Five Final Thoughts on the 2018 NFL Draft

| April 26th, 2018

This space will be updated with information and commentary regarding tonight’s first-round selection by the Chicago Bears just minutes after that selection is made. This will include opinion from two well-respected league guys.

(1) I asked a current NFL general manager what position he thinks is underrated in this draft. “Wide receiver,” he told me. “Don’t be surprised if once the seal gets broken on the position there’s a mini-run.” The belief is there’s no star wideout in this draft but there are at least a half dozen “70 catch guys” (his phrase) in the mix.

(2) Based on some criticism I’ve read, I went back and looked at a few Quenton Nelson games. I didn’t need to. He’s exceptional. But one thing stood out to me: Mike McGlinchey is going to be drafted earlier than many expect.

(3) I asked a former high-ranking NFL personnel man which player will influence the drama Thursday night most significantly. He didn’t even hesitate. It was Lamar Jackson. “I have friends who think he’s the best quarterback in this class. I have other friends who don’t think he has any chance to play quarterback in the league.”

(4) The Saquon Barkley love makes sense. But why does nobody bring up Penn State’s horrendous track record of sending running backs into the NFL. Blair Thomas. Ki-Jana Carter. Larry Johnson. Curtis Enis! All early first-rounders. At some point, it’s not coincidence. Is this a reason not to draft Barkley? No. But is it reason for pause? Absolutely.

(5) Asked both of the aforementioned personnel men what the Bears need? The GM stumbled around and gave me nothing. The other was dead-on. “They need defensive backs that make big plays when they get their hands on the football. And there will be several available when they pick. That’s where I expect Ryan to target and I KNOW that’s what Vic wants.”

Did anybody else notice ESPN experts’ game-by-game predictions for the season last week? Every one of them except Jeff Dickerson (7-9) predicted an 0-16 season for the Bear. Yep. Oh and 16.

    • Irish Sweetness

There should be a website for all the experts’ ‘predictions’. Somewhere they’re held accountable.

If there are any 40 year old virgins out there ….

      • catfish44

held accountable? what for? they are the same as people ranking teams during the season. both mean absolutely nothing.

    • Big Mike

      fools.

    • Frank Schoenburg

      Experts lol.

    • BerwynBomber

      Link please.

I find it hard to believe any analyst would predict an 0-16 season where there have only been a handful in the history of the league, and the Bears are generally thought to have improved personnel over a team which won five games the previous year.

      • leftcoastdave

I posted this one five days ago.

“ESPN had each of their NFL Nation reporters predict the regular season schedules for their respective teams.

The 13 writers that cover the 13 teams the Chicago Bears play this season all independently predicted their respective teams will beat the Bears in their games this year.”

        https://bearswire.usatoday.com/2018/04/20/bears-viewed-as-easy-win-in-nfl-record-predictions/

        • BerwynBomber

Meh. That’s a little different than predicting an 0-16 season. In fact the article says no one is predicting an 0-16 season directly.

Just sounds like homer beat reporters for their respective teams.

        • What it means is when other fans are looking at their schedules, they see the Bears like we would see the Browns on our schedule.

          • leftcoastdave

It will be fun to disappoint them.

  • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

We are in the position to get the highest rated player at a number of positions depending on how many QBs go ahead of us. So there is one thing I do not want to say or hear tonight when our pick is announced. WHO?

    • Big Mike

Wasn’t that Emery’s thing, Every fuckin year. I hated that guy. Should be know “who” until round 3 if we get a pick back or rd 4. I’m feeling a trade back. I’m not that guy either. I believe in quality over quantity at the top of the draft. But Pace says and I agree that there are 8 guys on his non-QB board. Some report said he was signaling that he’d move back to 12 and one of his guys would still be there. I feel the same way about the 1a guys that are likely to be there. Unless Nelson (could be) or Chubb (no shot) are there.

      • leftcoastdave

I’m hoping that trade back happens. Gives him more powder to get other targeted players down the board while he still gets one of his eight.

        • Big Mike

If they drop back to 12, 4QBs go, there’s always a guy or two who climb into top 10 that you don’t project. I’d guess if the Bears are at 12 there are 2-3 guy from Pace’s list. Trading back 4 spots nets a 3rd round pick. I looked at the traditional chart (jimmy Johnson) and the new 2012 chart made after the CBA. In the first chart, trading back to 12 nets 200 pts. 3rd RD picks are valued from 100-265. Buffalo who sits at 12, owns the first pick of the 3rd round which is worth 265. So what you’d like is for Buffalo to overpay and make that deal straight up. But.. coincidentally, the Bears’ second 4th round pick is worth 64 pts. So you get an almost even value.

          https://www.drafttek.com/NFL-Trade-Value-Chart.asp?RequestTeam=Chi

Using the newer chart, trading back to 12 nets 59.29 pts. 3rd round ranges from 39.38 to 77.95. Bears would be short 18.66pts for Buffalo’s pick. There second 4th round pick is worth 25.82. A difference of 7.16. Using this chart, Buffalo’s 5th round pick (#166) would have approximate value 8.30. https://www.patspulpit.com/2017/4/23/15398184/2017-nfl-draft-creating-a-brand-new-nfl-draft-value-trade-chart

      • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

I don’t see a trade back in round 1. It will happen in round 2.

        • leftcoastdave

It always happened in round 2. Maybe this year Pace switches gears. Trade down in one, up in two?

        • Big Mike

Lots of theories. To get a mid third round pick the Bears would need to drop to the last 10 picks of the 2nd round. I think adding a 3rd round pick is Pace’s objective. I could see it going that way, but my hunch is he put that precise number of having 8 guys they really like in round 1 to signal he would happily move back to 12.

          So it should be fun!

          • SC Dave

Makes sense on the “8 guys” comment. Which assumes, of course, that 4 QBs are in the first 11 picks.

          • Big Mike

            Exactly.

          • Could package Howard to get higher pick though.

          • leftcoastdave

I was thinking the same thing. Or better, get the stud RB you want in the second or third and trade JH for more picks.
            (Dirty backstabbers.)

          • Big Mike

            You’re kidding right

          • I think Pace is more than open to throwing Howard in a package if it gets him his 3rd back.

          • Big Mike

            No no no

          • Big Mike

God they round be awful. Treating water. Need to stack assets

          • Irish Sweetness

You could ditch Howard if you were moving up for Barkley.

    • With the 8th overall pick, the Chicago Bears select…

      Isiah Wynn, center, Georgia…

      • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

We don’t need a center. We got Grasu.

  • Irish Sweetness

No alarms and no surprises, Mr. Pace. It would be nice if you could get our picks back.

  • That Guy

With the 8th pick in the 2018 draft, the Bears pick… Bley McClellin, younger brother of Shea. A high-motor tweener who was projected by many to be an undrafted FA, the Bears pounced when he was still available in the 1st round.

  • Big Mike

No fighting after the RD1 of the draft, or any other round. This is all about cheering for laundry. It’s great fun, great to be passionate about it. The draft especially. There are no winners or losers right after the draft. Great to forecast what the players we take might do. But it’s just a forecast.

Here’s what you want to watch. Even though it was a crappy year, (I hope it was a turning point) these highlights still get me jacked up.

    • SC Dave

They picked the right play to finish.

    • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

LOL! Not going to happen. Whatever happens is bound to piss someone off.

      • Big Mike

I can forecast who will be pissed no matter what. I think I have them blocked. Borderline trolls.

        • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

I will promise to try and not encourage them.

          • willbest

Where is the fun in that?

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

I really don’t foresee myself keeping that promise.

          • leftcoastdave

            PACE IS AN IDIOT!!!!

          • CanadaBear

That seemed a little dubious when you posted it!

      • willbest

I already hate the pick. 8.. I mean FFS, Pace. Get a better number. What a tool

      • It’s gonna be funny when Pace drafts Lamar Jackson at #8

  • Re: #4.

The last of those guys drafted was Larry Johnson in 2003. That’s 15 years (and several Penn State coaches) ago. The program in 2003 had little to do with the program now.

And FWIW, Larry Johnson had over 6000 rushing yards and 55 rushing TDs and averaged 4.4 yards per carry on his career. I’d hardly call him a bust.

    • DaBearsBlog

He got all of that in 2 seasons.

      • so what? He was great and then got hurt. By the same logic I guess Gale Sayers was a bust then, right? (less than 5k career yards, only hit 1k twice).

RBs have a short shelf life unless they’re very lucky. Johnson was damn good for a few years there.

And again, that was FIFTEEN years ago. The rest of those guys were all more than 20. I fail to see how that has anything to do with 2018.

    • pinkston

I had been thinking the same about Johnson. He may have only had two supreme seasons, but those were 1700 yard seasons. He was one of the best two or three RBs in the NFL for a brief time. Doesn’t belong in conversation with those other guys.

    • Yeah, I’m not a believer in “sins of the father…” like some believe that if a QB is from USC that automatically makes him a bust.

That’s not gonna stop Darnold from going #1 overall.

And by that logic, how many player from Ashland U are in the HOF?

  • Irish Sweetness

Don’t see the Broncos drafting a guard at 5. Nelson it is.

    • KentuckyBearsFan

they go with Nelson or a QB I think.

    • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

      Indy could easily draft him.

      • KentuckyBearsFan

yeah, but Luck won’t have the fun of having the living shit beat out of him every game.

      • willbest

Indy could easily draft a QB too. They can cut Luck with only $12 million in dead money after this season.

  • BerwynBomber

“DaBearsBlog @dabearsblog Derwin James is a throwback safety. But can he cover big tight ends and slot guys? I don’t see it. And I think that’s the modern NFL.”

Amos is making a career of it … thus far …

    • Also, SS RARELY must cover the slot, and typically doesn’t cover the TE unless they’re named Berry.

That’s usu the job reserved for FS (usu when a blitz is sent, which Fangio doesn’t do often).

That being said, James seems fast and fluid. “oily hips”?

  • willbest

The spam bots new way around disqus is quite annoying.

    • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

I have not seen it in awhile, how did they do it? Or am I talking to the spam bot…..

      • willbest

They respond to comments from months/years ago with links to lord knows what (I am not about to click on it).

I suspect Disqus, for the purposes of saving processing power, only bothers to actively scrub live threads rather than old stuff.

        • BenderMcLugh

are you shopping online at HotTopic.com again, Will? tsk-tsk

  • CanadaBear

If the guy Pace wants is there at 8, take the fucking guy!

  • BenderMcLugh

so Mayock is predicting Roquan Smith as the pick. So that won’t be the pick.

Here’s his last few years of predictions:
    2017
#3 Chicago Bears Marshon Lattimore, CB, Ohio State

    2016
#11 Chicago Bears Vernon Hargreaves, CB, Florida

    2015
#7 Chicago Bears Trae Waynes, CB/S, Michigan State

    2014
#14 Chicago Bears Calvin Pryor, S, Louisville

    2013
#20 Chicago Bears Manti Te’o, ILB, Notre Dame

    • willbest

In his defense Lattimore would have been a phenomenal pick, although Glennon would have been our QB for the entire year.

      • BenderMcLugh

        Lattimore over Trubs? no way

        • willbest

Lattimore the 3rd rounders from both years, and drafting around ~5 this year over Trubs.

          • With Fox and Glennon we’d be #2 overall

          • willbest

The point is, in an alternate universe, the Bears have DROY, 2 more day 2 draft picks, and a top QB prospect.

          • Oh I’m not debating since that was the Butch-Mb plan last offseason ( except w Hoyer to save us $10m and buy a good FA).

            See, last thread

          • leftcoastdave

Perhaps more D talent, but still trotting out a Rookie QB instead of someone ready to rumble.

          • BenderMcLugh

            nooooope.

          • leftcoastdave

Last year’s draft was a great setup for this year. Not merely getting the Biscuit the real time education of reading Ds, but getting Cohen the Joker and Shaheen who can prove to be both an in line TE and the move guy. (And Eddy Jackson? Just waiting on Morgan to start at guard.) But to the main point, exactly what was needed to implement Nagy’s O and keep Fangio in the fold.

          • CanadaBear

I’m not convinced Shaheen is the goods just yet. Still holding out hope. Hope he takes that big step.

          • BenderMcLugh

            same

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

            3 TDs on 12 receptions… Greatest ever!

    • BenderMcLugh

Kiper predicted Fuller & McShay predicted K White.

      Kiper
      2017
#3 Chicago Bears Solomon Thomas, DL, Stanford
      2016
#11 Chicago Bears Jaylon Smith, LB, Notre Dame
      2015
#7 Chicago Bears Brandon Scherff, OT, Iowa
      2014
#14 Chicago Bears Kyle Fuller, CB, Virginia Tech
      2013
#20 Chicago Bears Manti Te’o, ILB, Notre Dame

      McShay
      2017
#3 Chicago Bears Jamal Adams, S, LSU
      2016
#11 Chicago Bears Shaq Lawson, DE, Clemson
      2015
#7 Chicago Bears Kevin White, WR, West Virginia
      2014
#14 Chicago Bears Calvin Pryor, S, Louisville
      2013
#20 Chicago Bears Alec Ogletree, lB, Georgia

      • Do you (or anyone) know Kiper’s final mock draft this yr? Dunno if you’re an “Insider” or not.

        • BenderMcLugh

nope, don’t pay for that. I did just click that link though and he changed the #1 to Baker, which means they’ll go Saquon.

Edit: even if you don’t pay for insider, the link shows the first two or three picks.

        • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

If it goes by what ESPN shows on TV then Kiper says Nelson. McShay says Roquan Smith

          • I’ll check it out. DIdn’t want to turn on ESPN this early because watching that station has become like putting a jack hammer to my head.

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

It’s been the same draft show all week. I caught it several times on TV at the bar at least it was muted.

  • Irish Sweetness
    • CanadaBear

      Twitter, SMH.

      • willbest

I have been preaching to my kids the dangers of the internet since they were born. I am quite frankly shocked at the cavalierness my contemporaries in the parenting world treat technology. At the same time, I am miffed about how I have parents still texting me for play dates for my 9 year old when they are 5 blocks away.

None of these kids could relate to The Sandlot the way I did.

        • evantonio

What’s wrong with texting for a playdate?

          • willbest

Because a 9 year old can be trusted to move around a low traffic residential neighborhood, conduct his own affairs and be back by dinner time.

          • John F

But there are child abductions, school shootings, terrorist attacks, and all around general mayhem in every city every single day. I know because I see it on TV and on the internet.

          • evantonio

fair enough. i thought maybe you were pissed they texted instead of calling.

          • SC Dave

            I love it. Old school!

          • AlbertInTucson

Or, in MY case, “REALLY old” school.

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

‘conduct his own affairs’ – is it bad that I am picturing your kid running 3 card monte schemes or a back alley dice game?

          • AlbertInTucson

            Man

When I think of where I roamed at that age as opposed to where I let my kid roam at that age. Night and Day difference.

    • Cam Meredith >/= Jerry Rice

I doubt it. I don’t see any malcontents on the roster at the moment. It seems like Pace has decided he’ll avoid potential cancers if at all possible.

    • willbest

A teen boy said something stupid. Obviously the penalty should be death.

      • John F

        Re-education camp…….

    • That means a team wants Allen to fall. Unveil the bomb on draft day. Most impact. Classic trade craft.
Remember when that dude’s pic of him in a gas mask popped up during draft?

      Aaawkward…

      • willbest

Probably. Wouldn’t be surprise if it was the Jets trying to move Cleveland off him.

  • CanadaBear

I had to laugh watching a couple of talking heads making fun of Cleveland. Apparently the GM, Dorsey, won’t tell the HC, Jackson, who the first pick is going to be tonight. He’s afraid Jackson will leak it. Both talking heads were going crazy saying if you don’t trust your HC, just fire him already. Seemed like a familiar scenario for some reason!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Irish Sweetness

      Kevin Costner styleee.

      And Kevin Costner knows football.

      • CanadaBear

He’s a two-sport hero. Gotta admit I really like Field of Dreams. I’ve been to ball field where the movie was set. It was a little over an hour’s drive from where I grew up.

        • Irish Sweetness

Bull Durham. Field of Dreams. Kev knows Baseball too, fer sure.

Don’t forget For the Love of the Game.

          • AlbertInTucson

I HATE that “Bull Durham” is now 30 years old and “Field of Dreams” just clicked 29.

        • AlbertInTucson

I like FIELD OF DREAMS and BULL DURHAM.

FOR LOVE OF THE GAME, not so much.

    • It seems to have worked out eventually for the Bears. We’ll see if CLE pulls it off too.

  • Big Mike

#2. McGlinchey is good. In my opinion he is on Paces top 8

    • Irish Sweetness

No doubt he’s a part of Nelson’s high draft stock. I wouldn’t cry if we got him.

    • My guess at the 8 (in no particular order): Edmunds, Davenport, Nelson, Barkley, McGlinchey, Derwin James, Roquan Smith, and Chubb.

      • Big Mike

No wild cards. Pace has at least 1, probably 2. There is someone that every GM in the league is sitting on. Seems to happen every year. Maybe not in top ten. So much misdirection, rumors, I forgot what I know. 🙂

        • My wild cards are more in guys I removed. Draft analysts love Minkah Fitzpatrick and Denzel Ward, but I don’t think either are in Pace’s 8 because Minkah’s not a huge upside freak athlete and Ward is smaller than pretty much every Fangio CB ever.

I replaced those with McGlinchey and Davenport, both of whom would be considered reaches in the top 10 based on pretty much every ranking I’ve seen.

      • AlbertInTucson

I remember seeing all those names, save Davenport, in various mocks.

I will be shocked if Chubb falls to 8.

  • AlbertInTucson

“Five Final Thoughts on the 2018 NFL Draft”

I submit there are NEVER any “Final Thoughts” on any Bears draft.

  • AlbertInTucson

“…are they willing to wait the four years it took for Favre to BECOME Favre?

    Huh?

    Wait for WHAT?

    His first 4,000 yard season?

Favre was 3,200+ yards a year from the get-go in GB.

70 TD passes in his first 47 games (45 starts) and completing 60% or better.

If they draft a guy who puts up those kind of numbers in his first 3 season as a Brown, they’ll elect him Mayor of Cleveland.

Hell! I’d love it if TRUBISKY approaches those numbers over the next 3 seasons!

    • AlbertInTucson

Note: This should not be construed as endorsing Mayfield.

    • Favre made his first Pro Bowl in his 2nd year in the NFL (1st in GB). Made it again in his 3rd season.

But didn’t make an All Pro team until year 5, didn’t win MVP until year 5, so I could see the argument he didn’t become Favre until year 5. Still, the first 4 years were plenty good.

      • AlbertInTucson

Yeah, “wait 4 years” criticism makes zero sense.

  • Lemme crank up the ole predictalotor…
30% S Derwin James. (Pure gut. Most Atlhletic AND productive player in draft)
25% OLB Davenport (Small scool. Measurables. “Upside”. Will make every fan think Paced reach)
15% CB (Pick 1. Using Fuller and Prince as Glennon “smokescreen”)
    ……

10% OG Nelson (All like him, so Pace doesnt)
10% LB Edmunds. (I just suspect Pace likes Davenport more for whatever reason)
5% LB Smith (think he falls to 20s and beyond to a 4-3 team)
5% OT McGlinchey ( feels like Pace has been trying to upgrade OT for a decade now. Could come in and play OG to start as is typical for rook OTs)

    98.76804 % Trade down in the 2nd.

    • SC Dave

That’s some precision on that last one, Butch.

I figured you must have originally had some fraction in mind, but when I tried the prime factorization of the number of 10 millionths (which you know, of course, to be 2 x 2 x 3 x 7 x 307 x 383) it was not readily obvious. Using 2,469,201 / 2,500,000 seems a little fringe…

      • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

The predictalotor is a super computer, you can trust the results with that degree of accuracy.

        • Margin of error: +/- 98.76804 %

Well, no, it’s been there longer. It just takes another half-decade or more to make it from the streets to Mom’s basement.

  • I asked this yesterday towards tail in of thread, but I’ll ask again.

IF Chubb falls to #6 and Colts willing to trade down, should Pace trade up for him?

    • leftcoastdave

      Yup.

    • BenderMcLugh

yes, but only if Fangio doesn’t like the 2nd tier guys much

  • AlbertInTucson

    Cosaby: Guilty.

    • CanadaBear

      No sympathy for that guy.

      • Cam Meredith >/= Jerry Rice

And rich. The greatest of equalizers.

      • willbest

I didn’t think it was because he lacked game, I thought it was because he preferred them that way.

        • CanadaBear

I really don’t get that. Not saying it isn’t true.

          • willbest

I don’t understand it either. If that is your thing, just get a doll.

          • John F

Weird power trip, not a sexual thing ……….

          • leftcoastdave

Bill Cosby was the hottest thing in Hollywood when “I Spy” came out. Handsome, cool, black when it was becoming hip all across America with women throwing their panties at him. Sad what that power trip did to him.

    • BenderMcLugh

hmmm so we may end up with Roquan Smith after all

  • To piggyback off the mock drafts, this is a YT Mock which I treat as a 1st RD snap-shot of prospects as opposed to an accurate prediction (as if such a thing exists).

    • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

I am a little disappointed, I expected a Rick Roll.

    • BerwynBomber

      Oliver the 8th overall?

I like the kid too but that would be glaringly poor use of draft value. You could easily trade back in R1 and get Oliver. (Even if you sold the pick at 75 cents on the dollar it would still be better than taking him at #8.)

Hell, Oliver might still be there when our 2nd round comes around.

      • late 1st early 2nd is his PROJECTED range.

But I hear a lot of rumblings about him being the top CB from draftniks.

It’s kinda the same rumblings we heard about Shea when PFW had him graded in the 4rth RD, or other boards 2nd at highest, but he still kept shooting up nearer the draft.

If Pace trades back, Oliver just screams Pace/Fangio DB.

  • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

Sam Darnold reminds me of Drew Brees. Maybe it’s just the giant mole on his face.

    • John F

Darnold is a turnover machine with terrible mechanics

      • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

        Doesn’t matter – GIANT MOLE!

        • AlbertInTucson

          Beauty Mark…?

        • John F

Perhaps you may know more than me as far as the correlation between a giant mole and throwing ability ……. I’m not up to speed on all this analytics stuff the young kids are all talking about

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

This was not a comment on abilities. It was just pointing out he reminds me of Brees because of the GIANT MOLE on his face. SMH.

      • AlbertInTucson

Or the fact that Darnold is 6-4 and Brees is 6ft.

  • BerwynBomber

I was looking forward to seeing how Mayfield would translate in the NFL.

    But not with CLE.

    • I hope to god he doesn’t go there. Favre is a classic example of a fiery personality destroying itself in the wrong situation (Falcons).

If the Browns draft Josh Allen or Mayfield, you know they’re just gonna bust there.

Browns should go the safest route and draft Darnold.

If they’re gonna gamble, might as well trade down, draft Lamar Jackson. Bring in McCarron (is he still available?) and just draft killers with their million picks.

      • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

        McCarron signed with the Bills.

        • wow. and I think on a relatively cheap 2 yr deal. Def gives them draft flexibility.

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

Its like $5 mill a year if I remember right.

          • BerwynBomber

Yeah, I really liked the McCarron deal. He might suck but he’s a bargain compared to Glennon.

A developmental project like Jackson would make sense for CLE because they already have, at worst, a bridge starter in Taylor.

  • leftcoastdave

    Are we there yet?

    • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

          • leftcoastdave

One KIA tag, then “user blocked.”

          • leftcoastdave

I think we just tag them. “KIA” (known it all)

That would be a fun inside chuckle.

Jeff did not have a Draft contest this year. What a slacker! Especially since he has a crew of writers this year.

  • John F

As everyone waits around for the draft, here is an article that pretty much says that no one has the ability to consistently draft well:

No Team Can Beat the Drafthttps://fivethirtyeight.com/features/no-team-can-beat-the-draft/

  • Waffle wants no white guys. So, here are 3 white guys to wrap your head around when Pace drafts them.

DT Taven Bryan. He’s been compared to Watt by some. That’s right. Didn’t know Watt was in this draft, did ya?

    https://www.seccountry.com/florida/look-former-florida-dt-taven-bryans-nfl-combine-numbers-similar-j-j-watt

OT McGlinchey. Irish AND from Notre Dame. You can already picture him cruising down the green river on St Paddy’s right next to Carmi and Colombo

    http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/chi-chicago-river-green-dye-st-patricks-day-20150312-htmlstory.html

    LB Leighton Vander Esch

Can you have a whiter name? No. No, you can not. A white LB from Boise St. What can possibly go wrong!?

    • leftcoastdave

      You’d prefer New Mexico?

    • Just saw Bryan interviewed on the red carpet. Wow, does he seem like a colossal douche! Has that Incognito vibe to him

    • BenderMcLugh

Is it apropos to say ” white power!”

  • John F

Here is a list of what Johnathan Wood thinks is Pace’s “Top 8”: Edmunds, Davenport, Nelson, Barkley, McGlinchey, Derwin James, Roquan Smith, and Chubb

What is the probability that Pace won’t pick any of them and will choose somebody else? 5%, 10%, 0%……….. I think the probability is more than zero …….. his first round picks have been, well let’s say out of the box ………..

    • ButtonShoes

It’s never a bad bet to believe that Pace will fuck up the pick.

      • leftcoastdave

        • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

Patriots meet twice with Lamar Jackson.

    They are…

    A) “REALLY interested in this guy! He’s the next Tom Brady!”

    B) “Not interested in him whatsoever so somebody please take this guy ahead of us and slide players we ARE interested in down in the draft.

  • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

Less than an hour to go. I would like to ask everyone to hold off on preempting televised draft announcements. In years past some websites would announce before the televised announcements, and posters would post it on here. This takes some of the excitement some of us have in seeing it live. I understand if you want to be an ass about it but would appreciate if you would not do it.

    • John F

For the most part I watch the ESPN coverage, but I have flipped over to NFL Network sometimes.

I may be crazy, but in the last few years it seems like ESPN goes to a commercial every time the Bears are about to make a pick. And then never goes back and talks about it.

    • John F

Are we allowed to post curse words without revealing the pick?

      • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

Cuss all you want just don’t say the name of the pick before Goodell announces it.

  • KentuckyBearsFan

Huge business thing went down yesterday for me with I think the right outcome.

I went to a bar at 10am today expecting to feel like a lone weirdo, with poetry books and a laptop.

No. It was filled with graduating nursing and medical students getting trashed.

    NFL draft? Game on.

    • Sactowns#1

Big business deal? So you’re buying the shots when I visit Kentucky right?

      • KentuckyBearsFan

It has to do with an opposing business playing with either monopoly money or bailout money the last 3 years. The auction for that property went for a so high enough price that there’s a very minimum chance that they keep it as the 40 year old 300-room POS it is now. At a minimum it becomes a Doubletree. At a max, it becomes a Marriott.

I actually live in Gainesville, Florida for the past 9 years. Work in NC.

And fuck yeah, I’ll buy shots.

Two days ago my first old friend that was stabilized and then killed by the hospital with too many surgeries because he had UF healthcare was his birthday. I bought Jager for two people who knew him because that was his drink.

    • Joecashflow

Was on Bourbon St. NOLA LAST WEEK and a poet for hire was in middle of street with a circa 1970 royal typewriter. 10 minute poem for a contribution. Gave him a $20 for a great one ! Lines kinda wavy made it even better.

I think mine was as a kid. It was at a birthday party (I think mine) and one of my uncles gave me a sip of beer. I remember hating it, and they all just laughed.

    Ahh, the 80s…

    • KentuckyBearsFan

I grew up in a dry Kentucky county with tee-totaling parents. My first drink came at age 17 or 18.

      • Yeah, my first “real” beer on my own was a Mickeys at a ditching party.

I think Zimas were just coming out then.

        • KentuckyBearsFan

I remember turning down a Zima with friends because I was worried my parents would find out.

          Zima: Sprite with alcohol.

        Miller High Life.

        • I actually like those in the bottle.
In cans it taste like shite.

          • leftcoastdave

Yea, but the high sugars turn to nasty gas. One in a bottle is nice. Leave it at that.
            “The Champagne of Bottled Beers.”

          • I often wonder if those classic beers like Bud and Miller tasted better in those old tin cans as opposed to aluminum crap now.

I mean, no one drinks wine or good whiskey in an aluminum cup.

          • KentuckyBearsFan

Bud would be great without the formaldehyde preservative (according to rumor).

Even though the taste is better than Miller, I noticed Bud gave me a weird hangover in comparison.

Sup fellas! Hope all is well! I’m very excited for today but I decided to stay home instead of going out. This should be interesting, I feel the Browns first 2 picks will dictate the tempo tonight. I don’t think they will draft a QB

    • KentuckyBearsFan

they’ll go with Barkley and Chubb I think.

      Or they should.

      • leftcoastdave

        Agree. Take sloppy seconds.

Well, I guess Pace knows what he is doing …………

Oh God, I’m listening to ESPN radio. And yet, I’m not feeling shame…yet.

  • ButtonShoes

Never gets old watching Goodell getting booed. TOTALLY deserved.

  • Malice Halice

I can see the Browns taking the running back n Quenton Nelson. Tyrod is good enough, get him a savage RB n some protection…. PLAYOFFS!

    • ButtonShoes

It would be Browns-like to fuck up and not take a QB.

      • Malice Halice

could be true, they always taking QB’s tho

      • leftcoastdave

        I!

      • KentuckyBearsFan

“It would be Browns-like to fuck up”.

The owner drafted Johnny Manziel based on the scouting of a homeless guy.

  • Think Browns are taking Mayfield. Seems Brownsy
Gmen will be interesting. Barkley or Darnold. Maybe even trade down.

    • ButtonShoes

They take Mayfield, they get an F for this draft. No excuse for not taking Darnold other than an outright admittance that you’re that stupid.

    • leftcoastdave

      You called it.

  • Joecashflow

Is Irish up yet? 8am in Thailand.

    • Irish Sweetness

I’m reading this long after we’ve picked so I can find out how the blog experienced it :o)

The Browns are waiting for Godot.

  • John F

    I don’t get it, I just don’t get it ………..

  • That Guy

The Factory of Sadness just churned out another 3 years of pain.

I predicted concussed by Week 4, on IR by week 12, a back up in 2019, and in the CFL by 2020.

  • ButtonShoes

Oh man. It had to be that Favre tweet, didn’t it? I bet the pick was going to be Darnold and Dorsey must have just seen that tweet, and that was it. He picked Mayfield. HAD TO BE.

  • Darnold looks like he found out that supermodel who turned him down has herpes…

Disappointed at first, then remembered he didn’t get drafted by the Browns.

    • willbest

Its $3 million over the first 4 years though.

  • KentuckyBearsFan

wow. Maybe Josh Allen would have been less surprising.

  • ButtonShoes

Giants have to take Darnold here, right?

  • John F

I complain a lot about the Bears, but now I understand why the Browns are so bad. This Mayfield selection makes no sense whatsoever to me ………

    • That Guy

Yeah, did they really think Mayfield wouldn’t be there at 4?

    • KentuckyBearsFan

what sometimes I thought were conspiracies in this world, I realize now it’s just organizational incompetence.

  • ButtonShoes

    They took Barkley! LOL

  • Guess the Gmen think they’re making a run with Eli.

    • ButtonShoes

They’re going to regret this. They need a successor to Eli. This was their best shot to get him.

  • Malice Halice

Yea NYG offense finna be INSANE! Not better than ours tho

  • Joecashflow

Ok, now pick 3 more QBs

    • Malice Halice

      Please. Let the train ROLL

  • Jets I think will take Darnold or Rosen

  • John F

Darnold falls into the Jets lap, unbelievable

  • ButtonShoes

Browns will take Chubb at 4 because of this. Damn.

  • That Guy

Josh Allen to Miami at 8, Bears trade back to 11. Book it.

    • Malice Halice

Fuck yea! Get us back in da 2nd round!

  • willbest

I don’t get drafting RB’s this high and making them a top 5 paid player at the position

  • ButtonShoes

Is it possible the Jets fuck this up and take Allen instead of Darnold?

    • They are the JETS.

    • willbest

      Didn’t he regress though?

      • ButtonShoes

Darnold? Don’t care. Regressing or not, Darnold’s the guy to take. Allen reminds me of Cutler.

  • KentuckyBearsFan

Josh Rosen should drop below 15. He has a reputation of bad character. That’s not the face of the franchise. His college teammates don’t like him.

    • ButtonShoes

I love Rosen. Dude has fire.

      • KentuckyBearsFan

I really don’t follow the college game. You could be right.

He just doesn’t seem like a good guy.

  • leftcoastdave

Love it. Barkley best back in the Big Ten for the last two years.
    That’s a Jordan Howard pedigree!

  • ButtonShoes

    Jets didn’t fuck it up!

  • John F

I really wonder about Darnold long term, he is a turnover machine, has some of the worst throwing mechanics and footwork you have ever seen, and tends to disappear in big games.

  • Darnold needs to clean up the delivery and TOs, but he’s the safest.

    Watch that USC-Texas game. Clutch.

    • Big Mike

      Good start. No surprises

      • leftcoastdave

Here too. We’ve only had to block one user.

        • Big Mike

I have 3. They were blocked already

    • John F

Texas was horrible last year, gave up 51 to maryland

      • Yeah, but they kept scoring and Darnold kept having to score in like 1 minute.

It was a very intense playoff like atmosphere, and he kept coming through.

  • ButtonShoes

Chubb has to be the pick at 4. Damn damn damn.

    • Malice Halice

      Chubb n Myles! SHEESH!

      • ButtonShoes

        That’s pretty ridiculous, isn’t it?

        • Malice Halice

          4sho!

      • John F

        Myles is overrated

        • Malice Halice

Maybe he needs help? But that’s not gonna happen

    • Browns might be wanting to trade down.

      • Big Mike

Ward. First surprise for me Chubb drops to 5

  • BenderMcLugh

Haha why does it seem that once Saquon gets blasted by an nfl safety or linebacker that he will explode into a bunch of Lego pieces

    • ButtonShoes

Jeff is right. Giants have no OL. What the hell is Barkley going to be able to do?

      • There’ll will be plenty of good OG/OTs at the top of the 2nd.

Price, Hernandez, Williams… to name a few.

  • WHHHHHAT? lol

  • ButtonShoes

    AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • ButtonShoes

    OH MY GOD

  • ButtonShoes

THE BROWNS BROWNSED IT UP AGAIN

  • Malice Halice

    YES!

  • John F

This is why they are the Browns

  • leftcoastdave

    Wow!!!!! Loving it.

  • Chubb might fall…

    • ButtonShoes

      LET HIM FALL TO 8

  • Can the Browns keep drafting till #8 please?

    • John F

This is a funny comment ………..

  • Big Mike

Denzel Ward is a small surprise. Chubb on the board at 5. That’s a small surprise

    • Some don’t think he’s explosive enough. Kind of a Chris Long type.

I guess the Browns were one of those teams

    • leftcoastdave

I liked him at 8 if the big three were gone.

  • Malice Halice

This prevents the bland Fudgers from gettin him as well!

  • John F

    Denver will not take Chubb
Colts may, but they need linemen
    Bucs would take him

    • Bucs might, but they’re also in desperate need of secondary help in that division.

    • leftcoastdave

      ??? K.

    • John F

I stand corrected ………. but Denver needs a QB

    • Big Mike

      Doh

  • ButtonShoes

So assume that other teams trade up for 5 and 6. What does it take for us to get 7 from TB?

  • Big Mike

Mayfield /Ward would upset me if I were a browns fan

    • Malice Halice

      I agree!

    • ButtonShoes

There should be hunting parties carrying torches and pitchforks out for Dorsey in Cleveland.

    • John F

Browns will be Browns I guess

    • Hue Jackson is 1-31.

  • Joecashflow

Bears will get Roquan. Chubb will.be gone.

  • John F

    Denver’s pick is in ………

  • ButtonShoes

They’re picking? Either a QB or Chubb.

  • ButtonShoes

    Fuck. Oh well.

  • Wow. Chubb and Miller. Yiikes.

    • ButtonShoes

      That’s a terror, alright.

    • Big Mike

      Knew that was happening

    • Big Mike

2 draftsble QBs on the board ahead of us. If one is left for us wer are moving back. And I can say I semi called it

  • FresnoBear88

    Mayfield next Manziel

  • John F

This is why the Broncos are usually good

  • ButtonShoes

Colts going to trade down or take Nelson?

    • FresnoBear88

      Nelson

  • Joecashflow

Hope take Nelson so Pace can’t

    • Big Mike

      Shhh

  • John F

Colts go nelson now that Chubb is gone, right?

  • John F

    Colts pick is in

  • John F

So Bucs go DB, so where does that leave the Bears ??????????

    • FresnoBear88

      Roquan

      • Big Mike

Trade back. Someone wants a QBs. Unless TB trades bsck

    • ButtonShoes

Smith I guess. Better be Smith over someone like Edmunds or Davenport.

  • Yup. Nelson gone.

    • Big Mike

So QBs could be on the board when we draft

      • Teams must be getting trigger happy.
Have a feeling we’re gonna be the first trade in the draft.

        • ButtonShoes

          How far down though?

        • John F

Yes, this must mean no decent trades

        • Big Mike

Yep. Trade back to 12 get a third

      • leftcoastdave

        Which do we take?

    • leftcoastdave

      From South Bend to Indianapolis.

      Nice.

      • John F

        Cheap to move ……

      • Big Mike

One of the top 4 QBs will be on the board for the Bears

  • ButtonShoes

Damn. Nelson would’ve been a good one to have.

  • Joecashflow

One pick away from Roquan Smith thank God. We develop fucking guards, not buy them ! It’s called coaching.

    • ButtonShoes

      Smith would be fine.

    • Malice Halice

THANKYOU! We got the best OL coach in the country! That pick would be ASANINE

  • Malice Halice

We finna get Calvin Ridley I bet, if not him, then Trumaine

    • John F

If they take Ridley I will puke

      • Malice Halice

I’ll run out my house Richard Pryor style.

  • Fuck. Bills traded up with Bucs. That was our trade!

  • ButtonShoes

We’ve got a trade, and it isn’t us.

  • John F

    Bills traded into number 7

  • leftcoastdave

    Ahhhhh!

    Two seconds!

  • ButtonShoes

Bills. Has to be Rosen, right? Can’t be Allen.

  • Gotta be Josh Rosen

  • John F

Well this HAS to be a QB for the Bills

  • John F

Do the Bears pick or trade with the Dolphins

  • leftcoastdave

Getting two seconds might mean more than one bidder.

  • Wow. Allen.

    • Irish Sweetness

      Tweetboy!

  • ButtonShoes

    OMG. ALLEN?!

  • leftcoastdave

    Who wants Rosen?

  • John F

Why are the Bills waiting, they traded for a specific guy!!!

    • John F

      Nevermind

  • ButtonShoes

Anybody want Rosen? Gotta deal with us.

  • FresnoBear88

Trade the 8th so someone can nab Rosen

  • KentuckyBearsFan

    Josh Allen in Buffalo.

  • ButtonShoes

Enjoy Bills – you just got yourself Cutler 2.0.

  • John F

Alright guys – PICK or TRADE

    • Joecashflow

      Pick!!!

  • leftcoastdave

Will the Pats give us more than their two firsts?

    • John F

That’s too much, isn’t it? I mean the Pats wouldn’t pay that, would they?

  • Only problems, anticipation, timing, awareness and accuracy…other than that, Josh Allen is good lol

  • burntorangenavyblue

What up all? Hope all is well with everyone!

Can we just rename the Browns to “Smells like Teen Spirit” or something?

As soon as I turn it on, ESPN commentators talking about the Jets’ pick dude having “A nice head of hair” as first few compliments…..this is how you kill a sports fuckin 4 letter network.

  • FresnoBear88

    Trade the pick!!!

    • ButtonShoes

I don’t think anyone will trade with us. I think other teams feel like Rosen will fall. And it sure looks like he’s falling.

  • Pretty Boy Assassin

    Please trade down.

  • John F

    Bears pick is in

  • Tortured Bear fan

    it’s….

  • FresnoBear88

Pick is in baby aww shit

  • Tortured Bear fan

trade? pick R. smith or Minkha

  • ButtonShoes

Pick’s in and I know what it is.

  • FresnoBear88

This is like the time when you bone a girl for the first time and her panties barely come off

  • leftcoastdave

    Noooooooooo!

    *shrugs*

    It’s fine.

  • KentuckyBearsFan

    Imagine Dragons – Believer

    Come on, already.

  • Ugh. I would’ve preferred the Bill’s two 2nd rounders…oh well.

    • ButtonShoes

      Smith’s OK though.

      • Irish Sweetness

        He’s a safety.

    • Big Mike

      We got our guy. Done.

  • Tortured Bear fan

    first day contributor.

    • ButtonShoes

No question. He’ll be ready out of the gate.

  • KentuckyBearsFan

    Okay not crazy…..Roquan.

  • John F

I guess, the guy is pretty good

  • Joecashflow

    How I love no surprises.

  • Pretty Boy Assassin

Well, guess we thought our problem was speed. We better not count on him to stop stuff up the middle.

    • Big Mike

Play him weak side he will be exceptional.

      • Pretty Boy Assassin

Agreed. Can cover WR and TEs. Day one starter.

        • Big Mike

Are the bears allowed to cover tight ends

  • That Guy

Hey, we didn’t Brown the pick.

  • leftcoastdave

Damn, Bucs get two seconds to trade down five and da Bears get . . . nada for offers?

    • John F

      Two 2018 seconds

    • That Guy

      Guess Rosen is not rising.

  • CRAZYBEARNORTH48

Solid player an fills a need ..

  • John F

I remember Smith in the NCAA championship, he did stand out against a very good team

    • Tortured Bear fan

and was all over the field

    • He might be like Watson – one of those players who rises to the occasion.
      Let’s hope so.

  • ButtonShoes

    McGlinchey? All about protecting Garoppolo.

  • BuddhaJoe

No wierdness this year. Welcome Smith.

    • Big Mike

      Exactly!!!

  • And of course, TV goes to commercial right after Bears pick. And before our pick, they talk about Allen.

    Nice.

    • John F

Get used to this, it always happens with bears picks on ESPN – it has for the last few years

    • ButtonShoes

Since when has national TV ever been interested in the Bears? They always overlook us.

    • burntorangenavyblue

Smith doesn’t have a nice head of hair that the 4 letter network can drool about, like the Jets pick

  • John F

    Tomorrow probably a WR

    • ButtonShoes

Would be nice if Ridley fell to tomorrow.

  • KentuckyBearsFan

he knows he has to live up to Lach’s legacy.

    I have a feeling he won’t stop.

  • leftcoastdave

Harry puts two kids into the top 9. Now we’ve got him to train up our youngsters.

    • Big Mike

      Great, great sentiment. Yes

  • Cards cutting in before MIA

  • Tortured Bear fan

tomorrow best OL, CB or EDGE

  • ButtonShoes

Cards have to take Rosen here, right? They can’t be dumb enough to pass on him. Can they?

    • Tortured Bear fan

      surely but never knows

  • leftcoastdave

Pace gave Fangio love with Smith.
