My first interest will be in the S&C stuff. It’s been a chronic issue and fixing it is vital.

  • SC Dave

    “Seven years, that’s insanity”.

Hey Jeff, wouldn’t that make Adam a “Jahn-ny come lately”?

  • CanadaBear

Just read that Kyle had his shoulder surgery. I don’t think he’s getting surgery on his ankle, just rehab.

    • Dis Guy Trublinsky (Johnnywad)

Hopefully they don’t decide in July that he needed surgery and not just rehab. Wouldn’t be the first time.

      • CanadaBear

        Amen, brother!

      • SC Dave

Well, at least it would be by a different staff this time.

  • BearDown100393

“What sport has ever had the popularity of pro football? No sport ever in American history.”

    Baseball

  • KentuckyBearsFan

“This is how I would run XFL. Screw going after the NFL. Go after the high school kids, pay them for their two years between high school and pro football.”

This would screw with the college football monopoly which I would be happy about. Something like over 99% of college players don’t make a dime off playing football while the big schools rake in millions from boosters and TV networks. College degrees are 80-90% of a joke nowadays compared to a focused internship in most fields.

Get your GED at 16 and then get paid. I’m sure the parents will have concerns about their teenagers on the road with groupies, but how is that different from college anyways? Oh yeah, they’ll be getting paid and might be starting a career 4 years ahead of time. While decreasing the chances of needing to support them in the future.

Football is in the entertainment business. If teenage actors can get paid, why not teenage football players?

If the XFL ever gained traction using this model, a lot of players would just stay in the league for a few extra years decimating the expected freshman and sophomore rosters of college programs.

    • Dis Guy Trublinsky (Johnnywad)

No college student is forced to play football. They’re there because they want to be. If they choose not to acquire a valuable education while they’re there, that’s on them.

I can’t stand this debate. They are adults, consenting to the situation they’re in, happily so, and can leave whenever they want.

      • Bear Instincts

Does the fact that college HC’s make millions while players get nothing mean anything?

        • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

As taxpayers I think we should all have a problem with HC’s making millions. For instance the Highest Paid State Employee in Illinois is LOVIE SMITH.

          • Dis Guy Trublinsky (Johnnywad)

Many coaches are paid directly through the boosters or private donors.

          • leftcoastdave

Yea, but he is worth more to the state than anyone else in the public “education” system of teachers union sub-par performance schools.

          • willbest

I sort of take issue with that. The state of Illinois provides the University of Illinois system with $583 million, on a budget of $4.3 billion or roughly 14%. A lot of money but it doesn’t even cover the difference between in-state and out of state residence in tuition costs. Which is why the UofI (and a lot of state schools) are moving away from instate students towards out of state and specifically out of country students who pay the full sticker price.

Lovie Smith is a state employee in name only.

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

If the entire UofI athletics program could stand on its own then Smith would be a state employee in name only. However the UofI program does not, part of tuition money and state money supports it.

        • Dis Guy Trublinsky (Johnnywad)

What should it mean? To me it means I should have tried harder to become a college coach.

And players get a chance at free or reduced college tuition. That’s worth more money than any 18 year old can make unless they go straight to trade school.

It’s currebtly about $28,000 a year, in state, for a kid to got to a public university and live on campus. Why is this viewed as nothing to an 18 year old? You know any 18 year olds making that doing something they love like playing football? I don’t.

Edit: Damn near all of those coaches came through the same system of playing on scholarship when they were college students. Hell, some of them were walk ons.

      • Fuck the NCAA

Fuck you. Any college ball player who couldn’t afford school without his scholarship is 100% being coerced into playing football.

THEN you have coaches (particularly at the big D-I schools) who hype and exaggerate the chances that a college prospect, after being in their program, will make big bank in the NFL. So kids–and these are 17 year-olds in many cases–commit to playing football in college despite the unrealistic chances of making $ in the NFL.

And just because someone’s legally an adult doesn’t absolve older, cleverer, entrenched powerful people from their part in convincing the still-teenaged kids (oh, excuse me, legal adults who aren’t old enough to drink alcohol legally) whose brains are literally still developing to bashing their brains for 4 years for nothing other than a free “education,” which in many (if not most) cases is crap, because the program forces them to be revenue-generating athletes first, and students if/when they have time.

        • Dis Guy Trublinsky (Johnnywad)

LOL. You totally changed my mind.

Or they could just opt out. Now we have to look out for all the “kids” that are being duped into free or reduced cost educations?

          The poor things.

          • BerwynBomber

Then let us do away with athletic scholarships. To me that is the linchpin to all the exploitation and corruption charges.

          • Dis Guy Trublinsky (Johnnywad)

I’m not sure that helps anything.

          • Not everyone has a nuclear family or stable adult looking out for the best interest of these kids.

            See it all the time.

If they did, they’re 4.0 students taking advanced classes and all sorts of clubs to get into prestigious universities based on academics.

Instead, everyone enables them to skate by on TDs.

Look at what happened to Tyson once his manager died. Jackals just preyed on him.

A lot of kids need that mentor type to guide them esp when they grew up in fucked up hoods.

        • Dis Guy Trublinsky (Johnnywad)

Additionally, how about the millions of other kids that also can’t afford a college education but suck at football? What do they deserve?

      • “No college student is forced to play football”

Here are the options for many of those coming out of HS.

        – Deal or steal
        – Work at McDs
        – Join the military
        – Go to community college (and start from bottom rungs)

        Or….

Get whisked away from projects and ghettos to a nice sprawling campus where pussy, beer and adulation is thrown at them with the promise that they could make the NFL and keep it going forever

Hmmmm, yes, not “forced” at all

‘Authority makes you do things at gunpoint. Power makes you do things they want on your own’

        • Dis Guy Trublinsky (Johnnywad)

Yes. That last option is definitely the worst of the ones you laid out of their only choices.

And I disagree. They have a choice. We all have choices.

          • Irish Sweetness

Wealthy people just have more choice ….

        • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

Millions of college students don’t even have the choice to play football or any other sport that gives them a scholarship. So don’t go acting like they don’t have a choice. People of every economic level find ways to go to college.

          • At face value, they seem to get a better deal than the rest of us. I would’ve killed for a free ride to USC (60K yr) or UCLA.

But there’s a difference between the common schmo going to a university and a “student athlete”

I had to work, do community service AND attend school knowing I had to kill it in the class (and somehow still find a way to fuck and drink)

Those student athletes (without a strong mentor/manager) don’t feel they HAVE to excel in academics. I mean, how many take some easy major like “communications” and just show up and gets Cs because ppl around them are saying they’re going to the NFL.

And even if they want to do well academically in a major that is relevant, where’s the time?

They’re training almost year long or going to practice during school.

Not saying it’s impossible – dudes like Watson can be athletes and make the Dean’s list, but it takes an almost monk like discipline (usually instilled by a great structure) to do so.

reminds me of when I was going to join the military and I asked the recruiter if I can get a degree “Sure. We have teachers on the Aircraft carrier”

Asked my military friends if getting a degree while being in the miliatry is feasable.

            “Yeah, right”

I guess it can be done, but most 17-18 yr olds are just normal dudes wanting to do stupid 18yr old shit. They’re not planning out or thinking about 401Ks.

I’m not gonna pity them or anything cuz they get the opportunity, but once they’re in the “student athlete” system, the machine tends to treat them like (free) products that spits most of them out with no real education or options if they don’t make it in the NFL.

Don’t know if you listened to the Billy Corgan interview, but he says the Music Industry treats young musicians that way.

Fills them with all these unrealistic expectations while simultaneously taking advantage of them, then just throws them away like garbage afterwards.

The Student Athlete should at least get SOME form of compensation besides a half assed communication degree.

            Just my opinion.

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

“And even if they want to do well academically in a major that is relevant, where’s the time?” Horseshit! It can be done. I don’t have any sympathy for student athletes. They are given the opportunity, it is up to them to make the most of it. Also student athletes are at the colleges all year round, so it is not like they have to take 15-20 hours of coursework each semester. They have to be willing to put in the work.

    • BearDown100393

You know the future is lost when Vince McMahon is regarded as a better option for football players over the NCAA.

      • KentuckyBearsFan

Not the face of the league I would want.

He should sell the XFL to an ownership group involving Tim Tebow.

        Tim can be player/coach/owner/commissioner.

(or at least one of those)

  • leftcoastdave

To get to 92 million in cap room, da Bears cut Glennon, Sitton, McPhee, Wheaton, Cooper, Freeman and Demps. That gives Pace many options to fill those positions while keeping Fuller, Amukamara, Christian Jones and Benny the Jet.

BTW Benny is the most underrated Bear on this board. Dude is great in pass blocking and releasing to screens where his YAC is great. His value in protecting Trub while also being a great weapon is undervalued.

    • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

Benny is no Forte. We should have never got rid of him!

      • Dis Guy Trublinsky (Johnnywad)

        Why did you do that?

        • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

Sometimes I just can’t help myself.

          • Dis Guy Trublinsky (Johnnywad)

            Son of a…….

      • leftcoastdave

Matt Forte is still being paid $4m/year. $9m of his contract was guaranteed.
I’d rather see that extra money spent on Edge or WR.
Benny the Jet is a great piece of the offense.

    • willbest

Why would you get rid of Sitton? Is he being overpaid, sure, but not by a whole lot and you aren’t particularly deep at the position when you consider Long’s health. If there is an FA Guard that is as good as Sitton that you can pay less money too then sure, but no cutting for cuttings sake. Talent on the field matters more than getting great contract value.

      • John F

Sitton costs $7.9mm if you don’t cut him. You could get two VERY serviceable guards for that kind of money. You HAVE to cut him……..

        • willbest

I don’t want serviceable, I want top 10. I want that line down in Dallas that made people say stupid shit like Dak looks like he is the next Russel.

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

Sitton is no longer top 10.

          • John F

And we have too many other holes to fill to overpay anybody.

          • SC Dave

Many of us do not agree.

          • But Bears aren’t up against the cap.

And do you really expect Pace to go bonkers in FA?

He had the chance last yr to extend Alshon and sign Bouye, but couldn’t do either.

We’ll have plenty of cap this season. Might as well use it on Sitton until we groom a guy who can def replace him.

It’s not like Pace is gonna use that extra cap for an impact FA.

It’ll just roll over to next yr.

          • leftcoastdave

Neither Alshon nor Bouye wanted to play for last years Bears. When you are rebuilding, players wanting to play for a contender sign cheaper for a contender. That is the simple and obvious documented fact with both players.
Now a core has been built. A top ten D is on the field. Want to join that? That is a much easier sell.
I agree that the most controversial cut would be Sitton who is a class act. But he had his troubles this year and is only getting older and Jordan Morgan was drafted and red shirted for good reason. He played Tackle and needs to build a better base in the weight room to play Guard. Remember the before and after RRH? Bulked up nicely and now learning on the field. Jordan Morgan will have the best coach in the game along with his experience and good feet from playing T in college.
There will be plenty of money to spend this year as well as many developing youngsters who will be on the roster. I do not think that Pace will necessarily spend big on a WR, but younger quality linemen is likely to be a different matter as well as anywhere on D which will show more returns in an existing system than a new offensive system.

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

I would hesitate before you say Bouye signed a cheaper deal to play for the Jags.
            1. we don’t know what the Bears offered.
            2. At current tax rates in Illinois, it would cost Bouye and his current contract over $3.3 million over 5 years of the contract if he signed the same deal with the Bears.

While technically the Bears could have offered a larger contract, the take home pay could have been more in Florida, a state with no State Income Tax.

          • leftcoastdave

Pace needs to sign (or tag) Fuller, Meridith, Benny the Jet, Unrein, Christian Jones, Acho, Bellamy, Timu, Daniel Brown, and possibly Wright, Inman and a few others. I think he lets many of the “others” go and pays up for quality improvement in the O line (who does not want to play for HH?) and another TE receiving target as well as five or six guys sprinkled across the D.
The money is there. Time to spend it.

          • willbest

The question is more of why? Has he aged out? Or was it due to a shuffling line, inconsistent Center play out of Cody to start followed by Grasu having to play center on occasion?

      • leftcoastdave

I believe Harry will be able to get equivalent production out of Morgan or Kush while possibly adding a better, younger upside talent in FA as well as the draft. Obviously that is for Pace and his coaches to figure out, but I believe that $8m is likely to be better spent improving the O line with the big focus on RT.

    • Sactowns#1

My guess, Sitton, McPhee and Cooper all come back.

    • That assumes Pace is willing and able to sign premium FAs as opposed to his usual 99cent 3-1 specials.

To date, he has not shown the proclivity or competence to do either.

If he cuts all those guys, he’ll just thin out the roster for more Wheatons and Sims.

I do like Benny though. I loved that signing last off-season. I expected more from him as KR, but he was dinged up early in the yr, and got Foxed until like the last two games when they finally figured out screens can counter blitzes.

      • SC Dave

Cunningham is a keeper. We’re actually in really good shape at RB in my opinion.

Yes, we’d like another banger to spell Howard. I’m thinking Burton is probably gone, but one never knows. In Emily’s article on the Pats, she rightly pointed out that the real brilliance of Belichik is that he adapts the system to the strengths of the players he has.

Wouldn’t it be awesome if Nagy, et al, figure that out?

  • CanadaBear

Any time you’re listening to Vince McMahon and you find yourself agreeing with him, you’d better think again. He’s already done this once and failed spectacularly. He will do the same again. Players have to stand for the anthem but there will be no politics? Hmmm. That doesn’t make sense. Nobody with a DUI on their record can be in the league? I’m guessing the legal system might not agree. Pro football is taking on water and I just can’t see this as anything but pandering. Hope he loses his ass. AGAIN.

    • UCF Bears Fan

My favorite part is him saying no criminals in the league. Even if they have a DUI they will not be allowed in the XFL.

How about the same requirements for the WWE then? Every wrestler in the WWE is a ‘saint’?

      • CanadaBear

I’m guessing there might be one or two rasslers juicing it! Or maybe almost all of them! Along with the steroid use there is usually a pattern of violent behavior. Usually leads to an embarrassing arrest or two at the very least.

      • No criminals? There goes the talent.

I remember watching a doc on British special forces.

A lot of them were borderline criminals before joining or grew up in very rough neighborhoods where violence was the norm.

Those tended to make the best special force soldiers.

        1. Give them something to believe in. Something they never had.
        2. Provide structure, order and family they never had
        3. Violence wasn’t foreign and even invited and promoted.

I imagine football appeals to the same type for similar reasons.

As M refrains in Bond “Orphans always make the best agents”

    • willbest

Its not politics if its just “the way”. High character standards is probably much easier to enforce in a league like the XFL. Anybody with genuine skill will be in the NFL, this means your competitive talent pool will be much broader. This is evidenced even in the NFL. If the 49th player ends up in a bar brawl he is toast because they can find another 1500-2000th best football player to take his place. You are Big Ben or Ray Lewis or AP level talent, well then people start looking at reasons to keep you around.

    • Sactowns#1

Those dog whistles are super subtle. Gotta be a real genius to figure out exactly who he’s trying to pander to.

      • willbest

His daughter runs the SBA, I don’t think he really needs to pander to him.

And I will continue to point this out because it drives me nuts when people use that phrase. Only dogs can hear the whistles, so if you heard the whistle, you are the dog.

        • Sactowns#1

Ah yes. The ol “only racists point out racism” argument. The mobius strip of logic. The guy is obviously trying to attract the good ol boys who dont want none of that uppity stuff in this here football. Have fun losing money and roiding.

          • willbest

If I thought you were a racist, I wouldn’t have called you out on absurdity of using the analogy. I would have just accepted your authority on racist behavior.

Since the analogy leaves no way for a non-racist to decode it without observing the responses of the dogs using it’s use is illogical by anybody but a non-racist. Which I thought included you.

          • Sactowns#1

So your issue was with the term and not the content of my assessment. Understood, good sir.

  • SC Dave

Best reverend rant in a while.

    • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

Agreed, I think he has lost a step. We should cut him.

      • willbest

        Someone is salty today.

  • Dis Guy Trublinsky (Johnnywad)

ESPN just compared Brady playing with stitches and a bandage on his hand last week to Jordan’s flu game. What a fucking joke.

    • Sactowns#1

Yeah. Brady obviously doesn’t take steroids.

      • SC Dave

“doesn’t obviously” you mean. Word order matters.

Unless, of course, I missed the sarcasm font.

    • CanadaBear

If Jordan and the Bulls were in their prime now, the amount of praise would be unreal. Every year it seems the sports media has to “out do” the previous year with either praise or tearing something down. Everything has to be the extreme, either best or worst. Even Hoodie was making fun of the media about it.

      • SC Dave

        It’s the Twitter age.

  • BerwynBomber

“DBearsBlog @dabearsblog This is how I would run XFL. Screw going after the NFL. Go after the high school kids, pay them for their two years between high school and pro football.”

Love the idea but wonder if the NFL would institute a rule (or fight it in court) to bar the XFL kids from being eligible for the draft.

Also agree with you about minor league teams. But same issue there too. Both the NFL and big-time college football don’t want to give up their golden goose of college development.

    • SC Dave

If you had a free farm system that pays coaches far more money than any NFL developmental league could pay them, would you want to give it up?

It’s probably all moot anyway. CTE will ultimately thin the ranks of college football.

      • BerwynBomber

Yes and no, to your question.

I agree with Jeff that an NFL minor league system would definitely draw ratings/make big time money.

The majority of us would tune into to watch Bears minor league ball just to see who would make the jump to Soldier the next year.

But I get your point about coach’s pay.

        • SC Dave

Fair enough, BB. As I recall, some of the minor league hockey teams are a good draw, and there is good reason to suspect football would do better still.

        • I wonder how NFL Europe would do if it restarted?

Maybe the XFL can follow that model plus some changes and innovations to appease fans.

          • KentuckyBearsFan

“NFL Europe” sucks as a name. Change it to EuroFL.

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

NFL would be better to start a minor league in the States in cities like San Antonio, St. Louis, Omaha, etc. instead of NFL Europe. Besides England, I think Germany was the only country that somewhat supported NFLE.

          • SC Dave

Far too many stoppages of play for it to be interesting to Euros.

    • willbest

The NFL gets away with violating the technical antitrust laws because its not violating the spirit of them. If they barred XFL players from the NFL they would be in violation of the spirit as well as the technical aspects of it.

Allowing 17-21 year olds to play, wouldn’t necessarily be a threat to the NFL any more than the arena league is now. The NFL is still going to have the money to attract the best players, and they won’t care where they come from.

The biggest threat the XFL could provide is if they can figure out what a catch and a hold are, but McMahon doesn’t seem inclined to beat the NFL in terms of quality on field product.

      • BerwynBomber

Nah. Grouse all you want about improved officiating but even if the XFL improves it you will still be left with inferior talent that won’t interest you as much as the NFL. At least that will be the case for the majority of viewers. It is a big reason why college can’t compete with the pros.
Plus, I am betting McMahon will have the XFL’s regular season occur in months that don’t compete against the NFL (or college football).
I tend to think a huge mistake in most of these start-up, alternative leagues is that play during seasons not associated with their sport.

        • Dis Guy Trublinsky (Johnnywad)

This thing has “Flop” written all over it.

        • The NCAA fields “inferior talent” and they’re still successful.

It’s not necessarily about talent but product.

If you put Tyson against some TJ Bum, that won’t be much of a product.

But if you put two TJ Bums in the ring, hey, now you got yourself some entertainment.

Maybe the XFL players won’t make ODB type catches (then again, maybe they do), but if it provides a solid 2 hours of pre-Goodell football without hours of commercials and horrible officiating, I would def sacrifice some acrobatics for that.

McMahon is smart in essentially doing a 2-yr survey on what fans really want.

He also said he’s dropping the gimmicks. If he basically corrects and streamlines the game the way the NFL is too incompetent or greedy to, the XFL can work.

Esp if it hops on the streaming bandwagon while the NFL is still forcing TNF on NFLN and MNF on ESPN.

  • Scharfinator

Good podcast. Anyway we can get little markers where the conversations change? IE 2:30 Nagy hire 5:50 McDaniels etc.

A similar measure has either passed in NY or is working its way through their legislature so there does seem to be a preference cascade in that regards.

I won’t allow my kids to do it, though I am still in a bit of a minority even in my lower upper class neighborhood. I do require a team sport so that they can learn the basics of a cooperative-competitive environment. They all chose soccer despite me gently suggesting baseball.

        • Yeah, my nephews play flag football.
Interesting they chose soccer over baseball.
Maybe FIFA on PS4s is finally winning kids over

If they’re good at basketball, they might be good at soccer. Requires a of the same speed, acceleration, agility, stamina , foot-eye-coordination.

Crazy. Growing up mostly “those guys” played soccer. I imagine it’s different now.

          • SC Dave

Soccer is much better for fitness than baseball.

          • Irish Sweetness

They’re finding now that players who played with the old balls gave themselves CTE heading the ball. When the old balls got wet and cold they got really heavy. Brutal.

      • Irish Sweetness

        It makes you look cool?

  • Fun podcast, but I cannot let this go

SWEATY TEDDY MUST BE FIRED. TODAY.

You can’t defend cleaning house in the medical dept AND argue Phillips helps the team.

    It’s contradictory.

You get rid of both on the same principle:

Whatever they were doing wasn’t working. Period. End of story.

The fact that he had ANYTHING to do with the new hires does NOT assure me. In fact, quite the opposite. It dampens my excitement. It’s like Mush betting on the same horse you bet on. Might as well just tear up your ticket before the race even finishes.

Phillips is MUSH. Fucking ass cancer. Cut him out.

He has connections, you retort? Guess what, anyone embedded like a tick in any profession will network if he’s not a complete clown or jerk.

When I used to work at a hospital, this one secretary worked there forever. Like 40 yrs or something.

Everybody loved her. She probably knew everyone in that hospital, from janitors to the surgeons and president.

She was a good secretary. Dedicated. But she didn’t know shit about surgery.

No one was gonna ask her, “Hey, which surgeon should we hire?”

How the fuck would she know? Just because she’s been around them for decades, doesn’t mean she knows shit about about who would make a great surgeon.

That’s what Phillips is. A glorified clerk.

Knows about football about as much as that secretory knew about reproductive endocrinology.

So WHY WHY still keep employing one of the few constants through all the shitty years? WHY?

We just terminated a bunch of medical staff because their results sucked. Why doesn’t this apply to Teddy? How is he somehow immune to fucking logic and responsibility? Is he some sorta wizard or something?

This is also the same desk jockey who admitted wins don’t factor.

    I don’t get it.

Why can’t we replace him with someone who actually KNOWS about football?

    Why?

He’s like herpes, death or taxes. Just yr after yr the one constant at Halas. “Insanity is trying the same thing over and over again expecting different results”

Just demote him to accountant or president of book keeping or something.

Hire a president who actually knows something about football – how novel!

    Moses Christ.

    End. Rant.

    • BearDown100393

      Ted Phillips is NFL Cancer.

    • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

      Hooray for Teddy!!!

    • leftcoastdave

Maybe because Pace and the rest of the staff now show that his OJT is over and he might have learned something along the way?
Who knows? We shall see what happens in FA where he may have an impact, or not.

      • SC Dave

He has been President of the Bears since 1999.

During his tenure, the Bears overall record is 142-161. In 19 seasons, they have:

o 4 division titles, one conference title
        o 3-4 playoff record.
o Finished last in their division eight times.

A rather expensive training program, don’t you think?

Butch’s analogy is right on the money. Let Teddy run the financials (at which he seems to be quite competent) and get a FOOTBALL guy to run the rest.

        • leftcoastdave

Yep. But all buried cost going forward.
          Can’t change the past.

    • CanadaBear

My question is, why keep ranting about it? If Pace is the goods, who gives a shit about Phillips? And if Pace gets replaced, it will be consultant time again.

    • ButtonShoes

Of course Ted needs to go. He needed to go years ago. But remember, he’s just a symptom. The disease is ownership. They’re the only reason he’s still employed at Halas Hall.

      • BearDown100393

Some idiots here will defend the McCaskeys/Phillips to the bitter end. It is a reason why nothing ever really changes.

        • ButtonShoes

Exactly! A culture of failure starts at the top and that’s ownership. I don’t care how well-intentioned the McCaskeys are. Their results say otherwise. This is a family that has no idea how to run a football team.

    • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

Interesting analogy about the secretary. However hospitals are not run by secretaries. They are run by administrators and ‘numbers’ people. Usually people that are good at a variety of aspects of running a hospital like Public Relations, fundraising, legal procedures, budgets, general business practices, and a bunch of shit you don’t want a surgeon to be making decisions on. These administrators can be very unpopular when viewed from the outside, because they have to make decisions that actually affect life and death of people. And when it comes to hiring the Head Surgeon they are involved only for the business aspect, because mainly they don’t know jack about surgery.

      • “And when it comes to hiring the Head Surgeon they are involved only for
the business aspect, because mainly they don’t know jack about surgery”

That was sort of my point. I didn’t know the highest administrator ( I knew some) but it’s the same idea.

Wouldn’t ask them which doctors would make great surgeons or researchers, that’s what other doctors who know the profession are for.

Like my direct boss who was a world renown researcher and professor. He was the one choosing who was worthy, not the administrator (outside of the non-medical stuff like you mentioned).

That’s the type of guy you need leading your operation.

Not a glorified clerk whose tenure would be judged a failure by any metric.

My personal theory is that McCaskeys on top of knowing little about football also know little about business, so they keep him around out of fear of losing $.

I can understand that from a business perspective. Obviously, as a fan though, I can’t get behind that cuck logic.

They’re also being shortsighted, not thinking about the MILLIONS they’re losing by fielding a sucky-ass team.

If the Bars were consistently competitive, they’d be making way more than now, just in season ticket prices alone.

        • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

Then what are you really bitching about. They hired a consultant who knows football, like A LOT of teams do, to find the Football guy Pace. Pace then hired Nagy. Then Nagy hired his own staff. Yet you bitch if you hear that Teddy picked up the phone or sat in on a couple interviews???

          • BearDown100393

            Pace didn’t really hire Nagy.

      • Irish Sweetness

Hospitals are run by Nurses, too. It depends on what facet of the hospital you’re looking at. You can have a hospital without a paper-pusher, but not without nurses.

    • Irish Sweetness

For all the media hoopla about this year’s QB draft class, last year’s might be better at the top.

    https://chicago.suntimes.com/sports/early-struggles-from-18-qb-class-helps-justify-bears-trade-for-mitch-trubisky/

    • Dis Guy Trublinsky (Johnnywad)

For my part, the concept of grading a class of anything is silly until they’ve played (or coached) a few seasons in the NFL.

      • CanadaBear

That’s why I’m always amazed by people who love the draft. They get so convinced the guys they like are gonna be stars they just assume they are going to come into the NFL and kick ass. I’m just hoping a couple more QB’s start flying up the ratings and help the Beloved get a shot at the guy they want or trade out of the spot.

        • Dis Guy Trublinsky (Johnnywad)

Yeah. Judging from the article you linked, sounds like that’s a fairly likely scenario.

Pace may have unknowingly lucked into a very good position in this year’s draft by picking up Trub last year. Unless he’s an evil genius and slow played the whole thing……..

          • leftcoastdave

What is not simply rational about getting your guy asap to develop him into a player? We clearly saw the need to be “learned up” to the position this year just as we saw the year before with the QB’s drafted. And the whole trade down thing is perennially what I hope to see.

      • It’s not about guarantees but probabilities. Grades are simply parameters.

The draft is a lot like FF.

For instance, if you have a choice between Brady and Alex Smith, you’re likely drafting Brady 10/10 times in RD 1-2 over Alex Smith.

In our league, Brady went for $38. Alex Smith for $2.

Alex Smith ended up being the #1QB in FF.

But was drafting Brady over Alex Smith stupid? No. It’s valid.

You can’t rely on outliers to build your team in FF or the NFL.

You get your board and trust your eyes. In the long run, playing the odds or consensus builds a good team. Finding gems builds great teams.

That’s why I don’t blame Pace for taking White. Not only was he a top 1-2 WR in that draft, but his tape, character, and measurables were phenomenal. No one knew about the leg and he hadn’t been INJ prone.

White was graded highly. Pace COULD have drafted Nelson Agholor who went #20.

        (Or Diggs in the 5th).

But he would’ve been deemed crazy to draft Agholor that high.

Likewise, if Trub or Watson would’ve entered this draft, they’re like the 3-rd-4rth best QB.

        Does that guarantee anything? No.

But it’s usually smart to go by grades cuz more often than not you end up with Sheas when you don’t.

        • Dis Guy Trublinsky (Johnnywad)

Yeah. No guarantees anywhere in this racket.

I think my point is getting lost here. Those guys may all pan out to be great. Or perhaps, none of them will. If I had to guess, I’d say one of the four ends up being a true, long term quality starter in the NFL.

But that’s the thing. You only need one. So whether it’s a deep “class” or a shallow one, shouldn’t impact your decision when you’re finally near the top of the draft board. They’re all separate trials. And the relative strength or weakness of the class, ins not relevant to any one team in my book.

Same with coaches. If you identify your guy, go out and hire him first, (like Pace did) and come home happy with the selection, the depth of the so called class is meaningless.

Now as for Trubisky, to say he’d be the fourth best QB is really unknowable. What would he have looked like this past fall in his second full year as a college starter? I bet he’d have torn it up and the draft buzz would have been insane.

Take Baker Mayfield. I didn’t even really know who he was until about October. I’m no college ball guru, but I generally know who’s who amongst the best players in the game.

Bottom line, time will tell all. And I think the Bears lucked into a great situation here just the way things are shaking out. They may have their pick of a few true studs with a run on QBs ahead of them.

        • Irish Sweetness

But it it valid to draft him there next year?
Smith was available on the waiver wire in 90% of the leagues I was in (24). You pick him up, Watson ….

    • good article, but Mayfield and Josh Allen aren’t the #1 or #2 QBs in this draft.

      Darnold and Rosen are.

So the fact that the 3rd and 4rth best QBs (and some prefer Rudolph over either) struggled a bit at their at senior practice is not all that surprising.

And teams do look ahead, and I’m sure the Texans concluded that there’s no way they’re losing enough games to land Darnold and Rosen in this draft, so they went with Watson last draft while he was in striking distance.

Pace likely used the same rational and went for Trub.

After all, no GM goes into the season expecting to lose all their games.

Might work out for everyone involved.

Could be that Watson, Mahomes, Trub, Darnold and Rosen are all good QBs.

      • CanadaBear

Everything I’m reading Darnold and Rosen have plenty of warts. Ya never know.

  • Slow day, but the article below made me think of Mayfield.

He’s an interesting prospect. On the one hand, he has experience, competitive fire, accuracy, leadership, etc

OTH, some say he’s immature (manziel-esque). He doesn’t have the strongest arm, and he’s only 6’1.

There’s some who say they wouldn’t even take him till the 3rd.

Then again, some critics said that about Watson too.

Gonna be interesting to see where he goes in the draft.
