Watching the Tillman highlights is a little sad because all of those D characters and swagger are gone. It’s going to come back in a different form with youth and coaching but it’s tough to watch it end.

    • Swing Tackle of Destiny

Watching Tommie Harris highlights always makes one sad. He is Bear Metaphor player. Dude was only really dominant for a season and a half before his knee blowout made him a shell of who he was, but for that year and a half – he was on par with Reggie White.

      • MB30SD

        tomknee harris

      • You’re about to get Jericho’d

Harris was downright scary until his leg came off.

      • DaMurph

Reggie White? Youre kidding right? He wasnt even on par with Steve McMichael. Harris top sack year? 8 Reggies worst year was 8 late in his career. He was a ggod player but nowhere near any of the greats!

        • AlbertInTucson

          I disagree.

White was an end. Harris was a tackle.

Apples to Oranges when comparing an end’s sack totals to a tackle’s.

Harris was a beast in the middle until he tore up that leg.

The defense missed him as soon as he went out of the lineup.

          • DaMurph

I didnt make the original comparison to White. Harris was good but I cant put him with the elite tackles.

          • CanadaBear

Remember what a dope he was? He would say some of the dumbest shit and then get all butt hurt when people called him on it. Recover a fumble and give it up. But when he was healthy …

          • Doc Nitty

Agreed but he was not Reggie!

What all forms of fascism have in common is the glorification of the nation, and the exaggeration of its humiliations, with violence promised to its enemies, at home and abroad; the worship of power wherever it appears and whoever holds it; contempt for the rule of law and for reason; unashamed employment of repeated lies as a rhetorical strategy; and a promise of vengeance for those who feel themselves disempowered by history. It promises to turn back time and take no prisoners. That it can appeal to those who do not understand its consequences is doubtless true. But the first job of those who do understand is to state what those consequences invariably are. Those who think that the underlying institutions of American government are immunized against it fail to understand history. In every historical situation where a leader of Trump’s kind comes to power, normal safeguards collapse. – Adam Gopnick

    • You’re about to get Jericho’d

Fortunately Trump will never come to power but the fact that he got this far does say a lot about the state of the country, what it’s citizens think about whose fault it is, the lack of gov’t, personal and corporate accountability, etc.

The vast economic inequality that we are seeing is fostering this anger. Yet many of those who are angry wish only to lash out, to do damage “the others”. As if damaging the status quo would somehow bring about Armageddon.

      • willbest

Bernie wasn’t for changing the status quo. He was about increasing the wealth transfer within the current system. There was nothing genuinely scary about anything he proposed if you are already rich. Even if his policies weren’t DOA he was only going after income not wealth. You reduce people’s income and they will never get wealthy. That is an amazing situation to be in if you are already wealthy. No competition.

      • You’re about to get Jericho’d

I started typing but it doesn’t even matter. As long as we don’t require anyone to be held accountable for not being a productive part of society and we don’t hold them accountable for behaving like animals and we don’t hold companies accountable for breaking rules left and right and we don’t hold our leaders accountable for decades of incompetence then this is what we fucking get.

Fast forward to 2014. 6 of the 10 richest counties in America surround Washington. Los Alamos is also in the top 10. If I remember correctly, 12 of the 20 richest surround Washington. That’s some bullshit right there.

          • Sactowns#1

Yes, a pension that you work for is now considered “free money for life”. Who are these people?

          • CanadaBear

People who don’t have a defined pension.

You know, like almost everyone since 1980 in the US other than govt workers. It used to be govt jobs didn’t pay great but you had job security for life unless you killed a co-worker (even then I think you just got a warning). The pension wasn’t great but it was going to be there. Somewhere in the last 25-30 years the pay and the benefits kept getting better and better until govt jobs are the Holy Grail.

          • Sactowns#1

I think the pay and the benefits have stayed the same (or gotten worse. Googe the Public Employees Pension Reform Act) while the pay and the benefits in the private sector have gotten much worse. You gotta be able to pay those CEO’s hundreds of millions somehow.

          • CanadaBear

I don’t have an issue with them having a pension it’s the fact they have almost air tight job security, the pay is better than in the industry, the benefits are better than almost all other employers AND they have a pension. Of course, the downside is mgmt is so incredibly fucked up people hate working there.

The Bears aren’t necessarily off of 6-10.

IF you discount the 0-3 start as a John Fox “Shakedown Cruise”, they are really trying to turn things around from 6-7.

Of THOSE last 7 losses, only 2 were by more than 6 points including the 2 in O.T.

If the O-Line can be at least capable and Mssrs. White and Floyd perform like IMPACT first rounders, as opposed to just BEARS’, underachieving first rounders, then 10-6 is definitely do-able.

          • Doc Nitty

            YUGE!!!

To me the season hinges on the quality of play of the following young unknowns:

Is Kevin White the real deal? Is Floyd going to be an impact player? Is Langford a star? Is Amos the real deal? Is Whitehair a bad ass? I’m also very enamored with our rebuilt LB core, but having never played together, how well they gel is a big question mark.

If these players all play to expectations then the beloved will have added at least one impact player to almost every position group. How could this not account for a five win increase? If they turn out to be hype, third place in the North is all we’ll sniff.

          • Big Mike

The upgrade there is like nothing anybody on this board has ever seen before. To go from shit, to the real deal in one season for an entire unit doesn’t really happen that often.

I’m super excited about our entire front 7… praying we don’t have major injuries this year.

          • Concur.

Our schedule last year was TOUGH, esp at the start, Cutty hurt, and WR corp of guys you can’t even name anymore (not to mention a makeshift Oline and entirely new system)

This year, our schedule is softer. 2nd year. Talent upgrade. And gotta think that inj won’t be as handicapping, or least won’t hit one position group.

            Arrow pointing up.

            9 wins is DEF doable.

To me, it’s sorta just mental now. Bears gotta learn how to win again. How to finish.

I think that’s part of the reason POX wanted to bring in fresh meat. Fresh meat w/o loser mentality.

      • This is a team that’s won 11 games combined the last 2 years. They lost 3 of their 5 best offensive performers from last year.

I know they significantly upgraded the talent in the front 7, but that’s the only part of the team you can honestly say is better off right now vs. the start of camp last year. Maybe WR too, since Kevin White is healthy.

In a best-case scenario (good health and development of several key young players), they could reach 10-6. But people keep acting like that’s the expectation. It shouldn’t be.

        • To look at this another way: I cannot honestly look at NFCN rosters right now and think the Bears are anything better than the 3rd best team in the north, and even then I think they’re pretty even with Detroit, who has better defensive talent but worse offensive talent.

Of course, these things can always change as teams have young players emerge, injuries take a toll, and old players regress. Luck plays a huge role too in such a small sample size as a 16 game season.

But the Bears’ roster, on paper, is not one of the 12 best in the NFL, or 6 best in the NFC. Playoffs aren’t out of the question if things break right, but people acting like they should be expected need to take off the navy-tinted glasses.

          • CanadaBear

8-8. The D will be way better (although the back 4 (5 with nickel) is avg at best and probably less than that. The ST’s should be improved due to better team speed and they were on the rise in the last part of the season. The O is going to be interesting. I like the top 3 WR’s but 1 injury plagued TE and a bunch of guys is not inspiring. The RB by committee will be interesting to see play out but I’m more than a little concerned none of these guys are accomplished receivers. Not to mention everything I read about KW this year has been about the dropsies. All of this is a little unsettling and then you throw in a new OC. GULP.

          • I’m mostly worried about the OL. If they work out, the offense will be ok.

          • CanadaBear

I think the OL will be better than last year. I like Massie way more than you (although I’m not sure he’s all that) and think the Beloved will be able to run the ball better on the right side at least. It’s the RB’s in the pass game that is my biggest worry (with TE right behind). Have to laugh, most people outside this blog think Cutler is the problem. On here, hardly anyone goes there. It’s almost like the posters here actually think for themselves. What a concept!

          • Sactowns#1

That TE situation is really scary as is how thin we are at WR. But I have high hopes for this defense and am looking forward to the season!

          • CanadaBear

I don’t think the WR is all that thin. If KW pans out and AJ, ER and KW can stay healthy, it’s a good to really good unit. Granted that’s a big if but at some point the injury gods have to take a few days off at the WR position. If they don’t, Mariani looked decent at the end of last year, the PR guy has some sizzle and we have Braverman!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

          • AlbertInTucson

Besides being talented, those guys on ST’s loved playing for Toub and blocking for Devin.

Most explosive Bear since Gayle Sayers… and to those that favor The Windy City Flyer over The Kansas Comet on the thrill scale, I won’t debate it.

It was insane how we *expected* Devin to take it home.

Perhaps you have enough years left, but I never expect to see that again.

        • CanadaBear

Gale was equally dynamic. Different times for sure. However, Gale was just as good at RB as he was at returning. I was in my early teens when he and Butkus were rookies. ST’s were nowhere near as sophisticated back in the day and it seemed like Gale created more with less. Same as you, I’d never argue over Gale or Devin, just super happy they were both Bears.

      • Doc Nitty

Not only was he not able to CONCENTRATE on returns, but that LDL brain trust actually took him off punt returns! I mean…What the fuck?! That’s like telling Hendrix to put down the guitar for some songs so he can concentrate on his singing. Ludicrous!

So its hard to make sense of this. It seems like the guy who went on the shooting spree was born to Turkish parents in Germany. The translation of the exchange with him indicates he is a loon with a gun and it wasn’t a designed terrorist attack. The reports of a 2nd and 3rd shooter seem unconfirmed.

ISIS is celebrating but seems to have stopped short of taking credit for it.

      • But if Obama doesn’t label it a “radical muslim terrorist” attack, he’s considered a pussy by the right.

Doesn’t really make sense to label it that sometimes adding extra credence to the loon.

Like the Miami shooting. Guy was just a closeted fucktard wanting revenge. He would’ve shot them up if he were Hindu I think.

I call it the Joker effect. The Joker will naturally attract a certain type of personality to his “cause” but really they’re just nihilist or anarchists doing whatever the fuck they want regardless of laws or morals.

        Exhibit A.

Now, if this douchnozzle yelled “Allahu Akbar!” after his rampage, I’m sure Isis would’ve took credit, and the right would be screaming, “terrorists” but we have to learn to distinguish REAL terrorism from random mass violence.

Not sure of all the details from Munich, but we def must reserve terrorist attack for the truly worthy, like McVeigh or 9/11.

        • willbest

Um… No. The FBI actually said he was not a homosexual. I know you
want to believe the anonymous gay guy that said he topped him, but there
is zero evidence of that. Now they said he was juicing so you might get loon with a gun. But I personally am comfortable taking every lone wolf that racks up a double digit body count at their word.

I also give the benefit of the doubt to anything that involves more than 1 person and isn’t done for material gain (ie. turf war, robbery) or physical pleasure (ie. gang rape).

Incidentally, Noor Mateen has been disappeared down the memory hole. She is either in a CIA holding cell in a third world country or she has been placed in protective custody or quietly been granted resettlement to another country at this point since she has otherwise disappeared.

Trump is estimated at only 30 million from broadcast and cable, for his acceptance speech. Which is a signficant jump from Romney but down substantially from McCain. Although, in 2008 live streaming wasn’t all that much of a thing.

While I admit, seeing a handful of Cheetos that have passed through someone’s digestive track and been excreted actually talk is quite the novelty, I just couldn’t bring myself to listen to a talking turd brag about himself for over an hour. Sounds like not many others wanted to either.

So I should have an open mind, but not you eh?

    • BearDown100393

I’d rather pass a kidney stone.

    • I saw that speech. He seemed more mechanical than usual, no doubt trying to sound “presidential” while sticking to the teleprompter (something conservatives always made fun of Obama for).

It’s like he binge watched every post-apocalyptic movie ever made then wrote that speech…

Mad Max, Escape from L.A., Red Dawn (missing any?)

It was just brutal. Build a wall, keep them murdering wetbacks out even though studies have shown they commit less crimes cuz they don’t want to get deported. Oh, no, them dirty arabs (though they have no problem just flying over into buildings, much less smuggled in less dramatically).

Economy sucks (yes, let’s let another Rep recapture the glory of 2008!)

Middle East is a cluster fuck! (See, Bush, G.W.)

Cops are getting shot! (Only after they have been murdering minorities since forever. Surprised they didn’t get shot sooner).

I will fix everything in first 100 days! Everything, IMMEDIATELY in this insta-civilazation.

Nominate another Scalia cuz he was soooo popular.

Embrace the gays (NTTAWWT unless of course, you’re a Cruz Evangelical or Duck master hillbilly).

I did like how he talked about the working class, and his parents. I think that’s when he was most aunthentic, and on some level, I kinda believe he would actually try to change Wall St (but the other part of me suspects he’s just a con-man and will sell out the working man for a big pay day).

It was a very drab speech overall. But I don’t feel oppressed, or jones to get raptured, or bomb all Muslims, which is who he’s obviously targeting.

In some ways, he’s the last white hope, and I think many white folks see him as that before the country turns into a “mutt” nation.

But I’m not as pessimistic about white america as some others.

I know plenty of white working class folk who are his PRIME demo who can’t bring themselves to vote for that “NY blowhard”.

Still, I predict that Trump might win the general by a slim margin but naturally lose the electoral.

I could also envision ppl sobering up in the polling booth and secretly voting Hillary, in which case he’d get creamed, but who knows.

      • willbest

Trump outperforms his polling by about 2% when its secret ballot and under performs his polling by about that much when its open ballot. At least it was the case in the primaries.

I was kind of surprised at how many liberals said things like “My god,
this man is going to sound rational to low information voters.”

What is amusing to me, is that speech was really not much more than a coherent collection of what he has been saying on the stump. There is far more media hype around how controversial he is than he actually is. Trump has, to my knowledge never uttered a statement that wasn’t held by at least 45% of the country, except one, and he walked that back pretty quick.

So either 45% of the country really is evil and we are headed towards civil war, or the country (as it did in the early 1900’s) is going to enter a period of self-reflection.

        • What has he proposed specifically though?

The big one is the wall, and I don’t think 45% of americans wanted to build a 100 ft wall before he stumped for it. Gotta give Trump a lil “credit” for that.

Didn’t he believe Obama wasn’t American? Do 45% really buy that ?

Or that Cruz’ dad was involved in killing JFK?

I think it’s in how issues are worded. Is immigration a problem? I would say 45% agree.

Is Isis a problem? Of course.

Must we get more jobs, or solve the economic inequalities of globalism? Jes.

I don’t think Americans disagree on what the problems are, but on how to solve them, and I don’t think 45% agree with Trump’s solution, not even in his own party.

Then again, G.W. was elected TWICE, so never underestimate the stupidity of Americans. At least 45% couldn’t even locate Afghanistan on a map and only knew about them through “Rambo 2”

          • MB30SD

            Yup

          • willbest

Well the wall stands out to you, and yes 45% of this country wanted something dramatic done with the border. And they have for some time. They were supposed to build the wall in 1986 when they granted amnesty to illegals. Amnesty for illegals, border security going forward. As with everything the government does, the first got completed the last not so much.

The Dem’s cut a video of Paul Ryan throwing grandma off a cliff, do you
think 45% of the country believes he would do that? Campaign hyperbole.
And yes he ran the PR stunt where he demanded Obama’s birth certificate
and maybe his college transcripts, but in terms of what he plans to do
once President he hasn’t said anything that doesn’t have a lot of
            support.

My point is if you take any particular position he has, its mainstream. You might not like that its mainstream, and you certainly might disagree with that course of action, but you cannot claim he is taking an extreme position.

    • BearDown100393

It also shows the Democrats coordinated with various media organizations. And I was recently informed that this all can be trusted because it comes from WikiLeaks. Which means the Clinton campaign and the Democrats, NBC, MSNBC, WaPo, and several other organizations are in violation of about a dozen congressional statutes and a hundred FEC regulations.

Also not at all surprising. But it will be fun to watch the dems sputter about this for a couple days before going back to hating Trump.

    • Trump is right in his assessment of us Bernie supporters in our just as pissed off attitude about establishment.

However, Bernie’s vision of the future differs radically from Trump’s.

      • willbest

Bernie’s vision of the future is Venezuela. You might think we are smarter than that and can figure out how to get Sweden to work in the US. But you are wrong. At the end of the day everybody in Sweden is a Swede. That is why the system works (or did before they decided to change that). Meanwhile in the US we have Jon Stewart spouting off there is no real America (and people liking the crap out of it on my FB feed).

        • AlbertInTucson

“Jon Stewart spouting off there is no real America.” AND that America was never great.

        • Cormonster

I read parts of an interesting study recently out of Sweden comparing EU countries to the US. Based off per capita GDP, if Denmark were a US state it would be the 10th poorest, Sweden would be the 7th poorest, and Finland would be the 5th poorest.

          • Yes, but Cali, perhaps the most “socialist” of all states is like what, 5th largest economy in the world?

Thus america + socialism = win.

            edit.

          • Also, we’re already socialist. Just need to make it better and not half-assed like bailing out the corporations when capitalism fails.

          • Cormonster

Totally agree on the bailouts. Probably the most pissed I’ve ever been over any political issue.

          • Irish Sweetness

But the standard of living and what you get off the state in Sweden would make the USA look like a third world country. Prisons there are like holiday camps. Finns have one of the best schooling systems on the planet.

            And Scandinavian chicks are hot

          • willbest

You can get the US PISA scores broken down by race and ethnicity. Asian-Americans do better than every Asian country except the one that cheats, Hispanic-Americans do better than every Hispanic country, white Americans do as good the Scandinavian country. And African-Americans would probably do better than every African country if they bothered to test there.

The problem isn’t the US school system. The problem is the retarded number of single parent families. And no amount of money thrown at our schools will ever overcome that. Its the same problem we are having with the police. They are being asked to clean up a mess well outside the scope of their job description.

Do you get to make sure they’re actually girls before hiring them?

  • I answered a question below about paying players on a one-day contract and said they don’t get paid. Then I realized I didn’t actually know that, so I looked it up.

Turns out it’s a legal contract entitling them to 1 days’ pro-rated wages at the minimum NFL salary. But there’s a stipulation in the NFL CBA that the money doesn’t actually get paid.

But… it is a legal contract. It goes on the NFL record book, has to be signed by both parties to count, and has to get faxed to the league office. You need to free a roster spot for that one day to make it valid.

Kind of random but interesting. The more you know.

    http://deadspin.com/5836681/fred-taylor-retires-a-jaguar-but-how-much-does-his-one-day-contract-pay

    • You’re about to get Jericho’d

they had to release Omar Bolden in order to sign him.

    • willbest

Originally, I thought it was pretty F’d up that the NFL requires the roster spot, and the NFLPA doesn’t require the pay. But then I realized it was only about $3000 and if the Bears actually paid Tillman he would end up having to file an IL tax return and between the taxes and accounting costs he could even lose money. But it could at least be donated to a charity of the players choice or something.

The other problem is that when the Bears clear a roster spot for him that player ends up missing out on a days pay. Which seems like a douche move to a guy that isn’t going to make the team anyway and is counting on that money to supplement his income from working at a moving company or whatever he is doing.

      • in the offseason, players don’t get paid. So I don’t think that impacts it at all. Also, their roster was already at only 89, so they didn’t have to cut anybody (cutting Bolden was not related, he and the G they signed from Carolina swapped roster spots).

Not really understanding the Tim Kaine pick. I guess if she went with Booker or Castro or Warren or even Bernie they would outshine her, and her ego wouldn’t be able to handle it. Go with the boring white guy so she can be the specialist of the special on the ticket, even if her base is desperate for some energy or excitement. Between that and DNCLeaks its a very know your place peasants, pick.

I know they will try to paint Kaine as center left, but the guy’s voting scores clearly indicate he is a reliable foot soldier of the left. https://votesmart.org/candidate/evaluations/50772/tim-kaine . Not really surprising since both parties have pretty much purged anybody that resembles a moderate thanks to gerrymandering.

Incidentally though, its not just that we are getting gerrymander and that computers make it easier, it is that we are getting easier to gerrymander because we are sorting ourselves by neighborhood politically more than we have ever done before.

Anyway, back to Kaine. Now if you need a boring white guy, I am surprised you go with Tim Kaine. He is quite popular in VA which is an important state on the battleground map, but one the Dems shouldn’t really have any problem winning. Twenty years of record growth among the parasite class in DC has spilled into NoVA and should have made VA safe by now. I would think a boring PA or OH white guy might be a better choice.

Intern gives a patient pain killer. Several times because the guy kept complaining he was still in great pain. When the charge nurse finds out the number doses administered, her reaction was “He’ll GORK !”

They save the patient but the already unstable and now overwhelmed-by-guilt intern goes off and commits suicide.

They also used it at least once on TV’s E.R.

It can take between $600,000 and 2 million and upwards of 10 years to execute somebody. Basically, the way the US judicial system is setup a minority of people can assert their will over the majority by engaging in a lawfare veto. They make it too expensive to execute somebody.

I am not saying it was the whole reason, but I suspect it did cross the Dallas chief’s mind when he authorized the bomb bot.

Its not the only area where it happens. Environmental regulations are also abused in this manner. I have seen them used to beat down a brewery who gave up and looked elsewhere. Not exactly a big offender in terms of environmental impact.

Reportedly Sale told management that the 1970 throwback uniforms were not comfortable and he proceeded to cut them all up so the Sox could not wear them tonight, when he was scheduled to start. If this is a choice between Chris Sale and team president, Kenny Williams., I’m for keeping Sale.

    https://www.facebook.com/topic/Chris-Sale/109239899103125?source=whfrt&position=1&trqid=6310717708869718381

    • Chris Sale to Cubs for Kyle Schwarber, Jorge Soler, and Eloy Jimenez (their top prospect in the minors, only 19 but will be a top 10 prospect in baseball next time lists are released). Both teams get better.

More realistic: Quintana to Cubs for Schwarber and Soler or Jimenez. Sox get 2 much-needed bats and still have Sale/Rodon/Fulmer as pitchers to build around. Cubs get a quality starter for now and the future (they only have Lester and Hendricks under contract past next year from their current rotation).

      • AlbertInTucson

I don’t see the Sox letting Sale go across town.

Schwarber DOES have DH written over him.

        • CanadaBear

Totally agree about Schwarbs being a DH but he can be a serviceable LF’er with more work. He’s certainly no worse than Kingman, Keith Moreland, George Foster or Luzinski. Not sure if he ever pans out at catcher.

      • willbest

They need to keep Schwarber until my kid outgrows his jersey.

      • DaMurph

Not enough for Sale, but I do that deal for Quintana.

    • CanadaBear

Is Sale kind of a loon? I know he’s a great pitcher but cutting up uniforms because you don’t want to wear them sounds like something a 10 year-old would do.

      • AlbertInTucson

I feel his frustration. Baseball unis don’t have sportshirt collars. These did. He said it bothered him to pitch in it.

Why not just tell him , “Put this stone in your left shoe and go out and pitch with that? Oh, and by the way, can you give 9 innings of 1-hit shutout ball this time because the 8 you gave us Monday wasn’t good enough to win.”

Management’s stance says “How dare you complain. Mediocre is OK if we can sell another jersey.”

The fact that Robin Ventura is still calling the shots on the field says it all.

        • CanadaBear

I get his frustration but cutting up uniforms? Who would you want to replace Ventura? I don’t follow the Sox much. With a more aggressive mgr would this team respond? Any chance KW trades Sale if someone kills them with a pkg? Would the fan base look at that as another white flag trade scandal like back in the day?

          • DaMurph

Ventura lacks a way to motivate. Replace him with a known entity that can motivate a team. I think they would trade him for a killer deal of 5+ sure thing top notch prospects. Sale is a pitcher that comes along once a decade. Ill be pissed if they trade him.

          • CanadaBear

Totally agree but KW can be a hot head. I get teams featuring the throwbacks to make money but who in their right mind would buy the throwbacks that Sale cut up?

          • AlbertInTucson

I think this incident makes it a “buyer’s market’ for Sale and they’d get a better price in the the off-season when more teams think they’re contenders.

As for Ventura, I fire him just to send a message.

Besides, he’s under-achieved for 3, and now going on 4, straight seasons.

Closer or, no, I am not leaving ANYBODY in the game to give up a 3rd straight, 2 out tater in the 9th to tie the game.

The last 2 he gave up were were to guys that were WAY below “The Medoza Line” (Both around .170) with “1 & 2” counts.

The white amazon broad that kicks ass (because we need broads that fight, that is the new thing now) she is hold up in a crashed starship that used to be the command of the bad guy. Who was a good black dude who sucked the life out of other people and became WHITE (I think he’s a metaphor for Herman Cain and Ben Carson) and he used to be the captain of that ship.

The ship was in a repairable enough state that one CHICK repaired it so it could fly again, but he could not. And she cloaks it so it cannot be seen. Did he FORGET it was up there?

In the end, Spock figures out that they can disrupt the swarm by blasting the Beasties over 57. 1 Mhz in the VHF band. What is the significance of that frequency? It’s the frequency of channel 2, CBS, in New York and Chicago and many major cities around the country. CBS is bringing Star Trek back to the “airwaves” this fall. There’s your obligatory JJ Abrams analog joke there. Forget the fact that aliens are using VHF, whose main properties is the VERY LOW distances it travels (CBS was always the hardest channel to pick up in the 70s and 80s) and is primarily used for wireless microphones at concerts as well (possibly another reason it was chosen).

But the fact the chick is hiding in the old guys ship and cloaks it, and he does NOT NOTICE it is not there anymore, is just too stupid.

Also, they fly through a nebula to get to this hidden planet, but the backside of the nebula is OPEN SPACE. They could have GONE AROUND THE CLOUD.. Ugh.

    — Nerd shit off.

    • willbest

It happens often enough that I am convinced the laws of the star trek universe prevent significant Z-axis movement. Like there was a TNG episode where they form up a blockade to detect cloaked ships. And other things that they are forced to go through because it would supposedly take to long to go around but when they cut to the visual its like um… why not go over or under it.

Anyway, I heard they made Sulu gay and that George Takei wasn’t happy about that.

      • AlbertInTucson

Movement on the “Z” was how they fooled Khan iin STAR TREK II

      • Irish Sweetness

The Romulan episode where Data took command of a ship and had a snotty second-in-command? That was a great one. But they weren’t forming a wall. There would be a sphere of detection around each ship, so you couldn’t go ‘over the wall’. They created a big net.

        • willbest

You are going to make me pull it up on Netflix, but I am pretty sure it was a giant 2 dimensional shape. And they only had like 30 star ships. So it shouldn’t have taken more than about 2 hours to go around at warp 9

    • Irish Sweetness

Haven’t seen it yet, but Sulu having a partner AND A CHILD really pissed in my coffee – these are supposed to be family films. That and Abrams even considering killing off Chekhov with deference to Anton Yelchin …. when Chekhov lives to be an old man in the original films …..

Bernie’s supporters deserve the opportunity to boo you off the stage like a bad vaudeville act.

    • willbest

If it makes them feel better Hillary probably won’t be calling the shots in the WH. Maybe the DNC is just using her to get President Kaine installed.

      • beninnorcal

But that doesn’t make me feel better.

    • willbest

And now she has resigned. No doubt this disgrace will force her to become a recluse where she will lay awake at night wondering how she ended up down that dark path… or she will end up with a 6-figure consulting job for one of the Clinton Foundation partners and laugh at all the little people when she attends all the A-list cocktail parties.

      • SC Dave

        Definitely the latter.

        • MB30SD

          Yup

        • AlbertInTucson

          Oh, for SURE!

      • AlbertInTucson

The resignation no doubt to preclude the completely disenfranchised BernieBackers from taking a giant crap, in the form of a massive demonstration on the convention floor on opening night.

    • willbest

Paid CNN political commentator Donna Brazile has been tapped as interim chair of the DNC. Apparently it was too much to ask that the person tapped to replace DWS not be in bed with the same media the DNC conspired with to do in Bernie Sanders.

Well spent a few days in Portland this last week. Spent a couple days boating on the rivers. Columbia one day a Willamette another. Its a beautiful city. Unfortunately my Jeep got broke into one night. Bastard got away with my ipod and a few other electronics. More pissed at myself for leaving the shit in the Jeep but I forgot they were there. I decided to start on my way back home bypassing the Pacific Coast Highway this year, just tired of being on the road, 3 weeks is a long fricken time. My brother is getting married next year so I decided to fly out to Portland next year for that and then rent a car and continue the trip then. On way back I drove through 2 dust storms, one in SE Oregon and the other in Wyoming, That is some freaky ass shit. Luckily I only had to drive through the edges of the storms. Pretty sure i would not have been able to drive if I was in the middle.

Driving through Wyoming I actually found the “Middle of Nowhere”. I pulled over to get gas. Took an interstate exit(no town name just an exit number on the sign) and it lead to a gravel road leading to a gas station, nothing else. In front of the station was an old wooden sign that read “NoWhere, Middle of”. It was 50 miles from the nearest actual town. This gas station had chickens, llamas, donkeys, and horses in a rickety pen right next to the pumps. The station was extremely run down with a shack out back. The first thing that came to mind was that this was exactly how some horror stories about serial killers usually starts. Went in the station and it was like walking back in time almost like an old fashion drug store/trading post type feeling to the place. This place had the old fashion candies and an old fashion soda fountain. Started talking to the lady running the place, turns out that 2 families run the station. One family lives 10 miles north down the gravel road and can access the station fairly easily. The lady working, on the other hand, lives south 10 miles away on the other side of a nearby ridge. The only way her and her husband can get to the station is by riding horse back via trail, and that is literally the only access to modern society. She works three days a week and stays in the shack out back during those 3 days, and the other family works the other 4 days.

Got caught up in a hail storm in Nebraska, ping pong sized hail forced me to stay under an overpass for a while to let the storm ease up. I wasn’t looking forward to driving through Nebraska since everyone that I talked to said it is one of the worst drives in the world. I must be the only person that actually enjoys driving through that state.

I got home late last night, great trip, met some weird and interesting people, and saw some amazing things, glad I took it.

    • CanadaBear

Just don’t drive across Nebraska late at night if you’re tired. Sucks about the break in. Bastards! Love the story about WY gas station. WY and ID are really interesting states. I’ve ridden across both of them a few times and people are genuinely nice if you don’t act like a jackass. Not to mention the varied terrain in both states.

      • Huge Bear’s Penis

I think I enjoyed Nebraska for the simple fact that the roads were straight. After spending a week or so in mountainous regions, shifting up and down more times than I can count and seemingly endless number of curves. It was relaxing just driving straight. I would agree about WY and ID, and the people. I am very introverted by nature, so one of the things I forced myself to do this trip was to talk to everyone. Find out a little about them no matter how insignificant, whether it was the old couple celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary, I sat down next to on a bench in front Mount Rushmore, to the young couple Chris and Jen I met on the “Going to the Sun Road” on their honeymoon, or the biker from Kentucky I had a conversation in Nebraska while going 75mph down the interstate, yelling back and forth to each other.

        • MB30SD

          Awesome.

When you boil it all down and strip out all the shit that really doesn’t matter, that’s all there really is… human connection.

          • SC Dave

            So this, MB. Amen.

        • beninnorcal

          Sounds like a movie.

          • Huge Bear’s Penis

slightly smarter version of Forrest Gump, driving across America instead of running, talking to and helping strangers along the way?

    • MB30SD

      Well done lad!

      hhmmpphh! fucking llamas. SMH

    • Scharfinator

Sounds like a sweet ass trip!

    • beninnorcal

Nice trip, HBP. Here in SF, leaving anything at all in your car is just asking for it. Property crime has gotten way worse over the last few years. Broken glass on pretty much every block most of the time. It’s fucking bullshit.

  • MB30SD

    DUDE!

Hackers was offered up to me on amazon prime. I watched it back in the day, but HOLY SHIT!!

You MUST all watch this…. especially you GP. You will appreciate. so so sooo much 80s win!

…and they should have named it “Hackerz”

    • MB30SD

OMG, this just gets better and better…. the visualizations are hilarious.

…oh, and a VERY young Angelina Jolie is in this fucking thing.

      • Swing Tackle of Destiny

I liked her topless scene in pushing tin.

Pushing Tin is a stupid movie, but that was a good scene.

        • Irish Sweetness

That’s where she fell in love with Sling-blade. I liked that movie. Got me a Jones for Cusack and Billy Bob.

    • willbest

You mean 20-year old Jolie side-boob?

The computer science students at Purdue used to show that movie every few months and we would get together and laugh at how ridiculous it was while playing drinking games to it.

      • MB30SD

        the outfits are AMAZING.

…um, there was more than sideboob. They showed like full-on mesh top, double nipples I didn’t know how to feel about it. Too young for me.

        • willbest

As long as they are done cooking.

        • DaMurph

          Youd still “hoodle” em!

          • MB30SD

20 is too young. 23 and up, I’m all in… literally. Hee hee

          • DaMurph

I said the same thing until that 19 year old said “I like me some grampa”

          • MB30SD

            hahaha

          • AlbertInTucson

            Did you say “Hoodle” ?

      • Irish Sweetness

I hate the meme that there are sexy girl hackers in existence. Anyone see the ‘The Strain’? Botoxed British-accented twat breaks the Internet. Yeah right.

Her thing was not closing the italics tags on blogs …..

        • willbest

          I have met 1 female hacker above a 6, and she was a 7

  • Swing Tackle of Destiny

    MB & Waffle –

Speaking of lovely red nipples, at about a minute and a half in, those red Weber carbs, I got a boner. Not sure what did it, the visuals or the sound it makes when he drops the hammer merging on the Autobahn.

    • MB30SD

      Man that thing sounds beautiful.

Gp, still planning on the concourso next summer for my dad, you should come and bring the lad

      • Swing Tackle of Destiny

        sounds fun.

    • You’re about to get Jericho’d

      holy shit.

  • willbest

Pickles is working out in Detroit this week sometime.

    • MB30SD

      DOOOOOOOON’T CAAAAAAAARE!!

      • AlbertInTucson

Was the film/video of his “performance” in Seattle last year unavailable to the Lions?

  • AlbertInTucson

If I’m a Sanders backer, I tell the DNC,

“Debbie’s resignation is an ADMISSION that the nomination process was corrupted, ergo, NULL and VOID. We want Bernie’s name placed in nomination and any and all delegates released from prior commitments!”

    • Cormonster

How ironic that the DNC power brokers have built a 4 mile, 8 foot wall around the Wells Fargo Center to keep other Democrats from getting too close to them or the proceedings. Monica Lewinsky’s ex-boyfriends wife certainly is a women of the people.

      • AlbertInTucson

        Exactly.

“No wall to protect our border but when it comes to us, that’s DIFFERENT”.

    • willbest

No, if you are a Sanders backer you will do as you are told peasant because Trump is dark. Its a nice life lesson for the Bernie supporters (under 30 white folks) though.
