Match-Up That Matters: Bears at Giants

| November 17th, 2016

The Giants are a bizarre team. Talented, poorly-coached, temperamental, exciting, boring and just overall perplexing. What’s the match-up that matters?

Entirety of the Bears Defense

Odell Beckham Jr.

Three thoughts:

  • Beckham is the most spectacular talent at the wide receiver position I’ve ever seen. But he has two supreme flaws. (1) He’s an emotional train wreck. Hit him a few times when he’s not expecting to be hit and he’ll probably start crying. Not metaphorically. He literally cries on the sideline. (2) He drops the ball quite a bit. While it doesn’t get covered by the national media, obsessed with his one-handed show stoppers, he’s less reliable with two hands. This is a game where the Bears need to stick a corner on Beckham early and tell Adrian Amos to separate him at the torso every time he tries to go over the middle of the field.
  • Giants offensive line is better than many believed it would be coming into the season – especially at home – but it’s still not a unit that should stonewall the surging Bears pass rush.
  • Eli Manning has had success getting the ball to Beckham on quick slants and slyly smiling as OBJ takes those three-yard completions for 70-yard touchdowns. As crazy as it sounds, the most important fundamental to beating the Giants is tackling. Tackle well on the outside and NYG will struggle to move the ball consistently down the field.

Stop Beckham, win. Do I expect the Bears to do either? Who cares, I’m in France.

  • Bonjour, bitches!

Did Jeff promise to leave the country if Trumpf won?

    Read some Baudelaire, Jeff!

Last time we had to stop ONE guy, Hilton racked up like 200 yds.

Hopefully Callahan plays cuz if Porter has to shadow Odell, it’s gonna get ugly.

Though I still contend the most important factor is, um, TOs, esp at the QB position.

If Cargo turns it over 3 times in the first half again, he better enter the witness protection program cuz McPhee will strangle him with his bare hands.

From the last thread – the Hoyer love is mystifying. Numbers do not and cannot tell the full story on QBs. Was Hoyer better
than Kenny Stabler (75.3)? Orton? They had higher ratings, are they

Sigh… Dude. 300/2/0 erra single game starts looking REEEEAAAALL good when your D and specials are stout only giving up a few points a game and scoring some points.

All of a sudden you have a 10 – 6 team and steamrolling into the playoffs.

As opposed to that shitbag we hVe that’ll bouy dreams one game, and totally crush them the next. Done with that garbage

    • BerwynBomber

Debating Hoyer/McCown/Orton was fun. What’s the harm?
In terms of Stabler, he was an EXTREMELY dicey HoF enshrinee. Plus, it’s hard to compare efficiency #s from eras that far apart. Hoyer/Orton/McCown all suited up about the same time.

Weird the schedule says tonights game is on NBC. Saints v. Panthers. So I guess its for last place in the NFCS which is still better than us.

    • BerwynBomber

Michaels and Collingsworth have announced the last two games on NFL network so no surprise that NBC is broadcasting one. There was some discussion earlier in the year that NBC proposed having Tirico cut his play-by-play teeth on a THUS broadcast and the NFL demanded Michaels.

Thing I learned this week is that there are only three T-Day games this years. Having they had four the last couple of years?

  • Sauron’s right eyeball

Two Super Bowls later and Eli gets zero love. That’s how it goes boys.

    • willbest

Eli is the most clutch QB in the family, but he is hated because he can’t simultaneously play the offensive coordinator position too.

      • MB30SD

No, in reality he’s def clutch, but in the reg season he’s a mixture of don’t care cutty and Matt flaco… Or Joe ryan

        • BerwynBomber

Flacco has the Eli DNA too. Mediocre or worse in the regular season. Joe Montana in the post-season.

          • Scharfinator

His play during their latest SB run was absurd.

        • Eli is truly baffling.

He is basically Cutler during the regular, except he doesn’t get hurt and can’t scramble.

Bad body language. Not a vocal leader. Turnover prone. Shoddy accuracy and decision making.

But he’s been nails on two playoff runs.

          Headscratcher for sure.

          • BearDown100393

Clutch circus catches also saved Eli.

          • Yeah, but to even escape that and have the presence of mind to heave it down the field and essentially hit the top of Tyree’s helmet in such a tense moment – clutch.

      • BerwynBomber

One other positive about Eli? Durable as duct tape. He’ll probably end up closest to Favre’s iron man streak. Peyton wasn’t shabby in that regard either until all the neck stuff.

Commenting on this post insinuates a minute iota of give-a-shit. I have none.

I failed to properly display that, however, because this is a comment and it is posted.

This is where I’m at mentally with the Bears. The apathy literally has me running in circles trying to justify its own apathetic…ness. fak. Fucking Bears man. It was supposed to get better this year, and I genuinely believed it would(to the tune of 8-8). I feel like a fool for assuming such.

I stood right next to Shania Twain at about 8 AM while she was in a track suit, ball cap, no makeup and her baby in her arm. She was stunningly beautiful (as long as she doesn’t sing those crappy songs!).

Nah! I was in my early 50’s when I worked her show and it takes a little more than looking to get my old pal worked up (esp if they still have clothes on). They warned us not to talk to her. I was invisible to her. Interestingly, I was walking around in the bowels of the arena and came across a guy in an alcove with a reel-to-reel and other equipment. He was in playback mode (I have the same reel-to-reel) so I can only assume he was adding to her vocals.

  • Has any blog member grown up in Virginia Beach?

Hey, Trac, Irish, and ppl who don’t think the Clintons being part of a sex cult or crazy stuff like that is not that far off.

    Check out this interview

She sounds like a crazy christian fixated on gays or “cherry marines”, but I actually was casually fact checking a lot of those names and connections she was throwing out, and to my surprise, they were true!

She’s a bit disorganized, but basically she’s just going from memory, and her memory seems to be very detailed.

Lemme know if you guys think this is BS or not.

It certainly seems like it has a lot of truths to it.

    • Weed Superman (GP)

she said Jeffery Dahmer was a secret SpecOps dude.

      • There are a few details which make me wonder (the Benet connection too). I’m more interested in those ppl she actually knew.

She came from the “elite” military background of the South, and admits she was basically married off young for political purposes, and has a masters, I believe, so not entirely stupid.

But look up the names she’s dropping. I mean, she brings up obscure figures like Walt Whitman Roscow

and they sorta jibe with her narrative about what kinda ppl (Ivy league. German connection. Sadistic/perverted) are controlling everything behind the scenes.

    • willbest

2 hours is longer than my attention span.

      • She covers A LOT.

Her ex hubby (who is who she says he is) spilled the beans to her in drunken guilt-ridden rants.

And she herself came from that elite military southern background, so she was pretty much born into it.

The actual un-edited version is EIGHT hours long.

Either she’s the greatest story teller on earth, or a lot of what she says is true.

I don’t see how someone straight lie that detailed for eight hours, esp when a lot of her claims can be easily checked.

It’s very interesting, esp when considering who’s really behind the whitehouse.

  • JP Morgan must shell out $264M for hiring Chinese versions of the Bushes.

But hey, business men will always do the right thing if only pesky government disappeared according to Ayn Rand and her minions!

    • willbest

Reads to me like Cultural Imperialism. How dare US regulators tell multinational corporations how they can or cannot conduct business in other countries.

      • “The DoJ’s William Sweeney said: “When foreign officials are among those
involved in the bribe, the international free market system and our
national security are among the major threats we face.”

Would actually like to know what Trump thinks about this.

        • willbest

In many ways I find systems like the Chinese (and Russian) more honest. In the US they funnel bribes through K street lobbyist firms that hire former government officials that passed laws/regs or awarded contracts to the corporations hiring the lobbyist firm.

Or in the case of the Clintons, collect tens of millions from people doing business before her as Sec of State. While paying Bill $300k to speak to their employees.

          • Yes, because we want to be more like China and Russia.

          • willbest

I am merely pointing out that bribery exists in every system where individuals have authority. Even in the libertarian utopia where consumer watch groups instead of the government act to rate companies… aka Moodys/S&P, there will be bribery.

    • SC Dave

I guess I’m confused on the Rand reference. How does buying influence with the government repudiate the idea that were there no government, you couldnt but influence from it?

      • Doesn’t Ayn Rand promote meritocracy and view promoting unqualified candidates simply based on connections as the devil of bureaucracies?

Yet private businesses do this all the time, and in this case, add bribery to the case.

And plz, Rand supporters want to dump regulations, in which case, JP Morgan would’ve just kept doing this and much worse.

        They even had spreadsheets.

        • willbest

Neither libertarian nor communist/socialist utopias are achievable because both assume an infallible man.

The problem for designing any system is to harness the fallen man so that his self interest becomes a virtue. This is a bit tricky because even in self-interest man is hardly rational.

The problem with much of the regulations out there now is they provide you with a false sense of confidence. This lures money to them that they would otherwise not have access to.

For example, if the FedGov wasn’t guaranteeing my savings account, I would be a little dubious about granting a no-interest, non secured loan to the bank, which is precisely what your savings account is.

          • I agree with that both communism and libertarian utopias are based on false premises.

I remember reading Karl Marx, how he argued that man wants to be equal.

Even in college I knew that was false.

Man doesn’t want to be equal to his neighbor. He desires to be SUPERIOR to his neighbor.

And I remember reading Rand the same way.

Man will do the right thing when free from government

Again, a false premise easily proven by history and personal experience.

Both economic/political systems will never work in reality because, sadly, they assume the best in man, not the worst.

For a economic/political theory to work, we must first start with assuming the WORST in man, ego/greed/pride/avarice, and go from there.

I view regulations as necessary (not desirable) safeguards against the worst in man.

No one LIKES bureaucracies, just like no one likes taxes, but the pragmatic (and not idealistic) view them as necessary in a modern civilization.

But it’s not as if either are perfect, but again, it’s better to have imperfect safegaurds like regulations, the police, military, laws, than none at all.

  • willbest

So I just saw the Tom Brady footlocker commercial. Well done. Well done.

    • CanadaBear

I think you’re reading more into it than is there. My take is, Fox is saying adios. One thing they didn’t mention is a lot of these supplements don’t list everything in them. Of course, it’s probably hooey and he was doing ‘roids. Pretty sure this paves the way for Alshon to go out of town after this season. No way the Bears pay him $17.9 mil next year on the tag.

      • willbest

No QB, No #1 WR… I hope we land ourselves a pro-bowl tackle because Howard is going to see a lot of 8-man fronts next year.

        • CanadaBear

Could the Beloved go into “Suck for Luck” mode next year? Doubt it but that scenario would make it possible.

          • No. We’ve seen this squad be competitive when we don’t turn it over.

I’ve seen a lot of other teams play who have better records, and honestly, they’re really not that much better than the Bears.

The thing with the Bears is that they’re REALLY close to turning some of those games, but they consistently don’t.

Don’t know if that’s just bad luck, coaching, players not good enough, or all of the above, but teams that are really close to winning games week in week out CAN turn it around.

The Raiders were like that last year, losing a lot of close ones, and now, they’re playoff bound.

I seriously think we can compete like that, but admit that Fox might be why we’re stuck in the mud.

          • willbest

At the end of the day, you are your record. We were 5 plays away from 9-7 last year. We were also 5 plays away from 4-12. Good teams make those plays, bad teams don’t.

          • Yeah, but the Raiders were a 7 win team last year, and the arrow pointed up (both you and I predicted they’d be good this year).

I see the same potential with the Bears, the biggest difference being perhaps the coaching staff and QB.

That being said, I don’t really trust Fox.

Del Rio transformed from being a conservative codger to aggressive maven.

Even when losing, you can tell they were playing hard.

Under Fox, when things begin to devolve, the team packs it in rather fast.

That’s perhaps the most disturbing aspect of this team. They don’t respond to adversity well, and that starts from the top.

But if they dump Fox and Cutler, maybe Fangio in the interim can energize this team going forward.

          • Make RedZone Conv% Great Again

Indy fucking sucks WITH Luck because their team overall is dogshit….and we lost to them.

          • CanadaBear

Imagine where they would be without Luck.

          • BerwynBomber

Yeah, but you’d still rather suck with Luck than w/out him. He’s already taken them to one conference title game.

          • Huge Bears Penis

if they don’t start protecting Luck he is going end up shell shocked like the original Carr.

          • I think he’s developed a lot of bad habits already.

No doubt regimes will try to “redeem” him, but that’s an uphill battle, IMO.

Wilson and Carr developed much faster than Luck.

I think even Cousins has performed better.

          • Huge Bears Penis

if they are not careful he will end up like Cutler with his bad habits.

          • Pretty much.

From ESPN; Bears RT Bobby Massie (concussion) and NT Eddie Goldman (ankle) were among the players to miss practice on Thursday. Goldman re-injured his ankle in Tampa, his first game back after he missed six weeks with a high ankle sprain.

Like my “Evangelical” uncle who said the world would end because we invaded Iraq (the first time).

I said, “Ok. tell you what.

            I’ll bet you $50 the world won’t end in a year’s time.”

To which he responded, “No. That’s ok.”

          • AlbertInTucson

            Packers signed Michael.

Next time Detroit takes on Green Bay it could be biblical.

            The Christine’s vs. The Lions!

  • Huge Bears Penis

The Saints need to work on their FG blocking, or get their K to start getting a little more lift. 2 weeks in a row had one blocked.

    • And returned for TDs (that should’ve been one too).

Maybe letting Barth go wasn’t their best decision.

      • Huge Bears Penis

their K is a rookie, so probably learning things he did in college will not work in NFL.

      • SC Dave

        For two teams

  • Huge Bears Penis

Brees needs to step it up, I need better points from him this week in FF.

    • BerwynBomber

Bad night for Breezy. In fairness, he is often due for one. He’s been carrying that shit team for years now.

      • AlbertInTucson

That INT is one of the worst throws I ever recall seeing him make outside of desperation time.

        • Huge Bears Penis

add the fumble and FF points are shit.

    • haha. I think this had the highest point total projection of this week.

But Brees away from the Dome vs resurgent Panther’s D – dicey I guess.

He’ll still get his yds somehow though. Usually does.

    • AlbertInTucson

I have been rolling with Matty Ryan but Atlanta is bye so I need some more productivity from the guy who was my first pick, Cam Newton.

    • SC Dave

      Go Panthers!

      • Huge Bears Penis

        true colors bleeding through… LOL

        • SC Dave

My #2 team all the way.

  • BerwynBomber

Meanwhile, #5 LOU is getting pummeled by HOU.

    • SC Dave

Minor league football… does anyone care?

      • Huge Bears Penis

    • AlbertInTucson

      Jackson. Fumble.

  • AlbertInTucson

Not one of the better MAYHEM spots.

  • Hard to believe Mark Ingram won the Heisman once upon a time.

    • AlbertInTucson

Remember, that award is for the best COLLEGE player.

My opponent has him in his lineup so I don’t need Mr. Ingram to flash any of his old college form tonight.

  • AlbertInTucson

Shitty spots. An NFL zebra specialty.

  • AlbertInTucson

    Whoa, Nelly!

Ingram got his bell rung on THAT hit.

  • AlbertInTucson

    Luke Keuchly or Bobby Wagner.

You couldn’t live long on the difference, assuming you could find any difference.

  • AlbertInTucson

I think the FG makes sense.

Yes, its still 3 possessions but now it’s not 3 TDs.

  • AlbertInTucson

The Panthers blew a 17 -0 lead last Sunday.

    Carolina fans just got nervous.

    • I knew Brees couldn’t be held down forever.

That run game is better with HighTower in, which opens up those passing lanes.

CAR will have to ball control. Run Stewart and Cam

      • AlbertInTucson

Hightower is a nice comeback story.

  • AlbertInTucson

Now the Panthers are nervous, too.

  • AlbertInTucson

That Saints FG is making more sense by the second.

    • Sometimes points is just about stopping or gaining momentum.

      It’s psychological.

A lot of coaches like Arians or Mike Tomlin sometimes don’t get that.

  • BerwynBomber

Gotta hold onto that one if you want a huge comeback win on the road.

    • AlbertInTucson

That would have been a GREAT catch, though.

      • BerwynBomber

A very good catch. He highpointed it but in today’s NFL that’s almost expected you don’t let the ground jar it loose.

        • AlbertInTucson

REALLY tough landing flat on his back like that.

  • Shawn Harrison

Shonbear back. Couldnt sit by after reading this Jeff Dickerson (AKA Tool) ESPN report about Cutler losing the locker room. Maybe it’s true, but this “so called” sports journalist stated:

“Cutler finished the game 16-of-30 for 183 yards, two interceptions (one for a pick-six) and two lost fumbles.”

What the “F”?!? Jordan Howard lost one of those fumbles. How the hell can you possibly report that wrong when you are a journalist. ~Unless~ you are just trying to create some kind of shit. There is already enough based on the truth without untruthful add-ons…regardless of anything about Cutler I really don’t understand why he is a target for this crap ALWAYS.

    • AlbertInTucson

Jay DID fumble twice. Howard’s ws a 3rd fumble.

Cutler coughed it up in the Red Zone and then in his own end zone.

      • shawn harrison

The box score shows only 4 turn overs, if it didnt get turned over it doesnt count

        • AlbertInTucson

          Did you watch the game?

He fumbled to kill a drive and he fumbled resulting in a safety.

Who you gonna believe? Me or some bozo making a typo on a box score?

          • shawn harriosn

i relent and believe you (I did watch the game), just seems like they (media sports guys) are always trying to make things worse and pile on with created controversies. We all know what Cutler is and they don’t help with useless articles and never any other emphasis on that crap game plan when Howard was getting 6-8 yards per run, wo why are they ever trying to pass the ball, and the real major turn in the game was the beginining of the 3rd quarter failure in not tackling Winston at the goal line (potential safety) when we had the momentum from the lucky hail mary. nobody talks about it. when or if they do it is quickly glossed over for more Culter bashing.

          • AlbertInTucson

I have not been a Cutler basher and have often defended him.against what I consider spurrious attacks.

I have no idea whether he’s “Lost the locker room” or not and would never pretend to think I knew if he had.

I dont bother Dickerson and his ilk.

They are paid to get clicks.

But Jay Cutler sucked ALL day last Sunday in every aspect of his game you can think of.

I take no joy in saying that.

I remain mystified as to how one can go from that Monday night against the Vikings to that Sunday afternoon against Tampa.

          • shawn harrison

        • AlbertInTucson

I dont know what box score you looked at but the one one the NFL site shows Cutler with TWO fumbles.

      • BerwynBomber

Overreaction from a Cutty fan with eight year long victim complex. It. Is. So. Old.

Won’t miss that if this is, indeed, his last year.

        • Huge Bears Penis

          Stockholm Syndrome.

  • AlbertInTucson

    Good time out by Peyton.

You can’t put the seconds back on the clock once they tick off.

  • Malice Halice

Y is peanut still a part of the Panthers franchise? I swear I thought he retired as a BEAR

    • BerwynBomber

Is he? What’s he doing for them? I thought he got a gig with Fox.

      • Malice Halice

Yea, they showed him right b4 cam ran for couple yards b4 they punted. They showed peanut in the background

        • BerwynBomber

Hmmmm … a Panther for life! Who knew?

          • Malice Halice

So u CAN retire a jersey yet stay affiliated with the other team?

          • BerwynBomber

            I was clowning …

          • Malice Halice

            I was so sincere…

    • That Guy

A lot of guys on the D played for the Panthers when he was still there. I’m sure he’s hanging around Carolina because he’s got a lot of close friends on the team.

He was at Soldier Field for the Eagles game. I’m sure he gets around quite a bit.

      • Malice Halice

So retired players aren’t obligated to strictly wear their retired team’s attire? I kinda felt like I was getting chested on when I saw him in baby blue.

  • AlbertInTucson

    UH-oh, Luke.

    • AlbertInTucson

      THAT does not look good.

Like he KNOWS his season is over.

      • AlbertInTucson

        He is in tears.

THAT shows you how scary they can be.

        • BerwynBomber

Like Beckham, Kuechly literally cries …

  • EnderWiggin

Are they really going to go three n out?

    • EnderWiggin

      • AlbertInTucson

Their ONLY first down of the 4th quarter..

        • BerwynBomber

And Collingsworth seemed to question the D call by the Saints D coordinator. That was interesting analysis.

          • MB30SD

Dude is almost as annoying as buck… At least he’s played the game I guess

  • BerwynBomber

Damn stupid not to fair catch that ball. That play wasted eleven seconds. And netted nothing.

    • willbest

Or at least just run straight forward and pick up 5 yards.

  • AlbertInTucson

Hmm. 3 points from Cam for me tonight. Not good.

    Turns out my
    opponent dint play Igram. Darn.

He did have Benjamin who but up a zero.

He has Dak and Zeke this weekend.
