    Happy 4th everybody!

  • Happy 4th! Have fun with fireworks, but do it safely. Make sure you’re not blowing off any digits like JPP, because then you won’t be able to come on here and type.

    • CanadaBear

Also, consider not shooting off fireworks if there are no kids around. Every dog I’ve ever had always freaked out over fireworks. If there are kids around I totally understand. I certainly shot off my fair share of fireworks as a kid!

      • beninnorcal

My lab who passed away earlier this year never really minded the fireworks. Every other dog I knew thought the world was ending but my guy dgaf. He was trained as a pup at the gun dog kennel we got him from. He was funny, awesome dog, rip.

        • CanadaBear

Gotta love dogs! It reminded me of a funny hunting story. My cousin and I hunted pheasants together for almost 40 years. One year he decided to bring along his Great Dane!!!!!!! Magic was a typical Dane. Super sweet. He FOLLOWED us in the field and the first male pheasant that flushed, we knocked it down and Magic was in another county!!!!!!!! We had to leave my cousin’s jacket on the ground where we were hunting and came back an hour or two later and Magic was laying on the jacket. He never got to go hunting again!!!!

          • AlbertInTucson

Blog lurker, Jeremiah Ha A Bullfrog, had a Great Dane.

            He was a great dog.

          • CanadaBear

One of my best friends had a dandy and numerous other friends have had Danes. I love them. My biggest issue is the short lifespan. I love the way they just curl up on a couch with ya. They are happy to share anything you have. Which isn’t much after they spread out on the couch!

          • AlbertInTucson

Yes, you are lucky to get 9 or 10 years out of Dane.

I once met “Giant George”, Great Dane who lived here in Tucson and was billed, at the time, as “The World’s Largest Dog.”

We’ve had ALL manor of celebrities pass through our studio but NOBODY ever drew as big a crowd as George.

            What a sweetheart.

          • CanadaBear

How big was George? My best friend’s dog, Marvin, was really tall. He weighed about 160 and was lean.

          • AlbertInTucson

            https://www.giantgeorge.com/

            43″ Tall.

            7′ 3″, nose to tail.

            245 lbs.

Alas, he only lasted 8 or 9 years, too, and he was treated by his owner just about as well as one can treat a dog.

He only drove George in his truck as a fellow passenger and eventually stopped touring with him to make it easier on George.

          • CanadaBear

Wow! Marvin was almost as tall as me on all fours. When he would put his front forelegs on my shoulders (from the front, for all you pervs), he towered over me. Every time I went over to my friend’s house I wore crappy clothes and rassled with Marvin for about 45 minutes. As he got older it didn’t last as long.

          • AlbertInTucson

            “Marvin”

            Great name.

        • AlbertInTucson

          Labs are great dogs, too.

        • AlbertInTucson

Man, it is always tough when the dogs leave you.

Worse, I have always had to play “Grim Reaper” and take them in to be put down when the time came.

      • AlbertInTucson

July 5th is ALWAYS the busiest day at animal shelters.

We’ve been thru 5 dogs over 3 plus decades and the only one that didn’t mind the fireworks and thunder was mostly deaf.

        • AlbertInTucson

You haven’t lived until you’ve had terrified Bassett hound try and crawl into your shirt.

          • CanadaBear

I’ll bet you got the hell scratched out of ya! Bassett’s are a trip!

          • AlbertInTucson

            We’ve been thru 3 Bassets.

BTW, we tried a Thundershirt on the last one and it DID help.

No dog, currently, but we ARE looking to rescue somebody..

          • CanadaBear

Fortunately where we live now fireworks are almost a non-issue. Not many kids in the neighborhood. Good on ya for looking into the rescue. I totally understand why people don’t replace pets after a certain age. It makes traveling more complicated among other things. I’ll probably always have a pet. Oddly enough I like cats even more than dogs.

          • AlbertInTucson

The kids have 2 dogs and 2 cats and the dogs come when they visit but we miss having one of our own and there are so many that need a home.

But PLEASE, I cannot stand to watch those 2 minute long ASPCA spots on TV.

          • CanadaBear

I was a little surprised by that when I was down there. For the exact same reason. It seemed like they sold them everywhere.

          • AlbertInTucson

The City Of Tucson, in its infinite wisdom, BANS the USE of fireworks within the city limits but PERMITS THEIR SALE!

            SMH.

In fairness, nothing that leaves the ground is legal here.

Have to go to New Mexico to stock up on rockets.

    Responsibly!!!

I love how fast this offense is going to be.
    #HowardisourBlount

    • Howard is Blount + Ajayi. Those are very similar players who combined for basically a lead RB number of carries.

I’ve actually spent the last few days putting together a CHI/PHI/KC offensive comparison that’s coming out next week. It’s long (2000 words), but there’s a lot of good nuggets in there about the similarities and differences between PHI and KC and why I think Chicago’s personnel matches what PHI does better.

      • SC Dave

Why not assume the Bears will have their own offense? Is the thought that it’s all about Nagy and Helfrich dies not matter?

        • They won’t be exactly like either team, but those are two variations of largely the same offense. So I’m looking at some of the differences between the two to see which one Chicago might more closely resemble.

          • SC Dave

Cool… got any Oregon tape you’re looking at to get a Helfrich angle?

          • This actually isn’t tape. It’s a number of stats that show overall trends. Formations, rotation frequencies, positions that are featured more or less. That kind of stuff.

  • CanadaBear

Serious question. Why in the world is the hot dog eating contest a thing? I truly don’t know and have never known even one person that gives a shit about it. TBH I think it’s sick.

    • willbest

If I had to guess, it either started off as two drunk frat guys arguing about who could eat more hotdogs in 5 minutes, and the other drunk frat guys thought it was funny and made it an annual thing. Or some Japanese TV producer decided it would make an awesome game show challenge.

The appeal I presume is the disgust/curiosity that is present in such competitions.

      • CanadaBear

Do you know even one person that gives a crap about it? Every year it seems like every sports radio show talks about it incessantly for one day. For me it rates right up there with Groundhog Day.

        • willbest

I do, but he is Japanese.

At least it’s a physical activity of sorts. I figure we aren’t too many years away from e-gaming getting air time on sports radio

          • CanadaBear

            That would be riveting!

        • AlbertInTucson

For me, tthe fact that ESPN covers it like it was an actual sporting event speaks volumes about ESPN.

    • AlbertInTucson

Just the thought of somebody stuffing 74 hot dogs down their throat kills my appetite.

      It’s repulsive.

      • CanadaBear

If you do the math (that’s how my brain works) it’s about 8 seconds/dog and bun. If I tried that someone would have to put the Heimlich maneuver on me by the second dog!

        • AlbertInTucson

          Ugh.

I CAN still do TWO fully dressed dogs but, I try to keep it two 1 anymore because, really, that’s all I actually need.

Hot dogs are the perfect vehicle for the consumption of onions.

          • CanadaBear

Heartburn and gas, big time. Just not worth it. My wife has horrible reactions to onions so they got removed from my diet for the most part a long time ago. When I indulge it just kills me.

Onions are a no-no for my wife, as well.

          • AlbertInTucson

It’s not like he sustained season ending injuries and possibly career threatening damage while robbing old ladies and stabbing them to death.

  • SC Dave

Was watching some shit on Nfl Network, and it’s sad to realize that although Trubisky could become the best Bears QB in my life, he could still end up worst in the division anyway.

    • SC Dave

Oh, and some shit about Blount getting $2M for a year.

Sure hope we offer JH a fuckton more when he gets 1700yds and 15 TD this year.

      • honest question: who’s the last RB who’s not a significant factor as a pass-catcher who got a big contract in the NFL? I don’t even know.

And most of those guys seem to bounce around trying to find a team that values them as much as they think they’re worth. Blount, Ajayi, Hyde all on at least their 2nd team in first 5 years. None of them signed a 2nd contract with the team that drafted them.

Now Howard is a better runner than any of those, so maybe this turns out differently. But I think he’s probably only got 2 years left as a Bear.

        • There were 2 I could think of since 2000 who got paid without really factoring in much through the air: Ricky Williams and Jamal Lewis. Both have been retired for close to ten years.

          • SC Dave

            Adrian Peterson

          • Good call, how could I forget him?

          • AlbertInTucson

Injured most of 2016 and not much to show for 2017 must have erased him from your NFL consciousness.

          • AP was the only player to rack up 3,000 yds in his first 2 seasons , won roy, and made PB right away.
Howard is not quite at that level sitting at 2,400 yds.

Howard will need a 1,700 + season to earn a big 2nd contract.

And in order for him to do that he’s going to have to turn some of those 20 yders into 60 yd tds like AP

          • Irish Sweetness

            ???
Eric Dickerson had almost 4000 yards rushing alone in his first 2 seasons (3,900) and almost 4500 yards from scrimmage. That’s 1000 yards more than AP in two years.

BTW – Eric averaged 113 YPC his rookie year (to AP’s 95) and 131 YPC his second year (to AP’s 110).

          • AlbertInTucson

Yes, but Buddy predicted the Bear defense could get him to lay it down a couple of times in the ’85 NFC championship game which, he did.

        • Irish Sweetness

Yup. You can’t pay a guy top dollar to do half the job. One contract as a Bear. That’s how it goes.

    • Russian Hacked Pacebot 2.0

Dave, I’ll bet you a six pack of your favorite beer that he doesn’t sniff Cutler’s records. I want him to but I don’t think he will.

      • SC Dave

        I did say “could” become.

I’m not sold yet either. I need to see something first – you know that old Missouri thing (not that I’m from there, but…)

      • Cutler had 23,443 yards and 154 TDs in Chicago.

If Trubisky is the starter for 7 more years (rest of his rookie deal + another contract), he would need to average 3,035 yards and 21 TDs a season to match Cutler.

He won’t need to be a great QB to stick around that long, and he won’t need to play great to match Cutler’s stats if he’s around for a while. I think there’s a very solid chance that Trubisky ends up breaking those records. Not guaranteed, but a solid chance.

        • Russian Hacked Pacebot 2.0

that kind of production plus a run game and a stout D/Special teams will keep you relevant every year.
We just can’t draft like shit for a decade straight, have the worst O line in the league, have no WR’s for long stretches of time and hire OL coaches to call plays and we should be all set.

I’d really like Trubisky to ball out though and having a creative playcaller and some dangerous weapons should make for a fun and interesting season.

          • leftcoastdave

Give Pace the credit he is due. From “worst O line” to the first focus (with D line) of his rebuild. WR’s are frosting. You first need the cake. He built it, including the most important O positions of TE, RB and QB without busting the bank.

            We be ready to rock.

        • AlbertInTucson

And if he doesn’t exceed those stats within 3 or 4 seasons, they guy is a bust!

      • leftcoastdave

As I said, he and his staff know them better than anybody. Now he has players who have been in his system as the core of the D, does he have the tools in his bag to turn the tide?

You couldn’t give us the tldw; answer?

      • KentuckyBearsFan

Not by much is the short answer.

The gear got better and more people started playing every sport with the advent of radio, TV, and money. More specialized body types for every sport when coaches used to think the average body type was the best for every sport.

Also, rat poison with brandy was no longer considered a performance enhancing drug.
( which the 1904 Olympic marathon winner used)

        • Irish Sweetness

Interesting. Warfarin would thin the blood, the brandy dilates the vessels. I like. Also, brandy would help with the 100M. You might not win, but would feel fairly positive about the whole situation …

          • KentuckyBearsFan

the 1904 Olympian used strychnine with brandy.

A blood thinner with blood vessel dilator sounds like there would be complications.

Raised risks of internal bleeding especially during heavy physical activity? I’m guessing.

  • Irish Sweetness

I’ve already delved into Fantasy season. Drafted a few teams now. It’s an interesting perspective into the season’s general vibe, and where your team fits into it. The Bears don’t, I see. The DST, definitely. I can see them scoring big to rival Baltimore early doors. But the offensive players just aren’t attractive.

You can’t really start Tarik Cohen in a coveted RB spot, and if you can’t find a better flex then you’re doing it wrong.

You can draft Jordan Howard but then you’re doing it wrong even in a standard league. In PPR you’re shooting yourself in the foot when you can get more points from almost any other back in that tier. Maybe Jordan breaks out this year with rushing TDs …. but why would you draft him?

Allen Robinson? Why? Is he getting 10-12 looks a game? With all of our targets? Will Mitchell zone in on A-Rob like Cutty would? I don’t think so. I see a balanced offense where the receivers get the ball sprayed around. A-Robs games will be 4 or 5 catches for 125 plus a TD every couple of games. Something like that. Gabriel, White or even Miller might step up, competition is rife. They’ll feed off each other. Burton is in there. Tarik Frickin Cohen is in the mix. Where does A-rob get the love in the middle of all of that?

Antonio Brown isn’t getting much love. Nor Zeke, nor Fournette. Julio is yesterday’s man. AJ Green.

But you can pick the Bears DST up in the last round before you get your kicker. No problem.

I can see the Bears’ D causing people problems until the injuries rack up, but whether or not Mister Biscuit can run this offense well – that’s the biggest question for me. Can he adjust a game when the shit hits the fan?

Won’t catch us, our disguises are too good. Mullet wigs, drinking Natty Ice and driving jacked up trucks blaring Kid Rock on the stereo. No one would suspect a group of middle age white collar guys of doing it.

          • willbest

neighborhood blacks would find it in their hearts to talk to the police (or the media) if it were a bunch of white folks doing it. Your visual is amusing nonetheless.

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

Thank you, you just added to our disguise. Black Face, with mullets, they will all be so confused.

      • Be surprised how true that is

        • willbest

If you know Chicago, you know that the reverse is true. Memorial Day weekend there is a time honored tradition of south side gangs flooding the northside beaches and engaging in what can best be described as antisocial behavior. The last couple years this has included Mag Mile.

That con-artist Jesse Jackson is still in business? In 2018?

Christ, what does a “Reverend” have to do to lose that status.

      • willbest

Lots of stupid Rabbis and Imams running around too.

        • KentuckyBearsFan

Maybe Jesse had morals when younger, but my opinion of him changed after reading a book of him becoming a Shakedown artist in his older years. The only one he’s trying to get to the Promised Land the last few decades is himself.

Idiot tried to shakedown Silicon Valley companies saying they weren’t higher enough minorities…when a sizable fraction of the companies were minorities just not African-American. He practically demanded every company have quotas and that they all *must* donate to his shakedown organization to make him rich Most companies consented wanting to make him go away.

It was the equivalent of saying that the NBA must hire shorter men and women.

Careful, you are getting close to badthink.

Everybody knows Asians aren’t considered disadvantaged minorities. Pay no mind to the Chinese exclusion act and the internment of Japanese Americans during ww2. Those weren’t evidence of real systemic racism that needs redress.

JJ has been making money off white guilt since before it was cool. It’s always been a pay us to go away and pay us more to go bother your competitor racket.

Worked witha former GSM at WLS-TV. The guy was ashedown artist from the get-go.

All you need to know is that even MLK didn’t trust him.

        • AlbertInTucson

          And REAL reverends.

          Like Al Sharpton.

          Oops.

          Bad example.

      • AlbertInTucson

I don’t believe he is in very good health, lately, or you’d be seeing & hearing from him incessantly.

      • SC Dave

Perhaps a conviction under RICO might do it?

Let’s all take a minute to remember how great a show Baywatch was, especially if you were 13 when the show was on TV.

Ah the early 90s, before one could freebase hardcore porn in any genre you desired without a click of the button. So innocent. So much left to the imagination. Many of those beauties didn’t age well, but it was a particular tragedy what happened to Yasmine Bleeth.

      • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

Kids have it so easy today. You know how hard it was to find asian midget clown porn back in the 90s. I honestly don’t know how I survived.

Yah, I feels ya. It’s okay, I make my own now. Thank God for phones!

    • AlbertInTucson

The genius programmers at NBC CANCELED the show after a season which then was a huge success in fist run syndication for only another dozen years.

Just trawling thru NFL records, other than the incredible gift that was Jim McMahon and his 25-game consecutive win-streak …. Sid Luckman had two that surprised me:

First 400 yard passing game: Sid Luckman, 433 passing yards, Chicago Bears vs. New York Giants; Nov 14, 1943

First 7 touchdown pass game: Sid Luckman, Chicago Bears vs. New York Giants; Nov 14, 1943

Monday Trivia: With another 184 passing yards he would have surpassed 80,000. He is the professional football all-time passing leader. Who is he??

    • AlbertInTucson

      Beats me.

    • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

By the way you worded the trivia, led me to believe it was someone who played in the CFL, so my first guess would be Warren Moon, which I am guessing is wrong. So it is some no name guy in the CFL.

“Last political tweet of 2018 (ha). The whole Democratic establishment is clamoring for a “message”. I voted for @Ocasio2018 because SHE HAD A CLEAR ONE. Listen up @DNC.” – Jeff

Yes she has a clear message. Although, I am not sure, no borders, free healthcare, free college, and free government job, all paid for by taxes on the “rich” is going to go over as well as you think outside a D+30 immigrant community.

I do find it refreshing she isn’t a lawyer and is probably the only Millennial female in the country that doesn’t know how to take a selfie.

defining how well anyway does in life based on which neighborhood they first grew up in sounded pretentious.

      • willbest

She grew up in a very well to do exburb 45 miles north of NYC, got her degree from Boston University, and has worked primary as a bartender, waitress, and campaign staffer since graduating.

The community I am talking about is the congressional district she won the DNC primary of, and will almost certainly win the general barring any killing kittens moment.

All of this is complete shiite comparing England vs. Croatia….considering all of Yugoslavia was destroyed by debatable interests by Clinton and NATO.
