All-22 Tweets: Hroniss Grasu’s Debut vs. Chiefs

| October 13th, 2015

Screen Shot 2015-10-13 at 12.10.21 PM

(1) Saw no issues w/upper body strength. To contrary he planted defenders into the ground several times. Love how he finishes blocks.

(2) All his mistakes – including Cutler sack/TD – were assignment errors, not physical errors. He AND Slauson both confused on sack.

(3)

(4) His comfort level and confidence increased every quarter. He was a stone wall on the Bears two touchdown drives.

(5) It is only one game but this kid can play. If this game was an example of his growing pains, the Bears found a good one.

  • i know it was his first game, but are we ignoring the low snap/letting guy blow by him on the forte TD? did that not happen?

    • ok. just rewatched. doesn’t look like it was his guy on the play. but the snap was still him. so there.

      • willbest

Montgomery had bad snaps as did Garza. So only a couple at the beginning of his career shouldn’t be all that concerning.

      • DaBearsBlog

I’d attribute snaps to nerves. He snapped into shotgun almost exclusively in college.

        • AlbertInTucson

And it WAS his first game.

All things considered, a more than reasonable debut at a tough position.

          • DaBearsBlog

I was expecting to see a player out-manned physically. That just wasn’t the case.

          • AlbertInTucson

Between him at Center and Leno at LT, there was PLENTY to be concerned about.

And IN Arrowhead, no less, although, once again, Bear fans were WELL represented!

          • AlbertInTucson

That last snap WAS low, but we’ve seen worse.

          • BillW

Too low better than too high ESPECIALLY in that critical situation. How could he NOT be nervous?

          • AlbertInTucson

            Hell, I sure was!

          • speaking of Leno, I don’t think Bushrod should get his job back if he keeps playing this well. Looking like a solid LT.

          • DaBearsBlog

You know how I feel on this. If Leno has a chance to be future starter, keep playing him. Teach Bushrod right guard and hide Ducasse’s car keys in a bush.

          • MB30SD

that’s not a very nice thing to do to a fellow Jeff.

          • yeah, you’re the 1st person I saw banging that drum. Props.

          • Big Mike

Leno looks more comfortable at LT than RT. That’s an oddity. Seems to be Kyle Long will be a pro-bowler at RT as well. He’s been climbing, no blowing away the learning curve. He’s had a noticeable improvement each week, and a big jump when he got to use 2 hands.

          • Justin Houston was absolutely invisible last week.

          • Big Mike

            That’s what I saw. 🙂

      • BerwynBomber

That snap was not that bad. At absolute worst waist high. Watch the tape again. It is more on Cutty dropping it that any horrendous snap.

  • I really like Grasu’s long-term potential, especially under Magazu. He’s similar physically to Ryan Kalil, who was drafted when Magazu showed up in Carolina and developed into an All Pro.

  • AlbertInTucson

    Lions 0-5.

No fun to watch so far this year.

A chance for Bear fans to take away at least some of the Ford Field Home Advantage this week?

    • CanadaBear

Not sure if it was a typing error or intentional but I loved someone calling them the Loins the other day. I’m retiring calling them the Kitties. it’s Loins from here on out!

  • The Yes Guy

    Yes?

  • AlbertInTucson

I ask again, did Ducasse manage to get thru Sunday unflagged?

    • yes

      • Sactowns#1

Damn it Johnny, that was Yes Guys to answer. Al served him up a softball.

        • MB30SD

          please god stop

          • The GP

            No?

          • Sactowns#1

Where is your Cutler Jesus when you need him?

        • AlbertInTucson

Sorry, I was just wondering because I didn’t recall hearing Ducasse’s name come up at all on Sunday.

          That’s a GOOD thing.

      • AlbertInTucson

I needed to hear it from a reliable source. Thank you, JW.

  • MB30SD

BAAAAAAHAHAHA… do they hand out Darwin awards for people who don’t accidentally kill themselves doing stupid shit?

    If so, I’d like to nominate……. http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/crime/florida-woman-live-streams-her-drunken-crash-gets-charged-with-dui/ar-AAfniJR?li=BBgzzfc

    • you can’t fix stupid.

    • Big Mike

I believe a darwin award needs to result in death, or infertility. The objective is to remove the dna from the gene pool.

      • MB30SD

        thought so. damn it.

      • BerwynBomber

I shudder to think how many times I could have ended up on that list. SMFH.

        • Big Mike

Unless it was recorded and posted, I don’t think any of the stunts from our younger days qualify. Progress has changed the standard ☺

        • CanadaBear

Me too, BB. We at least didn’t put it on the internet. We drove home on the back streets and hoped like hell we made it.

and as counterpoint, the text of an article from the Sun-times from 30 years ago about McMahon.

      McMahon cultivates image as eccentric

      Kevin Lamb

      Originally published Oct. 13, 1985

Jim McMahon likes his outlaw image well enough to work at it. “He
likes to be disgusting on purpose, just to get a reaction out of
people,” says wide receiver Ken Margerum, McMahon’s pre-Bears friend.

“It gives him a kind of mystique. That’s healthy. It makes it hard for teams to get a read on us.”

He doesn’t have to deck out in such outrageous get-ups for TV
cameras. His chewing tobacco doesn’t stretch his lower lip beyond his
nose after the cameras go. He could protect his light-sensitive eyes
with sunglasses that don’t have mirrors or quarter-inch slits. He
doesn’t really have a reason for pulling a hood over his head and
putting a sweat band over the hood.

But if he didn’t do those things, people might think he’s just
another pretty-boy quarterback. That would be enough to make him puke.
McMahon’s costume might be a put-on, but his fear and loathing of being
lumped with the cookie-cutter quarterbacks is sincere.

So is his contempt for convention and authority in general. When
McMahon came off the bench to beat Minnesota with three quick touchdown
passes, he all but spiked the ball at the feet of coach Mike Ditka, who
had made him furious by benching him. Even Mike McCaskey, the Bears’
president and ultimate authority, laughs when he thinks of McMahon’s
      motivation that night.

“That’s why he’s a great quarterback,” Margerum says of McMahon’s
nonconformism. “Defenses have all these computer printouts of what
you’re going to do on first-and-10, third-and-three or whatever, and Jim
just goes against all convention of what he’s supposed to do. A lot of
big plays go to a completely different receiver than the one that was
      planned. You can’t defend that.”

McMahon has never been far from authority’s thumb, growing up
Catholic and going to a Mormon school. “I was on probation my whole
time” at Brigham Young, he says. This week, a Utah writer asked him for
his fondest memory at BYU, and he said, “Leaving.”

“I think his image attracts a lot of people. It also offends a lot of
people,” Van Horne says. “Not that he cares. But people have an idea of
what a quarterback should be. Most quarterbacks are kind of reserved.
      Jim’s not that way.”

He’s not as far off-center as he sometimes appears, Hilgenberg says.
But compared to other quarterbacks? “Oh, definitely,” Hilgenberg says.

“His goal,” says Margerum, “is to make the cover of Rolling Stone.”

  • BerwynBomber

STL is starting Lackey on three day’s rest? Seems like a desperate move. Never realized how thin their starting pitching was until the post-season.

    • 2 of their top 3-4 pitchers are out. Well, I guess technically Wainwright is back, but only in the bullpen. They also have several position players who are hurt.

      • BerwynBomber

Yeah, they’re a banged up mess.

        • 2 outfielders playing hurt. Had to shift the best RF in baseball to CF so their CF could shift to a corner spot because he can’t run. The best or 2nd best C in baseball is a shell of himself. Other corner outfielder also hurt.

This series would have been even better if both teams were at full strength.

          • BerwynBomber

Who is considered better than Molina? Posey?

          • yeah, I’d say those 2, in some order, are the best in the game

          • Bear Down in Tampa

Injuries are a part of the game. Just happy we’re the ones at full strength.

          • Addison Russell out today and doubtful for game 5, if it happens. Also relievers Jason Motte and Neil Ramirez had their seasons wrecked by injuries.
But yeah, about as healthy as you can hope to be.

          • Bear Down in Tampa

Forgot about Russell. Hopefully the fielding jitters Baez showed were temporary.

          • Baez is typically a solid defensive SS.

    • CanadaBear

Short rest and he won’t have the strike zone he had in game 1. Eckersley said it best during that game, “His (the HP ump) strike zone is the size of a barrel. Wish I was pitching.” I know it was the same ump for both teams but it didn’t seem like the same strike zone for both teams. I hadn’t seen a strike zone that big since Eric Gregg retired.

    • losing carlos martinez for the playoffs was a big punch in the gut for them.

  • Big Mike

An excerpt using PFF scores. comments in parenthesis are mine

As good as McPhee was, Sam Acho was a little better as he got a plus-3.5 grade. (who replaced Jared Allen) Acho led the Bears with six tackles and one pass defended. Adrian Amos also got a positive grade with a plus-1.9. (who replaced Brock Vereen)

As for the Bears offense, Marquess Wilson continues to impress as he finished with a plus-1.7 grade. (Who should be our 2nd or 3rd wide out if everyone is healthy) He caught six passes for 85 yards and one touchdown. Jay Cutler (plus-1.1) was also solid, finishing the afternoon with 252 yards and two touchdowns. (who we clearly should have traded for a 7th round draft choice and a bag of doritos)

    • Scharfinator

      MMmnn doritos….

  • AlbertInTucson

Ford Field crowd doesn’t have any reason to be worked up for Sunday.

Bears need to go in there, get on top and give Kitty fans a reason to leave early.

  • AlbertInTucson

    DaBearsBlog @dabearsblog
100%. Never said Wilson wouldn’t be a good player. Just wanted to see it with my eyes. Seeing it last two weeks. https://twitter.com/jermaine611/status/653999553214087168

It was pretty much all sizzle and no steak before this.

He still doesn’t strike me as being 6′ 4″.

    • The GP

He led all Bears besides Cutler in offensive snaps. So he played the whole way.

  • Jes.

    • MB30SD

      No!

      • MB30SD

Does it work if you do it like that?!?

Always a great way to sneak booze into a concert. If you really want to get crafty you make booze infused pudding.

        • The GP

Booze Pudding. I think that’s where Snowden used to work.

that sounds like something Bill Cosby uses.

      • MB30SD

speaking of, I am SO fucking sick of this heat. Efuckingnough already, it’s mid fucking october!!! Jesus, I didn’t sign up for this shit.

yeah, yeah, I know. I have no room to complain.

This is the last gasp of a dying summer. After this is all smooth sailing and I’ll be skiing by turkey day.

          • MB30SD

            hahahaha… yeah, WATER skiing!

          • AlbertInTucson

I can usually use my pool into November.

NASA says “El Nino” will give us a very wet winter.

          • MB30SD

Still waiting Al, it’s been in the high 80’s/low 90’s in SD for almost 2 months straight. Brutal.

          • Sactowns#1

I hope so. Have a few ski trips planned here on the west coast and I would prefer to ski on nice fluffy powder, not this crap we’ve had the last couple of years.

          • Cormonster

What’s your favorite ski hill out there? I’ve only skied Squaw Valley many years ago, but would like to make a trip back some time.

          • Sactowns#1

I get my pass at Sierra each year which includes days at Squaw and Alpine. I like Squaw, it’s a nice big hill with a really nice lodge. I also like Kirkwood. the drive there sucks but they’ve got some great tree runs. Sierra has some great parks and it’s 90 minutes form my house to the first run of the day.

          • Cormonster

Thanks. Kirkwood sounds intriguing. I love tree runs. Might have to try there next time I make it out that way. Most of the time I go to Dillon, CO with a group of friends because it’s so much cheaper than anywhere else out west.

        • AlbertInTucson

          Possible 100 here tomorrow.

          Lovin’ it.

I was in Tucson for a memorial service about 10 days ago. The weather was awesome. I would have contacted you but I flew in Friday night and flew out Sunday morning.

          • AlbertInTucson

            That WAS a nice weekend.

Sorry about your reason for visiting, though.

Too many of those these days.

          • CanadaBear

The worst part was the cause of death, suicide. Felt so bad for his wife. She’s lost 10-20 lbs since it happened and she was tiny to start. My mother told me years ago the worst part about getting old was burying all your friends. Mother’s know best.

          • AlbertInTucson

            Suicide.

            Awful.

Suicide Victims are in such bad shape that they fail to realize the emotional CARNAGE their act is going to leave behind.

Would have to fun to meet up for a lunch or, lord help us, the Oakland Game!

I think I was off that Friday but we were out of town that introducing my Mom to her first great grandson!

            Now THAT was fun!

          • MB30SD

hahaha… I did NOT sign up for this… you did. I can’t remember the last time I actually wanted it to be cold.

          • AlbertInTucson

I never complain about the heat. I do not miss winter.

To people who DO complain my response it always

“Hey, we live in the DESERT!”

        • CanadaBear

You live in the best climate in the continental US. Either put on your big boy pants or move to Hawaii. Sheesh, I thought you were a toughie!

          • Trac

Only when it comes to broads mate.

  • Few thoughts from chief’s game.

    1. Does Fuller play w an invisible neckbrace? Dude never turns his head.
    2. On that strip td, they stunted. Maybe Grassu and Slauson should’ve switched off.
    3. Bennett has a habit of becoming lackadaisical.
    4. Acho is so good. He not only gets pressure but can cover the flats. And he plays specials. He gets the Clutts scrappy award.
    5. This is now McPhees D, body and soul
    6. Not saying i was happy when Shea went down, but…
    7. Wilson is smooth in his routes and surprisingly spry after the catch.
    8. Yes, having rbs split out is nice, but not on short downs when we have a robust run gsme finally. This has been a trend since ps
    9. Long is going to make the PB as a rt.
    10. Were Leno and Ducasse that decent, or the Chief’s dline that impotent?
    11. Mariani is safe, but watching DAntony Thomas made me want an upgrade.
    12. I guess it’s good, but didn’t even know who replaced Rolle
    13. Me Amore Amos
    14. MmmBears

    • FourFeathers

I have grown immensely weary of watching McClellin attempt and fail to play football in a Chicago uniform. He sucks completely. And I HATE the fact that he always shows in the picture frame standing right next to wear the tackle was made. He’s the ambulance chaser of linebackers.

    • EnderWiggin

All you had to do is count out Sac and I. Now we are both on three game win streaks. Granted, I played Waffle last week, so that was like a bye with a W.

      • If waffle would’ve started the guys i traded him, he might’ve won!
It’s gonna start getting good in ff land when the intradivision matches start.
If Frank actually kept up w his squad, he’d be top dog over there, but gp is king for now. Shady is reeling esp w/o Charles now.
It’s an interesting league. Some are being carried by qbs, others by wrs, the hbs have sucked mostly, and tes are scoring .
        Odd ff yr

        • EnderWiggin

Let us add a DB, DL, and LB to next years lineup.=)

        • Cutty of Olivet Nazarene

haha, I forgot to put them in the lineup.

          • EnderWiggin

            Thank you!

          • Cooks finally blows up, on ur team, on the bench.
            U would’ve got 60 points from.him and Rawls alone

      • Sactowns#1

I shall continue to roll this week in the inevitable march to the championship. I asked Cuttys dad and he said he’s feeling the Bern.

    • EnderWiggin

You finally make an appearance and not one word on Cutty? C’mon.

    • MB30SD

#6, homie is never seeing the field (as a bear) again.

    • Pissed Off

I though the same about mariani all the kicks go thru the end zone anyway and if we don’t see something soon maybe the roster spot could be used elsewhere

  • FourFeathers

Grasu clearly looks like a great prospect. He’s far from a finished product but Ryan Pace did well with this pick.

  • CanadaBear

Just re-watched the 2nd half. Loved the play where Christian Jones smacked the TE (who dropped the ball). If Reynolds gets comfortable CD might not get back on the field other than ST’s. Maybe it’s because I’m sick of CD but I thought Reynolds looked OK and Jones stepped up after CD went off.

  • The GP
  • Sactowns#1

I know we’re all stoked on the win last weekend but can we talk about the two missed 2 point conversions? I know they were both close but they were also plays designed to get the ball to the man 3-4 yards from the end zone. We have some big TE’s and large WR’s, why can we not get the rock to someone standing in the end zone?!

    • Yeah, i was not thrilled about that and some of the 3rd down calls that were obviously short even if executed.
We went 3 and out 3 times ina row in the first half, i think, putting much.more pressure on our d and specials.

Bears need to put a complete game together

      • MB30SD

we haven’t been good in short/red zone situations forever it seems.

        That said, think about this…

        Alshon
        k.White
        Wilson
        Black Uni
        Royal Flush
        Matty

…Not to mention our line back. That is a day and night look to what we currently have. That said, that’s not happening it would seem, so we gots to roll with whats we gots.

      • SC Dave

Executing that last sentence would allow more of us to drink the Kool-Aid.

    • The GP

The out route to Mariani was ill-conceived. He’s a white possession receiver from Montana.

Rule 1: Throw it to him when he’s ALREADY in the endzone. Why run an out route to the 1? Who does he think he is? Johnny Knox?

      • BillW

Because he thought it was only first down?.

        Sorry. Had a Trestman flashback

You are welcome my blog brother.

Ravens fan is misguided. It’s Trestman you idiots! Look at the O stats!

    • Huge Bear’s Penis

Baltimore fans are like Chicago fans, they appreciate/love defense. We all can remember how miserable we were for the last 2 year. The only difference now is that we had first hand experience on the ineptitude of Trestman.

      • AlbertInTucson

The Ravens have pretty much ALWAYS had a defense since they moved to Baltimore, no?

    • AlbertInTucson

Yes but their defense has gone South, too.

        • BillW

God. You ARE as old as me. A John Cameron Swayze reference!

          • AlbertInTucson

Yeah, I remember those Timex spots. Especially the “Attach it to the propeller of an outboard motor” spot.

Hell,I still remember Swayze doing newscasts.

We did a couple of audio parodies of them in college.

Our host was “John Camera Perswayze”.

In one, the watch is attached to a Mexican cliff diver’s fist. The diver does NOT survive the dive but when our announcer reports the watch is still ticking, The gathered crowd breaks into a loud cheer and yells “Ole’, Viva la Timex!”

In another one we attached the watch to a paraplegiac in a wheel chair and push him down the stairs. Heall be came “Foley Artists” to simulate the sound of the chair bounding down a flight of stairs.

We thought we were VERY clever.

Had those on a cassette which is now, sadly, long gone.

I still have a casstee deck hooked to my amplifier.

            Dual deck.

            And, yes, a turntable too.

            I’m THAT old.

          • AlbertInTucson

I used to listen to “Lowell Thomas Brings you the News” in the early evenings while doing my homework. I think he aired on WBBM, “Newsradio 78.” They also ran “Sports Time, With Phil Rizutto. No upstairs TV back for us back then. I don’t think we had a Color TV ’til about 1970.

I remember that well, it was the first “war” with what seemed like play by play.

          • AlbertInTucson

Best one was the late General, “Stormin’ ” Norman Schwartzkopf briefing the pressi with a video…

“You’re about to see the luckiest man in Iraq.”

A truck gets across a bridge about a second before a smart bomb makes the bridge disappear.

    • AlbertInTucson

Tucson is home to an A-10 squadron at Davis-Monthan AFB so I see them daily in the skies above.

The Air Force wants to retire the A-10s.

Their most durable, cost effective weapons platform since the B-52.

They claim the new, not yet in service, F-35 can do the A-10’s mission.

Except the F-35 program is currently a dumpster fire.

      • MB30SD

        I don’t get that Al.

Unlimited funds (ours) and everything they need to make it work. How could it possibly be a dumpsterfire?!? I know the easy answer is that it’s gov’t run, but really, how is it possible?!

      • Irish Sweetness

I don’t know how they drop the Thunderbolt, what replaces it? It’s like a low altitude tank.

        • AlbertInTucson

Apparently, at least 3 of us do.

I would think you’d have figured out that all kinds of stuff gets discussed here that has little or nothing to do with football.

Seriously, if you see a post you don’t like, all you have to do is hit that little collapse button on the upper right of a post and it disappears. I use it all the time anytime I see a certain troll. Works great.

I just wish I didn’t have to press it again every time I refresh the site.

        Chill.

        • Pissed Off

Tell that to mb….he likes to call guys out on stuff that he doesn’t give a fuck about rather than ignore and collapse but appaently it’s not a 2 way street….figures

Just did a little digging on Sam Acho. Turns out he was the Campbell and Wuerffel Trophy winner as a senior at Texas. Good dude

    • Trac

      But he’s neither a RB nor a QB. Hmm…

    • AlbertInTucson

Acho was always a good contributor when he was with the Cardinals.

      • Johnnywad

I listened to him a bit today on the radio. He’s definitely a Bear I can really pull for. Good character and appears to be a solid player

        • Shady

Not a Cubs fan (Southsider) but the I’m fine with them sending the Cardinals packin’.

Love that Russell couldn’t go so “Good glove weaker batt” Baez replaces him and cranks a 3-run homer.

        • BillW

          Irish by any chance.

My father in law (rip who I loved and still love dearly). Was south side Irish all the way. Sox and chicards. Then gb since he couldn’t root for the bears. Except he did strongly in 85 because he saw how much it meant to me.

Can’t continue. Something in my eye

          • AlbertInTucson

No Irish, here, but I have cousins that are and they grew up n “Canaryville” just south of Daley, Sr’s. neighborhood, Bridgeport.

Daley Sr. was a big time Sox fan.

My Dad was a Cards fan too but he didn’t have a problem becoming a Bears fan when they left town.

I’ve told this one: Dad sat next to Butkus on a flight coming back from a business trip in SF back when the Bears still flew commercial. They Chatted in Lithuanian. Daddidn’t want to bother him for an autograph. He did got me Rudy Bukich’s.

Dad was also a Sox fan, ergo me too, but he was never anti-Cub

    • The GP

      Kyle Long?

      • Johnnywad

Hub referred to him yesterday as the “Best offensive lineman in all of football.”

Wow. Must have KILLED him to say that.

        • It would’ve been funny if someone interjected, “long is like the Pro Football Weekly of linemen”

  • Irish Sweetness

I’m glad Grasu is working out, he’s a high quality kid in the leadership game, and this will be his offense in a few years. Ducasse doesn’t look too bad in the run game, looking at those Thayer clips.

  • AlbertInTucson

    DaBearsBlog @dabearsblog
It will be very hard living in Queens the next few weeks when I am pulling for the Cubs.

Well, the Dodgers may yet make that a moot point.

  • AlbertInTucson

BTW, I only had ONE Bloody Mary with the Chicken Caesar Wraps for lunch while watching at the bar and d the Bears STILL won so, apparently, the menu has nothing to do with it.

    Different Bears shirt, too.

    Same hat, though.

    Must be the hat.

  • NewBearInTown

If Long lives up to expectations, we will play left tackle at some point.

That means the future of the Bears line is
    Long – Slauson – Grasu – ??? – Leno

Leno hasn’t really lived up to being called the “future” yet. But the guy’s playing left tackle his rookie year. If he can’t hold up the left side, he may be good enough to be the #2 tackle and play the right side. That puts us one good guard away from having a really solid group there. And we’ve got a backup center who might play that role when he gets healthy for now.

The offense has a good future, though we need more weapons, depth at TE and RB, and a young QB in the next year or two to start hopefully grooming (not that many teams have that mind you.) The one area where we’re really behind the league is running back depth. I wish Fox and Gase would limit Forte’s touches a bit more, if not to save him the mileage at least so we can see what we’ve got in these young bucks.

    • Irish Sweetness

I would have thought we’re ahead of the league curve on back depth, although with Jock-squeeze joining Perry on IR …. isn’t Carey and Langford enough cover? We have Lasike on the PS.

    • 1) Leno’s not a rookie
      2) Leno is much more comfortable on the left than the right
