Roquan Smith To the Starting Lineup!

| May 31st, 2018

Three quick thoughts on this inevitable development:

  • There is a belief in some older-school league coaching circles that somehow young players benefit from starting as third-stringers and working their way into the starting lineup over the laborious period of training camp. When Parcells and Walsh were on the sideline, sure, I’d buy it. But now? Coaches are too limited in the amount of time they can put their hands on players. They get so little actual field time with their starters, never mind the rookies. The smart staffs recognize talent and insert that talent into the starting lineup immediately. Let the kids play themselves out of that spot.
  • This should have happened last season with Mitch Trubisky but the Fox coaching staff was gutless. Because they did not recognize the MASSIVE talent gap between their starter and third-stringer, they botched what could have been a terrific year of development for the kid. (It could be argued the Bears simply waited a year too long to follow the Eagles model.)
  • Am I getting excited about Matt Nagy? Yep. I’m trying not to, because most of this stuff doesn’t matter, but I just like everything happening around the 2018 Chicago Bears right now.

        Maybe.

          Sometimes?

            In the morning … definitely.

    Kevin White showing his speed?

If this translates it will be great.

    • KentuckyBearsFan

might be a reason to watch preseason games (other than out of complete boredom).

    • T.dyon

Great article thank you. I think White is going to excel in whatever opportunity he gets. However there isn’t any room to pay him next year, WR group is topped out. Bears might be able to sign and trade him, similar to what Miami did with Landry.

      • CanadaBear

If he’s lights out they will find a way to sign him.

        • Scharfinator

Yeah, Pace would be able to do a “told you so” signing.

        • T.dyon

Highly unlikely, as they already are close to max for the WR group.

          • CanadaBear

Saving lots of cash in the QB room.

          • T.dyon

True. also other factors could force the necessity to sign him. But at the moment with so many mouths to feed, A.Rob, Burton, White, Cohen, Gabriel, Miller, Shaheen, possibly Wims. It’s nice to have the depth. If White opportunities contribute in the 500-700 yd range. I think absolutely they can resign him.

        • AlbertInTucson

If he’s “Lights Out” I will be (happily) STUNNED!

          • Johnnywad

Mitch is the tide upon which all boats rise.

      • Sactowns#1

NO! If he proves to be a grade A stud, there is no way you trade him.

        • willbest

IF he proves he is a grade A stud you end up tagging him and making him play on the tag because you have no confidence that he will stay healthy in back to back years.

          • Carlos Pendleton

            Great point!!!!

          • Johnnywad

Precisely. That scenario is what the tag is for IMHO.

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

even if he has a borderline good year Pace should still slap the transition tag on him with a 1st round tender.

        • T.dyon

The other choice is to let him sign elsewhere, and get nothing in return.

      • willbest

Bears are going to have 35-40 million in cap space next year assuming they don’t cut any underperformers like Dion Sims. The only FA’s that will require much more than league min are Massie, Goldman, and Amos. And only Goldman has the potential to really run up the dollars.

        • T.dyon

Money needs to be spread proportionally. If A. Rob and Gabriel’s contracts were shorter, maybe Pace could overlap big contracts for the WR position short term. But that isn’t the case.

        • Johnnywad

Amos could put together a season that drives his price up. It would not surprise me. He’s durable as hell and started to show up around the ball a little more last year. I’m curious to see this season if he just remains a perennial JAG or takes a step.

          • CanadaBear

I thought he found himself last year. More of an in-the-box thumper that is OK in coverage. A nice complement to Jackson.

          • willbest

I like Amos. He isn’t a stud. But when he is surrounded by talent, he is starting caliber

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

            Conte 2.0.

    • CanadaBear

Let’s hope. As far as I’m concerned anything they get from him is a bonus.

      • BenderMcLugh

        I like large bonuses. NTTAWWT

  • T.dyon

Trubisky learned what he needed to learn last year. (NFL speed) not much else to develop from our pitiful combination of, scheme,WRs,pass blocking. This year is wide open, the biggest factor is how fast can he digest the scheme and process it.

  • willbest

Police didn’t think they could get him on reasonable doubt after they interviewed him and he provided them with his text messages as evidence.

The University didn’t think it was likely he raped her

She appealed, they found him guilty and expelled him after the fact. The Texan’s cut him as a result.

She is now suing him based on this “conviction”

    https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/30/sports/keith-mumphery-michigan-state.html

These campus rape “trials” are a farce. When he gets around to suing Michigan State they are going to end up paying him out several million

    • BenderMcLugh

ugh, what a shit show. really sucks for the guy, hope he gets that several mil

    • AlbertInTucson

      These campus tribunals gotta go.

Kangaroo courts that just trample your rights.

    • KentuckyBearsFan

      I hope he gets paid.

“The woman says she has been traumatized.”

She should sue the vodka bottle.

“In defense of the vodka bottle, the bottle did not give consent to be being consumed by the accuser because said vodka bottle was full of 20 shots and was in no state to grant consent.”

“But Judge, surveillance videos show the vodka bottle had no trouble keeping it’s balance, except when the victim was swinging it around like a drunken sailor and almost tripped.”

Verdict: Vodka bottle owes victim $1 Billion. (subject to appeal)

      • CanadaBear

The only trauma suffered was brain trauma from the liquor lobotomy. Once in a great while, it’s good to be an old married fart!

    • SC Dave

Assuming he wins, which is not at all a good assumption.

  • Carlos Pendleton

If White perform good the Bears will make room for him, Massie is gone next year, not unless he gets way better than he has shown, Goldman will be signed, Amos is the guy more than likely may get eliminated one way or another because he doesn’t get turnovers and he is replaceable but I hope that he gets some int’s this year, but Fangio says Bush is coming too!!!

  • AlbertInTucson

NFL Radio reports Floyd and Robinson both participating in 7 on 7s.

  • AlbertInTucson

So, Roseanne tweets her show into cancellation.

Meanwhile, one sponsor has bailed on Samantha Bee.

Anyone think Samantha’s backlash will (wait for it) BEE as unfortunate?

    • CanadaBear

That show is small potatoes compared to Roseanne’s show. NTM one is a sit-com and the other is a political (some would add comedy but the few times I watched it, the comedy was non-existent). I’m guessing there might be more backlash but probably not that much.

      • AlbertInTucson

It’s considered a “Hit” for TBS. I’ve only seen promos. I agree it’s not funny.

        • CanadaBear

It’s on the comedy channel up here.

    • willbest

Samantha Bee’s idiotic comment was part of her “script”. It was on tape delay with writing, producing, and legal all giving it the go ahead. She is safe. Roseanne’s was a twit. Maybe Disney should have required that Roseanne put the fucking phone down as a condition of her salary. I mean we are talking about a woman that dressed up like hitler and baked jewbread cookies in the oven. The warning signs were there.

Bee on the other hand should be fired because she can’t get a million people to watch her in live+7. Reruns of Matlock pull down more viewers FFS.

      • Irish Sweetness

        But she’s a Jewess ….

      • AlbertInTucson

Frankly, the fact that it WAS scripted makes it worse than a tweet.

        Premeditated.

    • TomC

A case can be made that Bee’s statement is factually correct. Ivanka is certainly feckless, that has been amply demonstrated. Whether she is a see-you-next-Tuesday is less clear, but face it, most rich people are. Roseanne’s statement about Valerie Jarrett was significantly less factually defensible.

      • AlbertInTucson

Except Bee stated “He (Trump) listens to you”.

You “case” is here by tossed.

    • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

      Samantha who?

      • AlbertInTucson

All I’ve ever seen are (unfunny) promo clips for the show.

    • beninnorcal

The msm double standard is very real. Imagine the backlash if someone called Chelsea Clinton a C***. They would be crucified by the media as sexist.

      • BerwynBomber

Sexism is still okay in this country. Did you pay attention to the last election?

Racism? Yeah, you’re generally a dead duck. Unless you are Trump who seemingly gets away with everything.

And P.S. the snowflakery over the perceived liberal MSM has been very, very tired for three decades.

        • SC Dave

What is more tiresome is deliberate denial of reality by the left.

        • beninnorcal

          ‘Perceived’… riiiiight..

    • Sactowns#1

Good read. Hopefully he’s able to ward off the evils of CTE

    For today:

Steve McQueen was offered the lead male role in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (his attorneys and agents could not agree with Paul Newman’s attorneys and agents on top billing),The Driver, Apocalypse Now, Dirty Harry, A Bridge Too Far, The French Connection and Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
