Funny feeling we give the win-less Browns a win.

TB, CLE and SF to win … gives us a square shot at Barkley.

MAYBE THERE IS SOME HOPE FOR THE BEARS. the aikman efficiency ratings may show so. The Aikman Ratings measure seven different categories of performance on both Offense and Defense. Devised by Troy Aikman in 2005 and compiled by STATS LLC, they provide a better measure of the qualities that win football games than simply total yards gained, the method used by the NFL to rank offenses and defenses. Originally designed where a score of 75 would be the average on both Offense and Defense, the swing towards Offense since has made a score above 80 the mean on that side of the ball while 70 has been an average Defense in recent years.
The seven categories are Offensive Points (20%), Red-Zone Efficiency as measured by Points Per Red-Zone Possession (20%), Turnovers (20%), Yards per Rush (10%), Yards per Pass (10%), Third-Down Percentage (10%) and First Downs (10%).

these ratings, to me, make more more sense than the NFL method of rating which is simply yards allowed on defense and yards gained on offense. not very insightful.

these ratings make much more sense to me than the NFL front office method of yards allowed on defense and yards gained on offense. their ratings are easy, but not very insightful. ”We would note for fans of teams near the bottom of the current Aikman Ratings that things can change quickly in the NFL.
The Jaguars, now in 1st, were 26th in the final 2016 Aikman Ratings.
The Rams, now 6th, were 32nd and last in the final 2016 Aikman Ratings.
The Vikings, now 3rd, were 23rd in the final 2016 Aikman Ratings. ”———- aikman efficiency ratings. the ratings for the bears are currently 6th on defense and 24th on offense and 17th in total. they do not rate the special teams. what’s currently missing for the bears? perhaps what the jaguars, rams, and vikings acquired in making the improvements noted above – the right coaches and acquisition of playmakers. i see the bears quite lacking in both. not going to discuss ownership (it won’t change) and the GM much here. so, there is a lot to do. fangio is likely leaving according to reports. but, with a new coach, playmakers on the edge and secondary, and some time to adjust to new schemes perhaps the defense can become dominant in 1-2 years. so much work to do on offense, coaches and playmakers. and, will kyle long ever be able to be the player he once was? pace has drafted fairly well, but quite done quite poorly in free agency, which cannot continue. my right coach – dave toub and a hell of an offensive coordinator…

    The latest on the roster.

The Bears placed safety Chris Prosinski (concussion) on injured reserve
and signed OL Brandon Greene to the active roster off the practice
squad. The Bears need another healthy offensive lineman with Josh Sitton
(doubtful/ankle) and Tom Compton (questionable/concussion) both dealing
with injuries. Chicago (4-10) plays winless Cleveland at Soldier Field
    on Sunday.

  • CanadaBear

Picking up an OLmen from the practice squad for this game tells me one thing. The Bears are going to lose a couple of OL men today. It’s snowing at Soldier Field. You just know this is going to turn into the Perfect Storm and the Beloved get smoked! Hope I’m wrong.

Solid game. Team did what it had to do.

Fuller had an incredible game. Bisky looked reliable and smart (though he caught a break on that pick six). The D made sure Kizer would have to beat us. Wasn’t gonna happen.

    • AlbertInTucson

He was due for a break. He’s had 2 or 3 TD passes taken away from him.

  • BerwynBomber

Btw, Bisky’s running style reminds me of Steve Young’s. Low-centered, thick-thighed. Except Bisky appears a bit faster.

Not a bad comp for our rookie QB.

  • That Guy

All I can say is that Trubisky has been as good a rookie QB as one can realistically ask for. He’s shown weaknesses and a lot of strengths. He’s show inconsistencies that can be fixed by good coaching. He’s shown he can learn, especially from his mistakes. He’s taken command in the huddle and his teammates respect him. He has all the physical tools and shows he has the mental aptitude to improve.

Now, he’s still a boat load of potential that needs to be realized.

But there is no indication he is or will be a bust, and there are plenty of indications he will be a solid pro QB, and possibly a star.

Pace picked right. Maybe Watson was more pro-ready, but Trubisky’s ACLs are in better shape.

Sky’s the limit, boys. 2018, here we come. (Yeah, I’m pretty much giving up on next week)

  • FresnoBear88

Jimmy G will be an elite QB very fuckin soon

    • Dis Guy Trublinsky

Problem with Jimmy G is that his contract expires after his next game. So he’s got a couple starts for the Patriots, and 4? for the Niners so far. Have you seen enough to written him a long term, elite QB money contract? Because that’s what Lynch has to decide after next week.

At this point, based on what I’ve seen, I’d prefer Trubisky and his 3 remaining years on his rookie deal.

Garappolo might be great. But he might also be average, or worse, fools gold. And the likelihood is, somebody is paying that man a shit ton of money this spring.

      • BuddhaJoe

Gotta think SF will break the bank for him. They wouldn’t have traded a high pick for a rental in a lost season otherwise.

        • Dis Guy Trublinsky

You’re probably right. Man is that a roll of the dice. He does look good though in limited work.

        • willbest

Nah, either G signs a reasonable deal for say 3 year 60 mil, 35 mil guarantee or they tag him and pay him 24 million for a year and see what they really have.

      • And 9ers will likely pass on a qb in the draft too, so they’re gonna be pot committed

      • BerwynBomber

Wonder if they would franchise him.

        • willbest

We paid 18 million to evaluate Glennon, and he was throwing to elite talent. G is throwing to my cousin’s in-laws and looking decent. 24 million to see what he’s got when you have all the cap in the world doesn’t seem all that risky.

        • Dis Guy Trublinsky

It would make a lot of sense in this scenario. The risk/reward makes it look like a prudent move.

        • CanadaBear

Who knows? The only downside to the franchise tag is alienating JG and making it more expensive the following year. I think they will sign him because of the pick invested. They had to be pretty convinced going in to trade a 2nd rounder.

          • BerwynBomber

            That’s my guess too.

Business is business, but at the same time this isn’t a Cousins/what do I have to do to prove myself worthy thing, which is to say that maybe G’s demands will be somewhat sane.

Another reason NOT to bet the NFL.

  • willbest

Pretty impressed that NBC decided they weren’t going to compete with Christmas Eve and opted for a late afternoon game tomorrow instead.

  • willbest

Just looking through the week 17 games and NBC doesn’t really look like they have a sure fire both teams want the win game to put on SNF.

Atlanta @ Carolina looks like it could be that game if TB upsets and Seattle wins then Carolina will be looking for the division crown and Atlanta will need a win to get into the playoffs. But if the Saints win and Seahawks lose then the Atlanta is locked into the 6 and Carolina into the 5 seed and its going to be a backup vs. backup affair.

Jags are locked into the #3 seed, but the Titans are at least in a win and in situations where they need to play. The Jags however would have to play the Titans the following week if they lost to them this week. They might prefer the bills or the chargers instead, so they might try regardless.

None of the other teams really even feature good matchup options.

    • BerwynBomber

Are we sure NBC/SNF still has flex rights?

Last week’s SNF game was DAL/OAK. Turned out to be a very entertaining game but here were the other games that weekend:

      NE @ PIT
      LAR @ SEA
      GB @ CAR

And they chose DAL/OAK? Wonder if the league curtailed their rights.

      • CanadaBear

There used to be a formula where CBS/FOX could protect X amount of games/season along with some rules for NBC. Have no idea how it is now. Bears don’t get a lot of flexing these days!!

        • BerwynBomber

Yeah, it’s funny. A majority of the blogs prefers noon games, but you know what a majority of noon games implies? You stink.

The late afternoon or night games can be a pain (and sometimes a disadvantage) but unfortunately that is when you want to be playing.

          • Dis Guy Trublinsky

I wish it was just Sunday afternoon and Monday nights still. I’d prefer college games to just stick to Saturdays too.

Waaaaaay too much out there now all week long.

          • BerwynBomber

I love it. Well, except the London morning games.

          • CanadaBear

When the Bears are halfway decent and winning the majority of those afternoon/night games, I really like them. The last time they had a bunch of those I think was during the Nessman debacle and there were some hideous losses.

      • AlbertInTucson

        I think there’s a 2 week minimum to flex.

        • AlbertInTucson

          Did some research.

They CAN flex on 6 days notice for week 17.

Only late afternoon games may be flexed to the evening.

      • willbest

FOX/CBS has some sort of ability to protect a limited number of games from poaching. I am not entirely sure how it works out, but I doubt CBS would give up a potential AFCC preview. As for the other two, Fox could have protected the rams game and Rodgers might not have been a lock when NBC had to make the decision. Its also possible that Dallas is just that much of a national draw and given that both teams were basically facing elimination they didn’t bother

  • By the way, once Bears recognized they could beat blitzes with screens the game was over. Why didn’t they know that yesterday? – Jeff

This is the million $$$ question.

Once the book about blitzing Trub was out, it made absolute sense to use the screen.

But for some odd reason, it took them this long to counter.

Also, this is why Howard can be a liability. Benny the Jet looked much more natural in those screens.

Trub looked good too, putting touch, waiting till the last moment to set it up.

    • CanadaBear

Benny is way better than Carey or Langford, that’s for sure.

      • I give Pace the biz about a lot of his FA moves, but Benny was the one I really liked from the start.

Perfect complement back. Can run, catch, and even return.

        • Big Mike

This year, or all three years. I love Trevathan.

    • willbest

I rather felt the opposite of Trub. Seeing him live, I felt less confident in him. Though I am fully willing to attribute that to the angle of vision I had. Receivers I thought were open might have been covered if I had a more birdseye view. Incidentally, this is the first time I sat in the 100 level. 3rd row actually. And at that elevation I could really sympathize with not being able see through the man beasts fighting it out in front of you.

      • Big Mike

Those low angled seats are difficult to get a handle on angles.

        • willbest

No doubt. When I saw Prince grab that INT me and everybody around me were cheering. And then we see the video repay and he was 3 feet out of bounds.

But even the stadium announcer was having problems due to the snow. I don’t know how many times he was correcting the ball spot. “With the ball on the Bears 42. I mean 47.” “And what looks like the 33 yard line” “We will say the Browns 34.”

    • Irish Sweetness

      Saquon is coming.

    • Big Mike

Howard has to work on that a lot last season. Trubisky has to find the hot route faster. That’s an experience thing. But he has the composure. That’s under rated from the comfort of the stands or sofa. Merry Christmas.

    Obscure NFL trivia …

Former Bears QB Bob Avellini’s near four decade old NFL record for most NFL passes at home in a season without a single home passing TD was shattered last night by Packers QB Brett Hundley. Avellini’s record, accomplished in 1978, was a 127 pass attempts without a pass TD. Hundley tossed 162 without one.

    • AlbertInTucson

      LOL.

In Avellini’s defense, I believe he spent a lot of time handing off to Walter Payton.

  • Irish Sweetness

    Interesting game, glad I watched.

Cleveland’s D is pretty good, they blitzed Biscuit a lot, they held us pretty good on the ground. Trubs had as many rushing yards as Howard. Cunningham was the leading receiver in yards. Weird game.

Was half-hoping we’d lose to move up in the draft … but how bad would you need to be to lose to the Browns yesterday?

Tackle of the game: Callahan upending Crowell I think.

Pass of the game: Kizer to Fuller. That was money. Only a few guys in the league can make that throw.

    • beninnorcal

I liked Callahan’s tackle, but can’t say it was the best because it came after a 29 yard gain.
I liked a few of Kwiatkowski’s tackles, one in particular that was a really nice solo tackle.

    • Big Mike

Kwiatkowski had an open field tackle that was so textbook, it’s going in my training collection. Merry Christmas Irish. (no losing. the stink of that loss would have lingered all off-season)

No worries, JW, fun game but only be ause the Bears played someone even worse than themselves. Fun to see some of the young players make plays tho.

Merry Christmas to my fellow Christians, Happy Holidays to all others. From a Bears standpoint, I’m feeling blessed. Being connected to the team and its fans as they begin their path back to championship caliber football. Thanks for the online friendships.

    Merry Christmas boys.

Santa brought me a new Bears beer mug. Guess what happened the last time I got a new Bears beer mug. Here’s a hint. It was 2005.

    That’s right…………
