Now, Do It Again.

| December 12th, 2017

The Bears looked like a professional football team Sunday. Well-coached. Brilliantly quarterbacked. Dynamic. Passionate. Tough. Young! From the second Mitch Trubisky was drafted with the second overall pick, 2017 became about building optimism for 2018. That’s life with a rookie quarterback, especially when there are first and second-year players littered across the roster. For the first time this season the future looked beyond bright for this organization. It looked downright special. Because of the quarterback. Because of the kids.

Now they need to do it again.

Detroit is still playing for something. A lot of things, actually. They’re home. They are only a game out of the playoffs. They have a head coach they love, currently resting his tuchus on one of the league’s warmest seats. They need this game. And believe me, they’re going to play like it.

Historically, at least in the history of John Fox’s tenure in Chicago, Saturday afternoon in Detroit is where the Bears would lay an egg. As soon as the slightest bit of optimism creeps into the minds of fans and onto the pages of the daily newspapers, Fox’s Bears no-show. There are a lot of damning statistics when it comes to this head coach but none more damning than his 0-7 record when favored. That means every time Vegas has expected the Fox Bears to perform, they have failed to do so. Every. Time. That’s hard to do.

It’s a long shot for Fox to return to the Bears in 2018. Very long. Hell, the organization would have fired him several weeks ago if there was a viable interim candidate on the current staff. (This seems so odd to me but I’ve been told it’s the case by multiple people.) But questions will be asked by this current staff if Trubisky continues to perform as he has the past two weeks and the Bears win games.

  • If Trubisky delivers another 100+ quarterback rating in Detroit, making it three straight, would the organization really be in a rush to change the offensive system he’s running? Even if a change is made at the head coaching spot, wouldn’t the progress being made by the rookie QB bode well for Dowell Loggains?
  • If Fox somehow manages to motivate the Bears over this final month and wins out, is ownership really going to poo poo a 7-9 finish and perfect December? How can they?

Even if the Bears are going to make wholesale changes on the coaching staff, still the likeliest scenario by far, it remains important for these players, these young players, to start stacking good performances. Players like Adam Shaheen and Eddie Jackson. Tarik Cohen and Cody Whitehair. Flashing skill is fine for a rookie but consistently good performances are what make young players building blocks for an organization’s future.

So do it again, kids. Saturday in Detroit. Knock your rival out of the postseason and fire up a fan base desperate for something to believe in.

This week, we’ll find out how much of last week’s game was on Cincy being bad versus the Bears playing well. Would be sweet to smack the Lions out of Playoffs with a statement game!! Bear Down!

  • TWO weeks in a row? Has Fox ever won 2 in a row with the Bears?

Well, at least we’re not favored, so that’s a positive.

Would like to believe that Ds will no longer jump the gaps because Trub showed he can boot and shoot. Or that they may not be able to stack 8 in the box because Wright killed Cincy, or that Os can’t attack the middle as easily with Jackson, Tre and Callahan back in form…

    But, color me skeptical.

It’s much more likely Fox will revert back to run-run-pass, throw to Sims 10 times and deactivate Wright for Braverman.

    • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

keep mocking BRAVERMAN… if he shows up we win by 30.

    • Big Mike

Wright for Braverman. That’s funny. C’mon Butch, drink a bit of warm stale kool-aid. Whatever change they made for Cincy, I expect will remain in place. Whether it was Fox turning over the keys to Birdcage, or finally having confidence to use more of the playbook, I don’t think we’ll see whatever it was you call they did in so many of their games. What comes first horrible play calling, or the ability to execute well enough to get first downs. If you are only running 3 – 6 plays per series, there are many fewer options. I’m not saying the play calling is horrible, but when you go offsides, lose yards etc on first down and are looking and 2nd and long and 3rd and long, you’re screwed as a play caller.

      • SC Dave

“What comes first horrible play calling, or the ability to execute well enough to get first downs.”

        Execution is everything.

        • Scharfinator

Agree, though proper schemes/playcalling make it easier for the players to execute well.

Hey 4.2 40′ guy, dont block that 400 lb guy, instead run a go route. ETC.

          • SC Dave

No argument there. But you can call a great play (and I promise you Loggains has done it a *bunch* of times this season) only to have it derailed by a false start, illegal use of hands, stupid hold, stupid block in the back, etc. Or some ticky-tack bullshit that seems to have overrun the whole league this year.

Witness Compton’s play that took away Cohen’s TD Sunday, for example.

(Hate to call out Compton in a sense, because he generally kicked ass Sunday, but it was what came to mind…)

          • Big Mike

Compton wants that play back as badly as anyone. When the Bears actually scored on that drive, I knew something was in the water.

BTW, is SC or South Carolina?

          • SC Dave

            Yes, it is for Carolina.

          • Big Mike

You follow the USC or Clemson? I coached AJ Turner. Know his family well.

          • Big Mike

Personnel groupings have to be considered part of game planning. The little fast guy on the big guy could be a scheme breakdown, it could be a game planning issue. Could be the OC not getting the right grouping in, could also be the QB calling an Audible with the wrong personnel.

        • Big Mike

Exactly. Blaming play calling is easy, sometimes warranted. It was warranted this season, but even still it wasn’t so much play calling as it was game planning and execution

        • leftcoastdave

Amen. They needed to know more than each other’s names.

    • SC Dave

This season we won two in a row. It’s getting to three that has not happened.

    • Irish Sweetness

I don’t see how Foxy reverts when everything was just peachy letting MT throw it, and giving JH a chance. Matt Prater might be the difference.

  • chitownproud85

The teeter-totter effect this team has on its fan base is criminal. Youve got multiple people bringing up “winning out” and “9-7” after a single win that broke a five game losing streak. My fiance calls this far and away the “most criminally abusive relationship i have ever witnessed” and i concur. I myself am also onboard, because fuck the Lions, and we are, indeed, winning out. BEAR DOWN, FUCK THE LIONS

    • Big Mike

The reason I love the game is its intensity. Same for being a fan. It’s actually almost worse when you are not competing for the playoffs. You’re looking for glimmers of hope. 4-9 feels dramatically better than 3-10. Don’t talk to me about draft position. We’ve got our QB. The difference between the 5th pick and the 15th pick isn’t worth being 3-13 again. 3 and 13 means not a damn thing worked. 4-0 or 3-1 to end the season says, we’re on our way back. At least to this ol bears fans

  • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

From my inside source at Halas Hall. A drunk or senile Fox was seen wandering/stumbling into an offensive meeting yesterday and could be heard yelling. “RUN, RUN, PASS!!!! I have won games where the QB throws less than 8 times.”

Later in the day he shut down practice early and cleared everyone out of the indoor practice facility so he could practice his fly fishing casting.

  • Big Mike

THIS is exactly what has to happen. 1) a win, 2) A game plan based on attacking the opponent, not one based on fear of mistakes. 3) fewer stupid penalties. In my opinion those penalties were from over eagerness and frustration. The offense has had two games where they ran fewer than 40 plays. They were 3 and out so often the most exercise they got was getting on and off the field.

    • SC Dave

Ha ha ha… love the exercise quip. Sad but true!

  • That Guy

I still remember that asshole Wayne Fontes smoking a cigar and gloating as the Loins backed into the playoffs as the Bears choked away a seaon-ending Monday night game in the 90s.

That single image is why I hate the Loins so much.

    • Juan Stone

And I was thinking it’s because Lions eat Pork. Hee hee

  • That Guy

On his deathbed, Fox’s final words will be:

    “Run, run, pass, punt…”

  • Juan Stone

Was Sunday a head fake? Impossible! Bears 30, Lions 17.

  • Scharfinator

Hah, talk about a head fake, what happened with Miami and NE?

That is Jay in a nutshell. Such a tempting bit of physical skill and flashes that make you think he is elite. Then he throws 5 pics the next week.

    • BearDown100393

NE usually garbage in Miami. Weird

    • Big Mike

Get’s your hopes up, touches the stars. Looks like he belongs with Brady, Rogers, Manning.. slides back to Flacco level, then throws a Caleb Hanie out there for good measure.

      • CanadaBear

You’re not really gonna go on a Cutler jag are ya?

        • Russian Hacked Pacebot 3.0

          Just a quickie

I miss ya when you aren’t around. A little levity goes a long way.

      • Scharfinator

Still on his jock, huh? 😛

      • beninnorcal

I was at that game, sitting behind the endzone where he threw the final pick, intended for Olsen.

      • Irish Sweetness

If Cutty threw a TD instead of that last INT agaisnt SF he was MVP.

I can’t see Jim McMahon on that list …. because he’s a winner.

    • Carlos Pendleton

  • BearDown100393

I expect the Bears to defeat Detroit.

  • SC Dave

“… it remains important for these players, these young players, to start stacking good performances”

In other words, start building a culture of *winning*. Hate to sound like a broken record on this, but it’s all I care about right now.

    • SC Dave

      Wait. I lied.

      That and no injuries.

      • Big Mike

I coined a term prior to the Cincy game. It worked really well and was hilarious. It can be used in context here. “I hope there is no #foxfuckery

          #foxfuckery

      Agreed.

          • Irish Sweetness

            You married twice C-Bear?

          • CanadaBear

Yep. I’m the marrying kind apparently. 21 years the first time. Took a few years off and 16 now.

    • Irish Sweetness

Yeah, happy wanking at work everybody! Remember, it’s their problem, not yours!

  • CanadaBear

Cincy was beat to hell and a lot of guys seemed like they were just collecting a paycheck. Still glad The Beloved throttled them. The Loins should be desperate and come out fighting. The one thing that bodes well is Stafford is pretty well beat up and playing like early Stafford. I’d like nothing more than to see the Bears give those sumbitches a wedgie!

    • TomC

I think back to Stafford carving up the D a few weeks ago despite a healthy Floyd. Hicks and Goldman are going to have to have a monster game, unless you think we’re going to get magic pass rush from Achoo and Roy-Rob and SackDanceMaster and Howard “Things Can Only Get Better Jones.”

      • CanadaBear

Stafford has a hand injury and is pretty beat up. I don’t see the Loins running game going anywhere if Eddie is playing. Stafford was awful last week. The Bears have a chance.

        • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

Stafford was awful last week??? 36/44 for 381 yards about 82% completion. He did have those 2 ints. I did not see the INTs. Were they just bad, lame duck, Favrian type passes that were intercepted?

          • CanadaBear

two brutal picks and TB was TB. The Loins were very lucky to get the W

  • leftcoastdave

Say what you will, Fox looks like he has developed a rookie QB and built him for the NFL. Think about the first few games of the season. How many of the losses can be blamed directly on a Glennon pick six? By way of contrast, how many losses can be directly blamed on MT?
Yup, he was harnessed. But he also was unable to read the Ds early in the season. He himself acknowledge his footwork caused errant passes in weeks past.
One of the sports writers (or was it a talking head on TV?) commented Sunday about Mitchell calling out the Mike pre-snap. Nice, and necessary for success.

Now TK (aka “The Kid”) has his head held high and will be a winner for years to come.

    • Scharfinator

Man those are some revisionist rose colored glasses you’ve got. Where can I get a pair?

      • CanadaBear

        That’s LCD’s MO.

        • leftcoastdave

Yup. When Glennon proved to come up a bust, what was left of the season? Play Sanchez or play the Rookie who was not ready for the NFL? The team decided to play the Rookie, but bring him along step by step. Remember the targets he had? Nada. It’s called making the best of a bad situation and not setting TK up for failure with forced passes. It is clear that they have done the same with Shaheen who also was not ready to make the huge jump. First learn to block and your blocking assignments which change at the line. Next start to run routes. It is happening. Cohen? Also evolving and being learned up to new skills.

The losses hurt, but the future’s so bright, I got to wear rose colored shades.

          • CanadaBear

            Glory in your spunk!

          • SC Dave

Unless you think the Bears could have contended for the playoffs, the plan with MT was fine.

I was wrong because I thought Glennon might actually be serviceable. But he wasn’t. Lile Jeff said all along.

But Glennon sucking was not reason to start MT week 1, and I’m glad Fox didn’t

          • Irish Sweetness

For ‘step by step’ read ‘placed him in an impossible situation’ caused by run-run-pass.

      • Bear Instincts

can you get me a pair as well? thanks

      • Big Mike

It’s just a perspective. If Trubisky trends well at the end of the year, what can you say?

        • Dis Guy Trublinsky

I’d say good for him. There has to be a better option moving forward than Fox.

          • Big Mike

I think the Bears need to move on from Fox. But we can’t say unequivocally that he didn’t know how to develop a rookie QB. Maybe keeping him on the sideline for his rookie year would have been a better move. But Glennon just broke that plan.

          • SC Dave

            Definitely broke that plan.

        • Irish Sweetness

That he’s a good QB, which had nothing to do with Fox – who, far from developing the kid, tried to ruin him.

          • Big Mike

The point that is being made is that he is getting better as the season progresses. There’s a lot that happens that doesn’t show up in games. If you criticize a coaching staff for a players lack of developmental progress, you need to compliment the staff when a player does develop. If you say it’s just because of the athlete’s talent and hard work, you have to apply that equally when they don’t play well.

      • Big Mike

It’s just a perspective. If Trubisky trends well at the end of the year, what can you say?

    • BearDown100393

      No.
      No.
      No.

      • willbest

Its obvious to everybody that Mitch Trubisky learns more each week watching visiting OC/QB’s work than from his own staff.

so what you are saying is that he is Rogue from the xmen. a mutant who can steal your powers with just a touch. except MT10 does it just by playing a game against you.

there’s a reason he doesn’t wear gloves when he plays…

“Build a plane where every seat has an assigned overhead compartment. Problem solved.” – Jeff

So you want them to take the space they have now, and slap dividers in them reducing the amount of space available to each passenger? What about group travelers that would like a single larger bag but now have an unmovable divider? Then there is the issue with not all overhead compartments and carry on bags being of uniform size/shape across the industry.

Or did you simply want them to remove 20% of the seats and raise ticket prices 35-40%?

I know spirit and the like get a bad wrap for the pay for everything approach, but personally I don’t see a problem with it, as long as they are upfront with their pricing structure.

  • CanadaBear

You know you’re bad when …

After looking around a bit the last day or so, other than in Chicago, it’s like MT’s game didn’t happen. I get it’s one game and he’s been pretty underwhelming up til now but you would think some national media might mention it in passing. Esp since it’s happening in one of the largest media markets in the NFL. I’ve seen numerous articles about Hundley keeping the seat warm for Erin (even though two of those wins were gifted to them by Cle and Chi) and that’s the smallest media market in the NFL (by a lot).

    • willbest

I don’t recall a lot of media around Goff last year.

The NFL has shown the blueprint for dealing with Kizer …. and Fangio might just ignore it.

Well the whole situation seemed specifically engineered to avoid bad press, which I guess turns out to mean that nobody bothers to watch. Jeff said it a while back. The Bears are boring.

          • CanadaBear

I agree but were talking about one of the most popular NFL franchises.

      • AlbertInTucson

        I do.

It was all about how terrible he looked.

        • BearDown100393

          He was terrible.

          • AlbertInTucson

Turns out a lot of that was Jeff Fisher and his OC.

        • willbest

For about 2 weeks and then they found something else, and we never heard about it again at the national level.

        • Irish Sweetness

His line improved, he didn’t. Jared Goff will be Jared Goff for some time. Nothing to see there.

    • No one pays attention to losers.

Ironically, the only ones even looking at Trub game film are FF experts (in order to project his dynasty value), scouts (to see if their grades were accurate) and gamblers.

Oh, and whatever masochists Bears fans are still taking the time to watch them this yr.

      • CanadaBear

I thought the national media covered every team. Silly me.

        • You think those talking heads actually watch film?
Doubt it. They’re too busy appearing on every tv, radio, podcast, blog, vlog, twitter…to do actual work.

The only guys I know for sure who watch EVERY game are some FF analysts because their job depends on it and they’re border line employed.

Gotta hand it to them though. Watching EVERY game after the Sunday Night game (12pm Eastern) to have a show ready monday morning is pretty hard core.

Some of them break it up into two days.

That’s why I tend to trust their judgements when it comes to players, schemes and trends more than the general talking head yapping on tv saying stupid shit for ratings.

    • AlbertInTucson

And the Giants, of course, are covered as if they were a contender.

    • Irish Sweetness

I don’t know C-Bear. We beat a bad team that was beat up. I can understand the rest of the league not creaming themselves over the Bears winning a game.

I make it a point to label my sarcasm.

The concept is lost on many.

          • Juan Stone

I guess I should do the same with my bad jokes.

          • Never know with Will.

      • Bear Instincts

when a Long Snapper/FG holder is being game planned for and they can change the nature of a game every week then they can get into the HoF

      • BerwynBomber

You jest, of course, but right not there are “only” three sure fire HoF QBs playing: Brady, Brees and Rodgers.

R-berger, Rivers and yes even Eli have a shot but none will be first ballot even if they get in.

Wilson is tracking toward it but still too early to say.

        • Wilson will get there, no doubt.

He’s singlehandlely dragging that O to the playoffs.

Talk about MVP, if he goes down, the Seahawks become us.

          • BerwynBomber

Probably. But if they hit a soft spot of their schedule as the Cheese did, they might be able to tread water for a half-dozen games with a back-up.

          • SC Dave

You mean because they lost as many starters as we did?

        • willbest

Don’t forget Peyton, he ain’t in yet. But yeah, its just more a comment that bubble QB’s always seem to get the benefit of the doubt. Probably because its easiest to judge the impact of a QB.

          • BerwynBomber

Well, I was only counting guys still active.

Hell, I thought Wentz had the look of one (even though super early in his career) but who knows what he’ll be like on a bum knee or what his durability will be given his recklessness.

And agreed about QBs. Plus, we are living in QB-centric era.

          • SC Dave

It’s way too easy for QBs to run up “HoF numbers” now.

          • BerwynBomber

Yes and no. #s are continually on the rise QB-wise. But that also means there is a higher standard w/in the era in regard to said #s.

So you are still going to end up with the best — i.e., HoF players when you are talking careers.

          • Irish Sweetness

Peyton should sit long and hard. Is Canton a place for chokers?

Rivers is good, but I don’t see how he’s HOF. Canton is not for the good.

Big Ben has the toilet thing to overcome. Owens has been denied for less.

If Eli gets in then it would be an SNL sketch. Only way that happens.

      • Irish Sweetness

        4 or 5 QBs … or 45 ??

        • willbest

          It was hyperbole.

    • SC Dave

Brian Mitchell is #2 all time in all purpose yards, topped only by Jerry Rice.

      I can’t imagine he’s ever been considered.

    • Irish Sweetness

And 2 and 3 if you’re a receiver. But no Moss or Owens….

  • CanadaBear

The other day when Jeff was beating the drum for Jordan Howard he talked about him getting 1000 yds rushing in each of his first two years. Saying no other Bear had ever done that. All true. The inference was how great Jordan is. I think the world of Jordan but comparing him to the guy in my avatar is foolish. Let this one sink in. Gale scored 36 TD’s in his first two years in the league (28 games). All the old guys on here will back me up, until he got injured he was in a class by himself.

    • AlbertInTucson

      “Old Guy” ?

Did I just hear my name called?

      Those were 14 game seasons.

The first season was on a total of 222 touches.

Wider hash marks on the field, too.

      • CanadaBear

Just incredible. Both of us were in our early teens. The only consolation for a Bears fan back then was Butkus, Sayers and the opponents record the following week after playing the Bears.

        • AlbertInTucson

They were in the hunt in ’65.

Also in ’68, despite needing 3 different QBs to start multiple games and losing Gale in Game 8.

None of the QBs, Jack Concannon (7 starts), Virgil ‘Chicken Bleep” Carter(5) nor Larry Rakestraw (2) completed 50% of their passes.

Concannon finished the season playing in a shoulder brace because of a busted collarbone.

          • CanadaBear

Nothing new. QB’s sucked! I was so passionate about the Bears back then.

          • SC Dave

The story of forever… Bears QBs at best mediocre.

And to think these younger fans mistake our skepticism for dissing on MT.

They cannot POSSIBLY understand how much we would love to FINALLY see a star.

Can you IMAGINE if Trubisky ends up as good as Rodgers?

Frankly, I would think I had died or something.

    • evantonio
      • CanadaBear

He was magical in the mud. 6 TD’s in one game and they took him out before it was over.

        • SC Dave

Second most points in a game, I think. Ernie Nevers had 6 TD too, but kicked 4 extra ppints to go with it.

    • BearDown100393

I’m not one for arguing “who’s better” from different era.

      Sayers was great.
      Payton was great.

Stats provide a measuring stick but variables such as games/season, quality of opponent play, rule changes, blah blah blah also need to compute.

      • CanadaBear

I always say so and so is my favorite or something like that. I thought Gale before he got hurt was the greatest RB for the Bears. Of course, that was a really short time. Walter wasn’t far behind and then when you throw in his longevity, blocking, receiving, passing and leadership (taking nothing away from Gale because he was a willing blocker, great receiver and could pass) no doubt Walter is the Bears greatest RB. Walter’s leadership was huge.

        • BerwynBomber

It’s a shame medicine (as well as training and diets) was so far behind in regard to knee injuries those days.

Both Sayers and Butkus could have had much longer careers.

        • SC Dave

Sayers was better, but yes, didn’t have the duration.

Blew up too early, just like the actual Greatest Bear I Ever Saw.

          #51 GOAT

    • It’s obvious from watching game tape that Walter and Sayers are in the top tier.

Walter perhaps being the greatest football player of all time, so kinda unfair to judge Jordan to that.

      I like Howard but I still think he’s a B-type RB.

He doesn’t even really stack up to the RBs of THIS yr.

I’d take Bell, Zeke, Gurley, Gordon, Fournette, over Howard.

And a strong case can be made for Cook, Hunt, and Kamara going forward.

2 down HBs aren’t that rare. Heck, the puke seemed to have found one in Jamal Williams.

      • CanadaBear

Don’t rule out Howard working on his receiving skills this off season and becoming a 3-down back. Not saying it will happen but Howard really wants to be great.

I think you’re selling Howard way short with some of those comparisons.

        • BerwynBomber

He could. But don’t you think he worked on his receiving skills this past off-seasons as well?

It’s kinda like the Kyle Schwarber thing. He can probably work on his outfielding skills his entire career and his ceiling will be below average OF.

At least that could be the counter-argument to the idea that JH will morph into an excellent receiver in the off-season. The “just not natural to him” notion.

          • Yeah. Remember Howard fixed his eyes .
That was the reason for his poor eye-hand coordination.

            Nope.

Maybe he can get hand transplants next off-season.

And knew legs in 2020 to run crisp routes.

            Robo-How

          • SC Dave

No… leave the legs alone. Absolutely nothing wrong with them.

Could he use more speed? So could any player in the history of the NFL.

But the way Jordan Howard routinely turns plays that Zeke, Larry and the rest get 5 yards into 16 yard plays is a fucking joy to watch.

Since he came up, Howard has more 10+ yard runs than anyone. Sure, Fournette and Zeke get their 80 yard runs when Howard gets caught after 55 yards.

But we have Tarik for that crazy shit. When he can stay in bounds

          • Irish Sweetness

True, but he’ll never take one to the house. He’s broken runs where he was clear, and he just runs out of juice. If you’re gig is as a pure runner … you’d better be able to run. There are huge gaps in his talent bag.

          • CanadaBear

He doesn’t run out of juice. The DB’s are faster and have the angle.

          • SC Dave

The first pass of the game Sunday was high and behind him. Catchable for sure, but a much worse throw than catch attempt.

And if MT said otherwise (which I now know he wouldn’t) I’d have no confidence in him.

          • CanadaBear

I’m just looking for him to improve to the point they can leave him in for 3 downs. Not that he would be great but ignore him at your peril type.

        • SC Dave

I do too. Jordan Howard is very good. And when our QBs throw the ball in the right place more consistently, I think he will catch them more consistently.

The drop vs Atlanta is a perfect example of guys that have not played enough together.

Howard should have realized by his third step that he was so open that he should expect the ball on the end zone side of his body, just as Glennon should have seen it a step earlier.

That ball throw to, and looked for, over the right (upfield) shoulder, two steps earlier is a trivially easy TD.

          • Irish Sweetness

He’s a grown ass man, Dave. You know when you’re young if you can catch a ball or not. He just either takes his eyes off the ball and he hears footsteps … or … well, it doesn’t really matter. Catching the ball is not his bag, and in the NFL you have to catch the ball, all the top backs do.

Kamara’s a guy that was drafted to do what he does. It appears JH is designed to get up to 20-25 yards, then stop. He is not a receiver, and that’s being kind.

We draft Saquon, and it’s not a problem. Extends Jordan’s career.

      • Dis Guy Trublinsky

        https://www.pro-football-reference.com/years/2016/rushing.htm

Jordan Howard has more rushing yards than Bell since coming into the league. If you care to factor in that he didn’t start the first four games of last season, it’s even more skewed.

He averaged 5.2 yards per carry last year as a rook to Bell’s 4.9. He averaged 10.3 yards per reception to Bell’s 8.2.

Bell played in an offense supported by Ben Raperberger with AB catching balls. Howard? Not so much.

The Steelers throw the ball at Bell a lot more than the Bears throw it at Howard. So Bell has more receiving yards. But you can’t ignore a season’s worth of stats and just say Bell is an A, and Howard is a B, when Howard moves the ball farther up the field with each touch in what has been a piss poor offense with a piss poor coach.

You and I will never agree on this.

        • BerwynBomber

Bell had 75 receptions in 12 games last year. Howard had 29 in 15 games. Basically, Bell was on pace for 100 catches, which is insane.

Also, Howard’s catch percentage rate was 58%, which is one of the worst in the league. Bell’s is a very respectable 80%.

As dual threat RBs, there is no comparison between the two.

          • Dis Guy Trublinsky

Howard’s catch percentage is admittedly problematic.

But what happens if they trade places? Nobody knows.

I just can’t ignore the fact that every time Howard touches the football, he’s averaging more yards than Bell, despite consistently stacked boxes, and largely poor quarterback and receiver play until very recently.

And for what it’s worth, I think Bell is great. I just disagree that Howard is a B

          • Would you consider Alfred Morris a “B” RB?

Because I would argue that Howard is a SLIGHTLY better version of Alf.

Just compare their first two seasons so far

            Alf

            http://www.nfl.com/player/alfredmorris/2533457/careerstats

            Howard

            http://www.nfl.com/player/jordanhoward/2555418/careerstats

Obviously I’m hoping Howard becomes more than what Alf has become (a backup), but like I said, 2 down backs tend to wash out in the NFL even if they’re good because they limit the O.

          • Irish Sweetness

If they trade places then Howard comes out on 3rd down. He has to.

What does intrigue me is the 3rd and 1 thing. He’s designed to get you a yard. He was put on Earth … to get you a yard. And time and again when we need a yard, especially on the goal line .. .we’ll pass it. Inexplicable.

          • BerwynBomber

I love Howard. I just don’t think he’s in Bell’s league as an all-around RB.

        • Steelers throw more to Bell because he can CATCH.
He can run routes. He lines up in the slot. That’s a huge mismatch for LBs.

Bell doesn’t come out during the two minute drill, or when the Steelers are playing from behind.

That’s kind of important, right – being on the field when it matters most.

Bell can also break long TDs as opposed to running 30 yds then being caught from behind.

One can also argue that the Bears have had a superior Oline.

There are some counters like the Steelers playing with better weapons, but just look at them play.

Bell is the best RB this yr, and I don’t think it’s even close.

I like Howard but he’s not at his level.

The biggest drawback I see in Bell is that he might be inj-prone – but INJs with HBs are always a lil fluky (Howard himself has been playing with a bum shoulder for much of the season)

    • Irish Sweetness

1000 yards rushing for your first two years is 60 ypg. That’s just hardly worth mentioning, regardless of it not happening before. Walter had 13 TDs his second season and then over 2000 yards from scrimmage the next year.

JH would have had a much better year numbers-wise if MT had been let off the leash from the start instead of all that run-run-pass weirdness.

  • Happy Bday, Glennon!

    Here’s $16M for holding a clipboard.

    • AlbertInTucson

Nice work, if you can get it.

      • If I had a son, I’d get him into Soccer and have him practice FGs like every day.

We might make fun of them, but kicking a ball and getting paid millions for it has to be the life.

Better than waking up at 5AM for some BS job that jusssst covers expenses….

        • AlbertInTucson

And if you’re good, not even great, you can go forever.

Like a left-handed reliever in Baseball.

          • AlbertInTucson

            Or a knuckleballer.

        • Irish Sweetness

Yah. I was just thinking about that. Artists and sports-stars must think we’re all losers. Doing whatever job just to cover expenses. Follow that dream! Like Walter said: Never give up, never give in, never die easy.

    • BearDown100393

      Giraffe jerseys on liquidation yet?

      • As crazy as it sounds, Glennon might not even be the most expensive Pace mistake this yr.

Wheaton was handed an $11M contract.

        he’s caught one ball.

So essentially, he’s earning $11M per catch.

        Great job, Pace!

        • willbest

It was 2-years 11 mil with $6 mil guaranteed. So he will make $6 million for 1 catch.

          • No guarantee Pace cuts him.

            But let’s say he does.

$6M (plus whatever bonuses and dead cap) + $16M Glennon + $13.5M Demps + Cooper, Barth (and arguably Sims)…

That’s a lot of $ for little to no production.

          • willbest

$6 mil includes the signing bonus prorated to next year. In that sense he was only plaid $5.25 mil to be a bear this year.

          • CanadaBear

And you know he’s not coming back to collect year 2. Pace really has some head scratchers on his resume. If MT pans out we have to hope Pace gets better at FA. If he ever gets the core where he wants it (through the draft) I’m hoping he starts shopping for more expensive trinkets. There should be lots of money for next year after they cut the dead wood.

          • SC Dave

            Sims has flashed tho!

    • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

he started 4 games which comes out to roughly $1mill per game so he is being paid $12 mill for holding a clipboard.

    • Irish Sweetness

He won the game of life.

  • Tortured Bear fan

“wouldn’t the progress being made by the rookie QB bode well for Dowell Loggains?” It has to bode extremely well if Dowell “the Towel” wants to make a case to keep his job, but it’s still a long shot if a new HC is coming.

    • This is another reason to fire Fox.

We honestly don’t know where he ends and Loggains begins.

It’s hard for me to believe an OC wanted to run such a limited playbook, esp considering last yrs playcalling.

Oh well. Birdcage gonna go down with the captain, I guess.

He’ll be lucky to get a QB coaching job.

      • willbest

He got the most out of Barkley until the NFL D’s figured him out, and made Hoyer look better than a backup. I think if Trubisky performs in and around as well as he did sunday the next 3 games, Loggains will be on the short list for OC in the 5-8 openings this season.

        • If Trub starts tearing it up, then maybe.
But other than that, I would doubt it.

Gase who knew him well had a chance to take him along, but he didn’t.

That tells me Birdcage is not highly regarded.

          • willbest

            QB’s Loggains has playcalled for
            1) Cutler
            2) Hoyer
            3) Barkley
            4) Glennon
            5) Locker
            6) Fitzpatrick
            7) Trubisky

          • Yeah, he’s been somewhat handicapped (Fox as HC doesn’t help), but the NFL doesn’t care for excuses.

They won’t give him the benefit of the doubt until he produces points.

Until then, QB coach it will be.

      • Tortured Bear fan

IDK his grade of responsibility running the offensive since Fox assumed the Piñata role about team’s performance. But he is auctioning for his next job elsewhere surely.

        • He might be auditioning, but Loggains can’t go rogue either.

If Fox tells him, “I want a run heavy attack vs Team-X”, Loggains has to install that gameplan even if he knows it sucks.

He can’t flip him off ala Cutty/McMahon.

    • BearDown100393

      No.

      Get rid of him also.

“DaBearsBlog @dabearsblog Build a plane where every seat has an assigned overhead compartment. Problem solved.”

Excellent. My other recommendation is that all coach seats are fixed and do not offer any reclining capabilities.

    • I think their should be a section just for passengers with kids.

They should be segregated from the general population.

Nothing worse than a kid kicking the back of you seat or a child crying for 3 hours straight.

      Quarantine them all!

      • willbest

I would rather that than an obese person oozing into my space.

        • Don’t fatsos have to pay for 2 seats now or something?

I think some airline company made Kevin Smith pay for two seats or something a while back.

But if not, fatsos also segregated – maybe with the parents and children.

          Should even out, right?

5 yr old kid won’t need as much space next to a fatty.

My best friend out here is 6’8″ and somewhere north of 4 bills. Yes he’s way overweight but he’s also a butcher so there is some muscle and strength. Any time we’ve had trouble at a show we were promoting, it didn’t last long. I can only imagine how difficult life is at that size. We always give each other a hug coming and going. People always just laugh. Again, I’m 5’2″.

          • That is a BIG man.

Two biggest friends I have are about 6’4.

            Former marine now bouncer.

My Texas cousins were pretty big though not that I think about it. 6’7. Played Oline for some university. The “smaller” one was 6’5 and amateur body builder. He also became a bouncer for a bit.

though he always told me that drunk idiots would always try to challenge him. I was like, “they must be nuts!”

          • CanadaBear

Back in my early 20’s my best friend growing up was a power lifter. He was 6’5″ and his weight went from 250-300 depending on his cycle. He stopped going into bars due to people always picking fights with him. Besides being that size, he didn’t really mind kicking someone’s ass if they insisted. I told a few guys to stay down and not get up or the beat down would continue. Most didn’t listen. Always blew my mind.

This will seem a shameless brag, but I wanted to share something. My connection to the game of football besides the Bears is coaching youth football. I’ve been on the coaching staff of a team that sent a QB to the NFL. (turns out he’s not a great or even good NFL QB that is on the roster of the Bears). But over the weekend, A young man I coached when he was 10 and again when he was 14, Quarterbacked his team to an undefeated 15-0 Virginia 6a (biggest schools in Virginia), state championship. He did this as a Sophomore. It’s on my mind right now, because this 16 year old took the time out of his day to call me today and say thanks. He sent me these two clips. 1 is a TD pass he threw as a 10 year old on a team I coached. The other a pass he threw Saturday to the same receiver in the state championship game.

I’ve coached that age group 4 times. The 3 years I did not have this young man, we passed maybe 2-3x per game. Typical youth game you run about 35 plays. We spent all of our time learning how to block. Single Wing, Wishbone, I formation. Started out the season with this player doing the same thing. Noticed in the first week that he was very different. Put in a “pistol” offense (a nice hybrid between the shotgun and being under center). We passed 10-15 times a game. Runner up in the metro area 9-1.

    • BerwynBomber

Nice, compact release on that state champ pass. And impressive as hell just to start as sophomore let alone at QB and let alone for a state champ-winning team.

      Congrats.

      • Big Mike

Having a sophomore start at QB in our region is unheard of. Most fans couldn’t believe it when he won the job. But this kid is different. He works with his own QB Coach, because the HS coaches have run out of things they can teach him. He played on USA Football’s national team when he was 14 and 15.

        • BerwynBomber

            Gotta get drafted

          • SC Dave

Yeah, no official farm system in football.

Lets start one… colleges feed NFL. We get Alabama, Clemson, Boise State, Central Florida, and East Carolina.

          • Big Mike

Wouldn’t that be something. Although I can tell you after watching Mike Glennon get beat up, its tough being a former coach, friend of a guy who gets to the NFL and isn’t good enough to succeed. Mike does have $50 million or so to comfort him.

    • bigrobstunner

Are you from VA Big Mike? I went to and played at Stafford HS in late the 90’s.They sadly lost in the playoffs to the Tuscarora Huskies by a last minute field goal last week. Great to see local talent doing well!

      • Big Mike

Yes. Tuscarora is in division 5. Tuscarora took out a powerhouse when they beat Stone Bridge in the quarter finals. Stafford had them on the ropes. Here’s the playoff bracket for 5a http://www.maxpreps.com/tournament/PIbVvKSAEeeT-Oz0u-e-FA/PIbW9aSAEeeT-Oz0u-e-FA/football-fall-17/2017-virginia-high-school-football-playoff-brackets–vhsl–group-5a.htm. I’ve been associated with what used to be called the Concord District. Centreville, Chantilly, Westfield, Oakton, Madison etc. It’s one of the toughest divisions you’ll ever see. Runner up or state champs 7 of the last 10 years or something like that. How did a Stafford, VA guy get to be a Bears fan?

        • bigrobstunner

When is was a kiddo we were in the Commonwealth district and I think we were just 3A back then. Although Football has come a long way in the state. I can thank Walter Payton and the early 80’s Bears for my fandom I’m VA. Was an impressionable young boy and fell in love. You?

          • Big Mike

Born and raised on the NW side of Chicago.

    • Dis Guy Trublinsky

That’s excellent Mike. While I can’t relate to your work with an athlete like that, I’ve coached sixteen seasons of youth sports now; Baseball, Boys and Girls Lacrosse, Basketball, Football and Soccer.

There is nothing I’ve found more rewarding.

      • Big Mike

I did not know you were a coach. That’s fantastic. I’ve coached baseball and basketball in house leagues. I’ve had the opportunity to coach some exceptional players. This guy might be the best of all of them. He is ahead of where Mike Glennon was at the same stage of his career. Say what we will about Glennon, he’s been paid nearly $50 million to play football.

So Tom Brady launched his quack TB12 wellness app. Apparently the Jay Cutler “Malboro and PBR Path to Greatness” failed to snag any startup capital.

    • BerwynBomber

Is Jay a hipster-drinking PBR man?

      • willbest

        Unlikely. Owing to the diabetes

        • Diabetics can still drink.
          They just can’t pound.

          • CanadaBear

Depends how bad they have it. A severe diabetic can’t drink unless they want to die.

          • Hmm. Maybe. My best friend has the worst type. He almost went blind not knowing he even had it for years.

But he’ll still drink Michelob Ultra, but maybe like 1 or 3 over a few hours.

He’ll even take a tequila shot or two, but he just doesn’t go nuts.

He will however blaze it like he was in a rap vid lol

          • CanadaBear

I was on jury duty years ago and the judge asked if there was anyone there that should be excused. A young lady asked to be excused due to diabetes. The judge got kind of indignant and snippy and said diabetics serve on juries all the time. They will make it work. He asked her when does she inject? When she gave him four different times/day she needs to inject, the judge looked at her sheepishly and dismissed her.

          • willbest

  • SC Dave

Just thinking about a dream scenario for Sunday….

Rodgers returns, but Peppers gets two strip sacks, a pick 6, and Carolina wins 56-3

    • Dream scenario is Peppers breaks his other collar.

Oops, did I say that aloud?

      • SC Dave

        You did.

        But only after humiliating him.

Don’t know if you’ve watched much Panthers, but Julius is bringing it.

        Bringing it.

And I can imagine the long term Panther fan view. For me, it would be like Matt coming back and putting up a couple of 1700+ yards from scrimmage seasons on the way out.

      • willbest

Peppers is a merc. Its hard for me to be upset about him.

Subtract 6 losses from his current record.

      • Irish Sweetness

        -2 ?

    • He’s only been favored in 7 games.
Which is probably more depressing than his record in said games.

      • willbest

No being 0-7 is worse than only being favored in 15% of your matches.

    • Dis Guy Trublinsky

      It’s excellent.

Never furious, Will. Focused. Determined. Committed.

In fact I’m thinking of a weekly column :

Irish’s Deep Thoughts while trying to rub one out.

Yesterday I killed my buzz thinking about crypto-currencies. I defy anyone to rub one out to thoughts of Euthereum. Most of my Bears’ insights come to me during a failure to launch, and for some reason, tech-related ideas.

I didn’t say it would be pretty.

    • EnderWiggin

Didn’t Cutty throw a couple in the game he helicopter’d into the end zone?

      • AlbertInTucson

        “Rookie” QB.

      • BerwynBomber

        Key word … rookie …

    • Irish Sweetness

Or Walter? I’ll bet Walter did it after Jim.

Maybe Jim was the first to throw and catch a TD in the same game?

  • AlbertInTucson

    The Patriots claim Kenny Britt?

After that scintillating performance by Brandon Cooks?

  • willbest

Could somebody explain to me why the Jedi/Team Leia are part of the resistance in the prequel sequel rebooted remake? They clear out the Empire and they can’t even keep a functional government running for a single generation without getting kicked to the curb? I mean do they really deserve a second chance after that shit showing?

    • AlbertInTucson

That franchise jumped the shark in Return Of The Jedi.

      • willbest

Return of the Jedi taking place on the Wookie homeworld would have been so much better than carebear forest.

        • AlbertInTucson

It was like watching a Muppet Movie.

          • CanadaBear

You say that like it’s a bad thing!

        • Irish Sweetness

Oh it’s Disney … you’ll be getting all the Kashyyk movies you want real soon.

      • Irish Sweetness

How so? There was no shark jumping whatsoever in that movie.

    • Dis Guy Trublinsky

I can’t believe anybody still pays to watch that shit. I tried to watch one of the newer ones a summer or two ago. It was my first since the original 3. It was brutal. Like an unimaginative remake of one of the early ones. Not for me.

      • willbest

I catch them eventually, but I just read a review about how Carrie Fisher stole the show in the one that is about to come out. I have no idea if that is true, it just triggered my problem with them literally doing the same story over and over again.

        • Dis Guy Trublinsky

You’ve got more insight than I have there. But that, by far, was my biggest problem with the one I saw. Felt no different than the 35 +/- year old model.

        • Pretty Boy Assassin

The Force Awakens would be a great film had they just come up with a different schtick than the Death Star. Fucking stupid.

Other than that, the characters are great and the acting is incredible for a Star Wars flick. Disney wanted a softball to hit out of the park, and they got it…redo A New Hope.

          • Irish Sweetness

I didn’t like it, and I’ve been a fan since 1977. JJ Abrams missed the boat on that one. How they let the maker of Super 8 and helmer of Star Trek movies take over I’ll never know .. .and then he remakes ANH ??

I hear VIII is better because of Johnson … but that it lags with the Finn/Rose love thing which apparently takes up 30 total minutes of screen time.

          • Pretty Boy Assassin

Compared to 1-3, 7 is a cinematic masterpiece. How you fuck up Darth Vader becoming Darth Vader is a mystery…oh, no it isn’t. The way you do that is that you don’t take advice from a damn person and don’t do self scouting. Fucking Lucas. You suck at writing dialogue and directing. So what does he do? Writes all the dialogue and directs. And doesn’t let anyone at his story.

I’m hoping this one kicks ass. Like Empire Strikes Back kicks ass. ANH is great. ESB is the greatest film of the series, and a top 10 film of all time. And George had literally nothing to do with it during filming.

          • Irish Sweetness

I give Lucas a pass. Anyone who sides with the psychotic fans of The People Vs George Lucas needs to re-evaluate. The movies were George’s, and if he wanted to touch anything up, who’s to say anything? He gave us 6 great stories, there were 3 more, and Disney threw them in the bin, inexplicably remaking Ep IV: ANH and calling it Ep VII (for the girls?)

He sold SW thinking there was no way they’d ditch his treatments for Episodes 7-9.

      • Irish Sweetness

TFA was a remake of ANH and I don’t care what anyone says. It’s all there.

Rogue One was probably the best SW movie I’ve seen. There was more SW in that movie than any of the saga.

But go easy on the rebels …. after all …order 66. Jedi no existe.

    • Pretty Boy Assassin

I got this. I won’t speak to the quality of The Force Awakens, just what’s happened.

The thing to remember is that this is 30 years after ROTJ. So there is a lot that has happened since. Leia was in the government that was set up, which was called the “New Republic”. But like the Old Republic of the prequels, the NR suffers from crippling bureaucracy, corruption, and just being too big to govern (thousands of SYSTEMS…not planets…trillions of beings). They struggle to raise more of an army to take on the Empire and struggle to bring the forces they have to finish off the Empire at Jakku 1 year after ROTJ. And they never finish off the Empire. Remnants escape to the outer reaches of the outer rim, rebuild, and start conquering their way back. Furthermore, there are still citizens in the NR that are sympathetic to the Empire. Those who favor Order vs. Chaos (if you’re an Imp) or Freedom vs Tyranny (if you’re a Rebel).

So even when the Empire returns as the First Order, the NR is paralyzed and can’t muster forces to bear against them, partly because of the bureaucracy, and partly because some of the citizens in NR Senate decide that the First Order shouldn’t be attacked by the NR. So the First Order strikes first with Starkiller base (sniggers…stupid). So Leia, being a person of action, doesn’t wait for the NR to bring an army against the First Order because she doesn’t trust the NR to do it. So she raises her own vigilante force called the “Resistance”.
