      • AlbertInTucson

        I think it’s Atkins.

      • AlbertInTucson

        Looked it up.
        It can’t be O’Bradovich.
O’B was a rookie in 1962, the same year they first put the white “C” on the helmets.

    • SC Dave

Yes, the original HoF Bears MLB.

  • SC Dave

Looking at that picture makes me think how much equipment technology must have advanced – especially shoes.

Maybe they’ll make a great leap forward in helmets and then eliminate rules like the new lowering the head one.

    • John F

I read once that Payton wore the same helmet his whole career. The helmet was an old “suspension” helmet, not a modern one with all the foam rectangles. Apparently his family foundation had it up for sale at one time:

      https://www.memorabilia.expert/shop/chicago-bears-walter-payton-game-worn-helmet-game-used-during-his-entire-career-super-bowl-payton-family-foundation/

    • JAB

I wonder how much the helmet advancement has played a role in CTE. Players aren’t afraid to lead with their heads besides fines, since it doesn’t hurt like it should. Were there more body tackles way back when since the helmets didn’t provide much protection? That’s actually a question. I’m not old enough to have seen that kind of football.

      • SC Dave

Maybe before me, when they had no face guards.

    • Johnnywad

Unless they can figure out how to stop the brain from smashing into the inner surface of the skull due to sudden and rapid deceleration, they’re screwed.

Big picture, they’d be safer without helmets.

      • SC Dave

I doubt it. Easy study would be to compare them to rugby players. I’d bet the latter have more CTE.

        • Johnnywad

I’ll let you keep your money because I’m a gentleman and already know the answer. It’s the helmet that allows the players to use their heads for collision that causes the problem. It’s not JUST the concussions or big hits causing the real damage. It’s the thousands or even tens of thousands of subconcussive hits added up over time that do the real damage. Every time the head is abruptly stopped or changes direction by contacting another player with force, the brain, floating in it’s brain sauce, collides with the inside of the skull. Tau is released in response. The Tau protein collects over time, and kind of like plaque in our arteries, fucks up our brain in more ways than we even understand.

It’s never going away. It’s just a violent game with consequences.

How many stories have you read of Rugby players offing themselves or doing crazy shit like so many retired NFL players? I haven’t read any.

          • SC Dave

When have you seen a rugby player at all in the news?

          • Johnnywad

I bet you would if one blew his own head off proclaiming CTE as the cause.

  • SC Dave

Ran across this somehow (its four years old), and thought it was interesting. Well, sort of anyway.

  • Malice Halice

Most bars got kitchens or am I tripping? Is that a priority to u guys or do you eat and drink at separate locations? Maybe I’m not responsible enough to eat at home yet. Optional-Mid-years resolution

    • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

The bar I owned did not have a kitchen. The closest thing to a kitchen at most of the bars I go to is a crappy little pizza oven, that smells like decades old burnt cheese when it is running, and a microwave.

      • Malice Halice

That’s EXACTLY what they serve here my man! I’m being a good patron for what it’s worth but it’s been awhile for us. The pizza is kinda decent to be a thin crust

        • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

You know it is a good place if they have a jar of pickled eggs sitting on the bar.

    • Sactowns#1

Unfortunately, in portland every bar is required to serve “four substantial food items”. It’s idiotic

      • SC Dave

You’re in Portland. What did you expect?

        • Sactowns#1

They actually have a bunch of old, conservative laws on the books. This one came post prohibition in some puritanical effort to keep people sober. Their argument is, if people buy food when they go out drinking then they wont get drunk. It’s laughable.

  • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

    Bellamy is the GREATEST EVER!!!

  • ButtonShoes

A turnover by a Bears QB. Now there’s a familiar feeling.

    • JAB

Truth. Hitting his own guy in the helmet is brutal.

  • Malice Halice

That’s what u call blue balls! Thought we was gone get some but nope!

  • BuddhaJoe

Not sure i’ve ever seen a qb nail his own guy in the head like that.

  • ButtonShoes

Lots of sloppy play. All to be expected.

  • JAB

Hopefully they don’t keep calling the helmet to helmet plays like they just did. It went for the bears, but that’s a bad call.

    • SC Dave

There is a lot of work to figure it out.

  • Scharfinator

13 should catch balls. Cunningham looks like he’s still a good #3 RB

    • SC Dave

      Bennie is a keeper.

  • Sactowns#1

Couple clear holds so far but the flags are staying in the pockets today.

  • Irish Sweetness

    Scrubs for the whole game??

    How did Chase look?

    • ButtonShoes

      Like a backup QB.

      • Irish Sweetness

        Bad?

        • ButtonShoes

He turned the ball over by throwing the ball at his own guy’s helmet.

          • Irish Sweetness

And just threw another one …

          • ButtonShoes

            He does that.

  • Malice Halice

Chase makin us look BAD! He’s supposed to be da guy that knows the offense but he’s fuckin up. I’ve seen 2 passes get jumped to no avail but the 3rd got caught.

    • Irish Sweetness

We get to see Biscuit today?

      • Malice Halice

At this point yea, might as well give him live action. But his health is my biggest concern. No need for desperate LB n DL to touch him. I wanna see white n Miller of all

  • ButtonShoes

God. What I’d give to see a starter do something…anything…at this point.

  • JAB

Chase Daniels better be a great teacher to Mitch Trubisky because he can’t throw for shit.

    • ButtonShoes

I don’t want Chase Daniel teaching Mitch anything. Mitch should be watching and saying to himself “this is everything I shouldn’t be doing.”

      • Malice Halice

I SWEAR TO GOD! Chase proving y he Qb2

      • JAB

I’d agree with that. Sad thing is he was brought in because he knows the offense and could help Trubisky. The passes he’s had intercepted were all on him and very ugly.

  • Malice Halice

So we still throwing screens on 3rd down?!

  • Irish Sweetness

    1. Confirmation that Lac’s Canton bust will be bald. I can sleep now.

    2. Collinsworth likes Roquan better than anyone in the draft?

    • SC Dave

      2. Is bad news, because Collinsworth is a fucking idiot.

  • Malice Halice

Man where the fuck is Kyle

    • That Guy

Stretching and strengthening that ankle and shoulder. No way should he see the field this preseason.

  • That Guy

I didn’t think it was possible for anyone to have stonier hands than Bellamy, but… meet Bennie Fowler.

  • That Guy

Bad news: Kylie Fitts jumps offsides.
Good news: He didn’t injure himself on the play.

  • That Guy

Several of these Bears 2nd-teamers look (rightly) like men among boys. LeBlanc, Bullard, Irving, Cunningham, even Bush, all look much better than Baltimore’s 2nd-teamers.

  • Sactowns#1

Wow Chase Daniel looks bad. Who’s our 3rd stringer?

    • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

      Tyler Bray

  • ButtonShoes

    Fitts looks horrible out there.

    • Johnnywad

I don’t like his first name either.

  • Malice Halice

All I can say is “it’s just preseason”. I’m prayin we atleast finish a game away from being 3rd in da division. What happened to us?!

    • ButtonShoes

It’s pre-season and none of these guys are starters. This is nothing to freak out about. They weren’t going to be anything but bad.

    • Irish Sweetness

Are we really calling this The Bears? They’re scrubs.

    • That Guy

      Woah. Chill.

The guys playing now will never see the field except on STs or in emergencies. That Ayers kid is a camp body, likely gone in first cuts.

  • BuddhaJoe

Did White or Miller play at all? Didn’t see them out there.

  • SC Dave

Textbook lower the head penalty vs. Gentry, who I’m sure is in concussion protocol

  • AlbertInTucson

Looks like I made the right choice and let the wife take me to dinner.

    • That Guy

Looks like you picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue!

      • AlbertInTucson

Maybe YOU should stop sniffing it.

    • ButtonShoes

On the one hand, it’s actual football. So that’s good. But it’s pre-preseason football. So that’s bad.

      • That Guy

It’s frozen yogurt, so that’s good. It has potassium benzoate in it.

  • JAB

This stupid helmet rule is going to ruin football.

    • EnderWiggin

Orr’s head was up. Perfect form the whole way through contact.

      • SC Dave

That play will be the example to use for the refs when the league says “here is the shit to NOT call”.

It’s all expected. The real key is will they get it right.

    • That Guy

No, CTE is going to ruin football. The helmet rule is a desperate ploy to avoid CTE.

      • Russian Hacked Pacebot 2.0

By CTE you mean future lawsuits tight?

        • That Guy

You think Seau, Duerson, et al, is the end of it?
You think those guys represent a small and stable percentage of ex-players?
What was it, something like 95% of NFL player brains examined showed CTE?

Over the next decade, we’re going to see a lot of guys with serious CTE, degenerating, suiciding, homiciding. The NFL can’t hide from it anymore. All this crap to reduce head contact is just flailing around, looking like they’re trying to address the problem. But the problem hasn’t peaked yet. Maybe they’re doing all this crap for liability, but in the end, they’re going to have to figure out how to take the head contact out of the game.

          • Russian Hacked Pacebot 2.0

That is incorrect. It’s football, you can never take the head out of the game. It’s just a dangerous game.

          • JAB

Not going to happen. If all these penalties are called during the regular season, football will eventually be dead. People don’t want to watch yellow flags thrown all game.

          • Johnnywad

Why do you suggest it hasn’t peaked yet? I’d guess the physical presentation of it is probably at a plateau now. Additionally, youth and high school football enrollment numbers are falling every year.

So while it may be more sensationalized in the near term, I doubt the actual number of ex players suffering from symptoms is going to change dramatically.

      • willbest

Fdt = mdv, you want to reduce injury to the heads you reduce the weight of the players, the speed they are traveling, and/or the time it takes them to go from fast to stopped

  • That Guy

Oh, Collinsworth. Because the rookie is 25 — because he played baseball before switching to football — he is somehow smarter & more experienced and knew where the seam in the coverage was?

    Fucking. Idiot.

  • AlbertInTucson

    “Chase Daniel”.

    It’s not a name, it’s a strong suggestion.

    • AlbertInTucson

      Like “Skip Bayless”.

      • That Guy

        Or “Colin Cowherd”

  • Irish Sweetness

He’s a fudger, but Jerry Kramer showed T.O. the way. Gets in the Hall at the 49th try?

“If I got in, great, if I didn’t get in, great. I wasn’t going to let it ruin my life.”

  • That Guy

Seeing ads for Equalizer 2, I didn’t even realize there was an Equalizer 1.

    • BenderMcLugh

1 was good, Denzel’s character was totally different than the original of course, but it was good. looking forward to 2

  • Pretty Boy Assassin

Last time I saw so many balls hit guys in the hands and end up on the ground was last year.

    • ButtonShoes

And the year before. And the year before.

      • Pretty Boy Assassin

But at least our oline can’t block.

  • Joecashflow

Don’t know most of these guys but….im….bear….ass….ing.

  • BuddhaJoe

Only his first NFL experience but Lamar Jackson is clearly the best QB to take the field tonight IMO.

    • Johnnywad

Shit. I hope so given his draft status.

  • SC Dave
    • BuddhaJoe

Just beat me to it. Plus this shit is gonna make the game unwatchable.

      • SC Dave

Those leeches (CAA) have as their sole intent to make the Bears look bad so they can grub some extra money they don’t fucking deserve

        • BuddhaJoe

Sorry I misunderstood you first post and I completely disagree. The way the refs handled that helmet rule tonight was a fucking travesty. Roquan would have to be a complete moron to give into the Bears’ demands if that’s how they’re going to call it.

          • SC Dave

Did you read the article? The Bears long ago conceded the point about withholding anything that happened during games because of the helmet rule.

But that’s not enough for CAA.

They want Roquan’s money guaranteed against ALL instances of suspension.

So Roq murders a cop, goes to jail, and never plays a single down for the Chicago Bears. No problem, the checks are guaranteed and CAA gets their 10%. Roq gets the rest.

            The losers?

The franchise and moreso the fans.

          • BuddhaJoe

Shit my bad, I had read that before and forgotten. You’re right. I’ve been drinking (surprise, surprise).

          • SC Dave

All good. Been there, done that.

I’m just tired of people jumping the teams’ ass over the false premise that ‘the man’ is trying to stick it to the poor defenseless young multi-millionaire.

          • willbest

NFL agent fees are 3%. They take 10-20% on the endorsement deals they secure their clients though.

The difference between their cut if he murders somebody and plays out his contract is only going to be $100k, but that isn’t what they are after. They are after the cred of being tough on the NFL which gets them more players signing up. And with volume that little provision makes them millions.

That is the problem with small commissions. The person you hire often times isn’t aligned with your interests.

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

That is not how I read that at all. Seems to me he wants to guaranteed against all suspensions that happen during a game.

“protecting the player from discipline for behavior outside the realm of a football play”

I read this to mean anything that may occur after a play is over but still during a game, and not for off field issues. For instance, late hits out of bounds, fights on the field, bumping a ref. Basically if he decides to go all ‘Vontaze Burfict’ on the field he wants to make sure his money is safe.

          • AlbertInTucson

Ex ref, Terry MacCauley said after the game that the zebras have probably been told to call ‘em in bunches in preseason, then they’ll review the calls and give the officials a more clearly defined standard for the call.

  • Pretty Boy Assassin

    I like Wims

  • Irish Sweetness

    Chase is 6’0?? Fuck that.

    • Johnnywad

We’re hoping with all our might that Trubisky is good. Beyond him is irrelevant. We don’t have a real backup. We have a guy brought in to help teach the offense, and some other dude. If Trubisky sucks or gets hurt, we’re fucked.

      • Irish Sweetness

Bray looked sharp on that Gentry TD.

        • Johnnywad

I’m traveling tonight. I listened to the first half on the radio before I threw in the towel. Most all of these guys will be gone soon.

  • Sactowns#1
  • Irish Sweetness

Wims is 6’3 and 215. Prototypical receiver. 7th rounder? I like.

Only take positives from pre-season. I think Chase is an easy cut though.

    • Johnnywad

Chase isn’t going anywhere. He’s here for a reason. It isn’t to win football games himself, but it’s a reason.

  • ButtonShoes

Bears lose! Another familiar feeling. Ah well. The game’s not important. Everyone’s still healthy and that’s what matters.

    • Johnnywad

We’ll know more in a couple weeks. I am very interested to see how the offense clicks against 1’s.

    • Irish Sweetness

Well we got within an XP, he failed on the two I guess? Should have been a drawn game. Not that it matters.

    • AlbertInTucson

Yeah. A loss in this game is HUGE,

      (Sarcasm).
