Three Thoughts To Get the Ball Rolling

| August 8th, 2016

Today, unofficially, begins the 2016 season. There is a “game” this week. Big injuries have already altered the game plan. August feels like it just got started and will end any day now.

Three thoughts to start things…

SLAUSON SHOULD BE HERE

I tweeted about it this weekend while on mini-vacation and incessantly when the move initially happened. Matt Slauson being let out the door was one of the most foolish moves of the Ryan Pace/John Fox era. Why?

  • Slauson was cheap.
  • Slauson covered three positions.
  • Slauson was a leader and great locker room guy.
  • Injuries are too commonplace, especially along the offensive line. In a league of teams STARVING for quality depth, the Bears essentially passed on having a tremendous depth on one of their most problematic units.

Now that Grasu is done, the Bears have a question mark at center. And I keep arguing, for years at this point, center is the most underrated position on the entire roster.

I LIKE THE FIGHTING

If you think teams fighting in training camp is an issue, I get it. But since the Bears are only a season removed from the 2014’s heartless, soulless, gutless, passionless, lifeless performance…I’m willing to say punch away.

FREEMAN / TREVATHAN WILL CHANGE THE TEAM

Here is the sentence you need to read:

The Chicago Bears middle linebackers will be the most improved unit in the entirety of the NFL.

In the last thread was a link to the dead spin article on why the Bears suck. My favorite part was in the comments, about our last 15 years of drafting:

“All of the methadone in the world cannot beat the rush of drafting pre-injured players.”

    Awesome.

That was about the only part of the article that I liked. That was a great line!

“The Chicago Bears middle linebackers will be the most improved unit in the entirety of the NFL.”

Agree 100%, but that’s not hard when you had a spastic moron and a fucking Lowe’s garden hose specialist last year. Jesus fucking christ.

I’m getting worried about McPhee. Months after getting his knee scoped he’s still on PUP. If it was a routine issue he should have been back at least a month ago. Not good.

It would be traditional right now for me to insist that the β€˜85ers could get away with murder, but it’s worse than that. If they ran for public office, they could win in a landslide and easily push through a bill that legalized murder. This is a group of fans that let Mike Ditka become the eternal face of the team. Ditka is nothing more than Donald Trump, Sports Edition.

And by 4rth I mean Grasu.

  • Cowboys shopping for a solid backup.

Their OG Leary also looking to get traded (Leary was ranked like #2 in run game).

Maybe we should trade Hoyer for Leary straight up?

If Cutty goes down, we’re likely fucked anyways.

    • willbest

If Amos is legit and Porter has another solid season, our D should be able to carry us over the bad to mediocre teams so long as Cutler hurries back from the 2 concussions and groin injury he is going to sustain playing behind that O-line.

      • MB30SD

Don’t forget alshon… year-long hammy? Or are we switching it up this year?

        • AlbertInTucson

          Life-long?

            So, “Bearl-Long”.

    • AlbertInTucson

Backup QB’s who took over for injured starters and didn’t suck:

      #1 with a bullet – Kurt Warner.

      George Blanda

      Earl Morrall.

      Jeff Hostetler.

Tobin Rote- Bobby Layne broke his ankle in the next to last game of the 1957 season. Rote then led Loins to an NFL title including a huge comeback playoff game win and an absolute drubbing of the Browns in the title game.

      Frank Reich.

      Don Strock.

That’s all I have off the top of my head for now.

      • To paraphrase Lloyd Bentsen , “I have seen Hoyer. I have worked with Hoyer. I consider Hoyer a friend. He sir, is no Kurt Warner”

        • AlbertInTucson

George Halas cut Blanda in the late 50s.

  • Warms your cackles. Your Cutty cackles…

Ted Larsen is getting the first crack at replacing Hroniss Grasu (knee) as the Bears’ starting center.

Larsen took his first reps at the pivot with Jay Cutler andthe first-team offense Monday. According to beat writer Brad Biggs, Larsen wasn’t particularly impressive, getting beaten by ILB Jerrell Freeman for a sack and then pushed around by NT Eddie Goldman. Making 12 starts at guard for the Cardinals last season, Larsen was PFF’s No. 77 guard out of 82 qualifiers. – Roto

      Yeesh..

    • MB30SD

      ouch

    • CanadaBear

There’s a reason he’s involved in a majority of the fights this summer. Pretty sure he’s going to suck moose wang. Whitehair might be the C sooner than we think.

      • and then who’s going to play LG? All their depth this offseason was either cut or retired.

I figured cutting Slauson would come back to bite them in the ass at some point this year, I just figured it would take a little longer than this.

        • CanadaBear

Totally agree about lack of foresight but I think C is more important than LG. When I read that Larsen was getting steamrolled in practice I just can’t imagine that can continue without some changes. Either way, not good. With Alshon, Royal, Miller and Q dinged up or worse, Forte gone, Black Uni gone (glad he’s gone but …) and the OL in total flux and Gase is gone … Need I go on? Starting out looking pretty shaky to say the least. The D and ST’s aren’t going to be that good to make up for the O. Esp since the O seem intent on 3 yds and a cloud of dust.

          • Big Mike

Losing interest before the season starts.

          • CanadaBear

Not really. I go from optimistic to pessimistic all the time in preseason because I really have no idea what to expect. As the season progresses I hone into either being optimistic or not. I’m just kinda worn out by the last few years of bad hires, bad drafts, bad signings, tons of injuries and a dash of old-fashioned bad luck. Usually the Cubs have worn me down by now so I’m a little more upbeat about the Bears chances.

          • Big Mike

I was referring to myself. I get so frustrated with soft tissue issues.

          • CanadaBear

Sorry. Being a Bears fan ain’t for the faint of heart. Between all the team issues, some of the dumbest fans around and about half the media in town taking cheap shots at them year round, it wears you out.

          • Big Mike

Truth Bomb… Listening to all of this, you’d get the impression it would be a miracle if the Bears can even field a team.

          • on the plus side, 7 years in Chicago has made Cutler very experienced at playing behind a shitty OL.

        • Do you know what the Cowgirls want for Leary?

I read that the Saints were trying to get him but Cowboys didn’t like their offer, but I don’t know what they were offering.

I think POX is waiting for first cuts to see if anything pops up in the junkyard before making a move, but I think it’s getting to emergency level right now.

We might have to waist a 4rth-5th to get him, but that’s the price they have to pay for letting Slauson go.

          • They just activated that former OG they signed from Carolina, probably a combo of wanting to see what he looks like and who gets cut.

I can’t imagine how shitty the 2nd string OL is gonna be in preseason though. Between Grasu injury/Larsen promotion and the retirements, the entire interior 2nd string OL is now either starting or gone, so 3rd stringers are playing 2nd string. Brian Hoyer is gonna get killed, and the backup RBs are all gonna look like shit trying to run behind that.

  • Cormonster

If the Bears want to reduce soft tissue injuries, maybe they should start using cupping as a treatment, preferably while wearing a magnetized copper bracelet.

    • MB30SD

      I heard this works WONDERS!

      • Cormonster

You guys watch Mr. Robot? Elliot tries to hack the FBI using an Android vulnerability after reading about how agents switched from Blackberry to Android.

    1. That’s a real story – agents did switch
    2. There’s today’s story:

    https://www.wired.com/2016/08/quadroot-android-vulnerability-qualcomm/

The show does a good job of living in it’s own reality and having it’s own David Fincher inspired visual style. Ok, it’s basically just mimic’ing Fincher outright. And the story is contrived and derivative of what happened to Lulzsec and with Anon. But it’s Hamlet inspired ghost haunting combined with the weirdness of the underground movement, and setting it in New York and having a Lloyd Blankenfeld wannabe involved, it’s pretty amusing overall and tries REALLY hard to get the tech right.

Yes well the Japanese are notoriously racist. Of course they can’t win. I read an article by a black man that said he had to stop playing Pokemon Go because it was going to get him shot wandering around behind buildings and the like.

Anyway, it also discriminates against rural communities too. So it only likes cultured white people. I suppose that makes sense given that is the group most likely to play it. Sort of a make the game fun for the people with disposable income and spend money on however they generate revenue.

The locations are based off of the locations they obtained when they purchased another application so Nintendo didn’t really decide anything. It was all data from somewhere else.

Sure, but they made the decision on what data set to buy. Now maybe it was the only one around that met their technical needs, but then they could have hired people to augment it.

Personally I don’t really care how private companies conduct their business. If it maximizes your bottom line to target wealthy white neighborhoods so be it. It works for Costco, Starbucks, Whole Foods, Mercedes, etc.

        • Huge Bear’s Penis

Pokemon Go is owned by Niantic. It was developed in partnership with Nintendo. Niantic was an internal startup company of Google. They spun off from Google last year when Google restructured. Pokemon Go is based on Niantic’s proof on concept game they created called ‘Ingress’. All the “Pokestops” and crap were imported into the Pokemon Go game from Ingress. When Ingress was initially create the only locations in the game were mainly government buildings (libraries/court houses/firestations/police station/train stations etc.). Ingress allowed players to submit locations to be created as Portals within the game, the Portals in Ingress are the same as Pokestops. So all the locations in Pokemon Go were originally submitted by the players of Ingress. The player submissions were reviewed and sometimes rejected by Niantic. So if no Ingress players made submissions for locations in an area then there would not be any locations in the “new” Pokemon game. I am assuming Niantic at some point reopen the location submission functionality to increase game play.

FYI, I don’t play the game, but a couple of my friends were big into playing the original Ingress and they quickly noticed that Pokemon Go was basically the same game with a better UI.

          • SC Dave

You know waaay too much about that shit

That game is all a couple of my friends would talk about when we would go out drinking. So unfortunately I learned a lot. I have quit drinking with those guys for a little over a week now because that’s all they talk about. I figured i would wait a little while to let them calm down about the game before drinking with them again.

          • Wow. Maybe I’m getting old or something cuz I can’t imagine me and my buds talking about Pokemon Go.

But, it’s not as if we sit around smoking a pipe discussing macro-economics or anything.

We talk about just as juvenile shit, just not PokeGo.

It’s definitely a diff world. My nephews sometimes just sit in front of the computer and watch others play videogames (when they’re not playing themselves).

I subscribe to GamersPro and the new trend on platforms will be Virtual Reality (VR). Supposedly Sony and a few others are gonna make strong pushes in that tech soon.

    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2016/08/09/bears-coach-john-fox-grass-isnt-always-greener-or-the-problem/#comments

Can the Bears get out of the Parks and Recreation contract with Chi?

I know Heinz field is almost as crappy, but I don’t know if they have as many torn ACLs as we seemingly do.

    • Big Mike

Why is the Soldier’s rated near the bottom? How much of this is legacy bullshit, like “the Bears are cheap”. I’ve walked the field before and it was as pristine as any I’ve ever been on. It degrades in cold weather, that is a fact. Having concerts and bullshit on it during the NFL season is just stupid. But in August-October. Who is the judge? The skills guys like the fast track of field turf. But I will guarantee you, as someone who spends most of his free time on field turf from August-November, it is hell on your knees, hips, legs. (or maybe that’s me getting old…).

Putting this on CPD isn’t fair either. They do what the Bears tell them to. The best compromise to date, seems to be the stuff they put in for the Vikings. It’s called UBU Series 5 or something like that.

      • CanadaBear

As far as I know, the McCaskey’s insist on real grass because they feel it is safer for the players. It’s easier on their bodies for sure but when it’s torn to bits or resurfaced in the last half of the season, who knows? I’ve always thought it was a home field advantage because it seems to get into some of the opponents heads.

        • willbest

            That shit sucks

          • Bears must have the worst homefield advantage in the league.

I think they have more of an advantage on the road when the diaspora makes its presence known, esp in weaker markets.

          • CanadaBear

The Bears haven’t been taking advantage of their home field advantage!

        • Big Mike

So, as I said not fair to put in on the CPD, also Field Turf is far less expensive. There’s a hit up front, but maintenance is next to nothing. It has a life cycle of 8 years. Even replacing it every 5 produces a great ROI. So it’s not the $. Studies and anecdotal evidence show that grass is better for player safety and career longevity.

      • SC Dave

The “other events” bs is the problem. But unlike most franchises, the Bears have the class to not take their hosts hostage over fields and stadiums.

    • Huge Bear’s Penis

It is sad that the turf at Soldier Field is so pitiful, especially when you see the turf at Lambeau in the mid winter. I always wandered how Green Bay’s field seemed to be in better condition longer into the winter. I did a quick search and found this interesting article on how they do it. Maybe the Park district should read it and take some notes.

      http://gizmodo.com/heres-how-lambeau-field-keeps-its-grass-green-in-the-d-1442008641

on a side note i am pretty sure GB doesn’t allow as many events on the field as Chicago does either.

      • That’s what I was guessing. Don’t think Wisc is a hub of concerts and civic activities.

        • Cormonster

Alpine Valley is the second largest amphitheater in the US and holds about 40,000 people. I grew up about 45 minutes away and seen tons of great acts there. It was one of the Grateful Deads favorite venues and where they did their first set of shows after Jerry Garcia died. The Pearl Jam 20 reunion shows were also there.

Summerfest in Milwaukee is an 11 day music festival with over 800 bands. There’s live music of every genre going on all day and night with about 10 different stages.

I live between Madison and Minneapolis in a city with about 50,000. I think you would be amazed at the local music scene if you ever visited the area. There are tons of great local and regional acts that swing through the area. I’ve probably seen 40-50 good to great local and regional bands just in the last year.

That said, Green Bay is a shit-hole and the music scene in that area sucks. But I did see Metallica and Queensryche at the old Packers Hall of Fame back in the day.

          • Were u a deadhead, Corm!?

Haha, heard so many stories about those.

My pal used to trade acid for all kinds of shit at those events. He had the liquid form.

Needless to say, plenty of barterers lol

          • Cormonster

I wouldn’t consider myself a Deadhead, but I do hang around with quite a few and partook in a lot of psychedelics back in the day. Used to buy the eye droppers full of liquid. I used to go hang out at Dead shows but never went in when I was younger. It was quite the culture shock going to my first show back in the late 80’s. I kind of regretted it later because I do like a lot of the music. I’ve seen a lot of dead offshoots since the mid 90’s like The Other Ones, The Dead, Phil and Friends, and Furthur. I’ve got quite a few crazy stories from some of the shit that happened at those shows.

            Hey Sac –

Today he said that gun owners should revolt in the streets if the 2nd amendment is impugned. Basically, a call to arms.

            That is today’s crazy.

          • I find his admiration of Putin disturbing.

He’s already ginning up the rubes with the “If I lose the vote is rigged” claptrap. He’s creating an environment where people will feel it’s ok to opening talk about shooting the next president or other elected officials if votes don’t come out the way they want. In that environment it’s only a matter of time. He’s a dangerous man but even when he loses and disappears his followers will still be out there, among us.

          • willbest

No… Dems are doing a solid one of that on their own

            http://jackontheweb.cbslocal.com/2016/07/27/black-air-force-veteran-from-cleveland-shot-for-supporting-trump/

After all, gotta shoot the hitler supporters

          • Sactowns#1

Wait… a guy got shot in a bar?! Oh well that’s just like someone running for president talking about people that need to get roughed up or paying for the defense of violent criminals. Totally the same thing.

          • willbest

Just pointing out that a guy felt comfortable enough shooting a Trump supporter out of malice. It was the interrupting another person’s conversation and having to go to the car and get the gun that tells you that.

The environment was created by the Dem’s. I know you don’t want to see it, but its pretty obvious to those of us that have no personal investment in the outcome of this election.

          • Sactowns#1

Hu? Have you seen the Trump rallies, the violence, the hate being spewed by the candidate? I don’t think you’re dealing in reality.

          • willbest

You haven’t apparently. I think you need to put the MSNBC soundbites down, and go to one.

          • Sactowns#1

I haven’t had cable or satellite for 5+ years. (I stream NFL Sunday ticket through my laptop and hook it up to my TV) I’ve just been paying attention to what Trump says as well as the Trumpaloompas. Have you seen any protesters punched, kicked or choked at a Clinton or Bernie rally? Dude you have one side saying “lets all live in harmony and love one another” and another guy saying Muslims, Mexicans and Philippinos aren’t welcome. I cant help you Will unless you really want to be helped.

          • willbest

Sac… I don’t know what to say. Trump supporters are getting attacked at Trump rallies by protestors. You have some video from 6 months ago of a guy getting sucker punched by a black Trump supporter because his GF was wearing a KKK hood. I have dozens of videos where dems are out there rioting. The violence goes 30 to 1 against Trump supporters. And in a few cases the police even abandoned their job.

Trump supporters don’t put out yard signs and bumper stickers because their property gets vandalized (though that was happening with Romney too), but its even worse now.

Your side is not “lets live in harmony” its “You live the way we say, or we will attack you”. That you don’t want to admit it shows how far gone you are.

But lets talk about tolerance and inclusivity.

Hillary allowed a Taliban supporting, homosexual hating father of a terrorist into her VIP section really drives home the we are all in it together mentality. I guess that is pretty sporting of the LBGTQ or feminist community to not find that at all offensive. Or it just might be an indication that this week Muslims outrank the other victim groups in the DNC hierarchy. I don’t know.

Meanwhile, Trump goes into the RNC and gets them to cheer for LBGTQ community. An event that 16 years prior when a homosexual gave a speech the Texas delegation turned its back on the speaker and began praying.

          • I think guilt by association is usu a weak argument. If I don’t blame all Muslims for a few of their crazies, I can’t blame Trump for his either. What’s fair is fair.

However, as an american, or human, this dark underbelly of Trump is hard to digest.

            http://www.nytimes.com/video/us/politics/100000004533191/unfiltered-voices-from-donald-trumps-crowds.html

I highly doubt you’d find that at Bernie rallies.

          • willbest

You mean the Bernie supporters that shut down Trump’s Chicago rally with violence?

          • I don’t agree with that either, but I doubt they were shouting slogans like “fuck them beaners” “fuck islam” “fuck that nigger” “cunt” etc.

            Just sayin.

          • willbest

No they were just blocking ambulances. So instead of hurting people’s feelings, they were preventing them from getting medical care.

          • So the Bernie protesters are just as bad in the Will book.

            Got it.

          • willbest

I hope you would have got I consider them worse, because Trump supporters, to my knowledge have never rioted, nor have they denied the peaceful assembly of law abiding citizens.

But as I said, on a personal level, whoever wins this is entirely irrelevant to me. I am more concerned about…

            http://siliconangle.com/blog/2016/08/05/watson-correctly-diagnoses-woman-after-doctors-were-stumped/

He had the knee scoped by a famous sports doc, James McAndrews (he’s done a ton of these operations for football and baseball players). If it were just business as usual McPhee should have been back a month ago. He’s still on the PUP list. Not good.

They prolly want to err on the side of caution. I’ve noticed that’s a trend overall in the NFL. Lots of others coming off PUP may not even play the PS (like Mo Wilkerson).

It’s def different than the Ditka/Parcell’s/JimmyJohnson method.

Your boy Bernie just bought himself a 3rd home, a summer beachfront place for 600 grand. That wasn’t very proletarian of him. How could he do that when children are starving in this country? He doesn’t NEED that. The government should just take it and give it to some poor people.
