Da Saturday Scout: Derwin James, S, FSU

| October 21st, 2017

Player: Derwin James, Safety, Florida State

Game: vs. Louisville, 11:00 AM CT

Video

What They’re Saying

  • CBS’ Chris Trapasso on Oct. 10: “As usual, James was good against Miami, yet I’m not seeing the variety of game-altering plays this season he had in 2015. He was a true difference-maker as a freshman at all levels of the field. This year, not so much. James is a gargantuan safety prospect who runs like a slot cornerback, and when he’s rolling, he’s a tackling machine who also flies to the football in coverage.”
  • From USA Today: “I think he’s every bit as good as anybody we’ve ever played against,” Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban said of the Seminoles safety, via the Orlando Sentinel. “This guy’s just a very aggressive player.”
  • Chad Reuter of NFL.com: “James in an enforcer, pure and simple. Everyone expected him to return to form after missing most of last season. James doesn’t appear to have lost any closing speed, and he’s certainly not afraid of contact. His length will help him play in the box on Sundays, likely in the hybrid linebacker/safety role that’s currently in vogue.”

I Think…

  • …the Bears will win too many games to pick James at their actual draft position. With that kind of athleticism, one has to believe he’ll blow minds in Indianapolis and be gone by the fifth pick.
  • …I haven’t seen many defensive backs look as comfortable as James rushing from the edge. Then I see his coverage skills and wonder, “Is this kid going to change the safety position in the NFL?”
  • …I love that he’s owning this disappointing FSU campaign. A Tomahawk Nation blog post featured James explaining he could have done more in their recent loss to North Carolina State. That kind of stand-up behavior in the face of adversity will delight NFL scouts.
  • …the Bears should avoid drafting anybody who has an injury history.

Why Watch This Week

As Clemson QB Kelly Bryant struggles with injuries and FSU struggles to win enough games to get bowl eligible, there’s a good chance Lamar Jackson and the Cardinals will be the most explosive, multidimensional offense James faces the rest of this season. Against a run/pass threat like Jackson, safeties have to be at their most disciplined and their most aggressive. Over-pursuit can lead to big plays down the field and staying back on your heels can lead to the mobile quarterback sprinting by you down the sideline. With some believing Jackson will play on Sundays (not quite sure if I’m one of them) this is the right quarterback to evaluate James against.

We have safeties, Jeff. Find us a pass rusher and a receiver. And a left tackle and a right tackle. Or keep that powder dry for a running back. Keep the stable full.

Just watched Warren Moon’s AFL. So the dude had the tightest spiral that ever was. Why? He kept his nails long on his throwing hand, so you get that ‘zip’ as the ball leaves your hand, and it’s the kind of spiral that NFL films and all wide receivers love.

Mitchell, get to it. Gnarly nails.

    • Dis Guy Trublinsky

No dry powder needed for running backs.

      • Irish Sweetness

If Jordan goes down, Benny C and Tarik ain’t doin’ what Jordan does. Tarik is averaging about two yards. Marcus Allen and Bo in the backfield should be the ultimate goal. Joe and Steve. Redundancy.

To win the superbowl you first need extra pieces to last the season. Injuries happen, and to say “If Jordan goes down then we should fuck our season anyway …” is pants. We should draft another one next year. We draft to upgrade Benny.

        • CanadaBear

So they need to get another stud RB to sit on the bench unless Howard goes down while they ignore the desperate needs at WR, OL, DL and LB?

          • willbest

Irish appears to be off his bipolar meds. Like 3 days ago he was bitching that we ran it too much. Well unless you are running it 50 times a game like we did there is not earthly justification for 2 stud RBs on your roster.

Oh and we happen to have 2 stud RBs on our roster, they just don’t happen to both be 1 cut bruisers.

          • Dis Guy Trublinsky

And keeping your powder dry would indicate you’re prepared to spend money or picks. It’s just not necessary for running backs anymore. Great backs can be found late in the draft, and they’re far too likely to be injured early and often to spend on.

          • Irish Sweetness

This is true. I don’t think Hunt was a first rounder. ah, #86, 3rd round.

          • Irish Sweetness

Never medicated, brother. Can’t afford it.

          • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

Sounds like he now wants a 2 HOF type QBs also.

          • AlbertInTucson

What round did they find howard Howard in…?

          • AlbertInTucson

            The 5th.

And Cohen was found in the 4th.

      • AlbertInTucson

        Sure, sure.

More backs because we’re so set at WR.*

        *Sarcasm.

        • Irish Sweetness

Draft WRs? Are you off your meds, Al? We need help at WR, we can’t sit around for 3 years waiting for college boys to get the picture. Cam, Kendall, Kevin … I’d say we get the tall guy from somewhere – maybe that is the draft, but they seem to be rare enough.

  • CanadaBear

Right now I think the Beloved have bigger issues than S (I can’t believe it but it’s true). Waaaaaaay too early for draft talk.

  • CanadaBear

in case you missed it yesterday (I saw it live), check out how bad Mr Kate Upton embarrasses Todd Frazier on strike 3. The ball is moving all over the place and Frazier’s swing is hilarious. I think it’s the worst swing I’ve ever seen by a non-pitcher in the majors.

    https://www.si.com/mlb/2017/10/20/todd-frazier-swing-justin-verlander-video-yankees-astros-alcs

    • AlbertInTucson

      Loved it.

      • CanadaBear

I like Frazier and I’m guessing he took a ton of crap (and will take a lot more). Funny stuff.

  • leftcoastdave

I still pose the question about the return of AJ. Missing half of his targets, not likely to hit his incentive targets at the rate he is going. Will he and CW get on the same page? He’s on a one year deal and might make for a great FA target since he knows the O.

    • CanadaBear

He took less money to play for Phi. I don’t think he’s coming back unless he has no other options.

      • Dis Guy Trublinsky

I doubt Pace even bothers with him.

      • leftcoastdave

That’s the point. What options will he have and does the organization want to give him another chance with an incentive laden contract. The did offer more than Philly and now you’ve got to think AJ (if he has the maturity) knows what he did wrong and that back with da Bears he might have a better shot at the greatness he thought would be his.

    • Irish Sweetness

CW is on the right page ….. AJ doesn’t have it in him. Like he didn’t here. We’re not missing a Steve Largeant or Randy Moss here.

      • leftcoastdave

He “had” it here, but it was his tude that made him drop in value. I don’t know what is up at Philly, but what he did to himself last year in Chi is costing him bigley. Can he come back from that?

  • willbest

“the Bears will win too many games to pick James at their actual draft position.” – Jeff

Just eyeballing the schedule, I think 8 wins would be entirely optimistic. This is looking like a 5-6 win team. So 8-13 depending on how the rest of the league shakes up. I presume this is the #1 DB prospect at the moment? If so he could go in the top 10, but you have to figure 2-3 QBs go in the top 10 this year right? Supposed to be a really good QB class.

    • BuddhaJoe

I think 7-9 wins can still happen. It gets a lot easier after tomorrow.

      • AlbertInTucson

        It never gets easier.

  • FresnoBear88

This Texas OSU game is great! I’m really loving watching college football more and more. The NFL is turning into a soap opera and I’d rather watch these college guys play to earn it.

    • willbest

NCAA is a criminal cartel as far as I am concerned. Half those kids shouldn’t be in those schools and are incapable of learning at the college level. They are there wasting their time for 3-4 years working for a lotto ticket.

      • SC Dave

More important than the time is the health

        • Irish Sweetness

          By injecting dianabol and PEDs?

      • Dis Guy Trublinsky

And what would that half be doing if not playing college football in those schools they don’t belong in?

This is the rub for me. Popular complaint is that they’re being used and some don’t belong. And yet, any of them can leave any time they like. Further, many of those kids you refer to that don’t belong, might be living the best years of their lives there.

      • AlbertInTucson

We all know who the NCAA looks out for and it certainly isn’t the players.

  • madscout12

1st round next year needs to be a stud pass rusher. After Floyd, who is there on the outside? McPhee? Willie looked old and slow this year.

2nd round would ideally be a big WR, along with a few late round WRs.

Gonna have to fill holes in FA again. Wouldn’t be surprised to see some WR, OLB, and ILB pickups. Wouldn’t mind a swing at a T. I think the secondary has shown that it can function well enough, but keep an eye over the rest of the season.

    • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

      FYI Willie is on IR.

      • madscout12

Oh, I’m aware. I also watched the games he did play. He wasn’t very effective.

    • Irish Sweetness

Jeff’s safety looked pretty good going after the passer …. I want an OT more than anything. Shaheen’s spot could have provided that. We need a starting OT more than we need a 4th TE.

  • BearDown100393

Harbaugh’s defense being shredded right now by Penn State.
    Is this a good thing?

    • Dis Guy Trublinsky

It is if you want him to coach the Bears. But not if you want him coaching the Bears.

  • BuddhaJoe

Bought a new smartphone and a Switch today and getting a new lesson in technology. I used to be a big nerd but this shit is humbling me since its been a while. The touchscreens are the worst part

    • BuddhaJoe

My hands are too fucking big for this shit. Plus the circulation aint that great.

    • Irish Sweetness

I had to ask children how to do all the ‘new’ things you do with your fingers on the screen. But hey, give them a phone number and an old dial-up rotary phone and see how far they get!

  • AlbertInTucson

Panthers C, Ryan Khalil still listed as questionable.

    So is ther K, Gang.

One safety is out, another questionable.

Would seemed to be an opportunity for the Bears to make some hay with their tight ends on Sunday .

    • AlbertInTucson

      Kalil expected to play.

    • Irish Sweetness

Khalil is playing, I believe I heard.

  • AlbertInTucson

    FF Post.
    .
    .
    .
    .
So ESPN’s Michael Fabiano says “Sit Alshon Jeffrey”.

Apparently OBLIVIOUS to the fact that the Redskins shutdown corner, Josh Norman, is officially OUT for Monday and their other starting corner, Breland, is questionable.

    • “Modestly” Huge Bears Penis

or he not score a lot of FF points with Philly so might as well sit him.

    • Irish Sweetness

Agholor is their main receiver, no?

  • AlbertInTucson

    Adieu, Yankees!

You score 3 runs in 4 games away from that damn softball porch in right field in Yankee Stadium.

    Go home.

    • SC Dave

      Yay!! Thank you, Astros!
