Meaningless Thoughts on a Meaningless Game One

| August 12th, 2016

In no particular order…

  • Amazing how noticeable Trevathan and Freeman were even in this context. Runs were going no further than 3-4 yards. Freeman was running sideline-to-sideline. Can’t wait to see these two in September.
  • Willie Young looks ready for the season to start.
  • With their improved run defense the Bears third down efficiency on that side will determine their season.
  • First pass to Langford? Bobbled. No alarms…yet.
  • I get the sense Cutler likes Mariani. He certainly trusts him on third down.
  • Trevor Siemian throws a nice football.
  • Deiondre’ Hall had to turn Ed Donatell’s head. Kid knows where the football is at all times.
  • Cody Whitehair getting looks at center was interesting. Bears shouldn’t waste time with this decision. (He didn’t look all that comfortable there.)
  • Why would anyone go to this game?

  • Cornelius Washington looked good.
  • John Timu too. I can’t imagine him not making this roster.
  • Brian Hoyer is going to be a terrific asset for this team. Bears have filled the McCown void.
  • Leonard Floyd sure likes that spin move.

Alright, it’s halftime. That’s enough.

An awful performance, which I’m glad I did not watch.

Not even close enough to attempt a field goal all game, evidently.

    • Huge Bear’s Penis

they are just using the rope-a-dope technique in the preseason, 16-0 here we come!!!

      • CanadaBear

        It’s working!

    • Scharfinator

      SOMEONE POISONED THE KOOLAID

    • Johnnywad

Its got to be difficult to look good in the first game with so many new pieces on the D and so many recent changes on the O line. I feel pretty good about where the D will end up this season.

      • SC Dave

I cannot really argue, as I did not watch it. But one can tell a bit about how things went by the box score, and that was ugly.

  • willbest

Glad Jeff agrees we have no depth at center.

Keep in mind Floyd played most of that game against tier 2/3 players.

Timu had a couple missed tackles to go with his good couple of other plays. I could see that going either way. CornWash too. Can’t stay healthy, don’t get a roster spot.

Defense just looked rusty. Offense looked directionless in addition to its lack of depth on the oline and tight end

  • Big Mike

What I learned… Pre-season doesn’t matter. Especially when you lose.
The defending Super Bowl Champions are further along at this point in their pre-season than a 6-10 team turning over their roster.

    • SC Dave

Despite preseason and Denver’s defense, I do find it distressing that we could not even muster a field goal attempt all game.

But the Bears were 1-3 in 1985 preseason.

      • Scharfinator

I’m with you. You have to imagine those 2/3 string guys want to show up well.

    • willbest

Ware, miller, Harris, and talib didn’t play. They lost Jackson and trevathan in FA. We didn’t play the super bowl winning defense

      • Big Mike

Stand by my comment. You’re looking at this like a regular season game. Training camp and preseason is about going through various phases of acclimation, evaluation, familiarization and installation of packages, plays etc. It’s a televised practice against another team. Broncos are the defending super bowl championship. They started camp in a figurative sense with a 2 week head start.

        • CanadaBear

I’m still trying to figure out why the donks were blitzing so much in a preseason game. That’s a nice way to get your own QB killed for no reason.

          • Johnnywad

Thought the same thing CBear. That was a bit stupid for pre season game 1. No way the Bears were thinking that shit was coming in August.

          • CanadaBear

I read a comment on an article that said Elway hates Fox and was trying to show him up. Sounds too petty to be true but Mister Ed is definitely a jagoff.

          • Johnnywad

            Very believable.

          • Huge Bear’s Penis

I believe it. Elway is a jackass.

          • SC Dave

Who knows, maybe they hate Cutler for some reason too.

Phelps won the 200m by 3 full seconds. 1.54 where everyone else was in the 1.57s.

3 seconds. In the Olympic Gold final.

That’s like winning the 400m hurdles by 3 seconds.

    • TBC

The 400m hurdles take less than a minute to complete. It would more be like winning the half mile by 3 seconds…

Blog bylaw 7a: if a blog member doesn’t view the actual pre-season or regular season game he shall fucking refrain from making stupid remarks during said game about players or plays not personally viewed.

    • CanadaBear

      Where’s the fun in that?

  • BearDown100393

“I don’t think you want to hit the panic button [following the 22-0 loss
to Denver]….but there’s a whole lot for us to get better on.” – #6

    That pretty much nails it.

  • You’re about to get Jericho’d

On that play where Callahan pulled a Conte and watched Thomas run right past him, Sanchez had to fall back and just chuck it up in the air because Trevathan and the boys were coming in hot and blasted him. That kind of pressure just didn’t happen last year and normally in the NFL that’s an easy pick.

D speed very noticeable from 1st team
Deiondre Hall is NOT aware of the ball at all times Jeff as the TD that was broken up had him not turning his head and the WR dropping it. I think he will improve though and had a decent initial showing.
Our O was not ready for the constant blitzing but Loggains showed later on that he actually does know what a short crossing pattern is. He just waited 4 series to do it.
    Massie underwhelmed
Miller and Royal will be welcomed back with open arms.
    Bellamy makes the roster again
    Braverman does not
CornWash looked decent at his new position throughout the entire game….then got hurt.
Carey proved why he needs to be on the team….then got hurt.
Alshon and White got through the game without injury which is all that matters.
Willie Young will have a great year.

    More to come.

    • Scharfinator

      Callagone?

      • You’re about to get Jericho’d

ha, naw, we need him. He saw the blitz and expected Thomas to cut off his route I’d imagine. He did not, Callahan stopped in coverage and Sanchez just threw it up. Trevathan got home a couple times last night. Freeman got beat in coverage on a 3rd and 8 but looked way way way better than our previous LB’s. Goldman got pushed around a bit in the run game but it was way too small a sample size to be concerned.
I’m a little sad for CornWash. He played well against 1st through 4th stringers. He’s a huge dude but we’ll see how bad his leg injury is.

    • Huge Bear’s Penis

O ye of little faith for Braverman. Braverman shall rise up and rebuke the words of trepidation from fans like the, and thou shall bask in his glory.

    • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd ArbyManager#83 (ButchDeadLift)

I think part of the debacle was different objectives.

Fox was testing out the new personnel. He was purposely leaving the CBs out alone to see who can actually cover. If they got burned, so be it. It doesn’t count.

Think he was doing the same with Olinemen.

The donks, for whatever reason, were playing as if they were still in the playoffs or something.

The Bears in the real season last year almost beat the SB version Donks, and one can argue we are better and they are worse this season.

A lot of the crap will get cleaned up when it counts. Fangio is actually somewhat conservative, so doubt we’ll see a nickle ever covering Damyrius Thomas when it matters.

      • willbest

Ware missed that game, although so did Jeffery. But they did play their better QB.

      • You’re about to get Jericho’d

That’s the thing though, the pressure was there, Callahan just watched him fucking run by. The Bears WILL get pressure on the QB this year. Just have to get off of the field on those first 3rd down opportunities. Can’t let the crossing route get you every time.

        • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd ArbyManager#83 (ButchDeadLift)

What concerns me is that the Donks were attacking the middle, like every team attacked us last year, successfully.

That’s supposed to be our strength, but maybe we’re like the French and the Mariani trench – it’s an illusion.

They began gashing us inside, then began their bootleg and PA attack, and the D looked on its heels.

That crossing route in front of Freeman for 8 yds and a 1st concerns me. He was brought in to stop that shit. That being said, Freeman looked omnipresent and made a play when it was there to be had, which we could never say about the LBs last year.

          • MB30SD

I’m willing to wait till after at least PS game #2 before calling them dogshit. : )

  • Blackhawks63

Objective unvarnished analysis suggests that the talent level on this roster is not yet where it needs to be. I love Ryan Pace, John Fox and this coaching staff, but there is more work to be done in drafting and developing core and complementary pieces. Dowell Loggans is unfairly going to get skewered this season, but I think its going to be real tough for this team on offense. The offensive line is a scary mess. Losing Grasu was a big blow, because he was a young developmental piece. I like Whitehair…he will be fine. I think we all know that Leno and Massie are far from certainties. How this offensive line keeps Cutler upright this season will be THE storyline to follow. We also have a hot mess at tight end. At running back, we have some complementary pieces which is the model that Fox likes to go with. But it’s a very young and raw group, and until we see how it comes together there is lots to be worried about at running back. Hopefully the Braverman experiment ends quickly…he’s a distraction and a novelty act…and NOT an NFL caliber wide receiver. On defense, the major worry is of course at cornerback.

My head says 6 wins, 10 losses in 2016. With much brighter days to come in a year or two.

    • GP portrayed by Eric Roberts

Based on last night, 6-10 or 5-11.

But I think Pace will make a series of moves to fix OL woes in the weeks to come.

      • CanadaBear

Hope you’re right (about fixing the OL)!

    • Johnnywad

      No shit? I’m shocked.

    • Huge Bear’s Penis

How dare you speak ill of the future HOFer Braverman like that!!! I curse you for your blasphemy and may pox rain down upon you and your family!

    • willbest

Buddy, if they aren’t competing for the SB next year, Pace should be fired. You don’t get 4 years in the NFL. In 2 years Cutler will be 35 and they may need a new starting QB. Sure QB’s last longer but Cutler Is only 18 sacks away from reaching Peyton Manning’s total. And those concussions are going to start adding up at some point.

Some good stuff in there. Timu on the blitz is nice. Specials look good.

    • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd ArbyManager#83 (ButchDeadLift)

If Timu can learn to cover, he’d be a starter somewhere.
And if my uncle had tits…

  • Bears-4-Ever

Way to early to make predictions here. We can use the first quarter as a semi-test on things to come but the changes from now to the reg. season will be extensive. I thought the D looked improved save for a few gaffs. I’m confident we’ll have a good D with a way better pass rush than last year. Yeah CB is a big question but hopefully we can shore things up. The offense was a hot mess, mostly the O-line was the key to the problems. O-line is the number one concern and the number one priority at this point. Shore it up and everything can get better. The most concern I have at this point is our Center who needs to anchor the middle. Still, last night cannot be any indication on how the Bears will do this year. We have to wait and see how it goes on opening day. Anything before is pure crystal-ball speculations.

    • Irish Sweetness

Looks like we don’t know who our center is. We don’t really have a solid proven left guard. RT probably isn’t worth a shit. Left tackle is probably average, and we have no swing tackle to go in and do it if either goes down. Another year of drafting and FA should do it. They might gel later on and surprise us.

      • CanadaBear

You just know that with the Bears luck the OL will be riddled with injuries this year. It never fails. Wherever the Beloved can least afford an injury is where they most likely will incur the most.

        • Bears-4-Ever

Is Olin Kreutz still in shape? He’d be a cheap pick up. 🙂

Seriously though, it’s my biggest concern, perhaps we’ll need one more draft to really get it together, That would mean this season is a wash…not cool. I don’t want to go there this early, I still think were a .500 team until proven otherwise. Crossing my fingers for an O-line Gel to give Cutty a few more seconds…

          • willbest

How many rookie centers find success when they aren’t snapping the ball to Aaron Rodgers or Tom Brady?

      • willbest

Its worse than not knowing who our center is now, we are going to go into 2017 not knowing who our Center is. Grasu might never come back from the knee blowout.

        • MB30SD

he should never come back. Just cut his ass now and move on. thanks for the mammories.

  • 505Bears

Well, that was a waste of a 12 pack. Ugh!!!

    • CanadaBear

How ya feeling? I quit drinking 22+ years ago for obvious reasons. Pretty sure a twelver would kill me now!

      • 505Bears

I’m just a bit tired. Didn’t kill the entire 12, but that game had me downing pretty hard. Only 1st preseason game, right?!

        • CanadaBear

Practice, practice, practice. I didn’t see the game but I followed it for a few minutes in the beginning. Lots of work to do.

          • 505Bears

You were better off. Not many positives to talk about. I’m just happy Cutler didn’t blow out a knee on any of the sacks. Not sure why he was passing at all?! Just hand it off every damn time and move on to the next game.

  • willbest

So after last night, I still think the Bears are looking at 10 wins. They don’t have the roughest schedule, but if I had to guess, I think we are going to watch the season unfold similar to 2012 when it was Cutler, Forte and Marshall doing just enough to win the games the defense kept the opponents under 20 points.

    • MB30SD

I think this is a fair an balanced assessment. Although I do think you’re not giving enough credit to the D. I think we’ll win some games with those boys once it all comes together.

That play from buttfumble to thomas was pure luck on the throw end, and pure rust on the callahan end. just stoopid… that won’t happen during the year.

  • GP portrayed by Eric Roberts

In China, radio gear that you can use to forge GPS coordinates is insanely in demand. Why? What use is there sending your phone fake GPS coordinates?

So you can warp around the planet and take over all the Pokemon Gyms. Of course. So now most of the best Gyms in a country are being cyber squatted by insane Chinese hackers.

No doubt there are dubious Chinese sites where you can pay $12 for access to whatever is in that Gym similar to the way you can buy virtual currency and loot for all sorts of games. In point of fact, it would have been easy for Blizzard to nail anybody for buying in game currency with real money in World of Warcraft, but they were getting $15+ million a month from Chinese gold farmers. For Diablo 3 they just said F it and created a real money auction house during the period of time the casual players played the game. Took it down so the die hards could enjoy the purity of the endless grind.

    3. Alshon did NOT look hurt. Dragging 4 tacklers a few yds
    4. Already had more INTs in one qrt than all last year
    5. Freeman made a very heads up INT
    6. Hall needs to turn his head, but he held his own in the endzone back to back
    7. Howard looks like a load. Hard to tell with Oline, but looks the part
    8. Carey was scrapping it out. Run here. Deflection catch there. SP team wipe out.

Floyd loved him some spin move. I was having a Shae flashback. But he was much quicker and had arm leverage and game that Shae never had. He was getting pressure.

      • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd ArbyManager#83 (ButchDeadLift)

You can tell Floyd is just more explosive than Shea. Longer too like you said.

But same result. A lil pressure. Never actual sacks.

I’m just trying to think of a player precedent for Floyd, and I can’t. Closest I can think of is Jason Taylor (who was 6’2, not 6’6).

He’s not the undersized explosive rusher with unreal bend like Von Miller.
He’s not cornbred pro-typical DE with violent hands like Watt.

He’s, like Shae, a tweener, we HOPE can become one of those, or some sorta new hybrid.

Hate to say it, but I just don’t see it. But, we’ll see.

(Also, this isn’t solely based on 1 PS game)

He will also challenge the footwork of most LTs. I think he has another gear to his game.

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd ArbyManager#83 (ButchDeadLift)

I hope so. He’s gonna need it cuz it looks like once a linemen gets his paws on Floyd, game over.

The OTs in the NFL have a much quicker sidestep, so he won’t be able to just loop around and do that spin move. Floyd’s gotta develop an effective counter, something Shea could never do.

      • You’re about to get Jericho’d

that was like the black Nick Reed.

NFL charging more $ for suckier product.

      Color me shocked.

      • SC Dave

Still, $99 ain’t shit. A ‘date’ meal for two at a decent restaurant, on special.

        • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd ArbyManager#83 (ButchDeadLift)

I go by lapdances as a monetary unit.

          So that’s about 4 lapdances
Or 2 and a drink in the less skankier ones.

          • Dale701

You need to come to kokomo, In, to the Hip Hugger, that would be 10 dances.

        • AlbertInTucson

That’s almost 4 trips to Cracker barrel with the wife.

          • CanadaBear

Do they still have those pecan pancakes? I haven’t been to a Cracker Barrel in about 15 years but I loved those pancakes. I could get those in the AM, get on the road and drive all day. No need for another meal until you call it quits in the evening.

          • AlbertInTucson

I THINK they do. I’ll check next trip.

We have only one in the area bout 10 minutes away. We’re there 2-3 times a week.

Love the food and the friendliest bunch of servers in town.

        • MB30SD

Tell me about it dave. I tend to do a drink first at a rooftop, sea view bar ($30). If I like the girl, I ask her to dinner… sushi at one of my favorite places. They know me, I bring them a lot of biz…. ~$130 w tip.

          Spensive man.

          • SC Dave

No shit. So certainly we agree the $99 don’t matter much in the big game.

When I go to the sports bar, and over the season spend 2 or 3 times the $99 (if I eat before I go, else way more), at least I get to scream with other Bears fans what an asshole Joe Buck is.

            And that’s worth it, right?

            Right?

          • MB30SD

Hell yes. I tend to find that if the girl wants to go to dinner with me, in that scenario, my 1st night close rate is very high… so yeah, not bad. That and I get to have my favorite food, at one of my favorite places, with a pretty young thing that I can tell is waiting to be taken home. That drive back to my place always makes me laugh a little, like… man, I love this job.

    • willbest

I don’t know getting the all-22 could be interesting. Is the interface any good for replay?

      • AlbertInTucson

        Couldn’t say.

I did enjoy calling up the radio play-by-play of any game and team broadcasters throughout the week and hearing the call when it was a stand-alone product.

I know the NFL Network caught a lot of grief from fans of the radio package and that’s why they’ve revived it this seaso abeit, as a carrot to sell GAME PASS.

I don’t think I’m interested enough to pony up $99 for it.

Maybe when they drop the price into the season. The Games will be archived so I could go back and listen for less.

      Hey Al,

I cut the cord years ago. Many years ago. I have a unlimited Uverse VDSL for $81/mo.

I am looking at adding Sling to my credit card. $40/mo. ESPN+HBO and 48 channels, including all local affiliates, CNN/TNT/TBS.

You can freeze frame, but you can’t use it like a DVR on the good channels. You can on some channels:
      http://help.sling.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/Does-Sling-TV-have-a-Replay-option-available-46

I won’t miss games and can chuck my digital antenna, which is a pain in the ass since new televisions do not come with digital tuners anymore. Not sure, but thinking about it.

  • GP portrayed by Eric Roberts

So my real name is Irish. It’s not Shamus McFlanigan but it’s Irish.

So I see this Irishman who has my name and he has myname.com and he is a record producer in Ireland. And he made a pretty cool logo of our shared name. So I email him and ask “hey could I use that logo just for personal use, not for business.” It’s a nice email, I introduce myself and such.

    Email back: “fuck no”

    How shall I reply? I’ve started the email back as such;

    “Shamus, you stupid mick cunt”

Now I need to take it somewhere

    • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd ArbyManager#83 (ButchDeadLift)

send his email to the Nigerian prince on here so he can make 87$ an hour!

    • MB30SD

I think that’s the perfect email. Full stop.

    • beninnorcal

      Just use the logo anyway.

      • willbest

That would have been my advice before he went and shit up the whole thing by asking permission. Now if he does it, its willful.

    • SC Dave

‘Potato eating bastard! I should mash your pansy drunk ass.’

‘Oh, for GOD’S fucking sake, drink something REAL, instead of that 4.3% black-from-cockroach-shit Guiness that you try to pass onto the ignorant masses of the world as BEER!’

‘And stop violating MY nostril-space with all that fucking cabbage-fueled methane!’

    • CanadaBear

I always thought starting out with “Dearest Douchebag” had a nice ring to it.

  • Irish Sweetness

    Football’s back.

Packers look strong. Good depth, and a couple of QBS they can call on that aren’t useless. Detroit looked good.

Josh McCown was money for the Browns. Morsett might be a future fantasy star for them at RB.

Raiders look good. Giants offense looks deadly, Shephard had a studly catch on the sideline.

  • CanadaBear

Just read that besides CD and the Black Uni, the Pats also have Brock Vereen. If BB can turn CD and Vereen into serviceable players, he truly is the best of all time.

  • Huge Bear’s Penis
    • You’re about to get Jericho’d

Williams had a really tough game. Almost got Hoyer killed.

      • Huge Bear’s Penis

hopefully the guys we signed will be better at least as backups, unfortunately I don’t see it. Holmes was part of that awful line that got all of Indy’s QBs killed last year.

    • AlbertInTucson

Smells just a bit desperate, no?

      • Huge Bear’s Penis

absolutely, but it is still refreshing. We have a GM that is willing to make moves and try to fix things, instead of trotting coaches out to give bullshit statements about players, like “We have all the confidence in Webb”

    • EnderWiggin

I’m going to bitch about the Slauson decision until Pace and Slauson are out of the league.

      • Huge Bear’s Penis

I will do my best not to complain about your bitching. he is gone. move on.

        • EnderWiggin

Oh, I’ve moved on. Moved on from one of the most mind-bottling moves of the off-season.
Can I move on and bring it up while moving on?

          • Huge Bear’s Penis

sure you can, I was stating I will try not to complain about the people whining about it.

          • MB30SD

It was mind-bottling to me too.

      • You’re about to get Jericho’d

        Haha

      • Irish Sweetness

        I’m in that dinghy too.

Watching the Titans run all over the Chargers here. 180 yards in the first half. 4 studs in the RB room. They can run all over you … and Mariota’s not even on the field. Thundercats indeed.

Pace felt Whitehair was a bigger piece than Derrick Henry. The dude looks like ED 209 alone in that backfield, but then he’s got jinks and jukes with a spin-move?
Whatever about the first pick, we sure screwed up the second.

      • Joecashflow

How about until we win 10.

        • CanadaBear

          Whichever comes first!

  • Shonbear

It may be meaningless, but to be the only team of 32 teams that didn’t only not score but allowed a safety is disconcerting…

    • Huge Bear’s Penis

not all 32 teams have played yet….

    • MB30SD

      Shon!

    • Joecashflow

Cleveland allowed 2 safeties against GB and GB allowed one. Yeah the donut is disconcerting. Not even in FG range. Also, the problem of RB’s not breaking tackles. That combined with unsettled OL, is disconcerting.

    • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd ArbyManager#83 (ButchDeadLift)

Don’t forget the blocked punt , 7 sacks, and horrible punts!

  • You’re about to get Jericho’d

I can’t believe i’m saying this but CornWash, aka The Octopus, aka The Spaz, actually looked good throughout the entire game against 1st through 4th stringers and reports of possible major injury may be exaggerated:
    #Bears
DE Cornelius Washington did not practice today because of ankle and
knee injuries. He was carted off Thurs, but no boot on today. – Adam Jahns

No boot is a GOOD sign! I want to see if he can do that again in either the 2nd or 3rd preseason game. If he can the newly designed 290lb DE could make this team. Still can’t believe i’m writing this.

    • CanadaBear

I told ya! I hope he can get back on the field and stay there.

    • Blackhawks63

If Washington makes this roster its damning indictment that our depth sucks and we still have a big talent void. The same goes for the novelty act on the other side of the football in Braverman.

      • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd ArbyManager#83 (ButchDeadLift)

Not even close to being the same. Cornwash probably runs a faster 40 than Braverman at 290 and his metrics are elite. Just could never stay healthy

        • EnderWiggin
          • CanadaBear

I think #2 on the list did most of his tackling 6-8 yds down the field!

          • MB30SD

            Holy fucking shit!!!

          • EnderWiggin

Yeah, weird. I guess tackling efficiency means: if you put your hands on a guy and he doesn’t get away. So, for what its worth…

      • Huge Bear’s Penis

        anti Semite!

      • MB30SD

        Seriously, go away eyeor

      • Johnnywad

You should change your screen name to “Talent”. Every post can just then be a minus sign, like this “-“, then you don’t have to repeat the exact same post every single time you show up. Saves you time, saves us reading your bullshit.

        • Huge Bear’s Penis

what a novel idea! are you sure that would not be to much of a novelty act for him?

          • Johnnywad

            Doubt the talent is there.

    • beninnorcal

I hope he can stay healthy when he gets back.

  • MB30SD
    • CanadaBear

      • CanadaBear

Esp the part about carrying over from the off season.

  • Irish Sweetness

Bad or good as we are, we’re going to rip Houston a new one in week one.

    • willbest

Watt not playing? DeAndre Hopkins doesn’t care who is throwing the ball, we are going to need Porter and polish lightening double teaming him.

  • Irish Sweetness

Kyle Fuller’s knee has been injured since last season and he’s still being held out of practice, according to John Fox.

    • willbest

I am shocked, SHOCKED, that a Bears first round draft pick isn’t living up to expectations.

  • Irish Sweetness
  • willbest

Sac, I have been seeing some preliminary tweets from the Soros email hack, and your deep fear that it really is him just manipulating everything looks like it might have some merit after all.
