Sometimes There is Nothing to Say

| February 20th, 2017

It is Sunday night, 8:32 PM ET. There is a blank WordPress screen staring back from a $180 laptop, purposefully cheap because at some point an iced coffee or Guinness will be sprinting between keyboard buttons rendering it completely useless. Across from the screen sits a man, twenty pounds lighter than he was 35 days ago, blood steam devoid of alcohol, searching for something interesting to say about the Chicago Bears.

The Bears need a quarterback.

The Bears have a decision to make on Alshon Jeffery.

They Bears need professional contributors in their secondary.

Pass rush is always welcome.

Better edge blocking a plus.

Blah.

Blah.

Fucking.

Blah.

Many people have found DaBearsBlog for the first time in the last year. Our traffic has nearly tripled. So let me state this now as clearly as possible, specifically for you newbies. I’m never going to waste a second of your time just filling space. If something hasn’t actually happened or I don’t have an interesting opinion (at least in my own head) on something Bears-related, you’ll never see posts for the sake of posting.

I don’t care about clicks.

I don’t care about traffic.

Those numbers do one thing for me: allow me to gauge the interest level of the fans at particular times. This season, for example, our site traffic did not decline in December. This was a three-win team playing out the string in front of an empty Soldier Field but our day-to-day traffic remained consistent (and substantial).

What did this tell me? Keep writing. Stay in it. The fans are.

Things will start happening soon, the NFL calendar tells me. And when they do I’ll meet the fight in the OK Corral. Until then? Poll questions, pictures and links. (Or go to my Twitter feed where all I do is waste people’s time.)

Now’s the time Jeff. The Cutler Poll. Do you want to see Cutty as a Bear in 2017 … yay or nay.

We’ve had every variation .. .but not a straightforward Cutty poll. Yay or nay.

    • CanadaBear

      Nay.

      • Sauron’s right eyeball

It’s time to put that cow out to pasture, bring in some new blood, change the guard, turn over a new leaf, put the bed to rest, cut the chord etc, etc, etc. Pip pip.

        • MB30SD

          Cheerio old bean

        • Big Mike

I can go along with this as well. I really don’t care about QB. It’s a flip of the damn coin between Garopolo, the top 3 in the draft etc. Cutler might be better than all of them. Not saying much.

      • Irish Sweetness

The regs we know – but I’ll bet there are more fans that would have Cutty over many of the names mentioned. It would be interesting to see.

        • BerwynBomber

I’m betting you are right. But I don’t know how interesting it would be.

      • DaMurph

        Nay

    • Big Mike

Want is such a powerful word :). Simply put, if the Bears fill their other holes (FS/CB/OT/TE etc) and Cutler came back I’d say OK, let’s give it another go. No expectations, I wouldn’t flip out, because Pace and Fox have looked at every other option and passed.

Do I want this? I don’t know. All these other guys have huge question marks. If I had to pick a favorite option I’d go after Garopolo (sp?) and I might still draft a guy in the 2nd round. If you’re fixing QB why not go all in.

      • Irish Sweetness

Bear in mind they only carry two QBs ….

I find Jeff’s quest for sobriety and a Slim Fast figure strangely compelling reading.

I like Jeff. His human travails and unwillingness to fight petty wars when we call him out on his sloppy opinions, ones formed with a less strident grasp on reality – makes this blog what it is.

I might even join Art of Men so I can go load food trucks for fun. Good job Jeff. Keep it up. You are bizarrely inspiring, you need your own documentary someday.

A bunch of grade school kids threw a 2×4 at a presidential motorcade. I’m trying to envision what my family members would have done to me if I did that. It’s a new world.

    • Huge Bears Penis

I would have been beaten by that same 2×4. And they would have invited the Pres to take a couple wacks also.

      • MB30SD

That would have been fake news

If the police ever called to our door, my pops used to offer me the choice of belt or stick. It was a fair deal.

    • Big Mike

Damn… In my opinion, it’s the whole social media tough guy persona that seeps into reality. But I don’t know. Commenting on that what would have happened is that Big Mike would have gotten an ass whooping from even Bigger Bob (DAD). Then quite possibly he would have turned me in to the police. But in 10,000.000 or maybe an infinity number of versions of my youth, that type of disrespect for the President of the United States simply would not have even crossed mind.

I was no choirboy, there were certainly my share of stupid random acts (cherry bombs, mailbox abuse, etc) but tossing a 2*4 at moving cars.. damn…

      • Malice Halice

We shot bottle rockets at ppl cars on King Dr back in da day when I was like 11 but, ain’t no fuckin way I’m going after the Potus.

    • willbest

See this is my point. Grade school. I am thinking 4th-5th grade. They a middle schoolers so 7th to 8th grade jacked up on puberty hormones. threw a 2×4. That makes me think that they are launching something several feet long. It turns out they were ~4″ scraps of 2x4s.

Its still pretty fucking bad. They should know better, and I am not defending them, but if it were premeditated why not baseballs?

I think they were loitering around or maybe they went there to protest, and somebody got a stupid idea to use shit that was just lying around in the area. To express outrage. Because it would be “cool” and they would be a “hero” at their school where everybody “hates” trump.

      • Waffle

8th graders don’t get to fucking protest anything what in the fuck.

        • willbest

So it was the parents that used the kids to throw the 2×4? Send them to gitmo.

          • Waffle

parents are bringing their kids to pro-choice marches. That is fucked up. It’s a different world. Parents aren’t parents and parents act like kids themselves.

          • willbest

I love kids at pro-choice rallies. It drips with irony.

          • where did i say anything about barron?

i said he specializes in think-speak after you called me orwellian.

can you defend him on this point? i brought these up to waffle but he glossed over the micro points to focus on the larger anti-trump-stance:

announcing a terrorist attack in sweden that never happened (then shrugging it off, saying fox news told him about it)

calling his 306 electoral votes the largest win since reagan (then shrugging it off when confronted with numbers, saying “that’s what they told me”)

forget everything else. i would like to know where you stand on this particular aspect of DJT.

          • willbest

Where is the video of him announcing a terrorist attack in Sweden?

          • the quote from his FL rally in the midst of a spiel on terror attacks and why his immigrant ban should be enforced: “We’ve got to keep our country safe. You look at what’s happening in Germany, you look at what’s happening last night in Sweden. Sweden, who would believe this? Sweden.”

            it’s in here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TkSajyh2_40

          • can’t send them to gitmo. didn’t you hear obama’s closing it? executive order signed and everything!

        • Doc Nitty

They’re at least as smart and well informed as at least half the voting populace who simply vote along party lines.

          • willbest

          • Doc Nitty

Yeah. I’m proud anytime somebody takes a wrench to a rusted broken down machine.

          • Irish Sweetness

An exercise in futility moreso … is it better to exercise one’s “democratic” rights .. .whereby citizens get a choice of this c**t or that c**t, both of whom care not a jot for the people voting for them?

        • we protested the decision to replace french bread pizza with little round personal pies. such a downgrade in taste.

          we got nowhere.

    • it’s a world where the president can announce a terrorist attack in sweden when there was no attack.

it’s a world where a president can claim his 306 electoral college were the largest since Reagan, and when confronted with the truth he can just shrug it off and keep making the claim.

it’s a world where people are seriously debating whether the bears should trade the 3rd overall pick for jimmy g.

it’s a world where people share Occupy Democrat posts on facebook and think those actions will influence the course of history.

      it’s a weird world. that’s for sure.

      • Waffle

At no point in your response did you condemn the action itself. That is troublesome.

        • CanadaBear

Pretty sure that goes without saying.

        • Irish Sweetness

I agree, to use the third pick on Jimmy would be unforgivable. I condemn it thusly …

        • by sharing 4 other things i condemn, i condemned by proxy.

(Oh, I’m I’m with Irish have Cutler one more year to give the rookie QB some time to acclimate, you know, since Cutler is cheap, Pace might have one more year to turn things completely around and hire a new coach…) Oh, btw, how did we not pick up Kevin Greene as our OLB coach!??!?!?!

  • CanadaBear

I’ve been following the Revis story a little bit and the part that doesn’t ring true is that both guys were knocked out for 10 minutes. How did they know how long they were out? Not to mention, 10 minutes is one fuck of a long time to be out. And both of them out the same length of time? Seems like a bit of a stretch. Not saying Revis is innocent. It sounds like one of his friends did the dirty work. I still like the claim that he was looking at real estate at 2:30 AM.

    • willbest

      So shake down?

      • CanadaBear

I have no idea. Not sure anyone has much of a plan @ that time of the morning. You’re probably correct. I’ve seen a few people knocked out over the years and the longest was my bike riding buddy who got run off the road. He was out for about a minute and it seemed like an eternity. When he came to he was woozy as hell, got a ride in the ambulance and cracked the orbital bone around his left eye. Even pro boxers rarely are out for more than a minute.

    • Malice Halice

What is it? Another tax break?

      • willbest

Any money your Roth IRA makes isn’t taxed. What this set up does is allow you to avoid the $5500 annual limit on how much you can stuff into a Roth IRA.

        • Malice Halice

Savage. So even I can set up one. What’s the main difference between a basic IRA tho? Just the fact it’s not taxed if I withdraw?

          • willbest

An IRA doesn’t tax the money you stick in, but taxes when you take out. There are also penalties in addition to taxes for taking money out of an IRA before 59.5.

I generally don’t like regular IRAs (and 401k) because the US tax code has hardly ever been stable. As in it is not necessary a given that your tax bracket later in life will be less than it is now (although there are time value of money considerations at play).

A Roth you stick money that has already been taxed, and no matter how much it grows when you go to take it out, its not taxed. Plus, because you stuck after tax money into it, you can take the money you put into it out without a penalty or a tax. This isn’t a great idea except in an emergency though, because there is a limit to how much you can stick in on an annual basis and you don’t get to replace what you pulled out.

As for this particular loop you could set it up if you had an export business. They were taking advantage of another tax reducing mechanism. Its highly technical and requires paying the lawyer and accountant tax instead of the IRS tax. But what this family managed to do was shelter a couple million dollars into their son’s Roth IRA. Which ordinarily would be impossible.

          • Malice Halice

If eligible, it’s better to set up a Roth instead of the traditional Ira (401k)?

          • willbest

401k’s are a different animal. I am sorry for the confusion. A 401k operates like a traditional IRA, but it is set up by your employer. There are even things called Roth 401ks, but most employers don’t set those up.

IRAs and Roth IRAs are set up by the individuals as an additional retirement vehicle. And I almost always recommend Roth IRA’s unless you are less than a decade to retirement, have poor health, work in a profession which dramatically reduces your life expectancy, etc.

Basically, if you are under 50 and there is no reason to expect you to live fewer than 75 years, its almost always the better option.

          • Johnnywad

    • BerwynBomber

I’m still of the mind the NFL should institute a draft lottery, a’la the NBA. Granted, would only add an extra day or two of interest but would break up the monotony of the draft order. Maybe do it in eights after the SB. Worst eight draw for top eight positions, second worst eight draw for second lowest eight position, etc.

Would also mitigate the chance of teams tanking. Or the Browns ending up with the #1 pick every year.

      • willbest

The NBA has to because getting the guy is such a big deal when you only have 5 players on the court and they are expected to play 2/3rds of the game. Only the QB in the NFL can come close to that level of impact. Also the transition from college to pros is far less predictable

        • BerwynBomber

Doesn’t matter the motive. It draws extra interest and breaks up the monotony (or predictability) of the order.

      • Waffle

I’ve always thought that teams should be granted more salary cap space when it came to re-signing and extending their own draft picks to make it easier to build actual teams through the years. This would create a fierce product and would really grow local fandoms as you could watch the same guys grow into an awesome nucleus in every city. Free agency should be very painful for teams to endure, almost a poison pill and used as a last resort.

        • BerwynBomber

Yeah, but as you know players would scream bloody murder about it. Even NFL players who are arguably the least empowered of the “big four” sports.

          • Waffle

not really though, the players would still get to say “no” to the contract offer. I’m just talking about teams have a little more flexibility to pay the shit out of some guy they actually drafted to compete with other teams that are offering the insane money.
Nothing else changes, just less cap stress when it comes to resigning your own guys that want to stay.

          • Players would be all on board that. Would lead to a higher de facto salary cap.

Like, salary cap now would be the same, but you get an extra $5M you can spend on a homegrown guy that doesn’t count against the cap.

      • BearDown100393

Make it a reality show and air on NFL Network. Think Bachelor.

        • BerwynBomber

You kid but it would be an extra night or two of ratings. For that reason alone I’m surprised Goodell hasn’t climbed over the bodies of a couple of domestic abuse victims to make it happen.

The Bears fate was sealed when George McCaskey refused to move on from Ted Phillips and from John Fox at least in part because I’m certain Phillips was against that. Basically what all that means is “no change at the top” = “no change at the bottom”. Forget about Cutler for the moment. He’s far from the biggest problem this team has.

Pace and Fox had a great draft after some good pickups in FA. Another
year of that success will build upon a solid core and add more youth
            competing at all positions.
Sure, three wins is demoralizing, but the
turnover has been great. The injuries happened, but it gave a good
            opportunity to evaluate the talent.

          • MB30SD

You need to separate fox from pace LCD. Pace is the man behind the moves fox is the guy who went 3-13.

Usually the GM makes final personnel decisions while a head coach makes on the field decisions.

You have information contrary to this very common paradigm?

This isn’t Dallas Dave. Let’s get real here. I’m sure fox has input

Pace is nothing. Pace hired hired hackers from the StL Cardinals to hack into the Patriots computers to get scouting reports.

totally agree with you. Besides the mccaskeys that we can do nothing about, it ALL starts with Ted. The man who PUBLICLY stated that wins don’t matter for this organization.

Get rid of that piece of fucking shit and replace him with someone passionate about this organization and about winning and we just might go from being the fucking Browns north, to what we once were.

      • Irish Sweetness

I’d start with Ted Philips. That’s a really good place to start.

        • MB30SD

    • leftcoastdave

Staying on the field, the defensive backfield was the biggest problem this year. That will likely get a YUGE upgrade from free agency. Second might be the receiving corp generally but more the TE in particular. TE fixes are available in the FA market and focus should be on the blocking side of the equation. Meridith is quite the surprise, Bellamy may well rise to the occasion, White could prove to be the first rounder he was picked at and that may not be a big position issue.
That said, I may be wearing rose colored glasses, but I see a solid team going forward.

      Best middle three with depth?
      Good LB corp?
      Howard?
      Serviceable tackles?

Wants not fixed above? Sure, a monster DE. Otherwise, it is just adding depth and competition.

Plug the holes, then worry about another QB with a draft pick down the board.

      • Waffle

Trevathan is done brah. Mcphee has a degen knee, 2 acl’s for Houston and Willie be old.

Linebacker is way up in the air.

        • SC Dave

Agreed. We need to look there too. Hopefully Kwiatkoski will become sombody, and Freeman is good.

          • Waffle

            Freeman was awesome this year.
Kwiatkowski will be awesome when he somehow turns into a black, ultra fast, mean, quick twitch killing machine that is naturally supposed to be 250lbs.

          • MB30SD

freeman is not good, he’s a fucking animal. Hopefully he got popped for using some one else’s protein powder with a banned whey isolate.

        • CanadaBear

I’m not ready to give up on Trevathan just yet but you might be correct. McPhee is definitely not getting better. He will flash once in a while but he talks a better game than he plays at this point. Houston is gone and Willie still has it up to a point. He’s still a sucker for misdirection. I’m hoping Kwiatkoski steps up but he needs to bulk up some.

          • MB30SD

Yikes! Hanging our hopes on Kwia. Sigh.

Maybe we should get foster @ #3 and be done with it?

The injury that Danny suffered is probably the worst one out there except for the Teddy Bridgewater leg disappearing act. He will be a functioning human being that can run and jump and do everything that normal humans do. It’s the “super human” part of being in the NFL that is the issue. Danny needs his old skill set to be successful and that is my basis for saying that he will likely be found to be diminished as a result of the injury.

My son and I play a PC Game when he’s over, called Insurgency.

It’s much more fun than CoD or Team CoD, it’s a nice blend of Arma semi-realism with more CoD like console shooter play. Plus it’s mouse and keyboard which is better for me and sniping than controllers, albeit the PS4 controller is worlds better than the old PS3 one.

What sets Insurgency apart is that you play a Marine Squad. You have guys with M16s, M4s, you can get into having SF guys on the team with mods and have FALs, HK416s and other weapons – then there are heavies with SAWs and snipers with M14s and M40A1s. You work your way through these cool maps, and you take checkpoints and blow up weapons caches, and the bots come at you. You need complete teamwork to survive. These are the best bots in any game, better than the CounterStrike bots by a long way. Instead of cheating and having snapshots (which is how CS and CS:Go make the bots tough), these bots act realistically – you can come up behind them – and they are sneaky – they work in concert and attack in waves. They duck and go prone, and climb through windows and use stairs and set up their OWN snipers. They throw grenades and use RPGs effectively.

This is by far the best Coop shooter there is right now. The sense of needed teamwork and on the fly cover is great. The enemy will spawn back at your A objective and counter attack you from two directions, you get into these epic shootouts in houses holding off waves of ISIS looking motherfuckers, and it’s a hoot.

On sale on Steam for $3 this week, you should check this game out. Playing with Steam friends is truly Ribeyes for Operators stuff.

    • MB30SD

did you just pimp a fucking PC game?!?!?!

I don’t even know you any more. You are dead to me!

      • Zap Rowsdower (GP)

Oh – I meant to say that Insurgency 2: Sandstorm – was coming to PS4 this Spring.

It started off as a mod community for Valve Source. The game was so good it privatized into a company.

I am hoping that Sandstorm retains those sneaky bots and coop sessions. the intensity is very good. When you only have 2-3 guys like we have had – and you get sick of deathmatching – this is a much better and more fun experience. You only need 2-3 human players and holding off an onslaught of ISIS idiots is a blast.

The PS4 never had that. It was deathmatch or team deathmatch or forget it.

        • MB30SD

what happened to that game we watched where they went into the city with that chick on their team? That looked like a cool game… was that PC too?

          • Zap Rowsdower (GP)

            Dunno. Forgot.

COD: Ghosts is good until Sandstorm comes out.
