Looking at the national anthem there – who’s the American dude that looks halfway between Rob Schneider and a Serbian war criminal?

  • John ‘GP’ Nada

Quick, before kick off – watch this again!

    • Irish Sweetness

Tank movie! Good. Shia LePuff. Bad.

      • Sactowns#1

Shia Ledouche can ruin anything. I dont think I’ll ever forgive him for what he did to Indiana Jones just like idk if I can forgive Joaquin Phoenix for making Johnny Cash look like he was retarded.

        • John ‘GP’ Nada

          The LaBuffe sucks.

If you go to the comments section of the Telegraph or Guardian, the amount of Brit hate for this film from frothing mouths is weird.

I think Anti-Americanism is taking hold in the UK.

          • Ppl I know who visited both London and Paris swore Londoners hate yanks more.

Wow, look at the Germans in the middle of the field! USA needs to go route one with the ball and hope for the best methinks.

  • Come on. Follow the script! The Allies are counting on us, as always! Stallone. Victory.

    http://youtu.be/xOxj26vcwMI

    • John ‘GP’ Nada

Well played half. U.S. kept the attack on, I don’t know if the Germans are doing a rope-a-dope in the heat and plan on coming out hard or they are just being passive for real.

      • The Anti-Blitzkrieg?

Yeah, they look lethargic. Or perhaps they just don’t think much of the U.S. team and feel they can turn it on whenever they want.

  • SC Dave

Well, so far so so. Germans controlling game and getting more chances. They are also beating us up physically. .. a mild surprise

  • This might be the only time the world actually CHEERS for the U.S.
It’s like when Vader picks up the Emperor and chucks him down the shaft.

    • SC Dave

      Funny analogy

    • John ‘GP’ Nada

It helps that the Germans decided that Black, Red and White (with no trace of yellow) is now a good look.

      • At least they didn’t go with the red arm bands. Wait, don’t captains wear arm bands? lol

  • Big Mike

have to admit, feel the tension watching this. USMNT holding up against what has been arguably one of the top teams in the Cup.

    • SC Dave

We need to control the ball more before they… shit

      • Big Mike

I ruined it. Reverse curse. Go Germany.

  • Fuck.

    • John ‘GP’ Nada

      THere it is.

        • SC Dave

Por gha tie sends us through

  • Zee Germans smell blood in the water. Or French in the pool. U.S. has got to make this game physical and take it to the lowest denominator. WWE style.

      Schweinstinzelmurburger is a flopper.

  • The Rastafarian is the enforcer? Maybe he grows out dreadlocks to throw refs off, like Deniro looking punk in The Taxi Driver. He probably listens to Pantera.

  • SC Dave

    Our attack is pathetic

    • What attack? They’ve been back-pedaling the whole half.

      • SC Dave

The one where we kick the ball too far and the german keeper picks it up

  • Trac

Our boys look gassed. The extra Day off seems to have helped ze Germans.

    • IF we had depth, I would say to get guys off the bench.

  • Trac

Hate to say it but we look overmatched and outplayed.

    • The U.S. looked okay the first half. Maybe it is that they’re tired.

      • SC Dave

Actually, the germans totally dominated possession the entire game so far. We cannot lose by more than one.

    • SC Dave

Well they *are* better than we are. But I’m looking for a miracle equalizer

  • Jones and Bedoya doing their two-stooges act.

  • I don’t know enough about soccer, but doesn’t the U.S. have a hungry young buck on the bench with schwag, in the Johhny Football mode? We need some of that.

  • Gooooalll. By Por. 2-1

I’m supposing we play Belgium in the knockout round?

    • Bender McLugh

Yep. One and done very possible.

      • Big Mike

Are they good? Germany was supposed to be one of the best teams? We played close.

        • Trac

Let’s just say that Belgium was supposed to win their group. We weren’t.

      • Farther than the Italians, Brits, Portuguese, and Spanish got lol.

        • Trac

  • Bring on the Belgians and their shitty beer. – Jeff Tweet.

I actually don’t fancy German beer. Maybe it’s because I don’t like lagers much.

    • Shady

    • Cormonster

I love German beers. They make many great pilsners, Weiss beers (wheat), and Octoberfest beers.

    • Irish Sweetness

Shitty beer? ‘Palm’ is the best beer I ever tasted, by some degree. Brewed by Belgian monks. Nectar of the Gods.

I used to live in Bavaria. If you like clean beer, German beer is the best in the world by design. Reinheitsgebot. Only water, barley and hops allowed. Translation : drink as much as you like … no hangovers.

  • That didn’t take long. Some are implying that ze Germans and the Americans colluded.

    That never happens, right Irish?

  • Trac

This was one of those games where I could care less about watching the highlights. lol

    • Irish Sweetness

This is allegedly where the Greys or Reptilians live/lived, and have lived for a very long time. I thought it would be a bit much for the blog so I never bothered. People tend to disagree with the idea of aliens being here on the basis of the speed of light and interstellar travel and – so if they already live here, inside the earth, then that one’s off the list.

Evidence? Well there’s that huge subterranean city, Derinkuyu, that was found in Turkey – carved perfectly out of rock, intricate ventilation systems, careful understanding of load bearing architecture and clearly a stretch for humans to accomplish currently. Worldwide news? Worth a spot on TV? Nope. Buried.

If Derinkuyu was not built by E.T. ….. it’s a feat equal or greater to the pyramids. If it was used by E.T. – was this the home of the biblical Nephilim ‘giants from the stars’ ?

Alexander Sitchin has wonderful ideas based on early markings and language – evidence of alien overlords in our history, and once he dies you’ll never hear about this stuff again. The kids aren’t learning early cuneiform in college – it’s not a growth industry exactly.

    Too much?

    • CanadaBear

      Maybe just a little!

      • Trac

But Canada, 38 games evra year. 38!

        • CanadaBear

YIKES! I think it’s great that so many people are passionate about soccer but it’s never gonna be my thing.

At some point I could see soccer being more popular than baseball in the US. Young people seem to really embrace soccer and all the old farts hang onto baseball. If corporate america got behind soccer instead of baseball, all those baseball players would make a lot less money.

          • Big Mike

Baseball is so freaking boring… Love taking a game in live. Kids in the DC area are leaving baseball to play lacrosse. Faster, hitting, not so much standing around.

          • CanadaBear

Live it’s great. I can only watch a few innings on TV at a time or else it’s lights out. Being into bike racing I try not to hammer on other sports too much. Even I know bike racing is boring as fuck unless you’re a nut.

          • My Bro-in-law is trying to get my nephews into Lacross. Says there’s a better chance of getting a scholarship to college that way lol

          • Big Mike

Its true. My son’s a very good athlete. Exceptional actually, stand out football player through youth ball and his freshman year. 2nd in tackles on an undefeated Freshman team as a rover (safety/LB) for a program that won the VA 6A (biggest) division state championship. Next year, couldn’t get on the field at JV. Fast, tough, smart, but 5’10 155-160. Not RB fast, Not WR fast. 4.8 40. In LAX, he’s a badass. Starting varsity.

          • Maybe get him into le soccer?

I probably would have faired better in Lacross, Soccer, even Baseball (which I was an all-star), but Jordan and the Bulls made me love Bball so much, that all my energy went to that, and some football. I was Varsity Bball, but I was ‘only’ 5’9.

Soccer and Lacross weren’t even in the discussion in the 90s for a real athlete. They were sports those weird guys played you never even knew went to the same school.

Now I wish I had played those.

          • Big Mike

He’s on the varsity bball team. Never kicked a soccer ball in his life

          • johnnywad

            Soccer blows

          • johnnywad

Leaving first thing in the morning to take my son to a lacrosse tourney in Louisville. He’ll be a freshman this fall and has given up all other sports to focus on lacrosse. I love the game and would have really liked playing it as a kid had it been around. If your kid’s coordinated and quick, it’s a perfect fit, especially if the injury aspect of football bothers you as a parent.

What position does your son play? Mine’s the X Attack.

          • Big Mike

He plays midfield. He also plays d-pole. He’s scored a few goals as the d-pole that’s fun.

He’s been to a few camps. One at the naval academy.

He picked up LAX in 8th grade. He told me baseball was just too boring. He’d actually get out of shape during baseball season.

          • johnnywad

Same with mine. He gave up baseball and picked up lacrosse in 4th grade. Crazy stick skill but Osgood Schlatter in the knee is keeping him in one end of the field. I actually got to assistant coach two seasons with another dad that played at Annapolis. I had never played but followed his lead and got to know the game pretty well.
If you’re in the DC area, you’re really in the epicenter of the game. Kids from our area get scholarships to D2 schools everywhere but only one is playing on the east coastcoast at a D1 school, and he’s just a preferred walk on. Sounds like he’s getting money next year though.

          • Big Mike

My boy will be a jr next season. He’s getting some looks. A lot of exposure at tournaments at the university of Maryland, UVA. private school camps and some very competitive leagues. He’s got a long shot at d-1. 1aa decent shot

          • MB30SD

            Heh heh… d pole… that’s what she said

          • Big Mike

Only a matter of time before someone said that.

  • John ‘GP’ Nada

So the Supreme Court’s argument against Aereo was that you can’t take something that is given away (local city HDTV broadcasts, mandated under other legislation) and then charge people to consume it outside those areas. That’s taking something free and making money from it. This was the foundation of the majority opinion.

I guess somebody should tell all those bottled water companies draining the Great Lakes that what they are doing is illegal. I won’t hold my breath for that.

    • Trac

      Water is not free.

      • John ‘GP’ Nada

It is, and often has been.

        http://www.treehugger.com/corporate-responsibility/florida-to-charge-bottled-water-companies-by-the-gallon.html

Florida simply got around to charging Nestle from draining that well because they needed revenue.

Michigan taxes Nestle, but it’s a flat tax and not per gallon. That’s no different than property tax paid by Aereo to set up antennas.

        • Trac

I figured they would have had to pay a water tap fee unless it was on private land. I still remember thinking how stupid it was of people to pay for bottled water when it was commercialized in the 80’s outside of Perrier. Brilliance, sheer brilliance.

        • Irish Sweetness

Satan pays a flat tax, and you know he got a sweet deal.

        • Sactowns#1

It pissed me off to no end when Sacramento granted Nestle the right to bottle a vital resource and sell it. There are just a few things people cant survive without, should we really let private corporations controll and profit off of these? I cant wait to start paying for oxygen.

    • AlbertInTucson

I think the court was 2 for 2. ESPECIALLY the 9-0 “Get a warrant” ruling on cell phones. Aereo was flaunting copyright law. Piss on them.

      • Does the gov need a warrant for emails?

        • AlbertInTucson

Not, apparently, if you are the NSA. Unless, of course, it’s Congessional emails. THEN we get mad about it.

          • Needless to say, the Gov SHOULD require a warrant for emails too. I heard that they gather nearly all electronic info and store it in big mega-computers in Utah or something.

I almost assume they GOV can pull up my search history, emails, hack into any account (including this one), if they wish.

Seems un-american for citizens to feel that way.

          • AlbertInTucson

And it ain’t THAT hard to get a warrant, anyway.

          • Irish Sweetness

It’s beyond doubt at this stage. It’s certainly happening in a certain powerhouse European country that just rained on your parade. I have it secondhand from a guy in their shadowy sector that they collect everything and censor all printed newsmatter. I don’t know about internet news – way harder to control.

          • Irish Sweetness

Snowden blew the top off all that. The evidence is out there that the NSA/CIA are reading/collecting EVERYTHING. Who controls the servers? You think there’s no black ops with their fingers in a lot of pies?

        • Irish Sweetness

          Nope. 9/11.

George W removed almost every last vestige of freedom from the USA. The Patriot Act and Homeland security combined with Bush’s Executive orders mean they can record and read your emails, phone conversations, kick your door down, incarcerate you indefinitely, do whatever the fuck they want to do when they want. Citizens effectively all become potential ‘terrorists’, similar to what happens when the Emergency War Powers Act is in effect.

Side note : I would like to hear from any constitutional lawyers as to when exactly the last Emergency War Powers was last lifted. I think in 1972 the Supreme Court last asked the nation officially if it was aware that EWP was still in effect after 40 years, and was anyone going to lift them. There was no response, and I don’t believe there has been any mention of it since.

If that is in indeed the case, then the U.S. constitution has allegedly been suspended since about 1933 – when the Fed took ownership of you and your land and endebted you to them forever. The gold trim on the flags in your courtrooms signifies they are Maritime law flags – flown under EWP – and that the U.S. constitution holds no jurisdiction there. Under this system, all citizens are listed as “enemies” of the state, and have no rights. I would like to know from any constitutional lawyers where any of this is in error, as information found on the internet is not gospel

  • Trac

It continues. Now the plaintiffs in the Redskins name change lawsuit want the Chiefs to change their name too.

    • MB30SD

Morons. Starting to get a fuck you from this side.

      • John ‘GP’ Nada

Since Native Americans find Indians offensive (that idiot Columbus thought he had reached India) – I guess Cleveland Indians needs to go.

Atlanta Braves. Probably, as the word Brave is an english annunciation of the word they used for warriors.

then, of course, they will come for the Hawkce.

        • AlbertInTucson

Probably splitting hares for the do-gooders but the Blackhawks are named for an individual, Chief Black HawK of the Nez Perce I believe, not a tribe.

          • CanadaBear

My favorite has always been the Pekin, IL. H.S. teams years ago (The Chinks). When they changed it to the Dragons I can remember everyone being pissed and trying to rationalize why it wasn’t derogatory. Now I’m guessing only the oldest of farts waxes nostalgic over the old name.

I remember renting a cabin outside Rhinelander a couple of times back in the day. Loved the area. Never could figure out what a Hodag was. It seemed like a giant salamander with a bad attitude.

          • Cormonster

Beautiful area. My parents retired about an hour northeast in Upper Michigan. I go camping in the area every year since I was a little kid. Nice, secluded lakes are everywhere.

          • Cormonster

Black Hawk was a Sauk Indian originally from Illinois, who fought on the British side in the War of 1812. He was pissed off about a treaty that pushed his people west of the Mississippi into Iowa, which caused a lot of friction and skirmishes. The Black Hawk War started later in the 1830’s. I think Honest Abe fought in this war. Black Hawk’s warrior party eventually got ambushed and taken out where the Bad Axe River runs into the Mississippi River just south of where I live . There is a town close by nestled along the Mississippi named Victory, named after that battle. A nice state park close by is named after Black Hawk. It’s called Black Hawk park (go figure?) From what I’ve read over the years, he was considered a great military mind.

        • You forgot Chiefs. Like when a cop pulled me over one time, “Where’s the fire, chief?”

          http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/06/26/plaintiff-in-redskins-patent-case-urges-chiefs-to-change-their-name/

Indians should go, but ‘Braves’ ? Just means ‘Warrior’. Keep that one.

        • johnnywad

The Indians are already quietly working on it. Chief Wahoo’s smiling caricature face is slowly being removed from everything and replaced with the block C. Cleveland sucks at pretty much everything but they’re in front of this one.

  • SC Dave

Midfielder Defour sent off for Belgium, which is good for us if he is one of their better players.

Blogfather Tweet: “5 of 5. Klinsman has built a USMNT that is not only a joy to watch but makes you believe they belong on pitches w/world’s best. Wow.”

I dunno, feels like to me the “backed in” to the knockout phase.

    • Trac

It must be the beer. Lol.

    • AlbertInTucson

Meh, upon further reflection, had they gotten PUMMELED by the Germans, they’d have been knocked out via the “Goal Differential” so, I hereby retract my “backing in” comment.

      Yay, USA.

      • John ‘GP’ Nada

Point taken, they were totally outclassed. It’s hard to understand until you watch.

Zee Germans just played to avoid stupid mistakes, like getting players carded and missing future games. They had the game the whole time, this US team is not competitive with the top teams – it’s an also ran. Beating the Orange would be amazing.

        • MB30SD

I do think we have a pretty good shot against the tiny country that makes really good beer and has a very pretty town in the northwest.

        • Irish Sweetness

They kept most of their players behind the point of attack in a diamond. Awesome. Tough to break through. Jack Charlton’s success with the Irish team of the late eighties and early nineties was based on route one balls (although many thought it was a sleight to the quality of his players, some of whom were already legends). When facing greater opposition it’s the best policy. Nobody likes dealing with high balls into your own box, it’s dangerous and unpredictable. Put them under pressure, as Jack used to say. It worked like a dream for us. Be strong at the back and then then just fire them upfield. Ironically, we had world-class players back then and didn’t need to resort to those tactics, but that’s how Jack played.

Route one would have worked well for the USA last night.

          • MB30SD

No one likes dealing with high balls into your own box.

            …that’s what she said.

(Yes, this is the depth and breadth of my material at this point in the summer)

    • Irish Sweetness

I thought you guys had a great tournament and lost nothing in defeat. The only thing missing from a draw or outright USA win in 90 minutes was one-touch passing in the box. Guys were trying to take possession of the ball and steady themselves – there’s no time for that these days. Has to be one-touch – that’s what the top guys get paid the big money for. Only way you get that is by never letting the football out of your sight as a kid. You have to grow up with a football in your hand or at your feet. If the USA can find two or three guys like that you can play with anybody.

Losing 1-0 to a very good German side in the WC? Definitely worth celebrating.

Can you even fathom ever having to live with that so-called woman? Every day would be like hell. Not sure if I ever used this evil word on this here blog, but she is a cunt. (along with Keith Olberman, Sean Hannity, Rachel Maddow, Anderson Cooper (NTTAWWT), etc, etc, etc.

      • CanadaBear

Anyone that spews poison 24-7 has to have a serious case of self-loathing.

    • Irish Sweetness

      ‘New American’s’ ? Eh … isn’t that YOU Ann ?

“Coulter” – is that a WASP name from GB&IRE by any chance ? .. YOU ARE FOREIGN !! @$$%!

      • MB30SD

She’s a fucking alien. How’s that for your proof my mainjses

  • AlbertInTucson

Thank you, Supreme Court, for smacking this President up side the head today.

    • Cormonster

That’s surprising. Isn’t Obama a Constitutional Scholar? After all, he taught that subject at the University of Chicago for over ten years. He was previously the head of the Harvard Law Review. Haven’t you read about his brilliance in the field of law from former students and professors? I’m sure it’s there, but I haven’t been able to find anything that he ever wrote that could give some insight into his beliefs. As a matter of fact, I’ve never read anything he ever wrote regarding the law. Hhhhmmm.

      • AlbertInTucson

And all of his Harvard records are sealed.

      • CanadaBear

I know you don’t like Obama but let’s be honest. The Supreme Court is not exactly unbiased. Don’t get me wrong, Obama isn’t great but there’s plenty of blame to go around on both sides.

        • Trac

You Sir, deserve a break today. Well said.

        • burntorangenavyblue

I believe 3 or 4 of the judges are Obama appointees, so that’s good that they can not be swayed by him.

I’m a big believer of being true to the law and constitution of our country, however, some laws are surely outdated and/or just bone-headed laws. I’m a middle of the line guy, so if I see either side of the aisle doing something that does not promote the quality of life for this country, then I do not have a problem disagreeing with it.

The fact that law makers make rules that enables the House and/or Senate to simply make things more difficult for anyone to do their job in the name of partisan politics just drives me nuts.

Making a member of the legislature appear every other day to make a “session” happen, when no one is there, no one can vote or speak their mind on anything…AKA, Nothing Happens!; should never be considered a session. Yes, Obama should have seen that, but, to what purpose does that serve if there’s an emergency appointment needing to be done? Why have that rule? Just say, “Ok, the President shall never appoint anyone, ever. Let Congress do it all completely, since the other party will do the same tactic if the Presidential winner is a different party member”

I should just get my passport to Canada and move to my wife’s family in Toronto.

  • AlbertInTucson

I’m sorry, but the new NBA commissioner looks like he just stepped out of a UFO.
    A CARTOON UFO at that.

    • Sactowns#1

When he walked out on stage (I was at the bar and they had this crap on TV) I told my girl I had seen him in a movie before. I think it was Schindlers list. Somebody give the man a sandwich and a blanket!

      • MB30SD

Was that an anti-semitic comment!? From the chief (no offense meant) of blog race police?!?!

        Hahahaha

  • Trac

I’ve got a scenario for you GP.

People’s lawns grow, costing the lanscaper nothing and yet they are able to harvest them for profit and the grass costs them nothing.

Tell me oh mighty Swami, is this fair?

    • johnnywad

That’s so different from broadcasting football games its impossible to compare.

      • Trac

I know. Just being a twit.

        • johnnywad

This is what happens when there’s no football.

    • John ‘GP’ Nada

In both those cases, the model of waste removal applies. The overgrown grass, while still living and growing, can be considered unwanted by-product of a nice lawn, so you pay to have it trimmed and removed. Same with shit.

In neither case are you taking a resource endemic to the environment and moving to another environment and profiteering from the act of transportation. In those cases, you are profiting from the labor to dispose. The grass clippings and liquid shit have no value.

In my analogy nothing is being taken from private property. Nestle was draining a public reservoir. Aereo was plucking signal from the air and re-transmitting over a different medium.

A better analogy is: Can you go to the Gutnberg Project, download a book, print it on a printer, and sell it at a garage sale? Yes or no?

Keep in mind that HAM Radio operators routinely put music from local radio stations up so people from other nations can listen in, and accept donations for doing so.

  • johnnywad

Let’s play some football already. I’d kill for even a preseason game right now. Soccer and baseball just don’t cut it.

    • John ‘GP’ Nada

I actually counted the days until Bourbonnais

      • CanadaBear

        AND??!!??

        • John ‘GP’ Nada

And I have signed footballs from DJ Moore and Sherrick McMannis. This year I was hoping for a Forte or a BM, but the 2nd string secondary always gets the crap duty of talking to bleacher fans.

I was going to have Hub sign a ball, but I figured if I asked, he’d just flip me off.

          • CanadaBear

Do you and Hub have some history or is Hub just a knob? I always enjoy your camp reports. Hope you’re going this year!

          • John ‘GP’ Nada

No, no history. The last two camps as he walked by, I asked to have a pic taken with him in the nicest, most polite way, and both times I got a giant FU look as he passed by.

I never got it. the guy is broke and on the Score like 8 shifts a week with two shows to work it off, all he has is fans, and he just looked at me like I was a douchebag. Granted, I *am* a douchebag, but he still could have said yes.

          • CanadaBear

            Hub is definitely a knob.

          • Hub, the LeBeuff of journalist?

          • You need to buy the last PFW hardbound edition. Make him sign that.

          • John ‘GP’ Nada

LOL. I’d put his reaction on Youtubez at 60fps just so we could all super slo-mo it.

  • Irish Sweetness

On our ancient history and archaeological finds not recognised by academics as their implications are cray cray, this guy Michael Tellinger is excellent. Evidence of ancient power grids based around the mining of gold. The Annunaki. Tall. Blond. Ring a bell? Evidence that Stone Henge is at least a million years old … mind-blowing stuff on the structures on this earth they never told you about.

    • Trac

Are you talking about the dude that always looks like he just did a line or stuck his finger in a light bulb?

I’d much rather you give another lecture on the fed.

    • MichiganBearFan

I love me some Ancient Aliens. I think everything is far more awesome than what academics tell us.

      • In fairness to the Academics, they can’t go around teaching that Tall Blonds are doubling-down in Vegas.

    • Greene looked MORE lost than Bostic.

IT was either the crappola Dline (Anderson began sucking too once the Dline and Briggs went out)
or Bubba Gump D.C., or they both suck (or all of the above).

I’m hoping Greene, Bostic and Shea become studs, but I’m not holding my breath.

          • johnnywad

It is but I still do it. Both of my grandfathers went to war. I feel I have to at least show up and vote to honor their sacrifice. I know it probably will never make a difference. I just feel I owe it to them and others like them.

          • MB30SD

good for you. If I thought it did a single damn thing, I would too.

That said, if I’ve had time to do research and not do something stupid, I do vote on the ‘small’ stuff.

not bad. I like markie mark.

Yeah, there was one behind me (I drive a pathfinder) and I literally couldn’t see it. I didnt know it was behind me thing has a very low profile.

  • If you want to listen to something tonight, maybe you’re tired of the tele and are burnt out on bands, check this out. Art Bell interviews Michio Kaku, the Japanese physicist you see everywhere.

He talks a lot about very relevant and vital info about the human condition, physics, extinction, and yes, aliens.

    • One thing that I found really interesting was how he categorized species/civilizations.

The other argument he makes which I wholeheartedly agree with is that we NEED to go to Mars (or some other planet) to begin teroforming or colonizing.

Obviously, for the sake of survival (Michio talks about the possibility of a supernova ALREADY on its way).

But also for a more practical level, overpopulation and politics, but I wont’ get into that now.

      • Trac

Wouldn’t we have to go outside our Solar system to escape the impending doom?

I propose we build floating cities above the clouds. It would be so pretty and dreamy too.

        • John ‘GP’ Nada

A supernova shockwave would fry everything inside the Oort Cloud. It would be game over. Mars, shmars.

That said, there are no stars we know of near us in danger of going supernova for millions of years. If this guy is going to claim otherwise, then he should name the star.

Tyson addresses this in Cosmos. Anything past 1,000 LY and it’s shock isn’t going to do anything. That gives you places like:

Alpha Centauri, Sirius, Vega, Fomalhaut, Arcturus, Antares, Pleiades open star cluster, etc. Again, no star has been identified in Astronomy in danger of collapsing near us.

As for going to Mars ASAP – sure. Mankind has to eventually figure out ways to travel 1,000 LY or more and survive space radiation. May as well start now.

          • For your consideration….

in the meantime, here in this galaxy, any ideas for a cheap smart phone that can handle larger pdf files that doesn’t cost 200 or more? i’m ok with refurbished but just can’t stomach spending a ton of dough because a simple iphone 3 lasted for years. any ideas or websites appreciated

          • johnnywad

My kid got a used Droid from Craigslist for $100. Works great

          • For your consideration….

in the most surreal “1st world problems” situation i’ve been around in quite a while. I’m buying a 79.00 Nokia Lumia phone just to get me through the week while a new phone is shipped and the 14yr old girl next to me with her mom throws down the black amex for a 1,199.00 unlocked iPhone 5s because she’s “always on social media”. The Best buy worker making 13.00 an hour was visibly disgusted.

          • For your consideration….

and i will be using this 79.00 phone to secure deals worth quite a bit of money. She will be using her 1199.00 phone to sext pictures of herself to Timmy from English Lit.

        • Actually, it was a gamma “shotgun” radiation blast which is pointed at earth which may or may not have gone off already, but surely will either tomorrow or in a million years.

Don’t know if it would kill mars too, but better safe than sorry.
