I Have Nothing of Note to Say About the Chicago Bears…

| May 16th, 2016

…so here are some thoughts of non-note.

  • Can people stop writing about Leonard Floyd’s weight? Who gives a shit about Leonard Floyd’s weight? He weighs what he weighs. I’ll start being interested in Floyd when he starts playing football.
  • I like how John Fox answers questions from media. When they asked him about Adam Gase’s new approach to rookie minicamp he basically said, “Yea whatever. We do our thing.” Fox doesn’t overthink football.
  • Dowell Loggains said Jeremy Langford needs to improve in the passing game. This is a fancy way of saying Langford needs to stop dropping the ball in pivotal moments or he’s gonna be off the field in pivotal moments.
  • Bears can say anything they want but Soldier Field’s surface is never going to improve. It’s been awful for more than a decade.
  • I can’t remember a Bears training camp that will have this much intrigue. The one hallmark of Ryan Pace thus far is he’s not afraid of roster turnover.

finally a deep camp with survival of the fittest

  • Swing Tackle of Destiny

The one hallmark of Ryan Pace thus far is he’s not afraid of roster turnover.

The key element of a training camp is to remove incumbency and force players to earn roster spots every year. You kill the complacent veteran syndrome (See: Briggs, Lance) and you kill the sense of privledge that makes teams soft.

    • Born_a_Bear1981

Agreed, no softies going forward. Stay-healthy hungry youngsters. New to post on the blog, i read u all alot…i will throw my 2¢ in once and a while. Thx for having me, 3rd generation bears fan. The hope actually feels tangible with the new regime.

      • The Yes Guy

        YES

      • Doc Nitty

        I don’t trust anyone born in 1981.

  • Scharfinator

“Bears can say anything they want but Soldier Field’s surface is never going to improve. It’s been awful for more than a decade.”

    Sad but 100% true.

    • CanadaBear

That’s not completely true. It’s been bad forever. The original field sucked, the fake grass field REALLY sucked and now the re-sodded field is always in transition.

  • Bender McLugh

I loathe to link to a 4-letter article, but this pic for the article is traumatic…….and the caption even says it’s from Friday. Oy.

    http://espn.go.com/blog/chicago-bears/post/_/id/4702765/rookie-camp-observations-leonard-floyds-weight-jonathan-bullards-role

    • Bender McLugh

aaaand they changed it. It was Tresticle and the caption said “Bears head coach overlooks the team during blah blah on Friday.”

      • CanadaBear

By the time I read the article the pic had been changed. I’m certainly not a fan of ESPN but the biggest issue for me is Dickerson. If you take away his ability to question Floyd’s weight/draft status and the veiled shots at Cutler in EVERY article that mentions Cutler, his output would be about 200 words/week.

        • Bender McLugh

          agreed completely.

        • Captain Obvious

Dickerson wasn’t bad when he covered the NFC North. He tended to be a bit soft on Detroit (he’s a self-admitted Detroit guy), but he seemed pretty fair with the other teams.

          • CanadaBear

I really dislike his work now. He seems to be in the Rosendouche/haugh mode.

  • Cutty Badger

I’m out. Other sites are actually discussing the guys that are fighting for spots on the roster. The Tight End position is very important and a bunch of guys are trying to snatch up the 2nd spot. There are things to talk about besides “Floyd’s weight”.
    It’s getting stale….

      Sugarpie honeybunch
You know that I love you
      I can’t help myself
I love you and nobody else

I have MoTown on Pandora in the car on the way to work. These responses still come through on my phone so I had to respond. Kind of my point. You’ll make me laugh (even though most of the time it’s you subtly fucking with me) and off of this post Canada will conduct a poll on everyone’s favorite MoTown bands….Cormonster will recall a time he went to a concert with members of the Four Tops little brothers and Sac will rail at the exploitation of the black man by white producers in the music industry…Irish will throw out there that black female singers of the late 50’s early 60’s were the hottest pieces of ass….MB will dispute that because none of them had huge awesome fake boobs…..some of the time it’s the only reason i log in…

The other sites don’t have the same kind of banter between the members but those sites actually try to provide discussion thread material once in a while.

Jeff has no interest in anything beyond the season. I understand it but it doesn’t really jive with the whole concept of the football team, how it’s built, the monumental rebuild, etc.

          Hey Now!

          • Cutty Badger

            in a good way

          • CanadaBear

I totally get where you’re coming from. That last thread just ran out of steam and limp dicked to the finish line. I’m the editor of the newsletter of the Blues Club here on the Island. I could post that. I’m sure everyone would find that riveting!

          • EnderWiggin

            Sure! Where is the link!?

          • CanadaBear

Here it is! The videos are the best part (by far). Lonnie Mack (just died), Rick Estrin (hilarious song) and Jack Semple doing Little Wing are the best.

For some reason I was thinking you were on the eastern seaboard. Well it’s not the blues but it is the baby of the blues. If you haven’t checked out DJ Finewine you should. Some great musical finds when he digs deep in the crates. http://wfmu.org/playlists/SV

          • CanadaBear

I love all kinds of music. Mostly Blues and Roots. As long as I can feel some kind of passion in the music, I’m in.

Don’t know if you saw the reply the other day. We saw him last fall in a small theater (cap 800). Very entertaining besides being super talented. He lives on one of the smaller islands out here.

          • EnderWiggin

Gibson Flying V with serial # 7… I’d pay just to look at that.
            Cool site man!
Oh, and I liked it on FB.

          • CanadaBear

Thanks. Funny follow up. When Gibson found out he was touring with that guitar they freaked out and gave him the new one. I have no idea what that guitar is worth but easily 6 figures. Lonnie was a great guy and a hillbilly. Our VP of the club at the time (late ’80’s in Iowa) ran into Lonnie at about 3 AM at the vending machine in the hotel. He was in his tighty whiteys with a bottle of Jameson in his hand. Gotta love that. Here’s a funny song by him. I think you’ll recognize the other guy.

        • Swing Tackle of Destiny

Jeff is a personality driven writer, which – given he is a playwright – one would expect. He’s not really into mechanics and team structure – taking about cap management, etc. He’d rather post an article blowing Cliff Stein than analyse what Stein has done or how the cap is actually being structured for the Bears. It’s all about the people with him. And when there is nobody acting out, there isn’t much to write about for him.

I’d still rather wait for things to pick up then go hang out with the Bears Goggle crowd. That’s a gaggle of Score callers over there.

Here’s Donald Trump tweeting about this:

“Waffle has chosen to defect to another blog. he will embed himself with weak sauce posters and secret Rodgers lovers. Sad! #Trump2016”

          • Cutty Badger

haha, i can’t get that anywhere else. When Trump calls you out then throws in his own hashtag about the campaign you have to step up. I think i was just pissed at his bullshit title, “Guys, i don’t give a fuck…discuss”

Kid starts 10 games, loses all 10. 75 QB rating. But he was on a shit shit Titans team. Now he’s out there floating, a UFA.

Take a flyer on the kid, or is he a true bust?

    • Captain Obvious

      Convicted rapist. Pass.

      • Swing Tackle of Destiny

        Wait, what?

        • Captain Obvious

He did a plea bargain so was “only” convicted of 2 counts of sexual battery.

Everything indicated he was guilty of worse.

          http://espn.go.com/college-football/news/story?id=5159601

He’s a radioactive pile of shit.

          • CanadaBear

Not that I disagree with you but the article said he grabbed the woman’s boobs and butt in some club. That’s not exactly rape. No doubt the guy was a jackass.

          • Huge Bear’s Penis

shit if that’s all he did, I am pretty sure I would be sent to the chair for something I did during my drunk ass weekend.

          • Cutty Badger

“…….Mettenberger also was ordered to pay $2,000 in fines and perform 40 hours of community service, was banished from the city of Valdosta and is to have no contact with the victim.”
Haha, anytime you are BANISHED from a CITY you’ve done some serious battering and groping.

          • Sactowns#1

I doubt they could enforce than banishment but it does have cache.

          • MikeBrownhadaPosse

And all before his 21st birthday!
            Zach is an overachiever.

Isn’t Trump banished from all of the United Kingdom?

          • MikeBrownhadaPosse

Taking bets on whether he could find it on a map of Europe.

          • Irish Sweetness

He probably thinks Europe is IN the United Kingdom.

          • Huge Bear’s Penis

Its not that hard to get BANISHED from a City. There’s one small town I was told not to come back by the Mayor. You get drunk ONE TIME and moon some old people then drive through a dozen front yards clipping mailboxes.

          • AlbertInTucson

Meh. There’s a guy in Louisiana doing 18 YEARS for two marijuana joints.

          • Irish Sweetness

            Land of the free.

          • Captain Obvious

I can’t find the article now–maybe enough time has passed that it’s an internet ghost now–but the original charge was that he stuck his hand in her pants and put his fingers in the girl. Because a medical exam given to the victim was inconclusive and it was just her word versus his, but there were witnesses that would back her up that he grabbed her inappropriately, the charges were pled (pleaded?) down. The article I remember said that’s why he got zapped on two charges of sexual battery–one for each orifice he violated.

          • CanadaBear

Yikes! I’ll never understand that shit. The guy could obviously get laid without working real hard at it, why be such a fucking pig?

          • Irish Sweetness

Drugs/alcohol. Probably doesn’t even remember it.

          • Scharfinator

College athletes are used to getting whatever they want. Especially if they have to take it.

          • Cutty Badger

damn, that’s pretty bad. Women have pretty much been under attack since the dawn of time.
We use such murky and vague words and it desensitizes us to what’s really happening. Groping and Sexual Battery could be pretty horrible violations it turns out.

    • Huge Bear’s Penis

didn’t he really fuck up his shoulder his rookie year?

      • MikeBrownhadaPosse

        Yes

      • Cutty Badger

yes, when he batters and gropes he really goes all out. Like winners do.

    • willbest

We have Jay locked up for the next 5 years, and Brian Hoyer as his backup. I don’t know what purpose that would serve even if he weren’t a complete bust.

      • Cutty Badger

I think Hoyer is a one year deal. Gropenberger would be a young backup that you could theoretically groom to win you some games should Jay go down.
The insane quality of the NFL groupies in downtown Chicago would result in young Zach just going apeshit and trying to batter and grope every hot young victim that walked by at Paris Club. I just can’t see it working.

        • willbest

The signing of Hoyer for 1 year is actually a tell that Pace intends to be in the market for Jay’s heir next year. Otherwise he would have signed him to a 2 year deal. So unless you think Gropie is the guy it makes no sense for him to be on the roster.

          • Cutty Badger

hmmm, Jay playing well and the Bears going for QB when CB, S, OL, TE and Edge are all still very important needs/holes to fill? Nope, still another year of building away I’d think. You can just grab vets on 1yr deals for cheap and it’s much safer than throwing a college kid to the wolves. That’s why I always laughed at the notion that you’d bring in a Fales, Blanchard, LeFevour when you could have a Hoyer as your backup…and you can duplicate the same concept every single year.

          • willbest

I thought playing Fales was the right move because
            1) Pickles wasn’t going to win that game, so despite Seattle being tough as hell, there would have been no expectation to win
            2) You have to put your big boy pants on some time
            3) if he does even okay (180, 1 TD, 1 INT), you are going to get a draft pick for him

I also would feel that way about some of the games on our schedule this year. Lions at Soldier Field, stick Hoyer out there. In Dallas if that offense is as beastly as it looks on paper when the Bears get there in week 4 and Jay is concussed, put Fales in there.

    • As a QB prospect, I liked him.
But don’t know about all that other off-field stuff.

From what I hear about him, he’s a bit arrogant.
But hey, Rapelisburger did things in restrooms too and now has a few rings.

As long as Mettenberger is not a rapist, I’d take a flyer on him.

This might seem politically incorrect, but groping goes on at clubs all the time.

But Mett would have to compete and beat out Fales.

    • Irish Sweetness

      No room at the inn.

  • MikeBrownhadaPosse

    Any interest in Brandon Boykin?

    • EnderWiggin

He’s probably mid 20s. Cornerback depth could be an issue. But the Steelers and Panthers both threw him to the curb, even though he was promising once…

      • MikeBrownhadaPosse

Yeah, it’s been strange – he showed flashes with the Steelers, and he hasn’t had time to piss off the Panthers yet. Makes you wonder what’s going on behind the scenes.

        • EnderWiggin

I’d say he is worth a shot. At least for the next few months.

          • Huge Bear’s Penis

Porter bounced around for a few years also. bring him in and give him a shot.

          • EnderWiggin

Yeah man, anytime a one-year contract guy earns a small extension – jackpot(ish)!

          • MikeBrownhadaPosse

            I endorse this viewpoint.

  • Sactowns#1

How about an in depth article on what an impact player Mitch Unrein will be this year. Irish?

    • Huge Bear’s Penis

Jeff or AD should reach out to some of the Practice Squad Heroes! and do some interviews, even if it is just email type and not phone interviews.

      • MikeBrownhadaPosse

        YES.

      • willbest

This seems like it should be reasonably doable. Doesn’t the NFL require all players to be available to the media? I can’t imagine there is a lot of competition to talk to the PSH which should leave a blogger with a modest following in a position to get some time.

        • MikeBrownhadaPosse

One would think so, I just don’t know that Jeff would be all that into it. I think it would be fun to run down the contacts and get some interviews set up.

          • Huge Bear’s Penis

90 players on the roster, bottom 1/2 – 2/3 not 100% sure they make the team. My guess a few would respond. Could be some really good insight.

          • That was my logic when I pitched the idea a few threads back.

This blog loves the Joe Andersons of camp.

Would be a win/win. Fill in the lull, and satisfy the mob.

        • Sactowns#1

Players don’t have to be open to the media until camp starts. And the only requirement is that they participate in in person interviews along with a conference call with the opposing cities media. Seeing as Jeff isn’t in Chi it doesn’t sound very doable. Now, if one of you would like to volunteer as beat writer then …. http://www.profootballwriters.org/nfl-media-access-policy/

    http://abcnews.go.com/Business/nfls-atlanta-falcons-making-stadium-food-affordable/story?id=39121569

Their concession prices will be better than the ones at my local minor league baseball stadium (which are admittedly pretty f-cking stupidly high).

    • willbest

That seems surprisingly benevolent. Is there stadium capacity increasing and they are worried about filling the new stadium? Or are ticket prices going up with a hidden “food charge” already baked into the ticket. I went to a game at Ford Field probably 6-7 years ago and the ticket came with unlimited non-alcoholic concessions.

I rather like Wrigley’s policy of just letting your bring in food, and effectively just charging you for drinks (though you can bring in sealed bottled water too). Though I find a lot of places have the peanut allergy loophole and I use that to sneak in a couple extra snacks for the kids.

      • MikeBrownhadaPosse

I was wondering the same thing about ticket prices. If nothing else, I would expect a big boost in sales because of the perception that a $5 cup of Budweiser is a ‘bargain’.

        • Huge Bear’s Penis

what stadium are you only paying $5 for a beer?

          • MikeBrownhadaPosse

    • willbest

Well it wouldn’t be much of a practice field if it wasn’t in the same shitty condition that Soldier Field is in.

      • Huge Bear’s Penis

I bet even their indoor facility has problems to more closely mimic Soldier Field, my guess is exposed seams in the turf, banana peels, and random shards of metal.

    • Cutty Badger

I actually like Gaston, got him from the Pack. Thought he showed promise. Obviously not enough…..
The dream is still alive though. Until you see TFW on the chopping block he’s still a fucking Bear.

    • That Guy

The only way I can keep track of these bubble guys is when I start to look at what spots are actually open. For example, we’ve got Long and Whitehair locked up at the guard positions. Massey and Leno at tackle. Grasu at center. None of those guys is getting cut. So then how many other players are locks on the roster? How many spots does that leave? How many guys are fighting for those 1-3 spots?

      • Shady

Biggs was on the radio this morning talking about how Whitehair was staying late after practice taking reps at C.

        • That Guy

That’s interesting to hear, but I still don’t see Grasu getting cut after one season.

          • I still don’t see why Grasu can’t crack LG.

They usually work in tandem with C, and since he’s weak, the training wheels should help.

      • willbest

I counted 31 guys that are going to make the team for sure. So there are 22 spots that are up for grabs.

        • CanadaBear

I started counting but at some point I wasn’t sure about a lot of these guys. Unlike the previous regimes, if guys aren’t producing they are gonna get launched. What a refreshing thought that is!

    • Irish Sweetness

I don’t know those guys. I’m pulling for Tayo, the midget Braverman …. Falesy.

  • AlbertInTucson

    Dodged the Shaq Lawson bullet.

    • Swing Tackle of Destiny

      agreed

      • AlbertInTucson

He was the Bears choice in a helluva lot of mock drafts.

Could the the Bears have known about the Lawson shoulder issue and THAT’S why they moved up…?

        • Seems like it. Though I heard the Bears would’ve drafted Rankins if they stayed put and not Lawson (possibly cuz of that shoulder).

Needless to say, it feels refreshing to finally luck out a bit on the medical red flags.

God knows we had too many 1st rounders derailed by inj.

        • CanadaBear

I think teams knew about it but there were questions about whether he would need surgery right away or later down the road.

She was wandering around Evanston. No joke.

      • Captain Obvious

I got lost in Evanston once. I was drunk and looking for this Navy girl who was stationed at Great Lakes.

Ended up eating at some local pizza joint. The regulars took pity on me (I was in uniform) and put me in a cab.

        Ahh, the 90s were fun.

Wanted a Navy Girl or something like that

    • CanadaBear

Why so much hate for her? She’s definitely got some issues. Just because she’s rich is no reason to hate on her. I’m not a fan and wouldn’t recognize even one of her songs.

This may have been mentioned last thread. Pats and Bears are practicing twice together before their August 18 preseason game.

Okay, here is my proposal for a new developmental league.

You make a 16 team “developmental” league. Each developmental team is run by one NFC and one AFC team, with the managers rotating every year to ensure “neutral” partners (unless both teams make the Superbowl). The schedule is highly predictable, so there’s probably a good way to ensure that each team’s partner won’t play them for the next season or two.

Each team normally has a 53 man roster which balloons to 90 men this time of year. We change that rule. Each team now gets a 65 man “exclusive” roster. The draft has only four rounds and takes place a month earlier.

In addition, each developmental team has a 54 man roster (so there are an additional 64 players league-wide than now). Each team puts 27 players on the developmental team. It would be interesting if there was some kind of system that made UDFAs free to sign with either of the managing teams. But veterans are also eligible to make the league.

The developmental league has a six game season. No player may be on the field for more than three quarters. And the winning team’s two “parent” teams are rewarded for a win with an extra roster spot during the preseason. (So an undefeated team could have six more roster spots than a winless team).

Post-season, we have rounds 5-7 (or 8) of the draft. After that, the parent teams get first crack at signing players off their rosters. You go back to the 90 man roster system for a few weeks and then work your way into the preseason.

Basically, this accomplishes three things for the NFL in terms of filling the post-season.

    1. There are now two meaningful drafts.
    2. There is now an extra six weeks of meaningful football (because teams want extra roster spots).
    3. Most of the players playing these games are not going to play in the regular season, so there are fewer concerns than adding regular season games with the main roster players.

I gotta say a lot of this was gobbledygook to me.

But I miss the USFL. Spring/summer football was fun. And I’m not a baseball fan, and NHL/NBA isn’t very fun for me unless Chicago teams are in the playoffs, so it would be a nice alternative to all the sports fans who are left out in the cold during those boring months of summer when the only thing on TV is rednecks driving around in circles, rich guys whacking their tiny white balls, rich guys whacking their small green balls, and fat guys on a diamond.

    • CanadaBear

No wonder you’re good at chess. Kind of a big thinker! This works for me even though I like MLB and NHL.

A Republican congressman in Virginia named Mike Webb posted a political post to his Facebook page.

He took a screenshot of his browser to bitch about some web site or post, doesn’t matter.

What matters is that his other tabs in the browser screenshot showed he was looking at hardcore porn.

So stupid. Too stupid to serve needs to be a thing.

Here is a sign of how deep systemic corruption lays within the heart of the nation:

Employees of a major international bank were divided into a control group and a treatment group. All subjects were asked to flip a coin 10 times and report truthfully on the number of heads, with more heads resulting in a bigger monetary prize. The treatment group was subtlety reminded they were bankers, while the control group was not. Simply reminding them that they were professional bankers was enough to induce the employees to cheat by exaggerating the number of heads they flipped.
