Least Click-Inducing Headline Possible: Best to Approach Bears Opener with Nuance

| September 12th, 2016

screen-shot-2016-09-12-at-1-38-11-pm

Football has the most schizophrenic fans in sport. The reasons why are (a) there are too few games and (b) there is too much time between them. Baseball fans get to hit the reset button every day. Basketball and hockey fans every couple of days. Soccer fans, especially European ones, never get overemotional about a result because they play a zillion matches. Football fans are only guaranteed 16 games over 17 weeks. Once the season starts, it’s almost over.

Never is that schizophrenia more on display than in the aftermath of Week One. For eight months, we wait. Postseason. Super Bowl. Free agency. Draft. Camps. Preseason. All that time, every moment, leading up to a single contest against a single opponent on a single afternoon (or night). It’s only 1/16 (6.25%) of the regular season campaign, but it just feels like so much more.

Carson Wentz is going to the Hall of Fame.

Alex Smith is the MVP.

Jimmy Garoppolo is going to fetch the Patriots eleven first-round picks.

It isn’t exciting to treat Week One with nuance, especially in Chicago. Nuance don’t get clicks in hashtag hot take culture. But the 2016 Bears require it. Yes, they lost their opener. On the road. To a non-conference opponent, a team that also happened to be one of the league’s five best defenses and a playoff team a year ago.

But anybody who expected the portrait of this young team to be fully painted on opening Sunday was nothing short of delusional. The Bears have some guarantees – Cutler, Alshon, the middle linebackers, the guards – but by conservative estimates the club started about a dozen new players on offense and defense. A dozen.

Sunday asked the questions the Bears will need to answer over the next fifteen games. They weren’t bad against the Texans. They just weren’t good enough. But unlike some of the league’s bottom feeders, the Bears believe many of the answers to those questions are actually on the roster. Kevin White and Cody Whitehair (as a center) and Leonard Floyd and HJQ won’t be judged on how they performed in Houston. They’ll be judged by how much better they are in Minnesota on New Year’s Day.

And so will the 2016 Bears. Nobody expects this team to compete for a title. And if you do, you’re just not paying attention to the rest of the league. But a fair expectation, a real expectation should be a team that improves weekly, wins games and by the end of the season makes everyone believe they are on the precipice of great things.

Yesterday the Bears led a good team, on the road, in the fourth quarter. It’s not a moral victory. It’s a sign. And the sign reads…Close.

Agreed. Not only a top 5 defense, but arguable on of the best defensive lines in the last several years. I was proud of our first half. Bears needed to play mistake free to have a shot. They had quite a few mistakes and lost by 9. Tough day. Something to build on.

    • Irish Sweetness

Absolutely. Without a bum snap we were in a different ballgame, with Brockweiler playing catchup.
We’re not starting the right people in some places but that will change.

Seattle have lost Russell. Cleveland RGIII. Dallas Tony. Minny Teddy. We still have Cutty, we just have to keep him protected. The defense will be fine when that happens.

We might get Deshone Kaizer this year!

      • GPLDAN

Wilson says he will play against the Rams.

      • But u can play the “what if” game all day.
What if Hopkins caught that 2nd TD pass? Or if Fuller doesn’t drop that easy ball? Or if the Texans jump on the fumble instead of the Bears?

        See. It goes both ways.

  • BerwynBomber

Carson Wentz is going to the Hall of Fame.
    Alex Smith is the MVP.
Jimmy Garoppolo is going to fetch the Patriots eleven first-round picks.

Who actually has those thoughts, though? It seems more a strawman. The closest thing I’ve seen like that in regard to the HOU loss is about Kevin White and our OTs.

Btw, hats off to Belichick and the Pats. That was mighty impressive. No Brady, No Gronk and still beat AZ on the road. No easy thing.

    • SC Dave

Maybe the Cards aint that good.

      • BerwynBomber

I’m sure that’s what the Belichick haters wish to tell themselves today.

    • makeshift Oline and no Ninkovich either

  • BillW

I think it’s pretty apparent that Pace and the regime in total is not in for a quick fix here. While it’s much harder to do in football, I think they are attempting to build something sustainable so they compete regularly. You can’t do that in 2 years and maybe not even 3.

You have to get solid lines with decent backups and fairly young in most positions. Seems like they are attempting that.

You can’t be afraid to replace players you know won’t be part of the sustain-ness with younger players. And you can’t be afraid to replace THEM if it’s clear they can’t do it.

Thankfully, I have not heard or read anyone compare Forte’s day with Langfords. Maybe Haugh or Rosey did – I swore I won’t read them since my time is used up too much as is it.

I liked Jeff’s take on the game and his take in this post. Let’s let this all play out for several weeks and then we might be able to get some sense of good and bad.

I’m even willing to give Birdcage a few more weeks.

    • Jokey

      Yeah Haugh did, predictably.

    • willbest

In theory this is wrong because you can turn over 75% of your roster in 2 years. But in practice Detroit still has this culture where you can expect them to just shit all over the big lead they ran up, and yet somehow this has transcended a couple coaching staff changes. And I find it impossible to believe that its somehow a directive from the Ford family.

  • SC Dave

Excellent, Jeff. I’ll repeat what I’ve been on since the final whistle.

The sky is still up there.

    • CanadaBear

At some point you would think this BS would stop. Bears fans don’t give a shit about Cutler and I can’t imagine the rest of the NFL fans ever give Cutler a thought.

That still on the video is fucking hilarious.

Peyton Manning as his QB, and still managed to fuck it up. Now his QB
is basically Peyton’s slob roommate. “Jay! Jay, you used the last of the
      toilet paper!”……

You’ll never be rid of him, Chicago. He has 30 years and $567
buttzillion left on his current contract. Even getting benched for Jimmy
Clausen—now the proud owner of half a skull—wasn’t
enough send Jay Cutler packing forever. This man plays quarterback with
the same amount of urgency that Adam Sandler puts into his film roles.
One day, Cutler will just amble out onto the field in cargo shorts and
demand to hand the ball off to Rob Schneider. It’s coming. I can feel
it. He’ll never leave Chicago. He’ll build a patio at midfield and just
hang out for the next two decades, grilling burgers while the Bears lose
every game by 36 points. I kinda love him. If I were that rich, I’d be
      that lazy.

    Thank you sir!

  • They weren’t bad against the Texans. They just weren’t good enough – Jeff

I beg to differ. 1st half was dodgy. 2nd half was disastrous.

Name the team that lost by more points (and got more dominated in the 2nd half) than the Bears?

    Oh, there isn’t one.

    Except the Browns.
Oh, ant the Titans who lost by as many points as us.

Arguably the two worst franchises in the NFL.

    Good company.

    • Huge Bears Penis

SD got more dominated in the 2nd half than the Bears

      • But at least they scored like 24 points in the first half.

        • AlbertInTucson

And they lost Keenan Allen, yet again.

    • Irish Sweetness

Can we correct that? If the first half was dodgy that’s all on Whitehair. Should have been 10-0 or 14-0 up.

Let us be all clear on that. Cody Whitehair.

  • BerwynBomber

Good lord. McCown will be starting again? Aren’t there like twenty-five back-ups in the league better than McCown?

    • willbest

I thought the Bears were suppose to send Cutler packing and keep McCown

      • Some callers on the Score were saying to trade Cutty to the Browns McCown and a pick.

        • EnderWiggin

          Two first and a second?

        • GPLDAN

          Callers on the Score. Ha.

          • One of those wanting McCown suspiciously enough sounded Irish with a slight Thai accent.

Also said we should trade White for Bmarsh and Mo.

          • GPLDAN

And make Cameron Meredith into a running QB.

          • MB30SD

            damn, didn’t read down.

          • MB30SD

AND trade cutty for terry williams and meredtih straight up!

          • Irish Sweetness

Take that trade in a second.

      • BerwynBomber

Who said that? Anyone on DBB? McCown deserved the team MVP that ’13 year but he was a mirage. He has never been in Cutty’s league as a player.
Now in terms of getting a different bridge guy (not Pickles or McCown) after the “14 season or trading to get Mariota … yep I was for it.

        • willbest

I am almost certain it was discussed on DBB, with McCown having proponents, but as it was 2.5 years ago I couldn’t possibly name names. I just through it out there because we were discussing score caller mentality, and that is some low hanging Cutler fruit.

          • BerwynBomber

Fair enough. And yeah I certainly heard those idiots on the Score too. Hell, even last year there would still be a few talking McCown.

        • Irish Sweetness

I suggested doing it. Seemed like a good idea at the time. Fitzy was the pickup QB. You take your picks and build the team … meanwhile you have McCown and Fitzy. They’re both good QBs. What has Cutty done? He’s just about over 50% in Chicago.

    • Sauron’s right eyeball

I’m starting to think maybe McCown is a made guy. Every where he goes, starting quarterbacks end up in the hospital or they find themselves in bed with 3 legged midgets snorting lines of coke(i.e., Manziel.)

      • willbest

So he is in the high school gym teaching guys about life and saves the son of a mob boss?

    • SC Dave

      Apparently not

    • Irish Sweetness

      Nope. Probably aren’t 5.

  • BuddhaJoe

I don’t think it’s really that, I think it’s that a whole lot of these people are simply idiots who will be negative unless they win every year. As evidence, I present your Dumb-ass Meathead Post of the Day (courtesy of the Chicago Tribune comments:

“Thought 11: right now this is just a bad football team. I like the
Garappolo idea. I’d offer our 2017 first round pick, as right now I’m
not sure I’d trust Gase’s judgement on a pick in the draft.”

Also explains the writers like Haugh and Rosenbloom, they’re just giving the morons what they want.

    • MB30SD

jesus. people are so fucking dumb

    • BerwynBomber

Wake me when the Pats are willing to trade Belichick.

      • MB30SD

        cutty and 2 firsts?

        • BerwynBomber

          That’s all? 😉

Actually I like Fox and think he’s a solid HC. But it’s basically Belichick and then everyone else in terms NFL HC hierarchy. Would be a bit like when the Cubs got Espstein and Maddon. More important than any single player.

          • MB30SD

I was serious about my price… although I doubt they’d want cutty… or would be willing to part with the wizard for any price.

        • Irish Sweetness

We already pantsed up giving away Kyle and to firsts. I love Cutty, but he wasn’t worth it.

          • MB30SD

I’d give up almost anything to get bellicheat… for the pressers alone

      • BuddhaJoe

        • MB30SD

            What. too subtle?

          • SC Dave

    • BillW

      Gase?

  • BerwynBomber

“Nobody expects this team to compete for a title. And if you do, you’re just not paying attention to the rest of the league. But a fair expectation, a real expectation should be a team that improves weekly, wins games and by the end of the season makes everyone believe they are on the precipice of great things.”

I’m not sure the NFL is such a slow build league anymore. Doesn’t Fox have a history of getting teams to the SB in his second year? We have a veteran QB in his early 30s. Not some 24 year old kid we’re trying to develop. What was CAR’s record in ’14? 7-9, right? The Bears should seriously contend for the division or a WC spot this year.

Maybe you’re suggesting the same, but if instead it is some competitive 7-9 but the future looks bright rationale …. well, that’s how a guy like Jeff Fisher sticks around for ten years.

    • MB30SD

I tend to agree with you on your analysis… I also think that outcome is very possible.

      • BerwynBomber

And in fairness, maybe Blogfather was suggesting as much too. I’m just getting a little tired of the “get the parade route ready for the third year of POXANGIO” stuff.

        • MB30SD

I’m with you. I want a wild card spot and an anything can happen now year

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

There’s not a team in the league that doesn’t turn in a game on the road like yesterdays a couple times a year. It’s waaay early to be talking about low expectations.

          • BerwynBomber

Not the point. Or at least not mine. I was (immediately afterward) and today remain optimistic about yesterday’s performance. But what I won’t support is some “see, if we’re 7-9 and competitive this year, that’s cool because I’m not expecting much, etc.”

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

I was actually directing my comments towards Jeff’s ho hum outlook.

          • BerwynBomber

            Ah, gotcha. My bad.

          • MB30SD

totally agree. I’m just sick of losing

        • SC Dave

Just a couple of minor physics problems to solve. No biggie

    • BearDown100393

      Bill:
About two minutes, just long enough for me to finish my point. Now, a
staple of the superhero mythology is, there’s the superhero and there’s
the alter ego. Batman is actually Bruce Wayne, Spider-Man is actually
Peter Parker. When that character wakes up in the morning, he’s Peter
Parker. He has to put on a costume to become Spider-Man. And it is in
that characteristic Superman stands alone. Superman didn’t become
Superman. Superman was born Superman. When Superman wakes up in the
morning, he’s Superman. His alter ego is Clark Kent. His outfit with the
big red “S”, that’s the blanket he was wrapped in as a baby when the
Kents found him. Those are his clothes. What Kent wears – the glasses,
the business suit – that’s the costume. That’s the costume Superman
wears to blend in with us. Clark Kent is how Superman views us. And what
are the characteristics of Clark Kent. He’s weak… he’s unsure of
himself… he’s a coward. Clark Kent is Superman’s critique on the whole
human race. Sorta like Beatrix Kiddo and Mrs. Tommy Plimpton.

      • Sauron’s right eyeball

Ok then wise guy, whose alter ego is Superman derived from? Eye know but I’m not telling.

        • BearDown100393

This is Bill’s theory. You’d have to ask him but he asphyxiated himself a few years ago.

      • Irish Sweetness

That’s from ‘Kill Bill’. David Carradine’s story.

And incorrect was Bill. When Superman wakes up in the morning he is Kal-El, son of Jor-El, not Superman.

In all seriousness, despite my own rant yesterday I think things will be looking up soon. It just needs to come together. The biggest problems I saw came from rookie players and a rookie OC and I think they can improve on that. The other problem was communication and continuity, and that will come with more time together.

    • The biggest problem I see (and have seen since letting Gase go) is the subpar OC.

You can chip to help the RT, can scheme around weaknesses, but can’t fix a stupid (Tice) or stubborn (Martz) or simply incompetent (Tucker) co-ordinator.

But hey, maybe Loggains was saving the good stuff for when it counts.

He was crap yesterday, I agree. But he’s not old and hopefully not stuck in his ways like Martz so I’ll give him more than one game. I think he should get more blame than Langford, Massie, and Leno.

        • madscout12

We could win with Martz. What we needed was a damn GM with balls.

“Oh, you want to trade the top TE target because your O doesn’t use TE? Go pound sand.”

          • BerwynBomber

Exactly. Everyone blames Martz for Olsen but that was on Angelo. A GM ultimately makes those types of personnel decisions. Or should.

And Martz could coach. Yes, he was weird, and inflexible, but he was an above average OC.

          • Irish Sweetness

When was Greg Olsen ever the top TE target for the Bears? He disappeared 2 games out of 3 and had a YAC of 0.7.

      • SC Dave

The point was he is a rookie too

      • Irish Sweetness

His OL didn’t help anyone out in pass pro.

  • Doc Nitty

Reposting because I want the world to see how superior my genes are.

The Bears loss notwithstanding, it was a proud football weekend for this dad. My 8 and 10 year olds had their first tackle football games this weekend. My 8 year old, who I’ve long known was going to be a force on the gridiron had a great first ever game. 3 Sacks and at least 3 other tackles including a HUGE touchdown saving tackle on an intereception return where he ran from his left tackle positon all the way across the field. The greatest part is, knowing he plays D-end I told him on the way to the game: “I want to see three sacks from you today”. I was joking around trying to pump him up. Little did I know….

Rooting for PIT — if only because I want someone/anyone to knock out NE at the end of the year — but the Josh Norman play sure looked like a fumble to me.

Heckuva play, though, by R-berger and Brown on fourth and 1. That took some balls.

  • BearDown100393

    Cousins is stupid.

    • BerwynBomber

Cousins makes me appreciate Cutty. R-berger does not.

That said, WAS is back in this thing. Interesting W1.

    • Irish Sweetness

Dude’s got a 74% completion at home. That’s top of the NFL. Not defending him.

  • BearDown100393

Norman holds Brown’s jersey and trash talks after. Stupid.

  • It’s getting hot in here, GP.

  • BerwynBomber

If PIT’s O stays healthy — no sure thing given their recent history — they may lead the league in a few team stats.

    • madscout12

That, and if they lay off the drugs. And the rape.

  • OH, D-Willy, you BEAUTIFUL BASTARD!

All I needed was 60 points to beat GP tonight, and I got 65!

    muah.

    • GPLDAN

      there you go

      • haha, that was a horrible loss, dude.

You were siting pretty at 179 till the Butch curse struck.

It was close though. If D-willy didn’t get that last min final TD, maybe I don’t beat you.

Still, getting 65 points on mon night is epic!

That shall go down in the FF archives, right up there with Waffle beating u with like 4 players, and me beating NB in the championship with a similar night like tonight.

  • willbest

If Porter sucks… I guess Norman must be rancid. Antonio Brown went 8 for 126 and 2 TDs. Norman is also apparently lining up to be locker room cancer in short order. Looking like Bears dodged a bullet (assuming we ever seriously pursued him)

    • Johnnywad

Antonio Brown spent a good part of the night on the opposite side of the field. But I’m still with you. Fuck Josh Norman.

    • BerwynBomber

PIT mostly picked on Breeland. Not Norman.

    • MB30SD
    • Brought up last night how AJ Green went for 10/10, 180yds, and 1 TD on Revis Island.

That’s what I mean. All CBs have bad games. I have yet to see a CB who can stop the top WRs.

It’s not like the old days. CBs can’t jam the shit out of them, or even touch them really.

That’s what makes the pass rush that much more urgent.

      • BerwynBomber

Agreed. But in fairness Revis did pretty much shut out guys for a few years there. He might merely be coming down to earth now.

  • madscout12

Is Goff that bad? If so, that GM should be fired. Either that or the coaching staff. Or both.

    • GPLDAN

      its bad

    • BerwynBomber

I thought he was injured. Or maybe that was Wentz. But Goff showed nothing in the PS.

    • Rams like 85 total yds on O.

That’s almost as bad as ours in the 2nd half.

  • Did Steve young just say the QB doesn’t have to slide?

Doesn’t he have like 15 concussions?

    • MB30SD

      bingo.

Cousins looked like he wanted brain damage tonight. Or was it gabbert

  • Bowman is a BEAST.

Also, why is Fisher still employed?

He runs his O like he’s in the SEC.

    Dude. go vertical.

    • MB30SD

so is brooks. I also love reid

    • BerwynBomber

I like Jimmy Ward too — even if he pick-sixed Cutty last year. NIU kid. Almost always root for MAC kids.

    Dude lost 3 fingers btw.

How fucking crazy is that video?!

    • BerwynBomber

      Wow …

      • MB30SD

yeah, more like…. OMFG!!! HOLY SHITTTT!!!! AHHHHHHHHH!

  • BerwynBomber

This will be Fisher’s last year. Coaching in big markets brings a whole different level of media heat. LA will be nothing like STL, let alone TEN.

    • willbest

I thought the whole reason the NFL couldn’t keep an NFL team in LA is because nobody in southern cal gives a flop about football.

      • BerwynBomber

Nah, LA wouldn’t give Georgia a taxpayer-funded stadium so she took her toy back to her hometown of STL.

LA is pretty passionate about their pro sports teams. Check the Dodgers and Lakers attendance marks sometimes. Hell, I even think the Kings do well out there.

  • beninnorcal

Hopefully, the Bears are never on Hard Knocks. The Rams look like a fuggin joke right now.

why he is a puppeteer, probably got some birthday party gigs out of that.

          • MB30SD

            ugh

  • BerwynBomber

Checking a Cheese thread, there is a chance Sam Shields career might be over. Third concussion in less than two years. If that were the case, one could argue the Cheese will have lost two of their top three defensive players in the last year in Shields and Raji (the third being Matthews of course).
    #TheDivisionIsWinnable

    • willbest

Doesn’t Cutler get one every year?

      • BerwynBomber

I don’t think he has had one for three years. ’13, right? Or was that a different injury?

Regardless, three in two years is Wes Welker territory.

        • TBC

Cutler’s concussions were in 2010 (Giants) and 2012 (Texans). He tore his nutsack in 2013.

      • Scharfinator

        He can’t remember.

    • TBC

Mike Daniels is better than shields and much better than Raji. Raji wasn’t even top 5 (Unless you’re talking about sex appeal).
