Open Debate: How Would You Approach the Top NFL Free Agents for 2014?

| February 19th, 2014

byrd

Chris Wesserling at NFL.com listed his top twenty-five NFL free agents for this off-season. Here is that list, with all of the offensive players removed:

2. Greg HardyCarolina Panthers defensive end
3. Brian OrakpoWashington Redskins linebacker

5. T.J. WardCleveland Browns safety
6. Alterraun VernerTennessee Titans cornerback

10. Brent GrimesMiami Dolphins cornerback
12. Vontae DavisIndianapolis Colts cornerback

22. Sam ShieldsGreen Bay Packers cornerback
23. Walter ThurmondSeattle Seahawks cornerback
24. Donald ButlerSan Diego Chargers linebacker
25. Randy StarksMiami Dolphins defensive tackle

Today we are bringing back the Open Debates of yesteryear. Put yourselves in Phil Emery’s shoes. How would you approach this list? Would you target anyone specifically? Would you stay away from anyone specifically?

My answer…?

For the Bears it is all about the safeties. Sure a player like Michael Bennett or Michael Johnson or Alterraun Verner would be an improvement for a porous Bears defense. But their most definitive need is at the safety position and if Byrd or Ward manage to escape the franchise tag period unscathed, Emery should move his chips to the middle of the table.

I’ll take a few of the better responses and create a post with them later in the week.

  • my first move would be to… ah screw it. i don’t want to think of something clever. it’s early.

FIRST. actual answer coming later after i poop.

    • MB30SD

      awwwww, look at you. Honeymoon?

      • wedding isn’t until the summer, so honeymoon won’t be till later. we’re not sure where to go, though. i tried suggesting bears in lambeau, but she didn’t appreciate the seriousness of the proposal.

        • MB30SD

          I applaud your efforts sir!

I don’t remember if you’re back in Chi or NYC (or elsewhere), but I can safely recommend Belize. Beach and jungle in one trip. Excellent. and it’s only 3 hrs from Houston.

You have to see it to Belize it!

        • Irish Sweetness

“…but she didn’t appreciate the seriousness of the proposal.”

It’s started already. No give and take. Back off mang. Ask yourself why you’re getting married … why are giving this woman the big ticket ?

          {leave him alone, Irish! Jeez …}

          STFU.

Ask yourself …why? So I can give this bitch half my money when she dumps me?

          {Oh come on Irish, not all marriages end that way …}

No, only half do, the other half just live together in strained misery for the sake of the kids slowly but surely growing cancers inside themselves …

          {JESUS IRISH!}

Why man … why? Is she pregnant?

          “I love her …”

          Not good enough. Why, mang?

          • 1. she sings the bears fight song and spent weeks imitating jeff’s hawk-like “McCown!” mating call

            2. she supported my decision to leave my job so i could move to utah for a month of snowboarding without her.

            3. my folks just celebrated their 38th anniversary, so i’m a subscriber to the “people can stay together” newsletter

            4. i’m happier with her than without her.

            5. she curses at the tv whenever chris conte’s name is mentioned.

          • MB30SD

Sorry ev, have to agree with irish on this one 100 perce…

…wait. what did you say at #5???

…uhhhh, does she have a sister?

          • ha. i knew that one would help win you over.

          • MB30SD

            Kinda have to agree. Sad.

            We’ve been so jaded mate

  • Bender McLugh

that looks like a LOT of salary in that list……how many could da Bears actually afford? 2 at most?

I would love to Jarius Byrd signed…..fat chance though.

  • MB30SD

I’m on the Bennett or joseph… and/or byrd or ward bandwagon.

Who’s with me… ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh (jogs out of the room)

  • MB30SD

    what a true american hero!!

    http://www.cnn.com/video/data/2.0/video/us/2014/02/19/dnt-woman-buys-pacsun-offensive-shirts.ktvx.html

Hey fucking victorian judy, why don’t you do something actually useful and give that money to some orphans or the dogs crying in sara mcclaughlin commercials instead. Asshole.

    • SC Dave

Do you have something against people deciding how to spend their money?
Do you have something against people putting their money where their mouths/beliefs are?

On the banning side, I guess I’m not in favor of that, although if they are explicit, perhaps they should put a cover over the pictures like Hustler, Playboy, etc., do with their covers.

      • MB30SD

Do you have something against people voicing their opinion on how people spend their money?

My opinion is that this woman is an asshole for wasting money on something that offended her own delicate sensibilities. Had she paid those hundreds of dollars to help free a sex slave from prostitution… just one… would I be lauding her decision. Heck yes.

I am pretty much wholesale against imposed modern victorianism. It’s ridiculous and pathetic.

making nudity ‘a thing’ just makes nudity a thing. It’s been around for a long time my friend: http://img.izismile.com/img/img4/20110908/640/cats_paintings_640_15.jpg

GASSSP!!!!! We should never take our children to any museums to see this disgusting mind-warping smut! (see where I’m goin with dis?)

        • SC Dave

No, you were the only complaining, not I. She has “imposed” nothing – just made a choice to purchase a few items from a store. If you want them so bad, there’s always mail order.

So far as educating your children, you should do as you see fit. I know enough about your moral compass to not be concerned. (Gee, I hope that did not sound snarky – definitely not meant to be).

          • MB30SD

thanks dave. I subscribe more to the european model. Make drinking taboo and your kids will abuse it, same with pretty much anything. Make it normal and healthy in consumption and it will more likely stay like that.

          • Trac

European model? What about this beauty?

But yeah, hot… super hot! She doesn’t even have hairy ankles

          • Trac

Have you been to Europe lately? He he.

          • MB30SD

last time was in 2010, and yes, plenty of moose limbs in the EU

          • Trac

I actually think NB made a pretty profound statement when he said and I’m paraphrasing ” everything is intertwined and what another does effects other people in one way or another”. Some people are too risque which causes other people to go the other way and protest. The burka is a great example of this going too far in my opinion.

          • Irish Sweetness

Nah. The hidden-ness of the sexiness is mind-blowing. At passport control, they have to lift them up, and you see some of the most incredibly beautiful women you will ever see in your life. The photo gets taken and down goes the veil again. Heartbreak. The forbidden fruit … ahhhh. I have honest to God been absolutely floored on occasion by getting a look from some of these ladies. Lightning bolts.

          • Trac

I have no problem with Burka’s unless there’s an ak-47 under it. If a person’s faith compels them to wear it, so be it but a Burka in itself does make a person righteous.

          • MB30SD

But they’re still going to hell no matter what right?

            Sorry couldn’t resist

          • Trac

There is only one Judge and I am not He. The truth is that Islam is a mishmash of Judiasm, Christianity and hokus pokus. There are many lies that lay at it’s foundation. No habitual liars, thieves or murderers will inherit the Kingdom of Heaven. That is what I believe.

          • MB30SD

Seems like a good exclusion list.

No shirt, no shoes, no service?

          • MB30SD
          • Irish Sweetness

Spent a fair bit of time in airports in places like Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Muscat, Oman …. seen a lot of ladies close up where all you can see is their eyes, and there is NOTHING sexier when those eyes meet with yours. Nothing. If it lasts any longer than a brief flash .. you’ve just been eye-fucked.

          • MB30SD
          • Irish Sweetness

As an alcoholic (five and a half years sober) I completely disagree with this. Kids will abuse alcohol (a) if they are genetically pre-disposed to so, or (b) if they have suffered a chain of traumatic events, or (c) all of the above. Drinking alcohol is not normal and healthy – Alcohol is classed as a poison by the EU, it kills brain cells (which are irreplaceable).

            My $0.02.

          • Sactowns#1

            UH……….

          • MB30SD

I get it. here kids do it more for prestige it seems. To show off, fit in, be cool.

If light drinking is seen as a normal dinner enhancement/family/social thing at home and not forbidden fruit, maybe that helps. Luckily no alcoholism/addiction in my fam. But in general, you’re probably right.

Congrats my maingses. Really good for you.

        • Trac

What does how you like to decorate your home have to do with some girl that wants to show her fanny on a “T” shirt?

          http://daviddangerous.blogspot.com/2013/09/modern-victorian-bathroom.html

          • MB30SD

First, now that’s some victorian I can climb into (see what I did there)

Second, I won’t ask how you ended up on ol dave’s site. Yikes!

        • MB30SD
        • Irish Sweetness

He’s doing spoons with her !!!

  • MB30SD
  • Johnathan Wood

I would go all-in for Hardy if he hits the open market. Only 25 and is a guy you can build your DL around.

Otherwise I would go for Linval Joseph. Young (25), huge body who is a perfect fit for the hybrid front (you need at least one big DT like that). Should cost probably about $6M a year, which is a good chunk of change but not hugely overpaying like you’d have to for the top non-Hardy DEs. Then look for your DE in round 1 (Ealy), re-sign Wootton, and sign some other veteran DE who will be cheaper yet a competent rotational guy.

In regards to S/CB, I am all in favor of finding bargain guys like they did at LB last year, then drafting rookies at those positions in rounds 2-4 to compete with them for playing time. I would love to see Bowman re-signed for maybe 2 years at $1M/yr or so. He was solid last year, and he can start until somebody you draft is ready to take over. A safety like Malcolm Jenkins could be a good option. He’s also younger (26) and should be had for not too much money. As a former CB, he’s pretty good in coverage.

    • Johnathan Wood

but generally it all starts with the DL. Remember, Wright/Conte looked like a good duo behind the stud DL in 2012. So all you need is competent safeties if you can get a good DL.

      • SC Dave

DL first. It’s every bit as important as OL was last season, and we all saw what that did.

        • Irish Sweetness

Yup – get the trenches right and good things will happen ….

  • Doooonnnn’t Caaaaare!

one of my buddies and I were trying to invent the next big thing in the NFL. Disclaimer: we had been drinking Jameson.
Everyone would like a huge 6’1 205 corner. What about a 6’1-6’3 215 – 220lb Nickel/LB/Corner Hybrid that would fucking manhandle smaller WR’s and TE’s off the line or destroy them after the catch?
Tweener LB’s or Safety’s with less range in college but with a lot of athleticism could be trained to drop or add a couple of pounds to accomplish this. They would lack top speed but with safety’s playing over the top you could pull a “seahawk” and molest the receiver so badly off the line that they can’t get into their routes.
Someone call a scientist and let’s make it happen.

    • MB30SD

they’ve already invented one of these, it’s called a Kam Chancellor.

and yes, I want one in orange/navy NOW.

    • Johnathan Wood

even a 220 pound CB/LB is giving up 20-30 pounds to most TEs.

    • SC Dave

      Um, Brian Urlacher 2.0?

      • Doooonnnn’t Caaaaare!

lol, Urlacher was a freak of nature and played at 255 to 260 while running like a huge safety. There may never be another like him. Too bad he got old and got shafted by Pringles in the minny game.

        • Guest

Yeah, I know. But young Brian would have fit that bill perfectly.

    • Irish Sweetness

We / every team needs a 6’3 corner. The tall receivers are becoming commonplace now. CBs have to adapt to the change .. .which is why the 6’2 Cromartie should be our first FA signing, regardless of what Peanut is doing.

      • MB30SD

So the top two FA safeties one of the top corners and a top dl.

Anything else I can show you guvnah?

  • MB30SD

look peoples, I’m on board with DL first and foremost. Using dave’s example below… you just have to be careful that you don’t have a fixed badass oline, with calieb hanie throwing to devin hester.

FIx the oline, but we have to make at least one big move in the Dbackfield, and my vote is to spend that shot on a FS either in FA or high up in the draft.

    • Johnathan Wood

I am all aboard the draft a S in round 2 train. I really like Jimmy Ward there.

Get a S in round 2, sign a competent vet (or 2) in FA, and let those guys (+ Conte, so 3-4 guys total) duke it out for the 2 S spots.

      • MB30SD

        in

        • Johnathan Wood

just to be clear, by “competent vet” I mean “guy with starting experience who was overlooked for some reason and will come cheap on a short-term deal.” Kinda like DJ Williams and James Anderson at LB last year, although I could see finding one you like who’s a little younger and giving him a longer deal at maybe $2-3M per year (I’m thinking somebody like Malcolm Jenkins, who’s a solid FS that is young and pretty good in coverage).

          • EnderWiggin

Correct. The last thing we need is another Zibikowski.

    • SC Dave

I am definitely not arguing against pursuing *at least* two safeties somewhere between FA and the first rounds of the draft.

    • Big Mike

The question I have is which position is better solved in Free Agency, vs the draft? A bunch of factors. Which provides a more game ready option? Which fits better with how much you want to spend at each level of the defense? I think Safety in free agency is the better play. We want a stud there on the field day 1. A guy that won’t come off the field. On the defensive line, you can draft 2-3-4 guys. DT, DE, hybrids etc. They’ll be rotational players even if they are rookie of the year candidates.

If you go the other way, you’ve got a safety with a learning curve and a free agent who still is only on the field for a percentage of the plays.

      • Irish Sweetness

Don’t like safety projects …. raising babies in your DBfield is not conducive to success, and another season with Major and Conte is not going to be good …. unless he’s a first rounder who will likely be a baller from day one. Ward and Byrd are there in FA – we can fix our safety problem in two signings right there. Draft the DL. Fresh legs and knees are better.

        • Big Mike

So it sounds like you are agreeing with me. Take the top safety you can in FA and build the D-Line through the draft.

  • MB30SD

hey NB, check out this for the kids: http://www.engadget.com/2014/02/17/moss-robot-kits/

    looks amazing.

    • NewBearInTown

My kids are probably a year or two away from that stuff MB, but yeah looks really cool. Pricey though – $150 for the basic set.

      • MB30SD

yeah, just thought I’d throw it out there. Seems like your 5 yr old would eat it up.

…and in all honesty, i was thinking you and I would have just as much fun with it. ha.

Also, for grampa plank and all the other dads.

  • MB30SD
    • Irish Sweetness

You’re bigger than the team and telling them where you will and will not play? Fuck that.

Goodbye Peanut – hello Rodgers-Cromartie (27). No hard feelings. Good luck.

Sign Ward & Byrd. Draft DL. NFC Championship game. Next.

  • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

Funny. I started working on such a piece because I didn’t think Jeff would address it. I wouldn’t go safety in FA, though I can see the argument for it.

  • Trac

Trying to figure out how many note worthy players the Bears will sign is a daunting task. With little money left to make a FA splash this year, I predict the Bears will stay home on big FA signing’s this year. My money goes on snatching up Roman Harper if the Saint’s release him.

    Team Needs Ranked by Position:

    Defensive End – Austin Lane

    Defensive Tackle – Draft

Safety – Roman Harper (Crossing my fingers)

    Punter – Draft

    • Johnathan Wood

Austin Lane has 3 career sacks. He was signed to a nonguaranteed 1 year contract. He will have an uphill battle in camp just to make the roster and is not likely to contribute much if at all next year. He is NOT their DE answer, and is not being counted on to be so.

Remember, official FA doesn’t start until March 11. The only guys you can sign right now are those who are not under contract, and those are by default 1-year minimum deals with no guaranteed money. All they guarantee is a spot in camp (assuming you don’t cut the player before then).

      • Trac

But what about Jeff’s thread? Say it ain’t so?

        • Johnathan Wood

Jeff’s thread talks openly about how he failed to make the 53 man roster for Jacksonville last year.

Think about that for a second.

          • Trac

I’m feeling punchy today. Looking at that list Jeff presented is not fair. I really don’t think Emery is going to keep signing FA’s on par with the last couple of years anymore. That’s not how you build a lock solid contender. That’s my take. If Emery spends too much dough, what’s he going to do when players like Alshon come up for renewal? It’s going to be pretty dodgy juggling the FA market with Team needs and future Cap implications.

          • Johnathan Wood

I expect to see several signing of guys on defense one year deals like what we saw with Slauson, Williams, and Anderson last year (also Ellis, but he retired).

Guys who can contribute without messing up your cap long term. That’s the reality of what they have to do right now after years of terrible drafting (seriously, their last good draft before maybe 2013 was… 2006? 2003?)

          • Johnathan Wood

the heart of the team should be guys you’ve drafted in the last 5-7 years. Unfortunately, very few people are left from Angelo’s last 3-4 drafts. Forte, Conte, maybe Wright/Wootton come back.

You should have several of your best players be guys you drafted in that range, but the Bears have a hole from 2008 to 2012 with basically NOTHING from the draft. So they need FA.

          • MB30SD

            COOOOONTTEEEEEE!!! (said like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRnSnfiUI54)

          • MB30SD

            Actually, let me change that…

            JEEERRRYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!

    • Irish Sweetness

Austin Lane ???? Dude!! You think he ever starts a game for us? Nah. We need Pep II. We need a first rounder. End of. We get our DBs in FA so there’s no learning curve for the kinder while teams dice us up back there …. grab DE/DT rounds 1 and 2. Grab our center in rd 3 … and after that I could care less.

We won’t be punting …. take Mr. Irrelevant. Get CD to punt. We won’t be punting next season.

  • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

Hey, J-wood, could you link that piece you did on the cap and letting guys like Pepp go? I don’t feel like looking through like 1,000 comments in previous threads. I was gonna cite it as a source in my piece.

    Thanks.

    • Johnathan Wood

some of the exact numbers for their current space are slightly outdated by now thanks to adjustments due to 2013 markers some players hit in their contracts.

But the potential moves to clear space all still apply. So in general, still not much room now, but a lot of options to clear space. That’s the important takeaway.

      Part 1: http://watercoolersportsnetwork.com/2014/01/27/current-cap-situation-chicago-bears-part-one/

      Part 2: http://watercoolersportsnetwork.com/2014/01/28/current-cap-situation-chicago-bears-part-two/

      • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

Thanks, j-wood. I realize the situation is fluid, but they’re still solid articles for the viewers to get a general idea.

Most readers don’t like reading numbers, but they’re nice to have for those who are gluttons for pain.

I remember reading “The Brief History of Time” and Hawkins relayed advice his friend told him, “The more equations a book has, the less it sells.”

      • Irish Sweetness

Are you still getting married Woodsy? Go to the wilderness. Go camping with a friend or two. Bring dried mushrooms, make some tea. Think really hard about it and the answer will come. Shiva will appear and she’ll be like “Duuuude …. like … no way.”

        • Johnathan Wood

You must have me mistaken with somebody else. I’m coming up on my 5th anniversary.

  • George Hernandez

Cut Pepp and sign Bennett and Joseph (or Arthur Jones as an “I’m Sorry” to the fans for passing on his brother Chandler) into his salary slot, Draft Clinton-Dix and at least 4 other defenders, sign Chris Clemons (Safety on the Dolphins), Resign Woot, Nate Collins and Bowman.

    • George Hernandez

Also, lets sign Jacoby Ford, he has elite speed and can take the top off a defense.

      • Doooonnnn’t Caaaaare!

Defense and only Defense my man. Why fuck around with the O when the D is the only thing that kept us from a deep playoff run?

        • johnnywad

This. Unless Emery finds a new Center and a Swing Tackle better than Ebon Britton lying around between his couch cushions. Jacoby Jones would be a waste of money at this point. No need to take the top off the D with “elite speed” when you have two complete, elite receivers.

          • NewBearInTown

ABAW. Always Be Adding Weapons. A true speed option from the slot is a great weapon to have. Wouldn’t spend major coin or draft high, but a value addition is always welcome.

          • Trac

Hi NB. Totally off subject but I was wondering if you still believe Messiah is coming? I would be interested in knowing how his lineage could be proven if all the ancient genealogy’s were destroyed when the Temple records were burned? Do you believe David will return?

          • Cormonster

Trac, I want to know if you like this song as much as I do. Gave me goosebumps. Yeah, I really like Carrie Underwood.
            http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=pLLMzr3PFgk

          • Trac

Thank you for that Cor. That was honey to my soul my friend.

          • Irish Sweetness

            Mwah!!!

I don’t know about David, Trac, but the guys that made us are already here.

          • MB30SD

            Our moms and dads?

          • Doooonnnn’t Caaaaare!

what if your slot guy was 6’4 195 and had Alshon type ball skills. That is Marquis Wilson. The kid is going to have a nice year. What 5’11 Nickel Corner is going to cover him?

          • Irish Sweetness

Kam or Sherman in the NFC champs game. We need to take their DE away by signing him.

          • Irish Sweetness

            NOTH.

          • Irish Sweetness

For Cheesy : That’s ” Nail on the head …”

          • Irish Sweetness

No offense is complete until you have the burner IMHO. The more arrows in your quiver … the more clubs in your bag … etc

Sny mentions of Devin Hester will receive ‘un slap a la tete’.

      • Irish Sweetness

        And this.

        A burner on O. Absolutely.

    • Irish Sweetness

      This.

  • Johnathan Wood

unrelated to FA, but I took a look at Jeffery’s season for anybody interested. Broke down his numbers by quarter to look at progression, also compared between QBs.

    http://watercoolersportsnetwork.com/2014/02/19/closer-look-alshon-jeffery-breakout-season/

    • Doooonnnn’t Caaaaare!

I appreciate your effort in the offseason for that kind of post. I just can’t get behind the statement that Jeffrey was a more productive WR with McCown. A simple reversal of 2 dropped passes for TD’s in the Lions game and the Vikings deep ball TD catch would all but even out those numbers wouldn’t it?
3 TD swing and a total of almost 120yds between the 3 catches.
I like that you accounted for the different variables and overall I enjoyed reading it.
      Super Bowl.

      • Doooonnnn’t Caaaaare!

simply by an out of context look at fantasy stats can you make that assertion. Technically it is correct.

      • Johnathan Wood

yeah, I know. Small sample size. I did point out that Jeffery made some incredible catches with McCown and had the two worst games of the season with Cutler. Maybe it was more to do with Jeffery than the QB.

I just wanted to see if the narrative was true. Statistically it was, somewhat, but not nearly as big as it seemed at first glance.

        • SC Dave

The numbers are what they are. McCown’s throw to Jeffery v Dallas was as perfectly placed a ball as can be imagined.

          • Irish Sweetness

Is my memory totally gone or did McCown hit Alshon 12 times and BM 10 times in one game ?

        • Irish Sweetness

Let’s not focus on the receivers … we have two great receivers … enjoy. Statistically McCown was playing on another level to Cutler. He’s the one signing I hope we make above all others – I just hope he’s under everyone’s radar. I’d almost be hoping Cutty gets injured, because (I think) we’re a better team under Josh. Cutty is 30 and he still hasn’t learned to respect the ball – and that’s why (I think) he hasn’t won anything. I don’t really hope Cutty gets injured – you know what I mean … most teams that lose their #1 get worse .. we might just be better.

Disclaimer : Not that any QB in history was winning anything with the defensive play we had this year. I want BOTH of them on our roster this season.

          • Johnathan Wood

McCown was statistically better but Cutler did a better job of consistently putting points on the board.

“The Bears will be well-represented at the seven-day gathering, with
Emery being joined by second-year coach Marc Trestman; assistant
coaches; staffers from the college scouting, pro personnel and video
departments; and doctors, trainers and strength coaches.

    After
arriving at the Combine, NFL prospects who suffered injuries in college
will be sent to a nearby hospital for an X-ray, and some who’ve had
surgery will be asked to take an MRI exam.

“A very important piece in the process is the medical aspect,” Emery said. “That can’t be overstated or undervalued.”

    The
players will also participate in position drills and be timed in the
40-yard dash, three-cone drill and shuttle run; tested in the vertical
jump and broad jump; and asked to bench-press 225 pounds as many times
    as they can.

“Seeing players perform under pressure and under the
glare of all the sets of eyes from the league and all the sets of eyes
on television tells us a little something about how the players prepare
and how they attack the task of getting ready for the Combine,” Emery
said. “It’s very much like attacking the task of getting ready for a
game. So it does tell us a lot there.”

    Emery values the
measurables, but the Bears general manager knows that there’s more to
evaluating football players than what they do in shorts and a t-shirt.

    “You
get a better idea of what the upper level of their athleticism is,”
Emery said. “So that’s very helpful. Some players do play faster on tape
than they do [running] in a straight line. That’s taken into account.
And if a player runs much faster than he plays on tape, you may just
have an athlete that can test really well but doesn’t translate well. So
    that gives you needed information.”

    • Johnathan Wood

One guy the medical stuff will be huge for is Dominique Easley, a DT from Florida.

He suffered ACL tears on both knees in college, but was otherwise viewed as the best DT in the draft when healthy. Could be worth a gamble in the 3rd round if he falls that far. Supposed to be a prototypical 3-technique: around 300 pounds, solid strength, and a devastatingly quick first step.

If the Bears don’t grab a DE in round 1, he’s one of several guys they could look at in the middle rounds. A couple other ones I like are Princeton DT Caraun Reid and Louisiana Tech DT Justin Ellis.

Reid is more of a 3-technique prospect. He’s about 300 pounds and expected to run the 40 in around 4.9.

Ellis is just a monster of a man. 340 pounds (good weight too), not gonna be much of a pass rusher but should be a good run stuffer. Comes from same school as Jordan Mills, wonder if Bears dip that way 2 years in a row. If they don’t sign Linval Joseph or draft a big DT in round 1, I would really like Ellis. Could be a nose in a 4-3 or 3-4, perfect big body for a hybrid front.

      • Doooonnnn’t Caaaaare!

        lol, 340. That’s huge.

          • Doooonnnn’t Caaaaare!

          • Irish Sweetness

            That’s a 15 yarder right there …..

      • Irish Sweetness

Wouldn’t suffering ACL tears on BOTH knees automatically take him off any draft board?

  • CanadaBear

Gotta go with everyone else. DT/DE in first rd. Preferably DT all things being equal. Safety or CB in second.

  • Irish Sweetness

Safety situation – Yes to Jairus Byrd *and* TJ Ward – sign ’em both. I like the idea of not having projects at safety so we can ‘win now’ (and they’re not ‘old’ guys). Safety position sorted.

Corners – Yes to Cromartie – a decent 6’3 corner would be nice. Sam Shields or Vontae Davis are interesting otherwise. Still love to see Peanut at Safety (no comments about his ‘fragility’ please – see Chris Conte). Aqib Talib is also obvious – but someone will whinge that “he’s not a Cover-2 corner” to which I will scream “HE’S A F**KING CORNERRRRR” …to which somebody will respond “… but primarily he plays man coverage …” – to which I will cut them off with “DOOOON’T CAAAAARE!”

Defensive End – Michael Bennett is obvious,as is Hardy. Johnson of the Bengals is Pep-sized. Lamarr Houston is a big-ass load.

BJ Raji ? Hmmmmm. Why not. We need at least one fat bastard on the line. Tired tired tired of having our DL controlled at the LOS because we’re a “fast mobile defense” .. .that sucks ballz on a weekly basis.

At this point I’d be pretty surprised if either safety reaches the open market. Up to 50% of this list might not IMO. If one of the safeties is available I’m very interested but I know theres a lot of other teams that will be pursuing them as well so I dunno how that plays out.

If we can’t get a safety I’d like to see us land one DB & one linemen (prioritized based on whose available, too hard to predict now). That should be enough to allow some flexibility in the draft on going mostly best defensive player available and not having to rely too many rookie DBs as day 1 starters.

    • Irish Sweetness

A new blog-ee, thank criminy! There’s like 12 of us now.

      Do you like aliens?

  • Johnathan Wood

A few interesting nuggets from Twitter reports of what Trestman said in his media interview at the combine:
    1) McClellin is now a SAM LB
    2) Expect to have a very young D
    3) Will have 4-3 base, but mold specifics of scheme around that based on the personnel they end up with
    4) Will be a defensive-heavy draft driven by their needs, but he didn’t rule out drafting an offensive player
    5) Conte will at least be in camp, but Trestman said he “has to get better,” meaning he will have to earn a starting job

    • Bender McLugh

      Good stuff

    • Johnathan Wood

apparently McClellin will work some at Mike too. Seems likely to me that McClellin and Bostic compete for starting SAM spot after DJ Williams is re-signed to be Mike (both Emery and Trestman have mentioned wanting him back). Loser of that competition is top backup for Mike/Sam, with Greene top backup for Will.

      • MB30SD

I hope we bring anderson back. He was out best LB by far while briggsy was out.

      • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

I was thinking the same. I haven’t checked out his presser yet, but I would like to see McClellin play some ILB.

Just because he can blitz doesn’t mean he’s stupid. He does show instincts to me, and I have a feeling he has the brain to understand D.

That’s just me though. No reason he can’t dabble in both.

        • MB30SD

or that emery’s just trying a last ditch effort to put lipstick on the pig and hope to trac’s god he’s not actually the total bust he really really looks to be?

          • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

Shea was doomed to be a bust at DE. I said it two years ago when Emery was trying to sell us how undersized DEs like Freeney succeeded.

I and everyone with eyes and a stop watch could see that Shea’s first step wasn’t even close to those guys. Was anyone surprised that OTs were stone-walling him?

Even WebbNation was having his way with him in the PS.

I still hold out hope for McClellin at LB. He’s 6’3 260 (probably more natural at 245-50). That’s a good size for a LB. He does show range and instincts. He’s just going to have to learn how to cover.

          • MB30SD

            should be interesting to watch.

            My prediction… pain.

…sorry couldn’t resist. My real prediction is that he’ll be riding pine and/or come in when we run some weird 2 rover nickle under package. whatevs.

          • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

Fo sho. I see something in Shea. I saw it on tape, and every so often, I see it in the NFL (Rodgers?)

I don’t blame him for failing at DE anymore than I blame Hester at WR.

And for those who say, “He’ll still have to disengage from offensive linemen” Well, anyone who’s played football knows there’s a huge difference between disengaging with fat boys from inches away, vs 5 yards.

Shea could use his speed, velocity, swim moves, agility…you know, all the stuff which made him good in college…to slip through.

            Afterall, I don’t see Matthews bull-dozing anyone.

          • Doooonnnn’t Caaaaare!

lol, I got this clip on youtube after typing in “Clay Matthews bull-dozing dudes”

I’m sorry but he makes Shea look like a highschooler.

          • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

Oh, I’m not saying Shea is anywhere close to Matthews. Matthews is far more explosive, but Shea can be serviceable at LB, unlike the utter dog shit he was at DE.

          • Irish Sweetness

I like him as our future Mike – always expected him to take over from Lac .. .and then it never happened.

          • Irish Sweetness

            1. He still looks like a big girl in a Pantene ad.

            2. If I’m on an offense against Matthews, I’m pulling him back by the hair as often as I can. Legal for you, you take him out of the play, but he’s likely to retaliate and give a fifteen yarder everytime. Win/win.

          • MB30SD

            Fuck clay mathews.

Yeah, that’s all I got. I’ve become such a blunt instrument. Sad really.

  • George Hernandez

    https://twitter.com/AdamSchefter/status/436497530520870912

Per Adam Schefter the cap will be roughly $130MM, the Bears will have an additional $7MM to play with not counting any restructures, cuts, extensions. Not sure where the extra money came from because the jump that was supposed to come from selling the Thursday night broadcast rights to CBS was supposed to occur next year. There is still an additional “spike” coming from the new DirectTV deal probably affecting the 2015-16 cap. I think Phil (who is well prepared) knew that this little bump was coming and gave Cutler a very high year 1 cap number on purpose. The Bears can sign a Bennett or Hardy this year and make the future cap hits larger knowing that 1) the next DirectTV deal is probably going to be massive and 2) Cutler’s future cap hits are reasonable compared to the expected cap number in future seasons.

    • Johnathan Wood

you have to consider that EVERYBODY has that extra money to spend now. Cap was expected to be $126M, now is gonna be $4M higher than that. So everybody has an “extra” $4M, which really will serve to inflate the FA market.

Cash-strapped teams will be able to use that money to keep the guys they want better (so CAR is much more likely to keep Hardy now, SEA Bennett, NO Graham, etc.). Therefore fewer top guys will hit the market, while teams will be sitting there waiting for them with more money. Less supply, more demand = I mostly want the Bears to avoid big FA contracts this year because they will be absurd.

      • George Hernandez

CAR has to worry about paying Cam and they already have premium $$ invested in one DE, they still have a suspect secondary. SEA will have to worry about paying Sherman (Who’s going to want Revis money) and Wilson soon. All these other teams have issues too. I agree that I don’t want the Bears to spend money for the sake of spending money, but Bennett isn’t going to all of a sudden be able to command Mario Williams money he will probably be paid as a top 10 DE (~$16MM Guaranteed) but that would have been the case regardless of the increase in the cap because there were at least 11 teams projected to have over $10M in cap room as of last week.

      • AlbertInTucson

“EVERYBODY has that extra money to spend now.”?

Even the Cowboys, who still currently sit at about $20M over that $130m cap ?

        • Johnathan Wood

well they still have $4M to work with than they would have at $126M. It’s an extra $128M total that can be spent this offseason. Most of it will be spent on free agents, who make up a pretty small amount of the NFL (at least in terms of FA who will get significantly more than the minimum).

        • Irish Sweetness

They’ll tell Romo they’re re-structuring his contract to give him more money by giving him 80% after subtracting 100% and paying him in Chinese Yuan to avoid inflation. He’ll be happy with that and it gives the Cowboys an extra 24 million dollars to play with.

      • Irish Sweetness

Then let’s assume Hardy/Bennett get signed by their teams. Okay, we get to sign Cromartie and a FS/SS, and still get to draft DE/DT/C in rounds 1, 2 and 3. Defense sorted. NEXT!

  • Johnathan Wood

Emery in his presser also mentioned wanting Melton back. Seems likely to be a matter of price now.

    • gpldan

Melton Cheese might have Tommie Harris Butter Disease when he gets back. His knee won’t hold against the stress of his already inflated frame, so it will buckle and he will be a 1-legged player out there.

Also known as Flatbreaddin’ after Paea, who is a 260 pound man in a 300 pound body thanks to modern nutrition and weight training, but is clearly outsized and was utterly a joke when both his legs weren’t 100%

I hesitate to call DJ Williams “young.” He’s on the wrong side of 30.

      • Johnathan Wood

also, McManis has hardly done anything but ST. I don’t really consider him a CB (kinda like Weems isn’t a WR).

But generally I agree with your plan. I would love to sign Joseph at DT, get Ratliff, Williams, Bowman, and Wootton back, add a mid-level S (I personally like Malcolm Floyd from NO, who’s only 26), and then a couple minimum-levelish guys with starting experience (1 more S, 1 more DE, maybe 1 more CB).

        • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

I explained the reasons why I would prefer a top DT in FA, but it’s not just price.

The DTs in the draft all have question marks, especially for what we might run. I’ll put up the draft piece up soon.

I could see us going a number of ways with those mid-tier FAs. I’m sure Tucker and Emery already have targeted more than a few.

      • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

True. I suppose he’s not all that young. I could see us going after another LB, but I think DJs experience, price and flexibility would complement our young LB corps (Shea, Bostic, Greene, draft pick)..

Or how about an article analyzing the ‘experts’ gameday predictions over the last season versus say Cletus Hugebody’s picks ….

Just a thought. Or two …well, two.

    • SC Dave

Your relative rating of Wright v Conte is full of shit. Conte is certainly no star, but he is definitely better than Wright.

      • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

Like I said, I differ in opinion than most on that (including PFF).

I feel like Wright can be a better player than Conte. He can hit. He’s been known to cause turnovers when we actually have a line.

But he can definitely be upgraded. Conte will only be around because he’s cheap and not an FA.

        • MB30SD

And we wanted TALL MOFO WRs – thank you ….and that Greg Olsen was the big blonde elephant in the room … and a total girl … and that our Left Tackles were dogshit until now … and that JWebb should not be in the NFL.

Jerry Angelo made approximately sixty million dollars off the Chicago Bears. Any one of us could have done a better job for a lot less. Wait … no … anyone …. could have done a better job.

Fans: He’d make a good linebacker
      Bears: He’s NOT A LINEBACKER
Fans: He’s not a very good DE
Bears: He needs to get better but he will
      Fans: Ok, he sucks
      Bears: He doesn’t suck
Fans: Alex Brown blames him for all the containment issues
Bears: Football is a team sport
Fans: Ok, but maybe he could take Urlacher’s spot
      Bears: He’s NOT A LINEBACKER
Bears: Ok, well maybe we’ll look at things, and he could be a Sam.
Fans: He’d be better at that
      Bears: Shut up
      Bears: Ok, he’s a Sam
Fans: He’s a bust, that’s what he is.

        the last one.

        • SC Dave

          We’ll see

          • MB30SD

sooooooo… he was a bust at his given position, but he’ll work out at a position he hasn’t ever really played?

hmmmmmm…. Sounds like conte/hardin theory all over again.

            Yep, should be interesting nonetheless.

          • Irish Sweetness

Strawman argument? His given position was not the one he should have been playing. This is the pros. Even an amateur know-it-all like me saw he was an OLB … or we thought/assumed that was why he was drafted …and then they made him play end week-in-week-out being man-handled by manly-sized men. Now I know there are plenty of 260lb ends out there BUT THEY’RE FAST!!!
He was an end in college, sure, but this is apples and oranges. He looks like an NFL linebacker .. .where he played in college is irrelevant now. We’ll see him shine now, I always thought he would … just not as an end.

          • MB30SD

Right. Makes sense to me. I’ve done software for most of my professional career, but fuck it, I think I’ll be better as a spot welder down at the docs.

Someone gimme one of those funny hats and a fucking blow torch right now!!

  • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

I think the additional cap will only affect the top FAs. They’ll probably get more cash because more teams will now bid on them, or teams that were going to bid on them now have more cash, but the mid-level FAs, esp the vets, won’t get much more.

Last two years were a ‘soft’ market, but I still expect a lot of 1 year vet min deals all around.

  • MB30SD

    OMFG!!

    http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap2000000326857/article/lovie-smith-buccaneers-will-consider-qb-at-no-7-pick

I literally can’t even watch this. My eye started to twitch, I started to get really anxious and angry. I turned it off.

Thank GOD he’s not our coach any more. Good luck with that Bucs.

    • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

      hahaha…go Lovie, go Lovie!

He might be doing us a favor. The Vikings are desperately looking for a new QB too right behind them. Hopefully, this talk will make the Vikings give a ransom to trade ahead of the Bucs.

      OR.

The Bucs draft a Qb, and the Vikes do something stupid and draft another Ponderish-QB.

      • CanadaBear

I think Lovie rolls with Glennon and they get an experienced (mediocre) backup. That’s Lovie’s M.O. Killer D and ST’s and hope for the best on O. Doesn’t want to pay QB’s big money and uses the rest for solid backups/STers.

    • Irish Sweetness

I absolutely guarantee Lovie goes with Manziel … and that he’s a gigantic bust. I wish I could bet cash on that. Glennon is decent and will be very good. Lovie is a clucking bidiot.

At least we don’t have to worry about the Bucs as long as LDL is down there.

Random : why didn’t we sign Mike Singletary a LB coach ?

      • MB30SD

I would love nothing more than for that prognostication to take place in reality.

Two idiots, one stone. Please jebus make this happen… wait, I just asked jesus to help me commit a sin didn’t I?

    Larry Fitz to Pats?

    • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

“Belichick recalled the first combine he ever attended, in 1985, when
the event was held outdoors at Arizona State University. Belichick was
in his first year as the Giants’ defensive coordinator and Perry was a prospect from Clemson.

“One of the days ended, not in total darkness, but certainly past
dusk,” Belichick said. “I still have the image of Refrigerator Perry
doing the vertical jump out there on the vertec in the middle of Arizona
State field in almost total darkness.”

So, for all those wondering what goes through Belichick’s mind
sometimes when he looks back over his distinguished career, there’s your
answer — a massive defensive tackle taking flight.

It’s strangely Belichick-ian. Some might even say fitting.”

    cut scene from Snatch?

  • Doooonnnn’t Caaaaare!

If Emery trades down I will fucking kill him.

    • Johnathan Wood

why? What if he trades down, picks up an extra 3rd, and still manages to get a top DE or DT?

they have holes all over the defense.

      • Johnathan Wood

Let’s say they hypothetically trade back to 18 or 19 for an extra 3rd.
        Grab Kony Ealy
        Jimmy Ward in round 2
then in round 3 you can take a CB and DT.

        • Doooonnnn’t Caaaaare!

I hear you man, we need fucking ballers though. It’s Grapes of Wrath out there in the NFL. I’ll take a vet on a minimum contract with NFL experience instead of a college kid that won’t even be in the league in a couple of years.

Once these guys realize that the gravy train can end they play for vet minimums. There are just too many solid vets floating around to float down and not get a total badass with a top pick.

          • Doooonnnn’t Caaaaare!

trade your shitty 4th, 5th and 6th rd picks to get another 3rd. Don’t move from 14. Our D earned that 14 spot. They fucked up impressively.

          • bearsfantillend

a lot of gems available in the later rounds, we need players. an extra 3rd is not going to help out much. would rather take the chance of getting a couple contributors in the later rounds than burn the pics to move up to 3rd. Remember we don’t have JA running the draft anymore.

          • Johnathan Wood

you realize a 3rd round pick has about half the chance of becoming a star as a 1st rounder? So if you pick up an extra 3rd and still have a 1st, you just increased your chances of getting a star player in the draft because you now have 4 picks in the first 3 rounds instead of 3.

So many people want to focus on round 1 of the draft, but all the rounds, and UDFA, are very very important. Just look at the guys the Bears might sign this offseason. The big money DL guys. Lindval Joseph went in round 2. Michael Johnson round 3. Greg Hardy round 6. Michael Bennett undrafted.

          • bearsfantillend

i understand the probabilities for star/contributing players for each round. but as you stated previously in this thread “The best teams are consistently drafting well, stockpiling picks, and getting quality depth in mid-late rounds.” we need depth, we need contributors, so i don’t mind trading down in the early rounds if we can get extra picks. Yes it would be great to to find a star in the late rounds but it is not necessary, give me guys that can contribute from late rounds. You don’t trade away half your draft to get a 3rd round pick, that is not how successful teams do it.

          • Irish Sweetness

Belicheat trades picks and players like piebald horses at the Galway fair. He ends up with armies of picks and builds rosters that way. He’s done pretty well. We don’t necessarily need ‘stars’ – look at the Seahawks. Get producers that play well as a team.

          • Irish Sweetness

It depends very much on who’s doing the picking.

          • Johnathan Wood

you don’t want to give up those picks at all. Need them to build up depth. The best teams are consistently drafting well, stockpiling picks, and getting quality depth in mid-late rounds.

          • Johnathan Wood

they say this draft is deep and the difference between 14 and 20 isn’t that great.

Draft is a crap shoot, so grabbing an extra semi-high pick increases your chances of landing some solid defensive players.

          • Johnathan Wood

Obviously you don’t trade down if there’s one guy you absolutely love and you’re worried you might lose him. But if, say, Ealy, Jernigan, Hageman, Clinton-Dix, Pryor, and Donald are all on the board at 14, and you have them all graded pretty evenly, why not trade back down to 18-20? You’re still getting one of those guys.

        • Irish Sweetness

No center ??? There is a 300lb elephant in the room my friends …. Garza is a massive liability on that line. Every chain is only as strong as its weakest link.
