The Picks For Today

Oakland +4 over HOUSTON

You’ve heard the stat all week. Connor Cook is the first quarterback to make his first start in the postseason. And he’s doing so against one of the league’s best defenses. The gambler in me is screaming, “TAKE THE TEXANS!”

But I’m not doing it. Because I don’t think Brock Osweiler is any good and this seems like the perfect stage for him to formally end his Houston career. Not saying the Raiders win the game. Saying they keep it close.

Texans 16, Raiders 13

SEATTLE -7.5 over Detroit

Lions stink. And Devin Hester!

Seahawks 27, Lions 14

    Konichiwa bitches.

Next Saturday… I wear thee dress. Thanks fox

    • willbest

What was the bet on that?

      • MB30SD

        Chargers v bears worse record.

        …The Fucking charges. Smfh

        • burntorangenavyblue

That’s a terrible bet considering both teams weren’t viewed very favorably coming into the season and you just really NEVER KNOW what you’ll get out of these two teams. NEVER KNOW!

          • MB30SD

Correct. In the end will, I was a little drunk and talking smack about a season full of promise. Pace had just gone and gotten the two best FA ilbs on the market and I was read to see us go 9-7 at least and have the chargers… Charger themselves. That and pretty sure I’m going to parlay the dress into new ass that night. A chick’s hopefully.

          • burntorangenavyblue

There might be chicks that dig that kind of stuff, but don’t go as far as wearing as a g-string.

Don’t forget cocoa butter to make those legs soft and smooth!

          • MB30SD

I’ll wear my normal banana republic boxer briefs… And I’ll def shave my legs.. and get my old bail color done… Silver.

          • Waffle

            from ashy to classy!

    • CanadaBear

Do you have any really funny friends that would real-time blog this? Pretty sure we would all like that A LOT! There’s no doubt in my mind you will have a great time that night and probably get laid.

      • burntorangenavyblue

        Laid by what exactly? Hehe

        • MB30SD

I’ll be flattered by all comers

      • burntorangenavyblue

If he pulls it off really well, he just might lay himself. NTTAWWT!

      • MB30SD

No social media… I have a company and a rep to protect. But I might take a pic neck down for you perverts

    • Waffle

it’s really to get fingered in a dress. Beware!

      • MB30SD

        That’s my plan

  • BearDown100393

This weekend and next. Awesome. Looking forward to next season even more so when the Bears rejoin the playoffs with a first round bye. The league is on notice.

    • willbest

I think the NFCC and AFCC is the best weekend from a football standpoint

  • burntorangenavyblue

Raiders are hungrier than Texans. And Oakland is not easy to play in when they are hot and the fans are going to be rabid crazy. This game is going to be all about which defense will make that huge play or two. 17-10

Detroit and Seattle? Damn that is a tough one….they might as well play rock, paper, scissors. Since it’s at Seattle, just gonna go with them. 6-3. Field goal game.

    But what do I know?

    • CanadaBear

The AFC game is in Houston.

      • Huge Bears Penis

well that is certainly something he did not know.

        • burntorangenavyblue

Haha, yep. Too early in the morning for me!

          • burntorangenavyblue

Being a new dad, I have rarely been following sports much lately, but I wouldn’t have it any other way

  • burntorangenavyblue

    Btw Jeff,

You would hinge your bet on the fact there’s no way the Browns would draft a QB….THE BROWNS!

However, you also at the same time are confident that the Bears should look into a QB from B.F.E. whose draft analysis that was provided instills no confidence in any reader whatsoever, but are confused about reading the article about Watson from Clemson.

You are all over the place! Twitter makes you twat crazy stuff man

    • willbest

Twitter is a place for stream of thought, not coherent arguments.

      • SC Dave

        That’s pretty clear.

        • dave

          • Scharfinator

            Say what?

  • willbest

Oh its time for my annual bitching that ESPN gets playoff games. Plus I got shit to do tonight, so I don’t think I will even catch the Seahawks-Lions game.

    • BerwynBomber

What is your beef with ESPN getting a game? It is usually (if not always) the opening WC game only (the worst match-up), and they do cover games all year via MNF. I don’t mind the NFL throwing them one.

What I find objectionable is MLB’s set-up where their post-season is covered by networks (TBS and Fox), which basically haven’t covered baseball all year. Always feels like amateur hour.

      • willbest

My beef is I don’t have cable, and except when the Bears play on monday night (and its broadcast locally anyway), I am generally not inclined to clear my schedule.

        • BerwynBomber

ESPN’s streaming application is solid. Not quite as good as NBCSports though. What sucks is being unable to stream Fox or CBS, but I presume that is partly due to regional coverage restrictions.

          • http://www.dabearsbeat.com/ Johnathan Wood

to stream ESPN legally you need to have a cable subscription to ESPN. So that wouldn’t help him.

          • dave
          • http://www.dabearsbeat.com/ Johnathan Wood

you’ll notice I specified legally. ESPN streaming on their site.

        • Huge Bears Penis

It is also broadcast on ABC.

  • willbest

Berry making all-pro is a dagger through my dream. They will almost certainly tag him if he can’t work out a deal. Then again they have Dontari Poe coming off his 5th year option so they have two big names to contend with.

    • SC Dave

All any of us can do it wait and see.

      • Scharfinator

Or apply to work at the Bears organization.

    • http://www.dabearsbeat.com/ Johnathan Wood

also, Arizona has stated they’ll use the franchise tag on Chandler Jones over Tony Jefferson if need be, making it likely Jefferson hits the open market.

      • willbest

Well the Chiefs do have cap considerations for next year. They start at $4 million, and they almost certainly will launch Foles for his 10.5 million while keeping a couple million in reserve. That will allow them to sign Berry and their draft class, but they still need to find room for Poe.

The next obvious person is Jammal Charles. A 30 year old often injured RB is not worth $7 million and he has no dead money, so he is gone. If they backload Poe they can fit him on $7 million.

But if they are forced to tag Poe then things get ugly.

        • MB30SD

          Let’s hope

    • BerwynBomber

Berry strikes me as a guy, especially given what he went thru, that might stay loyal to his “home” team, though I’m sure a ton of teams will come knocking if he ain’t tagged, including TEN, which could be a preliminary favorite due to his collegiate connection.

    • AlbertInTucson

Berry JUST turned 28. Worthy investment.

      • dave

Gamble on a QB or gamble on a proven impact player who will make everybody on the D better? SPEND THAT MONEY!!!!!

    • AlbertInTucson

Poe DOES have that nice jump shot.

  • BerwynBomber

DET seems like a good bad team whereas SEA seems like a bad good team, which means they should be separated by less than 7.5.

I’m taking the Lions and the points.

Can’t tell if this is a new bot or a new friend…

      • dave

The only “new bot” which would interest me would be another Old Style, pure brewed from God’s country, but those were the days, just like the $4/case Huber Bock.

Nope, it’s for real. Just hope I did not jinx if for me next year.

        Enjoy!!!

        • Huge Bears Penis

These new bots are pretty convincing.

          • dave

Beer cred, Bear cred, it’s all good.

          • dave

Now let’s all get together to work a deal with Cleveland for the number three. They have a ton of picks we could use without putting all our eggs in one Kevin White basket. I’m really happy with what we can get in the second, third and fourth rounds to build competition where it is needed. Hell, pay the big bux to a PROVEN S and maybe even a PROVEN OT. Then wheel granny out to play QB.

        • AlbertInTucson

          And “Fully Kreusened”,too.

          • dave

Don’t know if they really did that in the modern era. I brew and kreusening by home brewers is adding your unfermented wort back before you bottle so that you get a second fermentation in the bottle to produce your carbonation, like with champagne. That is what causes so many bottles to explode with bathtub brewers using sugar.

            Ain’t life grand?

          • AlbertInTucson

“If the Bears keep doing what they’re doing – build defense & power
run game – they won’t need QB to carry them. See: Cowboys, Dallas.” – Jeff

    Um… Dak Prescott

    67% completition
    8 yards per attempt
    23 TDs
    4 INTs
    PR 105
QBR 82.6 (3rd highest in NFL)

He also has 5!!! 4th quarter comebacks and 5 game winning drivers. That means Dallas was down entering the 4th quarter 5 times this season and won the game. So yes they have had to rely on him when the chips were down. By contrast Aaron Rodgers only has 10 in his entire career (Culter has 21).

I get the idea of putting great pieces around him like Seattle did with Wilson, makes things much easier for a QB but lets not pretend that Prescott has been anything short of impressive this season.

    • dave

Need I point out that Dak Prescot was taken in the fourth round and Jordan Howard in the fifth?

Compelling evidence, IMHO, in support of trading out of the first round for quantity in the second, third or fourth.

      • willbest

You are not the most mathematically inclined if you take 2 data points from 1 draft and decide that is compelling.

        • dave

          Kevin White?

          • willbest

You serious? There are 3 all pros from the first 2 rounds of that draft and 5 probowlers in the top 10 picks and you would trade down for a shot at the 2 players of note outside the top 2 rounds?

          • dave

I only see two impact players the Bears should consider using that third pick on, Garret or Allen. They might still get one even trading down one or two picks. But I do not see any other player at any other position having the same impact such as would satisfy the risk/reward ratio. Cody Whitehair just fixed 80% of all the questions about the O line, even losing Long at the end of the year. His play calling even with Larson in anchored the middle. Similarly, another pass rusher on the DL would be a game change. The only other place where I see that kind of impact would be an Eric Barry with half of that impact coming with his experience and ability to raise the level of the kids we’ve got as DB’s, many of whom have potential. (Ie. Deondre Hall who could be a real jewel.) What else do we need? OT x 2, DE, LB’s and a PROJECT QB.

          • willbest

Have you done extensive film study on the consensus top 50 prospects to come to this conclusion or is it just a gut feeling?

          • dave

Ok, who would you pick with the 3 other than Allen or Garret?

          • willbest

Don’t know. I don’t even know if I take them. The other Dave thinks Barnett could be the best player in the draft. I haven’t seen measurables on any of them. Maybe Hooker grades out better than Thomas when the dust settles.

Just seems silly to just call it a 2 person draft and everybody else is just punching lotto tickets based on 10 minutes of YouTube highlights

          • dave

I’m suggesting needs and wants vs. risk reward.

        • dave

          Cody Whitehair?

          • willbest

And? you want 3 shots at Cody whitehair and no shots at Vic Beasley or 1 shot at Beasley and 1 shot at WH? It’s a no brainer.

      • willbest

All pros are found early. Especially at certain positions http://www.si.com/nfl/audibles/2012/03/30/what-do-all-pro-teams-tell-us-about-nfl-draft

      • Huge Bears Penis

damn that’s compelling. QBs like Romo, Warner, Moon were never drafted, that’s pretty compelling evidence that we should just trade all our picks away for proven players then grab a bunch of UDFA to fill out the roster, especially for QB.

    • BerwynBomber

Yeah, that seemed a silly tweet. Prescott was in the ideal situation. But to suggest he was merely being carried sells him short.

P.S. Wilson never had the pieces Prescott has. Not the O-line nor anything close to Dez and Whitten his first few years. But obviously he had a fantastic D.

P.S.2. To a degree, Cutty had this type of set-up a few times in the first part of his career with us. But it was more rock-solid D, fantastic STs, and an excellent all around back in Forte.

      • A7Xthebest

How can you compare Prescotts situation to Cutler’s and then invert the circumstances completely?

  • BerwynBomber

Horrible O game plan from OAK. Putting your young QB in third and longs because of predictable, conservative play-calling is the worst thing you can do.

Saw a game like this in R-berger’s rookie year. PIT hosted NE for the AFCC and R-berger had been a bit sketchy in their division round win. So Cowher (and his OC) pounded Bettis into the line every first and second down and Belichick knew exactly what they were doing. Hence, R-berger was in third and longs all day and couldn’t do shit.

Ah, a first down pass. And it gets 15. There you go.

    • dave

Need to post that again the next time someone complains about Jordan Howard not getting the ball on every down.

  • dave

Clowney just set up an easy score. Defense, defense, defense!

  • Scharfinator

As a S. Carolina grad, I’m glad to see Clowney coming on. I was thinking he’d be a bust.

    • dave

That next level for the big uglies sometimes takes a little more time.

    • CanadaBear

You never know after missing a couple of years. Maybe it will be the same for White. Seems unlikely but that just could be my Bears pessimism kicking in.

  • Waffle

    Osweiler is bad. Impotent.

If Oakland can use specials and D to keep decent field position they could win. Osweiler is that inept. With a number 1 D in the league they are 9-7.

    • BerwynBomber

Problem is, beside starting a rook in Cook, OAK’s D has been below average all year.
Oz should be able to move HOU. And yeah, I think he sucks too.

  • BerwynBomber

    There you go, baby!

I so want to see Oz and HOU go down.

  • Waffle

    Lol Oz.

  • BerwynBomber

C’mon, Crabtree. Christ. Help out the rook.

Halftime question for the blog: Other than Myles Garret or Jonathan Allen (my two choices), who, if anyone, would you take at number three for da Bears in the first round?

    • Huge Bears Penis

Hooker or Adams. At this time,I would not blame POX for taking one of the QBs Trubisky,Kiser, or Watson since it is a position of need. I will admit I have not taken the time to research any of the QBs yet.

      • Waffle

Ha, not a position of need. We dont “need” an unproven commodity, unknown above average college qb.

We KNOW our dB’s suck penis. Years of penis swallowing by that group. Hooker it is.

        • Huge Bears Penis

I said I would not blame POX for taking one, not saying I would be happy with it. Eventually we will “need” to take an unproven commodity at QB.

          • BerwynBomber

We need to now. (Hell, we should have in ’15 or ’16.) Even if we keep Cutler another year, it is insane not to have a development guy behind him.

It took Danny White and Steve Young a few years to develop as well. I think this is a problem in today’s NFL, qbs aren’t developed like they used to be.

      • Huge Bears Penis

especially since very few colleges run a “Pro-style” offense.

  • BerwynBomber

Caldwell should have declined. Would have taken loss of downs vs. loss of yards.

    • AlbertInTucson

      Agree.

Too many ways to get an automatic first down, regardless of the distance.

      • BerwynBomber

Well, if it is ten or more penalty yards I take the penalty. But first and fifteen vs. second and ten, I’ll take the latter if I’m on D.

  • BearDown100393

Stafford is absolutely useless. Enough about the finger. He cannot throw. End of story.

    • Waffle

      Fingers can be important.

        Yeeees they caaan… Giggity giggity!

          • Waffle

I sense the pain of an awkward past experience in your post.

          • Johnnywad

            ………it was just a phase.

          • MB30SD

I ALWAYS check before I play.

…Wait what, I don’t live in Thailand man. It’s just San difuckingego. You must live in a rough part of town?

    • AlbertInTucson

Sorry, have to give him some slack.

      That finger is an issue.

  • willbest

    That was a catch

    • BearDown100393

      ODB has been bested.

    • Waffle

My wallet boner confirms a catch.

  • Waffle

Ha, oh hell naw with that catch. Highlight reel. Also going for it on 4th and goal and passing? Too ballsy for me.

  • willbest

    Detroit being Detroit

    • BearDown100393

That was beyond stupid. Gym Shorts tribute stuff there.

    Agreed.

        Ain’t that the truth.

  • madscout12

Fuck the Lions, but they can’t get a call tonight.

    • AlbertInTucson

      They haven’t helped themselves much.

They drop balls like they play for the Bears.

      • madscout12

AND they can’t run the ball for shit. 3rd and 1 and you don’t even think of running it?

        Also PI is PI.

    • BearDown100393

      Boldin is special.

The Lions are who we thought they were.

    The Lions.

The original quote is from the Simpsons Arnold knockoff character. I don’t know where the modified one came from

          • MB30SD

Jes, watched it last night with the kids.

  • BearDown100393

    Stafford is useless.

    • Waffle

I feel like I should write him a thank you note or something.

  • BerwynBomber

Rush D, stupid penalties, and drops have killed DET tonight. Thought they would make this closer. They could have.

      • willbest

Lions D has been good this year, they just decided the season ended 4 weeks ago apparently.

  • Waffle

Ok, house has been put on Pit/GB parlay. I’m banking on a rapist and our biggest enemy to bring home a huge haul. If I lose it’s because either a rapist or Rodgers lost. I can live with that. If I win the money almost doubles again and then I put the fucking hotel on the Patriots to be the AFC champ.

Then the 911 is mine and the wife can say not a word about it!!! Victory is near.

    • Irish Sweetness

      Winning!

      • Waffle

even a blind squirrel finds nut once in a while.

  • Waffle

Hey guys, who votes on the NFL MVP?

  • Johnnywad

I have just checked Facebook and I have been able to confirm that it was, in fact, the refs that decided the Lions game. Who knew that was coming?

    • willbest

Lions did get jobbed on 3 critical no calls. I didn’t catch the whole game but they also had 2 inexcusable penalties. And what felt like 6 dropped passes.

      • Waffle

1.Collingsworth was wrong. That “facemask” on the TD was a good no call since the guy was getting mugged and didn’t impair the defenders ability to break up the pass.
2.Russell Wilson did not block that guy in the back. Th dude turned his back like a bitch.
3.can’t think of third because I had 3 zombies in m but nothing happened bad enough to make me hate the NFL so we will will all have to get over it.

  • Irish Sweetness

Wow. I can’t remember seeing a QB as bad as Connor Cook.

    • MB30SD

Check some of Cutler’s lowlights mate. Pretty easy task actually

      • Waffle

        NO

      • Irish Sweetness

Hahahaha… I thought I’d only catch Irish in my little net, but lookin whaaat we have heeeereeeee!

I am going to continue to troll you until you fucking cave in and join us with jetpax. I know you can rip out $300 from your winnings and not even feel a thing.

I know you still have flashbacks about that little dirty alley in that African boarder town and the flash of my gold motherfucking AK, but put that behind you and come on down with rabbit, shady, GP, and the angel of death… ME!!

    • Waffle

sadly, i can remember 5 from the Bears in the last few years.

      • MB30SD

        Cutler
        HOYER… Wait scratch this one, he’s 4 X 300/2/0
        Barkley
        Skunk?
        Collins

        I always liked the skunk

        • Huge Bears Penis

          who was skunk?

          • MB30SD

            Campbell

        • willbest

I would be remiss if I didn’t point out that

Connor Cook’s playoff stats of 18/45 161 yards 1 TD and 3 INTs

are better than Brian Hoyers playoff stats of 15/34 for 136 yards NO TD’s and 4 INTs

So we have conclusive proof that Hoyer is a worse QB than Cook.

          • MB30SD

Ancient history and a one game sample size. They’re both going to the HOF!!!

          • willbest

Ancient history is 1 year? Hoyer went from a $7 mil low end starter to a cheap back on that game. It’s why the Texans launched him and got Oz and how Pace got him for a song. He has no TWTW. It’s what pisses me off about the desire to have him QB1. He has failed at it 3 times already

          • MB30SD

I don’t want him as qb1, I want a 3 or 4 man cage match to determine the arrangement of mod-level back up QBs will bridge us to next year’s draft where we should mortgage the farm to get the best QB in a strong draft class… Using this year’s off season to built a top 10 D and specials and plug some remaining gaps on O.

There’s my 2 year plan boychick. Enjoy!

  • MB30SD

Dave, what makes a man pull for a hated rival over one of the league’s best looking’bears-style’ defenses.

I think you need to do a little soul searching my man. Deep deep soul searching.

    • willbest

I hate the seachickens. I have family in Seattle. The 12th man shit is unbearable.

I was indifferent to this game though because the Lions didn’t kick GB in the jollies when they had the chance. So fuck them too.

      • Big Mike

Fuck all of them. Monsters are coming.. 2017.

      • MB30SD

Kinda love that D… Nay, most certainly love it… And those light up green unis. The rest of the team, whatevs.

Also love Pete, easily one of the best overall NFL coaches

  • SC Dave

Delay on the Lions game… their recievers Suck.

  • Rack ’em (GP)

Detroit game on DVR, went through it in 20m.

What a waste of space Detroit is. They, at no time, had anything close to being competitive out there. Jones Jr on the crosser was the only O they had, it was pathetic.

Waffle is going to collect on his QBs who find their best selves in bathroom stalls parlay tomorrow.
