Bah, Sauron got beat by a midget. Wuss.

      “The Purge”.

      • Sauron’s right eyeball

The Bible says we are all born in sin. Eye disagree.

        • CanadaBear

One of my best friend’s (may he R.I.P.) mother passed years ago and at the funeral this ancient monsignor went to great lengths to tell everyone that she was a sinner and how hard it was to get into heaven and all that horseshit. By the end I wanted to go up and punch that fat fucker right in the mouth. My friend’s mother was practically a saint. As sweet and nice as anybody’s mother could be. That’s one of a million reasons why I hate religion.

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

            She obviously wasn’t a tither.

That most of football this week is on Saturday is a bit of a mindjob. I didn’t realize the Packers are going to get 2 extra days rest on the Lions. What fucking bullshit. If I were the Lions organization and the Packers beat Vikings on Saturday, I would forfeit since winning MNF would be meaningless. Well there is probably a rule against that, but my starters would sure as shit be resting.

Giants v. Eagles Thursday Night. Not feeling it. Giants are beasting. Man whatever happened to the NFCLeast from two years ago, if the 5-9 Eagles are the worst team in the division.

Sunday Funday. NFLN locking up the game that is likely to determine the AFCN (Ravens v. Steelers), and then a game that will have basically no ramifications for SNF (Donks v. Chiefs).

    • BerwynBomber

I am assuming most of the Mon and Thus games are wash at the end. In fact, because GB is a bigger draw they probably get dicked around more with scheduling because of their frequent appearance in “island” and “national” games.

DET just happened to get their Mon game at the end of the year. Happens.

Btw, it won’t be meaningless if the Cheese loses to MIN. In fact, if that happens the scheduling Gods will have shined on DET as DAL may not have much to play for either (if NYG loses). Hence, DET could clinch Mon night against team that is mailing it in.

      • Johnnywad

It’s all nearly irrelevant anyway. No NFCN team passes the eyeball test as a playoff threat. GB and DET are both easy outs in my book. They both just squeaked by the Bears JV.

        • willbest

I don’t know, I wouldn’t rule GB at home out against anybody. They showed you as much when they made Seattle look like little bitches. Are they going to go into Dallas or Seattle and win? Probably not, but then you can’t count Rodgers out. I could easily see them making the NFCC

        • BerwynBomber

Agreed. DET to me looks like the more rounded team. GB, of course, has Rodgers. But that Cheese D is bottom half of the league bad.

          • willbest

And held the seachickens to 10 points in GB. The NFCN is looking like the 4 seed. Which means they are going to draw the Giants. I know they Giants were just getting going, but they (ed. Packers) already beat them once in Green Bay.

          • BerwynBomber

That was one game. A couple weeks earlier they looked like the Mel Tucker D of 2014 against WAS. They have little to no pass rush, their ILBs still aren’t all that and their young CBs suck.

You are irrationally concerned about the GB. DET still holds the decisive upper hand to win the division. In fact, they could win it this weekend. GB cannot.

          • willbest

They can only win it with a win plus a GB loss. That is tall order when they play Dallas, and GB hosts the Vikings (who haven’t beaten a .500+ team since week 5).

          • BerwynBomber

If PHI beats NYG tonight, DAL will have NOTHING to play for Mon night.

DET is in the total catbird seat. They have more ways to win than GB. Plus, they host the finale at Ford. If they gag it, it will be their own fault.

        • CanadaBear

Unless they get the perfect opponent, gotta agree. When the Loins and Fudgie fans comment about how great they are, I usually remind them the Loins almost lost to the Bears twice and the Fudgies almost lost last week, and the Bears stink.

        • Huge Bears Penis

It should not be a surprise that they both squeaked by the Bears, we are really close to being good. We are only need like 10 players and we would be really good

          • Johnnywad

10 players or 1 active Braverman? Might just need Daniel.

          • willbest

I think it is more like 7

QB, TE, FS, NT, P, CBx2

Barth is 2/3 on on-side kicks and he seems to be over his FG yips. He isn’t elite but he is functional. Amos is okay as a SS if we have a competent person next to him and our line and ILB’s aren’t injured.

          • Huge Bears Penis

no Barth and Amos both suck. cut them!

    • AlbertInTucson

We get the Redskins on a Saturday off of a Monday.

      • willbest

I don’t like that either. I want to lose valiantly at the last minute due to a stupid coaching decision.

        • MB30SD

Exactly the way I like it.

That way we also have plenty of coaching shit show to can WaB

        • AlbertInTucson

Local D.C. media is BBQing the Redskins’ staff for a RAFT of coaching decisions.

  • SC Dave

“Isn’t that why government exists in the first place… to take care of the most vulnerable”

    Um, no.

    • Sauron’s right eyeball

To punish the guilty and protect the innocent. I do have a question though. If justice is blind, how do they know who’s who?

      See how eye did that?

      • The one’s murdering, raping and stealing is a good start.

Of course, the white collar ones are a lil harder to imprison.

        • Sauron’s right eyeball

It goes way above the white collar Butch. I suggest you start with the red carpet.

        • But they shouldn’t be.

I have a very interesting take on the Ole Red, White and Blue. It’s a long and winding road. Just ask Sir Paul.

          • On THAT I think all parties can agree, except the ones in charge naturally.

    • Scharfinator

The more responsibility we give the government, the more power they need to do those things, which makes the inevitable fall into corruption have a significantly more profound effect on the populace.

  • Malice Halice

Jus read on nfln that Bosa has more qb disruptions within 10 games than any other player in the past decade. I kinda understand why he did what he did this preseason. I’m still a Floyd fan tho. Hope I get his jersey this xmas!

    • SC Dave

QB disruptions is not an objective statistic.

      • Malice Halice

Is it not a factor in the game atleast? Floyd got more sacks I believe but (for shits in giggles) wouldn’t it be better of you had a guy who can get in the head of a qb every game than a guy who can actually take a qb down more seldomly than disruption ?

        • Pretty sure Shea got a lot of “disruptions” as he flew by the QB.

No doubt Bosa is better though.

          • Malice Halice

Lol I guess disruption is a vague term. They made it sound so potent.

          • MB30SD

he’s a beast. a total beast. I thought he’d be a bust… dude is in the backfield almost erra play.

          • DaMurph

i didnt think he would be this good either

          • Same here.

I thought he was an Alex Brown-Ongunleye type.

            Guess he’s a lil more.

          • Captain Obvious

Pretty sure many of McClellin’s disruptions were from the QB busting out laughing as Shea ran in circles in coverage.

          • Huge Bears Penis

            well done!!!! I approve.

    • AlbertInTucson

Maybe if Fangio would turn Floyd loose on QBs…?

    • He did what he did because of precedent. SD was being cheapskates and trying to delay paying his bonus and not give him contract offsets.

Every top 5 pick for a decade has gotten at least one of those 2 in their contract. So he held out until they gave him one of those 2.

He was 100% in the right there. SD was 100% in the wrong. I will NEVER understand why fans inherently side with the billionaire owners over players sticking up for themselves.

      • willbest

Because the billionaires have the PR machine. And all the fans see is the player not playing.

        • CanadaBear

Mostly a breakdown in critical thinking.

          • Huge Bears Penis

them dumb jocks should just accept what little pittance the owners offer and just play.

    Christian McCaffrey.

He has two things going against him already:

    1) He’s a running back.

    2) He’s WHITE running back.

He was terrific at Stanford running, receiving and returning, but I don’t see “1st Rounder” in his future. Especially with so many examples of finding a great or very good back, like a Jordan Howard or a Matt Forte or a Terrell Davis, in rounds 2 – 5.

McCaffrey’s not Zeke Elliot and, as far as caucasians go, he’s not the next John Riggins.

The last white running back taken in the first round of the NFL Draft?
Penn State’s, John Cappelletti. Rams, 1974. (Yes, I had to look it up).

That’s 40+ years ago, boys and girls. I still lived in the Chicago area.

That same Cappelletti article produced THIS tidbit:

The last white back to gain 1,000 yards in the NFL?
    Craig James, New England, 1985.

Craig James. I can STILL see The Danimal stripping the ball from him in SB XX.

    • AlbertInTucson

Last white guy to lead the NFL in rushing: Jim Taylor, Green Bay, 1962.

Dickie Post of the Chargers led the AFL in 1969 with less than 900 yards.

      • Irish Sweetness

Let’s not forget the great Peyton Hillis, who rushed for over 2,800 yards in his illustrious career!

        • Sauron’s right eyeball

He made a money grab and then was summarily painted off the canvas. Hmm…

          • MB30SD

Exactly the way I want to do it.

Thanks for my check… Now forward ALL my calls to 1-800-EAT-SHIT

    • willbest

Lets say he falls to the bottom of the second, he is still guaranteed $2 million. If he injures himself and falls off the draft board he gets nothing, and if somebody takes a 7th round flier on him its only $60k

      • AlbertInTucson

Oh, I have NO problem with him protecting his interests, even if its not going to be first round money.

The NCAA sure ain’t lookin’ out for them.

      • AlbertInTucson

You think he is a 2nd round prospect?

        • Captain Obvious

Someone will pull the trigger on him early. He’s like the Tim Tebow of RBs. Missing some tools to do the job in the NFL, but someone will look at his college game and think he can be a star.

          • AlbertInTucson

The Tebow experience will not help McCaffrey’s situation.

          • willbest

I don’t know, he generated a lot of eyeballs.

    • Peyton Hillis. 1,177 for the Browns in 2010. Got himself on the cover of Madden for that one.

      • AlbertInTucson

That star burned brightly, but briefly.

13 TDs to go with that thousand yard season.

        • AlbertInTucson

He had FF coaches scrambling but, a lot of high picks were wasted the following season.

      • DaCoaches Mustache

I drafted that piece of white dogshit the year after in fantasy and he sucked balls. I remember reading reports that he was going to join the army rangers or someshit half way through that season. Fuck Peyton Hillis in the balloon knot.

FYI, this also works on random women. Find a homely looking woman briefly talk to her, and by briefly I mean anytime you walk by like on the way to the bathroom just say ‘Hey’ and maybe wink. When you are ready to leave, walk up to her hand her your bill with a fake phone number and say “Do me a favor and take care of this for me, my numbers there call me later. Thanks so much.” Then walk out.

      • MB30SD

        You are a bastard… I love it

  • Malice Halice

They petty on nfln for not including Matt Barkley on the up n coming qb’s but they got pax Lynch, Tom savage and fuckin Bortles. Atleast we got 2 rooks in the top 10. 3 if u include Cody. Could’ve been 4 if we got Braverman involved earlier. Did we just give up on rookie secondary or what?

    • AlbertInTucson

      Bortles?

      Clearly has regressed, no?

      • Malice Halice

        Exactly

      • Bortles suuuuuuucks

      • BearDown100393

The English will grow to love him.

  • BerwynBomber

Caught the “Elway to Marino” 30/30 documentary on Netflix last night. Didn’t know that the Bears had been a potential trading partner with the Colts and the Raiders in the Elway sweepstakes.

Anyway, worth checking out. Like some other 30/30 flicks, seemed liked thirty minutes of material bloated into sixty, but definitely a memorable draft as the ’83 first round is considered the godfather of modern draft when it comes to public interest and eventual marketing. And what a first round it was: 6 HoFers selected.

    • beninnorcal

Is that one from a couple years ago? Pretty sure I remember seeing it.

      • BerwynBomber

Yeah, I think it’s been around for awhile. Jimbo Covert is interviewed in it. He seems pretty on point/squared away. Dude’s a CEO or something.

  • AlbertInTucson

So, Duke’s “Coach K” suspends Grayson Allen for his 3rd, blatant, tripping incident.

But FIRST he lets Allen throw a hissy on the bench and then PUTS HIM BACK IN THE GAME?

    • BearDown100393

      Its called ODB treatment

      • AlbertInTucson

The ACC SHOULD step in and handle this.

But since it’s Duke, they won’t.

    • BerwynBomber

K has always struck me as one of the phony “educators” indicative of NCAA hypocrisy.

      • AlbertInTucson

I understand he was kind of a dick on Dan Patrick this morning.

He was completely arrogant post game last night.

        “I’m a teacher!”

        Blah, blah, blah.

Coach, the “Teaching Moment” was when he came to the bench and threw that self-serving hissy fit. That’s when you should have told him to take his sorry butt to the locker room and stay there.

Hypocrite behavior on your part, Coach K.

        K for KLOWN.

        • CanadaBear

I don’t watch BBall but I saw that clip on the highlights. What a tool bag. You’d think somebody would just slap the baby and be done with it. If any of us acted like that as children I’m pretty sure mom or dad would have given us an attitude adjustment.

          • AlbertInTucson

            Couple of things.

Pretty obvious the kid has some clinical emotional issues that need to be dealt with.

Also, this is the THIRD blatant incident like this with him.

Duke & Coach K chose to ignore the first two.

          • CanadaBear

No doubt he has emotional issues but he doesn’t seem to be working on them at this time!!!!!!! What a shock a big time college program would enable athletes. You’d think they would get him in some program so he stops embarrassing everyone (esp himself).

          • AlbertInTucson

Well, treatment might cause him to miss some playing time which might hurt Duke’s chances for another basketball championship.

            Priorities.

That is rather glowing I think. I am excited for the kid. Not sold on him as a QB1, but he certainly should be competing for QB1. Worst case scenario is he has earned himself 2-3 million a year for the next decade being a backup.

      • AlbertInTucson

Well, he has been 10 times better that what we usually get from a guy who was 3rd on the depth chart at QB.

    • “I feel like I’m capable of a lot more,” Barkley said. “And the glaring

Does anyone know for sure if Barkley is an RFA or UFA next year? this article says he is a restricted FA, I have looked at several other sites and some sites have him as a UFA while others have him as a RFA.

      • He’s an RFA. He only has 3 years of service time, which makes him RFA. You need 4 to be UFA.

        • Huge Bears Penis

that’s what i thought too but this is his 4th year, he has no stats for 2015 with Arizona but I believe he was on the active roster.

        • Irish Sweetness

Why do Spotrac name him a UFA? He does have 4 seasons in the NFL. ’13/’14/’15/’16.

    • AlbertInTucson

“I know there’s nothing holding me back.”

Kind of him not to add “… except for 20 or 30 dropped passes.”

  • I know Tom Brady will win it. But if you’re asking me to choose an MVP, it’s not close. It’s Odell Beckham Jr. – Jeff

Didn’t the Pats win with 2 other QBs?

I think Stafford and Dak really have to be in that mix (even Brees)

In non-qb field, Murray and David Johnson who have been carrying their team for most of the year.

    • BerwynBomber

Yeah, not a fan of Brady as MVP this year. He missed four games due to a suspension and the Pats were winning without him. He is the best QB in the league — pretty remarkable given his age — but the aforementioned facts should be enough to preclude him.

Actually, Rodgers could make an end of the season charge if he continues his recent play and the Chesse make the post-season.

My choice? The DAL O-line. Short of that, I might vote Ryan.

  • BerwynBomber

DAL and DET are loving this. Wonder if DAL would start Romo W17? Do they still have Sanchize?

  • MB30SD

can someone please explain to me how in thee fuck are the giants good again?!

And that was INT #14 on the season for Eli.

      Same as Wentz.

  • BerwynBomber

Malcolm Jenkins is a badass. Kind of a Peanut-level type: not quite good enough to be Pro Bowl or All-Pro, but a helluva player nonetheless.

Wish we would have made a run for him when he was on the market back in the day. He was affordable too.

  • BerwynBomber

Eli is 7th on all-time completion list?

    Top six:

And the not killing anybody streak ends at 4. No Christmas miracle for the Windy City.

  • Irish Sweetness

So ti looks like Cleveland are drafting Garrett. If SF are ahead of us they’ll take Trubisky/Kizer .
That leaves us with Jonathan Allen (if someone trades up with JAX to get the other QB). Any fans?

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbp5ghNZrOk

    • MB30SD

Allen, peppers, trubinsky or kizer, the best OT, the best WR, the best CB.

We’ll have our pick of the lot my Irish brother.

Please pace don’t get Fucking cute… Continue to look solid as fuck and just pick the best one of the lot.

My vote goes for peppers. Time to address the D backfield after 10 years.

      • AlbertInTucson

We need some Peppers to spice up that D-Backfield.

        • MB30SD

          Exactly Al.

      • Irish Sweetness

Jamal Adams gets a lot of love too, I see.

That’s really high to draft strong safeties though. Allen would fit very nicely onto that line with Goldman and Hicks. And the DBs we have just look better and better. That’s a nice front 7 right there.

        • MB30SD

I wouldn’t be sad about that move at all. Really we can’t go wrong unless pace pics outside of that group of 7-10ish guys I listed on the last thread. Any one of those guys will be a major upgrade.

I wouldn’t even be angry with even the best OT (I’ll have to look up his damn name… think he’s from SC) or WR. I mean, we’re in the cat-bird seat man. Picking top 5 in erra round? sheeeeit. We HAVE to get better this off season.

And if pace does what he’s done the last couple years (has it been two or just one?), we should be bad ass next year. He’s a beast in FA too.

I have VERY high expectations for this off season.

          • CanadaBear

It’s been 2 years. I like Pace too but keep in mind, he picked White and that hasn’t been a joy to behold.

        • Just read his stats on WalterFootball.com – doesn’t exactly jump off the page.

3 passes defended with ONE int.

I’d have to look at his tape. Could be that the QBs don’t even throw his way, but those aren’t exactly killer stats.

      • My theory is we need PLAYMAKERS, not just bodies.

We need to get the player who fucking DOMINATED in college, who just made opponents look like boys.

Who gets us amped looking at the tape.

If that’s a CB, S, OT, WR, shit, even ILB (no gaurantee Trevathan returns the same), so be it.

Just target these baddass mofos while getting as many picks as possible.

        • Sauron’s right eyeball

          Trade up?

          • If we’re at #3-4 and can trade up for Garrett, I say go for it.
The Browns have already shown they love trading down.

            Then it becomes philosophical.

Do we want more depth, or more playmakers?

I go for the latter. Guys like Von Miller, Julius Peppers, Even Clowney (took a lil due to inj) have proven they’re worth their cost. They upgrade the entire D.

I see Garrett in that stratosphere

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

Eye trust you but let me first verify. Hee hee

          • MB30SD

I also see peppers in a unit that’s been totally disregarded and neglected for 1-+ years. So he’s more of a SS… who cares, the dude is a men among boys (like me here). Get him if they’re asking too much for garrett… which they always do for the #1 pick.

          • This is Eric Berry’s college highlights.

One does not resemble the other

Ps. Not to take anything off Berry, who’s a total S-T-U-D.

      • Sauron’s right eyeball

And the Chicago Bears with their 1st pick trade down with Tampa Bay for a bag of balls.

I’ll move to Canada if this happens.

        • MB30SD

          get yo paaapahs ready yuden

          • Peppers will slip. Can almost guarantee that.

Walterfootball has already knocked him down from top 5 to somewhere in the teens.

    • 505Bears

I say stick with Allen. I wonder with Alabama players, especially interior players, but he is legit. No to either QB. Gotta build the team from the Dline/Oline.

      • To pick a 5tech in the top 5, he must be dominant. Like brute strength and explosiveness, a guy who will be able to push the pocket back.

I wonder if Allen can in the NFL.

He might be better suited in a 4-3.

        • willbest

Agreed drafting a 3-4 DE in the top 5 is insane unless he is a beast. You are going to be paying him $6 mil a year which is top dollar for the position. It’s like drafting RBs early, they better be special.

          • Yup. is Allen better than Hicks?

            Probably not.

Is he better than Unrein. Yes, but that’s not saying much.

5 Techs coming out fo the draft must be monsters, IMO.

          • MB30SD

            agree

    • Just our luck, the ONE year the Browns don’t pick the worst QB will be the year we’re in the top 5.

I checked out Allen’s highlights. He looks fundamentally sound, and athletic (saw the C on him, so must have intangibles) but he doesn’t look particularly explosive or dominant.

Allen is also listed as 6’3 290. Isn’t that Sutton’s size?

Seems a bit of a tweener – not disruptive enough as a 4-3 DT (see Aaron Donald) and not strong/girthy enough for a 3-4 DE (See Calais Campbell).

And like someone else pointed out, from Bama.

Dunno. That’s my first initial impression. he didn’t wow me like Garrett.

Walterfooball’s mocking him to go right b4 us at #3 to none other than the 9ers too.

Goldman to IR. Damn, have they ever had so many?

    • Prolly just saving him. We need another NT anyways so might as well start the search

      • willbest

Pace’s 2015 draft is looking like dog shit. White, Goldman, Grasu can’t get on the field. Langford and Amos are JAGs and Tayo is already gone.

Also his vet FA was brutal: MacDonald, Rolle, ducasse, royal, porter, McPhee, jenkins.

He did land Meredith and Callahan in UDFA which prevents his off season from being labeled terribad.

But when you realize the lack of productivity we got from these guys this year (the ones we kept anyway) its unsurprising the team sucked. Emery left us nothing and Pace hasn’t added all that much

        • MB30SD

You are bru-tal on this. Brutal.

3 years to truly judge a draft class, isn’t that the accepted mark. And injuries are his fault. My goodness, now I really hate him. He had a Fucking crystal ball and STILL picked those guys?!?!

Come on counselor… You’re logic is slipping in your old age. Oh, and he didn’t do this year’s offseason who saw us getting the two best ilbs on the market and a shitload of other talent… Oh right, he knew about tres injury and forsaw Freeman’s PED use too. Damn him!!

          Smmfhayd

          • willbest

Da fuk? Whitehair and Howard have already replaced 2 of those guys. Cam should replace a 3rd. Goldman missed 4 games last year going in and out of them with injury and will miss 10 this year. So that just leaves Amos who has started every game for 2 years, and you have evaluated him plenty.

Take your crayon and cross Pace’s name off the top of that draft board and write Emery on top and try looking at the class that way. It will make you sick.

          • Johnnywad

Now you don’t like the Goldman pick?

          • willbest

I liked the Goldman pick when it was made. I don’t fault him for that. This is an evaluation of him after 2 seasons. He is a quality player when he is on the field, but he has trouble staying on the field. That he is more injured this year than last year is a bad trend, and a prudent course of action would be to find another NT as an insurance policy.

          • MB30SD

So that’s on the s&c team right… Pace can’t foresee injuries unless they were there in college man.

          • Irish Sweetness

Grasu was the Center. Whitehair was pressed into service there. Intersesting to see if he gets left there, or goes into the mix at guard.

          • willbest

You don’t pay sitton or long what we are to be in rotation.

          • MB30SD

Like you said above… He didn’t have his team, didn’t what he could with what he had… Too many injuries to say yet maings… And you can’t foresee injuries.

I’m more than willing to give him the 3 years to see how his first two classes went.

Tre, Freeman (who’s a monster), Hicks, McFee, Hoyer the destroyer your fav!!!

Dude those guys are all A+ players… Can’t charge him with our injury luck.

        • BerwynBomber

          What was wrong with Porter?

          • willbest

Nothing. He is a serviceable CB contrary to Irish’s ravings. But when that is the highlight of your FA class… shurdder

          • BerwynBomber

            Fair enough.

          • Irish Sweetness

What does serviceable mean? As soon as a receiver gets by him, that’s it. You won’t find any highlight videos on him this year. He’s done. Why people choose not to see that, I don’t know. The coaches will see it…tape doesn’t lie and you won’t see him start next season. He was good, he’s not now.

          • Irish Sweetness

            Porter can’t run.

  • MB30SD

    DaBearsBlog @dabearsblog
19 players on IR is insane. Couple w/8 games missed by Alshon/Freeman (two of team’s 6 best players this year) & you know why Fox returns.

Fucking HATE to read this, but I know it’s true. Fox is coming back no matter what, 20 guys on IR (Many starters) is just too much of a valid excuse not to… even though we know who fox is, and next year will be the same… although if we stay healthy and Pace has as strong an off season as the last, we’ll def win at least 8 games. Even with a fucking zombie at HC.

Man, Gase should be our HC right now with a young/aggressive McDaniels type at OC. But alas, we’re the chicago fucking bears and the more things change, the more they stay the same up top. sigh. We have a real shot with pace at GM, and the team he’s building, we just need a mercurial HC and OC to take us to the promiseland (oh, and keep fangio… do you hear that Irish, KEEP FANGIO!!!!). Fox and hugeanus are NOT those guys.

    • Yay, 8 wins and seeing the Puke advance to the playoffs again!

At least Cargo will be gone.

      #halfFull

      • MB30SD

Guess so. Fucking sick of being shitty to mediocre man. And 3 wins to 8 will be enough of an improvement to get h yet another year.

We have a good GM who obviously gets player selection, we have a good DC, we just need that last critical piece. Alas, the org never goes the final mile to flip the bit.

        • willbest

Jury still very much out on Pace. His 2015 draft isn’t looking so hot, and his non vet min FAs getting banged up for multiple seasons

          • Johnnywad

Man Pace has been right about a lot. He’s also made some very ballsy moves for a young, new GM. He was right about Forte, Gould and seemingly Marshall this year. All very tough calls. Bennett is sorely missed but not the 2015 version of Bennett so fuck that guy. Wihitehair, Floyd and Howard coupled with Freeman, Trevathan, and Sitton, even tagging Alshon. All very solid management decisions. The White injuries are unfortunate, but unforseeable. And it isn’t like White was a WTF pick like Shea. I’m completely fine with the early days of the Ryan Pace era.

          • willbest

Bennett was going to be a problem. And its better to cut bait a year early than a year late. Pace seems to know when to move on. A good skill to have.

But you can’t look at his 2015 acquisitions and say he did anything other than a bad job. White was most certainly a WTF move though even without the brittle knowledge. He had 1 year, was unpolished, and it was a position of relatively low need. And we have effectively gotten no value out of the rest of the draft except a solid backup Strong Safety in Amos. In vet FA he found a aged vet CB2 that we are playing as a CB1 this year, and a top 20 OLB (when healthy) but who is misses about half his games.

To Pace’s credit his 2016 was a big improvement, both in the draft and vet FA. So if Pace were a football player, he had a crappy rookie season, and really stepped it up in year two. Sort of like Jeffery.

          • Johnnywad

            http://www.nfl.com/draft/2015/profiles/kevin-white?id=2552422

White was projected as a top ten pick and had every measurable nailed. He was one of three finalists for the Belitnikoff Award. That is far from a WTF pick at 7. And two seasons since have shown the Bears were far from set at WR.

          • willbest

You can’t retrospect our woes at WR and then claim White was a good choice. That is beyond ridiculous. He is literally the reason for those woes because we could have gone a paid Golden Tate or Mike Wallace or somebody like that after the break down in 2015. But no we ended up getting jobbed again in 2016.

But lets go back to April 2015 when your targets for Jay Cuter consisted of Jeffery, Royal, Wilson, Mariani, Forte, and Bennett. And then you look at other positions and realize you had no right tackle or center and you just converted to 3-4 and had a line not built for it, no ILB’s and no secondary.

          • Don’t think Wad is aruging White was a good choice, merely that he was considered a consensus top 10 pick, even top 5 or 3.

Lots of “experts” were debating if he or Cooper was better, and not many would’ve been shocked if the Raiders drafted White instead of Cooper.

Cooper was seen as the safer more polished option, while White the rawer, albeit more explosive WR.

            But again, INJ screwed us.

I didn’t hear ONE peep about any inj concern about White, and that’s what fucked us.

One may counter he only had one yr production, but so did Long and a lot of other prospects who panned out.

By most accounts, White was not a stretch at our slot, and the last “blue chip” player.

The rest were considered in a diff tier.

          • Johnnywad

            Bingo.

          • ButtonShoes

This is all that needs to be said about Kevin White:

            https://twitter.com/RothOfKhan/status/812078069099937794

          • willbest

Why didn’t they included White and his 19 catches on 36 targets for 187 yards in two years?

2.5 sacks is looking pretty damn good.

          • ButtonShoes

I really, really, really hope the 2016 class pans out. If Whitehair somehow busts or Floyd turns out to be made of paper, I might have to go and make a voodoo doll of Ryan Pace, and start stabbing it with hot pokers.

          • Johnnywad

Whitehair and Floyd are both looking like VERY solid picks right now. Can’t imagine Whitehair busting now. He’s gotten better all year after being thrust into action at a position he hadn’t repped at in camp. Pretty impressive so far. Floyd is showing he’s got what it takes. Not many DEs show that well as rookies. Throw Howard in and this draft is a Home Run in my book.

          • willbest

2016 draft is certainly more fruitful. I am always willing to heavily discount a GM’s first draft owing to having to use prior GM’s scouting reports. That doesn’t change the fact that the 2015 draft is objectively awful after 2 years and seriously unlikely to age better.

I am not dogging on Pace to say “off with his head”. Merely pointing out that he isn’t the shining bright personnel guy that MB was trying to describe him as. He is going to need a couple more seasons in the 2016 category without piling up any in the 2015 to merit that description.

          • Irish Sweetness

Have we given up on White? I’d give any WR 3 seasons, and he’s only really had a half season under his belt. He could still be all right.

          • Irish Sweetness

WRs take three years to develop or so they say, so drafting one instead of signing whichever vets were available wasn’t that smart. Vic Beasley was drafted next, Tod Gurley was two spots after him … Marcus Peters, Landon Collins … all pro-bowlers.

          • Johnnywad

Damn. Pace should have just picked all of the Pro Bowlers.

          • Irish Sweetness

I think Brandon has been playing injured. He was putting up studly numbers early on. Then he disappeared. But then again, the Jets offense disappeared.

        • Johnnywad

Not sure this isn’t part of their larger plan. I don’t think Fox was the guy they saw taking the Bears to the promised land. But I do think he’s here to hold down the fort while Pace replenishes the roster. Big picture, Fox isn’t hurting the Bears. No coach wins with the roster and injuries he’s dealt with. But if Pace is the right guy, the roster will be close when Fox steps out.

          • I said it from the start that I’d let Fox walk before Gase.

Gase is no sure-fire thing, but at least he has a pulse.

Incidentally, if Bears would’ve kept Gase, outside chance Cutler may have not sucked.

But Bears are way too conservative to have kept Gase over Fox.

Same reason why Fangio isn’t already the interim.

Top 5 pick, here we come…

          • willbest

Only if you think Gase calls a play that doesn’t get cutler’s thumb busted in week 1.

          • So we’re blaming his regression on that now?

Did his thumb blind him from not seeing defenders, including, the immortal Conte?

          • willbest

I know the hatred burns within you. But you seem to be under the impression that Cutler somehow behaves differently when Gase calls plays than when Loggains or any other OC does.

He is going to make his poor decisions regardless, but when his thumb is busted he won’t be saved by his cannon.

    • Sauron’s right eyeball

      9 wins at least.

    • BerwynBomber

I liked Gase. There was a lot of anti-Gase sentiment on here last year emanating from the Cutlerites. They were infuriated that Gase was receiving too much credit for Jay’s decent year. In fact, they thought all credit should go to Cutty himself, and if anything, Gase was a detriment.

Even this year Blogfather was tossing shade on Gase and MIA. Well, that is, until they started winning.

No surprise, haven’t heard a peep since.

BTW, if the season ended today, Gase is a top five COY candidate.

      • willbest

My knock on Gase was that his OC experience consisted of carrying Peyton Manning’s clipboard. I admittedly sold him short, he is acquitting himself nicely in Miami, although that roster has far more talent than our own.

Cutler does best when his OC treats him like a Sergeant instead of a Captain. ie. “here is a task, execute it”. The thing with Loggains is I don’t really get the sense he has given his QBs much more freedom than Gase did. So I am not sure where the Gase magic in fixing Cutler is unless Gase really is just a better offensive mind than Loggains. That is probable, but then they didn’t really have a lot of offense last year

        • BerwynBomber

There seemed to be more no huddle sets (or sugar huddles), plays were shuttled in a tad more quickly with Gase. Cutty also showed the best pocket movement of his career last year, which I attributed somewhat to Gase. It was also reported that Gase, like Martz and Shanahan, limited Cutty’s audibling responsibility. That kinda ties into your sergeant vs. captain observation. And there might have been more of an effort to turn Cutty into a game manager with Gase, which would result somewhat in Cutty having a solid year but the O not being all that productive.

All that said, I’m not as down as Loggains as most. As with Gase, the DoG penalties are kept to a minimum under him. Remember how often we would see those during the pre-Gase years simply because the play wouldn’t get the fuck in on time? Plus, the pass/run balance seems decent even if fans inevitably bitch about it.

My biggest criticism is that his playcalling seems very spotty in crucial moments. Then again, Mike McCarthy has a terminal strain of that disease, and he generally gets praised by the analysts as an O genius. Go figure.

          • I think Loggains does a decent job of mixing it up.

When the run is getting stuffed, he has no problem attacking though the air to loosen up that run D.

Also seems to call better plays in the 2min drill, esp with Barkley. Seems like everytime we get into a 2min drill with Birdcage, the ball starts moving.

But you’re right about crucial moments.

Last week was an obvious. Pass on 3rd and goal when Howard was running well.

Going away from Alshon cuz he thought he’d be double covered with Hoyer.

Those two decisions alone cost us 2 games.

But how much of that is Fox? Dunno. But considering Loggains was shuffling personel all season, I’d like to see what he can do with another full camp of Barkley/Hoyer and non-inj WRs/TEs.

Yeah, I’m willing to give him another year. My bet is the main guys — Fox/Fangio/Loggains — are all back. Though I do think Barkleytime might have saved Loggains head.

I’m happy we didn’t beat GB now, we’re too close to getting a game-changer in the draft. We can pick up the OT in the second, but I’m getting a semi for this Allen guy. “Defense wins champs” and all that …

          • Irish Sweetness

‘Sugar Huddles’, I like that. I don’t know why they don’t run more hurry-up. It’s just a smart thing to do, and Cutty always looked good doing it.

      • Irish Sweetness

Cutty turned the corner for me last season because he did what we’ve been screaming at the TV for six years for him to do. Throw the ball away Jay. He did, and he looked better for it. I don’t think that has anything to do with play-calling, and more to do with the concept of it sinking in. If that was because of Gase being in his ear, then so be it – but it wasn’t the solving of Fermat’s last theorem.

OC’s don’t interest me. if the offense has a good OL, competent QB and some pieces at the skills positions, then they’ll execute whatever play is called. Gase didn’t concern me when he was here, and he certainly doesn’t concern me now. Good luck to the Fins if they make the playoffs, because they look like a one-and-done team (unless they meet Houston who have scored a sum total of 22 TDs and have a -44 points differential).

BTW – does the NFC look like a pile of shit this year or what?
