Why I’m Going to Bears v. Browns Tomorrow

| December 23rd, 2017

New York Times theatre critic Frank Rich once wrote of the infamous Broadway bomb Moose Murders: “FROM now on, there will always be two groups of theatergoers in this world: those who have seen ”Moose Murders,” and those who have not.” I’m beginning to wonder if the same won’t be said for those attending Bears v. Browns at Soldier Field tomorrow.

Tomorrow is Christmas Eve and I’ll be spending three plus hours of it on the lakefront, in a cold and windy stadium, watching a dead-on-arrival home side play the only team in the sport significantly worse than they are. So the only relevant question is…why? Why would a human being do this?

I’m not a huge fan of attending live football games. The television timeouts are excruciating. The bathroom lines are worse. And while I like drinking beer and watching a ballgame I don’t like paying double-digits for an MGD while trying to navigate thousands of jagoffs who’ve been slamming booze in a parking lot since the wee small hours of the morning.

However, with a good seat, that unlike tomorrow usually costs A LOT of cash, you can experience elements of the game that are impossible to gauge on television. The size and speed of the players. The shear violence of the impacts. The game moves at a different pace live than it does with the distance of a two-dimensional, 52″ rectangle.

But there is one real reason I’m going: Mitch Trubisky. I want to see him live. I want to see how he conducts himself in pregame workouts. I want to see how he interacts with teammates on the sideline. I want to see how that fastball of his looks in person. Anybody who reads this site or follows me on Twitter knows I have not been as excited about a young player since starting this site in 2005. And I don’t want to have gone his entire rookie campaign without having seen him with my own eyes.

So I’m going. Bears v. Browns. Christmas Eve. Maybe it’s to see Trubisky. Or maybe it’s because I never saw Moose Murders.

Enjoy, Jeff. May Jordan Howard rush for 250, the freak run back 2 kicks, and Shaheen catch 10 passes.

    • Bear Instincts

May it be so in the name of Hala and the 85

    • Big Mike

For Jeff my Christmas wish in the following order is a sweep of the AFC North, Trubisky 25-30 for 300+ yards 3 TDs, no picks.

      • Dis Guy Trublinsky

I too, would like to see this wish granted.

  • BearDown100393

    You know what?

    I like this post.

    A lot.

Go and enjoy the game. Forget about the record. Ignore the vast rows of empty seats.

    Have fun.

I expect the Bears to beat the Browns.

  • Big Mike

I love going to football games. If I were in Chicago, I would go to this game. I would get a 50 yard line 200 level seat. (covered and they have “heaters” overhead. The athleticism of the guys who “suck” is amazing. The show within the show, receivers downfield, interior line blocking ( I bring binoculars and focus on the LOS on some plays, you can always watch the replay if anything breaks out) the sideline demeanor and everything Jeff just said. Growing up a Cubs fan, the even was rarely about the post-season, it was about winning the day you were there, but also about being there.

Unless it was Bulliwnkle that had to be scary and hurt like hell.

        “Fan mail from some flounder?”

        • CanadaBear

          I loved that show!

          • AlbertInTucson

Likewise. I have several seasons on DVD.

From Jay Ward and Bill Scott who also gave us GEORGE OF THE JUNGLE and HOPPITY HOOPER.

    • AlbertInTucson

+1 for the MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL reference.

  • CanadaBear

Final injury report. I think McMannis might be the only one of the bunch that plays.

Chicago Bears final injury report vs. Cleveland: DOUBTFUL — guard Josh
Sitton (ankle). QUESTIONABLE — tight end Adam Shaheen (chest), guard
Tom Compton (concussion) and safety Chris Prosinski (concussion). CB
Sherrick McManis (illness) returned to practice on Friday.

If Jeff did talk to half the bartenders in Chicago, he’s really back to drinking!

Glad you’re having a good time Jeff. Bring home a winner!

    • BearDown100393

      I hope he really didn’t

    • DaBearsBlog

I only took 8 weeks off.

      • CanadaBear

I know. Just giving ya the gears. Are you doing another 8-week sabbatical in 2018?

  • CanadaBear

I always had shitty seats at Soldier Field. Usually in the end zone. I liked to watch the line play from there. You can really see the blocking setting up. Other than that, the seats totally sucked but the game experience was usually fun. The 3-hour drive home (after you got out of the city) sucked moose wang.

2005? Holy hell, it seems like this place has been around a lot longer than 12 years.
Merry Christmas Blogfather, have fun tomorrow.

    • Still a Doug Plank Fan

Indeed. I remember being on the original site…the changes through the years have been extraordinary.

No longer interested in supporting 5th grade educated racist ‘kneebro’ millionaires.

    • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

      huh?

      • Dis Guy Trublinsky

Back away slowly. And close the door tightly behind you. Don’t look back.

    • AlbertInTucson

      Hasta la vista.

      • kurt6009

You seem awful happy to be a politically correct castrated, feminized, lady boy that adores 5th grade educated boys getting paid millions of dollars to play a kids game. I’m guessing you’re one of those low IQ face painters enjoying those end zone seats imploring them to throw their jockstrap to you after the game.

I’m sure you idolize the black Hamite man (as does your wife/girlfriend) because TV tells you to.

Interestingly enough most of these ‘kneebros’ will be broke within a few years after their careers are over (Allen Iverson).

You, on the other hand, will find another 85 IQ’ed (just 10 points above slight mental retardation) player to adore.

        • AlbertInTucson

Your post regarding me demonstrates complete, utter, laughable ignorance.

    • BearDown100393

      I want him as a strengthening/training coach.

      • Dis Guy Trublinsky

That can only be explained through pharmaceutical science.

        • BearDown100393

Nobody trains harder in the NFL.

          Nobody.

          • CanadaBear

That’s what steroids do for ya. Give you an incredible amount of energy, put you in a black mood and you have to work out to work it off a little bit.

    • AlbertInTucson

Per Pro Football Reference, he has 1 sack and 3 tackles all season, all of which came in 1 game, and he only dressed for 5 games.

  • BerwynBomber

Kinda figures BAL would blow this once they dropped two INTs on IND’s last drive. Could have closed out the game.

    • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

I think they dropped about 5 possible INTs the whole game.

  • BerwynBomber

BAL makes a late RZ stop to seal it.

  • SC Dave

Oh fuck… i was doing great, and then some geezer comes in and now I have to hear these assholes babbling about this game.

  • BearDown100393
  • BearDown100393

    Meaningless Packers football before Christmas.

    Perfect.

  • Irish Sweetness

Okay so this Fangio name keeps appearing in front of me.

    Can anyone explain WHY?

    • BearDown100393

Because it is an alternate F word not “Fox”

      • Irish Sweetness

That’s a large group of people. I’m desirous of a reason why folk thinks this guy is capable of leading a football team when his approach to Defense, for example, is ball-less, toothless, and hair-less.

Not trolling, I genuinely don’t see what people see in him that would qualify him to be a HC. IMO he fails miserably as a DC. Let’s start from there. Who thinks he’s done a good job as DC, and why? Specifically, what has he done?

        • BearDown100393

I leave it up to the new HC to pick his coordinators.

        • Dis Guy Trublinsky

To be clear, I have no skin in this game. If he goes he goes. If he stays, I’m fine with that too, as a DC.

He’s currently coaching the Bears D which is the 8th ranked defense in the NFL. He’s doing that with what has been a pretty anemic offense this far, putting the D at a big disadvantage. Ask yourself what he’s doing that with. Fuller is a first rounder. Floyd, whom you don’t even really like, is a first rounder. Just about everybody else is a journeyman outside of Hicks.

Remember how far this D has come in less than three seasons. Remember that it was Mel Tucker getting T bagged with 50 burgers. That’s not so long ago.

Prior to that, it was the Niners. There for a few years under Fangio, that D was absolutely ferocious. It was amongst the best in the NFL.

So I’ll ask you, if that’s not enough to go on, what specifically do you want from your DC?

          • BearDown100393

If whomever hired as new HC wants Fangio, so be it.

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

27 sacks a game. Blitzing on every down even when they are not on field. hell they should blitz at halftime.

  • Irish Sweetness

This Hundley guy looks okay – I’ve read nothing but bad things about him on the blog. Minny’s D is pretty stout I thought?

    Edit:

    Throws terrible interception.

    • BearDown100393

That red zone pic was pure #4.

      • AlbertInTucson

        By Harrison Smith.

Another guy the Bears didn’t need.

  • BearDown100393

Mike Zimmer is apparently following the Grimace Diet.

  • BearDown100393

Tony Dungy is hands down the least informative commentator in pro football.

    • AlbertInTucson

But he IS the most self-righteous.

  • BearDown100393

    Hundley is turrible.

  • BearDown100393

Green Bay should fire Thompson and Grimace after tonight’s disgrace.

And then hire Emery/Hobo to develop Hundley.

  • AlbertInTucson

    “Why I’m going…”

You’re talking to a guy who went to see them play in Wrigley in 1969 when they were 0-7 on their way to 1-13.

Against a Steeler team that was ALSO on its way to 1-13.

So, for me anyway, no explanation necessary.

    • AlbertInTucson

P.S: My Christmas Tree is decorated INCLUDING Bears ornaments.

      • Dis Guy Trublinsky

Well, it is a time of tradition. And half of them are miserable. Like massive gatherings of my in laws.

It’s probably best we all just continue to grind it out.
