Money Where My Mouth Is: Three Picks For Week Two

| September 17th, 2015

Screen Shot 2015-09-14 at 1.58.08 PM

I’m putting $100 on each of these bets all season. Will be keeping my total down below. (For those of you who are not gamblers, if you lose a $100 bet you actually lose $110. If you push a $100 bet, you lose the $10 vig.)

Tennessee +2 at Cleveland

Anti-Manziel pick. When I watch Johnny Football on an NFL field he reminds me of a young kid wearing his father’s suit. His lack of awareness inside the pocket is usurped only by his lack of understanding that the men sharing the field with him are faster and smarter than just about every player he faced at Texas A&M. Titans 23, Browns 16

St. Louis -3 at Washington

Washington v. Miami was the worst game played last Sunday. Neither deserved to win. Now the Redskins, without Desean Jackson, face the most ferocious defense in the NFC? Rams win on the road. Rams 20, Redskins 7

Jacksonville +6 vs Miami

Line is too high. Simple as that. Dolphins 24, Jags 21

Record Through One Week: 1-1-1

(-$20)

    first to say good luck.

  • TheBigCheesy

    Jeff…..where are you wagering???

Winners pay the rake, not losers. If you play $100 on a straight wager, you get back $190 if you win, and they keep your $100 if you lose….but they don’t come after you with a crowbar for another $10

    • he’s probably betting $110, then he gets $100 if he wins and loses $110 in a loss. Loses $10 in a push.

      • TheBigCheesy

Actually, you don’t lose $$$ if you push. You get your whole wager back.

        • DaBearsBlog

What bookie do you use? Can I have his number?

          • Scharfinator

No fucking kidding, house has to win somehow. That bookie won’t be in business long,

          • TheBigCheesy

The house still wins in Vegas. Winners pay 10%

          • you put your money in, they take 10%, and THEN you win/lose/draw

          • TheBigCheesy

I take it to the window

        • Sactowns#1

lol. Dude you must have a super sweet Sweed for a bookie. Can you please hook us up with his # so I can save myself the juice I’m payin.

    • DaBearsBlog

You are talking about websites that take money up front. I am not.

      • TheBigCheesy

Actually I’m just talking about Las Vegas books. But yes, online works that way as well.

  • I have to disagree with your MIA/JAX pick. Bortles is atrocious under pressure, and MIA can bring pressure. He will throw multiple INTs, probably one returned for a TD.

    • DaBearsBlog

I refuse to lay 6 with the Miami team I saw in week one.

      • that’s fair, but I just think MIA is a terrible matchup for JAX. Bortles is soooo bad against pressure.
I feel like I’ve seen some math somewhere that some of the safest NFL bets are picking the favorite when they’re favored by 4+. They make those lines big to trick you into taking the underdog.

  • BearDown100393

    Save your money.

  • MB30SD

I was going to go across that pic (left to right) and hand out numbers for the girls, but never mind. sigh.

Oh, and don’t gamble, put your money in a college fund for your future children Jeff. Ok off to get some lotto tickets… jackpot is over $175M this week!!!

    • WP34

Hey dude, thanks for jumping in yesterday. I played DII ’90 -”92.

      • MB30SD

Nice maing. What position? in Chi?

        I played 91-95

        • WP34

DB at GVSU, last year of Beck then Kelly. U?

          • MB30SD

SS, was an IMLB in HS and made the switch cause i was only 5’9″ 205-210, but I had ok speed (low/mid 4.6). Played at a UC school in northern cali. Was a blast.

In practice freshman and redshirt year we were the scout team for 1st team O. They used to rotate all the DBs at every position. Fuck man, CB was rough. Hardest position on the field if you ask me… especially for a guy 5’9″ an only running a 4.6, everyone knows where the ball is going but you. haha

          • WP34

SS H.S. in hindsight college program was brutal. 5’7″ 190. I played mainly corner. We had same scout team setup. BMakes me question hanging out in the quad w cheesy.

          • MB30SD

exactly. shiftless hippies. there were TONS of the stinky fuckers at our school.

    • MB30SD

oooook, I’ll just say that they’re about a 6 across the board.

      • The GP

The one on the far right?

      • 505Bears

I don’t know, the 2 on the right are 7 range.

        • Sactowns#1

Fakies are a no go in my book. I’ve been there and done that and I’ve recognized a trend. You don’t see too many educated/intelligent females walking around with fake knockers.

          • The GP

I’ve observed a 8% efficiency bump in BJ prowess in chicks with fakes.

I need more empirical samples, though.

          • And why settle for fakes when you can get the real deal.

I’d rather have a homemade meal than a HungryMan microwavable.

      • Ososfan

Only fairly interested on the one to the far right.

        • Scharfinator

Haha I think the far right is the one everyone notices.

          • Irish Sweetness

            Worn like a horse’s feedbag she’d be ….

      • Sactowns#1

Nothing like a women with fake boobs, tells me instantly she’s insecure/vain AND bad with money.

        • MB30SD

we’re not looking for wives here my maings, just a little fun for a night

      • 6s are great! Easy to lay. Low maintenance. Can actually have a convo with them without thinking in the back of your head, “I wonder who the Bears will draft in 2016?”. Very active in bed.

        Buddy Jesus thumbs up.

        • MB30SD

My brother always says, 4s, 5, and 6s try a lot harder.

You’re both right, but meh. When you go hunting, do you spend 2 days stalking the smallest buck you can find? When you fish, do you keep the one that’s just under the legal length? When you…. you get my point

    • WP34

I would work from right to left 2 at a time.

  • Irish Sweetness

Dude, Jax? With the Dolphins D?

TEN and STL bets look good though

Do we back the Chiefs just to prove Peyton’s done? Is he done? Can’t zip it, can’t beat KC’s D.

  • Irish Sweetness

Tennessee are -1 with tote sport dot com ….
STL are -3.5 …. and MIA are -6.

Interesting wagers for me would be ATL +2.5 vs Eli (in NJ), SEA +3.5 vs GB, and Dallas +5.5 against the Iggles, and STL. Although SEA w/out Kam ?

  • Midway Monster

Been lurking again for a long time. New season. New people on da blog!

    • Sactowns#1

Get that riff-raff the hell out of here!

  • Midway Monster

Just setting up an account again on the site’s new digs…new to me anyway. Glad to be back in the mix but as I said I’ve been lurking for a long time. Shady is one of the guys from the 06-08 time frame that I remember. Haven’t seen JB, Pissed Off or Al in WI…unless he’s turned into Al in Tuscon? I remember the glory days when I was even posting columns on this blog. Jeff you’ve continued to do a great job. J Wood I already like you just from reading your stuff in the past, a wealth of knowledge and sanity. Looking forward to getting to know the regulars again.

    • BillW

I do remember you from the 06 year – the year I discovered this board. That was great.

      • MB30SD

stop already. waste of everyone’s time, and not funny maing.

        • Waffle

          damn

          • MB30SD

            sorry, is that you?

    • AlbertInTucson

Albert In Tucson is not to be confused with Al in WI.

  • The GP
  • Ososfan

I have never paid much attention to the odds and have yet to learn how these things go. I know you guys have explained this before and Jeff used to even have a weekly tournament for free stuff but I always just picked teams I liked for that week and had a pretty decent record in the old blog. Any who, good luck!!

    • Scharfinator

We didn’t do a pick ’em contest this year – maybe because Jeff was in Ireland so close to the start of the season? I’m not sure.

  • Sactowns#1

I had that Miami pick too. The NO pick is tempting as it creeps into double digits. I thought it was INSANE that there were no home favorites this weekend. None!

    • Irish Sweetness

I don’t see how the Miami game isn’t a shellacking. The Dolphins have very under-rated triplets in Tannehill, Miller and Landry. Suh in the middle of that defense? Six points won’t do it. Could get ugly.

  • Irish Sweetness

OK. Money where the old mouth is, as per thread title.

My semi-modest triplet this week will be :

STL -3 v WAS …… was it six sacks of Russell Wilson last week?
TEN -1 v CLE (I believe is the current line) – Titans D had 4 sacks, 2 INTS and a FF last week. Mariota.
MIA -6 v JAX ……… scratch this game – just checked the game stats and watched the highlights of last week’s Dolphins game. Agree with Jeff. It could go either way at -6, so no bet.

    STL + TEN = 3 to 1.

  • I don’t actually bet, but if I were to pick 3 this week, I’d do:
STL -3 vs. WAS: Good vs. bad, great DL vs. bad OL and turnover prone QB
CIN -3.5 vs. SD: Bengals are better, at home, and SD has a long trip to get to the game
    TEN -2 vs. CLE: Mariota>Manziel

    • Irish Sweetness

      And McCown might start …

KC’s defense should bury Manning too. That’s looking like a bet.

      • yeah, I considered that one. Old guys don’t typically do well in quick turnarounds either.
But DEN has a nasty D, which means this should be one of those low-scoring games that could go either way, IMO.

        • you’re an FF guy.
What 2 HBs would you start this wk?

CJ Anderson vs Chiefs. Cons, CJ’s toe might be bugging him. Short week. Low scoring affair

Murray vs Ravens. Only thing that scares me is another Raiders blow out plus Ravens D

Blount vs Bills. Tough D, Billichick crazy to predict game script.

          • oh, that’s rough. Murray is an obvious one, IMO. I normally don’t touch NE running backs, so I’d lean Anderson, but make sure he’s healthy enough to go.

          • Yeah, Murray still got targeted for catches even in a blow out, and he’s always a threat on every play, but my only fear is that the Raiders get blown out again, and they take him out.

Yeah, I’m going back and fourth between Blount and CJ.

If CJ was totally healthy, not playing on a short week, away, vs tough division rival, he’d be a no brainer, but that’s not the case.

Never know with NE HB like you said, but if Bill commits to the run, he’ll be a beast. Blount finished off last season rather strong. Just wonder if that will continue.

hmmm. I guess I gotta decide sometime tonight

          • The GP

There’s a FF rule about Lagarette Blount. I just forget what i is.

          • haha. You were only a few points away from winning the Luffwaffe trophy.

            http://games.espn.go.com/ffl/trophycase?leagueId=835653&seasonId=2015

And I see you’re starting Chris Johnson, eh?

          • The GP

            tee hee

    • Waffle

i’m betting the house on STL. That is going to be a blood bath. Cousins dead.

  • NewBearInTown

Sac, it was a pleasure doing business with you.

    • Sactowns#1

I didn’t like the receiver but I needed a starting QB. Damn 2 keeper league!!

      • NewBearInTown

It was just a Morris for Ryan trade. The other players were filler. I don’t even know if I’ll keep McCown on my roster.

  • The GP

    Waffle gonna kill him a bag boy… a bag boyyy…… a baaaaaaag booooy…..

    http://www.redeyechicago.com/sports/redeye-jay-cutler-apologists-bears-20150916-column.html

  • The GP

    Bad stat from ESPN

Cardinals rated 2nd highest last week in BEST ratings for run blocks at 52%. League average is 35%, so 52 is elite territory.

Bears rated worst overall, with 62% AGAINST their defense. That means the Cards were 2nd to the Packers in grading offensive run blocking effectiveness.

So the Cardinals have an excellent run blocking line and we have a bad run D, or at least a technically unsound one, because I’m not sure this system cares about how the back ran – just what a hypothetical back could have done with that block effectiveness.

    • Everyone thought the Card’s Oline would be dogshit, but I think they were more than serviceable.
That being said, I’m more scared of Duke Johnson than Chris Johnson.
I also think Arians is going to air it out early. Our secondary is still questionable and pass rush non-existent. Why not pass it to Fitz-Brown-Floyd?

      • The GP

Goldman graded highest for the Bears in limited snaps. Clearly he needs to keep working more snaps into his rotations. With Goldman getting better and fitter, and Rat back – the D line has room to improve alot.

The Cards will mix it up. If they have early success running – I think they will stay on it.

        • I’m not sure our run D is weaker than our pass D at this moment.

Lacy was held in check for the most part, and those wide truck lanes from last year were mercifully gone.

Like you said, Goldman is only going to improve, while Christian Jones looks like a wall at ILB.

Shea does look AJ Hawkish though, dragging RBs down 5 yds down the field, but Cards don’t have that power runner.

It’ll be interesting to see what Arians does, but I have a sneaking suspicion he’s going to want to put on a show for the McCaskeys who snubbed him.

  • Sactowns#1

Look everyone! It’s a group of the whites people you know. I bet they listened to Mumford and Sons the whole ride there.

  • Midway Monster

Sorry Al in Tuscon, I didn’t think you were the same as Al in WI but the screen name seemed similar and had me thinking. Bill I’m glad you remember some stuff from the old days…all positive right? I remember picking games and stuff back in the day also. I actually went back into my old sent emails and found some from 06-09 with referencing picks. That was always a lot of fun.

Typically I’ve been back and forth on Cutler probably more positive than negative over the years but I have to say after that pick on Sunday I just chalked it up to Cutler being Cutler and potentially losing us a game…or at least sealing defeat. Its a problem that I’m used to that. I’m not sure we’re ever gonna be good enough to win a SB with him but I’m confident Fox is the guy since he’s righted a ship everywhere he’s been. I’d love to draft a QB even with the hopes that he turns out to be the next guy.

    • The new regime takes the same view, I think.
They tried to trade Cutty, but no takers.
They then tried to move up for Mariotta, but Titans weren’t listening.

This signals to me that they’re seriously looking, but they’re not desperate enough to ride with career backups like Vick, McCown, Sanchize, Clausen, etc.

      Well, not desperate enough yet.

After a few more vintage Cutler picks, that might change.

  • Midway Monster

    David Johnson dude…not Duke

    • The GP

      Use the reply button, MM.

It’s in very light grey under each post – might want to fetch the bifocals.

    • Duke is his nickname. Like Peanut.

      • Pissed Off

Duke is the Cleveland Running Back….also sorry to the original Midway Monster…..he is not I and I am not him…..just realized my former name was Pissed Off so I’m back to that. Geez it’s been a long time. Just realized that when I went back to the emails when we were talking about the picks and found that my screen name was Pissed Off….

        • BillW

Actually Midway Monster sounded familiar to me so I assumed from your post under that name you were MM and MM was on the board back in SB year.

But Pissed Off is an even more memorable name, and yes I remember that one – which is you, Even though I thought MM was you – but wasn’t even though it was you posting. Even though I don’t know “you” at all, Whatever.

          • Pissed Off

Glad I was at least memorable I spent a lot of time on da blog in those days and while I hope to contribute here again often I will have to actually try and reel it in. I really feel like the bears were too much a part of my life at that time if that’s possible and while I’m older i still haven’t missed watching a game in 10 or more years in person or on tv so I love them bears. Just hoping I see a super bowl win before I die.

          • The GP
          • Pissed Off

I can assure you it’s not. Need to ease up on the cynicism

          • MB30SD

he wasn’t talking about you PO

      • Huge Bear’s Penis

Duke Johnson plays for the Browns.(real name Randy)
        David Johnson plays for Cards.

    • beninnorcal

You said this was your former name, and I remember it circa ’06-’07 when I started reading here. What is your more recent screen name?

      • Pissed Off

I don’t have a current one and havent had one since Pissed Off. Cool to hear someone remembers me. I avoided the blog almost entirely to no ones fault, life got in the way and it was out of sight out of mind for years. I’ve been hanging out reading stuff heavily for the past few months and sporadically for the past year but basically from 2010 to about a year ago I bet I didn’t come here even once to read anything.

        • Shady

I remember you. You were that big Rex Grossman apologist. I think you eventually got tired of defending him, got pissed off and left.

          • Pissed Off

That’s all you remember me for, ouch. I wish there was a way to go back and read some of the old stuff from way back then….can’t hardly imagine what it was like breaking down Thomas Jones and Cedric Benson as a 1, 2 punch and the likes of our stellar defense vs the opposition every week.

          • BillW

Well, a winning team does wonders for everyone’s disposition. It never occurred to me that would be the high point for the next 10 years.

Bears wisely hit CTRL-ALT-DEL and here we are.

          • Pissed Off

That was the high point indeed. Too bad we didn’t sign Arians instead of Tresty….

          • BillW

I don’t remember her screen name, but there was a very avid female Bear fan – I think actually she was from Indiana too?

      • Pissed Off

Thanks man, glad to hear another remembers me. As I said before I look forward to getting to know everyone again. If you remember that handle let me know, I have faint memories of handle names but as you can see I barely remembered my own…

  • Does anyone have Jeff’s OG site link? (before the gnomes).
I’m trying to remember when I joined. I don’t think it was in 06 cuz I was waaaay too busy working, getting my degree and pooning (verb).

But I really can’t remember. I think it was 07-08?

I just remember I kinda came in like gangbusters without introducing myself cuz that’s the way it was on the ESPN NFCN blog under Seifert (which actually wasn’t that bad cuz the other teams had their bizarro us, but too many trolls). I actually think the regs on that made their own site once ESPN changed formats and Seifert left.

    Hmmm.

    • Shady

Found an old Chicago now link, but I think only Noah Brier has the OG archives.

    • yeah, I branched off from ESPN with some people who formed their own site, but that was before Seifert left or they changed the commenting system to Facebook. People got sick of getting banned so they started their own site.

That’s how I got my start writing, though I had a bit of a falling out with some of that group after branching out on my own.

      • ha. You were prolly there when I was. Do you remember your handle there? I can’t remember mine. I think it was the same (4ever85) but mightve been KissMyButkus.

I remember there was a Pack? fan who was dying of cancer who was pretty cool, and a few others, but the Lion’s fans were by far the most obnoxious.

        • I was jwoude23

The Pack fan was a troll, he wasn’t actually dying of cancer.

          • Seriously? He was pretending to die of cancer!?

Not possible, since the government would actually MAKE money on that

      • Huge Bear’s Penis

it cost very little. Disney who owns ESPN and ABC invested $250mill in DraftKings, Fox invested another $300 mill in DraftKings. NBC and Comcast has large investments in FanDuel. So with these large investments by all the major broadcasters, and the largest cable provider, they can cheaply sponsor the pregame shows on each of the stations, and still make a fuck ton of money.

        • MB30SD

          ahhhhh….

Peyton Manning got old, and he has 1 less competent receiver than he did last year with Julius Thomas gone.

    • SC Dave

      Defense looks just fine.
Offense no longer entirely carried by a crazy awesome QB

  • SC Dave

Nice ending block by wr to make the last 8 to 10 hards easy for charles to get to the zone. One of my favorite things about brandon was how he was never above throwing a block

OK boys, why don’t we start our own picks contest? Everyone is in charge of keeping track of their own record.

    http://www.covers.com/sports/nfl/matchups

I’ll take the Bears +2 (I’ll always pick the Bears)
I’ll take the Seahawks +3.5 (I’ll always pick against the Cheese)
And I’ll take Indy -7 vs. the Jets

Winner gets a reacharound from MB and a box of Wheaties.
    Good luck!

    • willbest

      I will take
      Detroit +2.5.
      New England -1
And as enticing is TB +10 is, I am going to have to go Pittsburgh -6

    • MB30SD

Whoa whoa whoa… winner better take me out to dinner at least first.

      • Shady

Good news is if you win the contest, you can jerk yourself off. Blindfolded.

        (Alright I’m done)

    • Irish Sweetness

Random unofficial official picks contest. 3 picks a week. Done.

I’ll just take the Wheaties …..

KC offense 5 turnovers…..you da real mvp

  • Shady

    wowwwwwwwww

  • AlbertInTucson

Tsk, tsk, tsk. Jamaal, Jamaal, Jamaal.

  • AlbertInTucson

Alex Smith. Scramble and stay in bounds and have to burn that final TO, then get sacked. Well done!

  • That Bronco’s D is no joke. Holy shit.
They had more big plays in the past two weeks than we did all last season.

    Ware, Miller, Talib, Harris…they’re balling.

  • BerwynBomber

Chiefs are choke-y, especially when facing DEN. was really hoping to see new blood atop that division by year’s end but it may be the Broncos yet again. Even if they’ve downgraded in HCs.

    • AlbertInTucson

That was an UGLY loss. At home. In Division. Turnover, turnover, turnovers.

      • BerwynBomber

Agreed. Imagine if we had a loss like that to the Cheese. This place would explode for weeks.

Yeah, we had the infamous ’13 season finale Rodgers-to-Cobb, but in many ways we played well, had one communication mistake, and the Cheese came up with a by-the-skin-of-their-teeth last minute drive.

But shit the Chiefs were giving that game away all night tonight.

        • SC Dave

The worst play *ever* was when we left a fumble lying on the field for Boykin to pick up and take into the end zone. Far worse than Conte missing the call.

    • Irish Sweetness

Hardly choking now, Jamaal Charles of all people coughs it up twice.

  • AlbertInTucson

You really think the Jags can but up 21 against the Fish, Blogfather?

    • BerwynBomber

I don’t know about the TEN/CLE bet either.

I was one of the few on this board that liked Mariota (though Scott was his biggest supporter). Still, much as I liked Mariota, last week was an aberration. No QB is that good that quickly. But I do get Blogfather’s point about Manziel.

      • Irish Sweetness

But can a bad QB throw 4 TDs, no INTs on their debut? They have a good defense and a good running back. Also, McCown might start if he passes protocol today. I don’t watch college ball, but Mariota must be good if makes his debut like that, Tampa Bay or no.

  • I was strolling through Gnome land, and was wondering, “Where the hell are my comments?” And in typical Gnome fashion, one must be SIGNED OUT to view your own comments because that’s gnome logic. It seems I’ve been wanting to give up a 3rd to trade up for a true stud since Dec 2011 (and perhaps further). Would’ve been nice to have both Aaron Donald and Leonard Williams the last two drafts. But what do I know?

    From the gnome archives.

“Jerry’s given the OK to make a “big move” because his job is on the line again.

This is why I think he hoarded that 20 mil this year, and this is why
I remain somewhat optimistic about signing Mario Williams or even
moving up in the draft (for once) with our extra 3rd rounder.

This season was lost as soon as Knox slipped, but at least now we can
truly see how shallow our team is on multiple levels, and hold a decent
    position in the draft.

One last hurrah before the Mayan end for Angelo and gang.”

    • BerwynBomber

Were you a Beasley guy? He looked very good the first half against PHI. Basically shut out the entire second half but he was going up against an All-Pro OT in Jason Peters.

      • I don’t think I would’ve had a problem with Beasley, though I was worried about him being undersized and his “attitude”. Many backers pointed out that Von Miller was almost identical, but Von Miller also had a mean streak to go with that athleticism.

Really, once Leonard Williams was gone, we probably should’ve traded down, but I understand drafting the last “blue chip” player even if it was at a position that was deep in the draft and that we didn’t need.

What I really wanted to do was to jump the Jets and draft Williams. The Skins would’ve likley traded down since Scherf would almost have been guaranteed to be there at #7 with the Jets likely drafting White or maybe even Beasley.

We would’ve had to give a 3rd (Grassu), but that to me is worth it.

        • BerwynBomber

Yeah, I didn’t have many strong opinions about most guys. I liked Mariota, albeit with some caution, and I liked Langford as a mid-round pick because I had seen a half-dozen MSU games the last two years (though I wasn’t as high on Trae Waynes as a first rounder).

My only thing with White was that, short of a QB, I didn’t want to spend that high of a pick on offense. Hell, we have six pro bowlers on offense. It should function well enough.

Anyway, hopefully the kid gets healthy and turns into Julio Jones. I just remembered seeing Beasley’s name on the boards and he flashed the first half of the Monday night game, and yes ATL took him right after we took White. But who knows …

          • I know Data LOVED Beasley.
It’s hard to predict any guys, esp athletic freaks with some production. Sometimes it turns out (Watt), a lot of time it doesn’t (Rolondo McClain, etc).
I just go by guys that “jump off tape” and compare them to previous guys I was excited about.
It’s going to be interesting to track, that’s for sure.

          • BerwynBomber

Yeah, and in situation like the Bears, that first round pick came down to a need vs. best guy on the board debate and apparently the latter won.

          • MB30SD

            I liked Beasley and fowler

        • Irish Sweetness

Glad we didn’t get Scherff – he’s not doing well. I think we got a good guy, Williams would have been nice, but if White was healthy we’d be sitting pretty.

  • EnderWiggin

Its going to suck when Manning passes Favre on total yards.

Don’t ask me why I feel that way…

    • Scharfinator

Because we won’t stop hearing about it? Or because Narcissist will show back up in the media?

      • SC Dave

        Both?

    • AlbertInTucson

      It’ll suck for Narcissus.

    • BearDown100393

Was it really that great for Favre to hold the record?
