Jeff & Jahns: Sun-Times Beat Updates on the Bears as the Regular Season Approaches [VIDEO]

| August 24th, 2015

On this episode of the nation’s most popular podcast between a Bears blogger and a Bears beat, Adam Jahns tell us:

  • Why he believes Eddie Goldman starting now in the middle of the defense is better for the Bears long-term.
  • Why he’s best impressed by not only Goldman but also Ego Ferguson and Will Sutton.
  • Why he’s far more concerned about the recent play (including practice sessions) of Kyle Fuller.
  • Why the Bears don’t have an answer at right tackle but he believes Charles Leno Jr. is going to continue seeing first-team action.
  • Why Ryan Mundy’s injuries have paved the starting road for Adrian Amos.
  • Why he’s not buying in entirely to Marquess Wilson yet but is slowly coming around.
  • Why “Bad Jay” will surely make an appearance but he believes the system will showcase his abilities better than any previous one.
  • Much, much more!

Goldman coming on is great timing given the 3 game suspension that just came down for Rat.

  • The GP

It wouldn’t be a Jeff bit without the ringing phone….

      Very art deco.

      • Scharfinator

        BEST part!

    • SC Dave

I always liked that part of it. So homey, like calling your easy chair and not bothering to get up.

  • The GP

Is there a Bears fan who doesn’t lament the loss of the Keith Traylor / Ted Washington lineup that “allowed Lack to run”?

This has become a truism like the ’85 Bears. It’s the Jauron mythos.

    • Trac

      Loved those guys.

    • Irish Sweetness

With Goldmember and 8-ball Williams on the line, those days may be soon approaching!

FF Alert So, Da League is full, with the exception of MBHP who I invited but has yet to officially join.

so, MBHP, check yo emai (junk mail too)!

If MBHP doesn’t check it by WEDS, I’m offering his spot to another.

Frank, Scharf (or anyone else), you guys wanna be on the 1st waiting list? Lemme know.

Trac, you’re in . Irish’s Thai time will prevent him from making the draft, unless he tells me otherwise.
Besides, Ender wants a piece of you!

    Draft date/time

This Sat, 9pm Central, Aug 29th This should coincide with the tail-end of the Bears 3rd PS game.

Any questions, ask the commish, moi.

That is all, ladies. Back to your regularly scheduled program.

    • Trac

      Are there instructions? Lol

Never done an auction before. Grrrr…

      • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd POX!!! (AKA, ButchDeadLift)

Just go to “mock drafts” espn. There’s a whole Lobby there.

      • EnderWiggin

Its easy man. The draft order means NOTHING. The person with the first pick may pick AP. Then, everyone frantically bids on AP for 2 minutes. Highest bidder gets AP. Then the person who picks second choses the next player we bid on.
Everyone starts with $200. When you run out of $ you can draft no more players.
I drafted AP for $60 last year. I finished last…

        • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd POX!!! (AKA, ButchDeadLift)

That’s what you get for drafting a child abuser!

          • Shady

Actually Divine Foreskin was NBiT’s second choice in FF team name.

        Pete”Maverick”Mitchell.

FF name (if Terrance Mitchell makes the team)

      • Shady

Go practice a mock aution draft on ESPN and see what it’s going to be like on draft night.

    I’ll translate for Jahns.
Vereen’s a pussy; Amos is not.

  • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd POX!!! (AKA, ButchDeadLift)

Jahns…Fuller in a slump. Like a batter, he must get his mojo back or be lost forever…

    • The GP

When Biggsy came into the game at Bourbonnais and got behind Fuller on a deep route from Jay, it hurt Kyle’s confidence.

      • Trac

If only Tucker had of listened to Barb on how to use Fuller last year. Hee hee.

      • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd POX!!! (AKA, ButchDeadLift)

Uncle Rico could go deep on Fuller right now.
Fuller needs an Eye of the Tiger montage

        • The GP

Uncle Rico could throw a football over them mountains.

    • Trac

I’ve never heard the term “slump” used for a football player before.

      • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd POX!!! (AKA, ButchDeadLift)

CBs I think more than any other position (with the exception of maybe QB) really thrives on that self-confidence. It’s no coincidence that the best ones are borderline narcissistic.
Look at the two best ones in the last 20 years – Revis – Prime.

Once that mojo is gone for a CB, it’s like deflating fake boobs.

  • Bear Down in Tampa

I’d call the Cowboys and offer a 2nd rounder for La’el Collins right now and honestly if they backed me into a corner, i’d give them a 1st.

    • SC Dave

Just read an old mmqb story on that kid… a raw deal to be sure.

    • Shady

The Bears weren’t willing to use a late round draft pick on the guy, even though RT was a glaring position of need, but the front office was more than happy to sign up Ray bleepin’ McDonald.

    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/08/24/glover-quin-dont-blame-the-preseason-god-meant-for-jordy-nelson-to-get-hurt/

Lions safety Glover Quin said today that God will decide every player’s fate, and changing the NFL’s preseason schedule can’t change that.

“I hated Jordy got hurt, but in my beliefs, and the way I believe, it was — God meant for Jordy to get hurt,” Quin said.
I myself truly believe that I was meant to pound Tradewind every sunday whilst Cutty goes ALL PRO.

  • burntorangenavyblue

I shouldn’t be “shocked” or “surprised” about this Carter/Sapp ’14 rookie convention thingy, but the NFL is making it so much harder to want to support the league as more and more shit storm keep hitting the fan.

    • Shady

I’d put the NFL on par with FIFA at this point, perhaps worse.

Adam Jahns tells us …. everything we already know?

J-Rat getting suspended three games for substance abuse kind of catapults Goldman into the starting lineup now.

  • Trac

This is why I really liked Ereck Flowers as the Bears sleeper pick. I always believed he was one of only 2 or 3 LT ‘ S in the draft that could come into the league and actually start and play at a high level at the LT position. Eli is going to love having him as a starter.

    http://espn.go.com/blog/tennessee-titans/post/_/id/15394/how-marcus-mariota-understood-the-defense-on-what-should-have-been-a-td-pass

  • BerwynBomber

Bears would be smart to see what TB will require to part with Mike Glennon next year.

Btw, Winston does, indeed, have a pro arm. Lived up to his #1 draft pick status before suffering the ankle injury in the first half.

    • Waffle

Why? Clausen is now a career backup and can stay here for years. Glennon will never be an nfl starter or else he’d be one by now.
We definitely need D linemen and O linemen…..and maybe a real TE threat outside of Martellus.

      • BerwynBomber

Glennon is better than Clausen and he will be much cheaper than Cutler. Plus, he is considerably younger than the latter.

        • Waffle

Glennon wasn’t good enough to play on the Bucs. Cutty is a vegan now and will be good for 5 yrs….unless he gets Small Pox.

          • BerwynBomber

Believe me, I don’t think Glennon is all that. At BEST, his potential career ceiling is Cutty’s or a little short of that, but I also wouldn’t read a ton into his not starting at TB. A) he lost his job to Lovie’s guy McCown (which never made sense) and b) now he is the back-up to the #1 pick in the draft.

Btw, he did start most of his rookie year and played pretty decently.

          • Irish Sweetness

He lost his job to a QB that was rated a lot higher (McCown).

          • BerwynBomber

Not career-wise. Glennon’s QR is a solid thirteen points higher than McCown’s, and that’s sizable — a whole different level of effectiveness.

    • Irish Sweetness

Osweiler is about 7 points higher on the QBR than Glennon, Fitzy is 95.

Winston surely has an arm on him, accurate too.

      • BerwynBomber

You mean QR not QBR. Yes, Fitzpatrick had a very good QR last year but his career QR is still lower than Glennon’s.

Osweiler hasn’t played enough for any rating to be indicative of a decent sample size.

  • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd POX!!! (AKA, ButchDeadLift)

As for “bridge” QBs, I’m on record for Mettenburger.
A 4rth for him should be just fine.

kid has talent, his knee injury knocked him down coming out of college right???

      • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd POX!!! (AKA, ButchDeadLift)

Yeah, and there were some questions about his “maturity”, but the light seems to have clicked. Dude looks like the prototypical QB. Live arm. Accurate. tough. Hot GF.

If we could get him for a 4rth, I’d be thrilled, but the damn Titans just said they ain’t giving him up.

They’re hedging their bets with Mariota in case he sucks or gets killed like RGKnee

    • BerwynBomber

I thought you were on record for Jake Locker. 😉

      • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd POX!!! (AKA, ButchDeadLift)

I wanted both to come over and compete. Locker would’ve cost nothing. His biggest question mark was his health, but I like Mettenburger much more.
Glennon’s alright, but he doesn’t get my panties wet.

There’s a few rookie QBs who intrigue that are riding pine too, like that kid behind Brees.

        • Irish Sweetness

Shouldn’t the ‘bridge’ be a vet. What’s wrong with Clausen? He’s probably better than Andy Dalton, and the Bengals are paying him a wedge.

I like Claws. And that shaggy-haired beautiful doll face David Fales might be something.

          • Big Mike

Everyone forgets that Clausen was an early round pick. (2nd Round) Played on a terrible team and got yanked when Cam Newton was drafted and his been a back up ever since. I think he has starting QB chops, and as the bridge QB would be better than many Hoyer, Green, Foles, and so on.

  • BerwynBomber

Hubby said today that Fuller might be better suited as a safety and that Rolle is beginning to remind him of Archuletta.

    • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd POX!!! (AKA, ButchDeadLift)

Archuletta? As Dennis Miller once said, ouch babe.

I can see Fuller at FS. Gotta remember that he was essentially drafted to play in a base cover-2 which is a lot different than the 3-4 Fangio runs. Much less zone, though I think I agree with Johnny and should be moved around a la Woodson, including at nickle and blitzing.

      • BerwynBomber

Hubby acknowledged Rolle’s rock solid pedigree (two-time Pro Bowler?) but thought he has looked a quarter or half-step slow thus far. Said he could be coasting but if not Bears could have another version of Archuletta on their hands.

Waffle’s idea about Fuller as a Woodson Jr. is intriguing (Barb desired Peanut in that role as well), but I got imagine it takes more DB saavy and versatility than we might imagine. Not saying it is unimaginable w/Fuller, but Woodson was/is one special cat of an athlete. Closest thing I’ve seen to him since is probably Patrick Peterson in AZ.

        • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd POX!!! (AKA, ButchDeadLift)

The Steeler Woodson was like that too, great CB and S, but perhaps not as versatile .

Fuller has the size. Can tackle. Seems to have instincts. Hubby might be thinking that Fuller at this point just doesn’t cover well one-on-one, but he was never drafted for that, really. He was drafted to replace Peanut, and even Peanut struggled mightily one-on-one esp against smaller receivers like Steve Smith.

I still think it’s too early to throw in the towel for Fuller. He just needs to become more consistent, but it’s only his sophomore year, and his rook season was not a full season due to inj.

          • BerwynBomber

Yup, Woodson and Woodson have a lot in common other than their surname.

Oh yeah, waaaay too early to give up on Fuller. I actually thought he played better the last part of last year than most other DBBers did. Obviously slipped but still offered blanked coverage at times. (And a rookie getting housed a couple of times by Megatron is nothing to fret over.) But some have said he has looked like crap in camp this year as well in both preseason games. So there is that.

Anyway, if he is ultimately moved to a traditional safety position and proves reasonably effective there it would hardly be the worst turn of events.

          • Scharfinator

“And a rookie getting housed a couple of times by Megatron is nothing to fret over”

            No kidding!

          • Irish Sweetness

I think it would be hard for anyone to cover Steve Smith. Those little dudes are quick. But Peanut would take Calvin Johnson out of games, I always thought he was under-rated as a man corner, and would have made a great safety to boot.

We shouldn’t be afraid to sit Fuller in favor of Mitchell, and maybe start working McMannis in at Safety with Mundy, with Fuller at Nickel ?

    • Big Mike

Young Archuletta who showed promise? or the guy we picked up and was awful? Fuller just looks lame.

    • willbest

The only thing I can think about with Fuller is that he somehow thought that the off-season meant time off, rather than a 1 month vacation followed by 3-4 hours a day of strength, and cardio training followed by 2-3 hours of tape watching. Maybe getting some time in with position coach.

  • Bear Down in Tampa

Today in the what could have been agonizing theater: If management was slightly more proactive we could have Aaron Donald and Leonard Williams (both taken the pick right before the Bears pick), instead we’re sitting here with Kyle Fuller and Kevin White. Time will tell how bad this will be but for right now, it ain’t lookin’ too good folks. Although one could argue we need secondary help more than front 7 help, I myself am a firm believer in building from the inside-out.

    • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd POX!!! (AKA, ButchDeadLift)

I was practically screaming at the TV in 2014 draft to trade up with the Gmen and hop the Rams for McDonald. But I’m pretty sure Emery’s genius thought, “Nah, the rams are loaded at Dline, they can’t possibly draft another.” Sure enough. Boom.

It would’ve cost us about a 3rd, so in this case, getting Donald would’ve meant no Sutton, which I personally could live with.

Then, deja vu! I was screaming at the tv to trade up to land Williams. Specifically, with the Skins esp since they were targeting Scherff that most definitely would’ve been at #7, so it would’ve been an easy sell.

Again it would’ve cost us a 3rd, in this case, Grassu. So we’d have Williams but not Grassu and I would’ve been more than OK with that too. (I’m not particularly enamored by Grassu).

So, the question is, would we rather have Donald and Williams but no Sutton/Grassu, or Fuller/White/Sutton/Grassu ?

I know what my answer is, but GMs always foolishly believe they’ll land the next Brady in the later rounds.

      • willbest

How could you be enamored by Grassu, kid hasn’t even played a pro snap yet. Give them a couple years.

If Mitchell is coming on this strong, then go with Jennings and McMannis, and have Mitchell at 2nd string with Alan Ball – and move Fuller back to nickel. Or experiment with Amos at SS and Fuller at FS. Amos can be backed up by Rolle or Mundy If Rolle is rolled-up, then move him down the roster.

Wayne would’ve been interesting, but essentially he’s like an old Royal. I think Wayne racked up like 700 rec yds last year. Royal will easily get that, but he has more explosion.

We have to take the training wheels off this team. I wanna see how Alshon and Wilson respond with out that Vet.

We need new (homegrown) leadership on this team, imo, and shouldn’t import 1 yr captains.

I don’t even know who the captains are anymore. Allen? McPhee? Rolle? (all FAs).

Long def has C written all over him, but he’s still relatively young. He still looks up to the other vets like he did with Garza, and now probably Slauson and Montgomery.

That’s just the NFL culture. His time will come though in the next two seasons.

  • BerwynBomber

From the “Opener got a Lot Less Scary” Department (courtesy of ESPN stats and info). Rodgers-to-Nelson stats for the last four seasons:

    256 of 364 (70%)
    4,202 yds (11.5/att)
    39 TDs / 4 INTs

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd POX!!! (AKA, ButchDeadLift)

Yeah, Bmarsh might be the best thus far.

Which is odd. We haven’t had a stud WR since, what, the 50s? Now, in a 4 year span we could have 3 in Bmarsh, Alshon and White.
