A Digital Representation of the Bears Salary Cap, Position-by-Position

| August 11th, 2015

Got an email from a digital agency guy called Matt Zajechowski, who created a graphic on the Bears salary cap with Olivet Nazarene University. Usually I ignore these emails. This one I kind of found cool. And I’m not even remotely a salary cap guy.

Here’s the description:

In 2015, the Chicago Bears are projected to have a salary cap of $144,606,834, with total liabilities (or guaranteed money) of $136,298,355. For those of you doing the math (as most Bears fans are), that leaves exactly $8,309,479 in cap space. So how do Da Bears fare against the salary cap, both as players and as position groups?

The graphic breaks down the cap for the Bears position-by-position. It is the largest image I’ve ever posted so it’s coming after the jump sop as not to ruin this site on mobile devices. Enjoy.

Off-topic, but how do those LBs have 40-numbers? I thought LBs were restricted to numbers in the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 90s. If they were listed as DBs, they can have 40-numbers, but a guy listed as ILB wouldn’t be able to get away with that.

I don’t like the NFL numbering scheme. It’s supposed to make it easier for casual fans to know what position a guy plays, but on defense that’s just plain silly.

    • Trac

Who cares what the women think. Hee hee

      • Irish Sweetness

What did the man say to the woman with two black eyes?
        “I’ve already told you twice!”
        …etc.

    • Maybe just for the preseason and cuz the Bears have the most retired #s?

As Trac says, once we trim the roster down, we’ll have to use the proper #s or be proper fucked.

      • Doc Hamstring

Yeah, but Acho has been on the team a year, hasn’t he?

    • BearDown100393

They will double up on the numbers also. Example #45 offense and #45 defense. More players than numbers available at camp.

  • Trac

Jerred Allen ‘ s salary really jumps out and bites you in the ass doesn’t it? Friggin Emery!

    • Huge Bear’s Penis

      its the larger font.

    • SC Dave

      Not any more than Jennings’

      • Scharfinator

Both of them are rough. I see Allen being okay this year, with Jennings continuing his plummet.

        • When they asked Jennings what’s the difference between this coaching staff and the previous, he replied, “Strategy.”

That’s about as damning as I’ve ever heard. Let’s hope it’s true and Jennings returns to his playmaking self this season.

That being said, he should remain in the slot, or only manned up against Antonio Brown type WRs (and there’s more in that mold in the NFL now).

          • Irish Sweetness

Big Ben has Brown, Martavis Bryant and Markus Wheaton at receiver … with Bell in the backfield. That’s going to be some power in the AFC one might think.

          • Bear Down in Tampa

They drafted Sammy Coates from Auburn too. They always seem to have receivers in the pipeline. They have also been doing it in the 2nd round or later too over the last few years.

        • Sactowns#1

We’ll see if he can slim down and get back to where he was. Looked like he put on about 10lbs of muscle and it just slowed him down.

      • Trac

My thoughts as well. I’m looking at his numbers and I’m thinking, is there another Tim Jennings on the roster I don’t know about? Hahahaha

    • willbest

I am willing to give Allen a pass. 1) the pneumonia kicked his butt for a month. 2) He always brought it, and its not his fault the linebackers and secondary were incapable of covering even a target dummy for 2 seconds. 3) I have seen more creative defensive scheming from high school programs.

      • Trac

I hear you. Still, it’s a huge number for an aging vet playing a new position. If he rakes handle then I’m all for it.

  • Trac
  • BerwynBomber

I didn’t know Ball was a safety or projected as one. Thought he was a CB for some reason.

    • Irish Sweetness

Between Rolle/Mundy – with Amos hopefully catching fire – mixed in with some interesting changes up front … the defense could be very interesting. We look a bit weak at corner though.

  • Trac

It’s being speculated that Tampa and DeToilet are showing interest in Aldon Smith.

    • willbest

      Not the Patriots?

  • Trac

I’d like to see at least 8 million shifted from quarterback to the defensive line.

  • Pretty cool. Few things.

    1. Would’ve liked to have seen how each position compared to the starters of the league (like where Cutler, Forte, Bennett, etc land compared to the projected starters on the rest of the league).

    2. Aren’t Ball a CB and Shea, Houston, Washington technically LBs (or “edge”?)

    3. Considering the contract, Mills might be on a VERY short leash. Grassu is essentially receiving a comparable contract. Mills should at least be very motivated

    4. Kinda weird that Eddie Royal is the top paid Bears WR. This will be a trivia question after Alshon and White are getting $$$

    5. Totally forgot Shane Carden was on our QB carousel. How many non-interceptions has he thrown thus far?

    6. If Forte and Allen are gone next year (not to mention trimming fat like Bennett, Rolle, Gould), that’s a lot of extra mula to purchase new toys.

    • Irish Sweetness

How about the 600lb Gorilla at #7 ?

      7. If Cutty doesn’t send fear boners into the opposition w/ good receivers + good defense + good coaches + lovely kids + obscene amounts of cash …. then his 16.5M can find a new home.
That’s enough wedge to put together with Houston/Allen’s 18.5M to make some serious moves.

LB, LT and a passrusher ? Throw 4M at Ryan Fitzpatrick and see how things pan out.

      • Johnnywad

        Doesn’t Fitzpatrick suck?

    • SC Dave

I’m curious what happens with Forte. I would not be surprised if he has three goood years left. The new contract, tho, would likely have to have a ‘hometown discount’ to keep Matt in Chicago. I know I would prefer to see him retire a Bear.

      • I would like Forte around too, but both Gore and Lynch, in my estimation, got overpaid, and he’s probably looking at them as comparable contracts (which would be ludicrous. Forte is good, but he’s simply not that HB defenses commit 8 in the box for).

I guess anything’s possible with the new regime and rising cap, but both Forte and Alshon need to recognize they’re not A+. They’re a notch below the top tier, and should be paid accordingly, but that never prevents egos from getting in the way of sober evaluations (see, Urlacher, Kruetz…)

  • Fuck it. Let’s just go for 2 every time this season. What do we have to lose? Gould is sucking moose wang anyways.

    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/08/11/jim-caldwell-thinks-some-teams-will-go-for-two-every-time/

    • Irish Sweetness

He’ll be getting paid serious wedge ….. just to kick off. The odd field goal ?

    • SC Dave

I’d see if he returns to form first. Gould was not the only Bear to have a bad season last year.

  • Sactowns#1

Bear Pascoe bringing in over half a mil? Cray cray.

    • willbest

There are league minimum rules. A guy who has been in the league a decade can’t be paid less than something like 900k. However, such a player would only count as about 500k against the salary cap.

  • Irish Sweetness

Wow, we’re paying Rolle 5 and Eddie Royal 5.5 ? If Allen looks old after this season we can shed 18.5 losing him with Lamar, draft their replacements, and we have the guys to fill in already here. Bushrod is feeling like the next important piece of the puzzle. Is he dominant enough to man the position?
    ….. Bueller?

    • willbest

I kind of expect the Bears to spend on a tackle in round 1 next year.

  • Irish Sweetness

Any word on guards in camp that might take over from Kyle (if moving to RT) ?
I hope that Tayo kid gets a look at guard and then makes it. Maybe try Grassu out at G rather than have him on the bench.

    • Trac

      You’re always talking x ‘ s and o ‘ s Irish. What happened to you? Hahahaha

  • BerwynBomber

Geno Smith out 6-10 weeks due to a broken jaw courtesy of a teammate’s sucker punch.

    http://finance.yahoo.com/news/jets-quarterback-geno-smith-gets-173956094.html

    • Doc Hamstring

Is Olin Kreutz on the Jets now?

    • Trac

Who the heck is Ik Enemkpali?

You don’t talk trash to a “real” African American. Hahaha

    • willbest

So what you are saying is there is a good chance that if Rex Ryan had been coaching any other team over the last 5-6 years they would have made a SB appearance.

    • BearDown100393

Brandon Marshall is very emotion right now.

    • AlbertInTucson

      Starting QB problem: Solved.

      • I know you only do Burma Shave’s for da Beloved, but man, this is ripe for one!

      • SC Dave

Unless, of course, Sexy Rexy answers the call.

    • Why do I get the feeling that Jet fans are secretly relieved?

It’s like when finding out you don’t have to go to the in-laws for Thanksgiving.

“Ah, man. And I was REALLY looking forward to it…”

    • Sactowns#1

Guess we wont be getting Fitzy for cheap anymore. He’ll come in and light it up with BMarsh and suddenly his stock will skyrocket ala McCown.

      • Waffle

thanks Sac, I needed a lighthearted joke to lift my spirits today. That did it.

      • beninnorcal

We were after Fitzy, wow, glad that won’t happen. You remember what happenned to McCown after his stock ‘sky-rocketed’, right?

    • AlbertInTucson

Geno must have taken the red jersey off too soon.

Question: Does Enemkpali get credit for a sack?

      • SC Dave

I think it would be a sock, in this case.

        • AlbertInTucson

          Ding! +1

  • Waffle

I just realized that the Bears first game is on Thursday. Didn’t even realize until just right now.

    • Trac

Yeah, I didn’t realize the preseason had started until I saw the hall of fame game on.

    • SC Dave

Some fans you two are. Geeez

      • Waffle

        haha, I know, i’m slipping.
I’m praying to the football gods that no one gets trapped under a pile.
        #justsurvive

        • Trac

Jeff’s been putting us to sleep with his new low expectations shtick.

          • Waffle

Season hasn’t started yet so…..we’re going playoffs baby

    • beninnorcal

I just realized it a couple days ago. The preseason tease begins.

  • EnderWiggin

    New thread.

    • Trac

      I prefer this one.

  • Trac

Jeff just totally killed a decent thread for a romper room piece. Jeez already…..
