The Alshon Jeffery Poll

| December 15th, 2016

My Vote:

Tag him.Β Jeffery is too talented a player to let walk out the door but too erratic to give big money. Tagging him guarantees the Bears will have one top tier receiver in 2017 and keeps theΒ window open for an extension should Jeffery mesh well with whomever is playing quarterback next season.

    I vote: YES

    • BillW

      He’s back. Now where’s Cheesy?

  • Scharfinator

When do we need to resign him? Can we wait until after the draft? Seeing that play out would be the most important part…

    • DaBearsBlog

If they tag him, they have a window until June I believe. If they don’t sign him, he will be gone by the third day of free agency.

      • Scharfinator

Ahh, then yeah, tag him and see how the draft goes. Then we can decide if we want to release him into the wild.

      • Irish Sweetness

Good. Anyone paying that joker 17 million deserves to be robbed. We said no to guys like Anquan Boldin … and then actually airlocked Brandon Marshall because he wanted to be on TV.

        • Big Mike

Geez…It’s not your money. The Bears have more than enough cap room. It wouldn’t be a long term deal. 1 year money so it doesn’t cripple the team long term. If anything the biggest downside is using the tag for a 2nd year isn’t looked on favorably by agents etc. In this case the Bears have a great reason. “look we tagged him to evaluate him, he was out a lot of games, we were very injured and did not get to see what we wanted to, so now we need to do that again next year”.

I don’t know what people are mad at Alshon about. It seems that him being injured and getting tripped up on a PED violation. He’s not mouthy (for a WR), He works his ass off blocking, he’s open a lot. He catches everything near him.

          • DaCoaches Mustache

Wouldn’t their available money be better spent in free agency? using that much of your cap on a player that probably won’t be on the team the following year seems stupid to me.

          • Big Mike

The 4-5 million they might be overpaying him buy is 1 year money. The Bears didn’t even use all of their cap room last off season. They’d have to spend that much to find a replacement #1 WR.

          • SC Dave

            It’s Irish.

          • Big Mike

            Plus I bought a freakin 17 jersey..

          • Irish Sweetness

It IS my money. It’s MY team. There’s no NFL without fans Mike, you dig?

Know who was open even more (and allowed AJ to get open in 2013), and blocked better, and definitely caught everything near him? Well …

        • DaCoaches Mustache

I think your the last guy on the Marshall Bandwagon. Nuttier than squirrel turds.

          • Irish Sweetness

Odell Beckham Jr. Tell me that guy isn’t a cancer. BM was not a cancer. He cared about winning and cared about his team. OBJ cares about himself.

Pace got that one way wrong. I keep saying it, the NFL has 20% of the players will one day be convicted of a serious crime (ref: NFL: pros and cons). Rapists, GBH, felons .. but Brandon Marshall, one of the top 3 receivers in the NFL in his day wanted to do a show. Well fuck him, right? Who needs one of the most consistent receivers ever?

            SMH.

          • CanadaBear

His teammates were so sick of his shit they were worn out. When BMarsh went off on his “unacceptable” tirade after the Miami game, most of his teammates walked out shaking their heads. When he called a news conference and has handouts for the press so he can talk about a pending lawsuit, the coaches and mgmt were shaking their heads. By the end, everyone was sick of his shit. If you don’t think team chemistry is a thing, I don’t know what to tell you.

          • Irish Sweetness

That’s because quite frankly they were a bunch of fucking losers. He was the best player we’ve had since Urlacher. BM was the only one who cared enough about winning. Fuck those guys. Those were the Devin Hesters – the real cancers.

          • CanadaBear

Un-huh! You are the only one here that can’t let this go or that Cam is our #1WR. Your track record concerning Chicago WR’s is less than stellar.

          • DaCoaches Mustache

There is a reason why he never makes it past year 3 on any one team. He’s that one guy at work who never shuts the fuck up and drives everyone nuts.

    • Big Mike

You need to know going into the draft. Plus, the draft is a Ouija board. Who knows? We know what we have with Alshon. He’s a damn stud.

      • MB30SD

        Sigh

        • Big Mike

What’s your deal with him? He blocks hard, plays hard, runs good routes, catches everything thrown his way, has good speed, size. He wants a long term contract. So what its human nature. He’s relatively quiet (for a WR). We have so man other bigger problems on the Bears. Why not mark WR fixed for 2017 and get back to it in 2018. Any real good WR is going to be a 1st or 2nd rounder and it will push Safety and CB to drafting a bucket of them in the 3rd and 4th rounds. Any WR on the open market is going to be just as overpaid as Alshon.

          • SC Dave

It’s MB. He gets that way.

          • Irish Sweetness

But ‘stud’ has a qualifiers? How many stud WRs are there? Nobody is disagreeing that he’s good, just not 17M good.

          • Irish Sweetness

What FA WR is getting 17M this off-season Mike?

          • Big Mike

I don’t know who the FA’s are. Your tone tells me none of them. πŸ™

  • BearDown100393

Sign him to a new deal and move forward. A lot of remaining work needs to be done at the other positions. Otherwise just back to square one next season.

    • Big Mike

Exactly. Why fuck up a solid position group. People here don’t get it. It was the same with Cutler. We’ve got a guy. Let’s focus elsewhere. Our guy can be everywhere from awful to great. But what’s out there is just awful, or over priced (even more than our guy).

  • MB30SD

Just use maths, how much is he worth for 5 – 7 games a year?

    (Rolls fucking eyes)

    • MB30SD

We look at this shit through the eyes of a historically shittily (you’re welcome) run organization. Oh he’s got taaaalent!!

Fuck that buuuuullshiiiiiit… What would bellicheat do… He would have unceremoniously cut his fucking injury prone ass two years ago and replaced him with a fucking piggly wiggly janitor and seen zero drop off.

Maybe it’s time to start mimicking the best instead of trying to be the browns north.

      Smmfh

      • BearDown100393

The Bears don’t have scouts at Piggly Wiggly.

        • MB30SD

          That’s my point!

          • Scharfinator

THATS THE WHOLE FUCKING ISSUE! πŸ™‚

      • Irish Sweetness

Yup. Bellifat was the first coach to cut Hoyer too, so he could see the lack of range early on.

        • Big Mike

He had Tom Brady and three other options.

          • MB30SD

Dude, he had nothing in 15. Literally street bodies and they got to the game. Fuck me

          • Big Mike

Belichik is a great HOF coach because he has had Tom Brady forever. Gave the organization a chance to work on being good at everything else. Mistakes were easily covered up. They’ve made them. They had the luxury of sticking with the same offense for over a decade. Lot easier for new guys to fit in, when every single other players knows exactly what to do, for their spot and the guy next to him. I don’t know who the Pats had besides Hoyer in 15.

          • Irish Sweetness

He was gone in 13. They carried Ryan Mallet. In fairness to Bellifat, if you look back through their rosters, they’re like a who’s who.

          • Big Mike

Tom Brady took every snap during the regular season that year. I think Mallet got in for a snap or two in one of the playoff games.

          • MB30SD

How many games has tb missed in the last 2 years dide

          • Big Mike

I don’t know. I’m not a Patriots fan, don’t play fantasy football. But it’s been a few. Just shows that with a good OL, strong defense, receiving weapons, an average QB can survive.

          • Irish Sweetness

If he was Garrapolo material, he makes the team. Anyway, I don’t think they’re looking at Hoyer. Barkley and Shaw are very interesting.

      • Sauron’s right eyeball

Thank you. Potential is over rated. Get it done or move outta the way and sit down.

        • Big Mike

Alshon has produced. Injuries and suspension have cost him games. He’s also played injured. Alshon is a stud.

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

He’s replaceable several ways. Shit me a QB and a top 5 D, then sign your prima donna’s.

          • Big Mike

What’s your problem with Alshon. The guy is a stud. Is it that the tag overpays him? So what. It’s a one year thing. Bears aren’t pressed on the cap at all. There is no move that I could see, that tagging Alshon prevents. He’s not a prima donna at all. (again, for a WR). He goes about his business doesn’t say much. He worked out in FL instead of with the team during voluntary practices. Yeah, that’s a bit of a negative. But that happens a lot when guys are tagged. The Bears are better with Alshon.

So what if they over pay him for a season.

          • CanadaBear

I’ve read the Bears will upwards of $80 mil in cap space this off season (I’m guessing that number includes launching Cutler and letting Alshon walk). Money is not the issue, talent is. I think Pace loves this situation and is going to go on a spree of mid to upper tier talent. Hope he gets the right guys!

          • Big Mike

So how do you replace Alshon? Or do you say Kevin, (Cotton Candy Legs) White is our #1 WR. Do you remember what offense looks like without a true #1 WR? (see every team that had Devin Hester playing WR). Who does our “interim QB” throw the ball to? A replacement is going to cost $10 million a year for multiple years. Chances are he’s not as good as Alshon.

          • Irish Sweetness

            Ok.

AJ gets offered 10M. He passes, goes elsewhere. We now have Cutty and AJ’s salaries in our sack of cash. Every single year there are FA WRs like Boldin or whoever. You just need the nouse to see them there and recognise them.

Sign a good vet. Sign two. Then you have two ballers, Cam, Kevin(!) whom I can only assume improves (3 year rule), and I can’t figure out Bellamy … great hands when he feels like it. Eddie? 6M? We have the money to get possibly better receivers than AJ, 2 or 3 of those mature types for his 17M tag, no?

          • Big Mike

Boldin being good is a lucky find at this stage of his career. Me I’d just like to check off WR as done for this off season. White can’t get worse than not playing ever…. Eddie Royal gone. His salary needs to be amortized over 4-5 games. That’s all he’ll give you. The thing about the NFL is that 3-4-5 B players are not worth the same as 1 A player. It’s all about the top end. Plus I dont think Pace sees AJ is probably not a building block. OR he’d be signed, while his value is arguable at its lowest. My reason for tagging him, is he could be very good next year, which lets White, the other receivers, Interim QB, Howard, OL get a real look while having a legit #1 on the field. While that’s happening Bears can get serious about fixing their secondary, adding an OT, and building up their (soon to be) beastly front 7.

          • Irish Sweetness

Why does Pace love going into the season with lots of cap space?

          • CanadaBear

You can carryover some of the cap space to the following year.

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

Don’t have a problem. Wr is not our problem, simmer down bubba.

          • CanadaBear

WHAT!??? You haven’t been watching recently. Meredith is the only WR that can catch consistently. If Alshon is gone that leaves Kevin White, Eddie Royal and Cam Meredith as your top 3. By October White and Royal won’t be playing and Cam is the Bears #1 WR. Unless you’re Irish, this seems like a bad idea.

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

You can’t establish chemistry between the receivers and QB’s if every 2 or three weeks a new scrub steps in. Lotta posters are over reacting on this topic.

          • CanadaBear

Scrub is the operative word in that sentence!

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

You use what you have st your disposal. All I’m saying is don’t over react on the Alshon contract until spring training. A lot can happen between now and then.

          • Irish Sweetness

Oh no, I want AJ around, just not at 17M. We need that big target.

          • SC Dave

Meredith also drops the ball too much. Less than Bellamy, but that is saying nothing at all.

          • Irish Sweetness

That’s not true. 111 receivers drop the ball more often than Cam. But never let facts get in the way, Dave.

            https://www.sportingcharts.com/nfl/stats/drops/2016/

Find Cameron’s name on this list of ball-droppers.Look at the best receivers in the NFL in that top 20.

#1 is Jordan Howard though, way out ahead (among WRs with 12+ recs) on 16%. Kadeem Carey drops one out of four thrown his way.

          • Big Mike

So keep tag him and move on the big issues like the secondary, OT, TE, etc. Not mentioning QB.. I think the draft class is thin. I don’t hate Cutler, Barkley, Hoyer whoever don’t care.

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

Ok, you tag him only if it doesn’t interfere with the rebuild. Teams normally aren’t built around WR’s. Unless you’re Jaxonville.

          • Big Mike

Not built around WRs but do you remember what the Bears offense looked like without a # 1 WR (see Hester as the #1). Kevin (cotton candy legs) White isn’t there yet. Wilson is a free agent. Royal is good for 4 games a year. Bellamy, Meredith and Braverman… C’mon. With Alshon, the Bears would have won the last three games.

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

Sadly, we were a better team then.

          • Big Mike

and we still couldn’t get it done without a legit #1 WR. All the more reason to tag AJ.

          • Irish Sweetness

Don’t get us wrong Mike, got zero problem with AJ being on the team. But paying him 17M on a tag? Fuck that. That’s for the studliest of the studliest. That’s top 5 money. He’s not even top ten.

          • CanadaBear

If he was the best in the league it would not have come to this.

          • Big Mike

I don’t care how much he’s paid on a 1 year deal. So what if he’s overpaid. I’ve always gotten the sense that for most fans overpaying a guy really pisses people off. Sets that guy up to never be accepted by fans, no matter what he does. What I hate are long term contracts that over pay guys. This is a one year deal. Buys the Bears time to see White, without the pressure of having to be a #1, gives our QB a chance to show what he can do with a Varsity set of receivers. Helps the OL because guys will be open, 3rd and forever might happen fewer times, teams can’t just play run defense, makes holes easier to open up. Going out there with White, Bellamy and Meredith next year would be a joke.

So replacing Alshon is who? A FA that we will overpay for, a draft pick which defers drafting for the secondary, OT etc.

          • Irish Sweetness

We mightn’t have to replace him. I don’t want to replace him.

I want to see Pace say “OK AJ, go get yourself a job, there’s 10M dollars here in Chicago for you. Beat that, good luck.

We both want the same thing Mike, I just want to pay him 7M less.

          • Big Mike

Well, a $10million one year offer is DOA. It’s the same as cutting him. So now you’re likely talking multiple years. Which brings me back to why I’d tag him. Bears might have nearly $90million in cap space without AJ and Cutler. I think if they tag alshon and bring cutler back, (which I’m 50/50 on) they’d have $55 million. Which is a ton of bread. Especially considering they can do bonuses and defer some of the cap hit to later y years when presumably Cutler and AJ won’t be a $35 million hit to the cap.

          • SC Dave

            The money is not relevant.

          • SC Dave

These guys are trolling you, Mike. Unless they’ve only recently stepped off the ledge.

Alshon is by far the best receiver the Bears have, and is very likely better than anyone available in this year’s draft.

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

No dave. Not trolling. The Bears existed before Alshon.

          • Big Mike

            Man that’s not nice

            Get Outlook for iOS

          • Irish Sweetness

By far? No. And certainly not in the four games that come before September … in the time of unicorns. Cam has great hands, shiftier. Has had no chemistry built up with anyone who’s been throwing him the ball. Not his fault.

          • MB30SD

Who been majorly injured the last two years. Usually that trend gets worse not better with age/more wear and tear maings

          • Big Mike

That’s why you tag him and see. Are the injuries a fluke or a pattern. Trending towards a pattern. He had issues at SC in college.

Also depends on what his agent will take. If i’m the Bears, I put “decent” not market setting guaranteed money out there, with incentives clauses that pay him at pro-bowl level, if he performs like it.

          • MB30SD

Dude!!! You guys drive me fucking crazy.

We deserve to be shit. I’m done. Over it.

            I’m out

          • Big Mike

Man, don’t be like that. Bears have proven they’ll cut guys that are talented. I have no idea what they’ll do, or where they value Alshon. I like him. I hate him when he’s not playing. So yeah, that’s the thing. His ability to stay on the field is not very good. So you’re gambling on can he stay on the field. Because when he is on the field, he’s the best WR we can control next year. Money isn’t an issue.

We can disagree on this. No problem. Maybe I’ll win this won. You certainly were right when we disagreed on Chicken Dinner. 2017 Playoffs. You watch. This team has talent. I believe Fox has them fighting hard and getting pissed off about losing.

          • willbest

He has not been injured this year. He was on pace for his second best season

          • Irish Sweetness

ON PACE?? HE HAS ONE FUCKING TOUCHDOWN, WILL!

He’s on pace for two TDs, and you want to pay him 17M …

          • willbest

I don’t give a flop about WR TDs. I care about Yards per attempt.

          • MB30SD

            Yaaaaaawn.

How many games has he played again?

          • Irish Sweetness

He is most certainly not a stud.

On no basis can he be considered a stud. jsut look at his numbers – which I admit, don’t tell the whole story. He is a large target useful for jump balls. I would argue as an all-round receiver, Meredith is easily as good, if not better.

            Studs:

Doug Baldwin (12 TDs last year before anyone laughs), Julio, AB, OBJ (but a dick), AJ Green, Dez, Mike Evans, Brandon Marshall, Jarvis LAndry, Allen Robinson, T.Y Hilton, Steve Smith (used to be).

A number of guys are on the up, I don’t think AJ is necessarily one of them, he’s in the league 5 years already.

          • SC Dave

Your placing of Cam over Alshon is comical.

          • Irish Sweetness

Did you watch pre-season Dave? Sober or not? Tell the truth.

          • CanadaBear

FUCKING PRE-SEASON! Might as well watch college highlights and use that for proof.

          • Irish Sweetness

Again, what happens in pre-season is unicorn stuff for some of you.

            1. A guy kicks a 75 yard FG in PS … doesn’t mean a thing right? Can’t translate that to any kind of useful information, right?

            2. Guy makes 25 tackles in a game in PS. Fuck that guy, right? Who cares? It was in the magical time …

            3. QB throws for 600 yards and 7 TDs in PS. It was probably against scrubs right?

            4. Jordan Howard and Cam are the best WR and HB in PS (this is fact) ..just doesn’t translate right? What happened this season? Where’s Jeremy?

          • CanadaBear

Just keep fighting on that island.

          • Irish Sweetness

And College football is full of amateurs. NFL is for Pros only. I’ll take any NFL scrub squad and go and kick the shit out of anyone in college.

          • Huge Bears Penis

Preseason is also full of a bunch of amateurs.

          • Big Mike

We disagree. The Bears are instantly better when he is on the field. Meredith can’t hold Alshon’s jock. In no league, under any circumstances. The stats from guys on other teams have too many variables to make a comparison. You put Alshon on the Packers, and he will be whooping our asses for another 10 years. Put him on the Lions and we might not ever beat them again.

          • Irish Sweetness

When did I say we weren’t better with him on the field? When did I ever say that?

Seventeen Million dollars. That’s my beef.

Cam was better than AJ in pre-season. Fact. And to turn it around, we are better with Alshon AND Cam on the field together. Nobody can argue with that.

          • SC Dave

The money is not an issue. It really isn’t. Even if Cutler does not walk.

That is NOT to say I agree with paying Alshon $17M. It DOES seem too much. Someone proposed a two-year front loaded deal, and basically pay-to-play thereafter. Seems reasonable to me.

All players are a gamble – look at White. It is more probable than not that Kevin White never becomes a factor for the Bears. I very much doubt he can beat Meredith for #2.

        • Irish Sweetness

Everyone on Earth has potential. Talent means nothing. Hard work is all.

          • Huge Bears Penis

so if you fail at something it’s because you just did not work hard enough. that is one of the most asinine things I have ever heard.

      • Big Mike

Not true. Bears can act like the Patriots, when they have a Tom Brady QB. Alshon is one of only a few Pro Bow caliber players on the roster. They don’t grow on trees. The Bears have cut ties with guys they don’t see value in, or who don’t fit. Bennet, Forte..So you can’t just say the organization hasn’t evolved. A shit season sends fans into a tizzy about all of the organizations flaws. But in reality since hiring Polian, to hire Pace and Fox, they’ve made many more good moves than bad ones. We have to believe this was a reset of the organization. Pace has turned out to be a good young GM. Exactly what we wanted. Fox was the absolute best coaching candidate out there. Fangio was the best DC out there. Gase was the best OC out there. We knew he’d be gone to an HC position. Nothing you can do about that. Logjam was the continuity candidate and hasn’t been as awful as he is being blamed for being…This might be the one mistake I see. Continuing to cater to Cutler. But I suspect they are done with that.

We’ve been garbage since 2010. But that’s Emery. Not Fox, Not Pace, Not Fangio, Not Logjam. Phil fuck’n Emery. Who gave us Tresticle. Who stole two years of Bears football.

The Bears have a shit record. So they are what they are. But this 3 win shit team has building blocks. Two years ago, I was on the record saying I really hate this team. Giving up 50 three times. No heart, no ability to tackle it was shameful. This year’s team, I’m keeping a list of people that give me shit about being a Bears fan, because the Monsters are coming back.

        • Irish Sweetness

Pro Bowl receiver??? He’s averaged 5 TDs a year!

          • Big Mike

Pro Bowl caliber. Yeah, he’s got that type of talent. Potential is often over rated. But Alshon’s got talent. We’ve seen it. We just can’t remember it.

          • SC Dave

            I remember it.

          • willbest

He can’t catch balls not thrown to him. Wide the fuck open against Indy for the win.

          • Irish Sweetness

Ah, okay. So he’d be in the pro bowl if Tom Brady was his best friend?

BTW – it was Cam who was getting ignore by Jay, who goes to AJ more than he should.

        • willbest

Well 2011 was cutler busting his thumb trying to tackle. I was at that game. We were well on our way to the playoffs otgerwise

          • Big Mike

True, true and the organization shit the bed trying to extend a team that was well past its prime AND we gave up on the best OC Lovie ever had.

      • SC Dave

We don’t have Belichik, nor does any other team, so the comparison is flat-out stupid.

        • MB30SD

Yes, let’s keep emulating the browns and other bottom of the barrel teams Dave and will and whomever else loves to be fucking dumpsters of the NFL.

          Fuck. This. Shit.

Know what the definition of being a fucking moron is Dave? Doing the same shit over and over and expecting to be halfwayfuckingdecent

          • SC Dave

            You wrote this:

“He would have unceremoniously cut his fucking injury prone ass two years ago and replaced him with a fucking piggly wiggly janitor and seen zero drop off.”

No other team has had this over the past decade. None. So pretending you can emulate that to be successful makes no sense.

  • I’d give him a front-loaded deal that is basically 2 years fully guaranteed and then pay to play from there.

  • Irish Sweetness

    1. Why do you tag a player NOBODY is going to pay 18 million dollars? I count 12 or 13 better receivers in the NFL, and that’s being kind.

    2. Let him test the market .. then IFF you think he’s worth it, make him a reasonable realistic offer.

    3. Pay him on a pay-for-play basis. Doesn’t like it? Buh-bye!!

    • Big Mike

      He will get paid Irish.

      • Irish Sweetness

But who? Jaguars have $33m in cap space, Titans have $26M. Jags have Hurns and Robinson, Titans have options on offense and a couple of stud backs. Mix in the PEDs and I can’t see anyone throwing that kind of wedge at Alshon.

Throw him a bone. Offer him 10M. Show him his productivity and that he needs to STFU and sign.

Can you guess what these numbers signify?

        3, 7, 10, 4, 1.

Now take out the year he had BM across from him, coincidentally a 10 TD season ….

Hands up again who wants to pay this guy 17 million?

        • CanadaBear

And his QB’s have been …

        • Big Mike

Why the attitude? I don’t get it. Why does he have to STFU. He’s not made a lot of noise. So if the Bears overpay by 3-4 million so what.

          • willbest

Jeffery’s lack of flash seems to rub a lot of people the wrong way. And he produces without Marshall so I don’t really get it either. Bears would probably be 3-0 under barkley and shitting all over their draft board if he didn’t get suspended

          • Big Mike

Bears are better with him. WR is simply a position group I don’t want to focus on this offseason, because we don’t have to.

          • Irish Sweetness

Because he will act like’s AJ Green or Antonio or Julio, and he’s just not those guys. He isn’t.

It’s just money, Mike, I do want him on the team.

          • Big Mike

If he acts like those guys and doesn’t play like it, the league has a way of sorting those guys out. He won’t be a problem in 2018 for sure if that happens. Those other guys have that kind of money x3 in guarantees and with long term deals. Guy that gets tagged twice is either a chump, or on a team that is strapped by the cap. Bears aren’t strapped by the cap. AJ is a chump, because he’s missed so many games. some his fault (PEDs) some maybe his fault. Another year like this and his price tag will drop. If these are all soft tissue injuries again.

        • willbest

Titans need a WR for Marcus. That offense would be even more legit

          • Irish Sweetness

A possible, maybe the only destination for him.

          • SC Dave

lol. You are really too much.

Should the Bears make the mistake of not signing Jeffery, there will be a dozen or more teams calling his agent.

          • Irish Sweetness

But not offering him 17M … agreed?

    • Huge Bears Penis

the problem with letting him test free agency is that he could easily sign elsewhere and not give us chance to match.

      • Irish Sweetness

        (shrugs)

Then I’m signing an Anquan or two other like him for the same price. I filled more spots and got value for money at the same time

        • Huge Bears Penis

yes because old receivers are all the rage and always produce. {sarcasm} For every Steve Smith signed there is an Andre Johnson that kept going a couple years to long. BTW you keep saying someone like Boldin. Boldin is not a game changer anymore, he is possession receiver and he has lost several steps. You need game changers.

  • Irish Sweetness

    Rogue One ROCKS !!

Take a leaf out of Gareth Edwards’ manual JJ Abrams. That’s how you do Star Wars movies. And the CGI is next-level … two characters you weren’t expecting to see again … no spoilers.

    Just. Wow.

  • Big Mike

I think tagging him is the right option. He will be overpaid based on his 2015-1016 performance. But it is not a long term deal the Bears get weighed down by. In the background, You have to think about what tagging him will do to the prospects of signing him long term, as well as how much of a bitch will he be about it.

  • Sauron’s right eyeball

I don’t do polling. Argue on the merits or shut the heck up.

    • Irish Sweetness

The results are shocking, most think we should pay a guy who is not one of the top ten receivers 17 million dollars to maybe play football. Insane.

      • MB30SD

That’s not my issue… My issue is he possibly COULD be in that group… If he played more than 5 full healthy games a fucking year.

Tell him sure, we’ll pay you top 10 – 15 wr pay, but per game… Bitch

        • Sauron’s right eyeball

          Lol

  • BillW

    Over/under on no-shows Sunday?

Has to be at least 20,000.

Jeff said 50 yard line seats available for $60.

Little known fact – the NFL Ticket Exchange won’t let you post tickets for less than face value plus their service fee. So selling on there is always over face value (though the seller only gets face value).

The thinking, I’m told, is it limits “riff-raff”. Maybe – but I think they don’t want to see the free fall of prices that Jeff mentions.

The Bears (or maybe the NFL itself) still reserves the right to revoke your tickets AND your seat license if the user of the ticket causes trouble.

If that ever happened to a seat license holder, I’ve not heard it. I would think many lawyers would take the case, claiming the NFL itself encourages / entices the sale there from advertising. Obviously, a seller has no control over who buys the ticket.

Anyway – looks like my two will be part of the many thousands of no shows Sunday. But we WILL watch and hope to see Rodgers limp or by carried off the field. If he even plays.

    • Big Mike

I went to a Dec game against the Vikings in Soldier’s Field with a -3 windchill. I didn’t die because my blood was basically Captain Morgan. It was the game Tommie Harris blew out his knee. Hester also ran one back. A great day. But fuck it was cold.

      • BillW

I think it was on PFT that this is forecasted to be the coldest game time temperature ever at Soldier Field.

        • Big Mike

I saw that. I can’t imagine it being colder. If this weren’t the Packers, my guess is the place would be empty. Even with it being the Packers, I would not be surprised if this is the lowest turnout ever.

          • willbest

The Club side of the stadium has climate controlled concourse and tvs everywhere. It’s not bad for warming up a bit. Tickets cost 3 times as much but I expect that 30% of the stadium to be there

          • Big Mike

I’ve been there. Even the media deck on the Bears side of the field has heat lamps and is sheltered from the wind. I sat there once on a cold, wet windy day and was perfectly comfortable.

        • BerwynBomber

That record would also be indicative that we have not hosted many playoff games in the last, what, fifty years? For if we had I would imagine a January game would invariably be the record holder compared to the upcoming Sunday.
Speaking of which, two infamous post-season games in our history — the 2010 NFCC against GB and the ’88(?) Montana/SF won’t be able to pass in Bears weather — seemed pretty cold. But maybe I’m wrong and they were “only” in the 20s.

          • Big Mike

Not really. This cold front is epic. It’s below the record cold for most winter days, jan, feb included. Doesn’t change the fact that playing 50degree days in January are way more common than home playoff games in January.

          • BerwynBomber

I live here, BM. It’s 2 right now. Bitterly cold. But when you talk epic, you’re talking December cold not January cold. A zero (or below zero) day in January or February occurs more frequently than in Dec. Hence, my post-season post.
Anyway TBD with the game record stuff.

          • Big Mike

Oh yeah, more frequently in January or February for sure. But it still doesn’t get much colder than it is going to be this weekend. Once you are at – 3 without the windchill, that’s about as cold as Chicago ever gets, right?

          • BerwynBomber

During the barbaric winter of three years ago, I believe we had a couple minus teens type days (w/out wind chill). I believe the reason the cold front now is so historic is how early in the winter it is.

          • willbest

Yeah they kept closing schools that was a PITA to deal with

          • SC Dave
          • SC Dave

The coldest winters I remember were the first two I spent in Urbana; 1976-77 and 1977-78. During the first, there were 43 consecutive days below freezing (at least in Chicago, but it was probably the same in Urbana).

            http://www.encyclopedia.chicagohistory.org/pages/1417.html

Add to that the most snow ever in 1978-79, and I guess I saw some good ones those years.

          • BillW

My memory is the same. The fall of Michael Bilandic. Lived in an apartment in the city then and we had to do the “dibs” thing.

They sent out a notice to one neighborhood that their side street would be plowed – and they should park in a nearby lot designated for them.

When people moved their cars to that lot, they found it wasn’t plowed. When they got back home, their parking spaces were taken!

Any wonder why he lost the election? His wife – Heather Morgan Bilandic – was a socialite (or wannabe) and had a series of commercials trying out the tag line “Chic-ago”.

Didn’t play very well for people freezing waiting for busses and digging out parking spaces constantly.

          • BillW

I remember it hitting -26 (for a low temperature) twice in January 1982. I think that’s the record low. Don’t know the record for the lowest high temperature.

          • BillW

            Ask Tom:
Days when Chicago’s high temperature fails to reach zero are quite rare, with just 46 on the books dating to late 1870. The most recent occurrence was Jan. 6, 2014, when the mercury struggled to reach minus 2.

(Note – that will be Sunday as well – maybe lower)

Most of the city’s subzero highs cluster in the minus 1 to minus 5 range, but there have been three bitterly cold days with double-digit below-zero highs.
The city’s lowest high temperature was 11 below zero logged on Christmas Eve 1983 and equaled Jan. 18, 1994. The runner-up in the frigid high competition was Jan. 25, 1897, with a high of 10 below. Chicago’s all-time temperature extremes span 132 degrees, from a high of 105 on July 24, 1934, to a low of minus 27 on Jan. 20, 1985.

          • CanadaBear

Not to mention the wind is predicted to be around 20 mph. YIKES!

          • A Most Excellent Dude (GP)

I remember Xmas eve of 83. Fookin cold.

          • Irish Sweetness

Blast from the past. ’83 was the biggest snow storm in Ireland’s history. 9 foot drifts
. Schools closed for weeks. It was awesome being a kid back then.

          • SC Dave

-27 in 1985 is the record.

          • BillW

“Despite playing in a game-time temperature of 17 Β°F, a wind chill of βˆ’26 Β°F, and wind gusts up to 30 MPH, the 49ers scored a touchdown in every quarter and gained 406 total yards of offense while limiting Chicago quarterback Jim McMahon to just 121 passing yards with no touchdowns and 1 interception. Chicago only made inside the San Francisco 40-yard line twice during the whole game”

A week after the fog bowl. My recollection was it being colder than that. Odd how 17 degrees doesn’t sound that bad. I guess it was the wind. And the fact they weren’t competing.

    • BerwynBomber

He’ll play. Much as we hate on the guy he seems to gut out a lot of injuries — hammys, torn muscles and the like. Only thing I remember that has caused him to sit was the Shea hit or concussions.

How mobile he will be is a different story. Wouldn’t be shocked if we rang up three or four sacks against him.

    • Irish Sweetness

      I can’t believe that. $60? They aren’t fans.

It’s all relative. I did like some of the stats for McMahon. Don’t let Irish read it!

      • Irish Sweetness

Actually, Jim’s stats mostly sucked I thought… other than where it counts. Win column.

    • BearDown100393

Krenzel’s awareness has been sorely overlooked.

      • BerwynBomber

I swear Krenzel never saw a pass rush in all his playing years until he reached the NFL.

        • BearDown100393

          He was unique.

    • BerwynBomber

Nah, Luckman. By a mile. Cutty and McMahon fighting for the silver. Flip a coin.

        1. Where’s Jay’s Lombardi?

        2. Jimmy Mac went 25-0 as a starter between ’84 and ’87.

        3. I never saw Jay come back from 3 TD deficits like Jim did at least twice (KC and TB). Minny was two? In fact I never saw Jay come back from anything that I recall.

And I like Jay, but Jim was different class in audibles and never being beaten.

What’s Jay? Around 50% wins? Jim was up closer to 65%?

        • SC Dave

Mac had a bit better of a line. But not really disagreeing.

    • Sactowns#1

SID LUCKMAN!! What is that author smoking?!

  • CanadaBear

It’s that time of year. MMQB has been featuring the Fudge (big surprise) for the last little while. Among the articles for the Fudge is a sponsored article on potty training. That seemed appropriate!

    • BerwynBomber

That stuff drove me nuts in the preseason where a few “power ranking” lists had the Cheese at #1 or thereabouts. I called bullshit then and there. The post-Woodson Cheese peaked two years ago but McCarthy and a bad ST play did them in. They’ve been in decline since.

Rodgers, who has regained his form the last three or four weeks, always gives them a puncher’s chance, but no D and no rushing attack? Please. They ain’t going anywhere.

Btw, another bullshit ranking list I saw in the preseason was one that had Brady as the 10th ranked QB. Kid you not. I called BS on that one too. So stupid.
