• Johnathan Wood

I would be highly surprised to see Donald gone before 14. We’ll see, I guess. He definitely had a highly productive college career. The size scares people, but the athleticism… oh my

  • Bender McLugh

Here’s another official highlights of him:

  • MB30SD

Damn. First time seeing his highlights. Totally dominant. .. against dogshit teams. Did they play anyone real?

Kid looks like the reals deals though.

    • gpldan

+1. Blowing up New MExico’s line is nothing. But he looks young Tommie Harris-ish.

    • el_caney

about my last post, yes. team needs new incumbents in D and no time to develop players. because already has a settled offensive. the most picks in rounds 1-3 the best. in order to reduce the curve of learning. we know, unless you are angelo, 4 to 7 would be special teams and bench at best. and teams know that we are focus on defense this year and with all the cream in QB, WR, OL would entice a gambler to make a deal with us.

  • MB30SD

    Jeff… uhhh… what were his #’s maing?

Now I have to go to the shitty Combine site and fucking dig for the right stats. Hate that site.

  • MB30SD

    ho-ly-sheite muslim!

6’5 270, and a 4.4 40 time. Wow man. Duds is superhuman. Too bad he doesn’t give a shit about football.

Warren Sapp 100% right for a change. btw, at the very end of the vid you see donald running his 40: http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/jadeveon-clowney?id=2543456

Oh, and jernigan and hageman both ran juuuuust under a 5.0. Ouch

    • gpldan

270 for a 3-tech? You know who else was undersized and had awesome off the ball speed? Flatbread.

How about we draft a guy with the frame and power to carry 310 easily, even if he doesn’t have Wilbur Marshall’s speed? Because Soldier FIeld is a god damn mud hole, and I’d rather have the relentless force than the guy who needs to use the Deacon Jones head slap to beat his man.

      • MB30SD

I have to agree. If donald was one of saban’s kids (is that the name of his charitable foundation?) and had the same results, I’m ALLLLLL in. Beating up on New Mexico’s line is like russia beating the jamicans in bobsledding. Meh.

So who’s the hands down DL pick at #14 (if there were such a thing)? Are we gambling no matter who we take? Donald, Jernigan, Hageman? They’re all faster, smaller guys right?

See where I’m going with this… I’m very sneakily trying to make an outside case for Pryor at #14, who looks to be the real deal at FS without any size/speed/scheme questions whatsoever. Solve our chronic 10-year FS problems in one pick so we don’t have to even mention it for the next 5 years. Even if the guy turns out to be just pretty good, he’ll look like fucking mike brown/plank/duerson/lott to all of us.

Yes, I know we all want to sure up the DL first and foremost, and that it will heavily depend on what we can do in FA, and what happens between now and then AND what goes down at picks #1-13, but you have to take the guy with the least ?’s at your pick right?

I haven’t done enough research to know if any of the 3 DLs we’ve been talking about are enough of a sure thing with a brand new D scheme, but I know pryor can easily be our franchise FS for years to come. Just sayin’.

Is there’s question marks… we must pass on the larks.

        • Johnathan Wood

Hageman is not undersized. He’s 315 pounds.

          • MB30SD

ah, right. I knew one of them was big.

So what’s his knock again? I’m starting to get them all mixed up/don’t give a shit till draft day.

Hmmmmm… doesn’t sound like a ringing endorsement to me maings: http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/ra'shede-hageman?id=2543478

Especially the, “needs more glass in his diet” comment. Yikes!

Just kidding, I have zero idea what that means. “Has green eyes”. This scout speak is awesome though. GP, can you please get up to speed on the scout lingo then drop an amazing AdLibs type post all in scout-speak? 1M blog points on the line (see how I did that… on the line).

          • Johnathan Wood

Hageman is the single most physically gifted DT in the draft this year. The knock on him is that his production didn’t always match up with his gifts. He’s still pretty raw due to a late switch to DT from offense.

          • MB30SD

uhhhhh… from offense. Totally different mindsets in my experience. I’m still putting my hat in the ring wanting pryor. Boom!

          • Johnathan Wood

for what it’s worth, Donald’s first 10 yards (1.59) almost matched Clowney’s (1.56). That shows the explosion Donald has in the interior.

        • Irish Sweetness

Drafting a safety in the first means you get a shittier DE/DT in rds 2-3 though? We’re pretty much punking our DL draft right there. I’m all for getting our safeties in FA. No learning curve, no babysitting. Win now.

          • MB30SD

I’d be ok with that, but we don’t know if two good ones will be available… and the best FA safety might be a SS (Hittner)… who I def think we should get if we can.

Like I said, there’s a lot of green between now and the #14 pick… I just wanted to bring up the point that there aren’t any questions about pryor (yet) and our need for a franchise FS at some point in the past/future 20 year period.

          • Johnathan Wood

I absolutely love Jimmy Ward in round 2. Instinctive safety who just has that it factor. Think he’s gonna be a star.

          • MB30SD

            ok, so you are going:

1 – Donald (or Hageman… or worst case Jernnigan)
            2 – Ward

            Final answer?

Just found out two things: 1. he played at NIU, 2. he’s a SS not a FS. We need a FS (don’t think one will come on the market in FA)

          • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

Somewhere, inexplicably, Conte gets a sharp pain in his ass every time MB mentions the Bears need a FS.

          • Johnathan Wood

I want them to sign Malcolm Jenkins from NO in FA. Should be moderately inexpensive, he’s only 26, and he’s definitely better than Conte.

I would go Ealy in 1 and Ward in 2 (or Buccanon if Ward is gone). Best CB available in round 3 (plus best DT there if you can trade back in round 1 and pick up a 3rd).

          • Irish Sweetness

Jairus won’t hit the market ?

We make him our big FA signing, draft Donald and move him to DE, draft Ward … is there a decent and sizeable DT to be had in the third … or an affordable FA at DT?

          • Johnathan Wood

I have a hard time seeing big FA $$ being spent on a S. DL is a bigger priority, Emery has said as much.

          • MB30SD

no, they say byrd and ward probably won’t hit the market. They’ll either get a deal done or will get tagged. Who knows though. Here’s the list as of right now: http://www.rotoworld.com/articles/nfl/45947/309/2014-nfl-free-agents?pg=2

I agree with $ that we should pick up Whittner at SS and be done with that mess.

            For me it’s this:

FA: Whittner (SS), some other big End or DT

            Draft:

            1. Donald, but if he’s gone we take Pryor at FS

            2. Best available DE or DT

            3. Best available DE or DT

          • Johnathan Wood

the draft at DE is so thin. that’s why I like Kony Ealy in round 1. Only problem is I think there will be better players than him available, and you don’t want to reach for need.

        • George Hernandez

They say Hageman plays too high, so he loses leverage to weaker linemen and gets pushed around alot.

          • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

He does play too high. That’s why it looks like he should be knocking ppl on their asses, but then you just see this huge dude getting stoned at the LOS.

Then other times, he does get low, and he bull rushes olinemen right back into the QB.

I would really love to trade down and get Hageman, but plenty of teams will gamble on training him to play low.

            Is that coachable? hmmm…

          • George Hernandez

Another strike against him is that he’s 24 and he’s a converted TE, he’s another “project”, if I were picking I probably pass unless we’re talking about pick #51.

          • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

Yeah, but how many of us were throwing our beers at the tv because Kyle Long was a 24 year old rookie who only played the position for a year?

He made the PB in his rookie year and looks like a stud.

            Just depends.

        • Trac

Ha, you Sir are very agreeable today.

          • MB30SD

that was yesterday Trac. so fuck you!

Ha, see what I did there?

      • Johnathan Wood

this is about JaDaveon Clowney. Donald weighed in at 285.

        • MB30SD

clowney strikes me as a lazy JPP. If he were to love football and have his heart 100% into it, I think the guy could be unstoppable. Be he’s not, and he won’t. You can’t force a guy to be a leader/have a need to win.

          What’s your take jon?

          • Johnathan Wood

Clowney reminds me of Peppers, only more of a physical freak. If you get him the right coach who can motivate him, he will be a stud. Peppers had his best years under Marinelli. That’s not a coincidence.

No matter what, he’ll be a solid player. If he works to refine his technique and plays hard, he’ll be a HOFer. I’d draft him if I was high in the draft and needed a pass rusher.

        • SC Dave

My take is that Clowney will be like Peppers. Perhaps a little better. And you know what? If he is, and takes half of the plays in the game off, I’d still take him over any DE in the NFL.

What amazes me is that when a guy like Peppers or Clowney comes along and makes plays that no other human being can or should be able to make, everybody seems to think he should be able to do it EVERY play. It does not work like that; never has, never will.

      • Irish Sweetness

He’s a tackle that runs a 4.4?? So we can’t tell him to line up a few inches to the right?

  • gpldan

Trac – Here’s my shout out to you, lest anybody thinks I have no heart.

The new U2 song, Invisible. Nobody has said this, but I’m saying it: the song is sung from the perspective of Jesus hanging on the cross. Bono has come around to religion, after years of trying to be Jesus himself:
    http://www.atu2.com/news/bono-after-years-of-skepticism-finds-partner-in-religion.html

I, however, still think it’s a scourge against scientific reason and an opiate of the masses, to quote Marx. But, as a Christian, you may want to embrace it because it’s a good hymn with a good message: that mankind is united as one people, whether we know it or not, or act that way or not.

Take a look and you can see this is Jesus speaking, exclaiming God exists for real:

I finally found my real name
I won’t be me when you see me again
    No, I won’t be my father’s son
    I’m more than you know
I’m more than you see here
More than you let me be
    I’m more than you know
    A body in a soul
You don’t see me but you will
    I am not invisible
    That’s right
    I’m leaving the invisible world

So you church guys should adopt the end, the “there is no them” chant. It’s very chant-ish and it’s kind of catchy, I kept humming it after I saw them on Jimmy Fallon. Don’t say I never did anything for ya’

    • MB30SD

      heart of golds maings.

Mighty christian of ya (see what I d… ahh, nevermind)

    • Irish Sweetness

Plus one on the “Bono thinks he’s Jesus”.

No, Bono, you’re a midget from Glasnevin.

    • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

I think this is where I differ from you, GP. In spite of my jabbing of religion (which is really only reserved for ‘fundamentalism’), I don’t exactly view it as Marx or as Mahr (who believes religious folk have some sort of neurological abnormality).

Who could be more “ultra-rational” than Newton or Einstein? Yet both TRULY believed.

MLK, Ghandi, Spinoza, Socrates, Aristotle, etc pretty smart “rational” men – all believed in a higher power.

Belief in itself I don’t see as inherently destructive, but tis true when a belief gets ‘codified’ by MEN that shit goes down hill pretty quickly.

Then again, when men ‘codify’ anything, it quickly turns to crap.

How did Marx’s disciples turn out?

      • Irish Sweetness

I think there’s a huge difference between the religious God-with-a-white-beard … and a higher power. I believe in a higher power, it’s called nature. The superset which contains everything and cannot be fucked with.

        • MB30SD

          BOOM!

This is EXACTLY what I believe. Pretty much like the american indians, but without the little figures in a box.

    • Trac

I Don’t subscribe to your news letter GP. Surprised? Nah! Lol. The masses you talk about…..well that’s another story.

      • gpldan

But you should thank me for pointing out the song, see?

        • Trac

The only thing I know about Bono is how stupid he looks with those sunglasses on. I remember some of his music back in the day and you know what, I actually thought his music was annoying.

          • MB30SD

the old stuff was really good. now they’re just old. Getting old sucks.

instantly brings back memories of high school for me

I remember this like it was yesterday: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzZWSrr5wFI

          • Trac

Meh. I actually ranked U2 with toto and air supply. Too commercial for me. Like GP said, they formulated their music to appeal to the masses, not my style. he he.

          • MB30SD

            fair assessment

          • Irish Sweetness

People are on one of two sides regarding U2 if you’re Irish (you’re Lizzy or U2). I was always on the outside looking in, but when you hear this one played and you’re abroad somewhere, it’s hard not to feel the hairs on the back of your neck bristle when you hear the drums.

          • Irish Sweetness

But this is the guy that owned Dublin … there’s no statue of Bono in Dublin.

      • Irish Sweetness

Poking fun at religion is okay. You can poke fun at pretty much anything, that’s what life’s for and it sucks too much too often to be completely serious all the time … but I’ll never poke fun at the Big Fella upstairs … ‘cos ya never know …..

If I get to have a death bed scene I’ll do two things :

        1. Think of my momma and be thankful for all the things she did and went through for me. Unconditionally.

        2. Ask for any version of Jebus, from Lobo’s 8lb baby version .. .to the ’77 Elvis … to come and bring me home.

        Where are ya Lobo ?

  • CanadaBear

Undersized DT in the first? No thanks. We need a monster in the middle to make life difficult for RB’s. No guys with injury questions in the first rd. Just stop all this nonsense. I totally agree with MB. Take the guy with the fewest question marks. Almost every time we take the undersized guy he flames out from injuries in short order (or sucks moose wang like CD). Almost every time we take a guy with injury questions we regret it within a couple of years. Take the highest rated person on your board that has the fewest amount of “issues”. I’m amazed how often the Bears over think the first rd picks. They try to get cute and take a flyer on an over achiever (CD) or someone with prior injuries that always come back to bite us in the ass.

    • MB30SD

why thaaaaank you canada. I’ll almost forgive you for beating both of our hockey teams for that.

      • CanadaBear

I didn’t have much to do with that! The US was lucky they had Quick in the net that game or it would have been much more lopsided. Canada controlled the game from beginning to end. Not sure what happened to the Men’s team. They were rolling over everyone until they got into the semis. I’d like to think they didn’t really fold up the tent against Finland but it sure seemed like they did (Canada did the same thing in the Japan Olympics). Had to laugh at the comments after the mens game. There are so many meat headed fans on both sides of the border it’s crazy.

The women’s game was a knife in the heart for the US. When the shot bounced off the post late in the game it had to get into the US women’s head. As in, not your night. It will be interesting to see if the US Women bounce back after that game.

        • MB30SD
          • CanadaBear

Gotta love the mayor. Glad I don’t live in Toronto.

        • Cormonster

Canada was by far the best team. Just stacked from top to bottom. They dominated the US and Sweden. Glad to see 3 Hawks win the gold and three the silver.

          • CanadaBear

Babcock was the best coach in the Tourny. Makes a huge difference when a lot of the teams are only together for 3 weeks. Their D lines were incredible. I really enjoy watching them play on the big ice with no enforcers on the roster. I don’t mind the fighting in the NHL but I sure don’t miss it if the games are compelling.

          • Cormonster

I love the big ice. It makes for a much more fluid game. Totally agree on the defense men, and Toews and Crosby are no slouches playing D.

    • Johnathan Wood

Donald has speed, strength, overall athleticism, and outstanding production. If he was 10 pounds heavier he would be a top 5 pick.

He’s about the same weight as Ratliff, only 10 pounds less than Melton/Jernigan/a whole bunch of DTs just under 300 pounds.

I’m not sold on Donald as their pick, but this guy will be good.

      • CanadaBear

I know he’s got talent but we got killed with guys running up the gut on us last year. I’m not a fan of undersized DT’s.

        • Irish Sweetness

So why couldn’t we play him at end?

          • MB30SD

hopefully all the projects stop once and for all when we cut CD next year Irish. Please stop asking for more of them (thank you sir may I have another).

“Bear Projects”, a term that can be defined as:

Bad positional players who are bad at their career position, or need to be moved for some other non-standard non-positive reason, to another position in order to see if any value or usefulness whatsoever can be derived before eating the salary and admitting failure to choose the right player.

Good football players at any position rarely become “Projects” because they are good at the position they are supposed to play and don’t need tricks, spells, illusions, or reach tactics to try and squeeze out even a modicum of value for the compensation they’ve already been given.

(Examples: Chris Conte, FS; Brandon Hardin, FS; Devin Hester, WR; Shea McClelin, NFL Football player; Jon Bostic, OLB)

          • Johnathan Wood

Donald is not a project. He was the best DT in college football last year.

          • MB30SD

right, which is why I characterized it as a project move when Irish asked if he could be moved to end instead… or maybe he was talking about Clowney.

I was told there’d be no math involved.

          • Irish Sweetness

Moving him a few inches to the right makes him a project? All I could hear in his highlight reel was “pass rusher”. If he’s 6’5 and 270, he’s a DE, no? Hampton played DE/DT, same height, about the same weight. This is not ballistic telemetry.

Donald is only under-sized if you incorrectly position him at DT. CD was undersized because they incorrectly played him at DE. Wooten did well at situations inside last season, but they have to be just that – certain situations (opposite small centers, slow guards and whatnot). We could play Wooten/Donald on the ends and then stunt them all day long.

I trust Emery will see that and a lot more besides.

          • MB30SD

            again, clowney is 6’5″ 270 and runs a 4.4 40. We’re talking about Aaron Donald who is 6’1″ 265 and runs a 4.7 40.

He plays DT, we need DT’s, why in god’s name would you move him? WE can just pick up a DE in Rd2 or FA

          • Irish Sweetness

Huh? I thought he was 6’5 !!! Hold the front page … 6 foot fucking one? NO WAY.

          • CanadaBear

Don’t think he’s tall enough and/or long enough. Not to mention he plays DT.

          • Irish Sweetness

Danimal. Same exact size … played DE/DT.

I don’t see the problem. He’s got the speed to cover the outside stuff. You can run a slow time at the combine, but you can’t run faster than what you are. He’s fast, he’s DE-sized, ergo he can very likely play DE. Wooten can also play both, and was arguably more effective at certain times last season as a quick tackle.

          • Johnathan Wood

typically you want edge rushers to be longer than that. But Donald could certainly play DE when they line up in 3-4 hybrid fronts (or 3-3-5 nickel looks)

          • MB30SD

            in 19fucking85!!!!

“No we didn’t! Oops. Sorry! Yours truly – the people in charge of dropping nuclear weapons – don’t know the difference between alien spacecraft and freakin’ weather balloons. Our bad!”

Your best intelligent answer now, Waffle ….. no jokes … how does that happen?

    • MB30SD

Waffle slowly turns to Irish, cutting him off mid-sentence and says in a raised voice, but not a yell:

      “DOOOOOONNNN’T CAAAAAAAAAAARE!”

I respectfully applaud your admiration of one’s passion, and your gracious response.

But …. some hairy old Jew born in the 19th century worked out all the remaining laws of physics ? Einstein totally didn’t buy Quantum Mechanics, ergo his theories regarding ANYTHING of a photonic nature were incomplete. It took another Jew – this one with a comb – in Feynman to polish off the laws of QED. It seems, apparently, that only the U.S. Navy in underground bases are holding on to the final laws which complete the puzzle … those of gravity at the quantum level. And if that’s true, then damn them to hell, because scientific knowledge belongs to us all … who gave it to them.

Again, two things travel faster than the speed of light (that I know of) :

        1. Information (by way of Bell’s theorem – a little known Irish scientist – finally proven in 1981 by Alain Aspect).

        2. Gravity ( by law of the sodding obvious)

With great respect to Mr. Einstein, he stood on the shoulders of giants, but couldn’t finish his sums because he didn’t believe one of the text-books. He famously said “God doesn’t play dice …” in relation to QM ….. when Neils Bohr, Dirac, Feynman and Co. ultimately showed that was precisely what God is playing. QM has never been proven wrong experimentally.

(taps ball back over the net)

  • George Hernandez

If you pair him with a monster DT (Linval Joseph??), I think him being undersized is less important, but I worry about teams with bigger guards just leaning on him for 4 quarters and wearing him down so he wont have the same get off in the 4th Q as he gets early in the games. Plus the competition he faced was subpar, did any of the teams he faced have interior offensive lineman that were worth a lick? I’m weary about him being the pick unless we trade down to the mid-twenties and pick up a 3rd, which is a possibility if one of the “Big 3” QB’s falls to 14.

    • Johnathan Wood

Pitt’s toughest games last year were against Florida State, Duke, Notre Dame, North Carolina, and Miami. All of those teams had at least one NFL-quality offensive lineman. Donald’s lines:
      FSU: 3 tackles, 1 sack
      Duke: 2 tackles, 1 sack
      Notre Dame: 1 tackle
North Carolina: 5 tackles, 1 sack
      Miami: 3 tackles

      Not bad.

      • MB30SD

        but not impressive either. Hmmmm….

        • Johnathan Wood

3 sacks as a DT in 5 games against his top competition? Carrying that out over 16 games in the NFL would be 9.6 sacks. I’ll take that from a DT any day, even if he comes up a little short.

          • MB30SD

yeah… guess I’m looking for peppers 2.0 @ #14… especially after the CD debacle.

I have very high (maybe unreasonable) standards.

          • Johnathan Wood

remember DTs put up different stats. Only 2 DTs in the NFL right now have ever had 10+ sack years: Suh and Atkins. And Suh (and Peppers) were both top 5 picks.

Donald would be a Melton-like player. Melton’s two best seasons were 24 tackles (7 sacks) and 44 tackles (6 sacks).

Duke was really good last year. ACC title game, then gave Texas A&M everything they could handle in a bowl game. Miami has an OG and OT who are both gonna be drafted. ND has some good OL guys too, including a likely 1st or 2nd round pick. UNC also has had some good big bodies in the trenches the last few years.

      • George Hernandez

Those stats aren’t bad, but my main concern is him being able to be explosive for 4 quarters, especially if teams are running at him all game. He isn’t going to win with size so he HAS to win with explosion and if it isn’t there then he’s a liability.

  • MB30SD

RIP Harols Ramis… what a bummer.

Ghostbusters. Stripes. And great movies he directed. Sad.

  • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

“for what it’s worth, Donald’s first 10 yards (1.59) almost matched
Clowney’s (1.56). That shows the explosion Donald has in the interior.”

    For comparison’s sake, Suh ran a 1.69
To go along with 5.03 40
    32 bench reps. http://nflcombineresults.com/playerpage.php?i=8640

I was trying to find Tommie Harris’ 10 yard split (apparently he didn’t run it, but I swear I posted a # on that last preseason. Anyone have that lying around somewhere?), but I know his first step was insane.

    http://nflcombineresults.com/playerpage.php?f=Tommie&l=Harris&i=6838

One problem with Donald is that his frame is nearly maxed out already; Suh was 6’3 303, while Harris was 6’2 295.

Donald is listed as 6’1 285
    4.68 40
    35 bench

It’s almost eerie though how similar Donald and Harris are.

    Here’s Harris’ scouting report.

    “Positives:
Tommie Harris is a quick and powerful
defensive lineman. He gets off the ball as quick as any tackle in the
country, and he has the ability to slip blocks. He is very athletic for
his size and has a knack for getting off blocks and getting penetration
    into the backfield.
He has very good pass rushing skills, yet
he holds up well against the run. He has started since he was a true
freshman at Oklahoma, so he has tons of experience for an underclassmen.
He also has good closing speed for a big man.
    Negatives:
    The
only real knock on Harris has been his size. He weighs close to 290
now, which isn’t bad for a one-gap tackle, and with his frame, he could
easily put on another 10 pounds. He could also be moved to defensive end
in the NFL, especially in a 3-4 defense.” http://football.about.com/cs/playerprofiles/p/tommieharris.htm

    Here’s Donald’s
    http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/aaron-donald?id=2543485

OH, and BTW, the Bears drafted Tommie Harris at…14!

There’s a bigger issue though…we’re no longer running the Lovie one gap, right?

    • Johnathan Wood

they are still primarily gonna be primarily a one-gap 4-3 defense.

what changes is that in nickel they might go to 3-3-5 instead of 4-2-5 looks. Donald would be a DE in those lineups.

All hypothetical though. Depends on FA. if they re-sign Melton, no way they should then spend a 1st round pick on Donald.

      • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

I honestly don’t know exactly who the Bears are going to model their D on.

        I pointed out the Texan’s 3-4 one-gap as a possibilty – I don’t think they have a 6’1 285 Dlinemen, but I would have to double check.

The Saints are another possible blue-print, as are the Seahawks, but I don’t recall any of them having that small of a D-linemen stud.

Geno Atkins compares to Donald, but that’s a pure 4-3.

Might not matter. Lovie might get twitchy and draft Donald anyways, or Marinelli can convince Jerry to trade up for him.

        • gpldan

Donald could be made a DE.

          • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

I was thinking the same, but then the “experts” counter that he’s not ‘long enough’ for DE.

He benched 35, which is almost twice as much as Clowney (more importantly, Donald PLAYS strong on tape).

I wonder if Donald can be a DE.

I was surprised when re-visiting Tommie Harris’ scouting report that a lot of them mentioned him possibly being a 3-4 end.

Can’t even imagine him anything other than a bad ass 3-tech DT.

          • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

            Just checked.

            Donald has 32 inch arms
            Clowney 34

Is that much of a difference on the outside? Maybe wingspan? Finger tips?

          • Johnathan Wood

            Clowney is also much taller.

          • Irish Sweetness

But his heart is smaller ….

          • Irish Sweetness

Exactly. Measure those fingers and armpits! How much do his knuckles stretch?

          • Irish Sweetness

To me this is as obvious as CD projecting to an OLB in the NFL even though he played DE in college.

          • MB30SD

            smh.

          • Irish Sweetness

Now a stretch-play might be thinking …Donald could be our awesome new Mike, if we trim him down a touch … that would be a stretch … but not to suggest that he projects to be an end in the NFL. ‘Experts’ saying he’s not tall enough at 6’5 are talking out their pieholes. Speed/quickness are the real core elements of any DE. Was Dan Hampton not long enough? Please.

          • MB30SD

            He’s 6’1″ maings… and it’s a different game now.

          • Irish Sweetness

Again, I have just realised this, I totally read 6’5 somewhere, or thought I did …

          • Irish Sweetness

        • Johnathan Wood

All the beat writers I’ve seen think it will be similar to Seattle’s in terms of personnel groupings.

        • SC Dave

Amazing all the confidence everyone has that Clowney “has no heart”. I think he played with a bit of caution last season, which was a sign of either outstanding advice or plain common sense. There was nothing for Clowney to prove last season – simply stay healthy until the draft day paycheck comes in.

And the bench press combine thing? Pool jumping, part II.

      • Irish Sweetness

I’ll bet Donald is going to need more than a one-gap defense with Michael Sam around …. what? Really? No …. that thread’s really over?

THUHHHH HIIIIIIILLLLLS ARE A-LIIIIIVE …..WITH THE SOWWWWWND OF MYOOO-ZIK !!

      I’ll bet Michael Sam would like to explode up Donald’s interior …wait .. what? …. that thread’s over?Oh …. I get it …. sorry … okay … look I’ll post it back there … so it’s uhhhh …okay …sorry …

  • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

And Draftniks are apparently impressed by Hagemen, Donald and Jernigan, though I have yet to check out their numbers/performance, so I’ll have to do that soon.

    • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

OK, caught a little bit of all.

Hageman for a big man has nice feet (that’s what Rex said!). Good balance. Sub 5. for someone his size is a plus. HOWEVER, he just doesn’t show any explosion. He’ll be a 3-4 DE who holds the point of attack, but I don’t see big sack production from him unless he really gets coached up. His versatility is appealing too. He still looks like a good prospect, but the coaches better know exactly what the fuck they’re doing if they draft him.

Donald. Holy shite muslime. Did you see his 40? I mean, it looks fast on paper, but the dude looks like a canon ball. His 10yard split was Tommie Harris-esque, and I said if he approximates that, then we should seriously look at him. He’s built like a fire hydrant too. Benched 35. Moves like a cat. Relentless motor. Man, I know he’s undersized, but the combine only confirmed his tape. If we were in the old 4-3, he’d be a no brainer even if a little small.

Jerningan was OK. Kinda like I said before – jack of all trades. Moves well. Decent feet. I’m worried that Mayock remarked he’s be a better nose tackle in a 4-3. That was the same talk about Paea.

      • MB30SD

so pryor at #14 then! Sold!

        • Irish Sweetness

What kind of DE could we get in the 2nd if we did that?

  • George Hernandez

Telvin Smith, ILB, Florida State just ran a 4.41 40 (faster than Bostic) and is 6′ 3″ 218, We could draft him late and bulk him up, or convert him to S.

    • Doooonnnn’t Caaaaare!

gotta go with the known quantities. DL or S.

      • George Hernandez

I was thinking 5th round or later.

        • MB30SD

please god no more projects george. please.

Pryor is a FS. Dix is a FS. If we need a FS, let’s draft a real fucking FS.

          • George Hernandez

This is late though, why not, 5th, 6th rounders are mostly special teamers anyway and this dude would make a good gunner at worst. I’m on board getting legit players for the positions they play early, but later in the draft you can take some chances. Plus his natural position is ILB so if you can play him on specials while you bulk him up and teach him the game, all the more better.

          • MB30SD

I’m fine with bringing a guy in you know will be a good STer… but then bring him on for that. You can DeF hit late round picks (kam Chancellor, tom brady, etc…) but rarely do you pick up a 5th rd LB and he turns into a bad ass FS.

What you just said above isn’t a project pick, it’s thinking you’ll get a great STer in the 5th, and sure. Let’s do that.

          • George Hernandez

I was sucked in by the 4.41 40. It’s like an ugly chick with a nice rack.

          • MB30SD

6 to an 8.5 every time george.

          • Irish Sweetness

Always spot the ugly chick first. I know you don’t need to look at the mantlepiece when you’re poking the fire … but y’know ….

          • CanadaBear

When I was a kid my older brother told me about the GUE (Go Ugly Early) theory. He said grab the ugly one with a great body ASAP. Once every guy is hammered they will be all over her. If you go after her early in the night, there isn’t any competition. Worked for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!

          • Irish Sweetness

Semi-genius I say. John Von Neumann, one of my most favorite Red Sea pedestrians, came up with game-theory, and that inspired Russell Crowe (John Nash) to go for the less attractive bird at the bar in ‘A Beautiful Mind’.

Or … come to thailand (pattaya) and go into any one of about 5000 bars and just point at some delicious little creature half your age and watch as he she bounces over to you beaming and squealing ready to obey your every command.

            Land of the free ?

Uh-uh. You’ve still got lap dance clubs … where …(giggles) … YOU CAN’T TOUCH THE GIRLS !!!! MWAHH!

South east Asia rocks. For the price of a drink you can finger a chick or eat her out … RIGHT THERE!

I’ll be 62 this summer. I’m probably not going to Thailand for a sex junket. My biggest fears would be AIDS, getting killed outright, or if I was hammered (20+ years of sobriety down the shitter) not being able to tell the difference between a lady and a ladyboy. EEK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

          • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

            We already have Conte though!

          • Johnathan Wood

projects are for the later rounds. Guys like Marquess Wilson and Cornelius Washington.
Grab them late, it’s less of a risk ($$/draft pick), you want guys with physical potential to develop into starters.

          • MB30SD

Ok, since you and I seem to be missing each other on the definition of a project player today Jon, either see my definition below, or here it is in a nutshell.

Don’t look at a guy who’s played one position his entire football career and pick him up for the express reason to TRY him at a completely new and different position in the pros.

High school, and less so, College are great places to do projects with athletic players… the pros is not. And furthermore, please god no more on the Chicago fucking Bears.

          • Irish Sweetness

I proffer that DT and DE are not completely different positions, and that in fact, the positions are often interchanged on stunts etc. LB – FS and vice versa … different story. Donald is interesting from that perspective, but surely he’s not there when we pick given his 4.4 time?

          • MB30SD

depends on the D scheme and the player, but yes, dline positions are infinitely more interchangeable that linebackers and DBs

    • Irish Sweetness

Dude, the vid after. Kahili Mack is a fucking BEAST.

His 40 was kinda slow tho… looks like if he tried he could go sub 4.6

      • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

I would LOVVE Mack. Just having a bad ass LB named Mack for Da Bears.

He also really resembles Lawrence Taylor. I think he’s LT’s illegitimate son.

We draft Mack, and he becomes our defacto DE, LB and S.

  • George Hernandez

Quick tangent, with the cap now rumored to be $132MM, McCown coming back has to be a no-brainer right?

    • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

That means other teams like the Jets or Raiders have an extra $10M to spend too.

If I’m the Raiders, I’m paying McCown just to show their shit-storm at Qb what it is to be a pro.

However, McCown has already pondered retirement, and I don’t think he’s going to go through all that turmoil of changing franchises just for one year.

I think he stays a Bear for a reasonable price.

      • Irish Sweetness

If he’s stayed under EVERYBODY’S radar … can all the GMs be blind? He was one of the top three QBs in the NFL last year.

    • Irish Sweetness

Somebody will/should pay him $8M to be a stop-gap for a year e.g. if they’re drafting a project QB and need a mentor.

George, we need to know what you look like. I’m black and I wear a Roos headband. Waffle has a badger’s body, but the head of Jay Cutler. Entiendes, hermano? It;s easier for stereotyping purposes. • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

Clowney worries me more and more every time I hear words come out of his mouth.

When someone read him Dee Ford’s quote, he didn’t even bat an eye, or maybe was too dense to understand it was an insult. If that were me, I would’ve been, “Who Ford? The safety? I guess A, B and C Ford couldn’t make it to the combine.” I would’ve been talking some major shit back. But he just sat there, with a Lovie-ish face.

Also, he’s not participating in drills? WTF? Shouldn’t that be his thing? Clowney said that he wants to work on his hands. Hey, here’s a thought, maybe you should’ve worked on your hands and technique DURING THE SEASON like every other prospect who’s doing the drills. When Bucky gave him the biz and asked if Clowney lost weight just for a fast 40, Clowney didn’t exactly deny it. When asked who’s gonna train him with his hands, Clowney responded he didn’t have anyone yet, and reacted like he didn’t even have anyone in mind = bs.

Clowney is the Randy Moss of this decade.

But a half-assed Moss still impacted the game.

    • Irish Sweetness

But he defintiely had the best death on TV. Other than Rocket Romano. I’m in a teary-fest here watchiing all the sad bits of E.R. Damn that was a great show.

  • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

    In other Bizarro-Bears news…

“NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reports the Bears have “strong
interest” in re-signing free agent Josh McCown, and that the Jets and
    Bucs are also interested.

Rapsheet lumps the Bucs in with the Bears’ “strong
interest.” Chicago’s interest should go without saying after McCown
flourished in Marc Trestman’s system as Jay Cutler’s backup last season,
but the Bucs and Jets should be careful not to overpay. McCown is a
35-year-old (in July) journeyman who was managed and manipulated to
success by an offensive guru. New York and Tampa Bay likely don’t have
the coaching-staff horses to keep McCown’s resurgence going.”

    Rotoworld

    • Johnathan Wood

anybody who pays big $$ for McCown will be disappointed. You don’t magically turn great at 34 after a decade-long career of sub-par.

Product of the system, nothing more. Also got lucky to be playing bad defenses and had 4-5 sure interceptions dropped or called back by penalties.

      • Doooonnnn’t Caaaaare!

Josh stays because he’ll be paid enough and knows this is the perfect system. Imagine if he went to the Jets. Fucking debacle.

        • Johnathan Wood

I tend to think that’s likely. Perfect fit here, he knows it, and his comments say as much.

Still, I’m not gonna be mad at him if the Jets or Bucs throw stupid money at him and he runs to it. Gotta get what you can while you can.

          • Irish Sweetness

I would suck a bag of dicks for 8 million dollars.

(a substantial number of readers think to themselves “I’d do that for free sweetie!”)

        • Irish Sweetness

He’s not going to find two put-it-up-there-go-get-it receivers anywhere else like he’s got here. But I hope they don’t offer him insulting take-it-or-leave-it money. It’s the most important position on the team, and he’s the second most important person on the roster.

      • Irish Sweetness

If you’re saying McCown is lucky then I’m calling bullshit, Woodsy. He marched his offense up and down fields like Cutty doesn’t. That’s what I saw. Same receivers. He moves the ball, Cutty stalls drives thinking he can make any pass. You can use the could-have-had-another-five INTs on any QB and no one more so than jay Christopher Cutler, nobody nearly throws as many INTS as he does. Except of course, the ‘elite’ Eli Manning (raise your hands!)

        • Johnathan Wood

I’m not saying McCown was just lucky. I am saying his numbers were not as good as it would appear. The only two decent defenses he faced (STL and BAL) were rough outings. He was also shit-tastic against Minnesota and cost them that game.

He had one amazing game (DAL), one good game (GB), and otherwise struggled to put points on the board.

          • Johnathan Wood

don’t get me wrong: McCown was everything you want your backup to be. But he is also a backup for a reason, and that showed. He consistently moved the ball between the 20s, but struggled to put it in the end zone because he didn’t have the arm strength that is so necessary when the field shortens.

    • Irish Sweetness

” … who was managed and manipulated to success by an offensive guru.”

      Yeah … 13 TDs – 1 Interception and a rating of One-oh-something.

Yeah, cuz it’s THAT easy. Stats mean nothing, McCown was just following orders. Like Bill Walsh was basically just steering Joe Montana to greatness. Joe was just a little Tecmo-bowl icon. Fuck.

NY and TB don’t have our receivers either. There’s that.

      • MB30SD

reality check…. you just compared josh mccown to joe montana.

        irish, irish, irish.

        • Irish Sweetness

Joe > Manning > Brady > Josh. Yes.

Apologies Joe Cool. I hated you, but you were and remain, the GOAT.

(Like to have seen Otto Graham though, he must have been special).

  • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

LB Christian Jones might be this year’s Kiko Alonso.

Last year, I was hoping we would get Kiko in the third, and he climbed up to the early 2nd.

This year, I’m hoping Jones falls to us in the 3rd, but maybe he’s worth a 2nd. God knows we need dudes that can, ya know, TACKLE.

    http://thesidelineview.com/columns/draft/curious-case-christian-jones

    • Johnathan Wood

he’s a jack of all trades LB who can line up all over the place, cover, and rush the passer.

Awesome. Only problem is that’s what they’re planning to use McClellin for this year.

    • Irish Sweetness

If we draft a LB anywhere in the first 3 rounds, I will cough up my nuts. DE/DT/C/FS … anything outside that is self-immolation.

  • Johnathan Wood

so I did a mock offseason if I was Emery and came up with the following depth chart. Financially realistic without screwing future cap (no backloading deals, only money moved to future is $1M from cutting Michael Bush as June 1).

What do you think? I hope Emery does something like this. Makes DT a strength, DE might be a bit of a weakness (aka pass rush), but get help in that from Melton and have three young DEs, you hope one or more of them can contribute. Run D would be much much MUCH better.

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AiXNpJle4ZdddHBxSmVoX3JDZmRwNV9YMVMyejVjTXc#gid=0

    • Johnathan Wood

this doesn’t go into the nitty gritty details of how I got here. I’ll publish that later this week or next week if anybody cares. it’s long (3 parts, several thousand words) and rather involved. Just trust me that, mathematically, it all works.

      • MB30SD

send that shit to halas maings. Give it to that stooge larry mayer, I promise he’ll send that shit on to emery just because it’s long and has numbers and larry only reads at a 6th grade level. He’ll be impressed without even understanding how comprehensive and well thought through it is. Do it for fun.

    • MB30SD

      line 25.

      you’re dead to me.

      • Johnathan Wood

I’m trying to be realistic. He will be in camp. He will be competing for a job. He’s in a 3-way competition he probably doesn’t win in my scenario. Is it really that bad to have him as a backup?

        • MB30SD

no, that’s what I pictured.. but you have him as the starter for christ’s sake!!!

          • Johnathan Wood

incumbent. He’d have to earn it in camp. If he’s starting, that means he looks good.

        2. ….and the Corner SJB is 6’2+ likey ….
3…….Don’t want to see weems on the WR roster with 6’5 Tolliver on the PS (we can’t replace either of the Beastly brothers with a midget – I’m not feeling the Marquess love)…
        4. No Garza. Really liking that.
        5. I like Shamus at Mike moreso thanOLB, need that 6’3 dropping back in the cover 2, lethal.
        6. Is Steltz-bomber gone ? remember the words of Master Lac … “always in the right place … he is…”
        7. No Garza, again. Good.

          • Irish Sweetness

Give the boy a chance. We’ll see. What’ve we got to lose?

    • Irish Sweetness

Make DE and DT a strength – everything else straightens itself out, even those fools at safety will look better. Offense is pretty much okay other than Center and a banger-back. It depends on what we do with Melton. If he gets signed and you have Paea/Ratliff/Melton then you pretty much have to draft a DE first pick. Draft two if they’re good enough.

      • Johnathan Wood

they have more needs than can be fixed in one offseason. I don’t think they’ll be able to make both a strength this year. But this plan would set them up with 3 young DEs, two of whom (Washington and Ealy) have the capability to become stars, plus a solid starter in Wootton. If the young bucks develop, it will be a strength by the end of the year.

His friend said “don’t go!”, but Komarov’s best friend was the next in line for the same mission and he could not knowingly send his dear friend to his death. His friend was Yuri Gagarin, already the most famous and revered Soviet hero.

      Alternatives :

      1. Become an SR-51 pilot AND GET PAID to go to the same altitude. You could rub one out in zero-G and watch all of those little tadpoles-of-life float about in all of God’s glory (disclaimer: he may frown upon such flagrant onanism and smite thee.)

      2. Walk into Area 51’s outer domain and start announcing loudly that you’re Kevin Spacey and you have Gwynneth Paltrow’s head in a box (you may hear loud applause if the two-ways are left on). On arrival at the gates, tell the guards that you’re holding a thermal-detonator and you wish to see the Mighty Jabba. Go to the second or third hangar, and demand entry to a saucer (with pilot) … then travel wherever you like in the universe …… warning, you will experience no weightlessness in this environment, but some dis-orientation from the massive magnetic field generated around you …..

… note: if the first part works, maybe shoot through to Area 52 and demand asylum in the Tall Whites’ embassy …tell them Irish is still waiting to be picked up and could you possibly have a ride to the fourth planet of Zeta Reticuli and ask them to do a low orbit … ask to smoke, and when they open a window, change the setting on the thermal detonator to delay, and toss it out. First blow against the Tall Greys successfully dealt for ‘Murica and all the crackers who got abducted and anally probed. GET SOME!!

    C. Adam Archuleta

(gets no response and looks around the blog bar … only Jefe is present … face down unconscious in a stale pool of Coors light, still holding his phone aloft, mid-tweet … something about an altercation at a varsity lacrosse match … Irish looks down at his sleeping twins)

Daddy’s gotta go be a legend, peanuts …

(strides manfully over to her table and flicks back his Sam Elliot hair circa Roadhouse)

‘Scuse me ma’am… could you possibly keep an eye on my motherless twins over there while I call the vet and see how my cat’s doin ‘ ?

          (raises one eyebrow)

          Uhhh…

          You’re a sweetie, thanks.

          • MB30SD

            EXACTLY.

  • Johnathan Wood

So I was doing a little digging and I uncovered this gem. Clowney’s combine numbers compared to Cornelius Washington:
    Height: 6’5″/6’4″
    Weight: 266/265
    Arm length: 34.5″/34″
    40: 4.53/4.55
    first 10: 1.56/1.60
    Bench: 21/36
    Vertical: 37.5/39.0
    Broad Jump: 124″/128″

Washington is every bit the athlete Clowney is. That’s the kind of upside this kid has if he can ever put it all together. Hot damn. Here’s hoping the new coaches can coach this kid up.

    • MB30SD

That’s what I’ve been saying since last year maings. The Octopus is a freak of natuuure.

      • Johnathan Wood

I just find it funny everybody is blowing Clowney right now when Washington is probably more athletic. Slightly lower top-end speed, but better everywhere else at the exact same size.

Man I hope he figures it out.

        • MB30SD

yeah, not holding my breath unfortunately.

When we took him last year I looked up his stats (physical) and almost shit a brick. Dude is seriously a freak of nature, but like yonny said, he’s a spaz on the field.

It would be nice if he can just pull it together enough to be a regular contributor in situational downs. Not even close to expecting him to be the second coming of pep.

          • Doooonnnn’t Caaaaare!

Some guys just have a feel for the game, a nose for the ball. Guys like Freeney and Mathis aren’t huge but they are fucking animals and have a natural instinct on how to hunt down ball carriers/qb’s on the football field.
Guys like Washington have the physical tools but for some reason lack that innate football killer instinct that gets them to the ball no matter what and no matter where they are on the field.

          • gpldan

Some guys just don’t want to take the punishment. I’m sure Washington likes the way he looks in a mirror. Breaking bones, getting bruises that look like t-bone steaks – the warrior code – just doesn’t appeal to some guys.

          • Doooonnnn’t Caaaaare!

agreed sir, the NFL game is different because you are asked to be in pain…every single play…every single day….every single game….of your entire career.
There are a ton of super humans out there that just can’t take the pain of being an NFL player. I can’t say I blame them.

    • bearsfantillend

do you know how may DE’s coming into the league over the years have very comparable combine numbers to Clowney’s? quite a few. Do you know how many of those comparable players were stars in the league? very few. I am not saying Clowney is going to be a bust and i am not saying Washington is going to be a star, but i am saying Combine numbers are USELESS!!!! Besides letting us know that the player fits the “Prototypical” numbers for a position, there is very little correlation between these numbers and success.

      • Johnathan Wood

I know. The odds of him turning into a stud are not very high.

I’m not counting on him ever becoming a star, or even a starter. But it’s nice to have a young guy with the potential to do so, at least.

    • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

If Clowney is a blind dog in a meat market, what does that make Washington? the Helen Keller of dogs?

      • Irish Sweetness

It’s just incredible that Helen Keller was able to write that diary before the Nazis found her up in that little room … and she was completely blind …. (sniff) … poor little thing …..

        • MB30SD

          Anti… semite

        • CanadaBear

Are we mixing Helen Keller and Anne Frank stories together? Sounds like Clerks II.

  • MB30SD

    “DaBearsBlog @dabearsblog
Oddly enough, if I were Emery, I might be more interested in bringing back Ratliff than over-paying a hopefully-motivated Melton”

I agree with this. Melton is a HUGE question mark and not worth the risk, unless he’s willing to take a VERY reasonable 1-year prove it contract.

  • Trac

Hey, Cutty Badger, come get some Smallwood. lol New Avatar for Bear Fan? he he

    • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

wow. I was just seeing some footage of that last night. Liston took the dive and got himself about a mil? That’s sad (I guess). Supposedly everyone thought Liston would beat the crap out of Ali originally? I guess we’ll never know now…

      • Irish Sweetness

I wonder if Tyson did that?

    • CanadaBear

I’m not sure I believe he took a dive in the first fight. The second “Phantom Punch” fight, oh yeah. Liston took a beating in that first fight. Maybe it was a dive but it wasn’t obvious. Saying there are mobsters, gamblers, fight fixers, etc. around boxing proves nothing. The criminal element has always been around boxing (see Don King/Bob Arum). I saw both fights a week or two after they happened. Granted I always liked Ali but I’d need more proof before I’d buy the first one was fixed.

  • gpldan

I’m going Hageman at 1. He can play 5-tech and 3-tech both, he can switch in to nose so Chicken Dinner can stand up. Pick up Raji in FA to back up and tell Melton he’s going to need to play outside in a 3-4 situation.

As much as we all like watching Dix hitting big on the big screen, Bailey from USC will be there in the 2nd to replace Pringles and after that Bears gotta have a Mike.

Now that I said that, I’m sure Phil will draft Donald at 14.

    • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

That’s where I’m leaning too, though Donald up there looks like T-Harris Jr.

Hageman’s versatility can truly make our D look Seahawk-ish. Don’t know. I’m a little torn.

Tuitt is another guy I think would look good in a Bears uni who we can trade down for.

      • Johnathan Wood

Tuitt’s injury is worth monitoring. If it lingers and he can’t work out before the draft, could he fall to Chicago at 51? Probably a pipe dream, but you never know…

    • Irish Sweetness

Where’s my Center? I’ve been screaming for that MOFO at least as long as Lobo and his two guards ….

  • MB30SD
    • gpldan

Is Dix too small? His combine report says he’s not stout enough to handle playing in the box. (these jokes wrote themselves)

Size does matter (in the NFL)

      • MB30SD

my god, like underhanding a softball to roided out mark mcguire.

Not sure what they’re talking about, Dix is 6’1″ and 210ish. Pryor is 5’11” and around the same. dix ran a 4.5, pryor 4.6.

Starting to think Dix is the cover guy we want… you use your SS to fill the box and bring the wood (that’s what she said), not the FS… which seems to be pryor’s thing… HITTING… THAT!

(you’re right… almost too easy for sport)

      • Irish Sweetness

And Pryor is even smaller …. Receivers .. PLAYERS .. are getting bigger .. .our DBs have to go with the flow and get bigger too. I feel our free safety needs to be 6’2 minimum 220lbs. Got to be on the positive side of any collision of momentums. Basic physics. This is beyond football.

MB? Any size-able safeties out there who might be down the draft board a ways ?.

        • MB30SD

Your fs needs to be very fast and GREAT at coverage. .. size isn’t imperative. Your ss needs to be a fucking beast AND be able to do a turn and go route ALL the way down the field with a Jimmy Graham type te.

You should NEVER knowingly Draft a player at one position with the intent to move him to a totally new position he’s never played. When you do this you get a chris conte, Brandon hardin, or what we’ll see this year… A chicken dinner.

          Last time. .. please god?

  • MB30SD

we interested in bryant instead of bennett… bennett will be asking for non-costco money: http://tracking.si.com/2014/02/23/red-bryant-released-seahawks-free-agency/

    • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

I got a chub when I heard DeMarcus Ware (yes, that DeMarcus Ware) might hit FA because good ole Jerra is $20M over the cap, but that didn’t stop him from throwing cash on his kicker. I guess he values kickers more than bad ass pass rushers.
      http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/02/24/jerry-jones-admits-demarcus-ware-could-be-a-cap-casualty/

I wonder though…he’s been a little injury prone the last two years, and Cowgirl fans will say he disappears when they need him most.

      • MB30SD

saw that. I think he’s done… been injured a lot. reminds me of pep a little.

Also, on a tangent… seems to be a lot of rd 3-4 FS fodder out there: http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/Terrence-Brooks?id=2543712

        • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

There’s a few later round S that I like, but I’ll get more in depth with that as the process goes on.

Brooks is small, and his weaknesses are almost identical to…Major Wrong!

Jimmy Ward didn’t participate in the combine, which is kinda good because he would’ve blown up. Hopefully we can nab him in the 2nd because there seems to be a drop off after him.

          • MB30SD

I’ll leave the real research work up to you, jon, and NB.

Yeah, AA’s wife is beautiful with all the right assets. She’s an 11, easily.

          • Johnathan Wood

I am officially driving the Jimmy Ward bandwagon. I think he ends up the best S in this years’ class. Just seems to always be in the right spot, very instinctive.

          • MB30SD

I like that, but he’s a SS not a FS… and then there’s this: ” Lacks starter-caliber size, instincts, range and cover skills, but could serve as a backup and special-teams contributor.”

            http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/jimmie-ward?id=2543741

          • Johnathan Wood

those grades are often waaaaaaay off. They had Cornelius Washington as the highest of the guys the Bears drafted last year.

Personally I don’t get into the SS/FS designation too much. Find two S who can play and put them on the field. All S these days need to be able to cover and tackle.

But my offseason plan involves signing Malcolm Jenkins from NO, who is a FS, so SS in draft is just fine by me.

          • MB30SD

I don’t know… in a perfect world we get dix in RD 1 and whittner in FA.

To me that would be a A+ DB offseason for emery, but it’s pretty much a foregone conclusion that we’re doing dline in 1 unless all three of our top guys come off the board before 14.

          • Johnathan Wood

I think the focus this offseason should be more on DL than CB/S. If you give out a big contract to a S in FA and then draft one in round 1, that really limits what you can do on the DL.

Great safeties + a mediocre DL=mediocre (at best defense). But a really good DL with mediocre safeties can be a good solid D.

Can’t fix everything as much as you would like in one offseason, so if I’m Emery I’m doing everything in my power to get a badass DL and just getting by with competent guys to patch holes elsewhere.

          • MB30SD

            yep. I get it.

I’d be really happy with picking up joseph and Hittner (SS) in FA, Donald in Rd1, and in rd 2 the best player available at DL… unless there’s an obvious bigger value pick at FS. Then DL or a Center in 3.

          • Irish Sweetness

            Mmmm…..

            Deone Bucannon, S, Washington State
            Height: 6-1. Weight: 215.
            Projected 40 Time: 4.56.
            Projected Round (2014): 2-3.
2/3/14: Bucannon has a nice mix of ball skills, run-support tackling and hard hitting ability. In 2013, the senior assembled six interceptions with 114 tackles, three forced fumbles and one pass broken up. He had a solid performance at the Senior Bowl.

            or fro SS…

            Dion Bailey*, S, USC
            Height: 6-0. Weight: 210.
            Projected 40 Time: 4.60.
            Projected Round (2014): 2-3.
2/3/14: Bailey remained a play-maker in 2013 despite moving back to safety. He recorded five interceptions with 62 tackles, 6.5 tackles for a loss, .5 sacks and six passes broken up on the season. Bailey had a big game against Stanford to help pull off an upset for the Trojans. He was all over the field against Derek Carr and Fresno State in USC’s Las Vegas Bowl win.

8/18/13: The speedy and instinctive Bailey is a very good pass-defender. He was a good Will linebacker in Monte Kiffin’s Tampa 2 at USC in 2012, totaling 80 tackles, eight tackles for a loss, four interceptions and five passes broken up. Bailey had 81 tackles, two interceptions and two sacks as a freshman in 2011. He has ballhawk ability and is back to playing safety in 2013. If that doesn’t go well, Bailey could add weight to play outside linebacker in the NFL. He is competing for a starting position.

            But what are … y’know .. Phil’s plans ?

          • Irish Sweetness

How do they know he lacks cover skills if he was playing SS ??? These fuckers …. if he can play SS well, then he can play FS.

“To answer those who’ve asked who I favor Bears drafting: seven guys who can tackle well.”

Are there even 7 in the ENITRE LEAGUE anymore that qualify as such?

  • MB30SD

you know, I honestly don’t get jeff’s disdain for the combine and the process of seeing what these kids are athletically. Yes, it says little about who’ll actually be good at playing real football or not, but it’s all part of the process. It’s fun, interesting, and it’s the only fucking thing going on in fb for the next month or so… why not dive into it full force and enjoy what little fb related anything we have right now?!

Half of the fun is seeing how freakish these kids are and then postulating which teams will take which players where.

You not like this jeff is totally bizarro world to me… like being a rabid foody and not really giving a shit about how they source, cook, and prepare the amazing meal you’re about to eat. Seems like a pretty… provincial… viewpoint to me son.

    • MB30SD

      CAN I GET A HALLELUJAH!?!?!

(looks around frenetically with crazy eyes and outstretched hands waiting to be given handfuls of writhing, poisonous serpents)

    • Johnathan Wood

The most important parts of the combine are the medical exams and interviews, but the media doesn’t have as much access to those, so they don’t get hyped.

      • MB30SD

jooooooon…. I’m talking fun here man. F-U-N… things… to watch. Not fucking medical reports.

Your new nickname from here on out, which works perfectly as a double entendre, is going to be… “Data”. You’re not lime green are you?

(I was going to go with Spock, but it doesn’t do the double duty as well)

(in a monoton flatlined voice): “why yes MB, the 40 yard dashes and bench press feats of strength are indeed more entertaining, but it is the medical reports that count in the grand scheme of things. Did you not know this already?”

        • Johnathan Wood

how’s this: I personally find the Combine boring and have never watched it myself. I will follow some of the numbers and chatter on Twitter, but try to avoid buying into the hype because, as we discussed below, measurables are often vastly overrated.

Now I’ll remove the monotone: the only way I would watch the Combine is if they had hot chicks in skintight suits doing the workouts instead of beefy dudes.

          • MB30SD

            OHHHH… look at you!

I see it! I see the thinly veiled subtext about my homoerotic preferences for watching slo mos of muscled gladiators running sprints with their junk flopping to and fro! I see!!!!

Yeah, probably a meathead thing. I do marvel at the physical feats… the barely harnessed penises are just an added bonus.

          • Irish Sweetness

Look at Cor and Spock giving that the thumbs up.

Happy Trails talented Actor / Writer / Producer / Director and Chicago Guy, Harold Ramis. Done too soon at 69.

  • el_caney

After watching the combine, I´m inclined to:

    1. gamble with Hageman and to sign L. Joseph as free agent, and finish the running avenues´s problem in the DL.
    2. trade to last 10 picks for aditional second round. and go for Dennar or Donald or Ealy (best aviable) no matter free agency signs.
    3. pick with 14 Pryor or Justin Gilbert and sing Melton in free agency

    • MB30SD

so you want us to pick up hageman AND pryor… in the first rd… and give away every pick but rd 1 and 2 to get an extra 2nd. Is that correct?

      Sounds about right.

      • Johnathan Wood

tough to say for sure, but I think he’s saying do one of those 3 things.

        • MB30SD

why… why not mix and match………. data.

          • Irish Sweetness

Cmdr. Data or Spock … they’re both yours … you decide. Spock has more of a ring to it, plus the older fans can relate ….

      • el_caney

        and sense.

    • gpldan

Why is Hageman a gamble? Because he’s a Gopher?

    • Irish Sweetness

After completely ignoring the Combine .. .I’m just backing Phil.

BTW – I retract everything I said about Mr. Donald, I thought he was 6’5.

A 6’0 4-3 end Jefe ? You have got to be pulling our chains.

      • el_caney

that´s why trade back or play “safety” suits more and more sense.

    • Irish Sweetness

      CENTERRRRRRRRRRRRRR !!I

I likey though. Why not get rid of lower picks and concentrate on picking up talent. It’s not like there’s a law that says you must draft 7 guys. Sign quality/high upside FA guys and get three quality prospects from your 3 picks in the draft. Sounds solid to me.

      • MB30SD

        Kam chancellor – Rd 5, Tom Brady – Rd 5… etc… etc…

You just have to have a gm that sees dead people and has great scouts.

What you don’t fucking do ever again is pick up a 3rd Rd gamble project situational player with you first pick…. ever.

      • el_caney

sounds even more solid when talent declines from 4, unless your are angelo, and focus on quality prospects!! lower the risk of drafting scrap.

  • gpldan

Bullough will be there at the end of 4 if we are looking for a Mike that’s more stout at the point of attack than Bostic.

    http://www.detroitnews.com/article/20140224/SPORTS0101/302240097/

He’d get torched dropping into deep zone, with his slow feet, but he’d be a run stopper. And with a proper trainer, the kid would play at 255. Also, we will probably need to replace Contanzo as 2nd string Mike, since he’ll get paper for his ST play – despite his stupid fucking ST plays this year including that botched onside kick.

    • Johnathan Wood

he seems like a better 3-4 LB to me. Thumper in the mold of Brandon Spikes. That’s not the type of LB Emery has liked so far. Has gone for converted safeties with plus athleticism for coverage.

      • gpldan

        True – he’s a very non-Emery kind of guy.

  • MB30SD

Hey data, how about this guy:

Deone Bucannon, S, Washington State: There is a perceived drop-off at safety after Alabama’s Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and Louisville’s Calvin Pryor. Don’t mistake that statement with a lack of talent at the position.

Bucannon could be the best of the rest. He stands 6-1 and between 210 and 220 pounds (he was closer to the latter at the Senior Bowl, then dropped down under 215 for the combine). There have been questions about his speed, even as a safety who has shown the ability to come down into the box and make plays. He put some of those fears to rest on Tuesday thanks to a 4.53 40 that’s plenty fast for a safety.

    http://nfl.si.com/2014/02/25/2014-nfl-combine-risers-sliders-day-4/?eref=sihp

    • Johnathan Wood

oh goody, I have a nickname now.

I really like Buccanon too. He was my favorite round 2 S prospect until I got around to watching Ward tape after the Senior Bowl. I would prefer Ward over him, but either in round 2 would make me happy.

      • MB30SD

Ok, so I’m going to get flack from some of the guys (that never played.. uHEM!) but dude… FS and SS are NOT the same thing. I get in today’s hybrid Ds that blitz and have crazy nickle/dime packages that both safety’s have to be versatile, but let’s uss the gold standard D as a perfect example shall we? You know, for empirical evidence, not just MB’s delirious mind.

Kam Chancellor: 6’3″, 235lbs, 4.62 40 time —— STRONG Safety (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jz2Uz60Dekk) see how he always lines up on the STRONG side and covers mostly the TE and/or the back out of the backfield… and is primarily responsible for run support and stuffing the box on the run, the short stuff in pass.

Earl Thomas: 5’10” 200lbs, 4.43 40 time —— FREE Safety (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOpdtd4ET9I) Over the top, last line of defense in pass, 2ndary run support on run.

Now, I know you know all this… so please don’t antagonize me by saying we can just take a SS in the draft he can play FS for us. Yes, it would be better than converting another shitty corner, but still a project move.

        • Johnathan Wood

I understand they’re not exactly the same thing, but the roles are changing and merging together as the game changes. I’m just looking for best safety in the draft, regardless of positional designation.

          • SC Dave

I agree here. It’s not like we need a FS more than we need a SS.

        • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

You know, I was just thinking about this. How the Hawks went old school FS/SS. A lot of the league was going interchangable safeties to counter TEs and pass-happy attacks.

But the Hawks said, “Fuck you, we’re putting a SS in the box like it’s Tecmo Bowl. Our stud FS will clean up the backside (can Dix clean up the backside? bwhahaah)”

It worked, mainly because of their pass rush.

I wonder if other teams, like the Bears, will go that route. It’s always punch-counterpunch with Os and Ds.

That extra SS in the box helps with running QBs too. You would think that a Saints/Broncos O would expose it, but nope. I really wonder how our O would fare against that D.

We almost beat them when it was the Jay-Bmarsh playing backyard football with the Genius Tice calling the shots.

I would love to see how our trees go against them.

We just need a power runner to run those fuckers over from time to time.

          • MB30SD

See I don’t think it’s old skool over in seattle. Kam can play over the top, but his strength is as a run fill, TE, under pass guy… but he can play the pass too.

So data, I see you down there, I don’t see a lot of teams interchanging their safeties, I just see teams getting GOOD players at that spot and they make plays all over the field.

We have dogshit at both positions so we’re willing to try and crowbar a SS into a FS spot.

Why don’t we just find a way to get a good fs and a good ss and play them at their natural positions – crazy talk I know… maybe we can try chicken dinner or bmarsh at fs? Irish? Anyone? Smh.

          • Doooonnnn’t Caaaaare!

Brandon had to play safety his Junior year at Central Florida and led the team in INT’s.

          • Irish Sweetness

I have no doubt Brandon would excel at Safety. NTIM.

          • Irish Sweetness

I think we could play either of those and get better results. Seriously. Whatever we do, it can’t get much worse.

        • Irish Sweetness

Oh c’mon mang …. it’s football ..if the guy’s smart then he’s likely filled in at safety at some point. Depending on his build he can play the other in the NFL, albeit a transition, and yes, a bit of a project. But if he’s smart and fast ….

        • Irish Sweetness

Thomas is a bit small for me, but damn… Chancellor is BM-sized … I seriously think maybe we should be looking at LBs with good coverage skills to convert to SS. We need that size.

          • MB30SD

            STOP STOP STOP!!!!

NOOOOOO…we should be looking at big SS to leave them at SS.

yeah, kinda sad. Irish’s aliens are sth at us. Teachers should be the ones, not athletes and movie stars.

        • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

I’m not sure WHY teachers aren’t paid more. Can someone please give me some sort of rational explanation for this?

Even if you’re a free market guy, smart kids are an investment all around. You might put your kid in a rich ass boarding school, while other kids go to broken down slums. Guess what? One of these days, those kid’s paths will cross. Just ask Bill Cosby.

Don’t parents want their kid’s generation to be better? Teachers need to get paid more. I don’t think non-teachers know just how many hours teachers have to put in, or maybe they think teaching isn’t that hard.

Well, get a room full of teenagers and try teaching them something sometime. See how that goes. They’ll probably start playing Angry Birds after 2 minutes lol

This is where I think we might be interesting to aliens (other than that they engineered us). Do you think aliens have sports ? Do they get high and make great music like The Beatles?

Or are they the worst party guests imaginable, and just brilliant at physics, multi-dimensional mathematics and mind-bending?

Do they have Salvador Dalis or Beethovens? Do they have E-type Jaguars?

Maybe not. Maybe we’re the coolest cats around?

Speaking of cats, there are 3,200 tigers left on earth, and we wiped out 97% of them in the last century.

When I explain to my kids in the years to come what daddy was playing with in the videos, I’ll have to tell them they were Tigers, but that there aren’t any left.

You can’t really think that way. I think of it like a karma trade-off. After 40 with kids, you stop worrying about what happens to you anymore. Your life is run. Yes, you have 25 more years hopefully, but weddings, college and automobiles that are not your own. Stops mattering. So that’s what you focus on.

Chinese state-sponsored hackers took down Bitcoin and Mt. Gox.

Kinda cool site, you can watch bitcoin flow into nations. You can see the Chinese loading up on the transactions.

    http://fiatleak.com/

    • MB30SD

wonder if it was politically motivated. Noticed the media going apeshit today that the bitcoin might be going extinct.

      • gpldan

Just sit and watch fiatleak for a few moments. Watch how many global transactions are being originated by CHinese IP addresses. This is a fucking bank heist, kids. Worthy of anything starting Jet Li and Jason Statham.

If you know anybody who accepts bitcoin as valid currency, stop them. Because by next week, this thing is going to be shut down and made illegal. Right now, Chinese UberHackers are catalog ordering everything they can find. Stephanie Seymour calendars, Three Wolf T-shirts, used Ferraris at HK dealerships, ANYTHING.

Take: $350M. Not bad for not leaving your smog enriched home, China. Not bad.

          • gpldan

            The latter.

Exploiting bitcoin’s problem with transaction malleability is what they call an advanced persistent attack. It’s not something you do one day with some exploit code. You carefully worm your way into the brokerage system and you get all Richard Pryor with it, until you suspect the gig is up, then you can slam the system and drain wallets that were foolishly escrowed.

The crypto bug for this was Ph.D. work. Not the work of anybody amateur.

What Emery said: “The No. 1 thing for Chris making improvements is Chris himself. I’m not counting on other guys getting better to help another player
improve. It’s on them each individually. … Chris knows he has to
compete to start. My vision is for him to win it. I would love to be
talking to him about a contract extension. So let’s see what he does.”

    dwiederer@tribune.com

This doesn’t sound like a GM that is getting ready to draft a CB early in the draft.

    • MB30SD

We have a CB named chris?

    • Johnathan Wood

Conte is a S. And even if you DO bring him back to start, there’s still a hole opposite him at safety.

Emery said Conte will compete to start. This tells me they bring in 2 safeties-one in FA, one in draft-and let the three of them duke it out for two spots.

      • MB30SD

agree 100% with your take jon.

I read that as, ‘chris conte is dogshit and we need a new FS or two… chris isn’t getting cut right now because we need to actually have the new guys signed and physically in halas hall first… then he’ll have to fight for his life to stay on this team because of the ‘performance’ he put on in 2013.’

        • Johnathan Wood

Honestly I would be very surprised if he’s not on the roster this year. He’s cheap and experienced, that’s at the very least a valuable backup to have. Seems likely to me he’ll be competing with a rookie for a starting spot, with the loser the top backup safety.

I guess this list is based on record sales but I’m baffled how Louisiana could be represented by Kevin Gates. You could swing a cat by the tail in New Orleans and hit 100+ people more talented. Oh well. Interesting for sure.

    • MB30SD

  • George Hernandez

I was looking at Willie Young from the Lions, might be able to get him at a reasonable price and he graded out well versus the run and pass. I don’t realistically believe we have a shot at Bennett anymore now that the Seahawks are carving out room specifically to get him. If we release Pep, we are going to need a competent defensive end, especially if we are looking to draft one at 14. Young, Woot, Ealy, Bass Washington is a nice rotation to go with Ratliff, Joseph, Paea, Draft Pick. That should leave some money for secondary help and Josh.

  • Barb UMihai Mar

The Bears can’t take a DT at 14. You need to get playmakers at that spot…pass-rushers, CB or S. You can always find big time DT after that… second day of the draft or FA… for example the 2 FA DTs from Miami. PS: I would take an offensive player at 14 instead of a DT… a slot reciver that can PR.
