Super Bowl Preview Volume II: Why I Have No Problem With Greatness Prevailing

| January 31st, 2017

There is nothing, absolutely nothing, I hate more than fluke champions. It devalues everything I long for from the Chicago Bears; everything that brings me to the keyboard each and every day. I’m not arguing the Atlanta Falcons would be a fluke champion should they win the Fantastic Football Foray. Far, far from it. But the most definitive reason why I have no problem with Bill Belichick and Tom Brady winning their fifth championship together is simple: greatness.

The Patriots of this era are the most brilliantly run organization in the history of professional sports. Don’t give me the heyday Celtics or late 70s Steelers or late 90s Yankees or Jordan Bulls or one of those hockey franchises that wins a bunch. Every one of those aforementioned runs had a talent advantage on the opposition. Their guys were better than the other guys. They won because they should win.

The Patriots operate at a time where championship continuity is seemingly impossible. They let solid veterans walk out the door and turn castaways into household names. Rob Gronkowski done for the year and maybe longer. Who cares? They lose their Hall of Fame quarterback and still win. They lose his backup and, guess what, they don’t lose.

The Patriots have Tom Brady. And Tom Brady is great. But how many times have the Patriots had the most talented roster in the conference, let alone the entire NFL? Their current defensive roster, the league’s best scoring unit, is nowhere near as talented as the reigning champs in Denver. Their skill players on the offensive side pale in comparison to the group they demolished a week ago from Pittsburgh.

But they are great because of Brady. And Belichick. And Ernie Adams. They are great and if they win their fifth championship Sunday, I will applaud them. They deserve it. Theirs is the success of which all fans should dream.

        Well played Jerigthorpe

Is it bad that I thought Huge Bear Penis was you, Waffle?

          My bad. Lol

            Yuuuge

  • BearDown100393

    Organizations win championships. Sounds familiar.

    • MB30SD

Why does it sound even remotely familiar?

  • Artoo

Exactly what I want in Chicago. Not just one Super Bowl but as many as possible. No one in the National Football league through past 15 years have been this great this long.

“Theirs is the success of which all fans should dream.”- Jeff

    Exactly, Jeff. Nothing less.

    • Big Mike

Artooooo Where you been. Wouldn’t it be nice. I still am pulling for the Falcons. But I don’t disagree with what Jeff wrote. In a parity obsessed league, The Patriots have defied the physics of the league.

      • Artoo

It’s the coaching staff. I can’t see anything else that really makes a difference.

The Patriots have whiffed on draft picks and signed free agents that turned out to be duds.

Lose their starting quarterback, best offensive weapon, and it doesn’t faze them.

We need that in Chicago. Desperately.

        • MB30SD

We’ll never have that… No one will. Unless the Darth hoodie decides to defect for whatever reason.

          Won’t happen

          • Artoo

I wouldn’t mind giving up four first round draft picks for Bill.

He’s that good and I know he can live without them.

            One day. One day.

          • MB30SD

It would take aot more than that meboy.

Most likely a ton of picks plus George teddy and Ginnie’s souls I’d imagine.

          • Artoo

I’m cool with giving those up. The Dark side is very costly but the Powwwwaaaaaaaer!

Bill won’t leave though. Anything that could potentially damage his legacy is something he will avoid.

Why didn’t we hire him after he left the Browns? Kind of answered my own question there.

          • MB30SD

Yep, because we’re the Chicago bears

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

            Deal!

        • Huge Bears Penis

yes just the coaching staff that wins games no other reasons…
          1. Filming Rams walk throughs(original spygate).
          2. Tuck rule
          3. spygate
          4. deflategate.
          5. abusing Injury Reports.
          6. Headset.
          7. Fire Alarm.
          8. opposing coaches backpacks mysteriously swapped out during press day.

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

Quite, old boy. It’s quite handy to be able to trot out the Patriots erra year or so for a subliminal shot of nationalism, specially during dark times as these.

        • Big Mike

They’ve hit on a better than league average share of their draft choices. That helps. I’m a believer in Pace, Fox and Fangio. I might be in the minority. But I saw this season as an outlier relative to the trajectory of the recovery plan. The Bears, were left a shambles by chasing glory with Lovie and an aging team. 2006, led to hanging on, which led to false hope in 2010 and a combination of foolishness and bad drafts from 2010 to 2014. Not to mention the gut wrenching, soul draining, pride burying Emery/Trestman debacle. “We knew he shouldn’t be a head coach in the league after about 4 practices” Lance Briggs.

Anyhow in my view this team was an 8 win team if they stayed healthy this year. 6 wins last year, 8 this year 10 next year. Being optimistic, losing all those games and picking up the 3rd pick was a godsend. Now all they have to do is crush this draft and add a few pieces in Free Agency and we’re a playoff team.

          • Artoo

Until we have consistency at the quarterback position, don’t hold your breath. They are close.

Which reminds me, anyone else here the Rivers to Chicago rumors?

I wish we could get Brees.

          • MB30SD

            Hear

Fuck that whiney little bitch. I will stop watching the bears if that happens

          • Bender McLugh

no you wouldn’t! Because he’d be an upgrade over Cutty……………and Cutty’s longtime rival to boot

          • MB30SD

            He’s turrible.

And my dick is an upgrade to cutty. That’s no measuring stick.

          • Bender McLugh

thank god no I didn’t see

          • Artoo

Fox loves Vets and Rivers would fit the bill.

Honestly, if the Saints would have fired Sean, Sean and Brees would both go somewhere together.

            Chicago would’ve been nice.

not arguing on that. all those reasons I believe were done by coaching staff or with their direct knowledge.

    • MB30SD

I agree. And don’t care. Don’t think it gave them an edge they needed.

Although, the fire alarm was a really shitty one.

  • One Dump from Retirement (GP)

The Red Auerbach Celtics had talent but not super talent. They won on coaching and prep work much like the Pats.

    • BerwynBomber

      Good comp …

      • One Dump from Retirement (GP)

Thanks. Jeff said the heyday Celtics were not in the same league as these Pats. I disagreed.

        • BerwynBomber

Yeah, I admittedly skimmed this one today … for now at least …

          • Bender McLugh

“I never lost a game, I just ran out of time” – MJ

          • Huge Bears Penis

That is one of the stupidest things I have ever read. If MJ actually said that he is a damn idiot.

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

I’m sure one of his handlers came up with that.

          • Bender McLugh

            hahah I thought it hilarious

          • One Dump from Retirement (GP)

Pippen scored pretty effectively. he was mister triple double and usually 2nd on the score sheet. It wasn’t coming from John Paxson or BJ Armstrong, and Cartwright was lucky to get 6-8.

MJ was a singular talent on O, though. Unstoppable.

          • BerwynBomber

Yeah, Pip was, what, a career 16 point scorer? Could post-up a little, had a nice bank shot from the wing and was fantastic on the break, but in the half court he had no game off the dribble.

Don’t forget Luc Longley’s superior talents.

Kidding aside, even as integral as Rodman was to the second three-peat, he was to some degree a one dimensional player.

Anyway, interesting debate … and something I never gave much thought to previously.

          • Johnnywad

It’s hard to make the leap from football to basketball. A single great player, like Jordan, can/could take over a game and dominate an opponent with far more impact in basketball than football. A more recent example would be the Cavs championship last year. Golden State was the far superior team. Especially with Love and Irving out. But James just got it done.

Subtract any starting QB from the playoffs and that team likely loses despite any level of coaching and prep. But I don’t think a single player, even a guy like Brady, can win a game of football like a single player can win a game of basketball.

          • BerwynBomber

Of course. The closest thing you see to a one man band in the NFL is Rodgers, Brees and Cam. But even those guys are dependent a good deal more on their respective organizations, coaching staffs and teammates than a mercurial basketball talent is.

          • Huge Bears Penis

Love and Irving were not out for the Cavs championship. They were out in 2015 when they lost.

          • Johnnywad

Holy fuck I skipped a whole season and merged two Finals together. I need to get that looked at.

I still like my theory though.

          • CanadaBear

It’s more or less basic math. 5 players vs 22 players (min).

    • MB30SD

The 80s Celtics… The ugliest team in all of sports history

      • One Dump from Retirement (GP)

Shut the greatest show on Turf down – on the Superdome turf.

Pressured with 4 consistently, and simply jumped all over Warner’s check down guys and took the sidelines away and made those small wide outs go over the middle where they would thump the shit out of them.

Helped they filmed all of Warner’s practices, they knew his plays better than he did.

    • AlbertInTucson

It also helped that Mike Martz thought using Marshall Faulk as a decoy all evening was a great idea.

  • One Dump from Retirement (GP)

Steelers 27-23 over the Cards was the best Super Bowl I ever saw.

That catch to win it should be #1 on the all time list.

    • willbest

I liked both Eli v. Tom ones as well. Especially if you consider the narrative. Ending the perfect season and the denial of revenge.

But I think you are right that was the most enjoyable SB in and of itself since I got back to watching them on the regular 13-14 years ago. 20 is always going to be “the best” though.

      • BerwynBomber

Yeah, those were both good, and the first one especially has to be way high on anyone’s list.

        • CanadaBear

The Cincy/SF SB was a good one.

    • BerwynBomber

DEN/GB is high on my list. Not only for obvious reasons, but the game itself was a back and forth affair that was very entertaining. Plus, DEN was a double digit underdog (which is huge) and old man Elway was finally trying to win one.

Most overrated SB? Rams/Titans. Yeah, came down to the last play of the game, but that thing was an absolute snoozefest the first three quarters.

  • One Dump from Retirement (GP)
    • willbest

If Brady wins this he will be 5-2 in the Super Bowl with only Eli Manning besting him. Do you think that will bother him? Not every day but, you know one day he is walking down the hall and passes the trophy room, catches a glimmer, looks in and just thinks to himself … Fuck Eli.

      • BerwynBomber

True but he also has to feel damn lucky for bagging #4. You know, bless Pete Carroll and Malcom Butler as much as he curses Eli.

    • Sauron’s right eyeball

And that’s why Roger Dodger will make sure the Patriots lose. Evra one knows you don’t tug on Superman’s Cape. Besides, with Trumps election, it’s obviously the year of the hawk.

    • SC Dave

      Fick brady

  • Sauron’s right eyeball

You left out the greatness of Chicken Dinner Jeff. Tsk, tsk.

    • One Dump from Retirement (GP)

      Here’s the irony:

Of all of Bellicheat’s Super Bowl teams, even the undefeated one that Eli bested – this team has the best defense. Even the Rams Super Bowl, with Ty Law’s pick 6 and Rodney Harrison and Mcginnest and Bruschi in his prime.

This team punched the Steelers O in the mouth, slammed their RB into injury and completely out muscled a team that was used to being physically dominant on O.

It wasn’t much of a game to watch, but the Pats beat the living shit out of the Steelers, and I don’t think the Falcons are ready for that much physicality.

And what drove us insane about Chicken Dinner? His lack of aggression. He would NOT come up and make the stick in the hole; he’d sit back and then arm tackle the runner coming out the gap – that’s if he didn’t get backwashed by the guards.

The Pats moved him outside, they could see he had no inside game, as evidenced by that now famous GIF of him running in circles. They manage to use the one element of his game that is decent; seal the edge as the strong side 3-4 OLB. He was ALWAYS a strong side OLB, and that is the ONE POSITION THE BEARS REFUSED TO GIVE HIM. Instead we gave it to Jared fucking Allen and tried to turn Shae into Zach Thomas.

And that is why the Bears suck and the Pats are who they are.

      • Sauron’s right eyeball

        Sigh….say it ain’t so GP, say it ain’t so……

      • MB30SD

        • Bender McLugh

          lmao

      • Artoo

MVPs struggle in the Super Bowl. I see the Patriots doing exactly what they did against the Steelers.

Bill and Brady’s soul have been sacrificed for it.

      • BerwynBomber

Their secondary is superb. Butler has turned into a fuck of a CB. And Chung and McCourtey are one of the best S tandems in the NFL.

        • Bender McLugh

          Logan Ryan! beast

          • BerwynBomber

Yup. And even that King kid seems to make a play ever game I watch of the Pats — not that I see a ton of them.

It’s a helluva unsung unit, largely because there is no star on it.

Early rumors are Neil Gorsuch for Supreme Court. Though supposedly Thomas Hardiman is en route to DC too. Both are are Scalia like in judicial philosophy. I expect Mitchy is going to be forced to finish the job that Reid started and end the filibuster for all Presidential appointees.

They were supposed to be unfettered by the political process.

Of course, the founding fathers didn’t envision life expectancy of there day (36) to more that double, though guys Adams, Franklin and Jefferson lived into their 80s or beyond.

          • willbest

The reason the life expectancy was 36 was because half the people didn’t make it to 5. Its a misconception that 60 year olds were an oddity. They were around even in medieval times.

The other issue back then was the Federal Government had about 97% less power than it does now, so there really wasn’t all that much to get concerned about.

Yeah, lots of lizard people trying to give bith to bird people back then.

Its true butch. We’re led to believe a lot of fallacies. Adam, Abram, Noah just to name a few. It wasnt until vaccines and processed food entered into the picture that people started dying off.

          • willbest

It’s math. Either there were plenty of 60 year olds offsetting all the infant mortality, deaths to war, famine, child birth or the 35 number that people throw around is full of shit.

        • Riiiight. That would just lead to think tanks and partisan organizations figuring out how to convince their base that Judge X was in clear violation of the Constitution because s/he didn’t rule in their favor.

          • AlbertInTucson

            Agree on that.

But they DO need term limits.

          • willbest

The problem is the Legislature stopped checking the power of the other two branches. They could impeach judges. They don’t. They could prevent aggressive use of EO’s by writing cleaner laws. They don’t.

          • Bills used to get passed with a 53-47 majority. Now, because of extra-polarized-bases, fear of losing the next election, and Phil Emery, that game don’t play (minus places where the nuclear option has been employed).

I’d say I miss the good old days, but do we really want to go back to Chester A. Arthur?

          • AlbertInTucson

            Yes.

Over the years, Congress has abdicated much of its constitutional authority and responsibility resulting in what the framers of the Constitution most feared: Imperial Presidencies.

The National Football League has rejected a Super Bowl commercial from nutrition and dietary supplement retailer GNC after Fox Sports officials had approved it. “We sent the spot to Fox… and they cleared it,” Jeff Hennion, GNC’s executive VP, chief marketing & e-commerce officer, told USA Today, who added GNC was later told by Fox that the NFL rejected the spot. Hennion says the NFL objected because two of the company’s products contain two substances on the NFL’s banned substance list. GNC argued to no avail that only 3% of the products sold at the chain’s 6,500 national locations contain those substances and that the commercial was generic and mentioned no specific products. The NFL also bans ads for gambling, tobacco products and topless dancing establishments. Per the GNC spot, NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said, “We have told Fox it may not air it in the Super Bowl or any NFL programming.” GNC says it will run the spot on other TV networks and across other media platforms.

Seems kind of bullshit to me.

      • AlbertInTucson

FOX, trying to sell Advertising, had approved the spot.

The NFL, which already HAS their TV bucks, did the rejecting.

      • Sauron’s right eyeball

What? No titty dancers at half time? How dare they!

    • BerwynBomber

Non-story. I have my issues with a lot of what the Shield censors but this GNC falls in line with stuff from their past. The money quote being:

“The NFL also bans ads for gambling, tobacco products and topless dancing establishments.”

What will be interesting is how they handle the whole OAK to Vegas move.

Silly. But in terms of journalism, much less objectionable than digging into Rodgers’ family life.

Brady should just own it. More than likely, he is a Trump voter. Just admit as much, and move on.

      • willbest

He can’t do that for the same reason Brad Pitt and all the other hollywood heart throbs never say “she’s gotta be a dime” when asked what type of women their interested in.

He lives and works in Boston. He makes tens of millions a year in corporate sponsorship from businesses that don’t want to end up targets of #GrabYourWallet. Plus, Gisele will see collateral damage in her business interests as well.

        • BerwynBomber

Well, he “can’t” in the same way Michael Jordan “couldn’t” openly support Democratic candidates; i.e., they easily could but both are/were hyper aware of their images. (Jordan has since taken more openly political positions than in his playing days.)

But I don’t buy that Brady’s motive is monetary that way that Jordan’s was. He doesn’t move product near that level (though the Giselle blowback is more convincing). Brady is more concerned about his legacy and tends to weasel when he can (see Deflategate). This is why I think he and Kraft and the massholes went ballistic over Deflategate. Were he a .500 QB with no rings I bet he and the organization would have never much challenged the decision.

P.S. I think it’s silly to for a journalist to expect Brady to comment on enacted Trump policy. But I think it’s equally silly for Brady to be dodgy about supporting him.

If it’s mainstream news, it’s fodder for the masses. I’ve seen independent journalistic video footage clips and heard testimonies from too many discharged service men that paints a pretty shitty picture of what’s really going in the middle east. None of it good. The west needs to circle the wagons, bring the troops home and stop meddling in other nations affairs.

I know Gorsuch is another Harvard Law grad, and I was hoping for some diversity in the credential front, but I love this from wiki:

“Gorsuch enjoys being outdoors and fly fishing. He raises horses, chickens, and goats…”

Scalia took Kagan hunting. I wonder if he will impart the wisdom of animal husbandry to the rest of the court.

I beg to differ. I’ll go with the San Antonio Spurs over the Patriots.

The best sports franchise on the planet over the past 20 years.

    • willbest

      Hm… Pop vs. Hoodie…

      • SC Dave

Spurs dont cheat. And their players dont show up on police blotters.

They have/had the best winning percentage of any top league sports franchise over the past 15 to 20 years. Of any sport in any country.

        And five titles.

The sterling example that good men can be the best in the world while still playing fair.

For these reasons, in my mind its no contest whatever. The Patriots just dont rate.

        • Sauron’s right eyeball

Doesn’t everyone in San Antonio worship the devil?

    • BerwynBomber

Good one. Close call. But I think what the Pats have done has been harder simply because one player, even a guy like Brady, can’t dominate the way a great hoops player can. (See: Tim Duncan).

But they are both right there. Who knows, we might be saying the same about the Epstein-led Cubs one day.

The Warriors too, though I think the whole Durant thing makes their winning a bit of a joke.

      • MB30SD

Theo is going to Cleveland to pull a Fucking World Series hat trick, then he’s going to solve world hunger and enact world peace… Then ride off into the sunset with his baseball HOF jacket on.

        • Huge Bears Penis

Theo probably would not be satisfied. My guess is he would try to conquer the NFL by signing on as the Browns GM and bring them to the SB

    Counterpoint: fuck the goddamn Patriots.

And if Shea Fucking McClellan gets a ring my liver will hate me even more than ususal.

  • BerwynBomber

The Pats may end up with more HoFers than Blogfather thinks. Beside Brady (of course), Gronk, Vinateri, Law, Wilfork, Harrison and Mankins will all get strong consideration. Plus, a couple of their annual rental guys — Moss and Revis — will almost certainly end up in Canton.

    • willbest

Gronk might not have the durability

  • Just glossed over the last thread and I’m reminded of college when someone remarked, ” lawyers are the retarded amoral n-laws of philosophers. Don’t believe me, name a famous lawyer from 5000 BC,500 bc, 0. 400 AD 1200 ..”
They’re like the Cargo of thinkers, which actually explains A LOT.

So you agree she should not only have been fired but disciplined by the bar? The facts seem to be worse for her than originally reported. It looks like the EO was reviewed by her staff and found legitimate. She gave no legal justification for her action. It was nakedly political. And she was going to loser her job in a matter of months any. It begs the question if it was done only to advance herself.
