Today Is the Most Important Day of the Current Regime

| March 6th, 2017

Today is the most day of the regime of Ryan Pace and John Fox because they are finalizing their plans at the quarterback position.

Forget the 40 times and other underwear Olympic events. The Bears needed to sit down and have face-to-faces with the likes of DeShone Kizer, DeShaun Watson and Mitchell Trubisky. They learned what makes these guys tick; got a feeling of thee young quarterbacks’ general football knowledge.

Forget all the rumors you have heard. The Bears could not have determined how much they wanted to spend on a free agent quarterback — or how much to give up in a trade — until they knew what the draft was offering them. Today the Bears are as ready as they’ll ever be to determine the direction of the franchise.

While they can’t sign anybody until Thursday, the free agency negotiating period begins Tuesday. Today the Bears are deciding what their best course of action is. They’ll decide if the draft has someone they love or if they should offer more in an attempt to trade for Jimmy Garoppolo. They could also decide there isn’t a franchise quarterback available to them and sign a veteran with the hopes he’d allow them to kick the can down the road one more year.

Personally, I think they have some good options with at least four potential franchise quarterbacks available. After all the work I’ve done evaluating available QBs in 2017 here’s how I would rank the options:

1. Deshaun Watson

2. Jimmy Garoppolo

3. Mitchell Trubisky

4. Deshone Kizer

5. Tyrod Taylor

6. Tony Romo

7. Jay Cutler

8. Patrick Mahomes

9. Brian Hoyer

10. Colin Kaepernick

No Mike Glennon. We’d take Frodo of the Nine Fingers over that giraffe-necked Glennon.

    • MB30SD

      It’s 2017, just FYI…

    • Sahr Gborie

      Glennon-cide

  • willbest

You mean the last chance for the Bears to dodge Glennon?

  • Sahr Gborie

Yes to Kaepernick!!! Dump Fox nxt year!!! Hire Jim Harbaugh!!!

    • willbest

F that noise. Cancer he is.

      • Sahr Gborie

1 – He said he will stand from now on.

2 – We just need a transition QB that will not cost more than 12mil and can actually compete.

        • willbest

Why do you think Kaep will make less than $12 million?

          • Sahr Gborie

Who else will give him more. As you said: “Cancer he is.”

          • willbest

It just seems the market rate for borderline starting QBs these days.

          • Sahr Gborie

if you don’t like Kaepernick then might as well stick with Cutler. Hes set to make a base of 12 mil in 17 and beyond.

          • willbest

I am not #CutlerNOMORE. If we aren’t using our #3 on a QB, I think its kind of silly to move on from Cutler unless somebody is going to give us 3rd round pick for him.

          • MB30SD

sometimes you do things for reasons other than fiscal logic.

It’s a regime and culture thing. Look what happened to Fitz after they publicly shopped him. He sucked (yes I know he sucked before but he sucked harder after)

We’re done with each other and I think if he stays it’ll be ugly on the field.

          • willbest

You might be right about that. Cutler forgave the first shopping as being just business. But this is the second time, he might consider it personal. Then again, he has don’t give a fuck money and a wife and 3 kids. Very different from the guy that pissed of McDouche and sulked in the NFCN

          • MB30SD

Right, if I was being treated like this and I had fu money a naggy reality show wife and 3 kids to go along with my now chronic injuries… to my fucking throwing hand AND shoulder… I’d retire yesterday and tell erraone to suck my gun-slinging cock.

            But that’s just me

          • BearDown100393

Gunslingers leave the battlefield on their shields.

          • MB30SD

They also leave wins on the field

          • Waffle

Ugh, no, McDaniels is the one that played bitch in that situation because he was trying to be all mini Belichek about it and failed. He’s already admitted to handling the situation wrong. Read about it.

          • Sahr Gborie

regime and culture things – amen

          • Sahr Gborie

Would you give up a 3rd round for Cutty?

          • MB30SD

I wouldn’t give up a ham sangwitch and a coke for that strip-sack INT specialist.

I think he should retire because his game is going to get worse every year with all the injuries and butt hurt piling up.

          • willbest

If I were the Cardinals I would. Houston too if I had a way out of Oz’s contract. Maybe they frame him with some hookers and blow. Vikings if somebody looks at Sam Bradford’s ACL in training camp. The Jets now that I got rid of Marshall.

          • Sahr Gborie

Just because a team in trash does not mean that they are willing to take on our trash!

          • Irish Sweetness

In week 2 or 3 when my #1 has broken his leg … and then some.

      • Irish Sweetness

        He can play ball.

    • SC Dave

      Fuck Kaep.

    • MB30SD

Jimmy h coming home is the wet dream I’ve been pimping for about a couple years. I don’t think it is even a reasonable dream until 2 years after he wins the nat champion.

Once he does that, the cherry will be popped and they’ll be less willing to take all his bullshit.

      Like me aft… Never mind

    • leftcoastdave

Hairball (as we affectionately called him when he was not winning) has already died and gone to heaven. What can be better than being the King over there across the lake in Michigan? He would give that up to take the crap being spewed daily by the media coaching in the NFL? How many dollars are enough?
Maybe later, if he gets bored or things sour with his program, but look at the many “lifers” coaching college football and compare quality of life with the NFL.

      • Sahr Gborie

A good coach is like a good QB…pay whatever is necessary. Would you not give up our entire draft class for BELICHICK OR BRADY or HARBAUGH?

        HARBAUGH 4YRS with 49ers
        2011: 13 & 3 – LOST NFC CHAMPIONSHIP TO GIANTS
        2012: 11 & 4 – LOST SUPERBOWL XLVII TO RAVENS
        2013: 12 & 4 – LOST NFC CHAMPIONSHIP TO SEAHAWKS
        2014: 8 & 8 – power struggle.everything went down the drain

we can only have wett dreams about 3yrs run like that

        • MB30SD

          Yup

          • DaMurph

It’s the Bears! The only team in the NFL, that if you win the Superbowl, you’ll be set for life! Just look at the 85 Bears!

          • MB30SD

stop that. the ’85 team was different. they are considered the best NFL defense IN HISTORY.

We win a SB and those guys will be styled. We lose one game and pretty much blow everyone out and look like seattle’s D on coke and roids ALL year and yeah, set for life.

        • leftcoastdave

You are assuming that more money would motivate him to give up the quality of life he is living. It might. He has a newborn baby boy, his son Jay is on his coaching staff at Michigan and his pay is $9m/year.
If you were him, would you give up what he’s got for the NFL meatgrinder?

          • Sahr Gborie

Every football coach on the plan desire to coach on the grandest stage of them all: NFL.

            Reasons to come back:
            1. Get revenge on the 49ers
            2. Coach for the team he played on as a player
            3. Win at the highest level of his profession

Pay him and his so whatever he wants because of what he did with the 49ers in 2011, 2012 & 2013. This is a guy whose past performance is a predictor of future success!. BOOM!!!

    • DaMurph

Chicago fans would hate this cocksucker!

      • Sahr Gborie

        WHY?

        • DaMurph

They hate Kap and would tolerate him if he wins but not embrace him. But I don’t see home winning a championship.

  • MB30SD

    I go:

    1. Jimmy g
    2. HOYER da DESTROYER
    3. Tyrod
    4. Kap

    Watson.

Watson doesn’t get a number because he’s not an NFL QB and we not only have no idea how good he’ll be, but we have zero business using a #3 on this year’s crop (crap?) When we KNOW there’ll be much better options next year.

But MB (you retort), we’ll win at least 6 games next year (if not 8) and will be in the middle of the draft?!

I don’t fucking care… Use everything you need to, to get that guy next year. If all we come out of the next year’s draft with is our franchise QB and one of the top 2 or 3 wrs, I’ll be fucking ecstatic.

… This is all premised on the assumption pace goes ape shit superstar in FA this year and next, and hits a D home run in the draft, doing something like:
    1 hooker/Adams/best cb
    2 best DB/lb/dl
    3. Best dl/TE/DB/lb
    4. Best of position not taken yet
    4b. ”

    • Sahr Gborie

we have zero business using a #3 on this year’s crop (crap?) – COULD NOT AGREE MORE!!!

      • MB30SD

        I KNOW THIS ALREADY!!!!!

    • what do you give up for garopazorp?

      • MB30SD

        2nd

        • Waffle

          lunacy.
Please don’t make me mention how many interceptions we had this year.

          • MB30SD

why? if he was in the draft this year, you wouldn’t take him in the 2nd?

          • Waffle

I’m going to name a list of players below. I will ask that you inform me on a scale of 1 to 5 of how much vomit started traveling up your esophagus (5 being the amount of puke that would come up if you ate rotten cat):
            Deonte Thompson
            Daniel Braverman
            Cam Meredith
            Nerdecker
Dan Brown (who the fuck is Dan Brown?)
Logan Paulsen the human fucking penalty flag
            Unrein (as a DT)
            Ferguson
            Cornwash
            Amos
            Banks
            Bush
            DHC
            Hall
            Demontre Hurst
            HJQ
            Cretin LeBanks
            Prosinski (WHITE POS)
            DaVante Bausby
            Jacoby glenn
so to conclude, pick some fucking D backs and buy some vet D Backs and fire some of these guys that are not NFL caliber guys yet still play on the Bears. Pick up another DT, DE, TE, etc.
            QB is NEXT YEAR.

          • Huge Bears Penis

            0 for BRAVERMAN!

          • Sahr Gborie

but hes not in the draft. he has been used and is going to ask for a lot of money. give me a rookie i can mold/build around and will be cheap for a few years

          • MB30SD

this year? Um, no thanks. I’d MUCH rather take that risk with next year’s crop.

        • Pats want AT LEAST a first for Jimmy G, so no, not happening

          • MB30SD

yes, he asked me what I would give for him. I answered.

        • Sahr Gborie

          crazy

          • MB30SD

            you!

    • Huge Bears Penis

You gave Hoyer a number and he’s not an NFL QB???

      • MB30SD

        300/2/0 X 4.

That sounds more NFL than cutlers numbers last year… no?

        • Huge Bears Penis

          Fluke,
136/0/4/2 don’t sound like NFL QB numbers.

          • MB30SD

4 x?!? That’s not a fluke. One set of numbers from one high pressure game against a playoff opponent sounds MUCH more fluke to me.

          • Huge Bears Penis

on many players you have stated I just use the eye test. well it clear that you did not watch a lot of games, because anyone watching can tell you how bad he really is.

          • MB30SD

Again, I don’t think he’s a great QB, he’s just the easiest choice in my mind.

And the fact that he protects the ball is so appealing because we’ve had 8 years of the diametric opposite.

I just don’t want pace to use picks or spend any more than he has to on the position this year. Spend it ALL on the other missing parts.

            Then go big next year

    • Tortured Bear fan

I have a feeling that Watson would be the chosen one.

    • Watson keeps impressing.

Like in the field drills he looked very comfortable, like a guy who carried his team to two championships vs the best D in college.

But two things keep me from buying in.

      His 17Ints
      His mickey mouse offense

Don’t know if his “it” can overcome the learning curve of mastering an NFL style playbook.

By now, going behind center, 3,5-7 step drops, turning back to D should be instinctive.

      • MB30SD

agree on all. he just looks way too much like RG IV to me.

    • Irish Sweetness

Wouldn’t Mr. Hoyer be the one who isn’t an NFL QB?

Cutty and Shaw signed up .. .I don’t think we’ll be seeing him again.

      • MB30SD

Suuuure. Give me cutty vs HOYER number last season again please.

Thought so… Now which set doesn’t look like the NFL QB again?

Right. Glad we got that worked out.

  • Thompson Way

Number 2 & 3 are the only ones with any “polish”. Best to kick the can down the road one more year. Glennon might be just a little better than Hoyer. Hopefully, we never find out.

    • MB30SD

      Is that the… Thompson way?

      • MB30SD

        Get it?

        • Sauron’s right eyeball

          No?

          • MB30SD

            Sigh.

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

Lol. Not really. I mean yes!

        • Johnnywad

You tried. It’s all you can do.

  • Thompson Way

P.S. The picture of Ryan Pace and John Fox above should tell you something. !) Fox is to comfortable and knows he is retiring soon, and 2) Pace is focused, eager to pay attention and learn. To me this says we need to look forward beyond Fox to the next coach that is on par with Pace.

    • willbest

The photo was from the 2015 combine I believe or East-West game.

      • MB30SD

It’s very very telling will. And it’s the Thompson way.

    • Sahr Gborie

LoL….very observant….the young lion is alert and observant while the old man is ready to move on to greener pastures…the circle of life

    • what you don’t know is that the picture was taken 2 minutes after Fox dropped the kids off at the pool. he’d been holding it in for 4 hours, so you can imagine the intense feelings of relaxation he’s feeling.

      • Huge Bears Penis

It looks like Pace just had a turtle head sneak up on him and he is a little worried that he was going to have to go into the shitter after Fox destroyed it.

Biggsy is reporting that Jeffery wants Jones, DT, and Dez money. Good lord, we aren’t willing to pay that?

    http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/football/bears/ct-10-thoughts-nfl-scouting-combine-brad-biggs-20170306-story.html

    • Sahr Gborie

Hello no. He is not worth it.

      1. He has not proven that he can be counted on

      2. We are not winning the playoffs or SB nxt year

we can find someone just as productive and give them $17 mil guaranteed over the nxt 3 years

      • willbest

Jeffery is a top 15 WR. Unless you got them on a rookie contract you won’t get somebody just as productive for $17 million guaranteed.

        • MB30SD

top 15… as in #15. Not dez, jones or dt

          • willbest

And those guys signed contracts 2 years ago. Inflation is a bitch.

          • MB30SD

and so is alshon. no thanks.

        • Sahr Gborie

          Brandin Cooks of the Saints

          • willbest

I am glad you don’t think there will be any James Jones or Greg Jennings effect when he leaves his HoF QB.

          • Sahr Gborie

Not saying there will not be a drop off due to poor qb play. just saying that he was more available than alshon who is asking for 17 but not producing like it. i would give Cooks 17 because he is available and produced like someone deserving of 17 a year

with good/great talent around a rookie qb we could be good. good/great talent can cover up the mistakes rookies are prone to make. alshons leaping ability is a perfect example. but whats the point when will be missing for some games at a time

          • willbest

Biggs says he is asking for 14. That isn’t 17

        • Irish Sweetness

Guarantee you IF we signed Brandon back, he’d be more productive.

          • willbest

Brandon Marshall wasn’t even more productive than Jeffery this year.

Brandon Marshal 2016: 59 catches on 129 targets for 788 yards and 3 TDs in 15 games.
Jeffery 2016: 52 catches on 94 targets for 821 yards and 2 TDs in 12 games.

And you can’t really argue that the Bears had a better QB situation than the Jets.

          • Irish Sweetness

And who was at QB for the Jets? Brandon is up and down a better receiver than AJ.

          • willbest

            Was. Players get old.

          • Sahr Gborie

its time for alshon to take brandon’s tits out of his mouth. its time to put his big boy pants on and start playing like a number 1

Bucs offer Mike Glennon a $15M deal, to make him the highest paid backup QB in the league.

    • Sahr Gborie

      God bless the Bucs

      TAKE IT CHICKEN BOY!!!

      • willbest

Not unless it contained a no trade clause he shouldn’t. Fuck that noise.

    • Saruman for America 2020

Holy crap. That’s great for Glennon, great for us, and great for everyone except the Tampa salary cap.

Who would take a starting job for $12 million when you can be a backup for 25% more? I’d be Sauron’s VP if I got paid more than I did being the President of Isengard!

    • Sauron’s right eyeball

Sounds like they like the young man OR the Glazers are meddling again.

    • Huge Bears Penis

      • Zap Rowsdower (GP)

I am watching tv today home from work. Sick.

So I saw this on NFL Network

    • willbest

That sounds like they offered him 7.5 million a year with 2 years guaranteed. And he absolutely shouldn’t take that unless it had a no trade clause in it. Last thing he needs is to end up starting someplace like Chicago on the cheap with the Bucs rocking our #3 and us with their #19

      • BerwynBomber

Had no idea Chase Daniels made that type of coin. Then again, when a rookie is your starter you can afford to overpay your back-up.

    • AlbertInTucson

Glennon HAS to think “If Tampa’s willing to pay me that to back-up, somebody DESPERATE for a starter is gonna be willing to pay me more.”

  • Zap Rowsdower (GP)
    • Sauron’s right eyeball

Due to make 16 mil with Bears? How much as a FA? 15.9mil? I doubt he takes much of a pay cut.

    • BerwynBomber

Yeah, I’m sure every available QB wants to start for HOU. Hard to look back there. They made the post-season the last two years with Hoyer and Oz.

    • It would make sense, but they’re still charged for Oz which might cripple their cap.

If Glennon fetches $13M + surely Cutler will too, so Texans would have like $30M invested in Cutty/Oz?

that’s a lot of cap for essentially ONE QB since Oz will be riding pine.

Talk about buyer’s remorse over there.

      • willbest

But Cutler is stacked so he doesn’t need his money now. He might be willing to do a 5/20/20 with $30 million guaranteed. Or some sort of signing bonus where they don’t have to pay him this year.

        • BerwynBomber

Agreed. Though I do wonder If PR comes into play for HOU. Selling a combo platter of Oz/Cutty to the fan base could be tough.

        • It would be dumb for Cutler to take less this yr IMO.

He’s an inj prone aging QB who is a borderline backup.

He’s VERY close to the Fitz tier. A few bad games or ANOTHER inj would essentially end his starter career and starter earnings, so he should try to make as much NOW before he inevitably begins wearing headphones on Sundays.

But never know what Cutler really wants. It ranges from him retiring to being ok as a backup to wanting to still start

          • willbest

I didn’t say he was taking less money. His salary will be guaranteed. It will just be structured in a manner that the Texans wouldn’t have to pay him and oz at the same time.

          • So you think the Texans will pay him as much as his current contract the next two years just backloaded?

(also, when stuff is backloaded, the implication is that person will start the following years and has certain bonuses – which Cutler may never reach)

          • willbest

I think its pretty clear the way the market is shaping up, Cutler won’t be making less than $15 million (unless he retires). In fact, he probably wants out of Chicago because he stands to make more someplace else. There is a question on how many years you want to commit to him. But 2 years isn’t brutal anymore.

I am starting to get the feeling the NFLPA did a bad job negotiating the current CBA. The rookie wage scale keeps half the team affordable. There is an oversupply of competent vets keeping that tier at league min, and whats left is a bunch of money being thrown at super stars and QBs

          • Irish Sweetness

Has the guy that signed Osweiler been fired yet?

  • Zap Rowsdower (GP)

    Scouts ripping Hooker’s tackling.

    One scout called it “pathetic”

    • Bender McLugh

not from game day tape. does he mean his angles or lack of wrap-up?

      • MB30SD

def from game tape. Watch an actual game instead of highlights. He is NOT a tackler… like, at ALL. I know, I’m upset too. I found out this weekend.

    • MB30SD

ok, I’m going to trust fall here and be honest with you guys.

I watched 2 games… straight game tape with him highlighted (see below).

His tackling is pathetic. It’s bad. He wants nothing to do with it.

Take a look and tell me what you see:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nH8djJsRGRY

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jyu3PZztTII

I mean, bad. I didn’t want to post it because it was embarrassing bad. I mean just watch 5-10 minutes of each of those raw games above and you’ll be like, OK, I get it. I see it, he’s a leg diver… and a ‘oh i don’t want any of that’ sometimes.

That said, he’s not a SS and we’re not getting him for that, we’re getting him because he’s a mid-fielder ball-hawk… which the tape also shows. So as long as we have a good SS, a good front 7, he’ll be awesome back there. If he’s going to be expected to make all the tackles in the open field to stop TDs… yikes.

      There. I said it.

      • Sauron’s right eyeball

        Was it his last name?

Jamaal Adams, is NOT… afraid of hitting:

Adams @ 3, baker for our second and call it done?

          http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/Budda-Baker?id=2558009

          4.45 40… faaaast.

          • You know I love me some Baker.

            He’s Honey Badger 2.0.

Still say Thomas (Rush) @3 and Baker in 2nd in that reality.

We need a pass rusher opposite Floyd (who is also no sure thing)

          • Irish Sweetness

Have to trade down. Nobody is drafting Adams at #3. 10 or below and he’s yours.

          • MB30SD

Sure, one more time, gotta have someone willing to give you picks. So unless you saw news that I didn’t today, we still only have the #3 pick in the draft. Right?

          • Irish Sweetness

I’m betting somebody wants Kizer or whoever way more than we do. Not buying this ‘2nd round’ stuff. The ‘best’ QBs of a class don’t go in the second. Somenody will pay us.

          • MB30SD

            Would be nice.

Plan for the worst, hope for the bedt

        • DaMurph

That’s what the fuck I’m talking about ATTITUDE!

          • MB30SD

            dude brings it murph

      • That’s one of the reasons why I said Hooker reminded me of Deon (in a good and bad way).

However, HOW inj was Hooker the whole year? Hooker had two injuries, and maybe he didn’t want to tackle cuz of his shoulder (which would then make him inj prone?)

You’re absolutely right. I’ve said from the start that he’s a single high FS that’ll patrol the backend.

Like I said, you want a guy to prevent Jordy Nelson bombs, Hooker is your guy.
You want a guy that’ll do everything else, it’s Adams

If we had a run-heavy division, might go Adams, but this is a QB-WR league, and AP is out (can we even name another HB in our division?)

As such, I still say Hooker over Adams. It’s just very hard for me to justify a SS in the top #5 unless his name is Berry (who is the combination of Hooker/Adams).

We desperately need playmakers in the secondary, and if we want Hooker, will just have to live with his sub-par tackling in hopes that the others will lay the wood before even getting to that level.

Also, Hooker is still young and filling into his body, so maybe a bit more mass can help him out.

        • MB30SD

agree with erra thing in your second half.

But now seeking out and watching actual raw game film of both, sheesh. Adams a fucking stud man. He’s a beast tackling and is pretty rangy.

what if we went adams then baker in the second? there’s your FS/SS combo until baker gets killed by a big TE

          • I’d rather sign SS Jefferson in FA , draft Thomas @#3 and Baker in the 2nd.

And I don’t think Baker will be covering TEs much. (esp if we get Jefferson)

            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pV_nLcoEsyU

It’s not as if there’s any great ones in our division anyways.

          • MB30SD

            i would LOOOVE that plan.

          • Irish Sweetness

            Sounds like a thing.

        • Irish Sweetness

A lot of our problems are solved by trading down methinks. All of this “#3 is too high to draft a …” just goes away. And if you play your cards right and trade down and then trade back in … you can have two safeties.

          But no Leonard.

      • DaMurph

          • willbest

The home he is buying is 2.6 million. The one he is selling is 1.4 million. And its not just the price, the taxes, insurance, and maintenance on house like that is likely to clear $60k a year. And while he will generally be able to sell the house for inflationary gains. 2.6 million homes are far less liquid than 300k homes. Plus then you go about filling the house, and buying cars for the garage, and basically living like you are going to net $5 million a year forever.

The upshot of Glennon not having an agent is there is no legalized tampering period. Everybody has to wait until the 9th to talk to him. That should drive his price down as people like Kaep and Hoyer find homes in the meantime.

Bears signed Brown to a 1 year deal and tendered exclusive rights on Bellamy and Callahan. Which was expected.

Slap me now….but logic behind this, Glennon is going to fetch about $13 mill, what about a flyer on the pansy out of Dallas? He is injury prone, he is a bitch, but he can chuck it and has experience….I would rather have him lined up behind center than Glennon to start next year

    • BerwynBomber

Age, injuries. Otherwise, Romo is by far the best QB available. But he’s a win-now guy.

Jamal Adams plays football like a fucking wolverine, a pitbull mixed with a cheetah. He has a nose for the ball and is always at the bottom of the pile. That guy JUMPS off of the screen. Not the best cover skills but you can’t deny that he simply knows how to play the game and looks like a grown up playing with kids out there. That is what you want in a high draft pick.
Malik Hooker has insane ball skills and a fucking silky smooth fluidity to him. You can’t teach that. Both of these guys will do well at the next level.
I agree with Dreamslayer aka Peesprayer that a guy like Jefferson may be the way to go at Safety and grab one of those two guys to pair up with him.
    OR
fuck it, mortgage the draft to jump back in the first round, grab Adams or Hooker and then pick up Jabrill Peppers at the end of the first. Then just buy vet pieces for the other spots. Ride with Miller and some white guy named Dan Brown at TE….

  • Zap Rowsdower (GP)
    • willbest

Not if the Glennon rumors are true.

      • Huge Bears Penis

why not? Franchise QBs are hard to find, Bears should take every chance possible. Signing Glennon does not prohibit us from drafting someone.

        • BerwynBomber

Exactly. And if Pace is bringing in Glennon as a long-term answer than he is nuts. As a one or two year bridge? Fair enough.

Only NFL QBs available that should be deemed long-term are Jimmy G and Taylor — and even with them it might be smart to hedge. All the rest are short-term starters either because of marginal talent or age/injuries.

        • willbest

One would hope if you are giving somebody $20+ million in guarantee you would think more of them than to draft their replacement with the #3 pick.

          • BerwynBomber

20M guaranteed is FAR, FAR from a huge we-have-our-QB for the long-term contract.

          • willbest

No but it makes no sense to give Glennon $20 million in guarantees and then give Watson $23 million in guarantees (which is roughly what the #3 player gets)

          • BerwynBomber

Why? Lots of teams have 40M guaranteed dumped into their QBs. Fuck, we had 54M in Cutty alone.

          • willbest

On a single QB, sure. On a pair? Only the Eagles as far as I can recall.

          • BerwynBomber

Just a new way of thinking. End of day, the bottom line is the bottom line.

But I see what you’re saying in terms of the #3 usually starts these days so there would be no reason for Glennon at 20M. More likely with Glennon would be a second or third rounder OR a guy drafted in ’18.

          • Huge Bears Penis

it makes no sense to me to not try and find a Franchise QB. I honestly don’t give a rats ass what other teams do. I don’t give a crap about guaranteed money. Franchise QBs are hard to find. Sign Glennon/Taylor or whoever else not named Hoyer and draft a QB. If they don’t they don’t pan out, draft another high next year. Keep drafting until you get what we need.

    • Sauron’s right eyeball

          • MB30SD

I don’t pine for anything but a chise. We have a boring and mediocre guy that protects the fuck outta the football.

If a year where we’re not going to the playoffs regardless, build the D and get us one step closer. That’s all that matters… Who cares who gets us our 6 to 8 wins.

        • Irish Sweetness

          Dude ….

  • BuddhaJoe

If they can get Watson with their 2nd than I’m all over it. Otherwise, get Tyrod Taylor, or fix the D and roll with Cutty unless his cap hit is preventing them from getting Bouye or Poe. As long as Hoyer ain’t the starter and we’re not dumping Cutty for nothing I’m for it.

    • leftcoastdave

His cap hit don’t matter. It will be paid to whoever is the presumptive starting QB. That’s what many have been trying to say all along. Cutting Cutty saves NO DOE.

      • That’s mostly because Cutler and high-end benchers have conflated.

Would it surprise anyone if Cutler rode pine this year, while Hoyer and Glennon started?

Or vice-versa, if Cutler started and Hoyer and Glennon rode pine?

You don’t have those questions with TRUE franchise QBs.

If Wilson or Carr were in FA, imagine how much they’d go for.

        • Irish Sweetness

“if Cutler rode pine this year, while Hoyer and Glennon started …”

I wouldn’t know where to start with that, or what to do with whomsoever was responsible for it.

          • MB30SD

Why’s that? I haven’t read down yet, but did you compare their stats last year yet… Wanna tell the class what you found?

          • Irish Sweetness

Stats schmats. Hoyer was only ever a desperate move for POX. Cutty / Shaw was their team, and so it is again it seems. Eyeballs, as always. Point being, if your billion-dollar franchise is thinking of going into the season with Glennon-Hoyer, it’s an admission of failure.

Russel Wilson has a $22mil/average right now. Carr would most certainly get the Rivers/Eli/Roth 21 mil treatment as well.

Glennon has a better resume than Oz. Oz might be the cautionary tale, but that doesn’t mean he has to settle for Fitzpatrick money either.

          • BerwynBomber

Oz was presumed to be ascending, though — the guy held back by the aging HoFer.

Would be shocked if Glennon gets anything close to 72M/37M (guaranteed) Oz money.

          • willbest

No he won’t, but he isn’t going to get a 1-year $12 million flier deal either.

          • BerwynBomber

Probably not but I could see two years getting the job done.

          • willbest

2 years is what Oz got. Years 3 & 4 are for the team benefit not him. Quite frankly, I don’t know why any NFL player bothers with this extra years.

          • BerwynBomber

Right. Should have said 2 years ~20-22M.

          • leftcoastdave

Gotta think Pace is not happy with where this story line has gone after Fox began to diss Cutty during the season.

          • BerwynBomber

            When did Fox dis Cutty?

          • leftcoastdave

Perhaps my memory is flawed, but my memory is that he did anything but stand by him after the injury.

          • Irish Sweetness

Don’t recall that …. but then again I don’t recall breakfast.

          • But look at what Cousins was asking for.
And both Carr and Wilson are seen much more favorably.

If either of them hit the market this yr they’d command $25M/yr + with insane gaurantees.

Would make sense. True franchise QBs made like $10M+ more than high-end bench warmers.

So the new market would be borderline benchers $15M – franchise QBs $25M+ going forward.

Luck is a good example. Cutler ain’t that cash for a reason.

  • Irish Sweetness

What are the rankings of? Why are the first 5 listed above Cutler? Because, right now, today, he’s better than all of them.

Hoyer would suggest a first round QB selection.

Unless the Bears are thinking Glennon, Hoyer and Shaw for ’17.

          • willbest

I just threw up a little.

          • BerwynBomber

We’ll see. Glennon might suck. Glennon might be as good as Cutler. He could even be a tad better. Who knows?

          • Irish Sweetness

A QB in the draft is a fair expectation for them … they’ve signed Shaw … they only carry two QBs …. Hoyer will be cheap-ish.

            1. Hoyer
            2. Shaw
            3. Trubs/Watson/Kizer

Now if the rook turns out to be something okay, but the first couple of years will be brutal. I just think if Cutty is in the top spot on that list then we could be winners, and winning is good.

        • Why is that surprising?

I’ve been saying the Bears like Hoyer over Cutler since Cutler was benched for him in what, October?

Been saying it for 5 months, and both Pace and Fox have hinted as much as possible without totally sticking a boot up Cutler’s ass or destroying his market (though there’s no market anyways, so nothing to destroy).

Heck, even Cutler realized it when they asked him how he feels about starting again, and he responded with something like “Well, there’s no one else”

          Never. Forget.

          • Irish Sweetness

That fans might say they can see Hoyer as a possibility is one thing, but for the Bears to actually do it ….. well, it is Jason LA Canfora so ….

Sure. Bridge guys even pop up in SBs now and again. Most recent example would be Hasselback out in SEA.

But yeah, BAL was bridge QB central pre-Flacco. Same with the Steelers pre-R-berger.

The OAK/TB SB was arguably the battle of bridge guys — Gannon vs. Johnson — though in reality that was more about Gruden coaching the pants off his former team.

      • Huge Bears Penis

Hasselback a bridge in SEA???? The guy was there for 10 years that is not a bridge.

        • MB30SD
          • Huge Bears Penis

I guess by thinking then we should keep Cutty as our bridge for the next 2 years, so he can be a 10 yr bridge guy.

          • MB30SD

again, if cutty wasn’t a fucking turn over machine that makes me want to fucking throw my phone at my TV, I’d be all over that.

            I am calm. ooooohhhhmmmmmmmmm….

          • BerwynBomber

Cutler was brought in to be a franchise guy. Hasselback was not. In fact, he wasn’t even the starter his first couple of years with SEA. And he was a back-up in GB prior to that.

        • BerwynBomber

Hasselback can happen with bridge guys. And he did not start for all ten years. In fact, the initial starter out there was another bridge guy — Dilfer.

But yes, a Hasseback can happen among bridge guys. Hell, Gannon won an MVP.

          • Huge Bears Penis

Hasselbeck was open day starter the first year he was there, so i don’t know how he wasn’t the initial starter. If anything, they brought him in hoping he would pan out, since Hasselbeck never started before going to SEA and it was only his 3rd year in the league, Dilfer was the security blanket if Hbeck flamed out.

Gannon is a good example of a bridge guy.

          • BerwynBomber

Ok, my bad. I thought he rode pine the first two years. But weren’t they grooming Seneca Wallace a few years while Hasselback was starting?

As hard a time as you’re having in Hasselback as a bridge I’m having in regard to Hasselback as a franchise guy. Ah well …

          • Huge Bears Penis

Wallace was a 4th round pick so he was there to develop for a couple years. but they also tried to get him to WR. so not really a guy they drafted in hopes of replacing Hasselbeck

  • Giving Mike Glennon $15M a year would be a career-defining move for Ryan Pace (and likely career-ending, IMO).

The top-paid backup QB in the NFL makes $7M a year. That would be signing Glennon to be your starter for at least 2 years.

For the “2 year bridge while you develop a QB” crowd, that’s not how this works. The only highly drafted QB in the last 10 years who sat and developed without starting during his rookie year was Aaron Rodgers, and that’s only because he was sitting behind a HOFer. Every other successful highly drafted QB was the starter by the end of his rookie year.

The “draft and develop on the bench” approach to QB is the approach you take for a mid-late round pick when you already have your starter in place. That’s what happened for guys like Kirk Cousins and Tyrod Taylor.

But the odds of landing a starting QB outside of the top 2 rounds over the last 5 years have been about 10%. The odds in high round 1 or round 2 have been about 70%.

So we come to this: the Bears should 100% spend one of their top 2 picks on a QB (either in draft or trading for Jimmy G). That guy should 100% be starting by the bye week of his rookie year.

Thus giving Mike Glennon $15M a year is 100% a stupid move. It’s a waste of money for a guy who should spend less than half a season actually playing.

And if it turns into “Glennon is our guy for the next 2-3 years, so we’ll draft a QB in round 4 or 5 to develop instead of investing a premium pick in the position,” then the odds are VERY good that the QB never pans out and Ryan Pace’s career as a GM is over before he turns 45.

I really cannot overstate how catastrophic this would be, both for the Bears and Ryan Pace’s career. I don’t think he’s that fucking stupid.

    • MB30SD

“And if it turns into “Glennon is our guy for the next 2-3 years, so we’ll draft a QB in round 4 or 5 to develop instead of investing a premium pick in the position,” then the odds are VERY good that the QB never pans out and Ryan Pace’s career as a GM is over before he turns 45.

totally, 100% agree with this data. Just roll with what we have/know, then put your career on the table with a MUCH stronger prospect next year.

    • BerwynBomber

So you’re saying we could have never drafted a QB during Jay Cutler’s entire tenure because “that’s not how it works”? (And mind, Cutty wasn’t even seen as a bridge, he was a franchise guy.)

Sure, it is unlikely the Bears take someone at #3 this year IF they sign Glennon to, say, a two year 20M contract. But it certainly would not preclude them from taking a guy at #37 or first round in 2018. And if one of those guys beats out Glennon, a’la Wentz over Daniels in PHI, so be it.

      • No, I’m saying the time to draft and develop with mid-late round picks is when you already have your guy in place. That’s how guys like Brady (Bledsoe), Cousins (RG3), and Tyrod Taylor (Flacco) happen.

The odds of successfully developing a guy like that are low, but it’s ok if you miss when you already have your guy.

Right now the Bears don’t have their guy, which is the time to invest a high pick in one. That’s your best chance of success. Those guys should play right away.

      • leftcoastdave

Talk about the genie being out of the bottle, this is some pretty chilling stuff.

  • And FWIW, Glennon looks like an awful prospect based on my college stats criteria. Wouldn’t technically be in the study as a 3rd rounder, but hits 0/6 benchmarks (and doesn’t really come close on any of them).

College team was mediocre, didn’t come close to a conference title
YPA was 7.1, nowhere close to the 8.9
TD/INT ratio was <2, nowhere close to the 3.7
Passer rating was 130.7, nowhere close to the 166
Threw a TD on 5.5% of throws, nowhere close to the 7.3% threshold

To put that in perspective, Glennon would have been in the bottom 5 in every category. Statistically very similar to Jake Locker and Blaine Gabbert.

Again, stats-based scouting is not a perfect approach by any means, but there's absolutely nothing in his statistical profile to suggest he'd be a good NFL QB.

    • Additionally, his rookie season stats everybody loves to point to were actually pretty awful outside of surprisingly few INTs.

He threw a good number of INTs in college, so I’m assuming that’s just a small sample size. His completion percentage and yards per attempt were both terrible. 59.4% completion was 26th of 37 qualified QBs, 6.3 yards per attempt was dead last.

      • MB30SD

suffice it to say, if pace goes with glennon we pretty much all think it’s a job and potentially career killer for him.

He HAS to be getting pressured from above.

        • This would fit the Fox MO of not wanting to be patient with a young guy developing, IMO.

    • BerwynBomber

Yeah, but look at how many of those Cutty hit in college. He looks like another 0/6 guy. With even worse stats than Glennon.

      http://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/jay-cutler-1.html

Anyway, I presume if Glennon is brought in it will be as a bridge. Not the long-term answer.

      • I don’t understand paying bridge that kind of money. That pretty much ties you to that guy as your QB for 2 years, which makes no sense given that a highly drafted rookie-which is the Bears’ best chance at finding their guy for the next decade-should be starting by the middle of their rookie season.

        • willbest

Its the new world where the floor on a presumptive starter in the NFL is apparently $12 million when they aren’t on a rookie contract. I expect backups start seeing pay raises. They currently get 2 million, probably going to have to spend 4-6 million on them. Which is what you spend on a starting running back.

          • I’m fine with spending $7M or so on a backup QB. That’s the top backup money in the NFL right now.

Not so keen on spending $15M on a guy who should be sitting on the bench after 8 games tops.

      • As for Cutler, the stats would have to be different for 10 years ago vs. the last 5 years, but I still don’t think he’d hit a ton of them.

And there are examples of guys succeeding without hitting the benchmarks, they’re just not very great odds.

We also have NFL sample for Glennon that says both his completion percentage and yards per attempt are not good. Typically dink-and-dunk guys have high completion % and bombs away guys have high ypa. Having both makes you really good, having neither makes you bad. Glennon has neither.

While we’re at it, let’s pretend Sbaw is Joe Montana 2.0, Howard never gets hurt, and Alshon decides to become the next Randy Moss sans drama and clubhouse cancer.

            Yeah, that’s it!

anyone but cutler, I don’t give a fuck about his age dude. He fucking blows and is a stress inducing TO machine.

  • Sactowns#1

Can someone please get in the way back machine, find the numerous posts of me screaming for us to draft Jimmy G and repost them here?! If we would have drafted him at that time so many things would look so different for this team.

    • BearDown100393

Jimmy G wasn’t Jimmy G until he was reprogrammed by Belichick. Beforehand he was just FN-2187.

I’m afraid that neither of these statements will turn out to be true.

This Vault 7 tool dump from Disco Jules is like a trip through Irish’s mind.

I have a Samsung TV. I guess it can be remote activated to start the mic, although I didn’t enable the network interface on it. But ALL the other shit they had, they had a LOT of shit. USB sticks with trojans that defeated Kaspersky and Windows Defender and grabbed everything and tunneled it via SSL.

I love that the virus for Windows was called “Ricky Bobby 3.0”.

    Comment on this?

    https://jesterscourt.cc/2017/01/28/russian-infiltration-us-federal-government/

Trump is a pawn. This CIA toolkit dump is mud in the water.

Here’s what they wanted all along: Tillerson.

    • willbest

That is so last month. Today we know it was the CIA that hacked the DNC and Podesta all along and made it look like the Russians.

      • Zap Rowsdower (GP)

        Wow. You are insane.

        • willbest

I am insane? You think Putin has direct control of our government. Which is more likely. Putin controls the US Fed Gov. Or a cabal of CIA/NSA/FBI agents?

          • Zap Rowsdower (GP)

You honestly think that the CIA broke into Podesta’s email account and then leaked it via a false flag to Assange to make it LOOK like the Russians did it?

That is insane. Totally batshit loon.

          • willbest

And yet, your theory is credible?

          • Zap Rowsdower (GP)

            Yes. It is.

Putin backed Trump because he needed Obama’s sanctions lifted so he could move oil through the pipeline he seized in the Ukraine tax-free. And Tillerson’s first act in office was to repeal those very sanctions.

Putin now stands to become the richest man in the world and avoids Hillary who would have doubled down and even escalated the war in Ukraine and possibly have tried for a no-fly zone in Syria.

Trump? he’s a tool. A clown. A populist patsy where it’s sessions and the Trump family and Tillerson that are really at work here.

          • willbest

I do truly hope you write these thoughts down in your journal and read them back to yourself 10 years from now.

          • Zap Rowsdower (GP)

You too. Unless you are actually Russian.

          • willbest

Here is your problem. I don’t think a cabal of deep state agents are secretly running this country. You think Trump is Putin’s puppet. Which is odd because your own guy D-Coons basically admitted they are on a wild goose chase.

And quite frankly, I don’t know why we should give a fuck about stopping Russia from dickering around. The Europeans are right fucking there and they don’t seem to care.

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

The Russians are the boogie man Nato countries love to bring out of hibernaton from time to time.

        • Sauron’s right eyeball

Truth is, nobody in their right mind hangs at dablog cafe like we all have over the years.

      • Which fake news outlet do u trust?

        • willbest

          None of them?

I have started treating news very much like a trial. One side presents a narrative and facts, than then a couple days later the opposing side destroys that narrative with other facts. And if you care enough to sort through the wreckage you will have a reasonably decent understanding of what is likely to have happened.

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

            Can I test your thesis?

            Was trump tower wire tapped?

          • willbest

It seems more likely than not. Then again I suppose that depends on how you are defining wire tap.

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

See, I don’t think it’s wise to allow our thought progression to make any assessments either way until the evidence actually surfaces. I’m all for wait and see….

          • willbest

My thinking is that the Obama IRS has been proven in court to target political opponents. Obama DoJ has been proven to have wiretapped journalists. And the only person that produced a denial was Clapper, who is a known perjurer. So any objective person at this point would have to believe its possible since we know the administration is capable of it.

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

I agree it’s possibe and even probable. I do find it hard to imagine Trump would make the claim without sufficient evidence to do so, however, that in itself doesn’t make it so.

          • willbest

Well obviously Putin wanted Trump to do it.

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

Could be a wag the dog, yup sure could.

          • Zap Rowsdower (GP)

Seriously, will, nobody gives a fuck that you cannot distinguish real news and credible sources from fake ones. That is your fucking problem.

The rest of us know journalism from propaganda.

          • willbest

You think you linked real news?

          • Zap Rowsdower (GP)

            Yep. I do.

I put Jester Actual about 10 notches ahead of any source you came up with.

Again, you gotta know who the good guys are.

          • And from that process u concluded that it was more likely the CIA pretended to be Russian spies in order to elect then later attack Trump?

As opposed to, you know, the Russians wanting a pawn the could control and make Putin even richer snd more powerful?

          • willbest

Its actually pretty difficult to talk to you and GP, because you two are completely off your rocker. You guys are running around looking for zebras because if you had to
believe it was horses it would shatter your world view that Trump is an
incompetent buffoon. The only way you are coping with the results of
the election is to believe that it was stolen from you buy Russia. And there is less evidence of that than the Obama administration was spying on Trump.

Anyway, there isn’t any question that the CIA had greater opportunity, access, and ability. The only question is whether it was desirable for it. And quite frankly, I can’t see why they wouldn’t be digging up everything they could on anybody in government R or D. Seems like the thing to do if you were interested in preventing your leaders from becoming pawns of foreign governments.

And then it doesn’t have to be a CIA command to release it to wikileaks. It could just be some data analyst that wanted to make a difference. That is what is scary about collecting all this data. The more you collect the more there is the greater the security risk it becomes.

And if it was the CIA, or a rogue CIA agent in what universe would they admit to it? And how would anybody catch them lying?

As an aside I find it amusing watching either you or GP assert that Clinton would take a hardline on Russia. I recall one of you claiming that Trump was more likely than Clinton to start war with Russia. And I wasn’t on the forum during Obama’s reset or greater flexibility, but I have a gut feeling you weren’t exactly all that concerned about him being a pawn then either.

If it makes you feel better I openly admit that Putin preferred Trump to Clinton, then again so did I. By the end Clinton had almost made a war resolution a 100 day policy pledge.

    Trubinsky in CBS new poll.

Foster in free-fall since his combine dust-up at the hospital.

I swear to god if we pick trubinski (or any QB) I will drop a fucking brick. I will be done, I just will.

Glennon is the price you pay for Garrett, Thomas, Adams, Hooker.

          why?

          • MB30SD

again, who cares. with a badass D and better specials… and a decent kicker, that’s the 6-8 wins we’re looking for next year.

ANY qb pressure for next year is total bullshit and is utterly artificially manufactured.

  • Gilmore and Glennon? Gspot?

Bleacher Report’s Jason Cole passes along “growing talk” the Bears are in pursuit of free agent CB Stephon Gilmore.
If all of these pre-free agency reports come true, the Bears have a lot of leaks atop their organization. They are seen as the clear favorites to sign both Gilmore and free agent QB Mike Glennon. Chicago needs a cornerback upgrade across from Tracy Porter. Bryce Callahan would likely then take over at slot corner- roto

    • willbest

      Would rather have Bouye

    • willbest

Also Poe, and I think that Wagner RT from the Ravens is a reasonable upgrade to Massie.

      • MB30SD

all please, including bouye… oh, minus glennon

    • Huge Bears Penis

Porter is nothing more than a nickel CB. They need 2 CBs. Gilmore would be a good start.

  • BerwynBomber
    • Zap Rowsdower (GP)

both would be decent FA acquisitions, although i think Patterson is KR only and has not washed out as a wideout.

  • willbest

“I’d rather make a sacrifice like this than spend three nickels on Glennon.” – Jeff

I don’t know why you would want to trade for Trumaine, when you can just pay Bouye
