Questions For the Potential Glennon Signing

| March 8th, 2017

Spent a day being a prick about this on Twitter. Here are some questions:

(1) Do the Bears believe Mike Glennon to be the future at QB beyond 2017?

(1a) If yes, it will greatly impact their draft strategy. That might be the craziest thing going. If the Bears think one of the quarterbacks in this draft has the potential to be a franchise player there were only two “acquirable” guys that should alter their approach: Jimmy Garoppolo and Tyrod Taylor. Glennon? No.

(1b) If no, it’s fair to say Glennon is at least a more entertaining option that Brian Hoyer. We know exactly where Hoyer’s sky is located. Glennon’s sky is TBD. This is an attempt to be positive.

(2) If the numbers are real, how could a $14 million salary for Glennon in 2017 NOT preclude the Bears from taking a QB in round one? The best case scenario if the Bears take QB in round one is the round one QB starting in September. That would mean the best case scenario is a $14 million backup quarterback.

(3) Is Ryan Pace really willing to risk his job on this guy? Mike Glennon? Really? It just feels so outrageously stupid. I’m not arguing Glennon will stink but the chances of his being a multiyear success story as Bears QB are not very good. Pace has to know that.

(4) So the Bears just really wanted to say goodbye to Jay Cutler, huh?

(5) Does a move like this excite a single fan? Even though the story line was overrated, the team did play to an empty building at the end of the 2016 season. Do the folks at Halas Hall think this signing brings a single person without the last name “Glennon” into the building? It doesn’t.

(6) If he wins, will everybody love him? Yes.

          • MB30SD

            I seriously doubt that dave

  • Patrick Riordan

It really is the least exciting potential signing of the year. There’s no long-term upside, his skill set doesn’t have much of an in-game upside, from an enjoyment perspective… nothing. I dunno. This is weird.

    • Irish Sweetness

      Where are you from Pat?

      • Patrick Riordan

Hi! Grew up in the Chicago burbs (Geneva!), currently living in Florida thanks to a gallon-a-week sunscreen habit. How about you?

  • Patrick Riordan

My hope is this is just a giant empty threat from the front office to fans who say it can’t get any worse than Cutler. “What, didn’t we teach you with Jimmy Pickles? Okay, well then, what about this giraffe guy? Jay doesn’t look so bad now, does he?”

    • SC Dave

Why would the front office care about that? The empty seats were still sold.

  • Irish Sweetness

Where is this Glennon thing coming from? There was an article on NFL.COM saying that the Bears were “the last team chasing Glennon”? Doesn’t that imply that NOBODY is chasing Glennon?

And look at he side profile after that mugshot yesterday. Do we want a QB with a weak chin? Was Glennon in Gummo or Ken Park?

    • Sauron’s right eyeball

It’s all over the twatterverse. Apparently, the Patriots were playing hardball so the Bears decided to go after Glennon.

  • BearDown100393

    “Glennon’s sky is TBD”

Actually it is the length of his neck.

  • Sauron’s right eyeball

Quit bitching about 14 mil. That ranks 23rd out of the 32 starters. Not concerned about the salary only that his contract is a 1yr to 2yr max.

    • SC Dave

With you Trac. Eye agree no more than two years; maybe with a 3rd hear option so if the 2018 draft pick needs another year of prep (or our line stinks and would get him killed) we dont have to search again.

      All presimg, of course, that
      1) Glennon even makes the team
      2) He starts
      3) He does not suck moose wang.

      Hmmm… is that likely?

      • Sauron’s right eyeball

If the Bears sign him and he doesn’t make the team? Wow, that would be bad, really bad.

    • Saruman for America 2020

I wouldn’t pay a guy $14 million to be a transition. That’s like paying a goblin 14 pieces of silver to carry your palantir from Illian to Rohan. You’ve already got 4 orcs who can do that job for you. Maybe they’ll take a day or three longer to make the trip, but they can do it. And one of your orcs, while he’s got a bum thumb, crazy wife, and a metabolic inability to regulate his blood sugar, would cost you less than this long-necked goblin you’re thinking of paying. And in the end, what you REALLY want is a bearded Dunedain with flowing locks, who can carry that Palantir all the way from the Shire to Gondor.

      • Sauron’s right eyeball

You make a compelling argument wormtounge. I’ll have to give it some serious consideration.

    • leftcoastdave

Quit bitching about wasting 14mil on a flyer when you only spend 12mil keeping cutty, barkley and shaw plus a player to be drafted in the 4th while building a team with what’s available today.

      • Sauron’s right eyeball

Not true on Cutty. Spexultation is he’ll earn close to 16 mil with incentives. I think they want a new culture on the team. The money isn’t the issue for me, it’s the terms of the contract. They need to keep it short and simple.

        • leftcoastdave

We only save 12m by cutting him. The rest is dead money.

          • Irish Sweetness

Saving 12M on a 2B dollar organization … by cutting your best QB.

            I just don’t get it.

        • “they want a new culture”

          Exactly.

Cutler is like that rich douchey uncle who invites you to a nice steak house.

On the one hand, it’s FREE.

But the price comes in having to hang with aforementioned douche.

Many on here apparently take the free meal.

          • leftcoastdave

For a year. The cost of not keeping him will be at least $10mil thrown out on a flyer.

          • MB30SD

How about making that flyer poe

          • leftcoastdave

All day and all night long.

          • Captain Obvious

Exactly. This is what I don’t get for all the people who want to dump Cutler.

WHO OUT THERE IS GOING TO BE SO MUCH BETTER WE HAVE TO HAVE HIM?

Tyrod? Sure. Get him, then. Jimmy G? Sure. Get him, then.

Glennon??? This guy is NOT the answer at QB. Neither is Hoyer. Neither is Cutler. If you aren’t getting Tyrod, Jimmy G, or somehow finding the absolute perfect guy in the draft in the first 2 rounds, whoever is under center next year is just a temp. And the difference between “Bad Jay” and “Good Hoyer” is maybe the difference between 5-11 and 8-8. So if you’re taking a pass on actually having a good QB, why not Cutler? He’s cheaper than Glennon — or comparably cheap — and you don’t go through this BS with bringing in a new guy. Seriously, unless Pacebot 6000 has some secret inside info on what pins to stick in his giraffe voodoo doll, Glennon is going to be JAG at QB. And if you want JAG, we already have one of the biggest jags in the league to be JAG.

        • MB30SD

          Bingo

    • BerwynBomber

Correct. It’s about the length of guaranteed money and the amount of the guaranteed money. My first guess is something like 22M for two years. It is a bit steep but if they draft a second round or later this year, or a first next year, at most you are only looking at one high-priced QB year (Glennon’s second year). And if your 2018 first looks like the goods you tell Glennon goodbye or sign him to cheap back-up money.

I do find it amusing that Jeff and all his Cutty-loving friends (namely, Jahns and Hoge) are trying to make a hay out of the contract money in comparison to Jay’s. Never heard a peep out of these folks in ’14 when Jay was shitting the bed and pulling in the highest QB salary in the league.

      • leftcoastdave

I don’t love Jay. I just see the money being wasted. Maybe if you hate Jay, it don’t matter. Spend that money where it helps, not on a stoopid flyer. D-Fence!!!!!!!

        • BerwynBomber

He is cheaper than Jay. If you want to truly save money, you go the Hoyer route.

          • leftcoastdave

No he is not. Period, end of story. Nobody can be cheaper. Cutty is under contract for this year only. We save $12m if we cut him. Da da da dat’s all folks. Next year, nada. Sign anybody else and it COSTS MORE THIS YEAR AND NEXT. If he ain’t worth keeping, you wasted money.

          • BerwynBomber

Cutty can make 16M if he plays the whole season. Unless they give Glennon that, he’ll be cheaper.

And again, if you are looking for huge savings, go the Hoyer route. Glennon/Cutler is only a couple/few mil.

          • leftcoastdave

What, if Cutty hits incentives? Duh? Then he’s worth keeping! Again, cut him and we save $12m. $3m buried. Glennon gets only what? Do the math. Cutty is a one time one year only additional $15m soaking wet unless he plays great. I honestly do not know the incentive clauses. But I do know that there are no more ties after this year. Dat ain’t the case with anyone else you bring in.

          • BerwynBomber

“What, if Cutty hits incentives? Duh? Then he’s worth keeping!”

Cutler’s incentives are NOT performance-based. They are merely roster-based with a restructuring bonus. He could literally dress and carry a Surface all year and make the 16M.

Plus, Glennon will be (I’m guessing) significantly cheaper the second year. Cutty is up for 17m in ’18. I’d be shocked if the Bears give Glennon 33M guaranteed. Hell, I’d be shocked if anyone does.

          • leftcoastdave

How many times . . . Cutty can be cut with NADA after this year. No 17mill. Anything Glennon gets over $16 is a crap shoot.

Now, that said, I actually like the guy and hope the best for him. I just don’t think it makes sense to sign him in place of Cutty this year. If he is the best that is available, draft in the fourth round and see what develops with Shaw, your draft pick and possibly Barkley. But don’t take a flyer on someone who does not know the system and has no track record to suggest he will be any better than anyone already on the roster.

          • BerwynBomber

Yeah, I believe 52M of Cutty’s 54M guaranteed has been paid out. All that remains is 2M of restructured bonuses.

But if you’re are so hot and heavy about money and investing in the D, why not go Hoyer? He’ll be much more affordable than either Glennon or Cutty.

          • willbest

No its all paid out. The only thing that is left is 2 mil dead money from a restructured signing bonus to lower his cap hit in 2014

          • leftcoastdave

No, Hoyer will have to be paid as a starter. Check it out.

          • willbest

Correct, the floor on QB1 has been raised.

          • Irish Sweetness

Thid. How many games does a new QB in a new system cost you? 6 or 7 games last year decided by less than a score? A healthy Cutty gets you some of those. A Hoyer gives you none. A rook might shit the bed. Glennon could shit the bed.

          • willbest

Cutty is 12.5 +2.5 this year and 13.5 +2.5 next year. It’s a 16 mil cap hit this year (or 2 mil if he leaves the team) due to dead money.

Glennon is going to be more expensive than Jay Cutler if the rumors are even close to true simply by not being able to move on from him next year.

          • BerwynBomber

12.5 + 2.5 + 1 (restructured bonus) = 16M. He has a 1M restructured bonus for next year too. That is the 2M dead money — it is what remains of the 54M guaranteed.

Will Glennon rake in 16M this year? We’ll see. Or 17M next year? Again, we’ll see. But I doubt it.

          • leftcoastdave

What part of Cutty gets nuttin’ next year if he is gone will you not acknowledge?

          • BerwynBomber

Cutty has already been paid (excepting the 2M) So: he made 54M for being absolute shit in 2014, a decent game manager in 2015 and five games of crap in 2016.

But of course we can cut him now and only owe the 2M. That might be the plan. But who knows. Maybe he’s back.

          • willbest

So for whatever reason you seem to completely not understand Cutler’s contract.

You cannot both claim that Cutler was the highest paid player in 2014 and that he stands to make 16 million this year. If you want to believe Cutler makes 16 million this year then he made 18.5 million in 2014 and was thus the 3rd or 4th highest paid player in the league. Of course that didn’t happen.

Cutler was paid $22.5 million in 2014. That is what he reported to the IRS. However, the NFL allows bonuses to be prorated over the life of the contract. So as a fiction the NFL pretends that $1 million is paid in 2014-2018. This is to allow teams to spread the cap hit of giving player his money now over a period of years.

If Cutler plays all 16 games in 2017 he will report to the IRS $15 million (technically that isn’t true because there will be a January 2018 game). And that is how much Ted Philips is going to write on the checks if you add them all up.

That cap hit happens if you cut Cutler not because Cutler still gets a check from the Bears. It happens because the Bears still need to settle up with the cap in order to ensure they aren’t gaining an unfair advantage.

          • BerwynBomber

Wow, you mean I was off a whole 2M? Horrors!!!

          • willbest

You keep correcting people that say 15 million, with 16 million, so the difference must have been important enough to you.

          • BerwynBomber

Okay, then 22.5 highest paid QB in the league in ’14.
And 15 potentially for next year.
            Happy?

          • Irish Sweetness

Just numbers Will. Nothing to do with football. If anyone is more concerned with dollars and cents than winning a lombardi then they are not guilty of pissing all over George Halas’ grave, because he was a tight-arse himself. But it pisses on the jersey. Give my team the best QB you can give them. Don’t settle for a weak-chinned lank.

          • willbest

If Glennon get 14 million a year with 28 million guaranteed, are you really going to say that is more expensive than Cutler who gets 12.5 + 2.5 and 13.5 + 2.5 and no guarantees?

How do you not consider it worth a million dollars to be able to cut Cutler, while Glennon you are married to for 2 years?

          • BerwynBomber

We have to see what Glennon gets and even if he gets 28M guaranteed. But yes, Cutty made on average 18M a year on his deal. Even if Glennon gets 28, it will be 14M. That is less than 18M.

          • willbest

I have zero idea why you are comparing what Cutler made the last 3 years, to what each QB will cost this year and what burden they may place on 2018.

Thats called sunk cost. You aren’t getting it back. The business decision at hand is what provides you with the best value (cost, flexibility, etc) going forward.

          • BerwynBomber

Tough letting go of Cutty, huh? Oh well. We’ll see. I’m not convinced he’s gone. Just yet.

          • willbest

I don’t care if Cutler is QB1 or not. I care if Hoyer is under center but thankfully that doesn’t seem to be a worry.

There are plenty of reasons to choose Glennon over Cutler. Culture change, injury risk, fewer turnovers. But a money argument ends up in Cutler’s corner (if the reports on what Glennon is worth are true).

          • Irish Sweetness

This is all cock-knocking. Is Glennon better than Cutty? No. Cutty’s been starting in the NFL for what, 13 ..14 years? Start with that.A re we better with Glennon? Probably not. High percentage not.

          • Johnnywad

I was looking for the right word. But you’ve touched on it there. Cock-knocking. Exactly.

No sense squabbling over the contract just yet.

          • willbest

It matters because if you can turn a Bellamy into a sanu with the difference that might be better for your team. So its not just a BPA and give them what they want situation

          • Irish Sweetness

Why are we still looking to save, when we have all this space? Why scrimp on the most important position? What successful team does that?

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

No way the bears need to watch the capplication that closely this year or next.

          • MB30SD

            There it is… Logic.

          • leftcoastdave

Yep. Just like my ex used to say when she spent a couple hundred bucks because something was fifty bucks off. She actually believed that she saved money.

          • MB30SD

            OMG!!! It’s a sale!!!

            Babe… I totally saved money!!!

It’s about culture for me. We’re done with him, like the girl you already broke up with, but you have another 6 month on your lease. Uhhhgggh, what do you do? Spend the time/effort getting another place without a roommate.

You gotta come home to something that’s awkward and that you dread.

Not worth it yo. Just hook back up with your ex who’s easy but who’s a 5.5.

          • leftcoastdave

Sure. But are you buying the ex a new diamond ring? The culture signal was sent with AJ and might be doubled down on cutting a few more. But they will not cost more to replace than the one being cut. That is the simple point.

          • MB30SD

Sometimes the cost isn’t only fiscal my maings

          • Irish Sweetness

            Move a midget in.

          • MB30SD

            Hmmmm… I’ll consider it

          • Sahr Gborie

            For sure

          • Irish Sweetness

            Ted Philips.

        • Sahr Gborie

Give this man a round of applause

        • Irish Sweetness

I like Jay. I think he’s a good quarterback. For a long time he didn’t give a fuck. The teams around him and the blocking so poor, that he literally had to play with his pants on fire and two six-shooters strapped to his side. Down 2 TDs in the first quarter? Fuck it. BLAM! Oh Jay, why the fuck did you throw that!? DUDE! THROW IT AWAY! Next down, fuck me, move on! And then -and some attribute this to Gase, I don’t – he suddenly started ’15 playing with smarts. He threw the ball away a few times like we’d been screaming at him to do for years. The penny dropped. Finally. For whatever reason.

For 12.5M I don’t see a better option. Draft your guy at #3 then Ryan. Why not? Any of the top three are exciting. This is Cutty’s team though. He’s the man. None of those kids know how to outfox a top defense in the NFL. Their eyes will be wide as saucers when they get to training camp and see men compete. If they’re not shitting their pants they’re not human.

Cutty’s the only one that can drive this train where it’s going.

The Brian Hoyer illusion doesn’t win you games. Jordan Howard, draft another good one maybe in the 2nd or 3rd. Cash in. I’ll make no bones about it and think drafting leonard puts us over the top in that aspect of the game – with arguably the best interior in the league in front of them. Draft a tackle and this shit could get real. We could be the anomaly to success in the NFL – a power-running juggernaut, with a gunslinger on the play-action roll-out, backed with a stout defense (feeling Jamal is a possibility if they don’t draft a QB, draft Malik McDowell in the 2nd). That’s where Cutty could shine. The rollout after battering them with the run. Did anyone rate Jim McMahon the best at anything in his career? He was probably the best roll-out passer in the NFL according to the pros of the day. Always squared his shoulders. Cutty could fill that role. We could run all day with Jordan and Leonard. Never let up on those defenses, tire them out. Be relentless, and then the ends are chasing Cutty out to the sidelines but they just can’t get there … it would be sweet.

But if Cutty ain’t drivin it ……

          • MB30SD

            You’re delusional yos.

8 years of Jay cutler+ 2 more injuries and a year older. This shit doesn’t go backwards.

          • BerwynBomber

Cutler is an average QB. Not good. Average.

And he will make close to 15M. Not 12.5. Unless he never suits up the entire year.

      • Irish Sweetness

I think we were all on the Ship-Cutty boat in ’14. But then The Elway Effect … it’s a thing.

    • Sahr Gborie

We can have Cutty for 12 mil

      • willbest

Well you reasonably expect him to play 14 games or you cut him. So its more like 14.75 million

  • beninnorcal

Mike Glennon is okay, but I heard that his uncle Rico could throw a ball clear over them mountains over there.

Jurko made the comment that he has a beautiful wife on the radio today, and Carmen said “what NFL QB doesn’t” to which somebody responded “somebody who bagged groceries.” and somebody else said “Brenda Warner is a unique beauty. Thats what you are supposed to say right?”

    • Bender McLugh

      OUCH.

  • BerwynBomber

    Antoine Bethea (S) released.

    • Too old

      • BerwynBomber

Yeah, could be another Antrelle Rolle. Though big difference between Tucker and Fangio.

        • Pace is smart in targeting 27ish FAs.
Sometimes that means taking chances on players with limited playing time (Mcphee), but that can also pan out (Hicks).

I think the “oldest” FA he signed of any value was Sitton, and he almost had to since Grasu went down and Slauson was released.

Plus, Pace knows we’re a few years away from true contention, so he’s trying to grow them together.

          • SC Dave

Hicks turned out to be an excellent acquisition. Hopefully, he’s got another 5 or 6 years at last season’s level.

          • McPhee was value too, just inj which is always my concern w part timers becoming full timers

    • Irish Sweetness

      Read it. Ignored it. Gone.

  • Irish Sweetness

    How many Glennon polls now?

And not ONE asking the great unwashed about our CURRENT starting QB. Unbelievable.

When Pace rolls out Cutty/ Shaw as his 1-2 for 2017 … and the possibility was not entertained by ANY writer …. I will shake my head so vigorously, the dandy will fall like snow at yuletide.

    • SC Dave

It’s about the culture, not money. It’s not complex.

I would love to see Shaw become something, because it would be easy and we hopefully had not wasted a high pick on a QB this year while we find out. Connor’s numbers at USC (yeah, the minor leagues, but most would argue the SEC is at least equivalent to AA baseball)

      • leftcoastdave

3.5:1. That would be a lovely stat to maintain.

  • Jim Wenhart

The Bears are not a playoff team in 2017. Draft a QB and start him right now. Sure, it will be another painful year but the Bears may be relevant in 2018. Glennon is not the answer and the money slotted for him can go towards the many holes within the Bears roster.

  • T.dyon

One thing for certain, no matter who they sign or don’t sign in FA for QB They will not select a QB at 1. 3, because Pace goes with BPA.

    • DaMurph

No he doesn’t, that’s why we have Kevin White spending his career on IR!

      • Sauron’s right eyeball

Bingo! Still scratching my head on that pick.

      • T.dyon

Lol yeah, BPA before and after hindsight tend to be different.

      • T.dyon

Yeah true… what looks like BPA before Draft doesn’t always project after.

  • Sauron’s right eyeball

When can we expect to see players actually start signing deals?

    • BearDown100393

      Tomorrow.

  • Bender McLugh

If he gets signed point #6 is all that matters. Well, that and the fact that most of us fans already hate the guy.

    • Bender McLugh

“I don’t hate him, but I sure do feel better when he’s not around.”

    • SC Dave

      Typical Bears fans.

  • Tough to disagree here. That kind of money means he’s your guy, which makes investing a high pick in a QB a lot tougher.

You’re staking your career on the fact that Mike Glennon is better than any QB in this draft will be. That’s one hell of a gamble.

    • BerwynBomber

My bet is he will be the lowest-paid starter in the league not on a rookie contract. If, indeed, the Bears do sign him.

And I still think they will draft a QB too — this year or next.

  • BearDown100393

    Jay Cutler > Mike Glennon

When Jay plays, people complain. When Jay does not play, people complain.
Just wait until they get a load of Giraffeboy.

    • BerwynBomber

Plenty people already hate Glennon. In fact, he seems much more reviled than Cutty ever was.

      • Johnnywad

Which is funny. Because he’s a complete unknown in Chicago. The optics are bad though. That guy just doesn’t look like an NFL caliber athlete.

        • Johnnywad

And yet the city loved Kyle Orton, who’s hobbies were not throwing for very many yards or touchdowns, being boring, having bad facial hair, driving a Prius, and drinking Bourbon.

          • SC Dave

            It was the bourbon, obviously.

          • BearDown100393

He was Neckbeard. But he was our Neckbeard.

        • BerwynBomber

Yeah, Glennon’s hardly out of central casting for a QB. Plus, he has dumbass face and isn’t the most fleet of foot. And some pro-Cutler backlash informs some of it.

          • Johnnywad

LOL. We jump from jerk face to dumb ass face.

          • BerwynBomber

Hey, it’s Chicago QBing at its finest.

          • MB30SD

chicken head is more accurate in my esteemed estimation.

        • SC Dave

Yet so utterly typical of far too many Bears fans.

  • Johnnywad

Yes. He should have been able to gaze into his crystal ball and know that a player with a pretty clean injury history was about to micro fracture the fuck out of his lower leg.

And then the next season be tackled awkwardly, get his leg tangled up and break it.

    And thereby avoid the pick.

And while we’re at it, we should totally launch Kyle Long. He got hurt this year. And fuck that. I want lineman that don’t get hurt. Or at least have the decency to play through their injuries like real men.

    • leftcoastdave

The trainers should have been able to tape that ankle up and send him back in.

    • MB30SD

      jes

    • Sauron’s right eyeball

Misplaced sarcasm. Only a facking bozo drafts a WR in the 1st with the holes this team had that year. Smh

      • One of those holes is WR! Unless u wanna give Alshon Juilo $ or are fine w Meredith

        • Sauron’s right eyeball

I hated the pick. Didn’t look like a good football decision at the time, it still doesn’t.

  • Thompson Way

In the end, the Media hates Cutler, and at the moment is neutral towards Glennon. So, small win for the Bears front office….

    • willbest

Considering the media gets more out of driving a driving narratives than winning this would be a losers mindset

      • MB30SD

        it’s the thompson way.

        • Johnnywad

          Hahaha. Relentless.

          • MB30SD

It’s all I can think about when I read his screensnames

  • Huge Bears Penis

    BMarsh signed with Giants.

    • BearDown100393

Well that should certainly help Odell calm down….

  • Malice Halice

If we take Glennon I want L.Fournette with our pick. Then snatch up t.smith in FA. Draft defensive n expect another top 5 pick for the 2018 draft.

    • MB30SD

Oh Jesus Chris… Here we go

      • Malice Halice

If we get Glennon were fucked period. Ain’t no way around it. Bringing in Glennon n losing AJ brings our O back to square 1 while our secondary is still in shambles. I cannot fathom any reason to bring that guy here. If we do, might as well save the trouble and draft Fournette so he and Jordan can kill da clock to minimize the fuckin blowouts we finna indure.

        • MB30SD

I agree 100% maings, so why say fuck it and make another move that makes just as little sense.

We have no idea what Glennon can do for us, IF it happens at least we can stop thinking about the QB position… And focus everything else on D

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

At least you left 10% for chance, I like to see that. He he

    • Captain Obvious

So this is a joke, right? When we’ve got Howard at RB already, and some decent depth behind him. Why would we waste our round 1 pick on a team strength when we have a secondary to rebuild?

Jesus, at least when you tell a joke, have a better punchline.

      • Irish Sweetness

We have no depth behind Jordan. Jordan is human and can get injured. What then? Besides, Howard isn’t great at catching the ball and he runs out of steam when he hits the secondary. If they sign Glennon, he’s the perfect pick.

Fournette is a freak. You’re not ‘wasting’ a pick drafting the next Herschel Walker.

  • 505Bears

Glennon just looks like a damn asshat…if he gets signed, he’ll be holding a clipboard by mid season

  • BearDown100393

Brandon Marshall’s avatar is the Lombardi Trophy, something he has never come close to winning. He also photographed his contract with the Giants even though announcements cannot be made until tomorrow after 4 PM. I guess rules are not really rules.

    • He was cut. I believe the rules are different for players who were cut. They don’t have to wait until the new league year starts (tomorrow at 4) to sign with a team.

      • BearDown100393

        Thanks

    • BerwynBomber

Beware of that second year of BMarsh NYG.

      • MB30SD

Bmarsh and obj… That’s a fuuuckton of talent… And of crazy.

        • BerwynBomber

Don’t forget Sterling Shepard either, who looked pretty damn good as a rook.

Actually thought NYG was better than GB last year, just that NYG didn’t capitalize early in that WC game and then Rodgers began playing out of his mind. NYG’s D was pretty damn good last year.

        • Irish Sweetness

And Sterling! Cruz is a FA, yo, let’s get him.

          • MB30SD

He’s got one legs G$. HeDone.

      • MB30SD

we were sick 10 times last year and about 5 so far this year. Brutal.

Dooooood!!! does your wife cook amazing lebanese food? One of my favorite cuisines of all.

        • Captain Obvious

Yep. She doesn’t cook it often, mainly on weekends because it takes a shitload of prep (stuff has to soak, we’re always running out of some obscure ingredient that you can only find at a Middle Eastern grocer, etc.), but I eat very well.

And before we had the kids, sometimes she’d cook with just an apron on. And then I’d eat VERY well.

          • MB30SD

hahahaha… lebanese food is fucking bomb dude. There’s a joint by my work and my god that food is so damn good.

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

Them belly dancers ain’t so bad either.

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

I love the lebonese. Great people.

        • Captain Obvious

When head lice made the rounds at my kids’ school, my wife refused to go near our kids. I had nit-picking duty. My kids never caught the bugs, but we pre-emptively nuked them with the bug-killing shampoo, etc.

Lice treatment where my wife grew up is to shave heads. My wife’s hair goes almost down to her ass, and she was so paranoid about losing it to the bugs.

At least with all the snot and flu and stomach viruses the kids bring home, they go away somewhat quickly and then you’re immune to being re-infected. Lice ain’t like that. They stick around, and even once you get rid of them, one wrong move and you got the critters again.

    • Sauron’s right eyeball

Did you get a flew shot?

      • MB30SD

        flew indeed.

those things are fucking useless. If you ask irish they’re probably the thing they put into bond in Spectre.

        • Sauron’s right eyeball

Now I’ll never get an answer from him. Thanks a lot.

Was gonna unload that on him if he said yes. Lol

          • MB30SD

hahahaha… I have first hand empirical evidence.

All of my family got it last year and we were all sick 10 times… flu at least once each, if not twice.

It’s a fucking racket. The strain they get every year is like a year behind, so it’s useless. The new bug has already mutated and is immune. Garbage.

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

Yup, I did that 15 years ago.

          • Haven’t had flew shots in a decade plus. I get sick less than others for simple fact i dont hang around snotty children

          • Huge Bears Penis

fair warning – watch out for hanging around/hooking up with single moms. that’s how i usually get sick.

          • MB30SD

that’s not totally true is it.

            broken pissy children maybe?

          • Irish Sweetness

            Ayuh.

  • Zap Rowsdower (GP)

Revis says he won’t even entertain offers that are less than $8M for 1 year.

    • MB30SD

      agree. hedone…ish

    • BearDown100393

  • MB30SD
    • Irish Sweetness

He won the bitch-slapping contest too …

    • Been saying all along, Mixon is AS good as Fournette or Cook.

If we can draft Mixon in the 4rth that would be the deadliest duo in the NFL.

      He complements Howard perfectly.

      • MB30SD

And he can send off fat chicks?

  • MB30SD

GP, you should see the newest player on my roster. double sleeve, finger tats, 9.5 bod, 8 face. cray cray, but interesting (for now)

  • willbest

Biggs is reporting that other NFL teams are acting as if negotiations with Glennon and the Bears are all but a formality.

    • willbest

shit. Wagner to the Lions. Could have used a RT upgrade.

      • MB30SD

        sigh

    • Sauron’s right eyeball

      This is good news.

  • Captain Obvious

MB, you see this guy? 6’4″ 224lb FS

    http://www.nfl.com/draft/2017/profiles/obi-melifonwu?id=2558189

Could be the latest 4th-round steal 😉

    • Bender McLugh

he’s listed as 4th best by Walter Football. That would a nice pickup in the 4th round

      • MB30SD

        Adams
        Hooker
        Budda
        Him?

    • MB30SD
      • Captain Obvious

        Some of his highlights

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EoLixnW-KiY

Definitely not a thumper, despite his size. Downhill tackler. Coverage skills look decent for a S his size. You can definitely tell he’s fast. He’s got a faster top gear than most other guys on the field.

I dunno. I think FS should get “solved” this draft. Any of the top 3 guys will be there by the time our 2nd round pick comes around, and any of them should be high quality additions.

        • MB30SD

          agree

        • MB30SD

yeah, I saw what you saw. Sure tackler, but not near the thunder that Adams brings on almost erra play. He’s fast as shit so that’s good.

If we go adams in 1, I’d love to have this guy for our 3rd.

    • SC Dave

      Saw that earlier today.

    • Captain Obvious

Oh, and he’d neutralize most TEs in the league. His coverage skills look up to it, and he has the size and more speed than any TE I can think of.

Not that I’d prefer him to Hooker or Adams, but if neither of those guys is available (say, if Garrett doesn’t get picked at 1 or 2 and we sprint up to the podium to get him) when we’re picking in the 2nd, he might not be a bad 3rd-round choice. Though I’m partial to Adams, who looks like a bigger, less fragile Mike Brown.

      • MB30SD

I’m going to be 100% fine with Hooker OR Adams. I’d prefer Hooker still, but would be fine with adams who looks like an absolute beast… but then we should go baker in the second… or this kid.

  • BearDown100393

I miss the golden days complaining about Ray McDonald.

    • Captain Obvious

Just complain about Ronald McDonald and golden showers, instead.

  • Zap Rowsdower (GP)

    Tyrod Taylor resigned by Bills

    • Bender McLugh

figured it would happen, would have loved to see him signed instead of Glennon

  • Waffle

If Glennon arrives I depart. That is a promise. What an ill advised move that would be. The ONLY way I’d even consider watching the Bears this year with Glennon at QB is if they pulled a fucking coup and went all in on D in the draft at DB and DL and then picked up the likes of Stephon Gilmore and Jefferson in FA.
Glennon plus the putrid combo of Amos, LeBanks, Bausby, need I fucking go on……would be the death knell.

    • Sauron’s right eyeball

That suckys yonny. If you and MB check out, who’ll be around to shake their head at my jokes?

      • Brike Glennonsweiler

Brike will be here just meandering around the party looking all fucking awkward while nervously butting in on conversations with too many ughs and umms.

        • Sauron’s right eyeball

          Mordor scum.

    • BerwynBomber

      Brike! LOL … nice work.

    • MB30SD

exactly. things are getting weird maings.

They better fucking go balls deep on some serious DBs for me to stay even remotely interested. But that has never changed.

      • Sauron’s right eyeball

Don’t let his Cutty love infect you MB.

        • MB30SD

          please

        • Brike Glennonsweiler

I love being competitive. The bears are competitive with an NFL caliber D, decent specials, a run game and a QB that can throw TD’s.
We need all of them now except the run game.

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

I get it my man. Just messing with MB. I can’t wait to hear your concession speech when the blog awards you an honorary 10 year cutty sobriety pin. It’s gonna be fun getting there. Hee hee

          • MB30SD

admitting you have a problem is the first step trac.

          • Irish Sweetness

Howard gets injured, who’s your back? You like those OTs? We’re a back and two tackles short of a proper run game.

Pace’s options were cutler, romo, glennon, Hoyer, draft or give up draft picks

It’s an ugly world out there in QB hell

          • MB30SD

Which is why I wanted to roll with the guys we knew and had last year. Cheap, easy, known. Fix errathing else and go big on D.

Oh well. I’m still hoping pace goes fucking postal on D in Fa and the draft. I still might watch then.

And look, you’re still aliiiiive! Congrats.

          • BearDown100393

    • SC Dave

      Shaw is da new Destroyah!

      • Huge Bears Penis

        what about Barkley?

        • BerwynBomber

Valid point. Yikes. Maybe Glennon, Shaw and Barkley.

          • Zap Rowsdower (GP)

I think that’s it, and they spend the 3rd on Adams or Allen.

I really really really thought they would take Trubisky. But I can’t see taking him and then putting him behind Glennon, even on a 1 year deal.

I might be wrong though and Westworld spends big on QB.

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

I guess they knew SF was taking him. Good intel vs fake news wins evra time.

          • Never know.

Maybe Pace thinks Trubisky doesn’t get past #2, so he’s not gonna reach for Kizer, Watson, Mahomes at #3.

  • BerwynBomber

    DAL to release Romo Thursday.

  • Zap Rowsdower (GP)

I wonder how much John Fox got to veto the Rookie QB idea.

Fangio and Fox were probably all about Allen or Hooker or Adams and wanted no part of grooming a kid they were unlikely to be here when he matured.

Now is the time for a GM, in his 3rd year, to make the Rookie QB splash. If we sign Glennon I can’t see that happening – which is surprising.

    • Sauron’s right eyeball

You Sir, made a bet. Don’t go all wobbly on me now.

      • Zap Rowsdower (GP)

I did. I assumed Westworld would follow the GM playbook. At best Trubisky and at worst, Watson.

It looks like he’s not following that playbook.

Bears are giving Glennon up to $12M for one year. For a guy who hasn’t thrown a pass since 2014.

        • Sauron’s right eyeball

          I’m thinking 2nd or 3rd round for a QB.

    • MB30SD

next year with a MUCH lower % of risk. I wouldn’t bet my job and career on a QB @ #3 this year if my life depended on it.

    • Irish Sweetness

Isn’t it the first yer you do that? (if) When the rook develops, the management are gone …

    • True, but WHICH rookie QB?

Teams that felt they needed a QB when the draft class was subpar often regretted it (Ponder, Geno, Gabbert…)

  • Ron Swanson’s Mustache

Why make a splash for a QB at #3 just to make a splash if your evaluations say the player is not worth the pick?

    Makes no sense.

    • Sauron’s right eyeball

Eye agree. Look for them to draft one in the 2nd or 3rd maybe.

        • chitownproud85

          • MB30SD

            dude, it’s more like:

            Game 1: 414 yards, 3 TDs, 2 INTs 1 Win
            Game 2: 185 yards, 2 TDs, 4 INTs, 2 strip-sacks, 0 Wins
            Game 3: 258 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT, 1 strip-sack, 0 Wins
            Game 4: 213 yards, 2 TDs, 2 INTs, 0 strip-sack (!!!), 0 Wins

why could we not give that to hoyer instead of 15 mil a year to the giraffe?

        • BerwynBomber

Yeah, I posed this last night but a couple of resident DBB contract specialists/Cutty lovers told “oh, hell no. Hoyer would get Glennon even Cutty money to start!”

Early reports are Hoyer will get 6M per year with the opportunity to start.

  • chitownproud85

Sooo..does Glennon come with 1 year or 2? If its only 1, IF its ONLY 1, I guess I get it. Its basically taking a flier on a guy that at least has some possible potential upside, and you probably wouldnt be starting a QB draft pick on day one anyway…so its kind of like swinging twice at once in search of our next quarterback.

Someone has to stop this. Rationalizing this is BULLSHIT

    • willbest

It will be no less than 1.5

      • chitownproud85

I assume there is no way he is signing anywhere for less than 2, chance to start be damned. So if he does come to Chi-town, it looks like he’d be a guy for 2 years, even if hes never THE guy.

    • BearDown100393
    • BearDown100393

Glennon will ask for 3 years and Pace will give him 8.

      • chitownproud85

Three is definitely too much unless they are only paying him 6 a year or something lol. Its either short and sweet and a bridge contract, or they sign him for money they can live with paying a potential backup. If he gets 3 at that 12-16mil, my gasket blows.

        • BearDown100393

Glennon was offered $8 million just to back up crab legs. The Bears will pony up dollars and years just to balance out that lovely IL tax bill also.

they can give a 20 year contract for all I care, it does not matter. the only thing that matters is GUARANTEED MONEY. They will most likely give him somewhere between 1 and 2 years of guaranteed money.

          • BerwynBomber

The only thing that matters is guaranteed money EXCEPT when discussing Jay Cutler’s contract. Or so goes the lesson I learned the last three years.

    Here’s the Capt’n’s booooyyyyeeeee!

    http://www.si.com/nfl/2017/03/08/combine-draft-scouting-reports-rumors-deshaun-watson

Obi Melifonwu, S, UConn: The huge safety (6′ 4″, 224 pounds) continued a very impressive off-season. “Basically from the start of the bowl season through the combine, really finished strong,” said one scout. He ran a 4.40 in the 40, and was great in the vertical and broad jumps. “I think he moves well enough and showed enough range, he showed that he could be an interchangeable safety,” said another scout. “Maybe a nickel linebacker, but I think his home position would be a safety.”

    • SC Dave

I like the idea of a safety only giving up 2″ to the big receivers.

      • MB30SD

and he’s fast. Good tackler although he doesn’t bring the wood.

I would be VERY happy with a Adams/Meli one-two punch

        • SC Dave

I watched the highlight reel, and whoever posted it said he was not a big hitter. Don’t care. What really matters is stopping the forward progress of the ball, and (at least so far as a highlight reel tells one) this guy does exactly that.

          • MB30SD

yes, hence ‘sure tackler, but not a wood guy’.

Adams is both and he jumps off the screen

    • Keep hope alive

According to NFL Network’s Mike Silver, it is “more likely than not” Redskins franchise player Kirk Cousins ends up as the 49ers’ quarterback.
Silver did allow that this marriage might not happen until 2018, but stated he believes Cousins “wants to be in San Francisco,” and the potential marriage “wants to happen on both ends.” The 49ers’ current supporting cast would be a significant obstacle for Cousins’ outlook in the Bay Area, but he is coveted by new coach Kyle Shanahan, and the Niners are presently armed with ten draft picks, including No. 2 overall. The Redskins also look likely to lose DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon in free agency, essentially dismantling an offense that last year finished No. 3 in yards per game and No. 12 in points. They are also expected to part ways with talented GM Scot McCloughan.-roto

      • Not in love, but for a bridge, why not?

If Darnold came out this yr, I’d be all-on on him, but wouldn’t matter cuz then the Browns would draft him.

If Tyrod was free, I’d be ok with him.

But Glennon? He’s proved NOTHING on the Bears.

        He’s another Barkley.

A project we’re all crossing our fingers will succeed.

Except he’s about $15M more expensive.

        • willbest

I don’t understand why you weight the 4.5 games as a Bear so much higher than the other 27 starts. Glennon is basically a neckier version of Hoyer with substantially better arm strength. If you believe Loggains is legit, this is in every way an upgrade from Hoyer.

        • Johnnywad

Barkley and Glennon are absolutely nothing alike. Barkley has 8 TDs and 14 INTs for starters. Glennon is 30 and 15. Barkley is a 60 PR. Glennon is an 84. Barkley is 6’2″. Glennon is 6’6″.

Glennon may prove to be terrible. But he and Barkley are nothing alike.

          • leftcoastdave

And Barkley was given what to prepare?

            Yea, nada.

He was thrown in and always behind in the score, expecting to throw to dudes he had only met with a handshake.

Please. Do not presume that this was a fair test of Barkley’s abilities.

I hope he gets one somewhere.

          • Johnnywad

Huh? He started six games last year. I would “presume” during that, more than a third of an NFL season while he was getting 50% more starts than Hoyer and the same number as Cutler, that he was being given every opportunity to “prepare”. I would “presume” he was given all of the first team reps for six weeks.
And while he did that, I KNOW he got worse with each passing week because he sucks at football and the rest of the league had game film on him with which to exploit his massive football suckness.

            You his dad leftcoastdave?

          • Irish Sweetness

Maybe looking after the ball is what will make Glennon useful.

I still can’t believe we’re mentioning his name.

    • Irish Sweetness

Is Hoyer capable of holding the all-time NFL passing record for receptions to one receiver in a game?

Well fellas I had my other knee replaced Monday. No funny OR stories this time. The Anestithist took me out immediately and I when I woke up I was in the recovery room. Because of gassing the living shit out me I ended up throwing up 5 times that night. Ugh. Super sore. It was really sore in the back of the knee and the surgeon explained that my foot was 18 degrees from center and to get in there and grind he had to lever my tendons and ligaments in the back of my knee out of the way. Lots better today. They even let me out a day early (probably by popular demand). Good to be home and have this over with. About 8 weeks of healing and rehab and I should be able to hike again. YAY!

Major bummer, dude. From what I hear, knees are a bitch, the worst.

Avoid the Kyle long “recovery issues” and listen to Sweetness. There’s a reason people like Jimmy Mac advocate “going green” for pain relief. It don’t kill your liver and is not addictive.

      • CanadaBear

Knees are a bitch. But not being able to walk more than a few blocks is a bigger issue. Not to mention after standing for about 5 minutes I was looking for anywhere to sit down.

    • MB30SD

Glad you’re out safely my maings. Heal well

Thanks Ben. Now it’s all about rehab and pain mgmt.

    • Knee replacement.

      Still preferable to Glennon.

      • leftcoastdave

        Ouch!!!

  • Johnnywad

    Ok. Hypothetically.
What if Glennon is good? Or markedly better than Hoyer?

    • BearDown100393

What if Kevin White’s bones were not made of paper mache?

      • Johnnywad

Then he’d be fast. So he’s got that going for him.

    • Sauron’s right eyeball

It’s the best decision that Pace could have made under the circumstances on me-eye opinion.

      • Irish Sweetness

I don’t know Trac. If they think Jimmy G could be had for our #3 …. why bother with Glennon?

        • willbest

You are willing to give up #3 for G? That seems insane to me. The guy played 1.75 games and was then injured. He preformed great in those 1.75 games but nobody had seen him play after 2 years under the greatest coach ever.

          • Huge Bears Penis

Bears have a little better insight on Jimmy than a lot of teams. They got to seem him in practice, during the joint practice sessions last year. Maybe the coaches saw something they liked or did not like.

          • Irish Sweetness

Not saying I like him – I want Cutty at QB – but rather than pay Glennon ….

          • willbest

Glennon is just money. Jimmy G costs you Thomas

          • Irish Sweetness

Jimmy G costs you Fournette. Yes. Don’t want Jimmy G. We got a QB. His backup is signed. I don’t see any issues.

          • willbest

In no universe are we drafting Fournette.

          • Irish Sweetness

Cast yourself three years into the future. Look back at teh 2017 draft. Maybe three names will jump off the first round.

Probably Myles Garret. Definitely Fournette ..and after that I don’t know. Now if that’s the case, why wouldn’t you draft a ‘special one’. They’re not talking about him like he’s the best of the draft … but the best of many drafts.

He will be the BPA at #3. IF Pace truly drafts BPA ….

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

All of the above. No matter who the Bears draft, at least they’re not stupid enough to risk their future on a risky trade heavily in favor of the Patriots. .

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

This! Give teams a few weeks of film to game plan with him as a Bear and all of a sudden all of Chicagoland is wishing they’d spent the pick on a stud and signed Glennon.

          • Irish Sweetness

            Nope. I said ‘they’.

            Cutty is my QB.

        • Pat’s wanted TWO #1s.
          This year’s and next.

If I’m giving up two 1s, it’s for Darnold.

          • Irish Sweetness

I think Bellifat has his next QB and he’s just trying to steal from somebody then.

        • Sauron’s right eyeball

See below Irish. This move feels right. I had a caution in my gut about Garoppolo. Not as bad as when we traded for Cutty but it didn’t seem like a good football decision to me.

        • Malice Halice

Glennon ain’t even ranked top 35 in FA! That’s who pace is reaching for

    • BerwynBomber

Sounds good to me. Not like the Bears QB play has been all that the last few years anyway.

    • Irish Sweetness

At least Glennon can make professional throws, that’s as much as I can go to bat for him.

      • Did he even hit 60% completion?

        That’s Tebus/Orton accuracy.

        Hmhmm goood.

        • Irish Sweetness

But Hoyer was completing passes behind the line of scrimmage – or close to – I could throw those. Me. Now. I turn 45 next week.

  • BearDown100393

    Important Glennon Comparison Chart: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Bzc45rHIIAEKjCr.png

  • BerwynBomber

Hoge’s piece on Glennon is thorough and measured. Worth the read.

    • Irish Sweetness

” His athletic limitations means he must play behind a top-end offensive line with a strong, complementary running game.”

Well, we can give him three-fifths of that line. I just can’t believe this is happening for real. Cutty must be hurt, or they know something is up.

      • BerwynBomber

Or they have looked at the first 11 years of his career and decided they had seen enough.

        • MB30SD

          Bingo.

People are fucking tape blind. We know who he is and he has zero hidden or potential upside.

          He is Jay cutler. Period

          • Huge Bears Penis

tape blind, coming from the guy that wanted to keep Hoyer.

          • MB30SD

            yes… or shaw… or barkely.

Save money, don’t focus on some other possibility that’s an unknown both ways… while guys like jefferson and walker get signed by other teams.

Eye on the fucking ball. What do you think the delta between glennon and hoyer/barkley/shaw will be? Enough to necessitate all this trouble/focus?

          • Huge Bears Penis

we have money to sign any big name FA available even if we pay Glennon. Pace and company either had different plans or they chose other places. Also why not try someone with unknowns? We know exactly what we had with hoyer, shaw, and barfly, they sucked. Who cares if we swing and miss. At least we are swinging.

          • MB30SD

It was more the focus. One of the best OL gone and two of the Fa safeties already while we work feverishly to make our first huge FA splash with…. Mike glennon.

            Hmmmm…

Devil that you know. There’s a reason there’s a saying for it.

Oh, and swinging for a pitch that’s slipped out of the pitcher’s hand and is 10′ high and 10 outside isn’t a good look

          • Huge Bears Penis

no winning this type of argument.

We made an offer to Wagner- it wasn’t enough. If we did get him people would complain we paid too much. Jefferson went to Baltimore despite getting a higher offer from the Browns, even if we threw a lot of money at him there is no saying he would sign with us. That’s the thing with FA they can sign with whoever they want, and avoid the teams they don’t. And if Pace put his sole focused on one player in FA then Pace should be fired. I honestly don’t believe that is true, and can’t seriously believe you think that.

          • MB30SD

I just don’t know maings… And neither do you. Both the scenarios each of us laid out is just as much fantasy as the other right.

            We’ll never know.

          • Huge Bears Penis

TBH, that is why i hate this time of year. no one knows for certain what is going on behind the scenes except the GM and the agents. Fans are too emotional, and try to find reasons why we did not sign this FA or that one or bitch about how much a FA signed for. When no fan knows the plans the GM has. We can only speculate, and it sucks more since we are such a shitty team.

Right now Pace has not given me any reason not to trust him. Our QB situation is crap so i am ok with Pace taking a chance on an unknown with higher potential than what we have. As far as the other positions i have faith Pace has a plan. Another thing as far as the D goes, Fangio’s D does not rely on all world safeties, his front 7 makes them look good. Those safeties on his 49ers D were crap once that front 7 fell apart and Fangio left.

          • MB30SD

            yep.

reid is good. I like that kid.

          • Irish Sweetness

Here’s what I feel – PAce has no more intention of signing Glennon than I do. ‘Media muppets’ like La Canfora are now extending rumors in some strange idea that it will manifest itself, and make them look .. .what?

          • Irish Sweetness

I contend it was the Niners players and not Fangio who were good.

Can you make an argument for not needing good safteies?

          • Huge Bears Penis

Whitner left – he sucked. Front 7 started to fall apart Reid’s numbers dropped. I am not saying we don’t need good safeties, I am saying Fangio relies on his front 7 to be great not his safeties. Ever wonder why we really did not focus on the DBs the last couple years in FA? Fangio ideology puts the importance on the front 7.

          • Irish Sweetness

“We made an offer to Wagner- it wasn’t enough”

Exactly. We failed. There was a RT there we really needed. And we failed to get him. Cap space yada yada yada – fucking useless until you use it.

          • Huge Bears Penis

I am assuming Pace has a price level he is willing to pay for each position, the price went to high. Why pay a RT $10M when he has never even made a PB? We have massie who is at least serviceable

          • BerwynBomber

True. And we also knew exactly what we had in Cutler.

          • Irish Sweetness

Ranging from shit to bad …..? Actually no, Shaw might be good.

          • MB30SD

            Hahahaha… you never disappoint.

He might also be Shaw 2.0. we’re the bears, Which do you think is more likely

          • Irish Sweetness

Upside? Cutler? He’s on of the most special QBs in the NFL on his day.

            Hoyer OTOH …is useless. Always.

          • MB30SD

You are 100% delusional my man. Like, certifiable. But I still love you.

The only special about cutler is his cannon arm. That’s literally it. The rest is of the short-bus variety

        • Noooooo.
          Can’t be!

Irish believes Tall Whites partied in the Belagio with hookers from Alpha Centuri, and Will thinks the CIA posed as the KGB to elect then later tear down Trumpf

          but Cutler sucking?

          Inconceivable!

      • willbest

Cutler is still not medically cleared to play.

        • Irish Sweetness

This must be it. I think he’s worse than they’re letting on. Only thing that makes sense.

          • CanadaBear

Why do you hang onto this Cutty dream. The guy sucks moose wang.

      • Malice Halice

As long as we get a probowl DB/ S and WR in FA then go apeshit on D in the draft. I might be optimistic

        • Huge Bears Penis

can’t go apeshit on D in the draft, we have to draft a punter and kicker in the 3rd and 4th rounds.

      • Yeah, something’s up alright.

        Cargo TOs.

But the good news is, he’s fragile.

    • leftcoastdave

Agree. If it is fait acompli, I’m behind him 100% and hope for the best. Just hope Barkley gets a shot, if not here, somewhere else.

      • Barkley no. Shaw and in draft QB Peterson, yes.

        • leftcoastdave

Agree. Was thinking Barkley elsewhere. I think that they both can compete for starting jobs, or at least should get the chance. Barkley was thrown into a baptism of fire without any time with his WRs and always behind the 8ball by way of the scores given up by the lack of a secondary. I still believe keeping Cutty, Barkley and Shaw with Peterman in the fourth was the answer. But it depends on the question. (???) Clearly, that was not (imho) what made the most sense.

  • BuddhaJoe

So ditch Cutty for fucking Giraffe Boy? That’s insanity. If they need a bridge guy, sign Romo and pray he doesn’t fall apart. At least you know he can fucking play. I might have to sit the year out, can’t ditch ’em but I don’t know how much my liver can handle.

  • beninnorcal

Everyone crying about Hoyer potentially walking needs to relax. Sure, he had some efficient games as a Texan and a Bear. Just not much excitement in his game.
Also, the tape from his last game as a Texan will continue to haunt him. Good riddance.

    • Irish Sweetness

Yeah, folks should focus on his playoff meltdown, and not the game he won for us.

      • MB30SD

        Ridiculous statement. Smh

As opposed to the playoff game cutler won? How about the game he won for us.

Ravens signing Tony Jefferson (rumor has it he left money on the table to not be a Brown).

  • BerwynBomber

“DaBearsBlog @dabearsblog For me, Glennon starting in 2017 is fine. But if Bears believe Glennon is a longer term answer at position I think they’re nuts.”

Now you’re coming around. See what a difference 24 hours makes?

Pace will draft someone this year or next (or they are sold on Shaw as the future, which I doubt). My bet is Glennon gets a frontloaded two year deal. Roughly $20M guaranteed.

The only potential regret is we might have been able to execute the same bridge move with Hoyer for a lot less dough. (He is rumored to be signing with SF for 6M per season/2 years/12M guaranteed with the opportunity to start.)

Cutler could end up in the post-season if he lands with HOU. But then again, every QB that starts for HOU gets in the post-season — Oz, Shaub, TJ Yates, etc.

Looks like we will have an entirely new QB room in ’17. Should be interesting.

    • That’s my major gripe.
Said all along that Hoyer would probably get $5M/yr in a system he’s already a known quantity.

What Pace has basically decided is to pay more for the POSSIBILITY of Glennon becoming a franchise QB.

He’s essentially gambling on his ceiling assuming his floor is Hoyer.

If Glennon is a Bear, then I think Pace has a VERY strong later rd QB target in this draft, or has an unwavering belief that next year’s draft class is superior (or both. Could draft a guy like Peterman this yr, and go all-in on a QB next draft if Glennon flames out).

      • BerwynBomber

They could also draft a QB with this year’s second round pick. Wouldn’t shock me.

        • Yes, I prolly shoulda said “out or 1st rd QB”.

IMO, Peterman is a 3rd, but if they really believe in him…

Or maybe Pace knows that one of the QBs will fall (Kizer, Trubisky, Mahomes, Watson, Kaaya) to 2nd, though I’m skeptical about that scenario.

Lot of teams like Cards, Gmen, Texans, Saints I’m sure wouldn’t mind a long term project.

          • Irish Sweetness

I will cover my bollix in nettles and acid if Mahomes or Kayaa are drafted in round 1.

          • They might be. The Texans can take a flier on one, or a team like the 9ers could trade back into the first.

      • Huge Bears Penis

Hoyer sucks. In the last 4 years he has either missed significant games to injury, Broken arm this year, concussions last year, ACL a couple years back, or he has been benched for the likes of Mallet, Manziel, and Weedon.

        • And yet Cutler was benched for Hoyer.

Is Glennon gonna “suck” less than Hoyer while costing like $7M/yr more?

          • Huge Bears Penis

Don’t really care. Pace is taking a chance that is fine by me. He has not done anything for me not to trust him.

          • Irish Sweetness

Not yet. When he signs Glennon and dumps our best QB to one of our most bitter rivals ….

          • Huge Bears Penis

we suck we have no rivals. unless you count the browns and 49ers who rival us in our level of suckitude.

          • Irish Sweetness

I can see Cutty in Minnesota …

          • CanadaBear

Then the beloved would be the recipient of TO’s twice a year.

          • Irish Sweetness

Because he was injured. If Cutty was straight-up benched for Hoyer he would have left Chicago the same day.

      • Irish Sweetness

Would he draft a QB if he signed Glennon and has already signed Shaw? Have we ever carried 3 QBs?

        • Huge Bears Penis

simple answer – yes most years we have 3 qbs, one usually ends up on the practice squad or is never active. Btw Shaw was an exclusive free agent meaning he could not sign with anyone but us, and basically had to accept any offer we gave him. He is a camp arm nothing more. He is not going to have some heroic ascension into being great, in fact I would bet my right testicle he gets injured before the season starts..

          • Irish Sweetness

So Glennon/ Draftee ? That’s sad. At least Shaw would be on the PS.

  • Malice Halice

    Jags ain’t fuckin around

    • Jags and Browns have A LOT of $$$

I think both will gobble up the major names.

Pace I think will get Glennon and Gilmore, plus some interesting 2nd tier players, maybe a S, Dline and O guy (esp to replace Alshon/Royal)

    • BearDown100393

        • The thing is, the Jags and Browns have way more $.

And other teams offer a chance at a ring.

We’re stuck in between. Lukewarm and limp.

The Bears had a spectacular 2006. Grossman was Grossman. A PR of 74 and a QBR of 51 in 2006. Hardly spectacular.

    • SC Dave

He was outstanding for about the first four games. Then, not so much.

      • Malice Halice

Wasn’t that year the first he played all 16 games.

        • BerwynBomber

          Yes

          • Malice Halice

Speaking of which… aren’t we actually good when the qb plays the whole season? Cutler only had what, 2 full seasons as a bear right? One of which was 2009

          • BerwynBomber

Don’t know. One of Cutty’s worst seasons was 2014. He played in 15 games but could have played all 16 had he not been benched.

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

It’s amazing how he was able to stay healthy enough to get krypt keeper fired.

      • He won Sept player of month, no?

        (then, the wheels came off)

        • SC Dave

As I recall, he did. Here’s some numbers:

          Week 1 (W, 26-0, GB) 18 of 26 for 262, 1TD, 1 Int, 98.6 rtg
          Week 2 (W, 34-7, Det) 20 of 27 for 289, 4TD, 0 Int, 148.0 rtg
          Week 3 (W, 19-16, Min) 23 of 41 for 278, 1 TD, 2 Int, 64.9 rtg
          Week 4 (W, 37-6, Sea) 17 of 31 for 232, 2 TD, 0 Int, 100.5 rtg
          Week 5 (W, 40-7, Buf) 15 of 27 for 182, 2 TD, 0 int, 101.2 rtg

No fumbles during that stretch either.

Then, the Arizona game, and the whole thing was done.

It was great fun while it lasted. Bears with 156 points versus 36 for the bad guys – right about 31-7 average victory.

I hear you. I read some of Plato’s republic yesterday, we’re at the end of an era my man where all/both sides have to offer is tyranny and tyrants. I’m of the firm belief that the elites well know this and at every waking moment, they’re plotting how to save their asses.

    • Irish Sweetness

That was a lose-lose election if ever I saw one.

  • Snyder didn’t watch any of the Godfathers?

“Kevin Jones of KNBR reports that Washington owner Daniel Snyder “is holding onto bad blood” betweenhimself and 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan. Snyder doesn’t want to
help Shanahan succeed, which could keep the owner from ever signing off on any trade.”

    • Sauron’s right eyeball

Who would they have at QB if not Cousins. Never thought the skins would let Cousins walk.

      • Malice Halice

Id take cousin for 18 mil over Glennon often 14.5

      • Skins would likely get the 9ers #2 which I assume they’d use on a QB.

Though I heard they think they can win with Colt McCoy.

        Skins being Skins

Like one of those moments when you talk to someone and realize they haven’t seen a Francis Ford Coppola movie … or Star Wars …. and you have to accept that, understanding that the person isn’t a piece of shit because of that …. but that they kind of are.

I’ve never seen a Star Wars movie. Does that make me a piece of shit?

“5) Does a move like this excite a single fan?”

Certainly excites me more than another year of Cutty. Or even Hoyer or Barkley.

    • Irish Sweetness

I’m honestly surprised anyone could be excited by Glennon. I’m a Bears fan. I’ll watch. I wish him the best, but I feel that perhaps he hasn’t got the Cutty factor.

      • BerwynBomber

If I hadn’t seen Cutty the last nine years I would agree with you. And yeah, Glennon might suck. But it is something new.

        • Irish Sweetness

2015? When he was healthy? Why look at the middle bit?

          • SC Dave

Why cherry pick his only good season? And no, seven game seasons do not count.

          • Scharfinator

It’s easy to say that, for those same injury seasons, he was a non-factor for 9 games.

            Literal.

  • Irish Sweetness

See lots of love for two 6’3 undersized, underweight DEs in Thomas and Allen. Why?

The only peppers-sized guy is Malik McDowell at the bottom of the first.

He’d be like Floyd’s big brother. Imagine the two of them coming off the edge.

    • Thomas is a 3-4 OLB.
6’3 270 is fine for that.

He has good (not phenomenal) measurables, but his tape is great.

Garrett is really the only combine freak. Well, Howard too and that WR he broke the 40

      • SC Dave

To me, the most striking thing about Thomas is vision. He just *sees* what’s going on, and so he is in a position to make the play with great frequency.

        • willbest

          can’t teach that.

  • Johnnywad

My son read somewhere Glennon’s getting 3 years, $15M from the Bears. I can’t find it anywhere. Anybody else see that?

I wouldn’t hate that deal presuming we can cut his ass for the third pretty easily, or that he’s making peanuts in year three and holds a clipboard.

That would also tell me he’s not THE guy. Wonder if that means they’re drafting one if it’s true at all.

    • Huge Bears Penis

      Tweet from
      Ian Rapoport‏@RapSheet
“When Mike Glennon’s deal is finalized with #Bears, it’s expected to be 3 years for an average of $14.5M, source says. Will still draft a QB”

      • Johnnywad

See I heard 15 over 3 and thought “Hey. 5M per aint bad for this guy.”

I’ve been assuming all along he’s not getting starter money despite the rumors.

        My dumbass is showing.

    • Sauron’s right eyeball

Sounds like it’s structured to pay him as a starter in yr 1 and 2 and as a backup yr 3. If that’s the deal, I like it.

  • DaMurph

Well I think I’ll run right out and get me a Glennon jersey, NOT! I don’t understand this signing one fucking bit! The guy has basically ZERO starting experience. ANY QB can look good for a handful of games, this makes no sense to me at all. I’m frustrated by some of these moves. If the QB you pass on at #3 makes it big and this giraffe neck fucker craps the bed, Pace better sneak out of town at midnight because the fan base will be looking to string him up
    .

    • Johnnywad

Well. Glass half full, he’s 6′-6″. So he has that ever elusive quality of being able to “see over the offensive line”. And being so tall, he probably doesn’t have Rex hands. Hell, his hands are probably at least as big as Trump’s.

      • MB30SD

        Trajectory

    • Big Mike

Mike Glennon is a guy who needs a shot. He actually has more experience than Jimmy G. His experience is also with a shitty team and he put up decent numbers. Fans and the media basically ran Cutler out of town, so now you have to replace him. Hoyer didn’t fit. The Bears knew what he was. Jimmy G would take this year and next year’s #1 pick. So what are you going to do?

Pace did not rule out drafting a QB. Glennon buys him time. The crop this year is not that great. If anything Glennon gives us a little long term upside and a chance to not suck ass next year.

  • 505Bears

So it happened…ugh… This is better than Cutler?! And at $15m/year? They couldn’t have got him for $10-12m? Even that would be overpaying. Yeah yeah, his salary is 20 something among starting qbs, but that’s just it, he’s not a starting qb.

    • Big Mike

You can’t say he’s not a starter. He has started. His team spent the #1 draft pick on a guy, so he went to the bench. The team he played for was awful. There simply aren’t a lot of options at QB. Cutler couldn’t be the Bears QB anymore.

      • willbest

No he went to the bench because McCown outplayed him.

        • MB30SD

          Verizon?

        • Big Mike

          As a rookie, right?

          • willbest

In 2013 (his rookie year) Josh Freeman got the hook after 3 games. Glennon finished out 2013 playing 13 games

He then lost the starting job to Josh McCown for 2014. In game 3 that year McCown was injured. Glennon got 5 starts and then McCown took back over when healthy. In 2015 they drafted Winston and that was that.

          • Big Mike

Thanks for the history recap. I’m hopeful. But I’m always hopeful.

          • BerwynBomber

Again, might have nothing to do with performance.

        • BerwynBomber

How do you know? Maybe he went to the bench because Lovie invested a ton in his boy McCown.

          • willbest

McCown signed a 2-year $10 million deal in 2014. That isn’t a “ton” that was a you are competing for starter money. It just happened to be more than the $3 million that the Bears were offering for him to backup Cutler.

        • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

he went to the bench because Lovie is an idiot, after how many years with the bears do you not know this.

  • ButtonShoes

    3 years, 43.5 million?

    Fire Ryan Pace.

    Now.

    • SC Dave

      Silly response.

      • ButtonShoes

What’s silly is signing Mike fucking Glennon to a 3 year deal for 43.5 million. That is fucking silly.

        • Big Mike

Who should they get and what should they sign him for? That’s just what QBs cost.

          • ButtonShoes

I’d rather they kept Hoyer under center. He’s the definition of a stopgap.

          • MB30SD

            That’s just crazy talk

          • ButtonShoes

Hoyer as starter puts an emphasis on finding a QB in the draft. I don’t think that’s the case with Glennon. I think the Bears (and Pace especially) think that he’s their guy.

          • MB30SD

Have you not been reading the blog lately?

My post was the very definition of sarcasm.

          • ButtonShoes

            My bad.

          • MB30SD

            You’re upset, I understand.

          • ButtonShoes

            Very.

          • MB30SD

            I understand

          • willbest

If we were going to spend 15 million a year on a bridge guy, he is current on the roster with no guarantees

          • ButtonShoes

Exactly. I can’t stand Cutler anymore. And yet I’d rather have him for another year than Mike Glennon.

          • Big Mike

I don’t disagree entirely. I’ve pulled for Cutler, supported him through ups and downs, but he wasn’t the guy. Can’t turn the ball over in a John Fox offense. Cutler was never going to be anything but a gunslinger. On his good days, he’s one of the best in the league. Top 5 no question about it. On his worse days, Matt Barkley outplays him. So statistically, he looks slightly above average. Bears can’t have those swings. Who knows what Glennon brings to the table. I’m excited to see it. As a rookie with a terrible, terrible team (way worse than the Bears) he did not suck. He’s got a few more years’ experience, and he’s very young and maybe he’s a guy that move this train forward. Pace also said they weren’t done at QB and drafting a guy was still a possibility.

          • MB30SD

            *I* can’t have those swings…

          • Big Mike

A fickle group we have here. I hate Cutler, Dump Hoyer, We love Barkley, Draft class sucks at QB. Draft a QB. Cutler gets paid too much. Wait Glennon gets paid too much, Maybe we should keep Cutler.. We hate Jimmy G, we love Jimmy G. If Hoodie likes him he must be great, If Hoodie lets him go we must be getting screwed.

          • willbest

My preferred has been pretty much keep Cutler, draft elite defensive player at #3, pick up Mahomes or Kaaya later. Spend big on FA at DB

          • Big Mike

That’s one way. But who knows right? QBs are unpredictable. What we need is a bolt of lightning from GSH himself to let the Bears find the next Dak Prescott. Getting lucky like that is the only way to really turn a franchise around. Brady, Rodgers, Russel Wilson.. one thing in common, all shocked the world were cheap and solved the QB spot so the team could focus everywhere else. When you chase the QB, it just doesn’t seem to work out. So good luck Mike Glennon.

        • SC Dave

As typical of the meatheads that are the vast majority of Bears “fans”, you assume your team’s QB sucks before he takes a fucking snap.

Like all the QBs before him, I’m sure Glennon will thank you for your stalwart support.

          • MB30SD

And then in usual bears fashion…. Suck.

            Hahahaha

          • ButtonShoes

Mike Glennon has taken snaps before. Just not for the Bears. AND HE SUCKED.

    • Big Mike

Why because starting QBs are expensive? So we can keep rotating general managers and head coaches? Just stop.

      • ButtonShoes

Might as well rotate GMs and head coaches. We’re nearly at a Browns-level of ineptitude here.

        • MB30SD

          Looks not great, but TBD.

  • MB30SD

    Danny woodhead going to Ravens.

Damn, Ozzie is fucking kicking ass and taking names so far.

  • SC Dave

Assuming the deal is actually signed, the die has been cast for Glennon.

We’ll see how it turns out – we just hope Pace/Fox/Loggains know what they are doing.

On the bright side, it seems quite unlikely we will waste #3 on a QB, and instead will get some awesome defended. Just no trade-downs for a fucking another WR bust!

  • BearDown100393

  • MB30SD

Mike glennon is a big TBD.

That said, the NFL tape on him is…. Worrisome.

    • ButtonShoes

He’s a statue in the pocket. If the OL doesn’t hold up, we’re in real trouble. And notice how everyone trying to defend this signing starts talking about his big arm? That’s the same excuse we’ve been hearing about Cutler for 8 years, as if having a big arm alone means anything.

      • MB30SD

Well, it meant a fuckton of INTs if we’re being literal

        • ButtonShoes

Something we are sadly used to at this point.

          • MB30SD

            Perfect!

  • BearDown100393

Pace is paying the guy who lost his starting job to Josh McCown.

    • MB30SD

      Yes!

I think he’s getting bullied into this and it maaaaaay… Cost him his gig.

      • BearDown100393

And as a result a Camelopardalis has uprooted both Cutler and Hoyer. Got it.

  • willbest

I will wait until I see the guarantees before I pass judgement. The report we are still considering a QB is highly troubling in light of the 14.5 mil per year number though. I guess if its 12, 13, 19 with 20 million guarantees its a solid contract. But if its got 30 million in guarantees in it… Pace should get canned.

    • BearDown100393

It took a consultant to tell McCaskey to bring this guy to town.

      • ButtonShoes

Ernie Accorsi can just fuck right off.

  • willbest

Jeebus allmighty… Pats are rumored to be finalizing a deal with Gilmore.

    • MB30SD

      Sigh

Glad pace has his eye on the ball… Signing that blockbuster FA QB!!!

This really isn’t starting as I hoped.

  • willbest

If the Bears splash FA acquisition ends up being Glennon, then I don’t know how the purpose of 2017 is anything but ensuring Fox is fired, and Pace and his hand selected HC enter the 2018 draft picking their QB of choice.

    • MB30SD

      Totally agree.

    • SC Dave

Maybe, but that scenario makes little sense. Then again, given that Ted Phillips is top dog in the “braintrust” gives one pause…

    • Malice Halice

Yep, Fox is done. That’s inevitable. Pace in FA is like watching a girl too scared to jump in the double-Dutch.
I’m not mad just disappointed honestly. But the draft could be vital.

      • willbest

His FAs while not having turned out that great the previous two goes, at least looked good on paper. You can’t predict McPhee and Trevathan not being able to play again. But he has had plenty of hits with Hicks, Freeman. Even Massie played better after the first month.

      • ButtonShoes

Both Fox and Pace need to go. Anyone that would sanction signing Mike Glennon needs to be fucking fired with prejudice.

  • ButtonShoes

The Pats are getting Gilmore? This shitshow just keeps getting worse.

    • SC Dave

Another silly comment. Was Pace supposed to stop the Patriots from signing free agents?

      • ButtonShoes

No, he was supposed to come up with a better offer than the Patriots to get Gilmore. Everyone knew we would have to overpay to get him. Why didn’t we?

  • BearDown100393

All the other playoff teams are signing free agents to get better. They are not wasting time. Sign and move forward. Pace locked and loaded for….. Mike Glennon.

    • SC Dave

I don’t see this as *necessarily* a bad thing. Pace has consistently stated his plan was to address the most important position on the team, QB.

Whether or not Glennon is the right guy remains to be seen.

But Pace did address what he considered the most important position first.

Also, the presumption is that Glennon will not make the Bears better. I’ll wait and see.

  • This reminds me a lot of how the Bears mismanaged the K position last year.

Like now with Cutler, the time was right to move on from Gould.
Like now with Cutler, they replaced him with a middling veteran.
Like now with Cutler, that makes 0 sense given where they are at as a franchise.
Like now with Cutler, the right move is to embrace the rebuild they’re already going through and do everything you can to find the long-term answer.

At K, that means bringing in a young guy who’s shown great ability in the past (like Blair Walsh) and hoping he can re-claim his mojo, or else cycling through available young kickers hoping you can find one who sticks.

At QB, that means investing a high pick in a QB and playing him to see if he’s any good.

    • BearDown100393

Please find some stat other than year of birth to justify this move.

    • This shared approach is concerning to me, because it shows a lack of understanding with where the Bears are as a franchise.

They are in a rebuild, and they have to embrace that.

During a rebuild, you answer as many long-term roster questions as you can. You don’t go for short-term patch jobs. Those are for contending teams trying to extend their window.

Ideally the Bears still go for the long-term and spend a high pick on a QB. Let that QB play by the bye week in 2017. He pans out, and they’re set for the next decade +.

So an ideal situation is that they’re paying Glennon $15M a year to sit on the bench. Which is why I don’t think this move is smart. But it’s only disastrous if they use Glennon to justify waiting until round 3+ to grab their QB. Then the odds drop significantly and they are most likely sitting through 2 years of Glennon before going back to the QB draft well with a high pick in 2019.

  • ButtonShoes

Looks like we’re out on A.J. Bouye, too. No Gilmore, no Bouye, no Wagner, and we sign Mike fuckin’ Glennon. Holy shit this is bad.

    • willbest

JD says we put in a strong offer for Bouye.

      • ButtonShoes

Not strong enough, apparently. Seems like he’s staying in the AFC South. Pace missed out on Jenkins, Gilmore, and now Bouye. He’ll probably miss out on Logan Ryan too.

        • MB30SD

          You forgot wagner

  • BearDown100393

[Agent]: So what are you doing to make this team a contender?

      lol

    • Scharfinator

Sad. Sadder still because it’s true.

    • If you could play for a team that had Tom Brady as their QB or Mike Glennon, with the $$ the same, which would you choose?

  • BearDown100393

2017 Bears Motto: We Tried But Nobody Good Wanted To Come Here. Bear Down!

  • What we’re seeing right now is the downside of an expanding cap.

Almost everybody has money to spend. Which means top FA get competitive offers from multiple teams and can choose a good team where they have a chance to win without sacrificing money.

The only way for the Bears to counteract that would be to go way overboard on the $$, which is not a good idea.

    • willbest

You need 5-6 elite players if you want to compete for a championship. With nearly $170 million those players are going to get paid.

    • MB30SD

But which we’re doing anyway… Only not with a pro-bowler, but with a cuck who every other team bailed on $5 – $6m ago.

      Right. Good plan bears!

      #bearssssssss

    • And then there’s this: Josina Anderson tweeted that Gilmore told her the Bears’ offer was not as strong as he had hoped, so he decided to look elsewhere. If true that’s brutal and a bad look for the Bears.

        Fucking sigh.

Why?!??! We have the cash, why?!?!

        • willbest

Pace doesn’t like to overpay FAs not named Glennon. If you go back and look at his last 2 FA periods his goal has always been value.

          • MB30SD

Yep, and this year that strategy is Fucking us out of every player we needed

          • CanadaBear

Jesus MB you’re a Pace guy. I’m not thrilled about Glennon but I’m willing to give him a chance. And like others have pointed out, Pace is all about not over paying. Hope he hasn’t misread the market.

          • MB30SD

Exact. See my note to yonny.

It’s not even the Glennon deal, it’s is missing all the guys we absolutely needed to add.

Now we’re down to slim FA pickings and the draft. It’s not going to be enough to plug all our gaps maings. It’s just not.

          • CanadaBear

Can’t disagree. I’m truly worried Pace has misread the market with all this cash available. I’m also wondering if that plea from the players rep to not sign in Chicago because of workman’s comp rules has had anything to do with it. Hope not because that’s just stupid. These guys make enough money to buy good insurance.

        • Scharfinator

Think Ted still has his dirty little dick in the GM’s coffee?

Or whatever analogy works for him not letting Pace spend anything.

          • MB30SD

More likely George, they’re both as clueless it would seem

        • Sahr Gborie

… Wait, does his agent also have a freakishly long neck?!

    • Bender McLugh

      lolz

  • Scharfinator

Are we really signing this fucker? SHIT.

    http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-highlights/0ap2000000290357/Mike-Glennon-fumble

Fuck, I’m less excited this year than I was last year. That’s tough to do.

  • willbest

Running out of established and competent WRs too incidentally

Stills, Britt, lafell, garcon, djax, marshall all are headed someplace.

    • SC Dave

It’s okay. We have Kevin White!

    • MB30SD

Running out of everything but Mike glennon. Pace is aaaalllll ooooover that blue chip move!

Way to blow FA outta the water pace!

    • But none for big $$ deals. That’s actually REALLY good for the Bears.

Makes me think Alshon is more likely than not headed back to Chicago, and not for absurd money either.

I don’t get why the WR market is so soft compared to the rest of the FA market, but I’m not complaining.

      • MB30SD

I’m sure we’ll total handle THAT fa event well, god knows pace is on a roll so far.

      • Bender McLugh

        AJ can’t quit us

        • MB30SD

Why not. Looks like Ryan pace may have

          • Bender McLugh

hahah come on man, step away from the ledge! BigBird can’t be THAT bad

      • willbest

I heard on the radio that Jeffery tweeted out a picture at the Philly airport and then deleted it a short time later. I suspect that is where he is going to sign.

  • 505Bears

Did Pace get Little Nicky’d? Is that really Phil Emery in Pace’s body?!

  • Bender McLugh

welp, at least it’s not Romo. silver lining

    • willbest

Romo would have been fun. We could have started 4-1 before his spine imploded.

      • Bender McLugh

        yeah but pre-season don’t count

        • Scharfinator

We’d have to rest him preseason… didn’t you see what happened this year?!

          • Bender McLugh

            see what I did there?

          • Scharfinator

I used to be able to read…

Awesome!! UGH!! Reminds me of a comedy bit where the patsy is supposed to run up the price at an auction, but keeps over bidding until the auctioneer says, SOLD!!…Pace, you patsy ding dong…ugh http://www.businessinsider.com/chicago-bears-sign-mike-glennon-2017-3

    • willbest

I have to believe the contract is backloaded and not guaranteed. Then it makes sense. Something like 12, 13, 20

  • Ron Swanson’s Mustache

Wow, fans are completely freaking out and overreacting already. Shocking.

    • ButtonShoes

It’s not overreacting when the team you root for is seriously fucking things up.

      • Ron Swanson’s Mustache

Sure it is. Maybe it ends up being justified after free agency and the draft are complete but it’s way too early to lose your shit because of Glennon, Gilmore, etc.

        • Bender McLugh

          Glennon inspires though……

          • Ron Swanson’s Mustache

Of course he doesn’t. But what other inspiring options are out there?

And while the contract is more than people expected I’d be surprised if it is structured in such a way that handcuffs the team. It’s still going to be about who they draft this year and next year.

          • Scharfinator

“But what other inspiring options are out there?” This is a fair point.

          • Bender McLugh

I agree about the contract. Other options would have been found in the draft, at least that what it seems at this point. I’d rather have Watson and see how he grew but that’s not likely now.

On the other hand, this definitely does not preclude them from drafting a better QB prospect next year when many more will be available.

          • Ron Swanson’s Mustache

Right. I would not be surprised or opposed to them drafting a QB this year and another next year. Unless Glennon surprises in a positive way, a 3 year deal is not horrendous and QBs, even average ones, are expensive. Of course, with the WRs already off the board, I think retaining Alshon becomes more important.

Maybe all this consternation ends up being on the money but I’d rather let the picture come together after free agency and the draft before I get really annoyed.

          • SC Dave

Wow… a voice of reason among all the hysteria. Thanks for your contributions.

          • Ron Swanson’s Mustache

            No problem!

          • Johnnywad

No shit. Who is this guy?

          • Ron Swanson’s Mustache

Was just checking out a couple of blogs at the start of free agency and found this one. I’m typically too lazy to sign up to comment but I already had a disqus account.

Now I feel like I should pull a Costanza and disappear on a high note. (Seinfeld reference, in case it wasn’t obvious.

          • Irish Sweetness

            Welcome, Ron.

          • MB30SD

I actually don’t care about Glennon I care about doing nothing else in FA while we focus on getting that deal done while all of our coveted fAs go to other teams. And the ones we make offers to say we didn’t even try.

            THAT is very worrying

    • BerwynBomber

The Cuterlites are losing their collective shit.

  • Willie

There is not a QB out there that inspires me with less interest than this Big Bird x Napoleon Dynamite collaboration.

    • MB30SD

      Willie!!!!!

If it gets them to the playoffs twice in the next nine years, it will be an improvement.

    • Bender McLugh

      lower that bar, baby!

      • BerwynBomber

Guilty as charged … but hey perspective after this latest “era” …

        • Bender McLugh

at least we’re all prepped now, right?

  • willbest

Torey Smith to the Eagles on a 3-year 15 mil deal. Another ho hum WR deal. Meanwhile it looks like linemen are racking up the pay.

    • willbest

Colts interested in AJ to pair with TY, in a bucking the trend against paying linemen. I am convinced Luck must of fucked Irsay’s niece or something.

      • BerwynBomber

Didn’t they draft something like 4 OLmen last year? Not that an adding a veteran to mix would be a horrible idea …

    • willbest

Add Robert Woods to the list of WRs. The Bears aren’t going to have anybody if we don’t sign AJ at this rate.

  • CanadaBear

Thanks for all the well wishes! Really appreciate it. I’m a sore mofo today. Oh well, at least I know I’m going to be mobile again.

    • SC Dave

Do the damn rehab, compadre, and get well soon!

      • CanadaBear

        Absolutely! Thanks Dave!

  • willbest

19 million for Glennon. Expensive 1 year deal.

    • willbest

Oh and if they draft a QB at #3 I am going to be super pissed. Because if that was the plan then you could have kept Cutler for cheaper.

      • MB30SD

I will def be out in that scenario. We will be the browns

        • willbest

It feels like somebody put a gun to Pace’s head and said “do something about QB now”

          • MB30SD

            It 100% feels like that

Quit being a giant baby. You’re not leaving.

            I won’t… and I will.

      • CanadaBear

If all of this happens it tells you all you need to know about how POX felt about Cutler.

        • willbest

It also tells you all you need to know about how POX feels about Glennon.

      • Sauron’s right eyeball

Pretty sure some law degrees are transferable in Canada.

    • BerwynBomber

The guaranteed money is all in the first year?

      • willbest

I have no idea where the guarantee happens for cap hit purposes. All we know is its a 3 year deal 19m guarantee, 45ish million total.

What 19m indicates is that Glennon can be gotten rid of after 1 year without significantly affecting the cap. It could be a 11, 12, 20 million deal at which point he is likely to be on the team 2 full years because he isn’t owed much more than his guarantee

  • BerwynBomber

Iggles to release Conor Barwin. Cheese to re-sign Nick Perry.

  • willbest

Bears signing safety Quintin Demps? anybody have his resume handy?

  • willbest

Ha. A lawyer catches fire while litigating an arson case. Can’t make that shit up.

  • BerwynBomber

Cousins has asked for a trade.

    • willbest

To where? San Fran has Hoyer. heh

      • BerwynBomber

Well, you may prove right. Hoyer was never going to be a starter for only 6M.

But it sure would make the SF QB room one of the most expensive in the league, if not THE most expensive.

        • willbest

He is set to make 23.8 million this year. With the tyrod restructuring I think that makes him the highest paid player in dollar amount (not in cap hit) unless one of the defensive studs gets large signing bonus.

          • BerwynBomber

Yup. So SF would be spending 30M in QBs this year. Gotta imagine that outdistances all other teams.

          • willbest

Nobody trades for Cousins unless they have agreed to a deal with him first.

          • BerwynBomber

True but given his “pay me now!” cries the last two years, it would be surprising if all of the sudden he takes a team-friendly deal with someone else.

P.S. I find it somewhat odd he waited until the first day of free agency to go public with this.

          • Johnnywad

Unless they send Hoyer and some picks to Washington.

      • BerwynBomber

Btw, I would not be shocked if Elway comes a-knocking on Snyder’s door. Seems like a bold move the former would do.

But SF will have the upper hand with picks and Shanny connection.

  • willbest

I don’t know if spotrac threw in some random numbers but they have him down for 13.5 million over 3 years. He will be 32 to start the season

  • willbest

neither spotrac or overthecap are set up to handle the site traffic today.

  • leftcoastdave

    Welcome K-mart shoppers . . .

    • chitownproud85

      this.

  • ButtonShoes

The team wants to get young and they sign a 32-year old safety? The Bears never fail to fail.

    • willbest

5 million in the first year

      • ButtonShoes

Good value money-wise. But his age screams Antrel Rolle to me.

        • BerwynBomber

Albeit he will be coached by Fangio and not Tucker.

          • ButtonShoes

Rolle was coached by Fangio, too. Didn’t save him from injury.

          • BerwynBomber

            Ahh, my mistake …

      #youngpunkscansuckit!

    • CanadaBear

6 INT’s last year. Probably his best year. Sure beats the hell out of anything on the Bears roster at Safety.

      • ButtonShoes

I’m all for the INTs. I’m not for the age.

        • willbest

He hasn’t taken a lot of abuse. Spent the first half of his career doing ST work. Just started getting quality reps on defense 4 years ago.

        • CanadaBear

I wish he was younger (I read he’s 31) but at least he can intercept a pass.

          • ButtonShoes

He’ll be 32 when the season starts. So, yeah. Not good. Hopefully he can stay healthy enough to intercept those passes.

        • SC Dave

Not particularly keen on it either, but *if* Pace is going DB heavy in the draft, this may be a ‘veteran leadership’ move, for whatever that’s worth.

      • BerwynBomber

Yeah, I believe that is six more INTs than our starting safeties combined career total.

  • willbest

He (ed. Demps) missed 3 games last year. But in 13 starts he had 6 INT, 9 PD, and a FF 38 tckl 17 assist. This was his career year incidentally, though his 1 year as the Giants FS wasn’t bad.

I don’t know why we would bring him in over Micah Hyde though.

  • Sauron’s right eyeball

Whoever posted last is of the devil.

    #666

    • SC Dave

Looks like it was you, seeing as the dark one himself appears to have flopped that ‘d’ over.

  • chitownproud85

So…I woke up this morning and this Glennon thing is still happening. Da Browns.

  • Johnnywad

Well. He needed to do something about the QB and the Safety position.

Pace may not be right, but at least we know he’s not blind.

    • willbest

Demps isn’t something at the safety position. He is essentially a 1 year stop gap.

      • chitownproud85

…hes only 31(32 before the season starts). Hes shown to be good at creating takeaways, which is the primary defensive shit stain on the Bears undergarments. I’m not sure how this move isnt at least okay, unless everyone is just hung up on his age…and in that case…wouldnt most people be just as pissed if they did nothing at all? Hes not expensive, hes not THAT old, shown he can take the ball away, fills a need…I’m okay with it. It certainly makes more sense than 3 years for the ginger giraffe

        • willbest

I don’t hate it. He should be competent and productive. However we aren’t talking about a difference maker.

          • Johnnywad

Didn’t he just become the best safety on the roster?

I’d add that Free Agency doesn’t start for 3 more hours. Let’s not assume Pace is done yet.

          • willbest

He missed the division championship game against the Patriots with a hamstring. He also missed 3 games last year to a calf injury. And 2 games in 2015 to a hamstring.

  • BearDown100393

Pace is a stop gap GM

    • chitownproud85

      Bridge GM!

    • ButtonShoes

Pace won’t be getting another GM job once he gets fired from the Bears. Just like Emery.

      • willbest

        They generally don’t though.

  • chitownproud85

    Bill Barnwell at ESPN.com:

“Have you ever looked up somebody on Facebook whom you vaguely remembered from a party three years ago and thought they looked great? Have you then paid that person three years and $45 million to come to Chicago and hang out with you? Congrats! You’re the Chicago Bears.”

    Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaap.

    • BearDown100393

Always a chance he fails the physical

  • ButtonShoes

Bouye to the Eagles. Pace fails again.

Edit: Apparently it’s the Jags, not the Eagles. Still a failure for Pace, though.

    • willbest

      Really? reports are Jags

    • chitownproud85

Could just be seen as an acceptance by GM or Coach/GM that this team isnt winning shit this year and overpaying for anything at all doesnt make sense. They arent wrong – Bears double their win total from last year and they are still in the basement. Glennon without Jeffery/another top end WR FA does seem like some pretty bizarre logic though. “Here Glennon, 15 million – now go lose. Immediately.”

      • willbest

Bouye and Gilmore are 25 and 26. Those aren’t exactly win this year pieces. Though they will help you win this year, and if that isn’t your objective then you don’t want them playing.

        • chitownproud85

Are either that good? Honest question – I’m not that familiar with either, and dont konw if we are talking two guys that lock down positions for years to come or just…yanno..the usual free agent market which is overpay for competence, not necessarily pro bowl stuff.

  • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

OH NO!!! the sky is falling!!!!

    • willbest

Since we apparently don’t want to add from the top tier DB talent that is available, and every competent WR not named Jeffery is headed someplace else, its starting to look that way.

    • SC Dave

      It’s something, ain’t it?

  • willbest

    Nick Perry got PAID

  • Malice Halice

This is going to be a interesting year.

    • Malice Halice

Aaaand Torrie smith went to the eagles

    • ButtonShoes

The same way last year was interesting, I think.

  • ButtonShoes

Well, Cutler’s been released. Goodbye, Jay. You never lived up to expectations. It wasn’t solely your fault alone, but you didn’t help things, either.

    • Sauron’s right eyeball

No excuses! The new battle cry at Halas Hall?

      • ButtonShoes

Don’t count on it. The Bears front office is full of nothing but excuses. There’s zero accountability from those assholes.

      • BerwynBomber

Yeah, whither the Cutler Excuses now? It was a robust, cottage industry here for nearly a decade. Gonna be weird without all of them throughout the year — though we are kinda prepped for it during the short stints by guys like McCown, Hoyer and Barkley.

    • BerwynBomber

Yeah, the Cutler Era seems officially over. Quite the rollercoaster. But for all the ups and downs, he was, at the end of the day, a competent, average starter. Nothing wrong with that. But as you said never lived up to the promise.

    • Sahr Gborie

      Very sad right now…

      • BerwynBomber

Buck up. We got nine years out of him.

    • Sahr Gborie

        i don’t give a fuck. he’s not a bear any more.

  • Sauron’s right eyeball

So you’re the Bears GM and the round table concensus is, Cutty’s gotta go. You are smart enough not to get screwed on a one sided deal with the Pats, Cousins is franchised, the backup scrubs on the team had to be managed and failed to inspire, what do you do?

    • willbest

      Apparently give Glennon $19 million

    • BearDown100393

    • Sauron’s right eyeball

Why? No team was willing to offer up a nutsack or even a bag of balls for him.

      • willbest

Would you? The Bears just signed a guy they are paying $19+ million to over the next 2 years. Why would you trade for him when you know he is going to get cut.

        • BerwynBomber

Not to getting in a bidding war for him? I see you argument but I can also see the throwing a sixth rounder at the Bears if someone loves him or his contract.

Could cut either way, I suppose.

          • willbest

Perhaps, but if you traded him to the Browns he would probably just retire. Might even retire if you traded him to the Jets. At least I get to know if my prediction about his value is right or not.

          • BerwynBomber

True. And I may have to concede you were correct.

Though I will always wonder if the QB free agency market would have played out differently if Cousins had thrown his hat in the ring, say, two weeks ago.

    • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

OH NO!!! What are we ever going to do now?
      he’s gone move on.

    • SC Dave

      Good luck, Jay.

      • CanadaBear

Yeah, I don’t get the hate. It’s not like he was trying to suck. A lot of times they were way behind and he had to throw a lot. Of course, a lot of times they were way behind because the TO machine was up and running.

I’d feel better about it, except the team signed Mike fuckin’ Glennon. So I don’t get to enjoy Jay finally being ejected from the city of Chicago, because we replaced him with someone worse.

      • willbest

That probably isn’t true. Glennon is far more likely to play all 16 games.

      • chitownproud85

We’ll still end up with a “high” draft pick QB this year, which is what would have happened whether we signed Glennon or not. So we dont have to tie our boat to Glennon – tie it to whatever incompetent QB the Bears draft because…have you seen the Bears draft QBs?

  • willbest

Well we get to see if Birdcage is up to the task. And I see Pace has gone out and gotten Vic dick all to work with.

    • Ron Swanson’s Mustache

Yes, because the offseason is now over and no other players will be added.

      • willbest

        truth.

  • SC Dave

“According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, Jeffery’s camp is still talking with the Bears about a potential deal as he weighs offers from other teams. Jeffery is also attracting attention from the Colts and Eagles, with each team making a strong push to sign the wideout, Rapoport reported.”

    • Scharfinator

Maybe we do want to keep him. Hmm…

      • 505Bears

Pace will sign him for $67m/year after the Colts and Eagles stop bidding at $12m – $13m/year

        • Scharfinator

$67 bucks? That’s a fucking bargain. How the hell is he gonna eat tho?

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

first NFL player on food stamps, which is a little strange usually it’s just their baby mommas on the stamps

        • willbest

We still don’t know. If 45% of the contract is in the 3rd year then he really wasn’t offering more than the other teams.

      • willbest

The WR market is rapidly shrinking to be just Jeffery.

  • BearDown100393

    No other shall wear 6.

    • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

we can let a K wear it.

    • willbest

I was going to say the Bears don’t have the room to retire any more numbers but then I realize that 1-19 was pretty clear up since on QBs and K/P’s wear those numbers anymore.

  • MB30SD
  • willbest

Rap is reporting Cutler and Jets talking. Him and his RB reunite!

    • willbest

So I just pulled this up… and yikes… No wonder they have an interest in Cutler

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_New_York_Jets_starting_quarterbacks

      • BerwynBomber

Yeah, Cutty will be a significant upgrade over Fitz, Geno and Petty.

Pennington was actually a top 16 QB throughout his career, and I’d certainly rate him higher than Cutler.

Sanchize showed a little promise his first few years — namely because he showed a post-season Eli gene — but then it all went south for him.

  • ButtonShoes

    Seriously, fire Ryan Pace:

    @JosinaAnderson

I’m told, as of now, WR Alshon Jeffery is leaning towards choosing the #Eagles when free agency starts.

    • willbest

Jeffery is going to play with the team that pays him the most.

    • willbest

Jeffery is going to play with the team that pays him the most.

      • ButtonShoes

Ryan Pace and the Bears have completely fucked up today. Thoroughly.

        • MB30SD

I don’t see the AJ situation as a fuck up. I see it as pace not being willing to pay him much more money than he’s worth. I support that strategy, we’ll just have to wait and see what he accepts as a fair deal from another team

          • willbest

So far Pace seems determined as hell to take $60 million in cap into next season.

          • willbest

So far Pace seems determined as hell to take $60 million in cap into next season.

          • MB30SD

yeah, looks that way. Why I have no idea. If it was me, I would have:

            1. Kept Hoyer/Barkley/Shaw
            2. Bought, wagner, bouye, jefferson, the CB, and maybe the other safety.

Fuck being cheap… and when you’re not cheap, why are you not being cheap with mike fucking glennon?

          • CanadaBear

I don’t think he’s cheap. I think in his mind he’s not going to overpay. With the market getting adjusted since so many team are loaded with $, I’m not sure he”s being realistic about the new normal. Anywho, I never thought AJ would come back unless the Bears tagged him.

          • BearDown100393

That’s why he relies on Ted to help him out.

          • ButtonShoes

If he’s not going to overpay, then he’s never going to land a decent free agent. This team has way too many holes for the draft alone to fix them all.

          • CanadaBear

Pace isn’t a splash type of GM. He’s more on point once the first wave gets overpaid. Lots of good players will be signing with the Bears. He’s been pretty good at drafting and FA other than all the injuries. At least he’s not like Angelo that drafted every player that had prior, worrisome injuries.

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

Fangio did a lot with the cucks we had playing, don’t need to overspend, moderate improvements in the defensive backfield will go a long ways.

          • willbest

We need about 4-5 legit playmakers and a dozen starters. We aren’t getting them all in the draft. Some of them have to come day 1 FA

          • ButtonShoes

So who is Glennon supposed to throw the ball to? Kevin White and Cameron Meredith strike fear into the hearts of no one.

          • BearDown100393

            BRAVERMAN

          • ButtonShoes

Well that settles it. We’re going 16-0.

          • MB30SD

dude, we have mike glennon. Which WRs almost don’t even matter any more.

And btw, I think you need to go take a fucking bong hit about now before your heart explodes. It’s only football maing… and it’s not like we’re going from the pats to the browns.

We’re going from a slightly better browns, to the real browns.

    • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

it was nice when we only had to deal with your overreactions on game days.

      • ButtonShoes

Overreaction is warranted when your team is as much of a failure off the field as it is on it.

        • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

FA has not officially started, 3PM Central, there are still a bunch of quality FAs out there, draft hasn’t happened, yet you are wanting to fire everyone. makes sense.

The big money/big splash guys are nice, but not the end of the world if we don’t sign one of them.

          • ButtonShoes

It’s not the end of the world. But it means the Bears will continue to suck. Which I don’t like.

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

no it means we did not overspend. There is still talent if FA to be had that is significant upgrades to what we have. Even that old safety Demps we signed is way better than what we had.

          • CanadaBear

            100%

          • ButtonShoes

Sure Demps is way better than what we had. But what we have is pure garbage. If that’s where we’re setting the bar, this team is never going to improve. I mean, what is Pace saving all that cap space for? Just to save it?

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

and even with the garbage that was out there we had an average defense. A couple improvements and we will be close to a top 10 defense.

          • willbest

They were 23rd in defense last year.

          • CanadaBear

Those last few games were brutal.

          • ButtonShoes

That’s what being 23rd in defense means. You have brutal games like that because the defense is not so great or consistent.

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

            brutal because of injuries.

          • CanadaBear

It wasn’t just all the injuries. It was boneheaded play by backups that weren’t good enough, Plus Barkley going INT crazy didn’t help. Nothing against him, he was put in a terrible spot.

          • Johnnywad

Maybe he has a plan you don’t know about.

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

            nope just fire him.

            See!

          • willbest

My point is that they aren’t getting to 9 wins this season without the splash guys.

          • Johnnywad

            That’s not even remotely true.

          • chitownproud85

Exactly. They arent getting 9 wins this year REGARDLESS

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

            nope we are getting 10.

          • willbest

        • Scharfinator

  • Malice Halice

Pace sitting on all dat money like he can take it home or something. Mf betta start shopping. Wisely

    • BerwynBomber

There is always a second and third wave of free agency after the initial fireworks.

    • Ron Swanson’s Mustache

Most of the deals that get signed on the first day aren’t wise deals.

Note, I’m not saying I’m opposed to a splash either. But splashes and spending wisely don’t go hand in hand.

      • willbest

I don’t think Day 1 FA are any more busts than FAs acquired later.

Massie and Trevathan both played at their contract level for example. At least when healthy.

        • CanadaBear

Just bigger risk because of the $.

          • Ron Swanson’s Mustache

Exactly. Harder to recover from if they bust.

    • Malice Halice

Hopefully we get another S or CB in FA soon. Idk who Demps is

      • willbest

A 32 year old safety coming off his best season. Misses a couple games each year to a hamstring/calf injury. He does a decent job intercepting the ball.

  • Johnnywad

Pretty much everybody with a brain says 2018 at the earliest would be the Bears chance at being contenders for anything. So why the fuck wouldn’t we want Pace to stuff the coffers, draft sharp, cycle through middling quality, affordable free agents, and pull the trigger next March?

    • Bouye is only 25. In 3 years, he’ll arguably be in his prime and ready for the “SB run”

Same with other top 25ish FAs

      • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

he could also just be a 1 year wonder.

        • Said the same with Norman last yr.

And McPhee wasn’t even a 1 yr wonder, but a 1 yr PART TIME wonder in Balt.

At some point, gotta take a chance, esp with flush cap and absolutely need at CB.

Would also give Pace draft flexibility.

          • CanadaBear

I think they take a CB or S at 1. Only if Garrett falls in their lap do I think they don’t go with the aforementioned.

          • Bender McLugh

The just signed Demps for S but that better be a depth move.

          • SC Dave

I think it’s an “experience” move. For whatever that’s worth.

          • CanadaBear

Since 2013 (I know it’s cherry picking but it is pretty decent span of time) he’s had 15 INT’s.

          • ButtonShoes

If we went with Adams or Hooker in the 1st round, that would be pretty good. Just say a big fat “NO” to Jonathan Allen and his arthritic shoulder.

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

nope fire Pace before he even has the opportunity to draft.

          • SC Dave

Adams, methinks. Or maybe that 6’4″ dude, though that would seem a trade-down scenario.

          • Bender McLugh

6’4″ Obi looks solid, but not at #3 I don’t think. Adams seems to be the safest bet at this point even though Hooker is still my guy

          • ButtonShoes

Adams would be great. Only player I’d take over him is Garrett.

          • MB30SD

if we take him @ 3 over adams or hooker the apocalypse will officially be here.

But in the 3rd (after adams in the 1st), hell yes!

          • It’s a deep S and CB class.
But we also need Dline, OLB and ILB.

In other words, we need EVERYTHING on D

Pace is usually good at signing at least ONE FA that we could get excited about.

McPhee filled OLB (at the time). Hicks last season for DE.

            This year? TBD…

          • CanadaBear

I think you’re under selling DT and Freeman. We were all pretty jacked about that. AND CD was officially gone!!!!!!!!!!!!!

          • Yes, them too.

            But that’s what I mean.

Pace signed at least one guy to really upgrade a position.

Maybe this year it’s Alshon – not a new guy, but still, a MAJOR upgrade over say Meredith.

And if Glennon pans out, well, that over rides everything else.

          • CanadaBear

You and I were right about him being released and I was anyone but so Glennon is fine with me. From what I’ve read it’s a 1-year deal and eat some money or a hell of a 3-year deal. If they still go QB early (1-2) it still isn’t a crippling amount of dough at the position. I read a long time ago they were smitten with Peterman and I have no issue with that but in rd 3. Who knows? Fun time of year for football nuts.

          • Oh, you read they fancied Peterman?

Didn’t read that, but I really hope so.

He’s Trubisky-lite but with better decision making, albeit lesser zip.

            And won’t cost us #3.

yeah, it was all about the Glennon contract.

Everyone knows I preferred Hoyer since I was right about his contracting hovering around the $5M mark.

But I can understand taking a flier on “ceiling” esp if the contract doesn’t burden us going forward.

          • willbest

I don’t think he is expected to start next year. He is there incase their #2 pick doesn’t or they don’t get Cousins or whatever

          • CanadaBear

Sounds like they overpaid but if he pans out we’ll be dancing a jig. Stranger things have happened, esp to the Beloved. Also, they coached Peterman in the Senior Bowl. I think that’s when I read it.

          • As long as it’s the McCaskey’s $ and not Bear cap, I’m fine with the $.

But if his extra $10M or whatever prevented us from signing say Gilmore or Alshon, then that’s a dip shit move cuz could’ve just kept Hoyer and built everything else.

But, hey, Qb league. I guess you gotta overpay for “upside”.

      • MB30SD

but the dude we just picked up is 32!! that’s almost the same as 25

      • Johnnywad

There will be more where he came from next year.

        • They will cost just as much, and no guarantee the market will be robust.

It fluctuates from yr to yr.

Next year it could be a dry market at CB. The best one could be some 30 yr old.

This yr both Bouye and Gilmore were pretty elite.

Will they pan out – who knows?

But Pace must swing for the fences eventually.

Maybe he doesn’t until he finds his franchise QB and hand selected HC

          • Johnnywad

Suppose he drafts a stud and finds a nice FA pick up at safety along the lines of a Hicks level player?

There are so many variables, I’m just not going to kick dirt on the corpse yet when FA starts in 45 minutes and the draft is next month.

          • It’s about increasing odds.
And Pace himself claimed that FA complements the draft – that signing quality FAs gives GMs more flexibility and freedom in the draft to prevent from reaching because of need.

Of course, Pace could draft 3 All-Pros and everyone would forgive and forget.

But signing a blue-chip FA like Gilmore, Jefferson, etc doesn’t prevent him from drafting well.

    • BerwynBomber

The plan seems fine to me, thus far. Maybe Hoyer as a cut-rate bridge would have had its appeal but Glennon has more upside.

Plus, I suspect Pace will be a lot more busy in free agency in the coming weeks — i.e., once the bargains take the place of the big ticket items.

        • ButtonShoes

Sounds about right. When you’re a shitty team and you keep being that way, why should people pay attention? Better to pay attention to teams that win or want to win, like the Cubs and Blackhawks. Even the White Sox, who seem to finally be trying to do something to be competitive.

          • Bender McLugh

            FEEL IT

          • willbest

Doesn’t he have 3 houses now?

          • evantonio

a home in burlington, where he lived the bulk of his adult life, that’s valued at 320k today, 250k in 2011, and i’m sure much less when they bought it decades ago.

a condo in washington, where he’s worked and lived (when not home in VT) for decades, that’s also valued way below the stately brownstones many other senators pony up for.

as for the third house, they sold his wife’s home that she inherited from her parents, and used the money to buy a new one at 575k.

i am ok with all of this.

        • Irish Sweetness

          Most? All.

    • willbest

WTF… its FA day and you come in with this shit? Can’t you just bookmark it and bring it up tomorrow?

      • SC Dave

Well, he keeps posting it thinking anyone cares.

        • Float that Air Biscuit (GP)

well you two fucks don’t – I get that

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

i don’t give two fucks about it either.

        • evantonio

do you agree? do you think net neutrality is the problem with our nation’s healthcare?

          • willbest

            That isn’t what he said.

          • evantonio

“Isn’t that kind of a similar analogy, is that a pretty good analogy in terms of what net neutrality is all about, not allowing for example a company that is going to invest billions of dollars in the pipeline, not allow them to sell a prioritized lane, for, I don’t know, doctors who want to prioritize distant diagnostics? They’re going to have to share that same pipeline, no prioritization, with for example people streaming illegal content or pornography? Tell me where that analogy is maybe not accurate.”

In other words, “seems like net neutrality is making doctors’ jobs harder.” The interpretation is there. I know you see it. 😉

          • Scharfinator

Not caring about politics on a sports blog isn’t THAT weird.

          • evantonio

you’re 100% correct. but SC Dave does care.

  • BerwynBomber

    MIN now interested in Alshon.

  • ButtonShoes

On NFL Network, Ian Rapaport is saying the Vikings are making a hard push to land Alshon. FUCK.

    • willbest

They have Diggs and that other guy. WR is not their problem.

      • ButtonShoes

I don’t like our players going to division rivals.

        • Johnnywad

Well, he has six touchdowns over the last two seasons. So how worried are we really supposed to be?

Bradford is a solid QB. But he beat all the odds finishing a season last year.

Vikings don’t scare me. Not even with AJ.

          • Irish Sweetness

How about AJ and Cutty? Throwing against Tracy ‘No legs’ Porter?

    • Ron Swanson’s Mustache

So is that 6 teams Rapaport has now said are making a hard push for Alshon?

  • Damn

    Texans traded Oz to Browns.

    Romo to Texans?

    • Scharfinator

      TRADE CUTTY TO TEXANS

      • SC Dave

Maybe we can get a 6th round pick.

        • willbest

Been a free agent since this morning apparently.

          • SC Dave

That was how I read it too, but I thought it said the Bears told him they were releasing him, not *actually* doing so. But that was pretty early today.

    • willbest

DA FUK. Do the Browns exist solely as some sort of NFL purgatory/clearing house?

      • Bender McLugh

        yuuuuuuuuuup

        • willbest

Wait the browns got Oz and the Texans second rounder?

      • Malice Halice

Hopefully pace realized sloppy 2nds ain’t coo

    • BerwynBomber

      The Clowns …

      • SC Dave

They had RG III. Oz is probably an upgrade.

        • Irish Sweetness

They just Out-Brownsed the Browns. Wow. I did not see that coming.

  • ButtonShoes

The Browns must really want that 2nd round pick.

  • ButtonShoes

    http://www.sportingnews.com/nfl/news/nfl-free-agency-rumors-bears-sign-mike-glennon-tampa-bay-backup-quarterback-jay-cutler/fta6vfvrqc171mn5b7jri183x

    Key paragraph:

“With a move like this, should anyone be surprised the Bears have two straight seasons of double-digit losses since John Fox and Ryan Pace were hired as head coach and general manager? That not-so-dynamic duo has bungled the quarterback position from the start.”

    • Scharfinator

I’m not sure what they could have done with Cutler’s albatross contract last year. People weren’t trading for him.

    • haha.

Yeah, Pace didn’t give five 1st rounders for Mariotta. Damn him!
Then, after Cutler had his best NFL yr and looked like he turned the corner, Pox gave him a chance on a modest remaining contract. Damn him!
Pace didn’t prevent Gase from leaving. Damn him!
Pace didn’t want to bend over for Jimmy G. Damn him!
Pace wasn’t psychic enough to draft Dak. Damn him!

    • Bender McLugh

seriously, get the fuck outta here with that shit

  • So a mid 2nd rd pick costs $14M per yr according to Costner/Browns analytics.

    • willbest

I said we should have done that with Cutler. Just bonused out $10 million to him and traded him for a 2nd.

      • The Browns owner OKed the move, eating the $ for the draft pick.

Would the McCaskeys do the same?

        • willbest

Who knows. They don’t seem to want to spend their money this year.

        • ButtonShoes

          Nope.

  • willbest

Biggest winner of the Browns trade is either Tony Romo or Jay Cutler.

    • BerwynBomber

Probably Culter. HOU is reportedly unwilling to trade for Romo. Hence, Jerra will probably have to crawl to Elway.

    • Bender McLugh

      very good point counselor

    • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

It’s going to be Cutler. It’s the reason Romo hasn’t been released and we did not spend all our cap is we are going to trade for Romo

  • MB30SD
  • MB30SD

    One last look boys!

    Behold the gallery of sadness…

    http://www.espn.com/nfl/photos/gallery/_/id/18184529/image/1/jay-cutler

    • CanadaBear

      Not going there!

      • MB30SD

        hahahaha

  • willbest

I think I would rather be cut than be traded to the Browns in a salary dump.

    • CanadaBear

I honestly think POX are doing this as a favor for Jay for all the years of service. Good on ’em.

      • Oh yeah. The Bears could’ve kept Jay till training camp I think with small bonuses.

But if a QB goes down again, we might be kicking ourselves for not keeping him for trade value.

Gotta clean the stench though, so I get it.

    • MB30SD

      depends on the salary.

Can be one and done financially right? Play for that sheite one year and never have to work again.

      Deal!

  • willbest

Jesus, the Browns are contemplating just releasing Oz

    • Scharfinator

LOL what? This isn’t true, but too funny

      • willbest

That is what Rap tweeted. I mean he is a solid backup, and you already spent the money.

        • Scharfinator

Why would you cut the guy you just traded for? Just to get better picks?

Lol thats mercenary as fuck if so

          • willbest

I think they got the Texan’s 2nd and 4th rounder and Oz for their 6th rounder. Or maybe their 4th and the Texan’s 6th. Either way it was purely a situation where the Texans wanted cap room and the Browns wanted draft picks.

          • SC Dave

I wonder what “the rest of the story” is. Seems a lot of money for a second round pick.

    • ButtonShoes

I’m seriously impressed with the Browns here.

      • willbest

        buying draft picks?

        • ButtonShoes

Yup. They have 11 picks in each of the next 2 drafts, including 2 1st and 2 2nds this year, and 3 2nds next year. If you hit on both drafts, that’s the beginning of a Super Bowl contender right there. They could even spend some of that pick capital on trying to land Garoppolo, and still be set when it comes to the draft.

          • MB30SD

you just put the words “if you hit on both drafts”, “The Browns”, and “beginning of a super bowl contender” in the same paragraph.

reel it the fuck back in dude.

          • Bender McLugh

            lol Factory!

          • ButtonShoes

Everything hinges on their new regime knowing what the fuck to do in the draft. If they do, they’re geniuses. If they don’t, well, they’re still the Browns then.

      • Johnnywad

Think about what you just said. That means everything you know to be true is a lie.

  • BearDown100393

This thread should be printed out and delivered to Halas Hall.

  • willbest

Romo just instagramed his goodbye to Dallas, so I presume he is getting released afterall.

  • willbest

Jeffery to the Eagles per Biggs

    • ButtonShoes

      Welp.

    • MB30SD

      Cya!

    • Bender McLugh

aw boo, I did want him back. not too sad about it though. WR in the 3rd?

      • willbest

Pryor or Floyd. Everybody else means you can add WR at #3 as a possibility.

  • willbest

1 year $14 million. I guess nobody could meet Jeffery’s long term demands

    • WR market very soft.

And he was supposed to be the top one.

      Pace correctly judged his value.

      • willbest

In truth Jeffery could make more money running around the league on 1 year deals than he could in a 5 year bit.

        • Johnnywad

Unless he plays six games a year.

          • MB30SD

            which he will

        • That only works if you are indeed elite and stay healthy like Revis did for years.

          • MB30SD

“I’d love to win a championship in the city of Chicago.”

  • willbest

Bouye to Jags for 13.5 mil a year. We couldn’t beat that?

    • MB30SD

      fuckingsigh

    • ButtonShoes

Pace won’t overspend past his number. That’s the kind of GM he is.

    • I guess Pace doesn’t gamble on 1 yr wonders, unless they’re inj prone like McPhee and White.

      • Johnnywad

        White wasn’t injury prone.

        • SC Dave

          Clearly

          • willbest

he meant at the time we gambled on him.

          • Johnnywad

Drafting a raw athletic talent with no injury history is not “gambling on a 1 year wonder unless they’re injury prone”.

          • willbest

He did only have 2 years of college ball. If he had 3-4 years perhaps these injuries would have manifest. Kudos to White for getting his money before his body broke down. But it didn’t help the bears at all.

          • CanadaBear

He’s got nothing on Gaines Adams. Too soon?

          • willbest

I laughed. But yes. too soon.

          • CanadaBear

I knew you would. If not, I was going to blame it on the painkillers!

          • MB30SD

            Yikes!

          • CanadaBear

It’s part of my secret love for Gllbert Gottfried.

  • ButtonShoes

Gilmore to the Pats. Bouye to the Jags (just confirmed by Schefter). Alshon to the Eagles. And we get Mike fucking Glennon, Quintin Demps, and Dion Sims. Now I just need to build a catapult so I can shove Ryan Pace into it and launch him into the Lake.

  • willbest

    Reilly Reiff to the Vikings.

    • ButtonShoes

Lost out on Wagner and Reiff, too. Wonderful.

  • SC Dave

So we have no wide receivers now.

    • willbest

      Meredith is a legit #2

      • SC Dave

Okay, we have no #1 receiver now

        • willbest

Pryor and Floyd are still out there.

          • MB30SD

both please. We do that and we’re fine at WR.

Just keep both away from any bars, clubs, parties, dispensaries, dark alleys, etc… etc…

          • Johnnywad

That’s all of them. Fuck. AJ got suspended.

          • CanadaBear

Yeah, the only place they should play is GB. Not hard to stay on the straight and narrow in that area. In truth I really like the area. The cheese not so much.

          • MB30SD

too bad Utah doesn’t have a team

          • CanadaBear

Welcome to Utah! Now set your clocks back 200 years.

          • Johnnywad

I’d like to see Manziel and Gordon land together in Vegas. Then they get a TV show. It would be epic.

          • MB30SD

hahahaha, yeah, but it’s hard to get into shows that last 2 weeks

          • ButtonShoes

            Pryor’s visiting the Redskins.

          • Haven’t heard either linked to Bears.

But obviously Pryor would be mark.

Floyd gotta find out if he likes booze more than football.

          • Johnnywad

I think we already know the answer to the last question.

          • Irish Sweetness

Floyd the drunk? No thanks. He can’t control himself, why would we want him?
            (climbs on high horse)
Pryor … yes, thanks. Torrey Smith … there’s a rake of them out there.

    • MB30SD

no, that’s not fucking true daaave!!

We have 1 WR… and no CBs or Safeties.

    • Saruman for America 2020

Hey, don’t forget future HoF-er Braverman!

      • BearDown100393

      Good lord.

      • willbest

He wrote an article pissing on Cutler’s grave earlier. I am sure he will talk about that for the next few weeks.

        • MB30SD

          uuuuhhhhgggggg… brutal.

    • according to same twit

#Bears wanted A.J. Bouye for 6 years. #Jags got him for 5 years, $13.5 million per & $26 million guaranteed per my guy @mikecwright.

  • willbest

Rap is reporting that even though Tony Romo said goodbye, Jerra has quit him yet.

  • willbest

I need something from Pace that signals that the Bears organization gives a shit about 2017.

    • MB30SD

Um… does the entire day so far not send the message loud and fucking clear?!?!

      Hahahaha

    • BearDown100393

      Increased ticket prices

  • willbest

Vikings apparently put a multiyear deal with more guarantee. So Jeffery really is going the Revis route.

  • willbest

“I’d be surprised if he ever flies to Cleveland.” – Jeff

    also funny

  • ButtonShoes

    “dan durkin @djdurkin

  • ButtonShoes

    “dan durkin @djdurkin

Ryan Pace last week in Indy: “Ideally in free agency, we’re addressing most of our needs to allow the draft to be best-player-available.”

He is so full of shit.

    • It could be that no one wants to play for us.

So that leaves us with mercenaries.

That’s what happens for sucking for so long.

      • willbest

        FA is always about mercenaries.

        • Not really.

A lot of players usually prefer signing with a team that

          A. they have a history with (OC, HC, player-friends)
          B. Winners

For some (Alshon) it’s all about making the most, but a lot of them get offered more or less the same amount of $, but A. and B. tip the scales.

  • Fuskie 42

Being a bears fan for the last 25+ years I have seen the ups and downs from Super Bowl teams to 3-13 cellar dwellers but for some reason this regime and this offseason is really getting to me. How do I as a Bears fan get excited with the signing of a QB who doesn’t even have the ceiling of the guy he is replacing, the GM letting his BEST offensive weapon leave for a 1yr-14 mill contract,
and the “biggest signing of the day” is a past his prime was a street free agent 2 years ago safety? This whole thing seems very unorganized. All the players we heard they were targeting like Bouye and Gillmore I don’t think they ever even considered them it was all just to just keep fans interested.

    • Bouye and Gilmore (and others) didn’t want to play for a loser organization.

That’s the price of sucking for so long.

And apparently, Pace hasn’t experienced that moment of clarity that the Bears are the Browns, and like the Browns, will have to overpay for talent.

      It’s a deadly combo.

Pace must now draft like Costner to stop this deathspiral.

      • Fuskie 42

It’s a sad day when a charter franchise with so much history has fallen so far!

        • Fuskie 42

I blame the owners too they need to sell this sinking ship before we have absolutely nothing to root for!

          • They won’t sell till Ginny dies, and even then, who knows?
They can’t even fire Ted fucking Phillips

          • ButtonShoes

The McCaskeys won’t be able to afford the tax implications that come crashing down on them when Ginny finally dies. They’ll sell then whether they want to or not. Hopefully we get ownership that wants to build a winning organization instead of the joke they currently are.

          • MB30SD

this I can and will agree with. I doubt it happens, but we’ll see.

          • willbest

I don’t know. Its beginning to look like sucking donkey balls to drive the value of the franchise down in the eyes of the IRS agent who is paid $100k to look the other way, seems like the strategy there.

          • MB30SD

            we’re almost already there dude.

    • SC Dave

I’ve been on for over 50, and there is little more to add.

Being a Bears fan has always been about single players.

And right now, ALL WE HAVE is Jordan Howard. Please dont get fucking ruined!

      • MB30SD

        freeman

        • willbest

          Floyd showed some promise too

        • SC Dave

          Yeah… okay. He’s good.

          • Irish Sweetness

I agree. We have Howard and Floyd. I’ll give the three interior OL a pass. But that’s it.

  • BerwynBomber

This will be his 6th year.

          • BearDown100393

            Captain McManis

          • SC Dave

            Yikes!

        • BerwynBomber

And I didn’t cheat — I remember looking at the roster early in the year and seeing he was high up on the tenure list, which was doubly odd in that he is probably about the 53rd guy to make the team each year.

        • Irish Sweetness

Nah. We cut him didn’t we? Then signed him back.

  • MB30SD

I think you nailed it with this butch:

And apparently, Pace hasn’t experienced that moment of clarity that the Bears are the Browns, and like the Browns, will have to overpay for talent.

    It’s a deadly combo.

  • BearDown100393

Nobody who is anybody wants to become a Bear.

  • ButtonShoes

    “Adam Hoge‏ @AdamHoge

Not so stunning considering the Bears are now the Browns.

    • BearDown100393

The Browns are happy they aren’t the Bears

      • MB30SD

        today at least

      • willbest

they went all kevin costner today. kinda fucking awesome.

          • BearDown100393

Thought it sounded like a stupid science experiment at first. Then I watched him….then again…and again…just kept balling. Cant see how he wouldnt be an upgrade to everything else on the roster…and might come cheaper than AJ?

        • MB30SD

          don’t get your hopes up

          • chitownproud85

True. This need to rationalize everything and anything shows just how broken we are as a fan base. When you have no ACTUAL faith, or proof, you start resorting to mental gymnastics to make it all seem better.

          • MB30SD

            here’s a fact: it’s not all better.

          • ButtonShoes

Not only that, it’s probably going to get worse.

What does Jordan Howard think of what the Bears did (and didn’t do) today? :

That…is fucking amazing. I love JH even more now lolllllllll

      • ButtonShoes

He and Kyle Long are quite literally all I have to be positive about when it comes to this team.

        • BearDown100393

Kyle Long is strung out on pain pills and held together with ducttape

    • Irish Sweetness

Jordan knows Cutty was a baller, and the AJ threat is gone now. He knows what’s up.

Wait til they draft Leonard ….

  • willbest

“If Pace wanted to spend a fortune he could have. Bears chose not to overpay guys.” – Jeff

“They chose where the cash was. Gilmore was shocked the Bears wouldn’t meet the Pats money.” – Jeff

The Patriots almost never overpay anybody. And people also need to keep in mind that the cap is up ~30% over the last 4 years. There are new formulas for what people are worth.

    • MB30SD

I think pace was sick the day that memo went out

    • chitownproud85

If the Pats signed someone YOU were considering signing, you did it wrong. Period. The Pats win – they always win. Yes, Brady covers up more warts than anyone in human history, but cmon – i think they deserve the benefit of the doubt with personnel decisions. They sign, you dont = you lost

CornWash to the Lions. 2-year $6 million, $8 million with bonuses

    • ButtonShoes

Good riddance. Another useless Emery draft pick, gone.

      • willbest

solid money for him though. That isn’t league min money.

        • ButtonShoes

Oh, definitely. He fleeced the Lions good.

    • chitownproud85

liked him. wish he would have stayed, but i guess the 3-4 thing didnt really fit with him

    • CanadaBear

Wish him well. Couldn’t stay healthy or get over the hump.

Why are Royal and Houston still on the roster?

    • BearDown100393

      We now need them.

      • willbest

  • Sactowns#1

    Is this real life?!

  • Ron Swanson’s Mustache

Staying patient but it’s difficult to not be somewhat disappointed after seeing AJ signed for a year. Still going to wait to see how the next handful of days play out.

    • MB30SD

I think that’s best. that way, when you finally freak the fuck out that pace just face planted in the one FA period where he needed to be his best, you have actual facts and not rumors to base it all on.

      good for you!

      • CanadaBear

I’ll bet Pace would be surprised how quickly you turned on him.

        • MB30SD

          hahahaha, him?!?!? Fuck, I WAS!!

Look, here’s what I thought he would do:

          1. Be smart about our QB situation and just be like water (take the path of least resistance since it doesn’t matter all that much next year). i.e., go with what we had

          2. Pick up CRITICAL d holes:

2a. bouye, jefferson, gilmore… yes, like fucking all of them. Or at least two of those listed.

2b. Wagner to boost our OL

          3. I am fine with the AJ thing, although I was surprised he took a 1-year deal. He obviously didnt want to be in Chi, no matter what, so C-ya!

          4. He did do the right thing with cutler. Yaaaay!

          5. You lock yourself in a room and don’t take a real shot on anyone else we desperately need because you’re working feverishly on a blockbuster deal for…. mike fucking Glennon?!?!

Damn man. I really thought he was going to smash all the naysayer this offseason and come out 6-guns ablazin’. I’m pretty shocked at the delta between what I thought was a very logical (but admittedly hyper aggressive) strategy, and what he’s actually come out and done (basically fucking nothing)

How have we gotten better today… and after today there won’t be much left on the shelves.

          • MB30SD

fuck, when the only two upvotes I get are buttons and malice, that’s not a good sign for my mental state today.

            hahahaha

          • Malice Halice

Can’t help but agree with it tho. All the good meat flying off the shelf. And Pace wanna get that “Managers Special”

          • Irish Sweetness

  • Ron Swanson’s Mustache

I will say, at least so far, the measured approach makes me think Pace may not be concerned with his job security. I wonder if he has been guaranteed his 4th year behind the scenes.

At some point, you have to make a splash like the Cubs did. Maybe they’ve determined this is the time.

I’m hardly Pace’s biggest fan but FFS let this play out a bit. There are a million holes to fill. I think Demps will be the best safety around here for quite a while.

    • ButtonShoes

There are a million holes to fill because Pace keeps making them. One after the other.

      • Ron Swanson’s Mustache

I’m in wait-and-see mode on Pace but he inherited a shit-show devoid of talent. It wasn’t going to be a two-year fix.

That being said, I look forward to hearing his rationale for the moves he ultimately does and does not make in free agency.

        • ButtonShoes

His rationale will be bullshit. Elegantly crafted bullshit. All designed to distract from his fuck-ups.

        • willbest

I am not convinced that the 2017 roster is going to be better than the 2014 roster he inherited.

        • What can he say?

          1. “Players didn’t want to join our suck-ass team”
          2. “The McCaskey’s told me not to spend their $”
          3. “I’m an idiot and grossly miscalculated the market.”
          4. “I’m a genius and don’t need FA, only the draft”
          5. “I’ve been sucking to dump both Cutler and Fox for Darnold and McDaniels”

          • MB30SD

            after his 6 games… I won’t be too surprised

realistically, he’ll go all in year 1, then turn back into his usual.

Jeffery’s two best years weren’t contract years.

          • EnderWiggin

How would that work? Would he get paid as a first year tag or second year tag?

          • willbest

It would be his second tag. And likely to only be 16.8 instead of the 17.3 we would have had to pay.

  • BearDown100393

Brock’s career with Browns to end

    • willbest

Trade or cut is the word

“Big fear with Pace when he got hired was that he’d do what Nola did and
bury the Bears in bad contracts. He’s committed to not doing that.” – Jeff

That isn’t entirely true. If he doesn’t spend 92% of the cap over 5 years, the McCaskeys are required to just rain down money in the locker room until they are square with the players. At present, there are no facts on the record to contradict this occurrence as a Pace objective.

So what is the deal on Alshon? Has anyone heard or read anything that explains the one year contract? Did the Bears lowball him that badly? Was he that set on getting the F outta here? Did he turn down multi-year deals and decide to “bet on himself”?

The whole thing is odd …

    • BearDown100393

      He’s stupid.

      • SC Dave

Young ones… and his ex was right!

    • SC Dave

He *may* have been advised to wait until next season’s QB draft picture settles out. Or to see if Wentz is the real deal.

Or maybe, he’s jusr a small town SC boy being led by his agent.

      Regardless, $14M ain’t hay.

      • BerwynBomber

But that seems like very risky advice given his last two years and especially in a sport like football. Hell, even in hoops and baseball it can be risky to bet on one’s self like that.

        • SC Dave

          $14M is a risk? Really?

Think about it. Last year and this… $28M+

          Think. About. It.

In small town SC? Generational wealth already.

          • BerwynBomber

Depends on what he saw on the multi-year deal front. But I am assuming the latter would have been significantly higher than 14M guaranteed.

          • SC Dave

            So what? $14 MILLION?

Who on this blog would not DREAM of $14M guaranteed?

I’d play a year, hope to not have my body destroyed*, and be done.

            * the best defense is a good offense

          • Irish Sweetness

You could take my cock for $14M.

    • willbest

From what I gather, Jeffery could either sign a multiyear deal in the 12-13 million range, or take a single year 14 million deal. We have no way of knowing, but you figure min 2 years, max 2.5 year guaranteed money. So 25-30 million is likely.

Pros of a 1 year deal:
      * 1-2 million more money this year
      * The cap will be higher next year than this year, pushing WR salaries up.
      * ODB and Mike Evans push the ceiling up.
      * Just eyeballing the 2018 FA market, it looks like fewer serviceable WRs next year than this year which should drive prices up

      Cons:
      * If he under performs or is hurt his value takes a hit. Though perhaps not appreciably. Somebody would probably still give him 11 million a season.
      * He wanted to avoid a 2-year deal, but he is easily taggable next year for around $17 million forcing him into a 2-year deal and putting him out at 29 missing the best long term contract years of 26-28

Basically, if he plays like the top 15 WR he is, and avoids serious injury he is going to be better off on a 1 year deal than locking himself into a team friendly deal. And it would be team friendly to lock up Jeffery for 4 years at 12.5 million a year while the cap heads its way to 200 million.

    • MB30SD

      Doooooont caaaaaaaare

  • BerwynBomber

Interestingly enough, the Bears probably did more right by Cutty (in releasing him) than Jerra seems to be doing in demanding a trade for his boy Romo.

Though given how Jerra was always trying to guilt Romo onto the playing field as quickly as possible after an injury, this should come as no surprise.

  • BerwynBomber

Adams (only if we get the big FS in the 3rd), Hooker, THEN adams.

        We have dline already.

        • willbest

Thomas looks like he could beat double teams.

          • MB30SD

agree 100%, but again, we have a bunch of dlinemen… including the one we took @ #7 last year… and we have literally zero DBs worth a shit.

          • willbest

Well we were supposed to have Bouye or Gilmore to go along with Mich Hyde or some quality safety that isn’t a 1 year stop gap. So drafting a DB wasn’t critical. Now it Fing is. And then we get to watch Thomas get said in the same breath with Von Miller and JJ Watt

          • MB30SD

            correct.

Winning! just pray no one in the NFCN gets him.

          • Malice Halice

What if pace give up Glennon to the Jets or so to move back into the 1st round or early 2nd to get more Db’s?

          • SC Dave

Total ludicrous fantasy… the lack of reality here on FA expectations was comical.

Like that Buttons stupidity about not getting Gilmore…. ho ho ho…

Fire Pace because someone wanted to be a Patriot. Laughably idiotic.

        • SC Dave

Sorry… thought Adams was the LSU safety.

          • MB30SD

            He is

        • SC Dave

Oh, and that mutant 6’4″ safety…. round 2?

          • MB30SD

            3rd round

    • willbest

Its because you are realizing that Glennon is your QB1. Back when Cutler was your QB1, it was actually fucking stupid to draft a QB that wasn’t going to replace him at #3. But now that its Glennon, you are thinking “meh, maybe a flier”

      • MB30SD

        not cutler, hoyer. but basically

        • willbest

You really were sold on Hoyer as the next Kurt Warner?

          • MB30SD

not at all. He’s a cuck.

My thought was, if he can just maintain something similar to what he did last year and we blow out D in FA/the draft, we’d win at least 5-6 more games.

He knew the system, the players, the coaches, everything. And he’d be $5-$6M. Like zero boat rocking. anyway, whatevs, it’s the new world order now

          • SC Dave

            All this. But…. no

            Shaw better be the man

          • MB30SD

yes, we found that out today. lot of nos.

            no wagner
            no bouye
            no jefferson
            no gilmore

            no fucking luck

          • SC Dave

Yup. I cant see the plan.

I just hope its not to destroy Jordan Howard on a fucking rookie contract while we wait

          • SC Dave

            That would be Glennon now

    • SC Dave

      DAMNIT MB

      DBs!!

      • MB30SD

oh don’t try to fucking sweet talk me back now.

        • SC Dave

I’ve been on it all along, so whatever

Edit: except for Thomas, of course

        • Malice Halice

We can get D Watson in da 2nd round.

          • MB30SD

            you’re dreaming yo.

There’ll be a run. And from pretty much all accounts, watson is the only one worth half a shit this year. the rest are 2-3 yr clipboard projects.

          • Malice Halice

            He’s worth the wait

          • MB30SD

no I meant, there no way in hell he’s making it outta the 1st round dude.

          • Malice Halice

            That’s certain

          • MB30SD

            I’m confused.

          • Malice Halice

At the rate shit is going d.watson might be available late 1st round. I can see pace doing some off da wall shit to move up to get him

          • SC Dave

Browns taking him with their second pick in round 1

          • Malice Halice

Naw they dropping both picks on Jimmy g

          • SC Dave

            No

          • MB30SD

            That’s what I think

        • SC Dave

Oh, and GP will be back. Guaranteed.

          • MB30SD

Well I’m glad you’re at least feeling like a dick for saying what you said

          • SC Dave

I’m not, actually. There is nothing I wrote that was in any way worse than 85% of the bullshit GP posted on this blog since the election. And 85% is being charitable.

  • SC Dave

Please let us not destroy Jordan Howard on a rookie contract through organizational incompetence..

    • Scharfinator

Was that an ironic statement with the misspelling of organizational and using the wrong form of incomprehensible?

      • SC Dave

Fuck off… I’m on a phone and was correcting… what did I type?

        It was probably more interesting.

        • Scharfinator

“Please let us not destroy Jordan Howard on a rookie contract through orgizational incomprehensible”

          • SC Dave

            Lol… fuck me

But I know, it’s my own damn fault!”

          • MB30SD

            Easy jimmy

    • Malice Halice

What’s your take on Robert the 3rd? Is he worth attention?

  • MB30SD

Soooooon, um… Did we not even sign Glennon today?!

    • Malice Halice

Hopefully Pace is mindfucking us all

      • MB30SD

        Sure

    • BearDown100393

      Pam having another bad dream.

  • beninnorcal

I work nights and was sleeping the last few hours. What the hell’s going on around here snd wgere’s GP?

    • Scharfinator

GP ragequit because a few ppl got snarky with him because he kept wanting to talk politics. I think he will be back though, the rascal.

Other than that, depending who you ask, the Bears are in a proper rebuild or Halas hall is BURNING.

      • MB30SD

Nah, he’s just done with the bears it wasn’t about will or Dave… He’s frustrated like the rest of us. He texted me, I’m not clairvoyant

        • Scharfinator

Ahh, see, that makes a lot more sense to me. No one understands what’s going to pop out of this dumpster fire next.

          • MB30SD

            Yep.

I will most likely join him if pace has a horrible rest of fa and draft. But I’ll still come grabass with you dickbags

          • Scharfinator

I checked out a bit last season myself. If we’re really doing a rebuild, why is Foxy still here? I do not understand

          • MB30SD

I don’t understand 99% of the shit that’s gone down since the season ended.

I would have started by shitcanning fox and all his guys day after… And you know how I would have rolled this week.

Oh well, wtf do I know

  • willbest

Dion Sims… $18 mil over 3 years with $10 million guaranteed. He has caught 74 NFL passes in 4 years…. And lest you think I am being unkind… He caught a mere 26 on 35 targets last year in 14 games.

    • SC Dave

      A bargain

      • willbest

Is it? Is he the best blocking TE in the game?

  • BuddhaJoe

This has to be some crazy trick to make people not get pissed when they reach for a QB at #3. Before it would’ve been like “WTF ARE YOU DOING ASSHOLE?!”, now it’s gonna be “Thank Jeebus it’s not Glennon”. Of course now there’s no one to throw to anyway, but I didn’t say it was a good plan….

  • burntorangenavyblue

Just saw a pharmaceutical commercial for PBA: PseudoBulbar Affect.

Uncontrollable crying or laughing about things but doesn’t match how you feel.

That sums up Bears fans the past few years and especially tonight!

    • BuddhaJoe

Goddam now I know how my Lions fan friends felt during the dark days. It just became a fucking joke to them

      • MB30SD

We have a new name for it

My 1985 season on DVD is going to get a lot of use in 2017. Skip the broadcast, go straight to the DVD and pretend I’m a kid again.

    A. Embarrassment
    B. Don’t Caaaaaaarrrrrrreeee
    C. A & B

    • chitownproud85

Cutler gone, Glennon gained. Jeffery gone, Wheaton? gained. …

      LOL. Dafuq

  • Captain Obvious

Maybe it’s a long game. 12th dimensional chess, as it were.

Pace gives up AJ in FA to get a compensatory pick in the draft.

Signs Glennon to get cover, make it look like he’s trying to improve the team. Glennon glennons all season long, 2017 Bears end up 4-12, owning a high pick in the 2018 draft. Browns have their QB, as do the 49ers. Jags are much improved. Jets blow goats, but they scoop up Cutler who, before breaking his sternum falling on his 18th strip-sack fumble of the season, nutsacks the Jets to 6 wins. Bears end up with the #5 pick in the draft, behind Cleveland, Buffalo, Colts, and 49ers. Bears get their pick of the prime 2018 QB talent, and take a guy who can actually walk through a zoo without getting tranq-darted because the zookeepers think he’s escaped his habitat.

    • burntorangenavyblue

Not if the shoddy Soldier Field condition don’t spike trap him first.

Or with the trend of sports nowadays and where it could be heading: she?

    • willbest

Glennon’s 18 mil will negate Jeffery’s 14. And he is hopefully not done signing people. It’s a FA out minus FA in sort of thing.

      • Captain Obvious

It’s based on salary? I thought it was based on amount of playing time (like how they give guys extra salary if they play more than than their contract is rated) and contributions… or maybe where a guy on his first contract was drafted.

        • willbest

It’s a bunch of things, but money is a large factor

    The proper epitaph for Cutty:

    http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/jay-cutler-departs-chicago-as-bears-most-underappreciated-misunderstood-qb-ever/

Hopefully we find a guy and he turns out to be wrong.

    • Scharfinator

“What Cutler is leaving behind is the legacy of a quarterback who dedicated his heart and body to a city and sport that never loved him back, because they both failed to understand him.” Probably truer than we know

      • MB30SD

        Oh Jesus Fucking Christmas

        • Scharfinator

All I can say is that Lovie got him concussed like 4 times in a game before he took him out. Guy got his brain scrambled in Chicago

            Aigh

        • Irish Sweetness
