The Case Against the Green Bay Packers: Volume II (Jeff)

| August 5th, 2016

Screen Shot 2016-08-01 at 4.10.59 PM

The following is the fourth in a four-part series breaking down why the other teams in the NFC North won’t be contenders this season. (The Packers get two parts.)

The case against Green Bay will be made simply and directly. It will be made with two words and two words only.

Fox.

Fangio.

The Bears don’t have run of the mill defensive coaches. They don’t have defensive coaches that cling to an ideology or scheme, despite the relative successes or failures of that ideology/scheme. The Bears have coaches who believe the way you win on the defensive side of the ball is with talented players and toughness.

And for the first time, the Bears sideline has the better weapons.

Jeff, dialing it in to focus on Twitter? C’mon man. Needed some more.

    • SC Dave

I think this article might fit in a tweet?

      • Big Mike

Maybe data can write about the Bears’ defense.

        • Johnnywad

No. His summary will include a sentence or two on how the Bears defense, while retooled, still is good enough to beat the Packers.

I just don’t need that in my day this August.

          • Big Mike

That’s false. Unless I’m calling the wrong guy data. I’m talking about Jonathan Wood. That guy usually slices up some very cool, objective but friendly opinion.

          • Johnnywad

Oh that’s our boy Wood alright. He sucks you in with his facts and statistics and objectivity. And just as you’re thinking, “This is good stuff.”, there it is………”and in conclusion, as long as the Packers have Rodgers, the Bears can’t win the division.”

            He breaks my heart.

          • Big Mike

I like facts and stats. Fuck the Packers and Aaron Rodgers.

“The Bears have coaches who believe the way you win on the defensive side of the ball is with talented players and toughness.”
Is this really that unique in the NFL? Is this a secret from the Green Bay Packers?

    • GP portrayed by Eric Roberts

It’s certainly something Marc Trestman did not know.

      • Big Mike

Amen. Trestman.. what a douche. So much better off now. Cost us 2 years on the post Lovie – rebuild. Pisses me off. Shea fn McLellin.

        • Huge Bear’s Penis

don’t forget to put some of that blame on that piece of shit Emery.

          • Big Mike

At a gut level, I can’t work out the same disgust with Emery. My football brain and hindsight tells me he was the guy that drove the franchise into the ground. From that last year with Lovie, to hiring Trestman. But I just hated Trestman. Seeing his nerdy little stupid face as the head coach of the beloved made me want to puke. Watching him say fuck defense, I’m going to score 30+ points a game, get out coached almost every single game, watching his limp dick coaches destroy players’ careers by not helping them progress, or putting them in the right scheme, letting the club house deteriorate into a circus. For me that was Trestman. Even though Emery hired Trestman, he couldn’t have predicted entirely what a terrible HC that guy would be. So yeah, and emery, but Trestman is my poster boy for 2 wasted years.

          • Huge Bear’s Penis

Just for an FYI you referred to Shea fn McLellin as if it was Trestmans pick, not sure if that is what you meant to imply or just cursing CD…. CD 1st year was Lovie’s last year. Emery hired Trestman leading to Mel Tucker being hired. Emery also only had 2 successful draft picks in 3 years and one of them is injury prone. Then just look at the FAs Emery signed and you would not be impressed.

          • Big Mike

Yeah I realized as I typed it. Cursing CD. No doubt the architect of the steaming like of crap that the Bears turned into. Just for me I have a more emotional angry reaction to Trestman

          • Huge Bear’s Penis

I understand, if I see either Emery or Trestman walking down the street I am not going to hesitate to punch either of them.

          • CanadaBear

Nessman pisses me off. Emery just makes me roll my eyes. They both suck moose wang.

        • DaMurph

Shea was drafted the night of the first and last DBB draft party. A WTF night that will live in infamy!!

Wanted to give you boys some good news on the personnel front.
A relative who is involved in Washington sports player development gave a glowing recommendation to the Bears pickup of Darrell Young. Young was deemed expendable in Gruden’s system but was really liked by both the coaching staff and the fans in Washington. He was a quality player that could do much more than just open holes for the running back. He said it was a “great pickup” for the Bears who plan on using the FB way more in their running game.

    • willbest

My love for Jeff Dickerson knows no bounds. He has an 11-minute podcast with John Clayton that is 2 minutes on the D and 9 minutes on Cutler is the issue. At one point the professor asks a follow up question about just how did he dis each OC. I gave up at that point. Then he has a follow up article on that silly comment about Danny T. smelling good. I don’t read about other teams on ESPN that often but he’s the only team writer that I’ve seen that continually bashes the team he covers. Lucky us!

So many unforced errors, outside of the fact they shot the kid in the back as he was running away

Cop at start in right passenger has his gun out the window. Opens door brings gun to Black Jag, brings gun across his body continuing to shoot as he swings the gun PAST his partner.

When video cuts to his partner: Partner empties his clip downrange at the Jag as it goes through the intersection. There is an additional cruiser down that WAY! And he just dumps that clip out. It’s amazing he didn’t hit the cruiser coming for the cutoff. Some of those rounds had to go into people’s yards and down those sidewalks.

Forget about the chase after the kid dumps out of the Jag. I won’t even go there. Just looking at the number of rounds discharged that had a high probability of hitting other officers, that is nuts.

    http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/ct-chicago-police-shooting-paul-oneal-video-met-20160805-story.html

    • CanadaBear

The guy that got out on the passenger side was shooting his pistol like he was John Wayne on a horse. For fuck’s sake, use two hands and concentrate instead of just shooting willy nilly. I’m shocked the cop coming up the other way didn’t get shot.

      • DaMurph

Part of the training, shooting on the run. Different in Canada?

    • Cormonster

Totally reckless by the first gung-ho cop. He should definitely lose his job for having an itchy trigger finger and maybe some other charges.

I don’t get why they are even risking their own safety over a car. It’s not like the guy is gonna get any meaningful time even if they do catch him. The kid was just trying to make a few bucks to pay for trade school so he could get a job at CommEd.

      • willbest

boosting Jags? But you are right. Cop should be spending 3-5 in jail for reckless endangerment at a min.

      • DaMurph

Thats how I got my job at ComEd, joined a car theft ring and worked the rich suburbs of Chicago.

        • Cormonster

What did you do for ComEd? I have some buddies who are linemen in the northern burbs. I wouldn’t want the hours after a storm, especially in the winter, but I sure wouldn’t mind the pay!

          • DaMurph

I worked at a coal fired power plant for 37 years. I worked in coal handling, mostly outside work on on the shore of the lake. No heat, no air, just the elements mixed with a hefty dose of coal dust. I feel your buddie’s pain. Linemen have some brutal work, although they are well paid! Ha!

I keep wondering if Roy Robertson Harris is going to make the team. I guess you’d classify him as a PSH but the fucking kid is a FREAK athlete with size and about 30lbs they can put on him. He played LB in college but projects as a fucking 3-4 DE. That’s insane.

Grasu carted off the practice field. No word on the injury.

    • You’re about to get Jericho’d

I like the concept of going young. I don’t like the concept of jettisoning your best O lineman from last year so he could go start at Center for the Chargers. Larsen is the center now. Amini Solatolu just passed his physical so he’ll step in at Guard in any situations that Larsen would have played. Mark my words, the next signing is a G/C. Whitehair better be the fucking truth man.

      Update: oh yeah, he’s fucked.

      • CanadaBear

From my all-time favorite writer; Chicago Bears starting center Hroniss Grasu suffered a non-contact knee injury on Saturday. Head coach John Fox said the injury looks serious. That’s all I’ve heard so far. What have you guys heard? If Fox says it looks serious without an X-ray or MRI it’s probably a given he’s out for the year.

        • You’re about to get Jericho’d

yup, it buckled. Non contact is scary because it just happens. Last year and this year many have gone down with non contact and it has nothing to do with Soldier Field. It’s just fucking physics.

          • willbest

The knee isn’t evolutionarily developed to handle a 300+ man driving on it hard day in and day out.

          • You’re about to get Jericho’d

especially if that 300lb man is genetically supposed to be 255

          • RenoBear

This. Amazing that so many people don’t realize this. I am genetically predisposed to weighing 165-170 lbs. it’s just what I weigh. Exercising, working out etc just leans me out and hardens muscle. If I put on 40-50 lbs (!) of muscle.. Guess what? Oh yeah my tendons are still the same ones designed to handle 170 lbs. they WILL fail. Sad to see Grasu go down. Heard good things

        • AlbertInTucson

If I recall correctly, Jordy Nelson’s was a non-contact in a pre-season game last year.

        • You’re about to get Jericho’d

          Larsen will be Center.

          • Huge Bear’s Penis

I am sure he will be but I was just making the point that we have options, coaching staff will make sure we have the best players out there. On a side note it’s refreshing to be able to trust the coaches.

          • You’re about to get Jericho’d

I trust the coaches to do the right thing. Larsen has been running as the backup center and not Whitehair. Whitehair is the starting left guard.

          • CanadaBear

Very tough for a rookie to start at C. If the injuries keep piling up might as well start him there to see if he can handle it. It’s not like the Beloved were going anywhere this year.

    • Huge Bear’s Penis

      Soldier Field turf strikes again

      • You’re about to get Jericho’d

had nothing to do with turf. Last year Kelvin Benjamin broke off a pass route in practice and his ACL just tore in half. It just happens…..just didn’t want it to happen to our starting Center 4 weeks before the season

        • Huge Bear’s Penis

Until we see video showing he was just standing there or walking when it just went out, can’t say it had nothing to due with turf.

          • You’re about to get Jericho’d

i hear you man , but even if he was running and cutting it is usually physics and not the turf.

          • Huge Bear’s Penis

He is playing for about 2 million less than he would have as a Bear. Pace should have gone to Slausen and said “okay, we are going to pay you $6 million over the next 2 years, instead of 8, but $4.75 million is guaranteed instead of the zero now”.

      • BearDown100393

Pace’s decision is looking brutal right now.

      • Irish Sweetness

And the thing is … they should. But they won’t/can’t. He already knows our system – and he’s good at it – Slauson is the perfect signing for us right now. But they won’t, because Mr. Pace is playing the “everyone’s looking at me” game and not actually got his eye on the ball. This team is not built to withstand injury on the OL or at WR, To be a playoff/SB hopeful you must be able to overcome hard times.

I’ve seen the team we’re going in to battle with this year. Defense doesn’t look bad. We picked up the obvious bargains on defense but weren’t prepared to go out and wrestle Wilkerson from the Jets.

But that offense is short on studs,

I was trying to watch the cycling road race. NBC showed 30 seconds of the road race (literally) while showing the entire water polo match between the US and Croatia. Nothing like putting in perspective how popular bicycle racing is in the US.

          • You’re about to get Jericho’d

Sorry Canada. Cycling is like the cutler of American sports.

          • CanadaBear

I know. Back in the ’80’s I was bitching to my mother (who was around 70 at the time) about the lack of cycling and she replied (and I quote) “That’s because nobody wants to watch that shit!”. Granted she had a few beers in her at the time but it seemed overly harsh. I still laugh about it.

          • SC Dave

I saw about the last 60-70km at a sports bar. Was on one of the alternate channels; there are at least four covering the Games.

          • CanadaBear

It wasn’t on any channels that I had so I watched it live streaming on CBC’s website. Helluva race. The guy that won is a hard man. There was a ton of climbing in the race and the winner (GVA) is not a little guy. Really happy for Belgium, they’re cycling nuts.

            What’s your TV source/provider?

I have DISH and besides the local NBC feed, there are 8 other NBC-owned channels showing the Olympics including, NBCSN, MSNBC, Bravo, Golf channel, Telemundo, NBC Universal, CNBC, and USA Network.

          • CanadaBear

Tirico said the race was streaming on NBC Olympics site. I went there and said it wasn’t available in my area. So I went to CBC’s site and watched it live. I’ve got cable (I know, I know) but I don’t have most of those channels. No biggie. Just wanted to get a laugh out of you guys about water polo being more popular than bike racing.

    Lifted from Sports Mockery
Louis Vasquez played under John Fox when he was head coach of the
Denver Broncos. He has started 101 games in his career and is still just
29-years old. He made the Pro Bowl in 2013 and then helped the team win
the Super Bowl this past season. This is about as good an option as the
    Bears could hope for.

Vasquez is a proven starter. He knows the coaching staff and the
blocking scheme. He’s still fairly young and he bring more championship
experience to a roster thirsting for it. Seems the only thing standing
in the way is money, and the Chicago Bears should have more than enough
cap space to get a deal done.

Cowboys OG Ronald Leary remains open to a trade.

“That feeling on my end hasn’t changed at all,” Leary said, before adding the sides haven’t talked about it since the beginning of camp. NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reported Thursday that the Saints had pursued a move, but to “no avail.” The Cowboys could be trying to figureout a way to turn Leary into pass rush help, but it’s not as if a 27-year-old backup guard will be able to fetch an impact player. – Roto

Seriously, I think I have a better 40 and broad jump than him, and now I’m beginning to think I only didn’t make the NFL cuz I’m somehow psychically bankrupt.

Coach John Fox singled out seventh-round WR Daniel Braverman as someone who “just keeps making plays.”

“I know it’s just practice, but we try and simulate games as much as we can in the practice and he continues to flash and make plays,” Fox continued. Braverman was the 230th overall pick back in April. He’s small at 5’10/175 and didn’t impress much athletically at his Pro Day, running 4.53 with a 28 1/2-inch vertical and 9-foot-4 broad
jump. But he could have a future in the slot.

So I have thought about how the NFL can make it up to the fans for the embarrassment over the HoF game. They can get rid of that other period of time where they crap all over the aesthetics of the field, Pinktober.

    • Big Mike

Hate pinktober. Shh. My community gets so into it. Sending their kids to games with pink socks, shoelaces, gloves, wristbands.

I like how the author of this article has watched more Bears games than the national press. A real commitment to the craft.

Dowell Logans: Nathan Lane’s gay porn stunt double

      (NTTAWWT)

OC still my biggest concern, followed by Oline, and TE.

haha, Nathan Lane. Loggins looks like he should be in a Cuck vid.

“If you’re wondering how Chicago has managed to remain an openly corrupt and viciously segregated city for decades and decades, I refer you to parade of mustachioed cows shuffling through Soldier Field every other week hoping that the ghost of Jim McMahon’s motor function comes rising out of the turf.”

It’s refreshing knowing there’s still some kicking it old school like when you see an Amish churning butter.

like when you see a kid figure out a long division problem instead of using a calculator. It just feels right.

Mosquitoes and raw sewahge notwithstanding, NBC enjoyed boffo ratings for Rio’s opening weekend, especially out West.

Sunday night: Salt Lake 25.8/47; Denver 22.3/43; St. Louis 21.6/35; Kansas City 21.4/35; Phoenix 21.0/36.

      sleep apnea maybe?

      • MB30SD

nah, actually happens a lot to young athletes. Get your kids hearts checked early.

A kicker for a rival team in HS had the same thing happen. Brutal. Kid also ran track and played soccer, was a really good athlete. Just didn’t wake up one morning. Tragic.

No cause of death given at this point in time.

man, hearing Trevathan talk is fucking night and day from that bullshit we had been throwing out there on D with Shea. DJ Williams was a stud but he was at the end of his career with us and was hurt too much. This guy and Freeman are legit, McPhee, Hicks, the swagger of the D becoming more apparent, it’s all coming together. They are going to play fierce and they WILL make plays.

    • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd ArbyManager#83 (ButchDeadLift)

Trevathan is a true leader and ILB. He also didn’t hit the league as a #1 pick, so he has that chip that never goes away (see, Brady).

Sooner or later, it’ll be his team cuz McPhee is like Animal-Mother from “Full Metal Jacket”. A beast you want on your side, but not the guy you want leading your squad. He’s got that Dlinemen mentality that should bring fear to prancing QBs.

      NFLs on notice.

      • You’re about to get Jericho’d

Brady gets so angry when he thinks about that shit. That guy is a maniac.

I remember when we got Pep and Jeff wrote that the Bears just put the NFCN on fucking notice. That’s how I am starting to feel with these new guys on D.

Pettiness is an underrated motivator of greatness.

I think Jordan was calling coaches out from gradeschool in his induction speech.

He invited the guy to the ceremony that beat him out on his varsity bball team

          • Huge Bear’s Penis

            then demeaned him.

          • You’re about to get Jericho’d

fuck yeah he did. And that is why he was great……because he was of singular mindset. His mindset was to dominate at all costs.

I met a badass neurosurgeon at a dinner party. I asked a co-worker, “how many times has that guy been divorced, 2 or 3?”

Answer: 2 but his 3rd just moved out.

If you’re truly great at something then your are probably imbalanced.

          • Huge Bear’s Penis

I sure Jordan’s kids were happy when he basically said you will never be as great as me in anything you do.

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd ArbyManager#83 (ButchDeadLift)

I’ve read a lot of bios of great people, and many of them are at best absentee, or downright destructive fathers.

Picasso’s kid went to go visit papa and picasso essentially told his maid to turn him away. Picasso’s kid then rode off in his motorcycle and killed himself, and Picasso kinda just shrugged.

Even with Einstein who many see as benign. He told his to-be wife – ‘I’m gonna win the Nobel eventually – when that happens you can have an apartment to yourself to raise the kids and leave me the fuck alone’

          • SC Dave

One can be great without being an asshole like Jordan.

  • You’re about to get Jericho’d

Losing our starting Center is concerning to say the least but I have to believe that the Bears will be able to move forward with a combo of guys on the roster and some vets they can bring in. Other teams get hit when it comes to OL depth too. I think this year our D fills the gaps and makes up for a lot. My alarm bells are going off about how aggressive these guys are going to be. Each guy talks about bringing the heat.

Even the rookie Safety is talking about lighting people up. Jesus, get the checkbooks ready, there gonna be some helmet to defenseless WR shit going on this year.

    • Huge Bear’s Penis

At least we lost our Center early in camp giving time for whoever is backing him up to get into a groove. Could have been worse, could have lost Grasu in the 4th preseason game.

    • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd ArbyManager#83 (ButchDeadLift)

I think POX wanted to make over the roster in their own image (by trying to go young), but this aint Madden. Injuries occur, and they’re going to have to pick up an 30+ C/OG once the roster cuts start.

Worst comes to worse, Leary from the Cowboys is on the trading block. They’re looking for pass rusher, and someone like Corn Wash should appease Marinelli.

And I’m sure there’ll be other viable (though not ideal) options available.

In a way, we’re kinda lucky we know we don’t have Grasu or Slauson cuz now we know what we need with some time to make some moves.

Grasu was gonna suck balls anyways, so I’m really not mourning his loss. Onward and upward.
