How Do We Do a Draft Party in Chicago?

| February 11th, 2017

Three questions:

(1) Are you, the loyal commenters, even interested in gathering for the draft at a bar in Chicago? I would be happy to lead the way and put something together, get a bar on board, provide sponsored giveaways…etc.

(2) Is it easier to do something like this on Thursday night for the first round or just wait and do it on Saturday for rounds 4-7? That way it’s a Saturday and more convenient for people.

(3) Where would people want it? Downtown is usually convenient but I’d be very flexible.

Just comment below. I’ll keep track over next few days.

Saturday? It would be great to have the 1st pick in hand as well as the opportunity to catch the 2nd and 3rd rounds with the group. Sounds intriguing, I might just have to plan on making that. It would be fun. You’ll all get to see my new tin foil hat.

2 and 3 will be Friday night

      • Sauron’s right eyeball

Yeah….either way. If I made the trip, Saturday makes the most sense but I could see a Friday night being a blast and I’d even entertain a hair of the dog Saturday with the stragglers that couldnt make Friday nights gig.

I could probably drop by on Saturday. Thursday night in the city wouldn’t be doable for me.

Back in the late 90’s, I was stopped and detained at the Canadian border and questioned for 45 minutes about everything under the sun including whether I had heard of or had any dealing with the Michigan Militia. Then I had to wait another 90 minutes for my car to be searched.

My point. I think you would need to know how many people fail the extreme vetting, before you can say oh a Muslim failed, so we must be blocking all Muslims.

  • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Pee-6!(Butch)

Kind of odd. Garret, the possible #1 overall, playfully pleaded for Dallas to trade up for him.

    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2017/02/10/myles-garrett-asks-cowboys-to-trade-up-and-draft-him/

I’m sure all players have preferences, and I’m sure the Browns is never one of them, but gotta wonder where Garrett would want to go after his 1st contract is up now?

Could be much a do about nothing.

    • willbest

Where he makes the most money.

      • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Pee-6!(Butch)

Most likely. I’m certain all players have preferences, but if you’re the Browns now, gotta at least pause.

Schefter once reported that many players now treat the Browns like another college team – 4 years and get the hell out.

Joe Thomas is a rare exception, methinks.

    • BerwynBomber

I’m surprised the Elway/Eli draft situations don’t happen more often.

      • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Pee-6!(Butch)

I think the NFL tries to combat that since in the long run, it would be bad for them.

The order of the draft is set up so that suckass organizations usu pick in the top 5. If more players refuse to go to certain places, then it would just become rather chaotic or defeat the purpose of their draft set-up (I would imagine nearly every player skipping the Browns)

        • BerwynBomber

Of course the NFL does. But some guys — like Elway and Eli most memorably — refuse to have no say. Again, only surprised more very top guys don’t do that.

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Pee-6!(Butch)

It might happen again. I think both Elway and Eli were unique in their own way.

Elway threatened to just play baseball, and the Yankees indeed said they would take him.

Eli’s dad had a lot to say from his previous NFL experience, namely, that the Chargers were a cheap ill-run organization (many of their own fans would probably agree).

It could happen again, but my guess is that it would first have to be a lockdown top3 pick to even have enough leverage (prolly QB) and that player would have to be able to have other options like play baseball or return to college and re-enter the draft the next season.

          • MB30SD

oh, I don’t know… it turned out pretty well for the…. oh… wait. never mind.

          • BerwynBomber

Kinda wonder if Luck has regrets in regard to Irsay/Pagano. But at the time the Manning/Dungy era had given Irsay a lot of cover.

    • MB30SD

My god that kid needs to fire his PR rep/handler

      • willbest

Can’t blame him for wanting to go to Dallas. Dak looks legit. That offense is going to run like a well oiled machine for the next 5-6 years. Get a D-line that can get to the QB and you are talking about annual appearances in the NFCC

        • MB30SD

I didn’t say anything about his reasoning behind or for his desires counselor

      • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Forget-me-Naught!(Butch)

Garrett was smiling in the vid, so I think he even knew the chances were none and nil.

He played for Texas A&M, so I don’t really blame him. Give it a shot.

I doubt that’ll change his draft stock even in CLE.

CLE realizes that NO ONE wants to go there, so biz as usual for them.

        • MB30SD

Here’s my deal… I don’t mind that he did it… The article said he grew up in Arlington and was a cowboys fan since birth basically… But sound/look smart before the draft.

ALWAYS… improoove your stock, NEVER degrade it. Just smh.

If you’re pretty much guaranteed to be the #1 pick, you take out a loan if necessary and get someone much smarter than you (prolly not difficult in this case) and don’t do a single Fucking thing without consulting him first. Period.

    • AlbertInTucson

Myles Garrett must have put all of 5 or 10 seconds into coming up with that ridiculous prosepective trade.

The Browns have ZERO interest in a brittle, 37 year old QB and Romo would retire before agreeing to go to Cleveland at this stage of his career.

      • Johnnywad

Al just got through watching Kelly’s Heroes. Your take?

Don’t know why, but I have never been able to get into that one.

And it IS one HELL of a cast.

I will have to make it a point to check it out again.

          • Johnnywad

Donald Sutherland as Oddball makes it worth the watch to me. You’ve got to wait a while before he enters the film though.

Funny thing is, I doubt his character even existed in the era. Definitely more of a 60’s vibe to him. Nonetheless.

Hey, Will. what do you make of this? Self defense (esp if racial slurs were indeed used) or nah?

    http://www.cnn.com/videos/sports/2016/12/17/joe-mixon-video-oklahoma-newday.cnn

    • willbest

We talked about this a while back on the blog. First I don’t really care what was said. She could have called him a country n****r and it wouldn’t justify him hitting her first HOWEVER it was clearly self defense.Step by step this is what happens

      1) He is walking away (disengagement of whatever verbal exchange)
      2) She gets up and pushes him (battery)
      3) He makes a threatening gesture (unprovoked this would be assault, but its a measured response to her battery)
      4) She slaps him (escalated assault & battery)
      5) He punches once and steps off having neutralized the threat to self

The problem for Mixon is equality is a myth, and the optics for him are horrible. As a society we are programed to remove much of the responsibility from women for their actions, and thus the DA can’t let this slide. And even the DA would admit that he is allowed to use some force in response to #4.

For example, had he grabbed her by the shoulder forced her into the seat and said “You stay the fuck here until I leave you stupid bitch” there would be no case. But you aren’t allowed to kill somebody who hits you if there is no objective basis for you to fear for your life.

I will give another example. Back in my dating years I was having an argument with a girl and was walking out of the room. She shoved me and it was enough to propel my head into the door frame. I spun around ready to deck her and the visual I am greeted with is her crouched down a foot with her hands over her mouth and “oh shit, didn’t mean it” expression. If I had hit her in that case I wouldn’t have been able to claim self-defense. She had clearly disengaged.

But there is a lot of gray area, and her being a woman means he pleads to a baby crime rather than risk it. If it the aggressor were a man, even some 5’6″ shit stain of a man, no crime. And you know what, if there was no video of the punch there would be no crime either. But with something visual to show the Jury and her laid out cold. Plea Deal.

Even still should he have maybe pulled his punch? Perhaps he used too much force given her size and stature. This is why I don’t think that is the case. The goal when you are attacked is to neutralize the threat to your body. Fighting women in public however is extremely violatile. Had he slapped her back or knocked her down, who knows how many people might have come to her aid once the yelling and screaming started. Once the fight began, the quick KO became his ideal out.

Incidentally, I had read about her civil suit against him for his signing bonus. This is what she is alleging.

      1) he came up to her and implied she should get with him (he was less than gentlemanly in his courtship)
      2) She turned him down
      3) He said something like “don’t tell me you would rather be with this fag”
      4) She defended her friends honor

      • BerwynBomber

I don’t think a man should ever hit a woman but if a guy is merely retaliating to a woman who has physically assaulted him … well, kinda hard to get too worked up about it unless he used it as an excuse to give her a five-minute long beatdown, which Mixon didn’t.

Plus, why won’t this story die? Didn’t Mixon already have to sit out a year? What sort of pound of flesh do people want? Five years in jail? Never to play ball again?

        • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Forget-me-Naught!(Butch)

I agree. Don’t hit a woman, but never know. What if that chick is some MMA badass? lol

I think he just reacted. It wasn’t a socially acceptable reaction, of that we all know, but I don’t know how it was an ILLEGAL reaction?

As Will has pointed out, lots of gray area (like how BIG does a chick have to be in order for a man to be in ‘real’ fear?)

And as you mentioned, Mixon sat out a yr (which ironically some teams might put in the plus dept citing he’s fresher).

It’ll get brought up because of the Draft and from what I’ve read, Mixon is arguably the 2nd best HB in the draft, so where he falls will be a point of interest.

          • AlbertInTucson

And the righteously indignant conveniently ignore the fact that SHE was clearly guilty of assault and battery.

        • AlbertInTucson

          “Why won’t this story die”

          It should.

          It won’t.

          Because that video is forever.

          • BerwynBomber

True, but the video, at least when I first saw it, kinda absolves Mixon. At least that was my take. She was the one that escalated the situation into a physical confrontation. Should he have walked away? Yes. But the fact that he popped her once in return hardly seems like the biggest crime in the world.

            Let it freaking go.

          • AlbertInTucson

Yes, clearly self defense, but his response looks like overkill.

Like killing an ant with a .44 magnum.

            That’s all the pearl-clutchers see.

          • BerwynBomber

Oh, I agree. He was in the wrong. But it just wasn’t as huge a wrong as the outrage would have us believe — my take at least.

“I think coach Todd Bowles, a big believer in team chemistry,
underestimated the impact of not having Fitzpatrick around. (Full
disclosure: I did, but I don’t get paid to run the team.) It also
created an awkward dynamic. For five months, the Jets pretended Geno Smith
was their starter, only to “demote” him the minute Fitzpatrick walked
through the door on the eve of training camp. It was unfair to Smith.”

That’s sorta the feeling I got that Fitz was just thrown in last minute and everything was supposed to be peaches and unicorns again.

It probably soured him from the start and just festered.

But 6INTs in ONE game. Jesus.

      • BerwynBomber

Fitz sucks. And he was a bit overrated coming into this year, but I can see the author’s point about how that situation could fuck up a team. As he says, do you think a guy like Belichick or Parcells would let a guy like Fitz hold the team hostage?

You say goodbye and go to a Hoyer-like Plan B.

Def. That organization is just dysfunctional.

Bmarsh in that locker room is not exactly a stabilizing influence either. Kinda have to feel for Forte.

Forte would’ve been perfect on the Pats this year.

          • BerwynBomber

And the Pats wanted him. Apparently his agent jumped the gun by having him sign with NYJ. Ah well. Goodbye ring.

When Israel was chartered by the U.N. it was predicated on stipilulating a 2 state solution. At the time of its Charter, 10% of the country was Israeli controlled with 90% under Palestinian control. 60 + years later, it’s now the reverse. Israel has had worldwide political and financial support unparrelled in history. The back story is that the whole fiasco has nothing to do with Jews or Muslims and everything to do with controlling the world’s spice.

    • That Guy

Idiot. “the Palestinians, who have called this land home for thousands of years, live their lives” did not exist prior to 1948. If we are being generous, they’ve existed since the first World War when the “British Mandate of Palestine” took control of the land.

Jews have lived in Israel for over 3000 years. There have been various other groups in Israel for much of that time, though the Muslim religion didn’t exist prior to around 600 C.E. The “Palestinians” or “Philistines” described in the bible are not the same people ethnically as those using the name today.

Bennett thinks he is being “voice for the voiceless.” Instead, he’s another guy who spent half an hour doing google searches and fell victim to the massive anti-Israel propaganda machine. That propaganda is produced by modern palestinians and also by the various countries in the middle east that are threatened by Israel’s existence as the only true democracy in that part of the world.

Bennett should go on the trip and see for himself first hand what’s there. Then he can stay and go look at the West Bank if he wants. But I think I’m giving him too much credit to ask for that.

      • MB30SD

100%, I gave in and basically said the same thing below. Ridiculous.

      • Sauron’s right eyeball

I very much understand your perspective NB but I’d like to share what I believe is part of the equation that very few people ever acknowledges that are part of any religion or people group. In my opinion, all knowledge has been corrupted over time and has been used to subvert mankind for political and economical reasons and the underlying reason for every religion today can be traced to a small group of elitists whose only aim is to wield power and control over the masses. .

The perceived age of a thing cannot be used as a qualifier as to who is right or wrong. People tried pointing out the errors of religion to me but I had to do the leg work myself which was born out of an insatiable desire for truth and justice. I had to stop relying on only referencing religious dogma and instead, study religion alongside the suppressed historical evidence in order to come to a comprehensive synthesis that I believe is accurate and reliable for me. What is truth, right?

It’s my belief that there are truisms in all religions and cultures that are beneficial to mankind but it is a mistake to think that one group has supremacy over another. That’s the trap of religion in my opinion because when a person claims to be part of the only group standing on the truth, it chains the mind to a false paradigm and makes adversaries out of any group that disagrees or opposes them.

I believe most Muslim’s, Jews, and Christians(and all people groups practicing organized religion) have all been lied to on a scale of monumental proportions resulting in innocent and decent people being victimized by a hidden elite cabala ruling behind the veil. Quite frankly, I have discovered that blind obedience, blinds the mind.

At the end of the day, either we are all part of the human race or Darwin was correct in asserting there are favored races. I reject ANY form of cast system. Anyone that asserts themselves to be gods chosen people under any religion has missed the boat and eventually, their island is going to sink. Could it be that all the murder and unrest in the middle east has nothing to do with a tiny piece of real estate but rather what the inhabitants of that entire part of the world have been taught since birth? It’s a question worth answering.

          1. Israel’s right to exist, defend itself and, frankly, to build a lot of the settlements can be defended on grounds which are completely independent of religion.

          2. There is way too much evidence that you or I can personally go observe to claim that we’ve been “lied to.” There are people alive today that survived the holocaust, yet there are still those who, for political purposes, deny it happened. Likewise the Israeli War of Independence, the Six Day War and the Yom Kippor War. One of the greatest accomplishments of the pro-palestine propaganda machine has been to get people to simply throw up their arms and say “who knows?”

          3. If you ignore history, you simply take MB’s point. The Arabs lost multiple wars. They have engaged in terror attacks (against people I know personally). They are actively attacking civilians to this day. If Mexican “freedom fighters” were launching missiles into California on an almost daily basis, what would you want the US government to do?

          • MB30SD

            Yeah!

            Wait… um… yeah?

(I’ll assume you mean that I didn’t really make my argument based on history, but more on actions)

I’m sugesting that anybody that’s not an independent observer on the ground, really knows the full extend of what’s taking place. We’re being diddled.

I’ve been there. I’ve seen it. I know people who live there now. These are not simple issues, but to call Israel an “occupied territory” is simply disgusting.

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

It’s an emotional and sensitive issue for sure.

          • That Guy

I meant that if you don’t want to talk about ancient history (who was there 1000 years ago), you can just look at the last 60 years. They keep attacking and losing.

          • MB30SD

Yes, that’s what I thought you meant.

Just go with the w/l… It’s less messy.

I’ve advocated for a limited invasion of Mexico. We take the US border down to around Mexico city and maybe we pickup Puerto Vallarta as ours and call it a day.

The wall from sea to shining sea through GuanaJuato can be MUCH shorter than it needs to be now, and Texas will have an awesome real estate boom.

    From Data:

I averaged the data together for each group and especially compared starters vs. everybody else (non-starters). 6 traits were identified that were significantly different. [GP screams]
For each trait, I sorted the quarterbacks from best to worst and looked for a “benchmark” value [GP screams again], which most of the starters hit and most of the non-starters missed. This always fell such that 5 or 6 of the 8 starters were above the benchmark; there was typically a significant dropoff after this point such that this was a logical cutoff. [GP face palms]
Based on this, here’s the ideal profile I found to look for in a highly drafted QB coming out of college:

He should win at least 77% of his college starts (6/8 starters hit, 3/9 nonstarters)
He should win a conference title (6/8 starters hit, 4/9 nonstarters)
His final college season should feature at least 8.7 yards per passing attempt (5/8 starters hit, 3/9 nonstarters)
His final college season should feature a touchdown on at least 7.3% of his throws (6/8 starters hit, 3/9 nonstarters)
His final college season should feature a TD/INT ratio of at least 3.7:1 (6/8 starters hit, 2/9 nonstarters)
His final college season should feature a college passer rating of at least 166 (5/8 starters hit, 2/9 nonstarters)

    Clenches teeth.

The only other stats guy that was on Da Blog was BillW, and he was a pedantic asshole. Doc is a math Ph.D and all, and I have my stats MS, so please excuse me while I dig my fingernails into my chair as these “stats” are presented with concrete conclusions associated to them. I am trying not to BillW this shit.

Please Data. If you are gonna do this shit, do it right:
