honestly, at this point, i am questioning the strength and conditioning program. this many injuries is not standard.

    • SC Dave

      Yup.

    • PaceBot 2000

Goldman got bent over a goal line pile and fucked his ankle = not strength/conditioning related
Trevathan’s thumb broke in half = not strength/conditioning related
Fuller partially tore a knee ligament = not strength/conditioning related
White sprained an ankle so badly his leg broke = not strength/conditioning related
Cutler sprained his thumb = not strength/conditioning related
Houston tore his ACL = not strength/conditioning related
Wilson has a broken foot = not strength/conditioning related
but…..I see what you mean. Thank you for sharing.

      • SC Dave

        Yes doctor.

        • Evan Beckett

what about any of these is not related to strength? ligament and structural strength is related to strength training.

          • PaceBot 2000

Ok, you just went full retard on me E-Dog. You have solved the age old mystery of how not to get injured. I will let some other guy feast on this gem.

          • Irish Sweetness

I have to agree. Sweetness had his own program for strengthening on the lateral stuff in his joints. Paying special attention to everything used in Proprioception etc. The trainer may not understand all that stuff. Then again, Sweetness didn’t listen to his trainer – he did his own thing.

      • Sauron’s right eyeball

Why do we let our kids play this sport? Yonny, you have just saved millions of chillins lives all over the country. God bless you sir and thank you for your public service. lol

    • BillW

I have no idea, I am literally ignorant on this and I wonder if anyone on the blog has a somewhat informed opinion.

It seems we have an unusual number of injuries, but maybe because this is the only team we follow close enough to count them up. With 32 teams in the league, it’s possible that our number is the median (half teams have more, half teams have less),

Still, as PaceBot demonstrated in trying to show it’s not related to conditioning – it’s a hell of a lot of injuries.

I remember seeing Julius Peppers leg get twisted in a gruesome fashion and thought “that’s career ending”. He came back in the game.

I have to think conditioning/strength plays a part in that. It can’t just be good or bad luck.

      • PaceBot 2000

it’s a hell of a lot…..and yet not related to strength and conditioning. Tell AP to train harder, tell Anquan Boldin he should have lifted more weights so his face didn’t get smashed in. Inform Brian Urlacher that he didn’t rip up his knee because of Major Wright landing on him like a fuckhead but because he wasn’t fucking strong enough or in good enough condition.
Guys that get concussions are “soft”. Tearing your Achilles is because you didn’t have the proper stretching protocol. Breaking your thumb is because you didn’t use your grandpa’s hand exerciser enough.
        Nope.

        • BerwynBomber

Actually, I do wonder about the Achilles and non-contact foot injuries in regard to strength and conditioning. Some of the minimalist running views suggest that today’s athletic footwear — especially true in sports like basketball and tennis — are actually worse for the feet because the extra support and padding end up weakening our feet. How much of that would carry over to football (and cleats) — even if you prescribe to the theory — who knows.
Then again I would have no idea how much foot strengthening or stretching protocol (as you say) a professional athlete does. One would assume a lot.

        • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd BirdCagE = mc2(ButchDeadlift)

          Cutler should’ve wacked off more.

Time-proven method to strengthen core thumb

        • Irish Sweetness

‘lifting weights’ is only one aspect of training. These boys should all be doing yoga for starters,

    • SC Dave

There are definitely techniques and exercises that involve the strengthening of connective tissue and of bones; a one minute search resulted in the list cited at the end of this reply.

Given they are a professional training staff, one would assume that the Bears S&C coaches are aware of this stuff. While some of the injuries the Bears have suffered can be attributed to bad luck, it is reasonable to question the skills of the staff at Halas Hall in this regard given the overabundance of injuries since the regime change.

Another aspect, of course, is diet. Not sure, but it is reasonable to assume the nutritionists were also replaced when Pace moved in.

we are talking about professional athletes here that have been training their entire lives. Suffering blows and making movements that would simply shatter our normal pussy bodies. • SC Dave

That does not mean that their training methods are beyond reproach, or that some don’t train better than others, Johnny.

Were that the case, there would be no strength and conditioning coaches.

          • PaceBot 2000

I’m sorry, you can’t train your way out of a broken bone, a concussion, a high ankle sprain, a catastrophic hit to the knee or even non contact.
There are some guys that exist that have bones so thick, tendons so strong, genes so perfect that they are the only ones that can consistently play pro football…..and uh, they actually end up playing pro football……just like their dad’s, uncles, grandpa’s, brothers, etc.

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

Nah, I’d rather be lucky than good.

          • SC Dave

That little dodge don’t fly, Johnny. You *can* train to make yourself less vulnerable to such injuries, concussions excepted of course.

          • PaceBot 2000

I would simply love for you to look Navorro Bowman in the face and tell him that he would have reduced his chances of ripping his Achilles in half last week if he had just trained correctly.

And stop calling ACL tears, Achilles and other tendons soft tissue injuries that can be overcome by diet and training protocols. That’s not what they’re talking about ya bunch of white devils.

          • Evan Beckett

haha get over yourself dude. you suggest that “nothing is known” about the Bears’ training procedures, yet you are adamant that injuries just happen because they happen and that it has nothing to do with strength training regimens. the Bears are a clear outlier in terms of the magnitude and volume of the injuries that they’ve sustained. there must be an explanation. i was thinking this exact thought sitting in Soldier Field for MNF against the Eagles. how do we have 6-7 guys going down in one game. injuries that occur this early in the season and this often suggest an issue with preparation and training. concussions are concussions and have little to do with strength and conditioning, but soft tissue injuries have been proven to occur at a lower rate with proper conditioning and strengthening. and mind you, when i say conditioning, i am not talking about cardio. i am talking about muscular conditioning.

          • SC Dave

Johnny is reduced to name calling, and twisting statements into something that supports his prejudice.

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd BirdCagE = mc2(ButchDeadlift)

But are the Bears truly and “outlier” when it comes to injuries?

The colts are playing 3 rooks I’m pretty sure cuz 3 of their Olinemen went down.

That’s not even counting the other injuries, and other teams might be more injured.

I’m curious to see if the Bears really are an outlier.

          • Evan Beckett

we would have to chart the entire league in order to actually determine statistically if they are an outlier; however, it seems to me that there is a recurring theme at play, especially when it comes to players who have been injured previously, played/practiced again, and are now injured again (see: Kevin White, Lamarr Houston, Alshon Jeffrey, Pernell McPhee, Kyle Fuller, etc.). i could be wrong. i just wanted to create the discussion (which seemed to work).

          • Evan Beckett

I should clarify that I am aware the Alshon is not hurt right now. But, in terms of recurring injuries, he is a great example.

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd BirdCagE = mc2(ButchDeadlift)

The podcast I listen to has a doctor who evaluates nearly every major injury to star players.

He says that ‘soft tissue’ injuries can be reduced through proper training and nutrition.

Arian Foster is perhaps the poster child of this (and Alshon is picking up his torch).

But he says that bone injuries for the most part are flukes.

For instance, I think Ryan Matthews broke one clavicle one year, then the other the next year.

I don’t think there’s any program where he could’ve reduced the chance of breaking his clavicle in the future. Maybe a person can strengthen bone, a bit, but it’s negligible.

It’s not like infusing a skeleton with adamantium.

          • Evan Beckett

I agree with this 100%. I do question, however, the rehab programs. On the face of it, it seems we have a terrible track record with bringing back players who have been injured.

          • Evan Beckett

            curious: what podcast?

I was wondering if we can indeed strengthen bone (without milk).

Also, if bone is stronger, does that mean more calcium/weight, and therefore, less speed?
        Hmmm.

Are the Bears STILL cheap when they’re not FORCED to spend $$$? (Cheap on medical staff?)

        Gotta wonder.

Fuck, all he needed was some of that awesome looking kes tape and none of this would ever have happened!!!!!

          • Evan Beckett

            hahahahahaha

    • Captain Obvious

A broken bone has nothing to do with strength and conditioning. NOTHING.

Think when Urlacher broke his wrist it was because he wasn’t strong enough?

      • Evan Beckett

in general, you’re wrong. bone density increases with load bearing exercises.

in the context of NFL football, these players’ bones are strong, undoubtedly. urlacher’s injury was a fluke.

i am not suggesting that all broken bones are related to strength and conditioning. now, for players who have recently been injured and keep getting injured, strength and conditioning does play a role, bone or soft tissue. was kevin white’s rehabilitation program inadequate to the point that he had some weaknesses after low usage and muscle/bone atrophy? are alshon’s recurring hamstring issues a result of an inadequate approach toward his rehab? maybe. we’ll never know. but it’s worth asking the question.

        • SC Dave

          An entirely reasonable suggestion.

    • Huge Bears Penis

I am questioning everything, strength and conditioning, equipment, field conditions, the asian ‘masseuse’ they bring in to give rub downs, ball boys, dietitians, Chicago Water department(too much lead and crap in tap water).

            Star vs confidence. Huge diff.

          • willbest

That might have been passable nonsense before he went on IR this year. But this was his sophmore season and the mulligan he got for last year comes right back on his record now that it is no longer a freak accident and he is just brittle. Remember he also had a hamstring injury in the preseason that clearly limited him.

Two can play the extrapolation game. He was on track for 144 targets catching 53% of his passes, for 9.8 yards per catch

          • SC Dave

Wrong at least on the career over part. Star on the other hand… we’ll have to wait and see.

So Hoyer must be on his way to passing for 4,000+ yards
with 14 TDs and no INTs ?

What White IS is on his way to is a 19 catch rookie season and averaging less than 10 yards per catch.

            9.8 a catch.

Fine for a back or Tight end.

    • http://www.dabearsbeat.com/ Johnathan Wood

Braverman would be a Royal replacement. They need another big body at WR. That’s Meredith (and Wilson in a couple weeks).

    • BearDown100393

What does “limited” really mean. Cutler was “limited” last week and he just stood on the sideline.

Cutler was out today I believe.

  • chitownproud85

So…guess Alshon will be getting his contract either way, right?

    • willbest

Somebody was paying Alshon, this just makes it far and away more likely its going to be the Bears. Though that is entirely up to Alshon because they would have to tag him again for $18 million if they wanted to lock him up and there is no way they are going to do that.

      • chitownproud85

I cant imagine that they would let him walk now, no matter what. Can you imagine the Bears explaining letting Alshon walk when Kevin White is a totally unproven commodity and literally NO ONE on the roster to replace a number 1 receiver spot(probably not even a WR2). This pretty much guarantees that Alshon is brought back, and hes just as injury prone. lol. This team man. This organization. Just LOL

      We almost gotta sign Alshon.

One, in spite of his injuries, he has performed well, esp for a 2nd rounder.
Two, be nice to actually keep homegrown talent
Three, might send a message to rest of team, cultivate good culture
Four, White’s bone are made of cardboard
      Five, he’s not a bozo
      Six, we’ll have some cap.
And seven, seven, there’s no tomorrow..

          Courtesy then GM, Jim Finks.

          • SC Dave

It’s a little murky (at least on Wikipedia) who was responsible for the 1983 draft.

It says in the Finks article that he resigned in 1982 because Halas hired Ditka without consulting his GM (a true bonehead move by Halas). That matches my recollection.

Under the Vainisi article, it says he became GM in August 1983.

Regardless, I imagine most of the scouting expertise was still left from Finks.

      • Scharfinator

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd BirdCagE = mc2(ButchDeadlift)

            One could argue, Olsen too.

          • BuddhaJoe

He didn’t reach his full potential, no, but he was good and was Cutler’s best target when he was here. Until they traded him because idiot Martz didn’t want to move into the 21st century. Fucking Manumaleuna. And people wonder why Cutler never lived up to his hype.

          • BerwynBomber

Cutler never lived up to his hype because he is an average starting QB who was overhyped. Not because Greg Olsen was traded.

          • BuddhaJoe

I would say above average but point taken.

          • willbest

If you didn’t trade for Cutler you are actually suffering at QB until 2011 when Andy Dalton would have been available (I am assuming we were never going to draft #1 with that D). Or 2012 for Wilson or Foles (though maybe we are drafting high enough for Tannehill at that point).

          • BerwynBomber

I wasn’t beefing about the trade. Or MMQBing it. I was only implying that the excuse gig is up. Every QB in the league has them. Pretty much every year. Closest thing to a perfect supporting cast I’ve seen recently was Manning’s situation last year: arguably historic type D and real good playmakers on O with a solid OL. Actually Newton’s wasn’t bad either, except that his wideouts were pretty much dog shit.

But for the most part every QB in the league has one positional group or even whole unit that is average or below average. Hence, the Cutty excuses (especially after 8 years) ring hollow taken in larger context. Not that they are completely invalid. Just that they often apply to every QB in the league.

          • willbest

Just saying, I don’t think it can ever be considered wasted first rounders making that trade. Hence the value of even an average QB, though Cutler is more bipolar than average. 2008, 2011, 2013, and 2015 his QBR was 20 points higher than 2009, 2010, 2012, and 2014.

          • BerwynBomber

“Bi-polar” equals average — that’s the nature of “averages”. Cutty has always been high ceiling/low floor. Thus, the season-to-season swings.

          • willbest

Bimodal. One of the ways they “trick” people into going to law school is with the “average” starting salary of something like $80k. The dirty secret is about 10% of lawyers make 160k but that drives the average. The median attorney makes somewhere around 50k. Not horrible, but not exactly something you plop a $100k down, when your undergrad degree probably has you making somewhere around $40k (up to 60k if it was in something useful).

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

Neckbeard was our bridge. The Bengals make the playoffs every year with Dalton. I’d have been just fine with that.

          • willbest

You would have had to known to take him though. And keep in mind the wheels were off our D by 2013 and Lach was just out there in 2012.

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

Just saying is all. Cutler wasn’t the answer either. It’s still a zero sum game.

          • willbest

            No the answer was
2009 – draft Roidrage Barbie in the 1st, trade up for Jarius Byrd in the 2nd, grab Vasquez (G) in the 3rd, and pick up Julian edelman before the Pats

2010 – Grab Earl Thomas or JPP (teach him fireworks are bad), Gronk in the 2nd, and Navaro Bowman in the 3rd, Geno Atkins in the 4th, and Antonio Brown in the 6th

2011 – trade up to get Tyron Smith, also pick up Richard Sherman

2012 – trade up for Fletcher Cox, pick up Wilson and Norman and win the SuperBowl 3 years in a row.

But I can’t go back in time to tell Angelo what to do.

Yeah, Harris was beastly for a few years. Pro Bowl-level performance. Career could have been longer but D interior linemen probably have shelf lives that equate to RBs.

          • SC Dave

Olsen was the best receiver on the team when he was with the Bears.

          • Scharfinator

Agree on TH. Olsen was a great pick, we just decided to inexplicably trade him away.

Hester would have been worth a first if Angelo could somehow see the future. That dumb mother fucker couldn’t even see the past.

        • SC Dave

Olsen was worth a first round pick. Unless he gets hurt, he’ll be a 12 year starter.

          • SC Dave

Hopefully Cutler’s good to go next week. I feel like Hoyer will be OK against the Colts since their D sucks hard, but his dink-and-dunk shit will get figured out quick by a competent D and then they’ll be fucked.

    • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd BirdCagE = mc2(ButchDeadlift)

It might get figured out this week, tbh.

Without White (a 4.3 threat), defenses will be more brazen in stopping the run and blitzing.

For some odd reason, the Loins didn’t blitz.

Only way to combat this is by hitting someone over the top, or screens. Neither of which we have particularly done with any success.

However, like you said, that Colt’s D is fucking horrid.

      • BuddhaJoe

I don’t think the Colts D will be able to counter as long as Loggains has a good game plan like he did last week. But without the deep threat it’s only a matter of time. Which makes me wonder where that game plan was the first few games.

I’ve never been a fan of Super-Hero movies.
The exceptions for me are usually the ‘alternative’ hero flick. My favorites being: “Unbreakable” w/ Willis/Jackson and “The Cobbler” w/ Sandler/Hoffman/Method Man.
Although! I was pleasantly surprised with Batman vs. Superman. I never knew going in that Wonder Woman had a roll in the flick. Not only did she have a part, but she was by far, the biggest badass in the movie – I really liked her character.

One thing is for sure, we just got better in the receiving game. Now Meredith gets Kevin’s snaps, and we can start catching targets now.

2015 Draft- Take a WR with a history of lower leg injuries, a position based on speed and quick twitch, in the top 10.

2016 Draft- Take a 24 year old pass rush specialist who has never been able to rush the pass in the top 15.

Ryan Pace= Phil Emery but less weird. Fire him too.
