The Bears Stink. Support a Good Cause.

| December 4th, 2017

In last week’s game preview I gave some space to the charitable efforts of Cook County Commissioner – and friend of DBB -Bridget Gainer. The image is above.

Since this is a blog, and since writing is a central component, I’ve decided to focus our attention on the composition notebooks. Incarceration ain’t easy. And while providing shampoo and conditioner would be nice, providing these women with an outlet to express themselves would be far more impacting.

And our sponsor, AREENA, has decided to match the total donations of our readers. We’ll then take the money and get hundreds of composition notebooks to Gainer’s people the week of December 18th.

So donate! $2 buys a notebook. $5 buys three notebooks. Give what you can. The Bears stink. So let’s try and make a difference. The button to donate is directly below.

Giants were the first to fire their coach. Will the Bears be second? We supposedly like to model ourselves after them.

    • BearDown100393

Should have been first. Will settle for second. Just make it happen now.

  • Love this Jeff! Way to use your platform for a great cause.

    • BearDown100393

Kudos to Jeff for frequently using the blog’s exposure to support great causes.

    • AlbertInTucson

      I’m in.

  • BearDown100393

George wants to be like the Giants?

    Fire Hobo.

Just like they did with McAdoo.

  • fishing florida

WHY WOULD ANY OF THE BEST HEAD COACH CANDIDATES COME TO THE BEARS? an apparently throughly disfunctional organization, a roster desperately short of difference makers, and a quarterback who looks very iffy. the best player for the bears sunday was kyle fuller. watch him leave in free agency like alshon. i would.

    • evantonio

because you don’t get a steakhouse in chicago by winning a superbowl in arizona.

    • BearDown100393

Because everybody loves the ’85 Bears and uh………………

    • DaBearsBlog

Because there are 32 jobs and 100 people who want them. And the Bears are still a marquee destination.

      • Juan Stone

Yep, currently they rank slightly above the Bismarck Bombers. He he

      • John F

Maybe the Bears were somewhere to aspire to 30 years ago, but not anymore.

Chicago Bears = Dysfunction and Incompetence

      • willbest

Chicago is not a marquee destination. The property taxes are ridiculous. The sales taxes are outrageous and our cheap income tax is now right there with every other state.

While not NY, the media isn’t as laid back as it is elsewhere. The facilities are currently dated (though they are revamping them presently so they will be better in a couple years). Oh and unlike the players that get to scatter after the season is over, the coaches have to work here through our winters which aren’t the most pleasant.

You are right about there only being 32 jobs (only 5-6 are open at a time), but that doesn’t mean the Bears are going to avoid getting the Giant’s sloppy seconds. Hell I would take Tampa Bay over the Bears if I were a coach in demand.

        • Bear Instincts

and being the coach who win the 1st SB in 32 years for the charter franchise all the incentive you need to coach the bears. you don’t coach football if you don’t have an ego the size of the sun thinking you can command the respect of 53 men (you and old) who make more money than you (some make more money)

every team opening is a place someone wants to go. some opening are more attractive than others. the bears opening is very attractive

    • Juan Stone

I suggest you read the book of Lamentations beginning with “The Sorrows of Zion” in Chapter 1. Just sayin…

    • ButtonShoes

The only reason would be if they liked Trubisky. It would have to center around that. Otherwise they wouldn’t.

    • Irish Sweetness

I think Chucky threw his hat in the ring when he talked about Trubisky in that one game – how he’d be good for a coach to work with As long as a coach has a QB, he has a chance. You can build the other stuff, but it’s hard to build a QB.

Plus it’s 5 or 6 million per year. There’s that.

  • AlbertInTucson

    Good concept. Donation submitted.

“Bears wouldn’t win any more games by firing John Fox. But they could win the PR game and let fans/media turn the page to 2018.”

    Yes.

Firing Fox Message: “We hear you and we actually DO give a damn.”

    • ButtonShoes

Which is why he won’t get fired. Because they don’t listen to us and don’t give a damn.

      • BearDown100393

John Fox’s tenure with the Bears as the holder of the all time worst team coaching record only continues because of Ryan Pace.

  • AlbertInTucson

I was not a “Fire him now!” proponent.

    Until 1:34 to go yesterday.

Fox didn’t even GO THROUGH THE MOTIONS of giving a damn.

    • BearDown100393

      When has he?

    • Bender McLugh

……..He must know he’s out. Has to right?

  • AlbertInTucson

Brad Biggs ALSO totally misses the point on the end of yesterday’s game.

“Had the defense allowed the Niners to score, the offense would have needed a game-winning touchdown drive and the offense had produced a meager 147 yards. Fox made the right call there.”

No Brad, he did NOT and neither have YOU!

He pissed away a golden opportunity for a TEACHING MOMENT and VALUABLE SITUATIONAL EXPERIENCE for Trubisky, regardless of the score.

    http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/football/bears/ct-spt-bears-49ers-10-thoughts-brad-biggs-20171204-story.html

    • SC Dave

The assumption is, of course, that the 9ers would have taken the bait

    • John F

Bradley is a blowhard and an apologist for Bears management. He was singing Grossman’s praises and telling us to trust Lovie 10 years ago and we all know how that turned out. He constantly tells us that “so and so” isn’t playing because the coaches see them everyday in practice and they must know better. Bradley needs access to the team so he covers for them. Never listen to any of his analysis, his answer is always “let’s wait a while for the player/team to figure it out” when anyone with two eyes can see a guy is incompetent as a coach or player.

Also it only took David Haugh at the Trib 15 years to figure out that the McCaskeys might not know what they are doing – don’t listen to that guy either.

      • ButtonShoes

Just 4 weeks ago Haugh was writing that the Bears needed to keep John Fox around. Last week, he was writing that they should fire him. That dude doesn’t have one fucking clue.

        • To be fair, the tone around the team has dramatically changed since the bye.

Going into the bye, they had a defense playing lights out and were coming off of 2 wins over playoff teams and a close road loss to one of the best teams in the NFL. This legitimately looked like an exciting young team with the arrow pointing up.

Then they came out of the bye and have laid 3 stinkers in 4 weeks. It’s fair to change your opinion after that.

      • fishing florida

hub arkush and brad biggs the best, most knowledgeable on the bears.

    • BearDown100393

Fox is not going to commit to a future that does not include him.

So development is mothballed by his staff.

    • Bender McLugh

      Boom.

  • BearDown100393

John Fox is who he is.

And he is not going to change now.

Pace could make an impact statement right now. And solidify his vision for his own player personnel from the past 3 seasons.

    Pace does nothing.

Why won’t Pace fire Fox? The McCaskeys? Is that really a reason or an excuse?

That resonates far louder and a more troubling siren than any decision by Fox moving forward.

    • John F

If Pace fired Fox now he runs the risk of people pointing the finger at him (Pace). It is every man for himself over there and Fox is a nice shield for now. This way Pace gets to pick another coach, get a fat 5 year extension in 2019 and then get fired after that guy flops.

      It’s the McCaskey way …………….

      • BearDown100393

Every day John Fox remains Head Coach, Pace’s picked players will check out on this organization.

Pace is choosing John Fox over them, including his sink or swim pick Mitch Trubisky.

        Definitely the McCaskey way.

      • Bender McLugh

Agreed about the shield, but it’s not like that shield goes away of Pace fires Mr. Constipated/Depends. To me, that shield would remain in place post-firing, the supporting fans would not instantly say “well shit, pace gave up”. Doesn’t make sense. I will definitely grant you that it gives naysayers more ammo.

  • CanadaBear
    • Bender McLugh

had the better quarterback in Jimmy Garoppolo and they won the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.

Nope. Not that much better than Trubs against a very beat up D. I like JG, but this was not a shining example of taking over a game. He did what he needed to on the last drive with a shitty team, but can’t say he was the better qb yesterday. That just smells of piss in Cheerios more than anything to me

      • CanadaBear

Can you blame him after having to deal with Foxy and all this BS for a few years? I take all the JG is better than MT with a grain of salt.

        • Bender McLugh

let alone having to deal with the Foxy o, totally agree

        • SC Dave

BB said JG looked better yesterday, which to me was abundantly obvious.

          • CanadaBear

I’m talking about career path, coulda, woulda, shoulda about the trade, etc. JG has been in the league 3.5 years under two smart offensive coaches. He should have been better yesterday.

      • BerwynBomber

I thought JG looked better than Bisky. We had eight first downs the entire day. And less than 150 total yards.

Plus, JG delivered a near perfect ball on his INT. It was just an exceptional swipe by Fuller.

        • Bender McLugh

He looked good but not great. Trubs looked better than last week

  • CanadaBear

The G-Men fired the GM along with the HC. The GM had 2 SB’s on his resume. I’m guessing Pace’s seat is feeling a little warmer today. The G-Men are bringing in Ernie Acorsi in an advisory capacity.

    • Bender McLugh

Are they serially bringing in Acorsi? Interesting….. Still has no significance for Pace tho

      • CanadaBear

Yes they are! My only point about Pace’s seat warming up is if the G-Men can launch a GM with 2 SB wins on his resume, there doesn’t seem to be a compelling reason to keep Pace. I’m not beating the drum for Pace’s dismissal but after over seeing a stretch of Bears football that was even worse than the Gibron era (statistically), it’s hard to say with a straight face that he deserves to stay.

        • Bender McLugh

I hear ya, Pace hasn’t turned the beloved around…….YET. I’m still giving one more year before I’m standing next to all of us with flaming pitchforks.

          #NTTAWWT

          Edit: autocorrect

        • Bender McLugh

Shush you and your statistics! I want my GM and quarterback too

      • Dis Guy Trublinsky

Ernie Accorsi is a very well respected name in the NFL. He built the Giants teams that knocked off the Pats twice. He’s been in the league since forever.

And despite a few Chicken Littles on this blog, there’s still a pretty good chance Pace pans out in Chicago. The whole thing is on Pace to hire the right coach to mesh with Trubisky. Get that right, everything’s fine.

        • BearDown100393

          Fire Ryan Pace.

          • Dis Guy Trublinsky

We know Bear Down. We know.

        • evantonio

Wait. Did Accorsi bring in Pace? Or Fox?

          • Dis Guy Trublinsky

            Pace

          • willbest

Pace, we aren’t sure about Fox. Jeff’s sources said that Pace hired Fox, but then his sources also said fox would get shit canned if he lost to the 9ers.

          • BearDown100393

            Both

        • John F

Chicken Little was wrong because he repeatedly said “the sky is falling” when it wasn’t. In this case THE SKY IS FALLING. This is the worst three year span for the Bears in the last 97 years. Pace has wasted tens of millions on free agents that don’t play or are constantly hurt. He has wasted first round picks on a WR and OLB that can’t stay healthy and a QB that is occasionally above average. At best he has selected players that are marginal starters and NO consistent “playmakers”. Pace deserves a D+ or maybe a C- as a GM.

          • Dis Guy Trublinsky

You do you Bud. I’m tired of trying to reason with folks. I just disagree with you. Pace has also brought in some really good young players. But none of it matters. If he gets the right coach to help Trubisky, he’s golden. If Trubisky sucks all of next year, he’s likely gone.

          • BearDown100393

I agree it is all chips in on Mitch

          • John F

You have much more confidence in a coach’s ability (any coach) to make Trubisky competent. I think you come into the league competent and a coach can maybe help you get a little better. Most of the good QB’s in the NFL were great in college, Trubisky was average to slightly above average.

          • BearDown100393

            Stick around.

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

A lot of bad QBs were great in college.

          • BearDown100393

            Pace has failed

        • Bender McLugh

I am a fan of Pace and don’t get the Debbie Downer talk about him.

    • willbest

If it really was Pace’s call to hire Fox, and Ernie/Geroge/Ted expressed no preference then I could see Pace being in quite a bit of trouble. If Fox came highly recommended by the brain trust, then I think he gets 2 more years.

      • CanadaBear

I’m guessing he gets the new hire and 3 years. Then they both get fired because they have become the new Factory of Sadness.

    • BearDown100393

Pace did not hire Fox. But it is Pace’s job to fire him.

  • willbest

NFL trying to buy the players off. 90 million over 7 years to progressive causes. That works out to $400,000 per owner per year.

    • evantonio

BUT. And this is quite the but. That 90 million isn’t new cash. The plan is to take money that was already earmarked for other causes, and instead put it to these funds meant to buy players’ silence. Stay classy, NFL.

heh so the 90 million they have left of the 100 million they allocated to concussion research is going to progressive causes.

    • BearDown100393

“Mara: “Pointless to wait any longer to make these changes.”

    McCaskey: ” – Jeff

That is all well and good, but why was it pointless this week and not last week?

    • For the Giants or Bears?
Giants have home games coming up and Mara didn’t want 50,000 boos embarrassing him even more.

Chicago fans OTH are not as vocal. McCaskeys know they can bend them over, and they’ll take it

      • willbest

I meant for the Giants. Mara said it was pointless to wait any longer. Would that not have been true before the Eli benching? Or were they willing to entertain the possibility that things would improve if Eli wasn’t QB1. And if they were willing to entertain that thought, why only give 1 game for it.

      • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

Its true. And the rest of the coaching staff is absolutely brilliant. I copied all the plays from the last few weeks and gave them to a PeeWee FB teams coach to use. All the plays worked perfectly. I made a ton of money betting on that team.

        • CanadaBear

Kinda sends a bad msg when they gave Talib and Crabtree 2 each for acting like pissy babies and 1 to a guy that not only intentionally hit a prone player in the back of the helmet but thought about it before he hit him. If they give a shit about concussions at all, that should have merited more than 1 game. Don’t want to make it a black/white thing but the only other answer is he’s a Pat.

Sad Fact: The Chicago Bears have won two championships in the last 71 years

    • AlbertInTucson

Actually it’s 2 in the last 54 or THREE in the 71.

      1946. 1963. 1985.

What is REALLY sad is they are something like, 6 post season appearances in the last 24 or 25 years.

      • AlbertInTucson

In the NFL Modern, Super Bowl Era (since 1966), the Bears have:

        1 Championship.

        2 Super Bowl appearances.

        14 post season appearances.

        37 NON-playoff seasons.

        • Irish Sweetness

And how many of those good seasons were when Papa Bear was alive? He left us with a super bowl squad and it was all down hill after their heyday … the wife and children he left behind were clueless …to this day …. et cetera et cetera. So be it.

          • CanadaBear

George’s tenure as player or coach is not part of the modern era.

          • AlbertInTucson

But there was a quite a dry spell between the mid 60’s and the mid 80s.

          • John F

OK, one more extremely depressing factoid:

Forget about playoffs, the Bears have had back-to-back winning seasons only twice in the last 25 years

  • CanadaBear
    • BearDown100393

“I think we had a great week of preparation,” Fox said, echoing
Trubisky and other players. “I think the guys’ mindsets are good and
      they are working at it.

“We’re going back to work with our heads down and we will continue to work. I wish I had something better to tell [Bears fans].”

      RESORTING TO GREAT PRACTICES NOW.

      Just like Trestman.

      SMH.

      • willbest

So we are 1 team captain missing practice to open a restuarant. 1 surreal benching of Trubisky after a Loggains media leak away from full on 2014. Oh wait, we would still need to win 2 more games for that.

        • CanadaBear

Nessman is in a category all his own. The record was bad but the internal chaos was off the charts.

          • Did Tresty ever have a chance with dudes like Bennett and Bmarsh?

            Talk about a toxic mixture.

          • SC Dave

Do you think it’s really much better right now?

          • CanadaBear

I’d say it’s better. No coaches have been caught dissing their own players publicly.

    • Juan Stone

Sigh… it wasn’t too long ago fans had no problem letting Lovie go after a 10-6 year. Unfortunately, in the modern era, Lovie and Jerry seems to be as good as it gets in Chicago Land.

Maybe you can turn down the volume while you listen to your favorite Elton John song as you ponder this bitter thought.

  • Cubsnlinux

This may be a wild conjecture but I think there is more to Fox not losing his job yet. I think this doesn’t bode well for Pace. Pace may not be in full control here and may very well be let go with Fox after the season. I don’t think there is anything Pace has done that would speak well for his future. He has two more years and unless he gets extended this off-season or sometime next year he will be a lame duck. What will the Bears do then with this brand new HC? Pace is the football guy and so far hasn’t opened his mouth during this disastrous season. Bears are a Hicks injury away from people saying this roster is shit. The starting QB has shown nothing and only has hope/faith going for him. Think about that.

    • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

Can GMs really be lame ducks??

      • willbest

That seems like a disaster waiting to happen.

      • Cubsnlinux

Lame duck/raccoon..you get the point. If we don’t turn it around next season and win say 6-7 games then there would be a strong possibility that Pace would be fired. What if the new GM doesn’t want this HC? It is just a shitty situation.

        • Malice Halice

Shit apples falling from a shit tree

        • Dis Guy Trublinsky

I may be Pace’s strongest supporter here on the blog. But if they win 6 games next year, it’s because Trusbisky is terrible and I’ll beat Bear Down to the castle with my pitchfork.

I believe Pace has assembled enough young players that have enough talent to be a true core going forward. I also believe he will continue to add them. Further, I believe he will spend money in Free Agency this year.

He’s picked his quarterback. His quarterback is getting game reps. And now he gets to pick his coach. I believe the D will be sound next season. So if they’re not winning games, it’s because either Trubisky doesn’t have it, or he hired the wrong coach.

So let’s see what happens. If I’m wrong, I’m wrong. But to fire him now, after what was a near impossible task of ridding the roster of cancerous rot, and laying a usable foundation, is fucking stupid. Let’s see what his QB and coach tandem can do. Because I believe Pace has the brains, and the balls to do this job well. But he was severely handicapped out of the gate.

If the Bears aren’t in the playoff conversation next season in December, then fuck Pace. And I’ll be here loud and proud, eating my crow like a grown ass man.

Pace is the Mitch of GMs. The next HC will determine what that really means

I resemble this remark. I just hope that the team does not become too far self-identified with being losers.

          • Irish Sweetness

In fairness to Pace, he had a choice of two QBs IMHO. If he did his homework on Watson and was indeed afraid of the knees … then Trubs was the only other guy you could hang your hat on. He’s got three more wins than Troy Aikman as a rookie. He’s shown real flashes of brilliance with that arm. It’s in there. It just needs coaching out, like they all do.

Don’t tell me Chucky wouldn’t say yes to the job. He still wants it.

As of now Pace’s draft n FA acquisitions are not producing at all! Either due to lack of talent or injury. There’s no excuse for this, this even goes for Howard. Hasn’t brought in a single pro bowler his tenure here so far. It DOES NOT look good for pace either. Yea we all can blame fox but it’s pace’s guys (some fox) that’s been droppin like flies or can’t produce.

      • I don’t think you have a single true statement in your comment, which is quite impressive.

        1) Draft n FA acquisitions are not producing at all. Sure, if you ignore Akiem Hicks, Danny Trevathan, Prince Amukamara, Jordan Howard, Josh Sitton, Dontrelle Inman, Eddie Goldman, and Tarik Cohen, just to name a few (not to mention Mitch Trubisky, who’s been pretty good in awful situations in 3/4 games since the bye).

        2) Hasn’t brought in a single Pro Bowler in his tenure. Josh Sitton and Jordan Howard both went last year after being acquired by Pace in the 2016 offseason (which was an absolute home run in both the draft and FA).

Sure there have been a lot of injuries, which is incredibly frustrating. But the Bears have one of the top 5 or 10 groups of drafted players from the last 3 years.

        • Malice Halice

Howard didn’t go to da pro bowl last year. Sitton has ALWAYS been a pro bowler so no credit is givin there. Hicks i’d give u, Danny’s is too injury prone, as well as Goldman. Inman has potential but regardless this guys ain’t contributing to point of W’s. I HIGHLY doubt we have top 5 or 10 draftees cuz Cody is our only full fledge great player. Yea we ALL know Howard’s a beast but he ain’t been doin shit. Floyd’s always injured and Tarik is a cock tease till he get a better coach

People are just a little too down on the QB. He is a rookie. Put in awful situations by coaches, yes he has issues and makes mistakes, again he is a rookie. Give him a chance. Yet people expect him to be Brady, Rodgers, or even Wilson.

      • Cubsnlinux

I didn’t say Trubisky is a sure bust or that he is just a bad QB. He is a complete unknown at this point. Without resorting to hyperbole you can argue either way to certain extent. The bigger point is what has Pace done in the last 3 seasons to get another extension? This is a results oriented business. In year three of the so called rebuild we lost to the Hundley led Packers, the one win Niners and didn’t have a warm body to kick field goals last Sunday. WTF is this mess? Injuries cannot be an excuse in this league. This is not the NBA or even the MLB. Season ending injuries are a norm and not an exception. Bears are last in their division and in the last three years Vikings and even Lions looked much better than the hapless Bears. What standards are we holding Ryan Pace to?

        • BearDown100393

Mitch was outperformed by Hundley & Jimmy G. Not good for a #2 overall pick. Reflects poor on Pace. Cling to hope he is Goff 2.0 with a better coaching staff

      • I deleted it shortly after.osting because I thought better of it.

  • Here’s my main gripe.

I’ve always given Pace the benefit of the doubt because

    A. He inherited the Angelo/Emery scout structure
    B. He inherited the post-Trestman locker room – talent and culture
    C. His bosses are either indifferent, buffoons, or both

Things I DIDN’T like about Pace

    A. He’s a fucking cheap ass in FA. At first I could understand just trying to get level, but it’s been 3 yrs, and outside Hicks, bunch of JAGs (one might argue Emery was better than Pace in FA. Think about that)

    B. His drafts sometimes make me wonder.

For me It started with Grasu, and for others, drafting White over Vic Beasly.

So far the jury is out on his drafts, but we were ALL hoping for a Seahawks type draft.

It hasn’t happened. Pace seems about avg when it comes to draft, and if you combine that with his FA reluctance + injuries, well, here we are.

But the MAIN sin Pace has committed thus far is holding on to Fox for FAR too long.

I always assumed Pace was initially stuck with Cargo and Fox.

But Jeff (and Biggs essentially echoed it) says his sources confirm Pace was ok with Fox.

That is a HUGE FUCK UP.

And let’s say for some crazy reason the McCaskeys shoved Fox down Pace’s throat.

Pace STILL held on to Fox for too long. If I could see Fox sucked last season, why couldn’t Pace?
Isn’t getting paid millions to have keen football judgment?

It was OBVIOUS last season that Albino Lovie checked out. Had nothing to do with injuries.

    His in-game coaching was HORRENDOUS.
They always came out like zombies.
They NEVER out coached anyone after half-time

    And this is the thing.

IF Pace knew he was going to draft Trub this off-season – WHY – WHY – sabotage your new franchise QB’s yr with a dumb-ass, out-dated, apathetic HC?

    WHY?

ESPECIALLY when guys like McVay and Kyle Shannahan were available.

I assumed Pace would hire his HC and draft his QB in ’18.

    But nope.

It is entirely possible Pace DID hire Fox.
Kept Fox in spite of ALL evidence he sucked.
Moved up for his QB when he didn’t have to and drafted the wrong QB
Then will hire a whole new coaching regime who is now shackled to Trub much like the previous coaches were shackled to Cutler.

Keep in mind, the ’18 QB class by most accounts is far superior to the ’17.
AND by most accounts, there’s no McVay or Kyle Shannahon quality prospects.

    ………..

Can Pace still somehow have landed a true Franchise in a weak QB17 class?
    Maybe

Can Pace find the next McVay in a somewhat mediocre coaching batch?
    Maybe.

Can Pace somehow sign playmaker FAs instead of dollar bin specials like Wheaton?
    Maybe.

But I’m becoming more and more skeptical with every passing week.

    • Dis Guy Trublinsky

You are literally the only person on the planet that didn’t laud the Fox hiring when it happened. Kudos to you for that. But the football universe thought it was a good idea. Turns out you were spot on. But the situation looked right three years ago for that hire.

      • BearDown100393

Never imagined Fox would end up like this

        • John F

I didn’t either but the more I look back on his record, he was flaming out until Manning rescued his butt, and even then, the Broncos imploded in the SB.

He was living on his rep from when the league was WAY different in the late 90’s and early 2000’s.

      • I could understand the initial rational.

But it was obvious by last November that Fox was NOT the guy.

I forget which game it was that totally got me off the Fox pick, think it was the Jags or Giants game, but either way, by the end of the season, painfully obvious Fox sucked.

At that point, if you’re Pace, who was eyeing Trub the whole ’16 season, covertly planning to draft him, WHY keep Fox who is reactive, “old school” and incompetent? What made Pace think Fox could mold his future QB better than these sharper minds like McVay or Kyle Shannahan?

        That’s what I don’t get. At all.

And it doesn’t exactly make me excited about Pace’s future vision.

        • BearDown100393

So why prolong Pace just like Fox?

        • Dis Guy Trublinsky

Only argument I could make is that injuries totally fucked any accurate measure of last year. I guess one could argue there was no way of knowing what the QB situation would be until the draft actually happened. At that point, it’s too late.

        • SC Dave

McVay sure seems like 20-20 hindsight to me. I don’t follow coaching prospects much, but was ANYBODY actually talking about the guy before his current job?

          • The thing is that the casual fan isn’t privy to coaching candidates.

            It’s kinda like with QBs

The fan doesn’t have all the inside info or is present in the interviews

            The GMs are.

And good GMs take advantage of that to hire or draft the right person to turn franchises around.

            That’s literally their job.

    • willbest

      In no particular order

      1) Don’t sell Trevathan short. And Freeman if he were better at knowing drug schedules vs. NFL testing schedules. McPhee was pretty good before he destroyed his knee. If anything, whoever is providing him medical risk assessment needs to go.

      2) If you are giving him A, why would even talk about how the first draft panned out?

      3) The circumstances on Fox though lend themselves to that 3rd year. Are you really faulting Fox for Cutler dying, Hoyer’s broken arm, shaw’s broken leg and Barkley time. How can you honestly assess anything out of the 2016 injury fest. The only reason I said they need to move on from Fox is because they drafted Trubisky. If his plan was Cousins or Tyrod or Cutler or McCown or Hoyer for 2017 then there wasn’t a point to moving on from Fox. But if he is going to draft his QB, then he should get his QB in on the ground floor of the system he envisions for the team. That wasn’t Loggains’ system.

      4) Agreed, he needs to do better on the top of FA.

      • BearDown100393

Danny calf oh Danny calf the pipes are calling

      • 1. Freeman and Tre were excellent, I thought. Then, Freeman is suspended for like 2 season, and Tre has been limping around for about the same.

        2. NOT giving his draft an A. Maybe I’ll just use Roman numerals next time, but if I had to grade Pace’s draft off the top of my head, it’s a C-.

        3. YES, I AM faulting Fox even with Cutler and the injuries because the IN-GAME decisions were ALWAYS horrible. I’m not about to re-watch all his games, but Fox’s preparation, plan and execution always sucked in my eyes.

Ppl kept saying the same “cutler, qbs, injuries…” but that has NOTHING to do with them coming out like zombies, no half time adjustments, etc etc

That stupid ass challenge summed up Fox perfectly.

NOTHING to do with personnel, injuries, talent.

Just plain stupidity, and Fox has been making those type of decisions since he’s arrived.

        4. elf explanatory.

        • willbest

I mean not giving his draft an A. His 2015 draft was bad. But your (A) was that he inherited Angelo/Emery front office. Its hard to have a good draft when you don’t have a competent organization gathering you intel.

      • SC Dave

        1) Freeman was a big disappointment on the PED front. A terrible shame, since he was the best player on the defense, except (arguably) Hicks.

    • Sactowns#1

My biggest problem with pace is he doesn’t follow the principle of Occam’s Razor. If conventional logic says this guy is the best in the draft, just take him. Why reach for these unproven experiment? Ego? A gamblers streak in hopes of a bigger payout? Wanting to prove youre the smartest guy in the room? I just don’t get it.
2015- Could have gotten Vic Beasley, Devonte Parker, Nelson Angholor. nope- went for White instead.
2016- Passed on Shaq Lawson, Sheldon Rankins, Vernon Hargraves, Darron Lee and more, to get an undersized DE.
2017- Don’t even get me started.

      This. So much this.

“IF Pace knew he was going to draft Trub this off-season – WHY – WHY – sabotage your new franchise QB’s yr with a dumb-ass, out-dated, apathetic HC?” Enough said about Pace. If excellence is your standard he has done nothing. Why draft a QB and more importantly an extremely raw one who would need nurturing and lots of learning when you don’t have the system in place to support that?

    • SC Dave

      Butch, on this:

“They NEVER out coached anyone after half-time”

There is a point. JWood threw some numbers out there. Hicks is playing 97% of snaps. This is insane. He isn’t the only player being abused. Fox already pissed away the san fran game. He could have at least tried and won it.

      • Yeah, I’m no Fox backer (understatement of the yr), but no point now.

The correct time to fire Fox and promote Fangio was last November.

        Now, what’s the point?

Fangio might be pissed the Bears blocked him from leaving this yr.
Seems like it to me since according to Jeff’s sources, he not only refused an extensions but promotion to interim.

Do we really want a guy who wanted to bolt as HC?

I would rather roll the dice on Birdcage, but – well – LOOK at him.

        He’s Birdcage.

For all the people saying “fire Fox but lets wait and see on Pace”. What do you think the Bears record would be is Bellachet himself coached this team? I mean honestly. What do you think? 4, maybe 5 wins? Pace is the root cause. Hiring yet another coach is just putting a band aid on a broken arm.

    • BearDown100393

      Keep posting.

    • Here’s the thing Sac – what prospective GM will be better than Pace?

GMs are tricky cuz unlike players or coaches, they usu don’t have a track record as GM.

If they’re good, they’re not looking for work.

      And then we’re back to

      1. Trusting the McCaskeys to hire better GM than Pace
      2. Tapping some “Brain Trust” to hire better GM

I would have to see the GM options first before running Pace out of town.

But I woudn’t be totally opposed to it.

For instance, if Chucky or Harbs want to have GM powers a la Billichick, well, might have to seriously dwell on that if it came up.

      • BearDown100393

Neither Giraffe or Mitch would be Bears. And Robbie might.

      • Dis Guy Trublinsky

Jury’s still out on Pace. Next year tells the tale.

And fuck Harbaugh. Dude can’t even win big games at Michigan.

        And have a SB ring

  • BuddhaJoe

As much as Pace has been a mixed bag, I wouldn’t mind if he got one more shot at an HC hire. But ALL options need to be on the table at this point. If they have a shot at a coach that doesn’t want Pace around then they gotta be willing to dump his ass. Same thing with Trub. Neither has sucked enough to just dump, BUT neither have done enough to just keep around no questions asked.

    • If I’m the McCaskeys, I’m bringing in prospective GMs and hearing their pitch, what coaches they can get, which way they would go in the draft, what they think of Trub, how they would restructure the med and scouting dept, etc

I’d be wide open to it, and I wouldn’t try to hide it either.

If a pitch blows my socks off, Pace is gone.

It would have to go a little something like this…

      • Dis Guy Trublinsky

In this scenario you’re trusting the McCaskeys to make the hire?

        • That’s the rub.

The McCaskeys aren’t ‘football’ guys like Papa Bear.

And hiring an outside consultant who has little invested in the team also isn’t ideal.

But, I gotta believe, SOMEONE at Halas has a clue.

          • Dis Guy Trublinsky

The argument that the McCaskeys are fucking the team because they don’t care or are too inept just bothers me.

They’ve paid overlapping coaches for years now. And they hired an outside consultant to help with a talent search. That is a very common business practice. In fact, it’s standard in big business.

They openly admit they need help, hire the help and take his advice. Still not good enough.

Fans act as though there is a prescribed method for success and ownership chooses to ignore it.

The fact is, it’s extremely difficult to win and sustain success in the NFL. The Patriots are the gold standard because they hit on a hall of fame coach and QB at the same time. And they’ve won a third of the Super Bowls since then. The coach washed out of Cleveland and the QB was a 6th rounder. It’s literally fucking lightning in a bottle plus a bunch of injury luck. As good as Bob Kraft is, he hit the lottery. He didn’t make a bunch of great decisions.

          • ButtonShoes

You are being too generous with the McCaskeys. If people think they’re fucking the team, the proof is in the play on the field. The way this team loses/collapses on a regular, consistent basis. The McCaskeys admit they need help because they know jack shit about football. They always hire the wrong people, then fire them, and hire more wrong people. This hasn’t been some 5 year stretch of bad football. This has been a consistent pattern of blowing it for at least a quarter of a century. The Wanny years. Dick Jauron. Lovie (yes, Lovie was a mistake considering he was allergic to playing offensive football, getting into the playoffs, and didn’t know what a starting QB was supposed to look like, or cared). Trestman, Now Fox. The McCaskeys are fucking losers, man. And I say that because they fucking lose all the time. They don’t deserve your sympathy – they deserve your scorn.

          • “They openly admit they need help, hire the help and take his advice”

Yes, but it was only a merc, not a guy who can face consequences.

Maybe they should hire FOOTBALL guys an not bean counting lackeys like Sweaty Teddy if they really care about the long term success of their team.

Or sell the team to someone who knows how to succeed.

It’s like inheriting your dad’s 57 chevy, but you’re not a car guy, and don’t know how to fix it when it breaks down.

Better off just selling it to a grease monkey who knows what he’s doing.

Or at the VERY least, hire a full time mechanic who gets shit done, and not just random mechanics from the white pages who you’ll never see again.

          • Dis Guy Trublinsky

Why would they sell the team? They’re billionaires because of it.

Why would they fire Phillips? He’s family and making them billions of dollars.

          • That’s exactly why fans despise the McCaskeys.

They care more about $ than winning.

          • Dis Guy Trublinsky

I hear people say that. Yet to see proof of that. They care about winning or they wouldn’t keep paying overlapping coach’s salaries and hiring consultants.

You don’t strike me as the type to regurgitate that tired old line.

          • willbest

I would also add if they really cared about money they would break their lease with the Chicago Park District, and build a pleasure dome in one of the suburbs Jerry style.

          • Dis Guy Trublinsky

I’m a little oblivious to all of that.

I just fail to see any evidence that they’re cutting corners on spending.

          • A lot of times, it’s not just about $ with these aristocrats, but about prestige and fame.

Without the Bears, the McCaskeys are just Paris Hilton.

          • CanadaBear

You’re just making shit up now. The McCaskey’s are the anti-Paris Hilton. The last thing they want is publicity.

          • What I mean by that without the prestige of the Bears, the McCaskeys are just another trust fund baby riding on the glory of their grandparents.

If you want to say, the DuPonts, that could work too.

          • From what I hear, George does care. I don’t think anyone truly knows.

Which would mean George is simply incompetent as opposed to apathetic.

Either way, the results speak for themselves.

          • SC Dave

            Why the fuck shouldn’t they?

          • Winning and $ shouldn’t be mutually exclusive.

            Look at Jerrah.

          • BearDown100393

Making billions serving Papa John’s quality.

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

The Giants just hired the same guy to help find a coach and GM. Panthers hired him a couple years ago to find a GM. The Lions hired him to find their GM 2 years ago.

This is how he is making money. If he is not doing a good job people would not hire him.

NOTE: I personally don’t like him.

          • Accorsi from what I know has been a Giants guy since forever.

            He’s invested over there.

He has little connection with Halas other than the $ they paid him.

      • BuddhaJoe

Exactly what I’m saying. Extreme example, but hypothetically if Belichik came in and wanted both of them gone, then happy trails motherfuckers. Obviously won’t go down like that but you get the point.

  • Finally turned on 670 the Score for the first time since like Sept.

    Laurence Holmes seems pissed. Surprised.

    He’s usu vanilla.

He played Olin Kreutz calling out Howard for running out of bounds and essentially dogging it.

Hard for me to believe that Howard would dog it esp since he was playing with one shoulder before the bye.

I think that shoulder might be acting up again.

If it is, we need to shut him down.

    • BerwynBomber

Holmes in now hosting Bears Post-Game live on Comcast TV. Wonder if he’s pumping up the emotion for ratings.

      • Dis Guy Trublinsky

I used to really like Holmes. He was the first guy to bring Mat Bowen to the Score if I remember correctly.

Don’t listen much anymore. Most of my available time was during the Boers and Bernstein show on my way home. That grew really old.

        • BerwynBomber

True about B&B but somehow it is even worse with Jason Goff. Never cared for Goff. His faux street cred shtick doesn’t work for me.
Holmes is okay. But he doesn’t make me laugh. Short of Bowen, or a really hot even unpopular take, I need to be entertained if I’m listening to sports radio at any length.
Dan McNeil did that for me. North, too, to a point. But that’s about it.

    • SC Dave

Fuck Olin Kreutz. Any asswipe that fucking cold-cocks a teammate does not deserve an audience.

      • SC Dave

That being said (and yes, it was necessary), I commented in the JW post-game thread that it looked like Jordan had mailed it in a little in that game.

He *did* run out of bounds, and it surprised me. Just how *bad* has it become that Jordan Howard runs out of bounds?

Fuck… it just pisses me off more about that cocksucker Kreutz. Shut your ugly pie-hole, asswipe!

        • BerwynBomber

He was an asswipe. But he was our asswipe. One of those types.

      • BerwynBomber

The other thing that gets me about Kreutz is that he fucking hated the media when he was a player. Now he is part of the media? Though, to a degree, one could say the same about Lach.

      • CanadaBear

You have no idea what happened before Fred got decked. Don’t forget, Fred hit Olin in the head with a plate from the free weights.

  • willbest

Firing Pace because Fox is the HC seems a bit silly to me. You are basically subscribing to the theory that a guy that has been on the job for a week that has never been a apart of a coach hiring process should somehow be required to get that pick right. (Pace was a professional personnel scout when Payton was hired and wouldn’t have been a part of that process)

That is why I find it inconceivable that he was the driving force behind Fox getting hired. The guy goes James Bond and secret meeting/scoutting secessions for Trubisky, and signs Glennon to throw off the scent, and he hires Fox on a lark?

His plans may be bad, or silly, but its clear he does the planning. And since he didn’t hire Fox, what are the odds that he is allowed to fire fox without George’s permission?

    • Malice Halice

Unfortunately Fox is da scapegoat for this season with good reason. Whether Pace hired Fox or not, our seasons under him are all losing seasons with no arrows pointing up. It’s worse when you have a 2nd overall qb not playin up to par like the past 3yrs of top 2 qb’s drafted. Nothing is adding up for neither of the 2 guys mentioned.

      • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

Which 1st round QBs has he not played up to if you look at their first years?

        Goff 1st year… sucked.
Wentz had a few good games to start the season then the rest of the year was a crap shoot
Prescot, entered a pretty ideal situation with a strong line and rushing attack.
        Watson Hurt
        Mahomes on bench
Winston and Mariotta did not exactly set the NFL on fire.

        • Malice Halice

Yea u right, these past 1st round qb’s been quite bland their rookie year. But still….

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

The fact is that almost all rookie QBs have pretty bland first years. That is one of the main reasons I wanted Trubs to start the year, that and I knew Glennon was awful. Get the bland year and rookie mistakes out of the way.

        • BerwynBomber

I’d argue both Wentz and Mariota were significantly better in their rookie years than Bisky.

But otherwise agree with your overall point.

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

one big difference is both their coaches let them play.

          • BerwynBomber

Another big difference is that those guys were a ton more seasoned than Bisky. (And better athletes, though Bisky has a better arm.)

    • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

agree. Pace may have approved the Fox hire. But look at the situation. The owners and the consultant that hired you, already interviewed several coaches before you were hired. They brought in Fox and from all reports everyone liked him. Do you rock the boat in your first week on the job? The team was already a steaming pile and needed stability.

And as for firing the coach, he has to get sign off from ownership. It is the McCaskey’s money Pace is playing with.

    • ButtonShoes

If Pace didn’t pick Fox and agreed to have him as his HC, that’s an indictment of his ability and even more reason to fire him. Today. I don’t care if he’s a rookie GM. If you’re going to be GM, you assert your control over the team from the very, very beginning. The first thing he should’ve said to the Bears when they told him this was “the only way I’m going to be GM of this team is if I get to pick my own coach. I get full control, period.” It’s a gigantic black mark on his resume if Pace personally picked and selected Fox, but at least you could say that he took a shot on someone he personally believed in, instead of someone forced on him by dumb ownership.

      • willbest

I am going to go out on a limb and presume you have never been in a room with a billionaire applying for a job with a compensation pack north of 15 million. I am not saying you completely sell your soul out, but pragmatism might be the order of the day.

        • ButtonShoes

I can understand Pace saying “OK” to that offer. I probably would have done the same in his place. I’m just saying it was wrong if he did.

          • willbest

But its George’s team. So George should fire Pace for trying to accomodate George? That doesn’t make any sense. And yes the whole point of George getting Ernie is because he doesn’t know what he is doing. But then Ernie is giving Fox the seal of approval and Pace (who received the Ernie seal of approval 7 days prior) has to tell George, lets go a different direction?

          • ButtonShoes

Well if Pace is accommodating George by hiring Fox, then he’s just making things harder on himself, isn’t he? Hiring a coach he had no real say in hiring? So how does that make Pace look better. And obviously George doesn’t fire Pace for accommodating him. Because George is an idiot and hiring a GM who would be willing to do that is perfectly fine with him.

And if Ernie’s the guy hiring both Pace and Fox, then why isn’t Ernie just running the team? Because if his seal of approval is so important, then he’s the football guy who should be running things. Otherwise, you let the consultant hire the GM, and the GM hire the coach. Isn’t that how it goes, or am I wrong on that?

          • willbest

He was brought in to do both. I posted the time line last week and they interviewed a couple coaches before they even interview Pace.

          • ButtonShoes

Then that was stupid. I had always thought that Accorsi was brought in to get the GM, and then that GM would be allowed to select his own coach. And around the time they made the Pace hire I got the impression that Fox was Pace’s pick.

          • Cubsnlinux

The Fox hiring may not be linear. It is not unusual for Interviewes come to meetings with candidates they would hire if selected. So Pace may have mentioned Fox as one of the few he would bring in if selected. After the interview and after Georgie and Ernie exchanged notes Georgie would have called Pace and said well of the people you mentioned we think Fox would do great as our HC and Pace would have said Ok. So technically it is still a Pace hire. The 7 day timeline means nothing.

      • BearDown100393

3 years on the job is not exactly a rookie.

  • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

    Bears sign Mike Nugent.

  • Juan Stone

I am not getting all the righteous indignation by some posters. Trust me, nobody’s getting axed because the fans are pissed. Yes, some heads will roll but not until some likely candidates are courted and who ever is in charge feels the time is right.

Does it really make a difference if you wipe your ass while you’re up to your ankles in shit?

    • ButtonShoes

We’re angry. When you’re angry, sometimes you want to vent. Luckily, we’re allowed to do so here. So we do. I don’t know how productive it is (probably not at all), and it definitely has no effect on the team, but it’s the only thing we can really do.

  • BerwynBomber

Some Bears or Bust sentiments expressed in the thread. Gotta admit if the Bears disappeared tomorrow the Shield would still have a sucker in me.

Would suck losing a hometown interest as well as this blog, but I love football too much and am a bit of mercenary when it comes to fandom.

Hell, I even like TNF. I am baffled when DBBers (and others) complain about it.

    Which reminds me … PIT/CIN …

    • I may start slowly moving to see more Ram games.

I’ve always kinda liked them before they took off to ST Louis. They were always like the red headed step child of L.A. along with the Clippers.

Back then, the Raiders were also in town, so it was all about them.

But the Rams were in L.A. since like the 50s. And Eric Dickerson was pretty awesome.

I might adopt them as my 2nd team with the Goff/McVay regime going forward.

If the Bears keep up the skull fuckery the next 3 yrs, I may just join the dark side.

The NFL will likely end in 20 yrs anyways, so, fuck it.

      Surfs up, MB!

Anyone catch Brady chewing out McDaniels yesterday? Wonder, if on a national level, any other QB would get a pass from the media and fans for that.

Actually, the only other guy who seems capable of going total red ass like that is Rivers.

    • Malice Halice

“Is Tom Brady gonna have to slap a bitch?”

    • EnderWiggin

“Tell Martz I said ‘FUCK YOU’!”
Although it was from the huddle, I always think of this every time a QB gets bitchy.

      • BerwynBomber

But Cutty was merely petulant. And I always picture Cutty saying that out of the side of his mouth in an exhausted, don’t care sorta way.

Going total red ass and in someone’s face is a whole different thing. That’s Brady. (And maybe Rivers.)

Btw, I’m not really bashing Brady for it — hell, it’s an emotional, violent game — I just don’t know if any other QB in the league gets a pass on it from fans and the media.

        • The thing is when Brady does it, it’s translated into competitive, passion, demanding perfection.

He’s earned that rep through years of excellence.

When other QBs do it, it’s typically interpreted as bitching cuz they haven’t earned the same rep.

          Jordan was sorta the same.

Also, NOBODY is going to feel bad for McDouche getting screamed at.

        • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

Ben Roethlisberger didn’t like his OC a couple years ago and was seen on a couple occasions yelling at each other on the sidelines.

It seems from all reports that the reason Fox is still HC at the Bears, is that no one else on the coaching roster wants to take on the role

What an indictment of management across the board , tells you how inept they were putting together this coaching team ( not to mention the actual players on the field )

    • willbest

No, he’d merely ban certain posters.

    • EnderWiggin

    • willbest

Move the team to another city would be the obvious one. I guess there is all kind of non-football illegal shit they could be doing, that would cause me to boycott the bears until the franchise is sold. Walk away through awful performance? Nothing about moral high ground. Burfect has tried to ruin careers and put guys in the hospital. Go back and watch his horse tackle of L. Bell a few years ago (where Bell tore his ACL) and tell me what his intent was.

Brown has reportedly offered to pay Schuster’s fine. If he didn’t, I’m guessing some guys around the league would pitch in.

I’m no fan of the Steelers. But I’m a fan of Burfect a helluva lot less. He’s a league menace.

  • I’m always curious why team don’t use like one guy who’s like 7’2 to block FGs, esp long ones.

Just get some Bball C reject to jump as high to block it.

    • willbest

Well inside the 25 the launch angle makes that moot. So really you are just using him in situations where they are kicking from 40 or more yards. I would presume they have a better use for a roster spot. Now if that guy could also learn how to long snap, he would be set for life.

      • Yeah, but 25yders are a given, no matter what Fox believes.

But most game winning FGs I would bet are 40 out.

And a K seeing a 7-2 dude on the other side ready to block those low line drives might get into their heads

Seems like better use than say 5th WR

    • Irish Sweetness

Keep a spot for a blocker, why not? We have long snappers … that would just be the equivalent on the other side of the ball. Balance your phases. Good idea.

  • Irish Sweetness

The Bengals lost to the Steelers probably because William Jackson sidestepped Le’Veon Bell allowing him to tiptoe down the Bengals’s sideline and score. He then turned around and ate out the the other DB for not knocking him out of bounds prior to his matador impression. Unbelievable.

    http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/2017120400/2017/REG13/Steelers@Bengals?icampaign=scoreStrip-globalNav-2017120400#menu=gameinfo%7CcontentId%3A0ap3000000888382&tab=videos

    • That Guy

Woah. He “ate out the other DB”? Was this a football game or a porno?

      • Scharfinator

They said it was a particularly physical game on Monday… didn’t think they meant it like that though.

    • BearDown100393

      Bengals be Bengals.

  • BerwynBomber

Hah! I loved Big Ben’s first response to Salter. “AFCN football.”

  • Irish Sweetness

Oh man I’m, in love. We can get this Barkley guy. 5’11 230lbs?? Are you kidding me? I haven’t seen anyone that big and fast since Bo. We don’t need to worry about Mitch with this guy on our team.
Jordan’s not a breakaway back and doesn’t have great hands. This guy can break the long one, catch, throw, he does it all.

    • They already have 2 good RBs on the roster.

They have far bigger needs pretty much anywhere else on the roster, especially OLB (where they have nothing opposite Floyd) and OT (where there is zero depth and they need to eventually upgrade Massie). Spending a top 10 pick on a RB would be even dumber than spending another top 10 pick on a WR.

      • willbest

irish’s philosophy of football is you can never have enough elite talent at the RB position. 6-7 guys back there. it doesn’t matter as long as they all get 18 touches a game

        • Big Mike

and slow white receivers 🙂 Love you Irish

        • Irish should be loving this season.

A lot of times we got TWO HBs on the field at the same time with Howard and Cohen.

          3 if you count Burton

          • Irish Sweetness

Should have been Butrtion/Howard the whole way if that’s what they were doing.
The fun we could have had from the I-form ….

      • Irish Sweetness

We don’t have ANY back like him though. Jordan breaks outside and then gasses after 20 yards. No hands. Benny has hands, no size. This dude is 230. That’s amazing. We could grab the OT in the second.

        • and what are they gonna do at OLB then? Hope a 33 year old Willie Young stays healthy and productive?

I don’t see any scenario in which they draft anything but OLB in round 1. There’s absolutely nothing there in FA and they have absolutely nothing opposite Floyd.

    • Haha. I was wondering when you get around to finding him!

They say he’s gonna be better than Zeke.

      But #1 priority is Trub.

      Protect him and find weapons.

We desperately need a pass rush too.

      Outside Floyd, we got zilch.

  • BearDown100393

As much as I love tough tackling hard nose football, I hate watching these players carted off the field. Really does not matter who it is, I just hate the high risk component.

Last night was a throwback game for the ages.

    • Dave Fauxb

Really worried about Shazier, but his hit wasn’t dirty.

He just went in with the crown of his helmet down. #1 no-no they drill you to avoid since day 1 in pads.

I remember Hardin used to do that all the time, and MB and I would wince cuz that’s extremely dangerous esp at that level.

      • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

Was Hardin even on the field long enough to use the crown? I know Meriweather always led with the crown.

        • Yeah, he played a few in PS if I remember correctly.

Swole also did it, but it looked to me like he would do it on purpose to knock a foo out.

Hardin looked like he never played S in his life (and I think he was a converted CB, so maybe that was part of it)

  • leftcoastdave

Jeff: “But if Gould had missed the final field goal it would have meant nothing. Game still would have been awful for Bears.”

    • Dave Fauxb

What’s a laughing stock is that Fox said they didn’t take an early timeout and save 90 seconds because they were playing for the FG block.

That made the Score and everyone in the press laugh, it made Briggs go nuts on CSN, made Kreutz question their sanity.

You were playing for the FG block? You didn’t block the first 4 FGs! And the game winner was the shortest kick of them all!!!!!!!!!!!!

You had some super secret FG block play even though the kick was 20 yards which everyone knows is basically unblockable, and you were holding out to play for the block? Are you fucking kidding us?

I think that comment made a lot of people mad.

  • DaCoaches Mustache

Who is worse, Michael or George McCaskey?

    • willbest

Based on results wouldn’t it be George? I know he seems to care more about the team, but the Michael era produced an elite defense, 4 division titles, 2 NFCC appearances, and an SB appearance. The George era ushered in the end of the dominant D of the previous generation, the hiring of the worst GM/HC pair in franchise history, a season that would be better suited for the Lifetime or Hallmark channel than anything related to sports, followed by the plodding listlessness of that last 3 years.

    • CanadaBear

Hard to say. Michael fell into a bed of roses and turned it into a pile of manure. George started with a lot of weeds in the garden and now it’s overgrown. George is certainly more likeable.

      • willbest

He took over in 1999, and the team wasn’t exactly primed for greatness at that point. Of course there is the question of what he actually did besides be the figurehead. Philips is the one who brought in Angelo.

George took over in 2011, which was pretty much the high point in the last 30 years. At least until Cutler broke his thumb and it turned into the last hurrah of the team Michael “oversaw” the creation of.

        • CanadaBear

Mikey was the figurehead during the SB run and was put on double secret probation by Virginia when he fucked up the McGinnis hiring and had to settle for Jauron. George took Mikey’s place after that.

    • If you combine both, you get George Michaels, so they can’t be that bad?

    • Irish Sweetness

Michael looks like a chode. George looks like a decent skin.

  • Sactowns#1

Again- for everyone banging the “Fire Pace” drum, exactly who was our kicker in Sundays game? Whose decision was that?

    • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

Santos. He kicked 2 XP without a problem.

      • willbest

But in the 2nd half they had Pod standing at the net like he was going to kick field goals. So something happened

        • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

re-injured his groin. It’s a good thing Fox coached us to not get into FG range in the second half.

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

I just noticed that POD did all the kickoffs on Sunday. So Santos must have been hurting before the game even started. POD actually did decent on the kickoffs. 2 touchbacks and 1 return. But all 3 were at least 5 yards deep into endzone.

          • CanadaBear

He strained his groin in warmups. Which reminds me of a funny story about Liberace and Letterman. Dave asked Liberace about the only show he ever missed in his life. Lee said he pulled a groin muscle. Dave replied, “Your own”? Liberace laughed at least as much as anyone in the audience.

          • willbest

I am kind of surprised that a FG kicker isn’t require to be at least minimally competent at punting and vice versa. I know they moved it back, but your punter should be able to make about 80% of extra points, and your kicker should be able to punt it 30 yards at at the sideline.

          • Dis Guy Trublinsky

Sometimes our punter can’t punt it 30 yards at the sideline.

So to recap. You let go of a historically accurate kicker, brought in a bum, released said bum, signed a known injury, he gets injured, you now bring in guy form the street.
if people cant see how horribly mismanaged this team is I really cant help them.

      • willbest

Robbie needed to go. His solutions since then have been … subpar

        • Sactowns#1

That makes no sense. “Robbie needed to go” – to what end? Why?
“we couldn’t franchise Alshon” – why not? You paid more to a bunch of guys who stink (Glennon, Sims, every WR).

          • willbest

He lost his edge. And if you want proof, he was a mid season replacement the year after we cut him. He didn’t have a job to start the season. It took the Giants kicker beating his wife for Robbie to get a job. And he found himself cut at the end of the season because he less than 90% on extra points.

          • SC Dave

            Misplaced, not lost.

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

          • Sactowns#1

And if you are saying people need to go or cant be signed then you need to have a concrete plan to replace them. if you cant come up with a plan then you need to keep them on the roster.

          • willbest

If Robbie looks like a JAG kicker (which was the consensus of the league in 2016), then why does your plan to replace him need to be better than a JAG kicker at 1/3rd the price?

          • Irish Sweetness

18M would be an awful lot of money to pay someone to not be thrown at though.

I just looked at the playoff bracket… why do two of our teams already have points? Because we finished 1st or?

      • I’ve said this a MILLION times, but I’ll say it again.

The league gives a 6 point advantage to the winners of their division.

You won the Buffone div, so 6 points
I won the Buddy div, so 6 points

It’s basically a TD homefield advantage.

It’s a good way to keep teams playing till the end of the reg FF season, and also dissuades some shannigans.

For instance, it’s been known to happen that maybe a team will intentionally lose the last game to face a weaker team in the playoffs.

This way, if they’re still playing for a 6 point advantage, none of that.

It was the same set up as last yr.

          • evantonio

Like going from Thomas Jones to Cedric. Or Greg Olsen to Kelley Davis. Or Alshon to Kevin White. You don’t move ahead unless there’s a solid plan in place!

      • Big Mike

I’m here, but I’m out of energy. Can’t find positives. It’s like coaching the scout team vs the Varsity. Not expected to win. Just giving the other side a good look. In fact the comparison is more spot on than you would imagine. Scout team (JV) not allowed to game plan, you’ve got a few real solid players, but quite a few who will never see the field on varsity (le-blanc, cooper jr, 1 legged mcphee, old ass Lamar Houston, most of our WRs etc), your told to run or pass so the other team can get a good look, you can’t audible, you rarely have the same offensive line week to week.

Yep. The Bears are the NFLs JV squad, homecoming game, out of conference pay game..

  • Dave Fauxb
    • I’m not sure what more the league can do to prevent stuff like this.

The game is a heated rivalry with a history of hard (and cheap) shots.

And it still has some of that baseball eye-for-an-eye element to it.

You hit my batter, I’m gonna hit yours.

When Ju-Ju stood over Burfict after knocking him out, it was open season for retaliation.

That’s just the way it is.

I’m actually shocked no one drop-kicked Gronk when he pulled his WWF elbow driver.

If I saw that as a Bills player, I would’ve ran over full speed and cracked his bad arm.

I guess the NFL can get draconian and suspend a helmet to helmet hit for 4 games, but in the heat of the battle, ppl don’t tend to think of consequences.

That’s why the death penalty doesn’t deter shit.

      Playas gonna play.

      • BerwynBomber

Yeah, much ado in my book. And I honestly don’t think it would have been much a story if Schuster hadn’t stood over Burfect, which got Gruden’s and McDonough’s panties in a twist.

But yup, PIT/CIN and PIT/BAL are hard-hitting, nasty rivalries. SEA/SF had that feel too with even the HCs — Harbaugh and Carroll — detesting each other.

        • evantonio

Was thinking about Zach today. How easily we forget.

    • Sactowns#1

I was thinking about him when I was recapping the draft in my mind. you have Miller (solid) and pay boat loads to Sims because you think he’s a stud. So why draft a TE in the second round when there are so many other needs? It’s almost like Pace doesn’t know what he’s doing.

      • SC Dave

I agree, but for a different reason.

Why get Sims? Shaheen should lose at most two snaps a game for that guy.

        • evantonio

Sims was the smokescreen for Shaheen like Mike was smokescreen for Mitch. Paying dividends in both scenarios!

        • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

Sims reminds me of Brandon Manumaleuna. Brought in to block, but can’t, and has stone hands.

Then again, Kellen Davis looked like Tarzan, played like Jane.

          • willbest

That was the move I understood the least about FA this season. We gave starting TE money (6 mil a season) to a guy that had 74 catches on his resume after 4 years. It wasn’t even a Pace value pick up. Whoever Pace has evaluating WRs and TEs for this team needs to go.

      • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

there was no guarantee that Miller would have made it back this year, because the injury last year.

      • Irish Sweetness

Agreed. His signings and the general melee surrounding Pace are becoming less than impressive. He can’t seem to spot talent himself, he’s relying on others to find players, and they’re not very good at recognizing skill?

Nobody can justify the Shaheen drafting using a second rounder. Not with the need on the OL.

      • BerwynBomber
