Five Thoughts on Another Bears Loss (From Paris, With Love)

| November 21st, 2016

Straight to it…

  • Defense is getting better and will be a force in 2017. But the Bears have SO MANY questions on offense to answer between now and the draft. Who is the quarterback? Where’s the answer at right end? Jeffery? For how much? Are they content at tackle? Big ticket items.
  • Never seen a team deal with injuries like the Bears have over the last calendar year. Whether there is a reason beyond bad luck is beyond me but the team played yesterday on offense in the second half without 3/5 of starting offensive line, both starting wide receivers (one non-injury) and the starting tight end. It’s just not enjoyable to sit through.
  • I wonder if the narrative would have changed again if Cutler pulled that game out at the death. I know I watched him differently yesterday, resigned to a life without 6 taking the snaps. I felt like I was watching a temperamental 85-year old actor do a farewell tour of The Cherry Orchard at Bucks County Playhouse. I am now watching Cutler with a twinge of nostalgia.
  • Bears can’t fire John Fox, despite my previous belief. These guys are playing hard. They just don’t have the heathy horses on offense.
  • Special thanks to The Grand Canadian in Paris. Big screen, hospitable and full of fans truly rooting on their TEAM and not their FANTASY team. Wish I could bring the spirit of that place back with me to the states.

  • SC Dave

Definitely first place in injuries of any Bears team I can remember.

Scroll down just a bit here:

  • Weed Superman (GP)

    buh bye foxy

    • Sauron’s right eyeball

But didn’t Jeff just endorse Fox?

      • Irish Sweetness

I don’t see how this is Fox’ fault. He didn’t draft anybody, sign anybody, and he’s had the most injuries I’ve ever seen. It’s just that kind of season. The worst.

        • Sauron’s right eyeball

I agree. Also been saying that Fox has the official rebuild “get out of jail” pass. It’s year 2 of a possible 5 year sit storm.

    • MB30SD

      Let’s hope so.

    • Will Ginny be willing to pay TWO coaches millions to watch games from their couches?

(Remember, Bears are still paying Trestman)

      • Orcs for Sauron PAC

They only pay him the difference between his Baltimore salary and his Bears salary.

  • MB30SD

The last bullet X 100. See that butch…. Ffkrf.

Oh and even after fucking dismantling the turrible packers, the football media still sucks the dick of the dead corpse. Tug on Superman’s cape… Stfu you absolute fucking wanker

    • My FF team can probably beat the Bears (9-2 baby!)

FF teams are probably the only reason half the regs even tune in to watch games after yet again another shit season.

  • Scharfinator

    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2016/11/21/kyle-long-to-have-multiple-surgeries-which-all-bears-seem-to/

Well… fuck me at least he gets an early start on all of it for next year.

Good to read Floyd returned with the team. Hopefully he can just rest up the rest of the season but be 100% come 2017.

    • Big Mike

never saw a team with so many projected impact players wiped out.
White, Goldman, Long, Sitton, Grasu, Fuller, Floyd, Massie, Miller,

  • Big Mike

The Bears’ have a better core of young talent than the Packers. The Packers look like a patched up team chasing greatness that has past.

    • BerwynBomber

Totally agree. Rodgers finally looked like Rodgers last night, but other than that, the Cheese stink.

    • Sauron’s right eyeball

With a QB. So they do at least have that. Rogers has 3-5 years left? No?

      • Big Mike

Fuck the Packers and Aaron Rogers.

  • Irish Sweetness

So with 12 missed XPs yesterday, a record, what was the point of changing the XP attempt? To emphasize kicking? Why? Did it need to emphasized? Then we need to draft a kicker.

    • BerwynBomber

      Exactly!

Last week on SNF both Michaels and Collingsworth discussed whether the new PAT rule change was the greatest of the modern era.

Really? A rule change that makes the kicking game even more important is seen in such glowing light? And btw, having more two-pointers is not about player safety, which Goodell claims to be about.

I would have rather they just give a team an extra point (after a TD) if they opt not to go for two.

      • Orcs for Sauron PAC

Replace the goalposts with a soccer goal in the back of the endzone. Kick earns points (PAT or FG) if the ball ends up in the net. Goaltending is 100% allowed by as many players as the defense wants to line up there (of course, putting more than 1 or 2 in front of the goal means the kicking team can more easily fake), but the defenders cannot be in the endzone itself.

    • Sauron’s right eyeball

You change the rules when the product suffers. That’s the NFL way.

      • Honest Abe

Every rule change has intended and unintended consequences. The NFL powers never seem to understand the downside of rules changes. That said, being an armchair coach, I would go for 2 points every time my team scored. I have watched teams try to score a TD on fourth and goal from the 5 yard line and then kick an extra point. If a team can’t move the ball two yards for the conversion they don’t deserve it.

  • Irish Sweetness

    DaBearsBlog

    @dabearsblog

If they move on from Cutler and get QB wrong, the rest of it won’t matter.

    > Absolutely. This is it. If we move onwards with Cutty + Shaw next season – were we really going to be pushed over the top by the draft pick we would have gotten by trading Cutty? Those two give us a shot at winning. I’m prepared not to flush Jay’s mental rehab down the toilet – shown since the beginning of last season – and in spots this season … and put it down to this thumb injury. He’s been magical at moments, and bad QBs can’t do that. I think he’s playing hurt. Explains it all.

    • Bad thumb doesn’t explain him still not sensing the rush, holding on to the ball for too long, or bad anticipation, vision.

Plus, if Cutler is on the roster, you’ll never see Shaw on the field, unless he gets hurt again, yet another negative on Cutler.

      It’s time to move on.

  • Irish Sweetness

Still in Paris Jeff? Did you go to the Musee D’Orsay? Don’t miss that.

    • Weed Superman (GP)

Irish wasn’t carrying Dynamite. He was….

dynamite, knives, porn…. the possibilities and conspiracies whirling around my head are endless. Do you have a whip? I am starting to think Irish is an international treasure hunter, an Indiana Jones type.

as crowded as Versailles is, it’s beautiful and a good visit.

      • Irish Sweetness

Yes, beautiful. And to think that was Louis XIV’s gaff – he probably had his dinner in the hall of mirrors followed by a dessert of debauchery.

        • MB30SD

It’s good to be the king

          • MB30SD

            #winning!

  • Malice Halice

By what means and how long did it take for the Cowboys to get this savage O-line everyone is so hyped about? Do we have cap space? Any hot commodities this FA?

    • Sauron’s right eyeball

One thing Jerra has been good at is having an eye for talent. Even blind squirels find an acorn from time to time.

      • Malice Halice

Can Jeffrey contract make or break our off season pick ups? We need to put the house down for some T’s

      • Irish Sweetness

Two superbowl victories. Fair play to him.

      • TomC

Um, if Jerra had been allowed to draft, that OL would not exist, and the Cowboys would be paying for Johnny Football’s rehab. This team is succeeding in *spite* of the owner, not because of him.

    • Big Mike

More than anything, Dallas simply hit on their picks. Bears have hit on Long and Whitehair. Sitton is a great find. So the Bears need at least one tackle to come out of next years draft.

      • MB30SD

come on maings. These guys might not be HOFers, but they’re contributors and are solid:
        * Amos
        * Freeman (fucking STUDDDDDD. Dude’s a baller)
        * Tre
        * Some of the other young DBs
        * Howard
        * Langford and Carey, both good back ups
        * etc…

I think Pace has been a stud. Fox is a fucking loss.

        • BillW

Looking at Floyd, and Whitehair, my sons and I were all saying Pace has clearly improved the Bears. Without any doubt anymore.

          • Irish Sweetness

We’re 2-8, Bill. We’re in the conversation for being the worst team in football. Plenty of room for doubt there.

There’s the case of Slauson. Marshall etc.
AJ + BM + Cam … or AJ + KW + Cam. His decision. If he truly moved Marshall over that NY show, then he’s a dick. Nobody thinks the Slauson move made sense. It just didn’t. His backup QB won 1 game out of 5.

You get 3 seasons (even though he has a 5 yr contract). Let’s see.

        • Big Mike

You are right. I was only referring to the o-line part of the equation. Bears have a solid core. Under performing this year, is actually a blessing. Sending guys to the IR early will prevent any accidental wins. Goldman, Floyd, Bullard, Cornelius Washington.. (BTW fucking AMOS has the absolute worst hand ive ever seen,,

          • MB30SD

yep, we just need decent coaches and not every single player to be on IR and we should be good next year… assuming we find a way to get a decent QB in the house

          • Big Mike

Keep the staff. Keep Cutler, draft a QB. Draft a few OL studs, find a CB. Fill in with FA.

          • MB30SD

Fuck that. Fire fox and his whole team. Except maybe Fangio.

          • Big Mike

            Well, that’s a thought too.

          • Irish Sweetness

Fucking Fangio. All he has to do is blitz about 15% more and we’d have a different-looking defense. So frustrating watching QBs who haven’t been doing well come in and get a free ride. We’re doing okay in sacks, but constant pressure is a must.

          • Irish Sweetness

I think we have plenty of CBs Mike. Pace just dumped a good one in Glenn too.

But I like the idea of drafting two OTs, and going at it with Cutty one last time. Drafting a QB in that scenario means Shaw gets poached.

        • SC Dave

Love me some Freeman; have since Game 1. In another positive development, Trevathan showed up yesterday.

          • MB30SD

he is ALWAYS around the ball if not making the tackle or assist. He is easily all-pro man. LOVE that dude. Can you imagine if we had a healthy D around him and tre? Just Damn

He’s not lach level, but he’s not too far off it.

          • Big Mike
          • Irish Sweetness

F–k me. Well that’s it then. Myles Garret in a heartbeat. We will tank au naturale.

          • MB30SD

Out four games on peds. Smmfh

          • SC Dave

            Yikes…

Why didn’t Alshon get stuff from the team? How does Freeman end up with a problem from a prescription? Did he not consult with the team doctors?

          • Irish Sweetness

Trevathan is lost in coverage though. I like him against the run. They should sub in a coverage guy on passing downs. If we have one.

        • Irish Sweetness

I’ve seen Danny in coverage and it’s not pretty, good on the run though. He can stay on the team, but we could upgrade there. DE – ILB – S – OT – TE – QB? There’s the draft in whatever order. Kicker in the 7th.

    • BillW

I’d have to go back and see, but are teams generally successful with FAs on the O-line? Sitton was a no-brainer for us. Massie didn’t seem to be great or horrible. It’s surprising how Leno Jr is turning out to be a serviceable LT.

Biggsy says it’s tough to see the Bears drafting any lower than 5. Still too early to project picks, but if a great QB is not there, do we go with an o-line pick?

      • SC Dave

I’m not high on Massie, but as you stated, Leno has been a surprise for a 7th rounder. Not a great player, but not shitty either.

One thing is to get a QB that *gets rid of the ball faster*. Makes the whole line look better.

        • Irish Sweetness

Massie and Leno can both do one as far as I’m concerned Dave.

Leno plays like a 7th rounder on passing downs though. I want him on the bench. Can’t deal with speed. That’s Cutty’s blindside man and I don’t want him there. Maybe we draft a stud and switch him to the right? Pro-bowlers aren’t drafted in the 7th round.

          • Huge Bears Penis

Leno is doing better than anyone we have put on at RT.

      • Irish Sweetness

What’s the situation on Sitton? He didn’t finish the game.

    • Irish Sweetness

How much of that line was drafted?

      • Huge Bears Penis

pretty sure all starters on Dallas line were players they drafted. alot of them in 1st round

  • Weed Superman (GP)

    2 and fucking eight.

    • MB30SD

Hasn’t been this bad in a while. Brutal.

    • Jes, but at least you’re back in the FF playoff race

      #FFlivesMatter

      • Weed Superman (GP)

Looks like I shoulda taken that AJ Green for Deandre Hopkins swap you offered.

        • I think it included McKinon too.

If Sac would’ve started Ivory who I sent to him, might’ve had a bit better chance this week.

          Oh well.

Next week will be an epic matchup between you and Shady, which might determine the #2 seed (which gets a 6 point advantage in the first round)

I know injuries are unavoidable are part of the game, but what the hell is Head Strength and Conditioning Coach, Janson George doing, or not doing, about to keep players ready to play? I don´t think it is just “bad luck”.

  • CanadaBear

Had to laugh at a Fudgie fan on the NFL site. The article was about injuries. In the comments he’s gloating about Sitton being hurt, they didn’t get stuck with him, blah, blah, blah, and a bunch of lol’s. I pointed out to him that as shitty as his team was he might want to lay low. Those dipshits are really in denial. Without Erin the Fudgies would be one of the worst teams in the league and they still think they are going places as soon as they “right the ship”. Uh, no.

    • Big Mike

The Packers have been over 500 the past few years ONLY because of Rodgers. Their GM/ Coach/Drafts etc haven’t been shit they simply tripped on their dicks 10 years ago and ended up with Rodgers

  • willbest

Could we hire some WWE trainers? The guys that teach you how to roll out of your fall and stuff? Or when its time to fail and not snap your leg in half?

    • BillW

Two injuries yesterday were unusual in different ways.

Miller getting stepped on by JPP (with cleats? Or is it fake stuff there?). Not surprising that would break his foot.

Then Floyd leads with his head down at a strong clip right into a pile of bodies. Not much good is going to happen from that. He is very fortunate indeed it was mild enough to be released from the hospital (with a brace or halo on I assume). He could have died right there.

      • Irish Sweetness

In fairness, that was 100% Floyd’s fault. You’d chew out a kid for doing that.

  • BearDown100393
  • BillW

As much as I want to bask in the Packers misery, I really can’t. But with both us and them at full strength, I’d bet on us (taking the points of course since the Packers are consistently overrated.)

The “problem” with this season is there is really no one to be mad at. Not even Jay. I knew he’d get a sack/fumble somewhere with that line. Giants had to be looking for that.

Some writers wondering why Birdcage abandoned the run. But it seemed like the Giants were overplaying it. Especially with Zack out, and two (soon 3) backups on the line, and neither Howard or Langford a big pass catching threat.

The D did OK, but lack of sacks was surprising. Still, the patched up secondary held Odell in check.

The whole season is a mulligan. I doubt they will fire Fox, but I wouldn’t mind seeing what they could do next year with Fangio as HC and a new OC.

    • CanadaBear

Howard was at 6 yds/carry at the half. After 7 carries in the second half he was down to 4 yds/carry. They definitely were playing run first in the second half.

      • Bender McLugh

not for the first drive when they were backed up to the 15, that was pass pass pass, and pathetic at that. Loggains isn’t showing any ability to adjust coming out of half time. While there are personnel issues that may cause SOME of the bad play calling ability, I can’t buy that excuse as the entire story. Loggains refusal to adjust is problematic.

Edit: “bad play calling ability” – I mean there are injuries to the O that definitely influence what Loggains is comfortable calling as an adjustment.

        • Bender McLugh

first drive in the 2nd half

    • BerwynBomber

Can’t pin the entire loss on Cutler (not that you were). He played well while Miller was still in the game, and the Giants turned up the pass rush in the second half when the Larsen/Adams side was exposed.

That said, Cutler has always held onto the ball an inordinate amount of time, and post-Gase, his pocket presence seems to have regressed to where it has been most of his career. (And both the late game strip sack and INT were avoidable and pretty much entirely on him.)

Positive things for the Bears this year:

      1) Howard
      2) Overall play of the D
      3) Potential of Floyd, Whitehair, Callahan and Meredith
      4) Stability of Freeman/Trevathan

Who knows about Fox? I guess in some sense one could argue he should be given a semi-pass but I honestly expected them to contend for a post-season slot with Fox and Cutler in two years. That was the whole point of keeping an aging QB with no future plan at the position and hiring a veteran, proven HC, correct?

Anyway, that obviously hasn’t come close to happening. So the Pace watch should be very interesting in the off-season.

    • Irish Sweetness

Missing two pro-bowl guards and being left with Leno and a backup is going to abandon your run for you.

  • I wonder if the narrative would have changed again if Cutler pulled that game out at the death – Jeff

Nah. Because he played a good game vs Vikes then had all the momentum coming into the Bucs and still had a horrible game. How can you trust a guy like that week to week?

And it’s not as if Cutler was looking like the Gase version yesterday. He was looking more like the Martz version. Making some great plays but STILL holding on to the the ball too long, taking unnecessary sacks, and poor pocket presence and ball security.

Broken record…these things won’t get fix

Like I said, he had like a C- game yesterday, which I guess is better than the F- vs Bucs, but you don’t pay a QB like $15M/yr for C- backup performance.

    • Big Mike

Until there is someone better on the roster, nothing you can do. Only question is opportunity cost in the off season. Is there a QB the bears should take in the top 5, or do you lock down a starting OT? A great line, makes a QB. See Prescott who was never in the top6 or 7 QBs in last years draft.

      • Irish Sweetness

Have you seen Trubisky Mike? What do you think of him?

  • MB30SD

    • Weed Superman (GP)

I did. I appreciated the fact they were straight with the test. I knew the 918 would be fastest, it’s electronic steering along with AWD meant it would kill the McLaren through the windy on the track in Portugal.

The McLaren is just a beast. 900hp and RWD = death. When Clarkson forgot to let go of the wing deployment button and braked to stop, he very nearly swapped ends. It’s too much car. The only track it wins on is LeMans.

I appreciated the way they “killed” the celebrity segment, that was funny.

As usual, the wit and banter is so good between the boys, it kills everyone else.

      • MB30SD

Yes. He looked legitimately fucking terrified while trying to stop it that run. I thought Hammond’s comment that the car was trying to kill him and he wasn’t even in it anymore was hilarious.

The la ferarri is a beautiful car, I think I take that out of the three. Just not a Porsche guy although it is one helluva car

        • Weed Superman (GP)

The Ferrari The Ferrari as May calls it, is beautiful. It has strong ties to the Enzo, from which it is clearly inspired. It has the best dashboard, best gauges, best seats, nicest materials, looks the best and is brutal in a straight line if you can master the launch control, which May clearly could not.

You would easily score the most hooch in the ferrari and it would not be close. You pull up on the LV strip in that wearing a white linen suit and a powder blue shirt and women will throw their panties on the bonnet.

          • MB30SD

I might try that once in my life

          • Irish Sweetness

The Aston DB. That’s the shit.

          • MB30SD

            Nah, not my style.

  • Bears can’t fire John Fox, despite my previous belief. These guys are
playing hard. They just don’t have the heathy horses on offense. – Jeff

Ugh, what use is playing “hard” if they’re ill-coached?

That’s like a guy with a fast 40 time who doesn’t know his assignment – all he’ll do is get to the wrong spot faster.

In-game many of us remarked how we expected the Halftime Zombies to come out, and they DID.

    Predictably.

The Bears either come out like Zombies or make ZERO adjustments at half time and become zombies.

    That’s on the coaches.

(Although, I must add that under Hoyer, this was less of a problem as the team was more consistent and in games from start to finish).

I just don’t trust that Fox can out coach ANYONE at this point.

I still say we fire his ass and promote Fangio as interim to see how that goes.

  • Bears offense in 2017. Who’s the QB? Who are the tackles? Who are the
wide receivers? Who is the tight end brought in to complement Miller? – Jeff

    My plan.

QB. Hoya, Shaw + draft pick/Glennon
RT. Long. See if Kush can play RG, and if not, draft/sign OG who are easier to find
TE. See if Brauckner can progress this season. Still would like Graham from Cards as complement, or Vernon Davis if he’s free.
WR. If we’re going to throw the bank, throw it at Tyrell Pryor. He’s way more athletic than Alshon. Right attitude. HEALTHY. Might be a lil cheaper too, and young. See if future HOFer Braverman is any good, if not, FA slot receiver, preferably white “scrappy” who can also return. Basically, a healthy Royal.

    • willbest

NFL teams generally don’t carry 3 QBs on their active roster. Your plan is either
      QB1 – top 5draft pick
      QB2 – hoyer
      PS – Shaw

or your plan is not in line with anything we have seen out of an NFL team in the last 5-10 years.

Also, we have Miller under contract next year. I would rather have him than Davis.

      • BerwynBomber

I suggested a Hoyer/Glennon/Shaw plan too (if Pace was targeting 2018 for his QB draft) with idea being that you would have an open completion throughout camp and preseason, keep two on the 53, and either trade, cut or stash the odd guy out on the PS.

Btw, my preference is a draftee, but if this year’s class is pure dogshit, Hoyer/Glennon/Shaw is an alternative.

        • willbest

Who really knows what translates into the NFL. Derrick Carr would have been drafted #1 in 2014 in a redo. Same with Dak Prescott this year, followed by Wentz at 2, and Goff would be the late first round project pick with Lynch being a 3rd round flier.

Its a rare year that no serviceable QB appears, but some years are certainly more challenging than others.

          • Big Mike

            DAK=function of great O -line

          • willbest

            Hoyer isn’t 9-1 behind that O-line

          • Big Mike

Can’t say. Point is QB play is a function of O-line play. With the Bears, Dak would look like he did in college. Which was the 8th or 9th best QB in a weak QB draft class.

          • willbest

Hoyer can’t throw it more than 12 yards Dak can. Dak is also more mobile than Hoyer. I find it hard to believe he wouldn’t beat Indy and Jax in addition to Detriot as a Bear. Our line has been pretty solid for a good chunk of the season.

          • Big Mike

Dak Prescott is good because the Cowboys have the best offensive line in football. Our starters aren’t bad. But we’ve only had them in place for what..2 games. Also, as far as I know Dak Prescott isn’t available and finding the next one is a crap shoot. Moral of the story is if you build a stud offensive line, miraculously your odds of finding a good QB go up.

          • SC Dave

Was it even 2 games, or was that .2 games?

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

So this begs the question….Do lineman in the NFL suck or are they just too damn lazy and stupid to learn the playbook? The student athlete is a thing of the past.

          • Big Mike

The physical and mental demands of playing offensive line are greater than any other position.

            Get Outlook for iOS

          • Think I mentioned this b4, but some ppl think it’s been lack of playing time that has really hurt Oline play.

That unit relies more on reps and chemistry than on straight athleticism.

          • Irish Sweetness

That’s just plain wrong Mike. A good OL does not make a good QB. You are either a good QB or you are not. A good OL doesn’t make you talented. Yes, he has a good OL. YOu put a bad QB behind a good Ol and they are still bad, their numbers will just be better.

          • Big Mike

There are so many variables that go into “What makes a good QB” Ryan Leaf was always going to be a selfish douche. But lets look at a handful of QBs.
tell me Blake Bortles wouldn’t be a better QB behind that o-line, or Mike Glennon, or Tannehill, or Osweiler, or Nick Foles. Look at Teddy Bridgewater before AP got hurt, kid wasn’t better than any of these guys, but his stats were. By the time a kid plays QB ball at a major program, gets drafted there’s a guarantee that he’s a pretty good QB. There’s a huge transition like there is for every player. A great offensive line, makes that transition immeasurably easier.

          • Irish Sweetness

Sorry Mike. Are you saying that Hoyer may be better than Prescott? Prescott – regardless of the team he’s on, is a stud. Nobody could ever call Hoyer that. Hoyer can’t make the basic throws beyond ten yards. He can’t hit people deep because he’s not accurate and doesn’t have the arm strength. Anyone pointing at his completion percentage is for some reason mistaking that for a measure of accuracy. It is not. It is completion percentage, and Hoyer only throws it when it has no chance of being intercepted. That’s not always a good thing.

He is a terrible option if you want to win games.

          • Big Mike

            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_lBltVU_dY

He’s an ok QB. He’d have 7 or 8 wins with Dallas

    • Sauron’s right eyeball

My guess is we won’t know who the QB will be until the 2018 draft. As for the rest of it? Your guess is as good as mine. Zack Miller? I don’t think he’s a longterm TE. Let’s face it, our offense has a long way to go. I’m guessing ithat won’t come together for 2 more years.

    • Irish Sweetness

QB: Which is it? we carry two. Hoyer is a bad starter – can’t make the throws he’s needs to make. Shaw + draft pick doesn’t leave you with much experience. Cutty + Shaw has to be the best fit for one year. If Shaw is okay, you say goodbye to Cutty for 2018 and go with Shaw + Draft pick.

  • roglesby

It’s never Jay’s fault…. Jays defenders will talk about the O-line, receivers, TE out, etc. All TRUE. But that DOESN’T excuse the fact that they ignore his picks that tend to come at critical times…. his decision making is awful and no where near the quality of his arm…

    • Huge Bears Penis

nope you are wrong. Jay is the greatest. Future HOFer!

      • roglesby

Ahhhh and there it is…. Just like when Jay was out. “Oh jay can play, he would have hit Alshon in the endzone!” while I argued that all the Jay defenders counted the TDs they ignored all the interceptions/pick 6’s he throws with awful decisions. Can he play ball? YES. Is he the QB we all hope he is? No. We have had years of watching him play. Two things are consistent. 1- great arm and can make some plays. 2- throws INTs exactly when you dont need it and when he throws 1 he is going to throw 3…. He will win you a game like Minn and then lose just as many… Stop acting like he is the second coming.

  • Wobbly Pop

Playing hard is NOT the reason to hold onto FOX ! They can do that for a variety of reasons as many are on 1 year deals and others are rookies looking to stick or start 1 day ! Fox still has all the same warts he had before the injuries started to pile up with flags , adjustments at 1/2 and in game as well as dealing with injuries and media ! No sir i am not buying into him as a good coach , only a somewhat rah rah guy who can get some guys going sometime for sometime ! Take away the pom poms and we have a hot dog vendor type yell on the sidelines with similar results !

I assume the team does not monitor what players take, or players lie if they do. Sounds like an issue either way.

I don’t think so. But sending guys to IR so quickly and declaring them out for the year so quickly, seems like a smart move. Sandbagging to me is not playing the best available guys. The key word being available…

Braukner might take Miller’s spot too.

      Team just gotta whiter!

  • ButtonShoes

Kyle Fuller’s coming off IR. So Kevin White is done for this season.

    • Big Mike

Fuller needs the work. It will be good to see him play. Offense.. is a cluster fuck. May as well sit him out

      • ButtonShoes

Thing is, White needs that development time. He needs to play. He was a project when he was drafted, and now he won’t get that time until 2 years after he was drafted. That’s not good at all.

        • Big Mike

Of course he does, but the entire offense is dysfunctional at the moment. Not a true sample. Terrible reps for a “rookie”

        • willbest

White is a bust. Brittle bones. Who knows if his speed will return, and he has mental issues as well.

          • ButtonShoes

You’re gonna need 10 points from Murray tonight to beat Artoo and hang on to playoff contention.

      • willbest

I need 33 points from Lamar Miller and Deandre Hopkins tonight in order to not be eliminated from playoff contention. So I am pretty much hosed.

        • For some reason, I still believe in Hopkins, and I gotta think that Oz can’t be that bad.

Either way, I traded him and a few other players for Evans, so I don’t have to worry about him or Oz anymore.

People make mistakes. Sometimes real dumb ones. It happens. Check out that banned list. Its rather intense. Easy to sit in the armchair, point a finger and say check with the trainer. These players have lives. They get sick. And don’t feel well. Like us. An OTC is generally not a big deal to you or me. However for them, it could mean 4 games. Is this an excuse? Well maybe. Or maybe not depending on the viewpoint. Was the intent to cheat? Who knows. But there is more than enough other plausible explanations to consider. Both players took responsibilities. They are paying the price. And they will move forward. We should as well.

    • Sauron’s right eyeball

I have to wonder if these banned substances are used as leverage on certain players by Teams? Nah……it’s a stupid question.

The Ryan Pace/John Fox era continues to screw us over. Get ready for Matt Barkley, people:

    @BradBiggs

“When it rains it pours. #Bears QB Jay Cutler suffered shoulder injury and team is exploring if it is season-ending.”

    • BearDown100393

Jay was taken down hard a few times yesterday and slow to get up.

      • SC Dave

Probably that one very early in the game where the Giants were flagged for the personal foul.

    • Barkely starting? noooooooo

    • BerwynBomber

If this happens, I’m starting to buy into Butch’s conspiracy theories about Cutler’s injuries this year.

      • Yes, “Shoulder” injury.

I would believe it more if was Hoyer stepping up to the plate, but Barkley?

That regime would have to be even more tired of Cutler than me.

Seeing Mariotta come to Solider Field is gonna be an extra slap to the face.

        • BerwynBomber

Injury #1: we wanna take an extended look at Hoyer
Injury #2: we’re tanking the season for the best draft slot possible

Not saying it’s the case, BUT a) six weeks to return from a sprained thumb (and only returned after Hoyer went down), and b) the shoulder injury didn’t even involve sideline treatment yesterday (or cause him to miss a play).

If you wanna buy the conspiracy it is not a huge leap.

          • willbest

Then against if Cutler is your starting QB next year, odds are the injuries were legit.

          • BerwynBomber

Then again, if they’re legit, it would give you MAJOR pause about a 34 year old’s durability moving forward.

Also: going back to Butch’s original theory, I don’t know if it was suggest the injuries were faked, more that there was little rush for him to return.

Anyway, I was just tossing it out there. For all I know Cutty has a torn labrum. But the length of sprain thing (and timing of his return) could seem a bit dubious if you believed in something like that.

          • willbest

No doubt, but he isn’t exactly breaking the bank at $15 million next year and there is up to $2 million clawback on that if he isn’t healthy. Plus for whatever reason he plays better in odd years (11, 13, 15) than he has in even years (12, 14, 16)

          • $15M for a backup IS a lot of $$$

          • That Guy

            At any position but QB.

Plus, you’re not paying much to the starter if we draft him.

          • willbest

He isn’t backing up anybody next year if we aren’t drafting a QB with our top 5 pick.

          • BerwynBomber

Yeah I don’t disagree that the Bears could keep him, but oddly enough that only seems to work if they retain Fox (or give the job to Fangio). But short of hiring Mike Shanahan, would any new HC want Cutler? I just can’t see why a fourth regime would want to be saddled with his history and cost/efficiency ratio.

          • But Fox has already proven he prefers Hoyer.

So neither Fox nor Pace (who reportedly seriously considered trading up for Mariotta) really want him.

          • BerwynBomber

Yeah, that’s why I said “oddly enough”. Then again, maybe Fox wasn’t that enamored of Hoyer either by the time the latter went down.

          • Make RedZone Conv% Great Again

            sad

          • BerwynBomber

Yeah, I should have clarified. I wasn’t saying your guy was faking. More that maybe someone (on the coaching staff or front office) wanted to extend the recovery period.

Anyway, I don’t particularly buy it but the thumb injury/return did play out oddly.

  • I wonder what it will take to get Fox fired.

If we only end up with 2 wins, that has to be enough I would imagine.

But who knows? If ppl on this board are excusing him because of INJ, maybe the higher ups at Halas are too, esp since they’re more invested in him than the casual fan.

I still contend that we cannot draft a QB in the 1st unless Fox is gone.
I guess we can try to do a Carr at the top of the 2nd, but even that essentially ties the next HC to a QB they don’t want.

And can we realistically get anything for Cutler?

As Rummy would say, Lots of unknown unknowns going forward

    • That Guy

If a team wants Cutler on a short term deal, I could see them giving up a pick to avoid offering him guaranteed money. His deal is very team friendly at this point, and the annual cost isn’t terrible if you plan to start him.

Its hard to value picks these days, especially for QBs. If I was, say, the Niners. I wanted to clean out the QB room, rent Cutler for a year as insurance with my new first round rookie. Maybe a fourth rounder makes sense to solidify the position the way the Redskins draft Cousins and RGIII the same year.

Part of me thinks its crazy to think a starting quarterback would go for so little. Part of me thinks a fourth round pick for an aging vet is a rare sight these days when rookies are so valuable.

      • Yeah, that’s why I keep going back and forth a lil between getting anything for Cutler.

I could easily envision the NFL deeming Cutler a high end backup ala Fitz.

But teams can get desperate at QB like the Jets that grudgingly signed Fitz (thought that might serve as a warning against Cutler)

I could also see your scenario unfolding.

Get an inj prone vet to be the “bridge” while the true franchise QB learns on the bench.

But will teams pay $15M and a 4rth (likely high) for a “bridge”?

We’re only paying Hoyer like $3M. I think that would be more what GMs are looking for in the area of “bridge”.

NFL also knows we’re parting with Cutler one way or another, and they can afford to wait it out.

        • Huge Bears Penis

if you don’t get what you want in trade in the offseason, then you keep him on the roster. Wait till there is an injury at QB on another team, then trade ala Bradford. It’s not like we are hurting for cap space. This year there were 2 teams that had their starters go down early. Vikings made a trade, my guess Cowboys would have made a trade if there was a QB worth it out there.

  • So… Freeman suspended, Cutler season likely done due to injury.

    Positives:
    1) Lots of playing time for Nick Kwiatkowski. I’m excited to see him on the field again, he looked solid earlier this year when Trevathan was hurt.

    2) With Cutler out, they’re going 2-14 and getting a top 3 draft pick. Which bodes well for a shot at the QB of the future (as per my research published last week).

    • and we’re about to see Kyle Fuller again, who is the best CB on the team. Start figuring out if he’s part of your answer going forward.

      • SC Dave

I kinda like Callaghan, actually. Not saying he’s better than Fuller, but he’s been a pleasant surprise. Not sure he’s big enough, however, to long withstand the violence of the NFL. But neither was Steve Smith, so who knows?

        • I should say, he was their best CB last year. He’s still their most proven guy.

        • I like Callahan too. He just has to stay on the field.

    • MB30SD

Walter has us reaching for Mitch Trubisky of NC. I wonder if that dude is any good.

    • BerwynBomber

I can’t BUT reports circulated last week that the Bears were very interested in Kaaya (QB of the U). But I have not heard that Kaaya would go as high as top three.

      • Kaaya is seen more as a top 2nd rounder.

        • willbest

With QB’s I absolutely support trading back into the bottom of the 1st to nab them with the 5th year option

          • That seems to be the trend. Just depends on how GMs view certain QBs.

I could never tell who’s gonna fall. That’s all inside trader shit.

Giving up a 3rd rounder that’s like 64th pick is valuable though, and if the QB pans out, gonna have to pay out anyways.

    • willbest

Well he is finding value all over the draft, but I think part of it happens to be that all his guys are getting playing time. And there is a reasonably decent chance that next year there won’t be anybody left from the Angelo/Emery era save for Kyle Long, Fuller, and Leno.

You watch pro safeties drop pick 6’s , nickel corners acting as if the double move was invented on 11/20/16, no pass rush, no push up the middle, Miller getting hurt because he had to double team JPP because Adams is a huge cumhole, 4 fucking drops on dumpoffs, Wilson inexplicably running out of bounds on a fucking guaranteed TD and that’s what you fucking come up with?? jesus man.

          • You act as if Cutler is the first QB to ever get pressure in the history in the NFL.

Hoyer played behind the same Oline Cutler did at the start, and got sacked less, and didn’t turn it over.

            http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-highlights/0ap3000000738223/Jay-Cutler-throws-pick-six-to-Chris-Conte

          • Make RedZone Conv% Great Again

oh my god how fucking long have you been sleeping with fucking Hoyer. Read the fucking post.

          • CanadaBear

You’re lucky he hasn’t trotted out the Tebow was a better QB for Fox than Cutler this year. There are stats to back it up. Liars figure and figures lie!

          • Not as long as you’ve been sleeping with Cutler, and that’s a loooong time.

Either everyone on this board is right, and you’re wrong.

Or you have some magical powers that will make Cutler better than what he has been all this years (including healing powers).

            Which is more likely?

          • CanadaBear

Why let this bother you Johnny? I don’t get it. Just skip the posts.

          • I don’t even care about Cutler, really. It’s like being mad at clown shoes.
            Kinda sad, but funny also.

          • CanadaBear

You’ve been pretty relentless recently. I agree with ya for the most part. I’ve been on the sidelines since the first game of 2014. It certainly isn’t all on Cutler but enough is enough.

          • I have been, I admit. But I mostly do it for fun.

            I don’t take it personally.

If Cutler wins a SB on a dream team, so be it.

          • SC Dave

            Don’t worry, he won’t. Unless he’s carrying a clipboard.

          • Make RedZone Conv% Great Again

Canada, if I let my 5 year old eat Halloween candy for breakfast without telling him he cannot eventually he will simply believe that he is correct and that it is appropriate breakfast fare.

In this case Butch is my 5yr old and Hoyers penis is the Halloween candy.

          • willbest

Butch’s obsession with a QB that can’t throw the ball more than 12 yards is seriously disturbing. If I knew him in real life I would have staged an intervention long ago. As it stands I think he half does it at this point just to troll.

        • Sauron’s right eyeball
      • That Guy

Here’s your choice. JJ Watt or the worst of Wentz, Bortles or Carr (all recent QBs taken high, but not #1).

        • Bortles would be my fear.
          Carr it the real deal.
Wentz at least looks promising, and probably worth the risk.

We can always get a high priced DE if we hit on QB though, so I’d have to say Carr/Wentz would be first priority.

As the Jets have proven, a badass Dline doesn’t automatically translate to wins when the QB is shit.

          • BerwynBomber

Wentz will be fine. But yeah, Bortles looks like Cutty 2.0.

        • SC Dave

Depends on how you want to look at it. The best DL in the NFL for six years, and done with a bad back? Or a 12-18th est QB that starts for a decade or more?

          Tough choice, actually.

  • Make RedZone Conv% Great Again

Personally I’d pay money to watch a rookie QB get protected by Mike Adams and Charles Leno Jr. That would be priceless. We’d have the first pro quarterback to cry on the field.
You guys have no problem with the shit stains at safety? CB? OL? TE? WR?
PED’s?? Are you fucking kidding me?

    • willbest

You can buy Berry. Chiefs aren’t going to tag him again. Leno is serviceable. I wouldn’t take issue with using our top 5 pick to grab the best tackle available though, but I am going to straight murder Pace if he doesn’t pick up a QB in the first 3 rounds this year.

      • Rd 1 pick should be top QB or stud pass rusher/OT.

If they don’t go QB in rd 1, has to be the pick in rd 2.

        • Are you for drafting a QB in the 1st even if Fox is still the coach?

          • willbest

If I am Pace, I fire Fox, get my HC and we go get his QB in round 1. Of course I might not have that option thanks to Ernie/Ted/George, so if I am keeping Fox then

            A) FA
            1) Presume to roll with Cutler unless Cousins is less than 18 mil/50 million guaranteed
            2) Pay Berry
            3) Pay Jeffery
            4) Cut Houston (not worth 7 mil), Royal (not worth 5 mil), Massie (not worth 6 mil)
            5) Extend Leno for value, make him earn his payday otherwise.
            6) Go find a veteran tackle. Looks like there are a few in the 31-33 range that might be had affordably on 1-2 year deals.

            B) Draft
            1) best tackle or pass rusher assuming the pass rusher grades a fair bit better
            2) QB, though I would consider moving back up into 1 depending on how the draft is playing out and what QB hungry teams are still picking
            3) Ideally a high quality CB prospect, but DL or TE would work too
            4) A slot WR/returner
            5) a project tackle or DE
            6) Is there an elite kicker worth securing before UFA?
            7) needle in the haystack

          • SC Dave

            I like Round 6!! 🙂

  • BerwynBomber

Does anyone know which shoulder it is? Hopefully for Cutty’s sake, it’s not his throwing shoulder.

    • MB30SD

      Doooonnnn’t caaaaaaaare

  • Assuming Cutler is done, here’s where we stand with 6 games left this year:

QB1 (Cutler) missed 11 games due to injury
QB2 (Hoyer) missed 9 games due to injury
QB3 (Shaw) missed all 16 games
So the Bears got a TOTAL of 12 games from their top 3 QBs this year (1 of the 3 played 9.5/16 games)

Starting RB missed 4 games, got Wally Pipp’d

    WR1 missed 4 games
WR2 missed 2 games (and counting?)
    WR3 missed 12 games
    WR4 missed 9 games

Starting C missed all 16 games
Starting RG (Pro Bowler) missed 7 games (played through injury in the 9 he did play)
Starting LG (All Pro) missed 2 games (and counting?) (played through injury most of season)
Starting RT missed 1 game (and counting?)

Starting NT/best DL missed 7 games (and counting?)
    Backup NT missed 7 games
Starter/top backup DE (Ferguson) missed all 16 games

Best OLB missed 6 games, has yet to play 50% of snaps in a game
3rd best OLB missed 14 games
4 best OLB/rookie 1st round pick may miss last 6 games

1 starting ILB missed 2 games
Other starting ILB will miss 4

CB1 (Fuller) has yet to play this year (10 games and counting)
CB2 (Callahan) has missed 2 games, parts of many others
CB4 (Hall) has missed 5 games (and counting?)

Other than that, it’s been a great year. Really.

    • Is there any info that compares inj between teams?

I know it seems like a lot, but we really only focus on our own team.

The announcers kept saying how the Pack were completely depleted due to INJ too, but I can’t imagine it’s been to our extent.

Then, there’s prolly like weighting, like if Vadgers goes down, that team is really fucked.

      • I tried doing some stuff like this a few years ago. Doesn’t seem to be a ton out there other than total games lost, which is a terrible metric, IMO.

I broke it down further for NFCN by starters and Pro Bowlers lost, but it was a fuckton of work for just 4 teams. And that site is no longer up, so I don’t even have the data anymore.

        • Yeah, I haven’t come across anything like that either, which is really strange.
Figure there would be some site that would track injuries over a season and not just week to week.

The weighting would be crazy tough though.

Like how would losing AP to INJ compare to SEA losing Prosise who while limited track record, looked good, or even say how would we compare Gronk being out a few weeks or Brady, when both are best at their respective position.

But I figure at least track starters, draftees. Seems clean cut enough.

        • Johnnywad

Is a fuckton more than a metric ton? I don’t even know anymore.

          • Huge Bears Penis

no it goes metric ton < Shit ton < Fuckton

    • CanadaBear

The year the cheese won the SB they had a ton of guys on IR but not nearly as many first/second team guys.

    • Missed a couple.

Porter (CB3 in my book, you could argue CB2 or CB1) has missed 1 game and is currently hurt.
Miller (TE1) will miss final 6 games.

    • AlbertInTucson

The PAC 12 Network ran a stat during the Arizona-Oregon State game Saturday night.

Arizona has been savaged by injuries at QB and at running.

The stat was for the Pac 12 but I think it translates fairly reasonably to the NFL.

Teams that started 1 QB were all well over .500, contending for titles and headed for bowl games.

Teams that started 2 QBs hovered around .500.

Teams that started 3 different QBs in a season were SCREWED.

      • It’s probably even more true in the NFL when the QBs aren’t that interchangeable.

Wasn’t there that one year Bama won it all with a 3rd string QB?

Don’t know when the last time that happend in the NFL, if ever

Biggs offers a potential obit on Cutler’s Bears career. Solid, fair work that Biggs is known for:

    http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/football/bears/

Maybe one of the most interesting bits is that Pace was hoping Wentz would fall in the draft. Biggs seems to suggest Bears would have taken him had he been available.

Couple this with the known pursuit of Mariota and it provides some reassurance in terms of Pace drafting QB. Then again, he could still crap the bed. Who knows.

    • willbest

Wentz wasn’t falling the second the Eagles traded up to 2nd.

      That’s nuts, and fishy.

      • willbest

What defenses do they play the rest of the way, and how many home games, etc.

        • By almost any metric or argument, Forte is a much better option.

          1. Forte is literally a top 6 back in our league
          2. Forte has scored 204 points, Crowell 154
          3 Last 3 games, Forte has scored, 18, 19, 31, 39
          ———————————–Crowell 6, 7, 8, 15
          4. Browns are always trailing, in which case they use Duke Johnson
          5. They get less TDs chances
          6. It’s Forte! He’s BETTER than Crowell

          Who would you take?

I also just happen to beat Trac, and probably knocked him out of championship contention.

Dunno. I’ll let it stand, but it’s dubious at best.

Only way I see Crowell better is if the Browns suddenly start winning or Forte goes down (in which case, it’s just luck)

To: Magnus Bearson (NBIT) – Motty Stone
From: DOO TOWN (DC) – Big Daddy
    NBIT trades
    Isaiah Crowell, Cle RB
    Mike Wallace, Bal WR
    DC trades
    Darren Sproles, Phi RB
    Julio Jones, Atl WR

    Man, what a bullshit trade.

    • That Guy

I have no idea why he made that offer. But I wasn’t going to say no. He rejected a better package for Antonio Brown and sent me that proposal this morning. I stopped getting ready for work and ran to the computer to (1) make sure I didn’t miss news about Jones getting injured, and (2) accept the offer before he changed his mind.

      • Weed Superman (GP)

That’s a league changer. Congrats. Trac just wanted to tilt the league to his boy, I guess. Commish should watch that kind of thing. You may now have a team that can take Butch down.

Everyone else will be fighting for bronze.

        • That Guy

Definitely helps the cause, but WR is a really weird position group. I think the way scoring is set up over-rewards 50+ yard catches. So you get two guys with similar production, but because one of them happened to break off an 80 yard run on one play, he’s got like 20 more fantasy points for the week.

Still, I suspect I’ve got 1 or 2 more moves left in me before the season is done.

          • Weed Superman (GP)

          Oh well.

      • CanadaBear

He was incredulous Nessman was a HC because of the Nessman thing. That really resonated with me because I’d never heard a player basically say the new HC is a milquetoast panty waist.

          • MB30SD

            And agree

          • Yeah, but then you had guys like Rich Gannon totally go to bat for him, and other coaches who said it was about time and a long time coming.

It was supposed to be “revenge of the nerds” and it ended up being “revenge of the turds”

        • MB30SD

Worse than fox? I’m not so sure anymore man. What does that fucking tell you about fox. Jesus

          • CanadaBear

Nessman is smarter than Fox but Fox acts like a man so that puts him one up on Nessman.

          • Weed Superman (GP)

Fox is old and mailing it in. Still, players like him. They sense he’s a real football guy. Or he was, before he stopped caring.

Trestman is a weasel. Players hated him. He was such a worm he couldn’t face the front of the room. He used that scumbag Saint OC to leak shit to the press about Cutler to save his ass. Dude is the worst corporate shit stain, and all of his ideas about offense suck.

You wanna play Titanfall 2? T2 is like COD, but fun. It has giant robots that you can swordfight with. And jetpacks. And wall running, which is like… a thing now.

      I could be down.

I saw you checking out watchdog’s 2… Or was that the boy? Any good?

      • Weed Superman (GP)

My kid was playing that. I took the kids to SF this summer, so he likes playing it and visiting all the places we visited IRL in the game.

        • MB30SD

          Ha, nice. Violent?

          • Weed Superman (GP)

Less so than the original. Still, plenty of sentences that end in “motherfucker”.

More gangsta, the guy is black and framed for crimes he doesn’t commit, and a certain Black Lives Matter overtone to the game. More fun ways to hack and link triggers together. My son likes it, he plays the guy straight as a good guy – he won’t hurt civvys or, as he says, play in a “GTA way”.

There are some missions where you have go into a rival gang’s crib guns blazing to take their shit. I told him that I didn’t agree with this storyline and this is how gang on gang violence is perpetuated.

  • BerwynBomber

The Hubster was singing Porter’s praises on the radio yesterday. Said Porter shut OBJ down as much as possible and that he has done similar work vs. #1s throughout most of the year. Said Porter deserved Pro Bowl recognition and that he should have a couple solid years left in him.

    • Huge Bears Penis

      Porter Sucks!

      • Weed Superman (GP)

Worst all of all time. ALL TIME! Belongs in the Anti-Canton!

    • CanadaBear

From the games I’ve seen Porter was the best of a bad bunch but I would hesitate to go much further.

    • Weed Superman (GP)

If we can Goldman back and could have established the run game, we would have won.

The D stepped up, but were again asked to be on the field too much.

    • Kept saying it all year, that Porter is decent and has indeed been following WR#1s all season and has held them to about 60yds or something like that (w exception with TY, though I think he was hurt in that game)

He’s not a lockdown, and Callahan is most likely better, but a lot of the receiving yds have come against the rest of the secondary.

Though we might remember this might also be by design.

Why attack Porter when you can attack Bausby, LeBlanc or whatever other JAG w trot out there?

    • Malice Halice

Did he solely shut obj down? I didn’t see the game. If so, give him his credit. NY got a savage trio of WR

  • willbest

Thinking back on the game, Cutler probably F’d up his shoulder on the strip-sack. He had started his throwing motion when he was hit, which probably dramatically increased the strain on the shoulder. Its also why he probably underthrew the ball by about 8 yards on the next play to end the game. Yes his foot slipped but he regularly wings it 30 yards with just his arm.

    • MB30SD

      Striiiip-sack cutty!!!

As someone joked yesterday on the radio, if you could draft Cutler’s arm it would go #1 every year in the draft.

Still don’t think there is anyone with his cannon except maybe Newton, though Rodgers has an impressive fastball too.

      • MB30SD

the rest of him is an UDFA who gets brought in for a tryout and is let go that afternoon.

  • Weed Superman (GP)

So, you are Ryan Pace. you look vaguely like a Westworld bot, but you want to keep your job.

Goldman, and to a lesser extent, Floyd look like NFL starters. Howard might be a gem. Hoyer was a smart FA pickup, even if luck has been a bitch.

Obviously, this offseason, you need to overhaul the off-season conditioning program and look hard at what is going on there. There was insinuation to Fox at yesterday’s presser by the CBS sports team that Jeffery and Freeman both going down for PEDs points to a team cheating. The CBS sports guy said “this appears to a be a ‘if you ain’t cheating, you ain’t trying’ culture at Halas Hall.” Strong words from the MSM.

So, how do you proceed? The double PED story is an embarrassment but not a full on scandal. Yet.

Your coach has clearly quit. You have a solid DC, a guy who has done what he can with what he has.

You draft a rook QB high? Fire Birdcage? Hope for a Carson Wentz? Let Fox go? Make OL a priority finally?

    • MB30SD

      1. Fire Fox and everyone else but Fangio and his guys

      2. Get everything you possibly can for don’t care cutty

      3. Fire the entire strength and conditioning staff and get known entities

      4. Draft order is: 1) QB or Peppers or that DE, 2) DB or QB, 3) TE, 4) OL.

      5. FA needs to be OL, TE, DB, FS if available

meh, whatever on the PEDs thing. They need guys who are better at helping players hide better… I’d look to the Patriot’s staff.

And on that note, I don’t give a fuck… do whatever it takes to get our franchise back on track. Fucking sick of losing and being a fucking laughing stock.

      JUST WIN BABY!

I think they’re just bringing him in cuz he has some familiarity with the system and are expecting Barkley to bomb.

At this point, not sure what other options Bears have unless something crazy happens like the Boys letting Romo go.

That would benefit both us and Romo. He can get a headstart for next season.

November 22, 1963. We werel all just returning from lunch (at home, where we watched BOZO’S CIRCUS on WGN while we ate and stayed long enough to watch THE GRAND PRIZE GAME before heading back to school). Just before 1pm CST, a classmate burst into our 5th grade room and yelled “The shot Kennedy!”. We sat around while they piped the news thru the school intercom including confirmation that the President was dead. Dismissed early.

    • CanadaBear

I was in class in the church basement when the nun came in crying and told us the news. They didn’t let us out early.

Oh hell no. Full on hit you across the face as hard as they could. In 8th grade the nun hit me on the crown of my head with a civics book. I had no idea it was coming. I saw stars and almost went out. The nun was screaming at me (I was talking in class) until it dawned on her that she might have actually hurt me. And she liked me! She was in charge of the altar boys and always gave me the best gigs

          • CanadaBear

True enough. I knew the nuns called my mom all the time when I was getting lit up because she always knew. I begged them to let me go to public school after 8th grade. My mom said that would be no problem but I would need to find another place to live. None of them ever hit me hard enough to make a difference (other than the book to the crown). I knew they were trying to break my spirit and those miserable bitches were never going to accomplish that.

I spent the first half of first grade with “The Penguins”. They scared the crap out of me but never laid a hand on me. We moved on Christmas break and it was public school after that.

          • Huge Bears Penis

I went to a public school in grade school that over half the teachers were nuns. That was interesting.

          • CanadaBear

Never heard of that scenario before. There are so few nuns these days I don’t think many of them are teachers.

          • Huge Bears Penis

The Catholic Church actually owned the building and school grounds and leased it to the Public School district.

          • CanadaBear

That makes sense. A lot of dioceses had deep pockets prior to all the lawsuits.

          • Huge Bears Penis

It was a money grab decades ago before all the lawsuits. As a private school they would not get as much state funding.

          • CanadaBear

I was talking to my piano teacher (I was in my late 30’s-early 40’s) and she also went to Catholic schools. She said she never saw a nun hit anyone in all her years in school. Then she asked, “What order were they?” I replied BVM’s. She scrunched up her nose and said, “Ooh, they’re the hitters!” and she wasn’t kidding. Of course, in grade school we always said BVM stood for Black Veiled Monsters!

I suggest you go back and read the actual FBI report on what she did rather than Slate’s filtration for hypersensitive progs. She shared classified information with people that did not have classification same as the general. Plus she subverted the classification system and of course lied in a deposition. Anyway, you won’t get any sympathy for Petraus from me. The rank and file end up behind bars for far less than either of them. Hang them for all I care.

One of course could check their front page.

It’s on Breitbart’s heir front page with the “Broken Promise” headline. The story itself doesn’t say that.

He’s just another politician breaking campaign promises. If he is just another shill in Washington, even amounts of people will be relieved and disappointed.

    • One of the few stands I actually was for Trump, and naturally, he pussies out (does he grab himself now?)

This does not bode well with “shaking up wall st” for that rust belt worker.

      • CanadaBear

Almost every person that has been talked about for cabinet positions has been a DC insider.

        • Yeah, but naturally, his defenders will retort, “Of course, he can’t hire completely inexperienced guys off the street.”

          Guys like, you know, Trump.

          • willbest

But every person that he hires that isn’t an insider is a Klansman apparently.

      • BillW

You didn’t really believe much of what he said, did you? Specifically I mean.

The best explanation of the Trump phenomenon I read was this:

His critics take him literally but not seriously.
His supporters take him seriously but not literally.

He won as a statement – anti-Hillary to be sure but much more than that.

Many – including me – never saw it coming. I realized though that there was something out there that I wasn’t listening to – out of ignorance in the literal sense (UofC “elitist” and all.)

        Listening now.

        • Gotta remember that Hillary still won the popular vote, so it’s not as if there’s been a major political earthquake IMO.

this was nothing more than a Republican getting lucky with where those votes landed, namely Florida (again).

I guess some ppl were surprised white middle class workers didnt like Hillary.

          I wasn’t.

          • BillW

The popular vote thing is misleading. It hurts to say this since I voted against Trump, but he has a point that he didn’t campaign to win the popular vote. Not saying he would have – as he does. Just that he has a point.

It’s like at the end of a football game the losing team saying “we had more yards than they did”. So what?

          • willbest

Gotta remember the Cubs and Indians tied by most runs. Come on. Team Trump spent $11 per vote, Team Clinton spent $23 per vote. You win by the rules, not something made up. She never even stepped foot in Wisconsin after the primary. Fing hubris.

          • I don’t think it really matters.
Ppl don’t need advertising to find Hillary a douche, or Gore a bore.

You put a Hippo on the Rep ticket, and it’ll still pull about 46% which is what Trump got.

            Not exactly a referendum.

If there was no electoral college (which, and I quote “is a disaster for Democracy” Trump 2012), Hillary would be president, then what would the narrative be?

That yet another Republican nominee lost.

No matter how anyone spins it, more ppl voted FOR Hillary than for Trump, and of those that voted for Trump, a huge amount really just voted against Hillary.

            Not exactly a sweeping revolution.

          • willbest

More people voted for “don’t care” than anything else. Really anybody that could draw 5% of the popular vote can stake a claim to the Presidency with that level of indifference. And its unlikely Hillary would be president under a popular vote election.
            1) More people voted against her than for her, and there is zero chance the popular vote amendment would be written to allow a sub majority president
            2) if we rewind all the way back to the beginning of the season and play by those rules she probably finds herself in a top 2 runoff with Michael Bloomberg or Mark Cuban where she would have gotten crushed.

          • BillW

There is a bill asking for a “none of the above” choice on the ballot. Likely will lose but it’s an interesting concept. Hold conventions in the spring – the election in the summer – do over if necessary in the fall.

        • willbest

If Cutler is out for the year the Jags won’t be an issue because they have 3 wins. SF should smoke the Beloved with Barkley behind center. That should put the Bears in the drivers seat for the #2 pick. I don’t think the Bears can overcome the mighty Cleveland Mojo.

          That will do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • willbest

Jags only have 2 wins, and they use SOS not H2H in draft tiebreakers. Fortunately the Jags are playing the AFCW this year and that division is crushing it, and the NFCN playing the AFCS helps to cancel that out. Still it would be nice if they won another one.

At present the 9ers are crushing us on SOS because the NFCW and NFCS are worse than the NFCE and NFCN. Now we do make up some ground on them playing the AFCS instead of the AFCE, but even when we lose to them they are still probably going to need another win if we want to lock in the #2

I have wondered what he might have been without losing a lot of mobility with two season ending injuries before he even got started.

            But that happened.

          • Yeah, he got Sep player of the Month, if I remember correctly.

            Just dealing.

Then, well, we all know the rest.

Wasn’t it vs the Cards that he first started self destructing?

            Ugh. The irony.

          • SC Dave

Cutler definitely had more talent, but result…. not sure.

      • I think you have been drinking too much tradewind.

        • willbest

But think about it this way if you are Cleveland. What if you think the QB’s in this draft are crap but you have the next JJ Watt sitting there. You could take JJ Watt and hope to get somebody as talented as Cutler on the open market, but then you are cleveland. Or you could trade for Cutler, still pick up JJ Watt because you know Chicago is drafting a QB

          • The thing is, ONE team is always sold on a QB in the draft, usually two teams for two QBs.

If they don’t like the top QB in the draft, I could see them preferring the other alternative – trading down with a team that believe ins say Kizer for a boatload of picks (that’s been their M.O. anyways) and drafting a QB later, and get a “bridge” for free and cheaper in FA.

Thing is, everybody knows we’re letting Cutler go, so I doubt anyone will trade anything higher than 4rth if anything at all.

          • willbest

Still don’t think its a given we are letting Cutler go. And it would be a conditional pick based on if he is healthy and performs well.

          • That Guy

2013 was the outlier. No good QBs that year, and the league knew it. It was a weak year in general, but we got Kyle Long and I don’t think anyone regrets that. Likewise the Cowboys got Ezekeil Ansa at #5.

Top three that year were: Eric Fisher, Luke Joeckel and Dion Jordan. My takeaway? A bust is a bust at any position.

Still, if there’s a quality starting QB to be had, the Bears should make a move. Cutler caught way more flack than he deserved here, but its time to move on.

I watched the Paul Brown edition of A FOOTBALL LIFE.

The guy basically invented modern pro football AND when HE broke “The Color Line” in pro football, that’s when Branch Rickey figured he could do it in pro baseball. A year or two later.

      • SC Dave

Paul Brown is rarely recognized for that. Good job, Al.

Did you get to see any cool Otto Graham and Jim Brown highlights?

        • AlbertInTucson

Jim Brown looked like a man among boys but I actually saw him play on TV his final season and have had highlights of the ’65 season on super 8 film since the late 60s so I remember what a stud he was.

        • AlbertInTucson

The show makes a point to say “There’s trophies named for Lombardi, Halas & (Lamar) Hunt”, but it was Paul Brown who re-invented the game.

Anyone have an opinion about Fenwick-Plainfield North? (Short summary: Fenwick was winning by 3 with 4th down at their own 15 with 4 sec left. QB throws a pass to no one to run out the clock. Ref calls grounding – probably correct – but allows opponent an untimed down. They use it to kick a game tying FG and win in OT.

Problem is – the rules do not call for an untimed down on a loss of down penalty. IHSA admits the refs screwed up, Fenwick was really the winner, but won’t change the result because another rule says “officials decision is final) Now going to court.

My take – they will lose but the school is right for taking it to court. It’s not a bad call – it is by definition an injustice (misapplication of the “law” and is worth fighting for.

Plainfield in my opinion should forfeit.

    Others may disagree.

    • Huge Bears Penis

      Refs are infallible. Plainfield wins.

Refs for Pope! Oh wait… this wasn’t the Catholic league, was it?

Bad coaching. The QB could have just taken the ball and run out the back of the endzone with it to kill 4 seconds.

      • BillW

Many said the same, including the coach. He said they practice that from the 10 on in. But he felt it risky from the 15 (chance of fumble). Poor decision maybe.

Actually, the coach messed up by not knowing the untimed down wasn’t allowed either.

    • willbest

On a side note, Illinois has 8 tiers of football. That seems excessive to me.

Plainfield should have been forced to give up the game. Now that it’s gone this far, I think the result has to stand or else you have these fucking helicopter parents suing for better grades.

      • BillW

A judge did agree to hear this tomorrow at 9am.

To me its simple. The game was over by rule. Everything that happened after that doesn’t matter any more than if both coaches decided to keep playing for some reason.

    • BerwynBomber

Bad form/precedent for Fenwick to take it to court. The refs made a mistake but so did Fenwick and the latter still had a chance to win the game in OT.

Btw, something similar happened in CFB this year between OK St and CMU. Central was given an extra play and then scored on a nifty hail mary lateral to win the game.

Referees make mistakes and it sucks but appealing decision and results in court is a horrible precedent, and in my mind, also a bit of sore loser-ism.

Should DET have taken their case to court over the Megatron play against us some years back? How about the Cheese getting dicked in SEA during the Fail Mary play?

You lost. it sucks. But you move on. Heck, use the moment to teach the kids that life isn’t always fair and can be full of misfortune.

        nice.

yes now Men and Women are subject to the studio system. Just like in the 1940s when the studios decided who would be seen with who, who was in, who was out, and regimented their lives down to the last detail. I thought Hail, Ceaser did a good job of capturing that era.

        • I haven’t checked that movie out, mainly cuz I’m Clooneyed out.

But yeah, Hollywood is pretty brutal with both men and women, as I found out one time rather unexpectedly.

Me and a chick were strolling through Venice Boardwalk (that scene from the Doors) just minding our own biz, when a guy with headphones came up to us and asked if we wanted to be extras or something in a commercial. Said they would pay us good $

We looked at each other, and said, sure, why not?

So he pulled us aside and was about to start putting make up on us or whatever, and he asks,”How old are you?” right to the girl.

She sorta stalls. A man is not supposed to ask a girl that in the ‘real world’ so I interjected and said I was 36.

To which he responds, “Sorry. We need actors in their 20s cuz that’s our Demo”

Man, I wonder how they could ever make NFL games shorter. Maybe we could just play 3 periods instead of 4 quarters.
    Are these fucking jagoffs serious?

    • BillW

I wonder what the optimum time for a game is? Three hours likely.

I assume there is a specified number of commercial breaks. You subtract that from 3 hours as well as halftime, and figure out how to average the 60 football minutes into that.

A couple of obvious ones are clock always starts at the spot of the ball except within 5 minutes to go in a half (maybe make that 4). Replays “upstairs” (or in NY – with the goal of speeding it like college does. Eliminate kickoffs except at the beginning of each half (sort of like basketball alternate possession). Beyond that, I don’t see anything that doesn’t involve limiting commercials or having in game crawls for advertising.

Or allowing advertising on the field or even uniforms.

      • Make RedZone Conv% Great Again

the answer is just reduce the number of commercials. Anything else should be met with temporary yet complete boycott of 1 week to show the NFL who is boss. It’s us, if we weren’t such huge fucking pussies.

        • BillW

Even the Pats lost with their 3rd backup to the lowly Bills.

      • BillW

There was an idiot on the Tribune blaming Pace for not having an adequate backup. Apparently not remembering and/or not knowing about Hoyer and Shaw.

I responded that the Bears effectively are on their 4th string QB – as you say – and that many teams don’t even have 2 truly NFL level QBs much less 4. But that’s Pace’s fault?

        • Yeah, it would be one thing if Barkley was our 2nd QB, or maybe, maybe even 3rd.

But 4rth? Can’t blame Pace for that.

What is he suppose to do, pay $3M to a 4rth QB on the PS squad?

Even if one wanted a “developmental” QB, that would also have meant no Shaw most likely, and I think we all want to see what Shaw has first b4 dumping him.

You and Shady better hope I beat NB now lol

      • Weed Superman (GP)

It’s a two horse race to the finish.

You two have 170ppg teams. Shady and I have 130ppg teams.

        • At least I know I got to 9-2 the old fashioned way.

Through draft and savvy waiver wire pick ups.

I think you and Shady still have chances.

Shady beat me, and you came ever so close.

But NB pretty much has a dream team now, so will take some Desert Fox shit to win.

          • That Guy

I got to today the same way. Should have given you Jamaal Charles when you offered a trade a while back and prolly should have pushed a bit harder when I traded Rodgers, but otherwise I’ve been right there with you.

But you’ve got a rough lineup to beat. Zeke is, I think, the #1 fantasy player in the league. You’ve got two of the top 6 QBs. You’ve got arguably the top D. And your Flex RB just replaced my Flex RB due to injury.

          • I was debating between Prosise and Rawls, and almost got both, but ultimately picked the right one.

            But let’s face it.

You were given #1Wr and #5Qb for Bench fodder.

That’ll be tough to beat going forward.

I kinda feel bad for 505 cuz he just got off a great close victory over Artoo to keep his hope alive, only to be crushed by the FF feed :O

          • That Guy

He’s also been on a tear as of late. Not looking too strong, but as I said, he’s got a few days to try to make his own moves.

      • That Guy

Butch’s team is pretty stacked, no doubt. He got Mike Evans in a similarly lopsided trade. But we’ll see how it all plays out.

        • I don’t think that trade was that lopsided.

Sac needed to win last week. He was looking at starting a QB like Goff (a whopping 8 point performance). Alex Smith gave him 23 points and viable QB option going forward.

Chris Ivory is the Jags main back, and put up 16 points last week. Only thing is, Sac benched him.

Hopkins is a WR2, I admit, but still has upside any given week.

He should’ve had 100yds and a TD last night, but it got negated by a horrible call.

Hopkins still gave Sac 7, which is the floor.

Those gave him a chance to win, and options going forward, but his don’t think he’ll be able to catch up now with or without Evans.

          • That Guy

I can make the same argument about the trade for Brees. Johnny wasn’t going to make the playoffs, but if he wants to be competitive, I gave him three start-quality players. Sproles might be out a week, but he’s a quality RB2 or flex guy. He’ll probably put up 10-20 points a week more with those three than with Brees and whatever the waiver wire could have gotten him at this point.

The Jones trade was goofy, but again, I didn’t even make that offer. And Crowell was a good flex guy till a couple weeks ago. If you believe he rebounds, he’s a good option.

You also have to remember, at this point in the season, the league is so injury riddled that the waiver wire is pretty much dry.

          • Weed Superman (GP)

I released Ivory from my team for nothing, that was a bad move.

But I managed the shit out of computer drafted team to this point.

          • I could see the logic to that though.

            The Jags are shit.

But SOMEONE’s gotta get those touches, and Yeldon has looked like hot garbage (and is now inj)

That’s why I took a flier on him b4 trading him.

Yeah, you fought back thanks to getting all my sloppy seconds, esp Ajayi!

God, talk about a dumbass move, but at that time I just didn’t trust Gase.

To Gase’s credit, he admitted he was wrong with the HB. One week to late for me though! SMH

          • Weed Superman (GP)

The rule of thumb in FF, and the theme of the trades today:

There are only so many slots. Having ONE guy capable of going off for 50 is much better than 3 guys that can deliver you 15.

That’s why I don’t want 3 guys for AJ Green. Of course, Green is a WR1 and he goes down on me, that and Gronk are the bad lucks I didn’t need that probably sink me, but the rule always stands.

Trade 3 WR2s for one Wr1. Every time.

          • That Guy

Its true. Though some positions lend themselves to playing matchups better than others. D/ST in paritcular can often be played by betting against certain offenses.

          • Weed Superman (GP)

the interesting thing about a 2 QB league, is that it’s QB that best favors matchups on a week to week.

In a 2QB league, there are no QBs on the wire worth shit. So it’s hard to flip the wire for the other spots – makes it harder

          • That Guy

Would not mind at all doing a 1 QB league next year. 1 QB to start, 1 on the bench. And 10 teams just like this year. Makes the waiver wire more interesting.

Would also like to try a legacy league given we’ve got a regular group every year now.

          • I was thinking of legacy league. Might do it, but it’s hard to get guys in and out every year, but I think we have a good group going forward.

The reason I do two QB is because I think it reflects the NFL.

In the NFL, teams have to start guys like Tannenhill or Bortles.

Think FF should be like that too.

Also, affects drafting. If so worried about QBs, then pay up and make sure.

If not, gamble and save $ for other positions.

In the end, FF is about player evaluation.

Cousins/Carr could’ve crashed and burned, and I would’ve been fucked.

But I evaluated them correctly and got both for $3 combined, when other teams went with more “proven” guys like Rothlisburg or Luck

          • Weed Superman (GP)

2QB plus a bid-based wire makes for a harder “game”

It would be interesting to implement the bid wire with a fixed dollar amount, while making the wire far more juicy with a 1 QB league.

If you really wanted to change the flavor, shorten the bench to prevent stashing

          • What do you mean, a fixed dollar amount?

Each team is given $100 to start the season, but you mean bids can be capped?

I’ll see next season. Not even sure if that’s an option.

Shortening benches and playing with1QB would almost be like playing in 8 team leagues.

At that point, everyone has a #1QB, two #1WRs, two #1RBs, then you got like kickers, TEs and Ds basically winning matches instead of real players.

As JJ Watt said in The League “That’s weaksauce!”

          • Weed Superman (GP)

I have some amount of money now – I forget how much I have left – and I bid each week. Most of the shit pickups bid at $1, but sometimes there is bidding for players week to week. That’s a bid wire with a fixed amount. Just do what you are doing now.

          • Just depends.
I’ve pretty much been riding Cousins/Carr the whole season except during byes.

But yes, you do have to guess correctly in the draft at QB.

But, hey, you got Dak, so that’s been gold so far, esp when compared to paying a fuckton for Vadgers, etc.

          • Depends on the team though.

If you got only one real HB, and two WRs like Trac, maybe you do.

For instance, if you have Gore (and no other RB really), Antonio Brown and Julio,
wouldn’t you consider Forte (RB1/2) and Pryor (WR2) or Fitz (Wr 1/2)?

Sure, Julio might blow up for 22, but Forte will give a floor of 15 (and can also blow up for 39ish), and WR2 can get you like 12 on a weekly basis.

            Depends on team and needs.

Also, WR1 are a lot more volatile week to week.

ODB was shut down by the Bears.

            The Bears!

          • Weed Superman (GP)

I agree that WR is more volatile than RB, hence you see this year more guys using RBs in their flex slot.

The depends on the team argument misses my initial point: teams that are strong are looking to dump their mid level WR2 and RB2 for RB1s, and teams that get into bad luck situations will often flip their best player to fill out the roster. It’s a specious argument, they know they have hit hard times and so they “cash out” and – often – stop caring. Unless it’s Johnny, which is the same every year, a 0-4 start and a semi-quit status the rest of the way.

It’s Trump’s America: Rich get richer, poor get poorer.

How to Commish against that? Well, you could move up the trade deadline. Allowing trades in Week 10 is a bit iffy.

          • I was thinking of moving up deadline. Might do it to this week come next season after these transactions, but honestly, never really had that lopsided trades b4, or Johnny obviously cashing out and fucking you guys as a side effect.

I think the rich get rich argument is true, but in FF, that has a lot to do with the ‘rich” being better lol

You picked up Ajaji for like $2. Anyone else could’ve easily got him for cheap, but didn’t.
That made you richer, which you earned.

now if u wanted to trade Ajayi for a top WR or QB, or combo, then that makes you ‘richer’ only cuz you made the right choice to begin with.

That’s kinda the way I see it. It’s def more of a meritocracy.

            Everyone gets same draft/wire budget.

Loser no longer get first dibs off the wire.

With only 10 teams more of a pool on who to guess on (as such, more skill).

Injuries are the wild card, but planes can land on the rich or po.

One Bears comment. For those who think Cutler is terrible; look at how much worse it is when Matt Barkley and David Fales are your best options. There are teams that start the season like that. Cutler can be bad, but he isn’t that bad.

    • It’s not either/or though.

Cutler SHOULD be better than a 4rth/5th QB who are close to being out of the league.

      The real question is –

how much better did the Bears look under Cutler ($15M) vs a high-end backup like Hoyer ($2M)

I think we all know the answer to that.

      • willbest

Hoyer is a good backup. But a backup.

          • willbest

Hoyer got paid $2 million as the presumptive backup to Jay Cutler. Hoyer got paid $5 million last year when he was going to compete for the starting job.

          • You can’t cherry pick years. If so, I could ask how much better is a $20M Cutty over a $5M Hoyer.

Same difference. Talking about this year, not years of yore, or going forward.

Fact that hoyer will likely get paid more, and Cutler less only proves my point that the difference aint much in the eyes of the NFL

          • BerwynBomber

I raised that same question after 2014 in regard to Sanchize and Cutler. That was the year we paid Jay $21M and he (along with most of the Bears) stunk on ice. Statistically, Sanchez actually had a better year (and won more games) and he made something like $2M.

That’s one of the problems with Jay. Any given year a quality journeyman will outperform him.

        • That Guy

Plus, you are assuming that there is a proper starting QB available on the market. Most years there isn’t anyone good in FA.

Its wierd, teams tend to hang on to QBs and Left Tackles – premium positions to be sure. But top players at other positons, particularly pass rushers always seem to hit the market.

          • It’s rare for good Olinemen in general to hit FA.
They tend to be very loyal the team and each other. Something odd has to happen, like with Sitton, or with an Olineman just wanting to get paid, but I would say that out of all the positions, they are the least greedy and more team oriented than the other units.

I mean, look at Joe Thomas. Jeesh. Guy should get a medal or something.

          • That Guy

Thomas is ticked off this year. Not because his team is losing – because the team let good players go in FA. He’s a big loyalty guy and he’ll get nothing for it. Maybe he makes it to Canton, but that’s a tough sell for a lineman.

    • BerwynBomber

Cutler being better than the fourth and fight guys on the depth chart is kind of expected. Especially when he we once made him the highest paid player in the league.

            those are the best

    • Further proof Trac was hosting a fire sale.

      Great for you and 505.

Not so much for Shady, GP and I.

Not sure how much he has left over.

      • That Guy

Nobody is preventing anyone else from proposing trades folks.

Although it is worth mentioning that there is a function to allow the league to block perceived unfair trades that we used to have. I’m not advocating bring that back, but I am advocating a legacy format.

Legacy format would minimize the incentive to trade away good players even during a down year.

        • Last night I proposed Forte/Pryor

But Trac decided Crowell/Wallace for Julio Jones.

In no universe is Wallace an upgrade over Jones, or is Crowell a better HB than Forte.

And Brady/AB for Stafford/Allen, or Brees for Borltes?

          Cmon now.

          But no matter.

I’m not about to start blocking trades at least this season.

Next season I’ll just cut off trade deadlines on this monday.

Ender is still in championship contention too

          • That Guy

I actually don’t favor cutting off trades this early. Like I said, I actually made a reasonable offer for Jones before the silliness started. There are still deals to be done late in the season, especially with injuries. Plus, this far in the waiver wire is pretty worthless.

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

Hahahaha. Those trades were the most fun I’ve had since the season began. Now I can say I have two vested interests in 2 teams still in the game. It’s like they’re my minions now.

My money is on NB taking it all.

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

That trade would have helped you more than me and let’s be honest here, only an idiot would trade away there best player on their team. Uh..wait…who did I trade again?

I think I read somewhere that the cops arrested someone at Ford Field who was doing the same.

Edit. Here’s an older one, but I could’ve sworn a more recent laser shine happened

Apparently the green laser was pretty visible on TV. I haven’t seen video of it.

    FF notes:

Its revenge week. I will crush Sauron’s left nut.

I’m thinking of inserting Martin vs Chickens into the flex position in place of Howard vs Titans. Thoughts on that move?

Concerning the 2QB league – I love it, but I really really would like to be able to have a 4th QB on the roster. Sure it makes draft day crazy (I can imagine a few bastard moves), but I wouldn’t have to make the stupid decision to replace Big Ben so early. Dropping Rothlisbooger was by far my biggest mistake. But at the time, I had NO choice.

    • Could’ve put Roth on IR slot and picked up another QB for the meanwhile.

In 2 QB leagues, gotta take byes into consideration during drafts.

There were a lot of combos I liked but couldn’t have cuz of byes, which did influence me getting Carr/Cousins/RG3 trio (last not so smart)

You’re going to crush Trac, BTW, since he essentially gave his roster to Bears 505 and NB.

Your chance might come down to points total though. You gotta win last two games AND make up some ground on points to get in.

Shady-or-GP will lose this wk, so should give you a real chance.

      • That Guy

4 QBs x 10 teams means you need 40 players worth drafting to make it fair. There 32 QBs starting at any given time, plus maybe 3-4 others worth drafting. What happens is that someone only has 2 viable starters, one starter goes down, and his season is over. Maybe now that trading has become a bit more common in this league it wouldn’t be so bad, but with a 4 QB limit, there’s very little incentive to trade QBs.

3 QBs x 10 teams means there’s always somebody on the waiver wire who’s at least going to play.

        • That was my rationale.

For instance, I picked up Kap for one bye, came through.
PIcked up Alex Smith next bye, not so much.

Just adds another layer of intrigue.

“DaBearsBlog @dabearsblog If Jay’s Chicago career is over, think of how it ended.
    Brilliance vs. Minnesota.
    Nightmare vs. Tampa.
    Injury.
    That sums it up.”

The “brilliance” thing has been a bit overcooked in regard to the MIN game. (His QBR was a pedestrian 45 that night.) But yeah, very solid/good if nothing else, and yup, the three game stretch is a perfect synopsis of his Bears career.

Also, if this is indeed Jay’s end (and I’m dubious as I sometimes think Cutler will outlast even the McCaskeys), his signature play from this season will be the Conte pick six. On the flip side, his last game against the Cheese will have been a win, which is odd considering his otherwise dismal record against them.

Ah well. I’m sure they’ll be tons more said/written about him if indeed the second opinion confirms the first. For now a toast to Waffle’s Cutty6 Steakhouse idea. If nothing else, Cutty was never boring, even if the last couple of years have seemed (to a few of us, at least) unnecessary and tiresome.
