, or maple tree sugar river).

It is therefore likely that “Shikaakwa” was the word for the a stream near Chicago because of the leeks or “smelly onions” that grew in the watershed. When the French began their explorations of the area, they took the word and “Frenchified” it, turning it into the “Chicago” we know today. The explorer Robert de la Salle is credited with recording the first precursor to Chicago, which he called “Checagou.”

Maybe we can reap a mid-rd compensatory pick.

Though we did bring in some FAs of our own. I never understand that convoluted formula they use to hand out comp picks.

I actually believe we did Slauson a favor.

Maybe we weren’t expecting to draft Whitehair, but once we did, and the writing was on the wall, the Bears figure they’d just release him so he can choose his own team, as opposed to trading him to some shit team like Cleveland for a 6th.

  • BearDown100393

“To play offensive football the way John Fox wishes it to be played, the Bears don’t need a mediocre offensive line.”

Is there a team that believes a mediocre (or less) offensive line is going to get the job done for any strategy from any head coach? Save perhaps Trestman?

    • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd IpleadDa4rth! (ButchDeadLift)

Some don’t really prioritize it, which seems counter-intuitive, but it’s true.

I think some teams “trust” their QBs to make up for a mediocre or even bad Oline.

Martz/Tice to an extent did this.

More recent examples. Pats, Chargers, Panthers, Saints, and Colts.

Past two years all those teams were in desperate need of Oline upgrade, but for some reason or other, they don’t invest much in it.

They think Brady, Rivers, Cam, Bress and Luck will pull a rabbit out of their ass every year.

      • MB30SD

I was telling this to my chargers buddies on draft day….

I hope you guys take tunsil and not bosa or ramsey.

        Then, boom. Hahaha

      • http://www.dabearsbeat.com/ Johnathan Wood

NE actually has a pretty good OL with a lot invested in it. Both of their starting OTs were 1st round picks, and their 3 starting interior OL were 4th round picks, all by NE. They also have a 3rd and 4th invested in backups.

The problem last year was that a ton of guys got hurt, which is why the OL struggled so badly.

    • http://www.dabearsbeat.com/ Johnathan Wood

I looked at this for Magazu (who’s been Fox’s OL coach for the last 10 years). The lines are typically above average in run blocking an average in pass blocking. The one thing they consistently excel at is run blocking to get 5-10 yard gains, aka picking up LBs at the 2nd level.

So in that regard wanting more mobile/agile OL makes sense. You see that with the guys they’ve drafted, as Grasu and Whitehair are both very agile but have less than ideal strength.

Starting off with a good relationship with the player and their agent. Showing commitment to them. Getting them their signing bonus money sooner.

But it wasn’t just Stein’s ability get it done quickly, it was his ability to not mortgage the future doing it.

          • Irish Sweetness

I always thought that the reason Stein was always first to get everyone signed meant he was giving away too much money?

          • willbest

The reason was always he started working on it immediately, and apparently a lot of general counsels take vacation this time of year.

And that arguably could have been an issue before the current CBA imposed a rookie wage scale. Now they are pretty simple contracts because you are just negotiating when the player gets the money, not if they will.

          • http://www.dabearsbeat.com/ Johnathan Wood

Since the new CBA kicked in (2011 season), the value of each draft pick is slotted. All that has to be hashed out is how much of that is guaranteed money.

BTW, I teased my Floyd article earlier this week. Here it is: http://bearswire.usatoday.com/2016/05/07/leonard-floyds-combine-measurables-dont-correlate-with-historical-success/

The TL;DR: People with Floyd’s combo of weight and 3-cone time don’t succeed in the NFL as pass rushers.

The caveat: Dannehy says Floyd was sick at the Pro Day (he didn’t run 3-cone at the Combine), so the 3-cone isn’t accurate.

    • Irish Sweetness

And how do those stats project him at run-tackling and pass coverage? We already know that Fangio blitzes less than the 90th percentile.

      • http://www.dabearsbeat.com/ Johnathan Wood

they drafted him to be an edge rusher. That’s not blitzing.

        • Irish Sweetness

I didn’t hear that in the pressers. Far from that. He’ll be doing a lot of things, he won’t be one of those one-dimensional rushers. And stats be damned, we’ll see how does in the rushing game. It’s like we want to bury players before they’ve played a down in the NFL. Let them play first.

          • http://www.dabearsbeat.com/ Johnathan Wood

            Straight from Ryan Pace:

“I think with him playing more of a pass rush position, he’ll have more production.”

“This is the type of player that can help that, so again add a major pass rush threat to our defense.”

“So, I don’t think you can have enough pass rushers in today’s game and I think if you look at the playoffs this past year it showed that. You need to load up on pass rushers and that is what we are doing.”

They just started up this series of “wire” sites a few months ago. Have them for every NFL team. Kind of similar to SB Nation, IMO. That was my worry.

Floyd is fast, but is he “long-legged”?

When I first saw his film, he didn’t look 6’6, which is good. He seemed explosive, agile and with unusual bend for a guy his size.

But I just don’t know of many 6’6 skinny 3-4 edge rushers.

Wow, I was gonna cite Jayson Taylor since he weighed 230, but apparently he’s only 6’2, and I don’t see his 3cone drill

      http://www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings/profilexnews.php?pyid=129295&draftyear=2015&genpos=ILB

Also, like I mentioned, he’s gonna be 24, so it’s not like he’s gonna have a Scotty Pippen growth spurt.

Ideally, a top 10 pick is prototypical.

So for edge, you either fit the Von Miller mode (smaller, but with crazy measurables) or the McPhee type, 6’5 260ish.

Floyd doesn’t really slot into either archetype – a “tweener” – and as Lorin correctly observers, history is stacked against such players (esp with those 3cone #s) and why I initially wasn’t all that excited for the pick.

But, I guess we gotta trust Fangio, right? He seemed to hit on the Smiths and McDonald, Willis, Bowman, etc

He’s got the frame to put on weight – he might turn out to be a frightening Mike.

        • MB30SD

No, he really doesn’t at all my maings. It’s been a self-stated issue of his, his whole life.

Let’s all just bow our heads and pray. Trac, you get two extra hail marry’s and an extra how’s yafathah

“If Grasu develops into frontline starter.”

Which is HOW likely after watching him struggle last year?

      two words: natural suppliments

        “natural” “supplements”

        6. Knowing how to use sarcasm is a must to communicate with an American.

If you put your bent middle and index fingers of both
hands in the air, you are making finger quotation marks. It means you do
not believe what you are saying. You can also say, “or so called.”

How many offensive linemen succeed in their first year in the NFL though? Added to that, he was playing Center and is responsible for calling and recognizing a lot of stuff. He was thrust in before he was ready, that’s all. He’ll be good to go. Whitehair is the total noob on the line. He’s the worry.

  • Picnics with the Yakuza

Butch commented that Nkemdiche sounds like something you would be served while on a picnic with the Yakuza. Not one for allowing comedy gold to fade into the ether, it appears this guy only has one speed: kill.

I don’t know, maybe I’m just oneathems old Skool meathead neanderthals, but how could you not want a guy like that on your defense. How?!?!

        Exhibit A: Randy Gregory
Exhibit B: one broken patio door
        Exhibit C: seven synthetic j’s
Exhibit D: reputation for being a slacker on game day
        Prosecution rests.

Really good stuff from Biggs. If Grasu develops into frontline starter it’s game changer for Bears offense in 2016. – Jeff

    Mmmmm steaks….

Smiling at Jamie Dukes and the crew on Total Access clamoring for Skittles to get into the Hall of Fame.

35 names have more yardage. Thirty. Five.

    • Cutty of Mt. Olivet Nazarene

Lynch is a solid running back. That is all. Putting Lynch in would be like putting a guy like Joe Nam…….oh, bad example.

      • Irish Sweetness

Oh, respect, and all of that, but if Charles Haley doesn’t get in with five rings ….

        • DaMurph

          Haley IS in the HOF.

    • willbest

LT and AP are the only two that have played in the last decade that are going in

    • willbest

If Forte is healthy he will pass lynch in rushing yards this year. Not to mention he is already ahead of lynch in yards from scrimmage and will be moving into the top 40 in that stat this year.

Oh and James has a hof shot. He finished in 2009.

    Hey MB –

Is Coachella a zoo – this pic is insane:

I’d like to take my son to see the Stones for Desert Trip but Jesus, I don’t know know if I’m ready for open class warfare like that

Oh man, kill me now. Way too many people for me.

      First, this: https://youtu.be/7tlxG1-aWtI

      Coulthard fucks him uuuuuup!

Secondly, fuck no. Total zoo. Wait till he’s 21+ maing. I don’t go near that shit

    • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd IpleadDa4rth! (ButchDeadLift)

      It’s a fucking hippy zoo!

I’ve been to it 2-3 times.

IF u do go, DEF stay in the camp grounds adjacent to the entrance.

Cuz as u can imagine, getting in and out of the parking lot will take u like 2 hours on its own.

Few drawbacks towards camping there though.

      1. Be prepared to hear bongo drums and techno till 4am

      2. Imagine all those ppl using portapotis

      3. General drunkenness, drugs and debauchery all around.

      4. Hippies!

Didn’t take Slauson long to find a new home.

    Surprised it took this long.

Probably because he had a LOT of offers to sift thru.

Releasing him STILL has me SMH.
