DaBearsPod Week 11 Featuring Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free-Press [AUDIO]

| November 17th, 2017

On this episode of DaBearsPod:

  • Jeff discusses the unrest at Halas Hall following the Bears loss to the Packers (based on actual source information) and lays out the stakes for John Fox Sunday against Detroit.
  • Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free-Press picks up his daughter and explains why the Lions haven’t been able to run the ball since Barry Sanders retired. He also weighs in on two potential head coaching candidates currently on Lions staff: Jim Bob Cooter and Teryl Austin.
  • Reverend Dave has a friend who shot a guy.
  • Fox-related tunes! (Both good too.)

  • Irish Sweetness

For the McCaskeys to lay down minimum requirements now …. why would you do that? Fox isn’t ‘improving’. He won’t ‘improve’. He’s not some well-bred two year old colt. He is who he is. If he’s not the guy, then how is he the guy if he beats Detroit, or anyone else for that matter?

    • Big Mike

A good take on the situation. We’ll never know, but maybe Pace had Fox on the way out, UNLESS he had a great season. We’ve all been thinking is this the loss that gets him run out of town. Maybe Pace had a higher bar than that. But that Packers loss sure didn’t inspire any confidence. Fox is the wrong guy for Trubisky.

    • Bear Instincts

This right here – If he’s not the guy, then how is he the guy if he beats Detroit, or anyone else for that matter?

    • BearDown100393

      All part of Ernie’s “plan”

  • Irish Sweetness

    DaBearsBlog @dabearsblog
Mariota last night. Cautionary tale for Trubisky. He’s taking way too many hits. And it’s changing how he plays.

If we draft OT twice in the top two rounds I would not cry. Make your statement. Build the wall.

    • Big Mike

If we draft the best OTs in the world, they won’t be much better than the 2 we have for a couple years. The o-line is just beat to heck right now. There is no report on him, but Whitehair is playing hurt. So was Long. So is Sitton.

      • Bear Instincts

We need to shut K.Long down for the season and let him get surgery.

        • Big Mike

Hard to say with what we know. He could be close to 100%. He could be growing a new collarbone. I don鈥檛 disagree with the thought.

          • Bear Instincts

Better to be safe than sorry. We need that line at 100% next year. Long is the best talent on the line. Hell I might shift him to center to prolong his career and shift Cody to guard

          • Papa Pawn

Long would rather retire than play center

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

I thought he sat out of the last game more because of his hand injury and not his shoulder.

          • Big Mike

That鈥檚 probably correct, but his shoulder injury is likely still bothering him. You could see him favoring that side with his punches. I think it is also why they were going to put him at left guard.

        • BearDown100393

          Where to start?

  • Bear Instincts

Prediction: Lions 23, Bears 17 unless K.Fuller craps his pants again

    • BearDown100393

Up until last game, Fuller was comeback player material.

“I’m gonna come after you with everything I have,” Jerry Jones said to Rodger Goodell. He then referred to the Deflategate scandal and Patriots owner Robert Kraft. “If you think Bob Kraft came after you hard, Bob Kraft is a fucking pussy compared to what I’m going to do. ”

Instead of show tunes I would have gone with Foxy Lady but that’s just me. Jeff definitely has those show tunes in his blood.

The Bears keep winning the coin toss and deferring every week. Of course, they start out in a coma and then play from behind. I have no doubt Sunday will start out the same way. If Fuller plays as bad as he did last week, he will get benched and the Beloved will be getting smoked. Hope these guys show up on Sunday. FWIW, Kyle Long and McMannis practiced yesterday.

    • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

I think I would have gone with “Fox on the Run”

      • CanadaBear

I’d much rather listen to Jimi than The Sweet but I gotta admit the video is compelling!

        • BerwynBomber

I would too (of course). But given the context, the Sweet song works better.

        • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

yes that video is very compelling, and we haven’t had a Booby Friday in awhile.

      • willbest

        Nice pick for friday

    • BearDown100393

      Birdcage also adores showtunes.

  • CanadaBear

Here’s an interesting long-form piece on Midget Wrestling. I always wanted to be the world’s biggest Midget Wrestler (with everyone knowing I wasn’t a Midget) and just whip up on the Little Guys. Playing the bad guy would have been too much fun!

    • Bear Instincts

its them or us and i choose us

      • willbest

Alright, well just make sure you have a good alibi, when Boston Dynamics gets firebombed.

  • AlbertInTucson

The PODCAST often needs to be edited.

    • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

      why?

      • AlbertInTucson

        Dead air and irrelevant material.

It would have flowed perfectly from

“This is my buddy, Dave Birkett, of the Detroit Free Press” right into “I guess I’m just so dejected…”.

If it HAD been edited so, listeners would not have even noticed.

        • SC Dave

You damned elitist! I mean, if Jeff had to wait, why shouldn’t you?

          馃檪

          • AlbertInTucson

            Sorry.

Editing is what I do for a living.

            Can’t help myself.

I cringe when I hear all the material that should be left out.

          • CanadaBear

I just checked out until it got back on track. I try not to be too critical (not that you are. I get why it bothers you). Overall, I like his interviews on the podcasts.

          • AlbertInTucson

I just don’t need the phone ringing, kids getting into the car, etc. etc.

He admitted that he edits his contributors.

          • CanadaBear

I totally get it and agree with you. I’m just glad he has some interesting guests on the podcast. I usually skip The Rev.

          • AlbertInTucson

I enjoy the guests. I’ll even listen to the Rev sometimes if the profanity isn’t moving the Richter scale.

“Bear Down” is always good. He should alternate it with the Instrumental version, which is a classic.

          • SC Dave

            And Bring The BONGOS Back!

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

I like the amateurish nature of it.

          • AlbertInTucson

You must like the Bears idea of offense, too.

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

lol, nope. just saying it fits Jeff’s style, one thing I like about this site. It’s not clean cut, still has the fanboy feel to it..

  • AlbertInTucson

“They thought they turned a corner.”

As I posted in Data’s Response last Sunday, it “… turned out to be a blind alley.”

    • BearDown100393

      They did.

      Deadman’s Corner.

      • AlbertInTucson

        For Fox, probably so.

  • BearDown100393

The pragmatist from within wants a remaining winless season to better reload the shotgun for next season. The fan from within wants to win out beginning with the Gawdamn Loins.

It would be refreshing to be more upbeat in frigging November with something to play for this season as opposed to “wait until next season”.

Show some pride in that locker room.

    • SC Dave

I’ll take the “win out” plate, with a side of “knocking GB out of the playoffs”.

      • BearDown100393

Anything to piss on Grimace’s season.

    • SC Dave

Oh, and by the way, only a dimwit (rather than a pragmatist) wants the establish a culture of losing with a young team.

      • BearDown100393

Only old drunk defends a losing legacy to his dying breath.

    DaBearsBlog @dabearsblog
    “This sucks.”

RE: Trib is moving OUT of Tribune Tower.

    • CanadaBear

Maybe it’s because I’m old and beat down but I have a real hard time getting emotionally invested in most corporations. Other than sports, of course! It’s a pisser about the newspaper biz but time marches on.

      • willbest

Once upon a time corporations gave a shit about the United States rather than focusing on their global empires.

        • CanadaBear

Not sure i agree but they were more low-key about it. No doubt corporations used to be focused short and long term where now it’s all about the next quarter.

          • willbest

Corporate founders carry out quite a bit differently than hired CEO mercs operating ostensibly at the behest of the large mutual funds and hedge fund managers. Bezos for example doesn’t give a shit about quarterlies, but then he controls the company. Basically, the owners while they amassed great wealth did so through value added production rather than quick stock gimmicks. International Trade was also comparatively expensive back then. This necessitated a more domestic focus. Even the elites had more in common with the common man back then. Its easy to fly off to Davos, and completely isolate yourself from everybody not in your class today. The reason NYC, DC, and SF are such expensive places to live is so none of those people have to deal with anybody in the bottom 95%. And they are specifically designed.

Contrast the old guard with the latest round of billionaires exemplified by Zuckerberg. FB could be anywhere and in fact 80% of its users aren’t in the US. This is not a guy or a company that gives flop about the interests of the US because it could be located in Bangladesh tomorrow if it really wanted to be.

And this isn’t some sort of nostalgia for the Robber Barons of old, because they weren’t any better than they were afforded. Just a note about the changes in circumstances of economy over the last 100 odd years really served to change the nature of elite greed.

        • SC Dave

No… once upon a time their government did not tax them at the highest rates on the planet.

    • BearDown100393

      Don’t caaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

      • AlbertInTucson

        Sure you do.

If you actually DIDN’T, you wouldn’t bother posting.

        • BearDown100393

I really don’t caaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrreeeeeeeee about the Trib leaving the Trib Tower.

          Honestly, I don’t.

  • CanadaBear

I’m not a gambler and don’t follow the point spreads but the last I heard the Beloved were +3 with no movement. Are the point spreads (last week against the Fudge and this week) realistic or is it more a matter of Bears fans not betting?

  • CanadaBear

When the Beloved traded Clutts for McMannis, we all were pissed and for good reason. Clutts was a fucker to deal with as a lead blocker and he seemed to revel in it. But whenever McMannis is out, the ST’s are more of a hold your breath type of thing but not in a good way. He really is a difference maker on ST’s after all these years and I’m pretty sure Clutts is no longer in the league.

    • McMannis is the best sp teamer since Graham (who went on to the Ravens and has made himself a nice career at CB).

I guess McMannis was better for us in the long term, but Clutts would’ve helped out Forte, which in turn would’ve helped out Cutler and everyone else.

He also played specials and was a maniac and by most accounts a workaholic, bringing it everyday.

That’s the type of guy you want around

Except Trestman, cuz he’s a pussy.

      • SC Dave

A nice career indeed… always liked him. Thanks for pointing that out, so I’d look him up.

        https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/G/GrahCo99.htm

        • CanadaBear

You just know Gym Shorts will get the most out of him. I can’t stand Shorts for all the obvious reasons but mostly because his squads are always dirty. Gotta admit they usually bring it on game day.

        • I really liked him at slot.
I thought he should’ve been given a chance at RCB, but I guess he didn’t fit the Lovie 2 mold because he was a bit undersized.

Sometime coaches get too caught up in measurables.

Jennings had himself ONE good yr, but not as good as Graham.

          I do like Callahan though.

I see some Graham in him. He always seems glued to his guy.

He was out last week, Le Blanc was in, and we suddenly get torched by a back up.

Not saying it was Le Blanc’s fault, but Callahan is on another tier than Le Blanc.

Just hope he can stay healthy.

          • CanadaBear

            Hasn’t practiced all week.

          • Fuck.

Meows have dangerous slot receivers too

          • CanadaBear

If they let the Loins have any type of run game, it’s going to be a long day. I see it like last week, either the Beloved play well and win a close one or they get spanked and everyone starts making plans for January with the family.

          • BerwynBomber

Technically, Tiny Tim had one PB year and couple of other decent/good ones. But then his game slipped rather dramatically.

I like LeBlanc as slight step above a JAG, but yeah, he’s not quite at Callahan’s level.

And on the backend, Amos’s game has slipped the last two outings.

Phil Emery really knew what he was doing as GM……..

    • SC Dave

FYI, Tyler lasted 5 seasons in the NFL.

      https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/C/ClutTy00.htm

      • CanadaBear

        Loved his attitude.

        • It’s all part of the plan

every RB he blocked for had monster years.

  • Good podcast, Jeff.

Birkett’s nugget on the Lion’s not having a 100 yd rusher since 2013 (reggie bush) and haven’t finished in the top half since Barry Sanders.

    Holy shit!

That’s one of my cons on Jim Bob (getting rid of a good FB doesn’t help)

    …………….

    On the coaching search note…

Here’s a dark horse no one has brought up yet.

    Dennis Allen, Saints DC.

We all know Pace’s connections to the Saints, so maybe he head hunts a DC who turned a D that was abject shit for over a decade into one of the most dominant Ds in the league, perhaps the best.

Then, Allen picks a good veteran OC he trusts to mold Trub and Pound the rock.

    (Insert name here)

Call it a reverse Rams where instead of a hotshot OC, Pace goes with a hot-shot DC, and relies on a vet “QB whisperer” to run the O.

    ………….

Also, Irish, you might get a boner, but I heard that Chucky is seriously thinking of coming back.

HOWEVER, word around the watercooler is that if he does, Chucky’s looking at replacing Del Rio in OAK or taking over the Bucs.

    Who knows?

He likes Trub, and they’re both Ohioans. Maybe he could go that route.

    • AlbertInTucson

Chucky would go BACK to the Raiders after what they did to him?

I realize Al Davis is long gone, but, still…

      • CanadaBear

I know nothing about Mark Davis other than he has a really bad hair style. Maybe he and Chucky were close back in the day. They probably shared a lot of horror stories dealing with Al.

        • BearDown100393

Mark Davis cut the wrong gangster out of the mega deal in Vegas.

      • They LOVE him in OAK – and yeah, Al is gone, so I don’t think he’s gonna hold that against his son, who by most accounts, is personable (hair withstanding)

Molding Carr with a decent Oline, Cooper/Crabtree and Mac on the other might be tempting.

Also might be the last chance to win a SB b4 they move to Las Vegas.

Makes a lot of sense. Rumor is he has a clause to get out of his ESPN contract.

        • BearDown100393

Gruden’s knowledge of offense remains impeccable.

          • The thing that separates him from other retreads is that he’s still involved in the game. It’s not like Gibbs who was in NASCAR then hopped back into the NFL and crashed and burned.

Chucky every yr scouts QBs for his QB Camp. So he’s still watching college game tape to an extent.

He def does his homework for his broadcasts.

As an announcer he can see NFL trends league wide, not just on O, but D.

Could give him a broader perspective.

So while he’s not technically coaching, he’s still doing a lot of it – cuz – well, he loves it.

Window shopping might give him an itch to go in the store.

However, he comes from a strict WCO (Trestman) and that playbook is infamously complex .

That would be totally alien to Trub and would take him some time to learn.

(That’s why Reid is sitting Mahomes for at least 1 yr)

          • BearDown100393

IMO Gruden might be the best teacher for offense to a player willing to listen and practice hard. His track record is incredible.

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

whats his track record…11 years as head coach. 3 years with a top 10 offense. the other 8 years his offenses were in the bottom half of the league.

          • BearDown100393

Traded by Davis to Tampa. Resuscitated Dungy’s dank offense to at least keep a loaded defense off the field for a few minutes and came out with a ring.

Yeah, he clearly sucked. And knows nothing about offense or quarterback coaching.

            Thanks for playing.

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

not saying he sucks, but I am not going to say he is an offensive genius either. He really did not resuscitate Dungy’s offense, the loaded Defense won that year.

    • BerwynBomber

Not to put too fine a point of it, but they had a nice rushing attack in ’14 with Bush, J. Bell and Riddick. And obviously a nice RB receiving corps with Riddick alone.

    • SC Dave

      Coach 1: 11 yrs, 95-81-0 (.556), 5-4 playoff record, 1 SB, challenges 35.8%
      Coach 2: 11 yrs, 114-61-1 (.650), 10-8 playoff record, 1 SB, challenges 50.0%

Coach 2 does not include current season. Who do you take?

      • SC Dave

Ha ha ha… no one taking the bait?

      • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

      • EnderWiggin

        Is it Coughlin and McCarthy?

        • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

Has to be McCarthy. Coughlin has more SBs

      • coach 2 looks like the choice.

        Dungy?

        Lovie?

Well at least lack of objectivity has been fully disclosed.

    • It’s all part of the plan

      • Dis Guy Trublinsky

And considerably more objective than many journalists today.

    • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis
