    Chicago Bears: A

This is how to supercharge a rebuild.

Most free agents ignored the Chicago Bears last year. One Mitchell Trubisky encouraging half-season later, the team not only signed Gabriel this offseason, but also inked star wideout Allen Robinson and tight end Trey Burton as well.

General manager Ryan Pace and his front office went all-in on boundary corners, too. They re-upped Prince Amukamara and fended off the Green Bay Packers to retain Kyle Fuller.

Grabbing a top free-agent wideout like Robinson—someone who’s key to a potential franchise passer’s development, no less—as well as prioritizing premium positions on defense is exactly how a team should operate with a signal-caller locked up on a cheap rookie contract. To top it all off, the Bears select eighth in the draft, which is better known as Quenton Nelson range. —–http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2765438-grading-every-nfl-teams-free-agency-performance

Loyola played a great game last night to beat Nevada. The game started slow with the ball being fed inside to Krutwig but early foul trouble changed the nature of the game to up tempo, a slashing offense scoring in the paint on dribble drives and swarming D. Fun game to watch as a “team” took out the better athletes.

I keep thinking each of the last few offseasons that they’ve made enough improvements to go 8-8, but injuries have really derailed the last 3 years.
If a rookie coach gets this club to 8-8 this year, I’m going to be pretty excited for ’19.

How cool would it be to get into the playoffs in ’20 just to have a shot for the Bears 100th birthday?

    • willbest

They weren’t going 8-8 if everybody stayed healthy last year.

      • Dis Guy Trublinsky (Johnnywad)

They had 6 one score losses. Two of those were by a field goal and one by a single point. You don’t think they win 3 of those with professional wide receivers and a starting TE? Or at least had a shot?

        • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

It’s the Bears, we won’t have any professional WRs or TEs by week 3 because of injury.

          • John F

You left out the offensive line and linebackers

        • John F

Most losses in the NFL are one score losses, most games go down to the last or second-to-last possession.

Bad teams lose close games ……….

          • Dis Guy Trublinsky (Johnnywad)

We’re not talking about most teams or most games. We’re talking about whether or not the Bears could have flipped three close games if they had their entire team healthy. I say yes. They nearly won those games without receivers or their best tight end. So my theory goes, Bear with me here, better players on the field, especially all of the ones they hoped to start the season with………., just may……. once in a while…….., change the outcome of a close game.

            But that’s just me.

I’m curious what you’re going to do with yourself when they do start winning. That’ll be interesting.

          • John F

“I’m curious what you’re going to do with yourself when they do start winning.”

I haven’t had to worry about that for most of the last 25 years. There’s a reason they have stunk all that time – new coaches, new GM’s, new players haven’t changed anything. Why in the world would I think anything would change now?

And as far as the receivers and TE being hurt, if they were healthy it would have been the OL, or RB’s or QB. It is always something, and when you can’t draft for shit (like the Bears), you have bad backups and you end up being a bad team. It’s not that complicated really.

          • Dis Guy Trublinsky (Johnnywad)

Yeah. Cool. You’ve completely disregarded the point of the conversation you stepped into again. See, it was a hypothetical about the ENTIRE roster being healthy.

It’s crazy how many ways you find to say the same thing repeatedly.

          • John F

The entire roster being healthy is a pretty good point.

It seems to me that the vast majority of the time, because the talent level isn’t THAT different between most NFL teams, that the teams with the least amount of injuries usually make it to the playoffs. It would seem obvious, but I wonder if people notice that.

The 2006 Bears were the perfect example ……… once normal injuries started, they became a 7-9 or 9-7 team.

By the way, I think it is a highly developed skill to be able to say the same thing over and over in various ways ………..

          • Irish Sweetness

If your entire team is healthy then you win a Lombardi.

        • willbest

They also won 2 games by 1 score so they went 2-6 in “close” games.

But the issue is that those games change as the Bears score points or get different field positions. So you can’t just say having Robinson/Meredith means the Bears win. And I would further point out the game the Bears were most likely to win with professional WRs would have been the Atlanta game, and Fox doesn’t bench Glennon if he is 2-2.

          • Dis Guy Trublinsky (Johnnywad)

Then why do we drone on and on about better players and draft busts and busted FAs if better players don’t make for wins in close games?

Mebbe, not, but Whitten is not the problem. The Cowboys are in Cap hell. As of yesterday, they couldn’t even afford to pay their new draft picks and hey HAVE to clear enough space for that before the draft. Dez has announced he will NOT redo his deal but Dallas cannot afford to keep him at his current rate.

          • willbest

I think they can clear 6.5 million by cutting witten. The guy has been nothing but professional for them and hasn’t missed a game in 14 years, but he is turning 36 next month. I can see it being a forte situation where they decide to let him go a year early than a year late.

Dez is 29, and been under performing his contract. He knows he is gone and won’t get that money from anybody else. This is a show me year for him. And they only save 8.5 million by cutting him.

  • catfish44

MY BEARS #8 choice.- roguan smith, middle linebacker. he has the sideline to sideline speed and instincts to be an all-pro. quenton nelson won’t be there. minkah fitzpartrick might be, and would be very good. edmunds fulfills a need, but i believe he lacks instincts. smith is going to be better. instincts/ a feel for football so important. i played football, basketball, and fast pitch softball. fair athlete, but good instincts and feel. if you have a feel for what the offense is doing that anticipation gives you a big edge. aaron rodgers once said urlachler was the best with football knowledge/ instincts that he saw defensively. that, along with his physical attributes, made urlacher great. very important. if the bears can find a defensive end to put next to goldman, and an edge rusher later on in the draft, harold landry, marcus davenport, or someone out of nowhere along with roguan smith and trevathan they could have a hell of a defense. elite.

      • AlbertInTucson

I’m sure the charges are race-based.

      • SC Dave

Collecting sympathy from people that don’t understand that said person is *unqualified* for the job?

      • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

I don’t give a fuck who you are or who you know, and it does not matter if the person is a paraplegic or not. She was doing her job. How about having respect for someone in a position of authority? She was not the only one there telling him he could not gain access to the field at that spot. Follow the fucking rules and there would be no issue. Break the rules and accept the consequences.

        • SC Dave

Couldn’t help it. I do believe in the rule of law.

        • willbest

Who said there shouldn’t be consequences?

That the current Seattle Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee committed A&B seems pretty straight forward, although it is a curiosity that it took a year to file charges.

That doesn’t negate the idiotic staffing decisions of the security company.

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

Per the curiosity of waiting a year to file charges: She could have gone through the normal channels of the security company, who could have delayed the process in hopes an agreement could have been made without the need for charges to be filed. I know if I was in charge of the company, I really would try to avoid filing charges against a high profile person who happens to be an employee of the company you have a contract with. Optics are everything. Filing charges brings it into the public eye, and some are blaming the company for their hiring practices. Also not sure what the statute of limitations is in Texas for assault.

      • CanadaBear

Victim blaming at it’s finest. FFS wil, only a complete asshole would get physical with an old person with disabilities. The security company is counting on that. I’m guessing 1 security person in 1,000 could physically handle Bennett in a confrontation. When security companies pay minimum wage (or close to it) they aren’t exactly getting Sgt Rock and His Howling Commandos.

        • willbest

Sorry, you can’t say I blamed the victim. The victim was supposed to stop bennett. That is the job. The fault was in the employer ever putting them in that situation. And incidentally, in some states (though probably not Texas) you can circumvent workerman’s comp laws when the employer is grossly negligent.

And contrary to your super power claim, having elderly disabled people trying to stop patrons, 1/3rd of whom are probably drunk, from going to restricted areas would qualify to a lot of juries.

          • CanadaBear

Tell me where they find all the security personnel that could physically keep Bennett from entering the field? They would need one at every spot where someone could enter the field along with hundreds of other areas where there could be trouble.

          • willbest

Its not just about keeping Bennett from entering the field. Which is going to be impossible without a cattle prod if he were sufficiently motivated. But the difference between this lady and myself (all of 5’10 and 185) is that I would expect any confrontation could escalate to physical and thus be better prepared to mitigate the harm to myself. I would also be better able to render aid to nearby security if things go sideways.

Oh and just because everybody but former NFL linebackers that keep in peak physical shape would be hosed against the bennetts of the world doesn’t mean somebody like myself couldn’t handle 95% of the people in attendance where that woman couldn’t handle 1% of them.

          • CanadaBear

I seriously doubt you could handle 95% of them. I think it’s reasonable to assume the vast majority of people would do what the lady said because they know physically assaulting an elderly disabled lady is beyond any social compact.

          • willbest

The job serves two functions 1) reduce the number of trouble makers by putting an element of human watcher on their conduct; 2) handle the people that do get out of line. I don’t know why you are hell bent on implying that #2 isn’t a critical job function.

As for me, I think you are over estimating the physical fitness of the average Super Bowl attendee. A club downtown for 20-something not a chance. But demographic that skews older and richer (which tends to me less physically active), I can handle the vast majority of them. Sure there going to be the pro-athletes from other sports in attendance and the like, but the stadium holds 72,000 people. 5% is 3,600. That is a lot of people in peak physical shape when the method of acquiring tickets is big shot at a Fortune 500 company, luck in a lottery drawing, or having a spare $5-10k lying around.

          • CanadaBear

            Glory in your spunk!

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

You guys are assuming that it was this lady against Bennet. From reports, there were several Security people there telling him not to access the field. I find this even worse because he disregarded several and reports said he pushed several. It only the old woman that got injured.

BEARS SAID TO BE LOOKING AT HIM. Johnathan Hankins, NT, Colts. Age: 26.
The Colts made a great trade with the Jets, but Frank Reich isn’t off to a good start as head coach of the Colts. He has decided to switch to a 4-3 Tampa-2 defense, which means his best defender, Johnathan Hankins, no longer fit the system. Hankins was cut as a result. Just 26, Hankins is a very talented defensive tackle who generates pressure on opposing quarterbacks and stuffs the run effectively when healthy. He’s currently one of the top free agents available, due to Indianapolis’ incompetence.

If Manziel hasn’t played in a WCO then what could he provide other than distraction?

          • leftcoastdave

I believe Canadian team owns his contract rights.

          • CanadaBear

Not sure how that works but whenever a player from the CFL gets a chance to play in the NFL, there doesn’t seem to be any issue contract-wise. I’m guessing they have language in the contract that allows them to leave for the NFL.

      • Dis Guy Trublinsky (Johnnywad)

Does it matter? Other than Manziel being a total distraction and waste of time and money, does his WCO pedigree matter? How many current Bears have played in the offense they’re about to? Aren’t they all learning it from scratch?

How do we draft offensive players if previous WCO experience is a pre-req?

Sweet… oh wait, that was last weekend Final Four.

Wow… bet their fans/alumni are thrilled.

I was in a restaurant last night, and as the game was coming to the end it got crazy. I suspect half the city is pulling for them.

    • willbest

      Convincingly this time.

  • Russian Hacked Pacebot 2.0

Jeff, make no mistake about it, Obama is still against gay marriage. Has just a smooth fucking operator after years of trial by fire.

    • willbest

Why do you think Obama is so principled or bigoted (if you prefer) on this topic to hold a firm belief?

      • Russian Hacked Pacebot 2.0

he’s just a normal dude that was smart enough to adapt to a changing political environment. Normal dudes don’t fucking revel in guys simulating sex acts on parade floats.
He, like most african americans, could give a fucking shit about this LGBTQ agenda. He is a good solider though and he knows that in order for his party to retain power for the longest period of time he has to suck it up and enjoy it.

    • Irish Sweetness

Gay marriage? No problem. You want tax breaks for that? Get bent. No kids.

  • Russian Hacked Pacebot 2.0

I really wish Jeff hadn’t put those fucking political tweets up. I had been doing a good job of staying out of this bullshit millennial protest that’s been going on.

It’s really fucking easy for a bunch of kids to get together and become activists because they’ve chosen an easy target in the NRA and politicians that on both sides of the aisle that have bent over to special interests for decades. Adults then applaud and are filled with pride and praise because it feeds into their way of thinking as well. It’s way harder to face the reality of why this shit actually happens and why it’s been happening at a record pace since 1999 and what is necessary to curb it.

I guess you have to start somewhere but we all know how this story ends. I just wish we’d address the hard issues. Maybe someday we will.

    • willbest

After the collapse, and you are going to want the guns for the collapse. Or your kids will. I figure they can keep the house of cards going at least another generation or two.

      • Russian Hacked Pacebot 2.0

there won’t be a collapse, it will never get to that point but it will take many more years of decaying society before some harsh penalties for bad behavior are implemented and some personal freedoms taken away. It will be a tough day to stomach for progressives when democrats will be the ones voting for harsh measures. Sooner or later the majority of people who aren’t total fucking scumbags will tire of policies meant to placate the fucking worst of our citizenry. Then the hammer will come down swiftly.

        • willbest

I don’t know. At some point I think some country is going to get its act together and the USD will no longer be the sweetest smelling shit. When that happens its going to make the 1930s look like a mild correction.

        • Irish Sweetness

          “There won’t be a collapse.”

History repeats itself. Oh yes there will. And it will be created on purpose like the rest of them.

        • SC Dave

will tire of policies meant to placate the fucking worst of our
citizenry. Then the hammer will come down swiftly.”

It’s already later, and no hammer yet. I think it will take a collapse of the monetary system for it to happen.

      • Irish Sweetness

This is the only defense for the gun lobby, but it’s a good one. Do people need AR-15s in their home? No. But they will do one day.

    • leftcoastdave

“Adults” don’t just applaud, the Democrat party hacks are supporting this financially as a get out the vote campaign in the same way they financed violent “protesters” at Trump rallies.
Politics is a dirty business because it is so lucrative. Just ask all the former governors of Illinois who are now convicted felons.

      • SC Dave

When the student loan money runs out, and Soros has no more use for them, they will have to get jobs. Attitudes will likely change somewhat then, as they become yet another group disillusioned by the fraud that is Barack Obama.

Thanks for the link. Good read. No wonder the Trib hacks are so poisonous after being locked out of the circle.

      • CanadaBear

The Trib’s (actually Rich Campbell) calling the ST’s Adam’s homers makes me laugh. Granted the Adam’s aren’t writing hit pieces on the Bears but I think the Trib mistakes common decency for homerism.

        • willbest

The trib as a whole has gone down hill the last couple decades. Watching the decline of regional newspaper has been sad.

They should have thrown Ted Phillips out of the plane to make it lighter.

I don’t think they were in trouble, just to make it a bit lighter, y’know?

Interesting to see Eric Reid still on the street. I could see him ending up in Seattle, Carolina or Atlanta.

I’d love to see him as a bear but don’t see that happening.

    • If we didn’t have Action Jackson, Reid would be a Bear.
Still would be nice for depth. I don’t think we even have a backup FS

I feel like anything less than 7 wins would be a failure. Unless you see Mitch (and the offense) play at a really high level, but the defense is just hit by injuries again.
